Missy Soboleski 4th Year Gannon 93

M

issy Soboleski was hired as head volleyball coach at Edinboro University on February 3, 2005. Soboleski replaced Dale Flickinger, who was hired on an interim basis in late July to replace Lynn Theehs, who went to the University of Maine. After a slow start, Soboleski returned the Fighting Scots to the ranks of the elite in the Atlantic Region in her first season. Edinboro finished its first year under Soboleski s tutelage with a 26 16 ledger, and was selected for the NCAA Division II Playoffs. The 26 wins were particularly impressive since the Fighting Scots were struggling at 7 12 entering the final weekend in September. They would go on to win 17 of their final 19 regular season matches to qualify for the PSAC Tournament with a third place finish in the Western Division. With a four game win over Millersville in the quar terfinals, Edinboro reached the semifinals before falling in three games to Lock Haven. The same fate held true in the Atlantic Regional, as the Fighting Scots defeated Mount Olive in three games in the quar terfinals, but then lost in three games to Lees McRae in the semifinals. The Fighting Scots weren t as fortunate in the 2006 campaign, as a young squad lost five of its last six matches to finish at 19 17. Two of those losses came in

five games. This past year saw the Fighting Scots finish with a 28 11 record, the most wins since the 1998 edition also won 28 matches. Edinboro enjoyed a successful playoff run, reaching the PSAC Tournament semifi nals, then falling in the finals of the Atlantic Regional Championship. Soboleski is well known in local volleyball circles. She has previously coached at two local institutions, Mercyhurst and Gannon. She took over the Edinboro program after serving as the head coach at Mercyhurst from 1999 2004. At Mercyhurst, she inherited a volleyball program that had not had a winning season since 1993, had won only five games in four years in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC), and had recorded just 26 wins in five previous seasons. She proceeded to lead the Lady Lakers to three winning seasons in six years at the helm, including a 21 8 finish in 2002, winning the Southern Division championship. The 2001 team went 19 16, and her 2003 team was 16 15. Prior to taking over at Mercyhurst, Soboleski spent four seasons as the head coach at her alma mater, Gannon, where she was previously a standout player. Her 1995 98 Lady Knight editions reached the GLIAC Playoffs twice, including a 21 14 record in her first season, with Gannon reaching the NCAA Division II Playoffs. Soboleski's final team was 18 16 and qual ified for the GLIAC Playoffs. She was an assistant coach under Gerry (Burbules) Vensel, a member of the Edinboro Athletic Hall of Fame, in 1994. "It has always been our intention to keep Edinboro University volleyball in the forefront of the PSAC and the region," related Director of Athletics Bruce Baumgartner. "We think coach Soboleski has what it takes to continue Edinboro University's win ning tradition. We feel our program is in very good hands. Missy brings a great deal of energy and expe rience to our program, and she is very familiar with what Edinboro volleyball represents. We also like the fact that she enjoyed an excellent graduation rate at Mercyhurst.

Head Coach A native of Rootstown, Ohio, Soboleski graduated from Gannon in 1993 with a bachelor's degree in Education and a minor in Sports Management and Health & Physical Education. A four year letterwinner for the Lady Knights from 1990 to 1993, Gannon was 116 22 during that period. That included three straight trips to the Elite Eight to conclude her playing career. Soboleski enjoyed a distinguished career as a player, serving as a co captain in 1993. The outside hitter earned a spot on the Hamot Classic All Tournament team as a senior, then capped her career by earning All

Tournament accolades in the NCAA Division II Atlantic Regional. She totaled 14 kills and 16 digs in the regional final win over Slippery Rock, propelling Gannon to its third straight trip to the Elite Eight. Soboleski and her husband, Mark, reside in Edinboro with their three children Madison (8) and twins Braeden and Abigale (5). While at Gannon she also served as the SWA/Assistant Athletic Director. Mark is a teacher in the Millcreek School District and serves as the head foot ball coach at McDowell High School.

2008 Season Preview W

ith seven veterans returning, including five players who saw considerable action a year ago, the Edinboro University volleyball team has a solid foundation. But it will likely be the impact of no fewer than eight newcomers that will ultimately signal how good the 2008 Fighting Scots will be. We always look to win the conference, pointed out fourth year head coach Missy Soboleski. A year ago, Edinboro fell just short, reach ing the semifinals before suffering a four game loss to California(Pa.). That loss halted a solid postseason run that saw the Fighting Scots reach the semifinals of the PSAC Playoffs before advancing to the finals of the Atlantic Regional. That left Edinboro with a final record of 28 11 and two NCAA Playoff appearances in Soboleski s first three seasons. It also rep resented the most wins since the 1998 team posted 28 wins. The Fighting Scots must replace three key members of last year s squad Jenna Benkelman, Breanna Smith, and All American Jenna Newman. All will be difficult to replace, but filling Newman s shoes will be particularly hard. She departed with 1,899 kills, ranking second all time at Edinboro. You never really replace anyone, related Soboleski. The team chemistry changes every year with what you lose and add to your ros ter. Newman, Jenna and Bre were aggressive, confident players who will be tough to replace. Throw in such a large number of newcomers and building team chemistry will no doubt hold the key to a return to postseason action. With this number of incoming freshmen, we must try to create and generate team chemistry, stressed Soboleski. If we compete hard and to the best of our ability, we ll be successfull. We ve added some athleticism and some height, she continued. I m excited to get them on the court and see how they all fit together. I have some ideas, but really we have to get them here. That s where the list of return ing veterans comes into play. For starters, there s Olivia Williams and Brittany Slauterbeck, who figure to start at middle hitter. Williams earned All Atlantic Region honors a year ago after being named the 2006 PSAC West Rookie of the Year. Then there s Brittany Slauterbeck Katie Wilkins, who

Page 4

made it two straight Rookie of the Year honorees for Edinboro after set ting a school record for assists as a freshman. She was also the lone freshman to earn All Region honors. Throw in Sam Kuehner and Maureen Tilert and the Fighting Scots have a solid foundation to build upon. Like Wilkins, Tilert was another freshman who played a huge role in 2007. Edinboro opens the 2008 campaign with two tournaments before beginning league play on September 9 against Indiana(Pa.). The Fighting Scots get underway in the Shepherd Ram Rumble on Friday, August 29 and Saturday, August 30. The following weekend they will compete in the University of Sciences Devils Classic. Following the league opener against We ve added some athleti IUP, Edinboro figures to cism and some height. I m receive its sternest test excited to get them on the of the season while par ticipating in the Central court and see how they all fit Missouri Challenge. The together. I have some ideas, Fighting Scots play Emporia State (27 9 in but really we have to get 2007) the first day, then them here. square off against Pittsburg State (28 9) Head coach Missy Soboleski and the host Jennies on the second day. Central Missouri was 31 7 a year ago. All three teams were participants in the South Central Regional. The Central Missouri Tournament will really test us, admitted Soboleski. That s why we re going. We want to get a good test before conference play. The PSAC West has a new look in 2008. The addition of Gannon and Mercyhurst to the Western Division shifts Lock Haven, a long time power in the PSAC, into the Eastern Division. The Fighting Scots will still have to contend with California(Pa.), the PSAC champion who was 35 4 and reached the Elite Eight, and a Clarion squad which was 28 6 last year.

Middle Hitters The Fighting Scots will have their hands full trying to replace All American Jenna Newman, who departed with the second most kills in school history. That being said, Soboleski knows that Edinboro has a pair of expe rienced middle hitters in juniors Brittany Slauterbeck (5 9 ) and Olivia Williams (5 9 ). They both bring a different flavor to the position. Brittany is our best blocker and our most explosive hitter, noted Soboleski. Olivia is so quick and athletic. She s a versatile player. I d put her up against anybody in the PSAC. Slauterbeck was third in the Scots in kills with 351 and ranked sec ond in total blocks with 90. Williams, meanwhile, was second in kills (430) and third in total blocks (88). She earned honorable mention AVCA All Atlantic Region honors after being named the PSAC West Rookie of the Year as a freshman. Junior Chrissy Steger (5 9 ) saw limited action a year ago, finishing with 14 kills and 10 service aces in 18 games. Chrissy has made strides and is a versatile player who could see time at middle hitter or oppo site, commented Soboleski. Slauterbeck could also see time at opposite if Gina Boothe is ready to step in immediately. A 6 1 freshman from Anderson High School in Cincinnati, Ohio, Boothe was a four year starter who was the FAVC Player of the Year as a senior in addition to earning first team all league

Edinboro Volleyball 2008

2008 Season Preview honors her final three years. Gina plays high above the net, boasted Soboleski. We think she will contribute right away at middle hitter or outside hitter. She moves well and is very well trained.

Outside Hitters Soboleski figures to see a lot of competition at the outside hitter/ opposite positions. For starters, Samantha Kuehner saw considerable action as a sophomore, appearing in 137 games as an outside hitter/ defensive specialist. The 5 9 junior finished with 261 digs, third on the team, and 44 service aces. Sam s a two year starter who is a very focused and determined player, noted Soboleski. Danielle Martzolf is the other returnee. A 5 9 sophomore, she is a strong athlete who will compete for the O1 position. She saw limited action in 2007, appearing in 28 games with 20 kills and 16 digs. The recruiting class could make a huge impact. Freshman Ellie Lininger is considered on the leaders to play right away. The 5 11 out side hitter played at Fox Chapel (Pa.) High School. Noelle is an aggres sive player who is very athletic and a big blocker, related Soboleski. She will be a force at the net. Angela Groshner, a 5 8 freshman from nearby Maplewood (Pa.) High School, will compete for the O2 position, and could also be tried at libero. She helped lead the Tigers to the 2005 PIAA state championship, along with a runner up finish last year. She set school records for kills and service aces. Soboleski notes that Groshner possesses phenomenal ball control. She reads very well and moves well, Soboleski comment ed. She has great ball control. Another contender for immediate playing time is Bree McMahon, a transfer from Alfred State College. A 5 9 junior, McMahon was twice AVCA NJCAA Region III Player of the Year. She was accorded All American honors in 2007 and honorable mention All American acco lades as a freshman. Bree comes from a great high school program in Sweet Home, noted Soboleski. She s a tenacious player who is more of a defensive specialist but can swing. Freshman Justine Carrow will also compete for playing time as an opposite. Carrow is tall and thin at 6 1 , and is considered a big blocker. She played at Seneca Valley (Pa.) High School, and was a first team All Section and second team All WPIAL selection as a senior. She helped lead the Raiders to the Section 3 AAA championship. Ami Killinger will redshirt this season, and eventually vie for playing time at outside hitter or in the middle. She is a 5 10 freshman and played her high school volleyball at Exeter Township (Pa.) High School, where she earned All Berks County honors.

A concern a year ago prior to the season, the Fighting Scots now possess a pair of excellent setters with the addition of Megan Osysko. The 5 7 freshman from Independence(Oh.) High School could well afford the Fighting Scots the luxury of running a 6 2 set. Osysko was the District 2 Division III MVP and was also named the MVP of the Chagrin Valley Conference as a senior. We re looking to see what Megan can do, related Soboleski. We know she is a very solid setter who can set as well as provide us depth on defense. Maureen Tilert might only be 5 3 , but she proved a large pres ence as a freshman last season. She started at libero and finished with 538 digs, the fifth highest season total. That figure was also good for seventh in the PSAC in digs per game. Tilert also had 45 service aces. Mo is a ball of fire, Soboleski pointed out. She provides us with a great deal of energy. Tilert could well be pushed by Groshner, who provides the Fighting Scots with another player who excels in controlling the ball. Taryn Jeffers is yet another freshmen on the Edinboro roster. She is 5 6 and will look for time as a defensive specialist. Jeffers hails from Wooster (Oh.) High School, helping the Generals to two Ohio Final Four appearances. She was a second team All OCC choice.

Setters/Liberos A year ago Katie Wilkins came in as a true freshman and quickly took over as the starting setter. A position that traditionally has had outstanding performers in the past, Wilkins has a chance to rank up there with the best of the Edinboro setters. The 5 8 sophomore finished with a school record 1,769 assists, ranking second in the PSAC in assists per game and 25th nationally. She was also second on the team in service aces (60) and fourth in digs (246). Wilkins was named the PSAC West Rookie of the Year and was also a first team AVCA All Atlantic Region selection. Katie did a tremendous job running our offense as a freshman, stressed Soboleski. She s extremely competitive and has a great work ethic.

The Olivia Williams File She came in as a raw freshman with an unbe lievable ceiling. We didn t expect her to work her way into the lineup until midway through the season, but due to an injury she had to step in and play the right side. She did a great job. She is so quick and agile. Plus she has great natural jumping ability. Olivia makes it look so effortless. We look for her to get more points at the net hitting and blocking, and also behind the line with her jump serve. She will play either in the middle or on the right side. With Jenna Newman gone, Olivia will be that go to play er at the net.

Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference PSAC Overview

The Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference, with 57 years of organized compe tition, has evolved into one of the NCAA s largest and most heralded intercollegiate ath letic conferences. The 2008 09 academic year will be a ground breaking one for the PSAC, as the league will expand beyond its original 14 members for the first time since its official formation in 1951. New full time members Gannon University and Mercyhurst College, along with associate member Long Island University C.W. Post, expect to com plement the PSAC s already solid foundation. With 16 full time institutions, the PSAC shares distinction with the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference as the NCAA Division II s largest in terms of membership. League expansion has brought acclaim through postseason opportunities, as well. In 2008 09, the Conference will sponsor 23 championships, the most for leagues in Division II. Highly competitive on a regional and national level, PSAC schools annually combine to send nearly one third of its teams into NCAA postseason play. Ultimately, the membership s success has yielded 40 NCAA team and 218 indi vidual title winners. While proud of its athletic accomplish ments, the league also has evolved into one of Division II s finest from an academic stand point. Today, well over a quarter of the PSAC s estimated 5,300 participants are honored each year as Scholar Athletes for maintaining a grade point average of 3.25 or better a total that has nearly doubled since PSAC Scholar Athletes were first recognized in the mid 1990s. The PSAC was organized in 1951 for the pur pose of promoting and administering men s ath letic programs within the 14 state teachers col leges in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. In 1977, due to the interest and growth of women s athletics, the conference was restructured to pro vide for women s programs. Upon its formation, the league did not have a standard competitive division. However, in 1980, the league voted to reclassi fy the entire conference to NCAA Division II. Although all 16 current institutions are mem bers of Division II, eight schools also compete at the Division I level in select sports. PSAC schools enroll over 117,000 students and claim over 661,000 alumni, including 430,000 who reside in Pennsylvania. The PSAC is governed by the presidents of the 16 member institutions. It employs a commissioner, two assistant commissioners and a director of media relations at its head quarters in Lock Haven, Pa.

Radecki Inducted into Hall of Fame Stephanie Radecki ( 97) starred as a member of the Edinboro volleyball team from 1993 96, and was the 1997 Nancy Acker Award winner. In April 2008 she was one of ten individuals inducted into the Edinboro University Athletic Hall of Fame. Edinboro made two appearances in the Elite Eight in her four seasons, capturing the Atlantic Region title in 1994 and again in 1996. A native of Meadville, PA, she ranks among Edinboro s career leaders in a number of categories. She captured a number of honors during her career. She was a first team All PSAC West selection in 1995 and 1996. In 1996, she was voted the PSAC West Athlete of the Year after leading the Fighting scots to a 28 13 record. She also earned All Atlantic Region honors in 1995 and 96. After serving as an assistant coach at Edinboro for a sea son, she moved to North Alabama as a graduate assistant coach in 1998. That was the beginning of a very successful coaching career. Radecki spent one season as the head coach at St. Leo, and completed her fourth season as the head coach at North Alabama in the fall. During that period her teams have compiled a 115 30 record. She won Gulf Coast Conference championships in each of her first three seasons, along with guiding the Lions to the 2006 NCAA South Central Region title and a berth in the National Championship match. She was named the GSC East Division Coach of the Year and AVCA Regional Coach of the Year in 2005 and 2006.
