Head Coach
Missy Soboleski 3rd Year Gannon ‘93
F
ormer Edinboro University President Dr. Frank G. Pogue announced the hiring of Missy Soboleski as head volleyball coach on February 3, 2005. Soboleski replaced Dale Flickinger, who was hired on an interim basis in late July to replace Lynn Theehs, who went to the University of Maine. After a slow start, Soboleski returned the Fighting Scots to the ranks of the elite in the Atlantic Region. Edinboro finished its first season under Soboleski’s tutelage with a 2616 ledger, and was selected for the NCAA Division II Playoffs. The 26 wins were particularly impressive since the Fighting Scots were struggling at 7-12 entering the final weekend in September. They would go on to win 17 of their final 19 regular season matches to qualify for the PSAC Tournament with a third place finish in the Western Division. With a four-game win over Millersville in the quarterfinals, Edinboro reached the semifinals before falling in three games to Lock Haven. The same fate held true in the Atlantic Regional, as the Fighting Scots defeated Mount Olive in three games in the quarterfinals, but then lost in three games to Lees-McRae in the semifinals. The Fighting Scots weren’t as fortunate in the 2006 campaign, as a young squad lost five of its last six matches to finish at 19-17. Two of those losses came in five games. Soboleski is well-known in local volleyball circles. She has previously coached at two local institutions, Mercyhurst and
Gannon. She took over the Edinboro program after serving as the head coach at Mercyhurst from 1999-2004. At Mercyhurst, she inherited a volleyball program that had not had a winning season since 1993, had won only five games in four years in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC), and had recorded just 26 wins in five previous seasons. She proceeded to lead the Lady Lakers to three winning seasons in six years at the helm, including a 21-8 finish in 2002, winning the Southern Division championship. The 2001 team went 19-16, and her 2003 team was 1615. Prior to taking over at Mercyhurst, Soboleski spent four seasons as the head coach at her alma mater, Gannon, where she was previously a standout player. Her 199598 Lady Knight editions reached the GLIAC Playoffs twice, including a 21-14 record in her first season, with Gannon reaching the NCAA Division II Playoffs. Soboleski's final team was 18-16 and qualified for the GLIAC Playoffs. She was an assistant coach under Gerry (Burbules) Vensel, a member of the Edinboro Athletic Hall of Fame, in 1994. "It has always been our intention to keep Edinboro University volleyball in the forefront of the PSAC and the region," related Director of Athletics Bruce Baumgartner. "We think coach Soboleski has what it takes to continue Edinboro University's winning tradition. We feel our program is in very good hands. Missy brings a great deal of energy and experience to our program, and she is very familiar with what Edinboro volleyball represents. We also like the fact that she enjoyed an excellent graduation rate at Mercyhurst.” A native of Rootstown, Ohio, Soboleski graduated from Gannon in 1993 with a bachelor's degree in Education and a minor in Sports Management and Health & Physical

Education. A four-year letterwinner for the Lady Knights from 1990 to 1993, Gannon was 116-22 during that period. That included three straight trips to the Elite Eight to conclude her playing career. Soboleski enjoyed a distinguished career as a player, serving as a co-captain in 1993. The outside hitter earned a spot on the Hamot Classic All-Tournament team as a senior, then capped her career by earning All-Tournament accolades in the NCAA Division II Atlantic Regional. She totaled 14 kills
and 16 digs in the regional final win over Slippery Rock, propelling Gannon to its third straight trip to the Elite Eight. Soboleski and her husband, Mark, reside in Edinboro with their three children -- Madison (7) and twins Braeden and Abigale (4). While at Gannon she also served as the SWA/Assistant Athletic Director. Mark previously served as the head football coach at Central High School and is a teacher in the Millcreek School District.

enn Ax joined the Edinboro coaching staff as interim assistant coach in August 2006. Ax is no stranger to head coach Missy Soboleski, having played for the current Edinboro head coach when she served in a similar capacity at nearby Mercyhurst College. In fact, Ax (fomerly Jenn Barba) enjoyed a record-setting career for the Lakers, culminated by her selection as Mercyhurst’s Female Athlete of the Year in 2004. She earned second team All-GLIAC honors as a junior and senior, and was an honorable mention choice her first two years. In addition, she was named to the GLIAC All-Academic Team three times. Ax holds Mercyhurst career records for games played (449), career block solos (165), career block assists (355), and career total blocks (520). She ranks second in career kills (1,311) and career kill percentage (.328) and is third in career attempts (2,949). In addition, she is tied for the school record for kills in a game with 27, along with block assists (9) and block solos (10) in a match. Two years ago Ax served as a graduate intern at Westminster College. A native of Meadville, PA and a former standout at Meadville High School, Ax received her bachelor’s degree in Art from Mercyhurst in May 2004. While playing for Meadville High School, she was a second team All-State selection in 1999-2000 and was named the Tri-County Athletic Conference MVP both years. Ax resides in Erie with her husband of just under a year, James Ax.

ormer Edinboro volleyball player Kristen Perkins will serve as a student assistant coach while finishing work on her undergraduate degree in Nursing. A native of Perrysburg, OH, Perkins was limited a year ago to 55 games due to injuries. She finished with 97 kills and had 23 total blocks while playing outside hitter. In 2005, she totaled 159 kills and 37 blocks while playing in 108 games. She had a career-high 15 kills against Notre Dame(OH). As a freshman, she participated in 80 games, totaling 88 kill. Perkins played her high school volleyball at Perrysburg High School, where she was a two-year letterwinner who was recognized as the Most Improved Player.

Most coaches view youth as a potential concern.
For Edinboro University volleyball coach Missy Soboleski, youth is viewed as a strength. Of course, it’s also the athleticism of the youth that makes the youngsters so enticing. Sure, her Fighting Scots have three seniors on the 2007 roster, including first team All-PSAC West performer Jenna Newman. But it’s the four freshmen and four sophomores that get the third-year Edinboro mentor excited. “Our strength in numbers is in our youth, with eight freshmen and sophomores,” reiterated Soboleski. “We have three sophomores who were key players a year ago, and several freshmen will make immediate contributions.” At the same time, Soboleski likes the fact that seniors Jenna Benkelman, Breanna Smith, and Newman have taken over a key leadership role. “I’m really impressed with the enthusiasm of our seniors over the summer. I’m hoping that their enthusiasm is infectious to the rest of the team.” Edinboro posted a 19-17 finish a year after going 26-16 in Soboleski’s first year at the helm. Soboleski feels the 2007 team’s success will depend on ball control. “We’ll give every team a good match,” she predicted. “We’ll be competitive, even with the youth. I think we’ll be a little more defense-oriented this year. Our strength is in the middle. What I really like is that we have ‘eye of the tiger’ type kids. “If we control the ball well on first contact, we’ll be successful,” she continued. “We have quickness and power at the net, and athletes who can place the ball. The key will be our setters delivering the ball at a consistent speed and location. Our goal is to run the ball through our middle hitters and run the offense at the speed we want. We want to rely on our speed and quickness to win matches.” With the graduation of setter Ashley Cottengim, the ball control that Soboleski craves will be largely in the hands of the young players. Jenna Newman
Page 4
2007 Season Preview
That doesn’t bother her in the least. “There will be a lot of pressure put on them from the beginning,” Soboleski stressed. “They have to get used to it. They’ve played the game for a long time. The thing will be catching up with the speed of the game. That’s why we recruit so heavily at the club level. They play at a faster speed.” Edinboro will open the 2007 campaign on August 24-25 at the Grace College Classic against IU-Southeast. That is one of three tournaments the Fighting Scots will compete in prior to opening PSAC West competition on September 11 against California(Pa.). “I’m hoping the pre-conference tournament will prepare us for what promises to be a tough conference schedule,” related Soboleski. “The PSAC is pretty competitive, particularly the Western Division. In the West, almost anyone can beat anyone.”
Middle Hitters
In Jenna Newman, the Fighting Scots possess one of the top middle hitters in the PSAC, and certainly one of the most athletic. The 5’11” senior earned first team All-PSAC West honors a year ago after finishing second in the PSAC in hitting percentage (.353), and fourth in kills. Newman finished the year with 470 kills, the second time in three seasons she has paced the team in kills. That figure is also the fifth-highest in school history. In addition, she led the Scots in total blocks (85). Newman enters her senior campaign ranked second in school history in kills with 1,283. Only Ashley Walton’s 1,906 kills are better. She also ranks seventh in career block solos (40), career block assists (208) and career total blocks (248), along with seventh in career kills per game (3.01), and tenth in career hitting percentage (.292). “Jenna is a force in the middle,” noted Soboleski. “She will be our ‘go-to’ player at the net, and every team we play knows it. She is one of the best athletes in the PSAC.” Several players will battle to play alongside Newman. Most prominent are Olivia Williams and Brittany Slauterbeck. Both are sophomores who made big contributions as freshmen. The only question this year is they stay in the middle or move to the outside. Williams joined the Edinboro program as a very raw 5’9” recruit. Soboleski knew she eventually would be a force, but few figured it would be so quick. All Williams did was go on to earn PSAC West Rookie of the Year honors while playing both middle and outside hitter. Williams finished second to Newman in kills with 345, and was also second hitting percentage (.230). She finished just behind Newman in total blocks, as well, with 83. “We’re hoping that our All-PSAC West Rookie of the Year can pick up where she left off,” admitted Soboleski. “She came in as a raw freshman with an unbelievable ceiling. We didn’t expect her to work her way into the lineup until midway through the season, but due to an injury she had to step in and play the right side. She did a great job. She is so quick and agile. Plus she has great natural jumping ability.”

2007 Season Preview
While Williams may not be a true middle hitter, Slauterbeck is. The 5’9” sophomore is regarded as Edinboro’s best blocker, and like Williams, she possesses excellent quickness and athleticism. Slauterbeck had 273 kills, good for third on the team, adding 113 digs. She finished with 78 total blocks. “Brittany enjoyed a strong freshman season and is the most powerful attacker on the team,” noted Soboleski. “She explodes on the ball, thanks in great part to her work in the weight room. Brittany came from a great club program that trained off the court very hard, and she kept that same philosophy when she got here. She is most at home in the middle, but will be an option at all attacking positions, as she is selfless player who will do whatever is best for the team.” Chrissy Steger is a much-improved 5’9” sophomore who saw limited playing time a year ago. That should change after an excellent spring season. Steger played in six games a year ago. In addition to competing for time in the middle, she could also see action on the right side. “Chrissy was probably our most improved player and left a great impression after our spring season,” Soboleski assessed. “She didn’t get much playing in the fall, but she came into the spring with something to prove. She hit the weight room hard and is now more powerful at the net.”
Outside Hitters
Seniors Jenna Benkelman and Breanna Smith are two competitors for the outside hitter position, but they’ll have to hold off a strong group of freshmen. The 5’9” Benkelman had 158 kills and 259 digs last year, along with leading the team with 55 service aces. “Jenna will be a frontrunner for our OH-2 position,”” commented Soboleski. “She has the best and most natural touch and feel for the ball on the first contact. She also has a great serve and we will look for points from her there.” Smith has been a key performer for three years. A year ago, the 6’0” senior finished with 156 kills and 54 service aces despite missing considerable time due to injuries, playing in just 92 games. She has 694 career kills. “Like Jenna Newman, Breanna can be a force at the net. Her ball control and nose to the ball improved tremendously over the spring, and we look for that to continue. She will be one of the frontrunners for our OH-1 position,” stated Soboleski. Samantha Kuehner is a 5’10” sophomore who totaled 159 digs while playing in 114 games a year ago. She has a chance to see considerable action at outside hitter or libero, with defense and ballhandling her main strengths. Soboleski noted, “Sam got a lot of playing time in the outside hitting position, mainly in a defensive role. She did a great job and has also displayed a nice touch on the ball. She will be one of the top passers on the team.” Kaitlin Hartman, a 5’7” freshman, will also seek playing time at outside hitter. She earned conference MVP honors as a senior while playing at Cuyahoga Heights (OH) High School. Freshmen Danielle Martzolf, 5’9”, will look for action at
Edinboro Volleyball 2007
outside hitter or on the right side. She is regarded as a very powerful hitter. She starred at Lancaster(NY) High School, helping the Redskins to a pair of New York state championships. Martzolf was a first team all-state selection as a senior and earned second team accolades as a junior. Williams, Slauterbeck and Steger also figure to challenge for time on the right side, depending on how the middle hitter situation falls out.
Setters/Liberos
With Ashley Cottengim and Amelia Robinson gone, these two positions will have a new look, and possibly a very youthful appearance. Alissa Chutz has seen limited action in her two seasons as a reserve setter. The 5’9” junior comes off a solid spring, and has made great strides defensively. “Alissa trained tremendously hard this spring. She always has, but this was her spring to really get to train in matches as our starting setter,” Soboloeski noted. “She has put herself in a position to compete for the setting position.” She will look to hold off 5’8” freshman Katie Wilkins. Soboleski notes that Wilkins is a natural with excellent speed in delivering the ball to the hitters. She played at Elkhart Memorial(IN) High School, helping the Chargers to a 31-3 record. Kuehner and freshman Maureen Tilert look to be the top competitors at libero. Soboleski views Tilert as a tenacious player and an outstanding athlete. The 5’3” Tilert earned All-Western New York honors as a senior while playing at Lakeshore(NY) High School.

Coach Soboleski Comments: “Brit enjoyed a strong freshman season and is the most powerful attacker on the team. She explodes on the ball, thanks in great part to her work in the weight room. Brit came from a great club program that trained off the court very hard, and she kept that same philosophy when she got here. We will look for her to get more points at the net this year as one of our first options. Brit is also the team’s best blocker. She is most at home in the middle, but will be an option at all attacking positions, as she is selfless player who will do whatever is best for the team.”

The Pa. State Athletic Conference
The Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference, with 56 years of organized competition, has established itself as one of the most respected NCAA Division II athletic conferences. In its history the PSAC has laid claim to 38 NCAA team champions and 210 individual title winners, giving credence to its fine athletic tradition. The conference has prospered on the national level in recent years, as it annually has close to one-third of its teams participating in NCAA postseason competition. The PSAC also distinguishes itself as the second largest Division II conference in terms of sports sponsorship, awarding titles for 22 different sports. While proud of its athletic success, the league has also thrived in an academic sense. The number of student-athletes designated by the conference as “ScholarAthletes” - those who have attained a cumulative grade point average of 3.25 or better - has increased nearly every year since that standard was adopted in 199596. The impressive number of yearly designees reached 1,420 in 2006-07. The PSAC was organized in 1951 for the purpose of promoting and administering men’s athletic programs within the 14 state teachers colleges in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. In 1977, due to the interest and growth of women’s athletics, the conference was restructured to provide for women’s programs. From its inception, each conference member selected its own competitive division within the NCAA. In 1980, however, the presidents voted to reclassify the entire conference to Division II. Although all 14 institutions are members of NCAA Division II, eight schools have also elected to compete at the Division I level in select sports. In 1983, all member institutions were granted university status as a result

The alumni of the State System is over 600,000, which includes roughly 405,000 Pennsylvanians. One of the largest conferences in the nation, the PSAC is governed by the presidents of the 14 member institutions. The Honor Roll Rosie Weisenseel
AVCA All-American
Ashley Walton -- Third Team, 2002 & 2003
Ashley Walton is the only Edinboro University volleyball player to ever earn AVCA Division II AllAmerican honors. The 5’10” middle hitter from Manchester, PA was a third team selection in 2002, then duplicated that fete in 2003. Those were one of many honors earned by Walton during her career. She was recognized as the PSAC West Player of the Year as a senior, and also earned All-Atlantic Region honors all four years. She was a four-time All-PSAC choice, as well, earning second team honors as a freshman before moving up to the first team her final three years. As a freshman, she was also the Atlantic Region and PSAC West Rookie of the Year.

Gregor Gillespie became Edinboro’s third NCAA Division I National Champion in March, defeating Josh Churella of Michigan, 3-1 in overtime, to capture the 149 lb. national title. Gillespie was named the EWL and PSAC Wrestler of the Year after finishing the year with a 34-2 record.
Rachael Lanzel enjoyed an outstanding cross country season. The junior led the Fighting Scot women’s cross country team to a tenth place finish at Nationals. Individually, she placed fourth at Nationals, the highest finish by an Edinboro female runner in years. In addition, Lanzel captured the PSAC championship and was named the PSAC Women’s Runner of the Year.

Edinboro Excels in 2006-07
s we embark on the 2007-08 academic year, it’s hard not to take a look back and marvel at the accomplishments of the 2006-07 Fighting Scots. Edinboro athletics enjoyed a banner year, both on the playing fields and in the classroom. Edinboro won a pair of Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference championships, in women’s cross country and wrestling, while no fewer than six teams made it to the NCAA Playoffs, or had individual representatives. It’s hard to know where to start, so we’ll go by season. The football team finished at 6-5 under firstyear coach Scott Browning, but linebacker Ben Stroup was named the PSAC West Defensive Player of the Year and quarterback Trevor Harris was chosen the PSAC West Rookie of the Year. Stroup would go on to be accorded first team AP Little All-America honors. Volleyball also had a major award winner, as Olivia Williams was named the PSAC West Rookie of the Year. But the fall belonged to the cross country teams. The women’s team featured a youthful lineup all year, while the men’s team was decimated by injury. Yet at the end of the year both qualified for Nationals, with the women’s team finishing tenth and the men’s squad 19th. Rachael Lanzel led the women’s team to its ninth straight PSAC title and won the individual crown. The junior would go on to earn All-American honors for the second time, finishing fourth at Nationals. Dave Niemira was an All-American on the men’s side. The wrestling team capped the winter season, although the wheelchair basketball team certainly gave the grapplers a run for their money. The Fighting Scot wrestlers finished in the top ten at the NCAA Division I wrestling championships for the second straight year, placing ninth. Three wrestlers earned All-American honors, led by Gregor Gillespie. The sophomore became Edinboro’s third national champion, winning the crown at 149 lbs. Alex Clemsen placed fourth at 184 lbs. and Deonte Penn repeated as an All-American at 165 lbs., finishing seventh. In addition to the PSAC title, Edinboro won its fifth straight EWL crown and ninth in ten years. The wheelchair basketball team hosted the 30th National Intercollegiate Wheelchair Basketball Tournament, and nearly came away with a national title. The Scots upset second-seeded Illinois in the semifinals, then put a scare into top-ranked Wisconsin-Whitewater before eventually losing, 7158. Jose Leep and Jason Matthews were accorded second team All-American honors, and Mike Looney

was an Academic All-American. Brooke Heath continued her incredible career in the pool. The junior eraned three All-American certificates at Nationals, and is now an eight-time All-American in swimming. That takes us to the spring, where the softball team made its first-ever appearance in the NCAA Playoffs. Behind the left arm of Vanessa Rose, the Fighting Scots upset Kutztown and Shippensburg before finally being eliminated. The success was just as evident in the classroom. Edinboro’s annual Scholar- Athlete Banquet included 112 honorees. That means nearly forty percent of the total student-athlete population maintains a grade-point average of 3.00 or higher. Clemsen and Lanzel were also named to the PSAC Top Ten. Clemsen was voted to the winter team for the second straight year, while Lanzel earned a spot on the fall team.
