Greetings from the President Dear Family, Friends and Fans of the Fighting Scots:

As we engage upon the 2005-2006 academic year at Edinboro University, we look back with deep pride at one of the most successful years in the history of Edinboro athletics. Much of the success of our men's and women's athletic teams is due to your loyal support of our scholar-athletes in basketball, cross country, football, soccer, softball, swimming, track, volleyball, and wrestling, as well as wheelchair basketball and other adaptive sports. The long legacy of Edinboro athletics will be one of the highlights celebrated during the University's Sesquicentennial in 2006-2007. As we prepare to celebrate the University's 150th anniversary, we are guided by the vision of "Building a prosperous future through academic excellence and civility." Our athletes' dedication to education, discipline, and sportsmanship that are at the heart of Edinboro athletics will serve them well as they pursue their dreams beyond the playing fields of their alma mater. Their success in competitive endeavors will contribute to the quality of life on our campus and throughout the communities of northwestern Pennsylvania. Fans of the Fighting Scots are always welcome at Edinboro University and I look forward to greeting you at our many athletic, cultural and arts presentations. M

ike DeAnna, Bruce Baumgartner, and now Tim Flynn. Edinboro University has been blessed with outstanding wrestling coaches since elevating the program to Division I status in the mid-80's. Flynn enters his ninth season in charge of the Fighting Scot wrestlers, and prior to that he served as an assistant coach under Baumgartner for five years. The former Penn State All-American has produced quite a legacy in his eight seasons at the helm. Edinboro has dominated eastern wrestling circles during Flynn's reign, winning the Eastern Wrestling League Championship seven of the last eight years, along with the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Tournament title six times in the last eight campaigns. The Fighting Scots finished 28th at last year's NCAA Division I National Championships. That marked the first time that Edinboro had not finished in the top 25 during Flynn’s tenure, but the Fighting Scots could still take solace in Shawn Bunch’s second place finish at 133 lbs. Edinboro recorded a 12th place finish in 2001 and a 14th place finish in 2002. Edinboro has a 82-31-3 record in dual matches under Flynn. During that period he has produced 14 All-Americans and 62 national qualifiers, capped by Josh Koscheck's national championship at 174 lbs. in 2001. Koscheck became Edinboro's second all-time national champion at the Division I level, and with a third place finish in 2002, became Edinboro's first four-time All-American. Two years ago Edinboro had two All-Americans in Matt King, who finished third at 165 lbs., and Nate Yetzer, who placed eighth at 174 lbs. This past year Bunch became just the sixth Edinboro Division I wrestler to earn a runner-up spot. He concluded the year with a 40-2 record and was ranked number one in the country for over half the season. Flynn took a young and inexperienced lineup, and one which would battle injuries throughout the year, and led it to a 9-5-1 record a year ago. It would have been easy to use the inexperience and injuries as an excuse, particularly when the Fighting Scots

failed to win their fourth straight PSAC title in late January. Instead, Flynn rallied his grapplers to a resounding first place finish at the EWL Tournament, making it three straight EWL postseason titles. Bunch was the lone individual champion, but six Fighting Scots qualified for Nationals. Flynn was recognized as the PSAC Coach of the Year for the fifth time in 2004 after guiding Edinboro to a 10-3 finish and a third straight PSAC title. In 2003 he was named both the EWL and PSAC Coach of the Year. He has been recognized as the EWL Coach of the Year three times. The 2003-04 Fighting Scot edition matured as the year went on, easily capturing the PSAC crown as five grapplers brought home individual titles, one shy of the school record. Just over a month later the Fighting Scots rallied from six points down entering the final session to tie West Virginia for the EWL championship. A record-tying four Scots were crowned champions, with six Edinboro wrestlers qualifying for Nationals. Edinboro also won the EWL dual meet title for the fourth time in six seasons, unseating West Virginia with a 25-13 upset of the Mountaineers in Morgantown and ending WVU's 19-match EWL winning streak. The Fighting Scots posted a perfect 7-0 record in EWL competition. A youthful Edinboro squad surprised the experts by finishing with a 10-5 record in 2003, winning both the EWL and PSAC Championships. The Scots only finished third during the EWL dual meet season, but thanks to four first place finishes and all ten wrestlers placing no lower than fourth, Edinboro outdistanced West Virginia to reclaim the EWL Tournament crown from the Mountaineers. The PSAC Championship featured four individual champions. Matt King went on to place fourth at 165 lbs. at Nationals, with eight Scots qualifying for Nationals. The Fighting Scots posted a 10-4 ledger the year before, extending their EWL unbeaten streak to 25 straight matches before an injury-ravaged team suffered a loss at Lock Haven. The Boro edged Lock Haven in the PSAC Championships, and later went on to finish second to West Virginia at the EWL Tournament. Seven Fighting Scots qualified for Nationals at EWLs, with Koscheck and Cory Ace going on to earn AllAmerican status at Nationals.

Edinboro University Wrestling 2005-06

Ace finished eighth at 133 lbs. Edinboro finished with an 11-3-1 record in 2001, concluding the campaign with an EWL unbeaten streak of 22 matches. The streak was interrupted by a 16-16 tie with Virginia Tech early in the season, but Edinboro went on to finish as the regular season EWL champion for the sixth time in the last eight years, including the last three seasons. The Scots were 21-0-1 during their 22-match unbeaten streak. Edinboro then easily outdistanced Lock Haven at the EWL Championships. To top it off, a record-tying nine Fighting Scots qualified for Nationals, helping the Boro finish with an all-time high point total in Iowa City, IA. The 12th place finish led all eastern schools, and was the highest finish by an Edinboro squad since the 1996-97 squad finished sixth. Flynn was recognized as the EWL Coach of the Year following the 2001 season. Flynn came to Edinboro following three seasons as an assistant coach at his alma mater, Penn State. In his first season as head coach the Fighting Scots were only 7-7 in dual matches, but went on to win the PSAC Championship and the EWL Championship. It marked the first-ever EWL crown for Edinboro. With a record nine wrestlers going to Nationals, the Boro placed 15th at Nationals. In 1998-99, the Fighting Scots closed

Head Coach Tim Flynn out the season with eight straight wins to finish at 11-3-1. For the second year in a row they captured the PSAC and EWL crowns, with eight Scots heading to Penn State for the NCAA Tournament. Edinboro finished 18th among the 79-team field. Flynn was recognized as the EWL Coach of the Year thanks to a perfect 7-0 league mark. Edinboro's unbeaten dual match streak reached 19 in 1999-2000 before Central Michigan handed the Scots an 18-15 defeat. It would be the only setback that year, as Flynn's third team went 14-1. That included a first-ever win over Penn State by a 1914 count in State College. Edinboro had lost its previous eight meetings with the Nittany Lions. In addition, the Scots took first place at the prestigious Virginia Duals. The Scots would win their third straight PSAC and EWL titles, with Flynn recognized as the PSAC Coach of the Year for the third straight year. He was also honored as Edinboro's Coach of the Year in 1999-2000. Eight more wrestlers headed to Nationals, securing a 15th place finish for the Scots. Joining the program as an assistant coach prior to the start of the 1992-93 season, Flynn assisted Baumgartner to a 56-21 record during his five year period as an aide, including a perfect 14-0 dual match record and a 6th place finish at Nationals, the best in school history, in '95-96. The Scots won three out of four EWL dual meet championships from 1994-97, with perfect 6-0 records each year, and claimed just the second PSAC Championship in school history in 1994-95. Following three standout seasons at Vista High School in Vista, CA, Flynn moved east to finish his prep career at Annapolis Senior High School in Annapolis, MD. He went on to enjoy a

stellar career at Penn State, captaining the All-Americans under 1986-87 squad while earning All-American Tim Flynn honors at 134 pounds. He went 30-10-1 as a senior, winning the EWL title and finish1998 Jason Robison 190 2nd ing seventh at Nationals. Combination of Youngsters, Veterans Give Fighting Scots a Winning Outlook

Edinboro University wrestling coach

"We think we have some talented kids returning. We have a mix of young talent Tim Flynn has always set rather simple and experience. I think we have as much goals for his Fighting Scots. And Deubel must prove he can come back after sitting out last season. The 197 lb. and heavyweight classes are wide open, although the young talent is part of Flynn's enthusiasm for a well-rounded lineup. "Unlike football and basketball, you don't have to be super at the beginning of the year to get to a New Year's Day bowl," Flynn surmised. "It's the end of the year that is the true final exam. Our goals are to win the PSAC and EWL Championships. This team wants to compete much better than we have at the NCAA Tournament." With that in mind, Shawn Bunch is a three-time national qualifier and comes off Flynn has assembled a a 40-2 season and was the national runner-up at 133 lb.s schedule that should Edinboro University Wrestling 2005-06

provide a stern test for his Fighting Scots. As always, Edinboro has the EWL duals with teams like West Virginia and Pittsburgh, and Bloomsburg was muchimproved a year ago. "I think our schedule is as strong as it can be, given the built-in conference matches," Flynn stated. "We compete in what I feel are the two toughest tournaments in the country in the Southern Scuffle and the Las Vegas Invitational. We added the Missouri Open, which was really tough last year. Then we picked up Michigan State in a dual. The schedule is very challenging." Edinboro debuts in 2005-06 in the Eastern Michigan Open on Saturday, November 5. The following Saturday, November 12, the Fighting Scots open up at home with the Avalon Duals, facing Maryland, Old Dominion and Slippery Rock. Here's a look at the Fighting Scots, weight class by weight class:

125 lbs.

A year ago freshman Greg Sill was thrown to the wolves as Edinboro's lone 125 pounder. While he valiantly battled, Sill compiled a 4-22 record. "Greg has gotten a lot better," related Flynn. "He made it through a tough year. Not many kids could have done that. He needs time in the program to get bigger and stronger. In all likelihood, Ricky Deubel will take over at 125 lbs. Deubel was forced to sit out last season, but the redshirt freshman did compete as an unattached wrestler in a number of open events at 133 lbs. He won both the Edinboro Open and JCC Invitational. Deubel's resume is quite impressive, as he was the blue-chip of a strong 2004 recruiting class. He was named the Division II Most Valuable Wrestler at the 2004 Ohio State Championships after winning his second state title, and he was rated third by InterMat at 119 lbs. "On paper, Ricky is a two-time Ohio State champion and a national champion," Flynn pointed out. "Certainly down the road we expect big things from him." Patrick Wayne, a sophomore, will provide the Fighting Scots with some muchneeded depth. Wayne was the 2004 Massachusetts state champion at 125 lbs. He was 5-7 at 133 lbs.

133 lbs.

Shawn Bunch returns for his senior season with one goal in mind - the national championship. He fell just short of that goal a year ago, dropping a 6-3 decision to Travis Lee of Cornell in the title bout. Bunch page 6

2005-06 Season Preview ended the year with a 40-2 record, with both losses coming to Lee. The 40 wins tied for the sixth-highest win total. In addition, he was named the PSAC Wrestler of the Year. Bunch is a three-time national qualifier, twice at 133 lbs. and once at 125 lbs. He enters his final campaign with a 92-22 career record. "I expect him to compete for the national championship," stated Flynn. "The weight class, if anything, got harder. Hopefully with maturity he will do even better. He needs to stay focused day-to-day and not look at the big picture." Freshman Joel Webster will back up Bunch. He continues Edinboro's tradition of reaching into New England. Webster is a three-time Connecticut state champion who was 34-0 a year ago and had a career mark of 189-12.

141 lbs.

Rick McLaughlin, last year's co-starter, returns and figures to battle three redshirt freshmen for the starting role. McLaughlin, a junior, was 15-10 a year ago, including a fifth place finish at the EWL Tournament. "Rick got to wrestle at EWL's and was part of winning the team championship," Flynn commented. "Hopefully he got a taste of that and it will make him better. He has the skills. Rick needs more training, and to stay healthy." Like Deubel, Jay Morrison was one of the plums of the 2004 recruiting class. Morrison competed in a number of open events at 149 lbs., finishing with a 20-8 record. That includes a first place finish at the Edinboro Open and a second place at the SRU Open. He was a three-time PIAA place-winner while competing at Whitehall High School. "Jay is one of the young, talented kids that I think can compete right away. He has to be mature enough to handle his weight, wrestling, school. I think he's a kid who will surprise." Ryan Morgan and Seth McAlister joined Morrison as part of the 2004 class and redshirted last season. Morgan was injured early in the year and only wrestled in the Edinboro Open, splitting four matches. McAlister was 6-4 in open tournaments. "Ryan Morgan was hurt last year, and didn't wrestle a lot," Flynn related. "He needs matches. He needs to get in every open and get in the room more. This is a big year for him. He has to try and pack a year-and-a-half into the first semester. Seth McAlister didn't get as many matches in as I would have liked. Young kids need to get out and wrestle." Freshman Joe Bockmore is another grappler competing for time at 141 lbs. Bockmore finished fourth in the Ohio state championships a year ago while competing for Wellington High School.

149 lbs.

This weight class took a turn with the loss of Ron Doppelheuer to illness, but the Fighting

Scots are fortunate to have an experienced wrestler in Zach Plerhoples. The junior was in his first season as the starter a year ago before Doppelheuer moved up from 141 lbs. in late January. Plerhoples finished with a 16-13 ledger. "Zach had a taste of collegiate wrestling a year ago," stated Flynn. "He was in the lineup for most of the year, just not at the end. He has the work ethic, he just needs to improve. He has to adapt and make adjustments." Matt Chelsted is another returnee. A junior, Chelsted joined the team in 2003-04 but missed a good portion of the season with injuries. He was 2-9 last year, but Flynn was pleased he got some mat time. "Matt wrestled a lot last year," Flynn assessed. "He does whatever's asked of him. He's one of our hardest-working kids. Hopefully that will pay off." Another one of the youngsters to keep an eye is Gregor Gillespie. A true freshman, Gillespie was an early signee who went on to capture his second New York state title. Competing at 145 lbs., Gillespie was a five-time placewinner and finished his career with a 23814 record. He went 6-1 at Nationals this past year, bringing his season record to 51-1. "Gregor is a blue-chip kid," Flynn commented. "He's a tremendous athlete. All of the things people saw in Shawn Bunch as a freshman, they'll see in him. We won't try to change much, just refine." Finally, there's Ezra Davis, a 23-year-old freshman who joined the military after graduating from Oil City(Pa.) High School in 2001. Flynn notes that he is very eager to learn and compete, although it will take some time after the extended layoff. Davis was a two-time fourth place finisher at the PIAA Championships.

Matt Hill qualified for nationals in his first season as a starter, and Flynn expects bigger and better things this season. "Matt is one of those wrestlers with a full year under his belt, and he did a great job. It was a disappointing end, because he didn't compete well at Nationals. He's hungry. His work ethic makes him special. He's close to being super." The junior finished with a 30-14 record a

year ago, placing fourth at the EWL Tournament and second at the PSAC Championships. He also took home a third place at the Southern Scuffle. Hill went 1-2 at Nationals. Michael Ashby and Mohamed Osman also return. Ashby is a senior who has battled injuries throughout his career. At one point in time he was the starter at 149 lbs., but the he endured three injury-filled years since then. "We need to keep Mike healthy so he can compete," admitted Flynn. "He's real excited to see how good he can be. He has the ability, but he needs mat time." Osman joined the team as a walk-on a year ago. "We need to build him up," stressed Flynn. "We need to get him bigger and stronger. It's a big transition from high school to college. He's made it mentally. Now we need to build up his body." Ryan Uber rounds out the 157 lb. weight class. A freshman from Warren(Pa.) High School, Uber will likely redshirt.

165 lbs.

The loss of a wrestler the caliber of a Nate Yetzer would normally send teams scrambling, but just as Yetzer was the perfect replacement for All-American Matt King, so should Deonte Penn fill in nicely for Yetzer. Penn was redshirted a year ago, and while taking the time off he moved up from 149 lbs. to 165 lbs. Flynn feels the change will catch many people off guard. "People who haven't seen him compete over the last year are going to think of this skinny kid, stated Flynn. “But he has gotten much bigger. He had a really productive redshirt year. He improved a ton last year. He has the ability to beat the top kids." Penn qualified for nationals in 2004 while wrestling at 149 lbs., winning the EWL championship and finishing with a 27-13 record with 12 falls. The 12 falls ranked 12th all-time, and he is tied for 14th in career falls with 19. Penn then went 14-3 in open tournaments last year, capturing first place at the Kent State Open and Edinboro Open. He also placed third at the EMU Open, with the lone loss coming to Yetzer. Another loss was to Mark Perry of Iowa, last year's national runner-up at 165 lbs. Sophomore Brendan Casey, a transfer from Rhode Island College will back up Penn. Casey is another of the New England wrestlers on the Fighting Scots, and a former teammate at Lowell(MA) High School of Patrick Wayne. Casey won two state titles.

174 lbs.

Eric Ring made a nice transition from 157 lbs. to 174 lbs., and in the process fought off one of the top 2004 recruits for the starting job. With a year under his belt at the heavier weight, along with more confidence, Flynn expects Ring to have a strong senior campaign. "Eric might have surprised himself and

Edinboro University Wrestling 2005-06

others last year," admitted Flynn. "He moved up two weight classes and has changed for the better. He has become a leader, both on the mat and in the locker room. We are very happy with him." A year ago Ring was in and out of the national rankings, finishing with a 25-18 record and earning a trip to Nationals with a second place finish at the EWL Tournament. He totaled seven wins by fall. Ring also captured third place at the PSAC Championships, although his best effort might have come at the Las Vegas Invitational, with a fourth place finish. Ring will likely once again have to fend off Phil Moricone, who did nothing to dissuade Flynn and his staff of his ability while redshirting. Moricone, a three-time New Hampshire state champion, was rated sixth by InterMat at 171 lbs. a year ago as a prepster. He stayed active a year ago, going 16-10 in open tournaments with 5 falls. He took third place at both the JCC Invitational and the SRU Open. "Phil had a great redshirt year," beamed Flynn. "He's one of the kids who had a taste of college wrestling, and wants more. He will be a big part of our future."

184 lbs.

Two-time national qualifier Alex Clemsen returns after redshirting a year ago. The time off gave Clemsen an opportunity to heal from some injuries, and also to work on his wrestling. Just as Bunch took his wrestling to another level after redshirting, Flynn hopes the same his true for Clemsen. "Alex had a real good offseason. He wrestled freestyle for the first time. During his freshman and sophomore years people saw it in him, now he's ready to take the next step and be an elite guy." Clemsen enters his junior year with 50 wins, a pair of PSAC titles, and a second and third place finish at EWL's. With West Virginia's Greg Jones gone, Clemsen looks to step up and become the top EWL competitor at 184 lbs. He finished with a 22-6 record in 200304. Clemsen did not return to competition until late January this year, competing in two events, the JCC Invitational and the Edinboro Open. He won both, going 8-0 in the process. Donald Walker, a junior, or freshman C.J. Ferrara are in reserve, although last year's starter Jim Gibson could move down from 197 lbs. if need be. Walker was 7-10 last year while competing at 174 lbs. The possibility exists that Walker could redshirt, as well. "Donald is moving up a weight class," noted Flynn. "We're anxious to see if that helps him." Ferrara is also a candidate to redshirt. Flynn feels he is another of the young wrestlers who will benefit from time in the workout room. He wrestled at Cranford(NJ) High School, where he was 30-2 at 171 lbs. as a senior, winning the district championship.

page 8

2005-06 Season Preview 197 lbs.

No fewer than five wrestlers will compete for what is a wide-open starting job. Mike LaBella earned the starting role in January of 2004 as a true freshman, but an injury in early February forced LaBellea to the sideline. He was 17-16 up to that point. Now LaBella will likely redshirt, both to further recover from injury and because it was originally planned that he would redshirt this season. The favorite to start is Jim Gibson, who has bounced between 184 and 197 lbs. the last two years. A fourth-year junior, Gibson took over as the starter for Clemsen at 184 lbs. last year, and enjoyed a solid season. He finished with a 21-15 record, placing second at the PSAC Championships and fourth at the EWL Tournament. He also earned a second place finish at the EMU Open and a third place at the Body Bar Invitational. "Jim helped us win the EWL title while competing at 184 lbs.," commented Flynn. "He barely missed going to Nationals. I think we'll see an even better Jim Gibson this year. " When LaBella went down a year ago, Flynn had to choose between a pair of his 2004 recruits, Paul Burger and Joe Fendone. Burger got the nod and took his lumps at times, particularly since he got a late start due to football. He finished with a 3-7 record, placing fifth at the EWL Tournament. "Paul was in a tough situation," admitted Flynn. "He missed the preseason conditioning and was going to redshirt. But he stepped in and helped us win the EWL's. He has the ability. Now he has to toughen his body up and mature physically." As a prepster Burger was Mentor(OH) High School's first All-American after a fifth place finish at 215 lbs. at the NHCSA Nationals. Fendone, meanwhile, joined Edinboro a year ago after earning three Massachusetts state championships at 215 lbs., setting school records with a 176-6 career mark and 120 falls. Injuries limited his time a year ago, as he only competed in the JCC Invitational, placing third. "Joe is another one of our young, talented kids," reiterated Flynn. "He needs bouts. He didn't get enough matches. He has to pack in the practices. He was hurt a little bit last year. He missed out on preseason conditioning." The fifth competitor is Pat Bradshaw, a freshman from nearby Saegertown High School, who follows his father Jeff as a wrestler at Edinboro. Bradshaw capped an outstanding high school career by winning the PIAA Class AA state championship at 189 lbs. He finished the year with a 41-1 record, and was 102-21 for his career despite missing his sophomore season. "In a perfect world, we will sit him," admitted Flynn. "If he is ready to go, we will wrestle him right away. He's a hard worker who typifies our great recruiting class."

Hwt.

With Joe Hennis no longer on the team, the heavyweight job shapes up as a four-way battle, with little experience there. However, Flynn likes what he sees from a talent perspective, but admits the job is wide open. In terms of tenure at Edinboro, the most experienced is Jeremy Mosley, who was an undersized heavyweight after moving up from 197 lbs. a year ago. Mosley was a top recruit several years ago, but it has taken him some time to fully recover from a high school knee injury. He finished with a 7-8 record while competing in dual meets, moving up to heavyweight midway through the year. "Jeremy has gotten a little bigger," Flynn pointed out. "He moved up last year, and wasn't big enough. He's gotten bigger and better. He can see there's an opportunity there." Koel Davia is a sophomore who represented Edinboro at the Las Vegas Invitational last year. Davia finished with a 7-10 ledger, capturing first place at the JCC Invitational. As a prepster he became just the second heavyweight ever in Ohio to win three state championships, capping a 167-27 career mark. He won the titles his final three years, going 49-2 as a senior at Union Local High School. "Koel got some work in with Hennis out," commented Flynn. "We hope he is excited about this season." Flynn was pleased to bring in Terry Tate, the PIAA Class AA state champion, as part of his 2005 recruiting class. Tate finished with a perfect 47-0 record, with 36 wins by fall. While wrestling for Tyrone High School, he was a two-time place-winner and finished his career with a 149-24 record, a school record for wins. "Terry is a hardworking young kid," Flynn stated. "Terry, Pat Bradshaw, they really work hard, and don't say much. He's a pretty talented kid for a heavyweight. He's going to be pretty good."
