You should be especially aware at intersections, where other vehicles can cross your path of travel. There are many things to scan for, including traffic devices, road surfaces, and the traffic and pedestrians around you. In a slow, tight turn, such as turning around in a parking lot, it helps to counterweight by leaning in the opposite direction of the motorcycle and direction of the turn. JP’s RAMBLIN’ ON...

Summertime is Here As it usually happens, this all started in the beginning. Yes, as we were beginning our Mother’s Day ride to the N. GA mountains, when much to my surprise, we encountered a flat tire while roaring up Interstate 85 just south of the Pleasant Hill Road exit. Needless to say, that situation wasn’t too pleasant. We had to get towed home. Thanks to my HOG membership, and nearby EZ Motorcycle Towing Company, that situation turned out to be painless. The following days while at the service department of Hellbender Harley-Davidson, because of circumstances, I found out that Metzler would stand behind their new CruisTec tire. They sent me a new tire. Thank-you Metzler!

So, for a “replacement” to my wife’s Mother’s Day Ride, we took the same planned route for a Father’s Day ride. We rode north on GA 23, just past Tallulah Falls and took a left onto Old 441 South (still heading north) until we got to Lake Rabun Rd. Left on Lake Rabun Rd., and we were in heaven. BEAUTIFUL! Now we had planned on a picnic lunch somewhere on this road and we actually found the “perfect” picnic spot. For only a $5 entrance fee, Lake Rabun Recreation Area and Campground had a picnic table in the shade just waiting for us. Having a great picnic lunch overlooking the lake, we celebrated both a late Mother’s Day and my Father’s Day. After lunch, off we went riding on all of

the absolutely great motorcycle roads in the area, including (but not limited to) highways 197, 180, 129 and 60. We rode well over 250 miles of pure bliss that day. Last month on the local scene, I rode to the 2019 Ride for Kids, starting at the Cumming GA Fairgrounds. This is an annual ride put on by the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation. “Ride for Kids” is the longest-running, most successful motorcycle charity event in the nation. They explained how more U.S. children die from brain tumors than any other disease. I felt good doing my part. Preride entertainment included vendors, food, fun, and games. Truly a good time was had by all, young and old. Then it was off on a police-escorted scenic ride, with BORNTORIDE.COM | BTR 13

several brain tumor patients accompanying the motorcyclists on their ride. What an awesome sight. My travels also included a ride up to Cartersville, GA to visit Southern Devil Harley-Davidson, who hosted the Combat Veterans Motorcycle Association 3rd Annual RIDE 4 LIFE. This included live music by BTR 14 | BORNTORIDE.COM

Double Barrel, a car and bike show, bikini bike wash, and a mechanical bull. “Save a Hog … Ride a Bull,” is their slogan. Dothan Harley-Davidson – It’s more than a Harley Dealership! I was so honored to have been asked to write this story about Dutch and Bill Holland, owners of the popular Harley-Davidson dealership in Dothan, Alabama. If you’ve never heard of this dealership and the outstanding family that runs it, sit back, and enjoy the following story! Dutch Holland started this dealership back in 1972 when Dothan, Alabama, did not have a Harley dealership. Dutch was just getting out of the military and decided to try his luck at becoming a Harley dealer in Dothan. “I had always been a two-wheeled nut for many years. In 1968 when I was working for the National Guard in Slocomb, Alabama, two Local business owners’ pulled up on beautiful, new Harleys. While talking with them, they mentioned that they had to travel BTR 18 | BORNTORIDE.COM

out of state to purchase these new bikes. So, I wanted to try to see if Harley would be interested in letting me start a dealership.

me a letter asking if I was still interested in opening up a dealership. I didn’t have much money, but had good credit where I could start the floor plan for the new bikes. I knew of some other business guys that were interested in opening up a Harley franchise, but Harley chose me to start the business. I started Dothan Harley Davidson in the fall of 1972.” With acumen for running a good business and treating the customers right, Dutch was elected by his HD peers to be on the prestigious Harley Davidson Advisory Board. I was representing the southern district in 1994. You rotate off this board every three years, however his peers reelected Dutch every other term so Dutch served 4 terms for I sent them a letter asking and they wrote a total of 12 years. 1993, Buell was bought back that they were not interested in having by Harley-Davidson. As Dutch was sharing a dealership in Dothan. But in 1971, they sent with me his extensive history with Harley-

Davidson, he shared with me his involvement with Buell! “When I was on the Harley Advisory Board, they ask one person to be on the Buell Board – I was selected. As long as Buell was in business, I was on their Board the entire time.” Dutch started off his franchise with only 4 ,000 sq. ft. of a 8,000 sq ft building, his friend had a clothing business in the other half. In 1995, Dutch bought his friend part of the building and we remodeled the store. My son, Bill, came in to help out after he graduated from school in 1977.” It was very lean years in the 1970s. Dutch was away at school two or three times a year with the National Guard and his wife, Sara, had a government job. Thankfully, with Bill stepping in to run the company, they were able to stay in business during some very lean years. 1986-87 things started to

turn around, by 1989 Dutch was able to be at the dealership full time as he had retired from the National Guard. Bill was stepping into some large shoes

“The hardest time that we hit was in 1984. Interest rates were high, bikes were not selling, and every day was very difficult.” when his dad, Dutch, was away with the National Guard a school, summer camp or weekend drill. Being a young man just out

of high school, he had learned the basics of running the family-owned business. Bill had some interesting things to say about this formidable time in his life. “The hardest time that we hit was in 1984. Interest rates were high, bikes were not selling, and every day was very difficult. My wife, Cindy, had to quit her job to come help me out at the shop. It was me, my wife, and one technician keeping the doors open at the dealership. Dad went back to work with the National Guard, getting more time in for his retirement PLUS providing money that was needed to keep the franchise alive.” Dutch added, “Once I got my time in and was able to draw my Civil Service and Army pensions, I was able to come back and work full time at the dealership.” Dutch did share with me that sometimes when he was locking the doors at night at the store, he wasn’t sure if that

would be the last time. Those times were so very difficult for the Holland family. I asked Dutch was what his favorite Harley; he loves the Electra Glide motorcycle. He proudly displays a 100,000 mile patch on his vest. “We rode with a lot of other riders even before the HOG chapters started. We had some amazing rides with some wonderful people. We always went to state and regional rallies together as a group. Those were some great times that Sara and I enjoyed doing together.” Dutch and his family preserved and pushed forward, creating an amazing place for Harley lovers to come and enjoy their establishment. They had a complete re-do of the building and enlargement in 1996. Bill took on the Can Am and Sea Doo line, adding another 10,000 sq. ft. to the store. The Hollands completed a major remodel in 2017. With Bill’s vision, he designed a unique building that has a beautiful, visual experience to the one that steps into the front doors of the dealership. There are two franchises under the same roof line. Everyone loves the new layout and it’s really something that you need to check out when you visit Harley-Davidson of Dothan. The Holland family is very proud to have received 14 Bar and Shield awards over the BTR 20 | BORNTORIDE.COM

years. The Bar and Shield award is awarded to the top 25 dealers in the United States! This dealership has some of the best bike nights in the area! Bill said, “I don’t know exactly what the exact count was, but there was at least 500 people in attendance at our last bike night. I was coming back from an off-site event and couldn’t find a place to park! With all the cars, people, and motorcycles, it was crazy busy!” With free food and entertainment, the Holland family knows how to throw a proper bike night! Their popular bike nights are the 2nd Saturday of each month (FebruaryNovember). I asked them what kept them going and doing so well at running this business. Bill explained, we are very thankful for Gods

provisions and guidance “We love what we do, we love our customers, they are like family to us. We enjoy the relationships we have with our staff and customers. I can be off-site and meet someone and they tell me, ‘I had my bike serviced there and they were great, the girls in motor-clothes are the best.’ Our staff is amazing. Jeremy, our GM, runs this place and does an outstanding job.” Also, if you love hugs as much as I do, you can get an honest to goodness hug from the original Harley Hugger, Dutch Holland! Winding down our great conversation, I asked Dutch for one of his favorite stories to share with me. “I always have my cell phone. One day I was at a meeting at Harley headquarters and someone called me. I stepped outside and took the call. It was a biker with a flat tire on I-10. Someone had given that man my business card with his cell number on it and said, ‘If you ever need anything just call Dutch.’ I called my dealership in Dothan and sent someone out to help the biker. Then I went back into my meeting.” Thank you Dutch and Bill for an outstanding interview! All of us at Born To Ride appreciate you and your commitment to outstanding customer service with your business, Dothan Harley-Davidson!

Women’s World Highrise Harley

After spending most of my life on the back of someone else’s bike; I got my license and bought a bike at the ripe old age of 59. When my husband died, I missed him, and I missed riding with him. One of those things I could change! Learning to ride had to be easier than finding another good husband with a bike! At first, I just wanted to learn to ride. I didn’t know if I’d ever get a bike of my own. I just couldn’t see how it would fit into my lifestyle. After my husband passed, I’d moved to a high-rise condo in Atlanta. Not exactly where you want to ride a motorcycle! I fell in love with a red Harley-Davidson Softail Slim. I had it delivered to a friend’s house in a small nearby town. We would coordinate our schedules; I’d drive an hour to her place then we’d ride our bikes for an hour or two and I’d drive the hour back. As soon as she got her license, my friend was ‘riding it like she stole it’ as they say. It wasn’t so easy for me. It took a long time to get the hang of changing gears and using the clutch. I needed more time riding and practicing. It was time to bring Rosie home! She’s named Rosie after Rosie the Riveter. BTR 22 | BORNTORIDE.COM

A cousin who’s an experienced rider brought her home for me. Then I faced the first obstacle of having a high-rise Harley. How do you learn to ride in the city with all that traffic? What I needed was a big parking lot for practice. With no traffic. One Sunday morning I was looking out the window while having my morning coffee and I saw it. The parking lot of the shopping center in the next block is completely empty early on Saturday and Sunday mornings. I’m not a morning person but weekend mornings when offices are closed, stores haven’t opened yet and church services hasn’t begun, the city is quiet. Perfectly quiet. Peaceful. No traffic. Beautiful quiet morning rides. That’s where I got comfortable riding Rosie in the city! From there I ventured out to surrounding neighborhoods. Then I found backroads to various suburbs, heading toward the mountains. There is traffic getting out of the city, but I’ve gotten more used to it now and avoid times when it’s heavy as much as possible. Even experienced bikers are usually surprised when they learn that I keep my bike in the city.

The next hurdle was how to keep her charged? A trickle charge is easy, but I park in a parking deck where there are no electrical outlets. Another obstacle to having a high-rise Harley. While my girlfriends in the suburbs simply plug their trickle charger into a socket in the garage, I’ve learned to remove my battery, bring it into my condo and plug it in there. Then I learned there’s a portable charger. I can charge it inside then use it to charge the bike. Of course, it’s best to simply ride enough to keep the battery charged. I do that as much as possible. That means sometimes taking a short ride when it’s colder than my preferred riding weather. It sometimes means finding time in my schedule for a quick ride or at least cranking the bike before heading out of town or when I know I won’t ride for a few days. Although I write about women who ride, I still consider myself a beginning rider. I’ve only had my license a couple years. I take it easy and stay close to home. I love my quiet morning rides in the city. I’ve learned that you don’t have to lead a biker lifestyle— whatever that is—to enjoy riding. You can fit a motorcycle into the lifestyle you have. I love my high-rise Harley and I love riding country backroads. As for lifestyle, Rosie and I are city girls!

a taste of American transportation history at its best. The museum houses over 320 of America’s rarest and most significant motorcycles and automobiles, and is renowned for its “non-traditional” approach to preserving a vast collection of two- and four-wheeled machines that spans over 100 years. While most automotive and motorcycle related museums in North America house near static collections of shiny, restored machines kept in glass cases or behind velvet ropes,

at Wheels Through Time each and every machine inside the museum walls is kept in running and operating condition, many of which are fired up and run regularly for visitors. Over 75 percent of the collection stands in original condition—untouched survivors tracing back to the roots of motorized transportation—indicating the museum’s emphasis on originality. This very approach has been an integral part of the museum’s success in Western NC. And as it continues to grow in both

size and scope, visitors from far and wide are more than willing to share their unique experiences with friends and strangers alike, giving the museum even more momentum as it looks toward the future. So far this summer, the museum has experienced record visitation, and things only look to be getting busier. “Over the past 10 years, Wheels Through Time has enjoyed enormous success here in Maggie Valley, NC,” says museum curator Dale Walksler. “We owe a vast part

of that success to our visitors, and for our 10th Anniversary, we’d like to recognize and pay tribute to all those who have helped us become the museum that we are today.” In celebration of its 10th year in Maggie Valley, museum staff gave special tours and demonstrations of many of the rare machines at WTT, including nearly a dozen early American racing motorcycles, several significant automobiles dating back to the 1920s, and one of the newest additions to the museum collection—the “Belly Tanker”

consider to be America’s finest collection of rare American motorcycles, from 1903– Present. Many are unique, one-of-a-kind vehicles, so rare that no documentation exists. “ I was introduced to Born To Ride some years ago and being a fan of digital media I found

an interest in BTR’s TV efforts. This was in 2006. At that time I endeavored to produce my own videos here at Wheels Through Time Museum. At the same time I was introduced to Born To Ride Magazine and found their passion to be very genuine. It is quite remarkable to keep that passion for 20 years, remain objective to the industry and strive to promote the industry in a positive light. Recently we had the pleasure of meeting Ron and his family here at Wheels and what a great time we had. Subsequently I received the most recent copy of Born To Ride Magazine and found a photo gallery/story about Wheels. Great photos and story. It is always difficult to recreate an experience for something we are passionate about, however a picture is worth a thousand words and the feature story says it all. I encourage Born To Ride to stay in the forefront of the motorcycle experience and look forward to future projects ahead. To Ron and his family THANK YOU. Sincerely, Dale Walksler
