as high as fourth in the Northeast Region rankings during the year. In 2002 Edinboro fell one point shy of qualifying for postseason action, compiling a 9 5 4 record. Over the past several seasons the Fighting Scot roster has been extremely youthful, yet Kagiavas has molded that inexperience into win ning teams. The PSAC postseason awards bore that out two years ago, as Kagiavas was named the 2005 PSAC West Coach of the Year. It marked the second time he had received the award. Kagiavas' teams accomplished a rarity in his first six seasons, finishing with a better record each year. The 2001 Fighting Scots went out and posted an 11 5 1 record, including a school record six game winning streak. The Fighting Scots advanced to the PSAC Playoffs for the first time. Edinboro dropped a 1 0 decision to Bloomsburg in its first postseason venture, but that could not diminish a season which saw the Scots climb as high as 14th in the NSCAA Division II rankings. Along the way, the Scots defeated 13th ranked Slippery Rock, 3 0, while suffering four of its five losses to nationally ranked opponents. Kagiavas was recognized as the PSAC Women's Soccer Coach of the Year. Thanks to five wins in its final seven contests, Edinboro posted its first winning season in 2000, going 10 8 1. The Fighting Scots posted a four game win streak in which it held opponents score less for 500 minutes. The team also recorded the program's first win over local rival Gannon. The Fighting Scots weren't without their growing pains, as Edinboro's first ever women's soccer edition finished with a 2 14 0 record in 1996.

ary Kagiavas was appointed Edinboro University's first head coach of the Fighting Scot women's soccer program in August of 1996. The former Gannon University standout started the Edinboro pro gram that year, and since that time it has become one of the stronger teams in the Northeast Region. In his 12 seasons as head coach, Kagiavas has guided the Fighting Scots to a 103 100 18 record, including a 13 5 3 finish a year ago. That represent ed the most wins in school history, and the Fighting Scots capped it with their first ever postseason vic tory. Hosting Indiana(Pa.) in the first round of the PSAC Tournament, Edinboro handed the Crimson Hawks a 3 1 defeat. Slippery Rock bring Edinboro s season to a halt with a 2 0 victory in the semifinals. It marked the fourth time Edinboro had qualified for the PSAC Playoffs. In 2006, Kagiavas guided to a 10 7 0 record. Gary Kagiavas All told, the Fighting Scots have won ten or more Year W L T Pct. matches five times during 1996 2 14 0 .125 Kagiavas tenure. Head Coach The ledger improved slightly in 1997, as Kagiavas' second team posted a 5 10 1 finish. The Fighting Scots improved to 9 10 0 in 1998. That included a 2 1 overtime win over West Virginia Wesleyan, an out fit ranked second in Division II at the time. In 1999 the Fighting Scots posted a 9 9 1finish to earn their first non losing season. Edinboro debuted in the regional rankings during the season, a first for Kagiavas's squad. Included in the victories was another triumph over a nationally ranked foe, as the Fighting Scots posted a 2 1 win at 14th ranked Slippery Rock. Edinboro saw a run of five straight winning seasons come to an end three years ago following a 6 9 3finish, and his Fighting Scots suffered a sec ond straight losing campaign in 2005, finishing at 7 9 3. However, thanks to a 5 3 2 ledger in the PSAC West, Edinboro made its third ever appearance in the PSAC Playoffs. Kagiavas brought a wealth of coaching expe rience to Edinboro, both locally and at the interna tional level. He joined the Edinboro staff after serv ing as assistant manager of the Family First Sports Park in Erie for two years. At Family First, he was responsible for organizing all phases of the facility's indoor and outdoor soccer leagues. Kagiavas has served as the coaching director of the Edinboro Regional Soccer Club. Under his direction, the organization has grown from four to 14 teams. In the 1997 98 season, he took the 15 under team to the state finals. In recent years he has taken the Erie Admirals U17 Girls team to the state championship and to the Final Four of Region 1. The team has finished in the top 16 in the coun try in their age group. He is the girls coaching direc tor at the Erie Admirals. In 2004 Kagiavas had two more state champions with the Erie Admirals in the Under 17 and Under 18 girls teams. That marked four state champions in four years. Kagiavas was a standout defender at Gannon from 1987 91, and played professionally in his native South Africa, along with Greece and Canada, after earning his bachelor's degree in 1991. He has held a variety of coaching positions in many levels of com petition since 1989, highlighted by a successful stint as a professional coach in South Africa. At Gannon, Kagiavas was a four year starter at midfield and defender for a Golden Knight team which advanced to the NCAA Division II Final Four in 1989 and 1990. Gannon was 58 14 8 during his four seasons, with three NCAA playoff appearances. Kagiavas played professionally for a St. Catherines team that won the Canadian Cup in the National Soccer League. He was a player/coach for

Edinboro Women’ s Soccer 2008 Women’s

the Springs Old Boys and Boksburg 'Two for Joy,' as well as for the Eastern Transvaal all select indoor team. In 1994, Kagiavas served as the head coach of Gannon's men's junior varsity soccer program, also assisting with the varsity squad as the Golden Knight men posted a 15 2 0 record and advanced to the NCAA Final Four. Kagiavas began his coaching career with the Erie Strikers while also directing the Villa Maria Elementary School team. In the spring of 1992, Kagiavas was assistant coach of the Boksburg "Two for Joy" Division I team that competed in the National Soccer League of South Africa. In the sum mer of 1991, he was the head coach of the Springs (South Africa) Old Boys of the Division II men's semi professional league, earning Coach of the Year honors. Kagiavas has earned a South African coaching license, a professional referee license, and his United States Soccer Federation National B License and has his NSCAA Regional Coaching License. He has become heavily involved in the administrative side of the sport. He serves as the Northeast Regional chair for the NSCAA, and is also the PSAC chair for womens soccer and a member of the NCAA Division II East Region committee. He and his wife, Dawn, a native of St. Marys, Pa., reside in Fairview with their eleven year old daughter, Kaylee.

fter conclud ing a brilliant career at Edinboro University with a record breaking season as a senior in 2004, Jamie Tekotte is in her third season as an assistant coach for the Fighting

Scots. As a senior, Tekotte set school records for goals scored (21) and points (48) in a season. She was a first team All Northeast Region and All PSAC selection. In addition, she ranked sec ond in the PSAC in points, points per game, goals, and goals per game, and was 13th in Division II in goals per game and 15th in points per game. Tekotte concluded her career ranked first in goals scored (37) and second in career points (85) despite playing just three seasons for the Fighting Scots. 2008 Season Preview Strong Defense will Have to Overcome Unknown Scoring Options in 2008

E dinboro University women s soccer coach Gary Kagiavas can cite a couple of imposing obsta cles standing in the way of his team in 2008. One is a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference which added two well funded teams to an already very competitive league, with both competing in the Western Division, no less. The other is the loss of all three forwards, and five of the team s six lead ing scorers. Call the PSAC West the wild, wild west. Two teams enter the season ranked in the NSCAA Division II Preseason Top 25. Slippery Rock is ranked 17th after finishing with a 17 5 1 record and reaching the PSAC title match. That came thanks to a 2 0 win over the Fighting Scots in the PSAC semifinals. Then there s Mercyhurst, another NCAA Playoff team who is ranked 21st after going 15 4 3 a year ago while playing in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. Throw in Indiana(Pa.), 12 8 0 a year ago, and

Senior defender Ashley Jones is considered the best player in the PSAC by head coach Gary Kagiavas.

Edinboro Women’ s Soccer 2008 Women’s

an improving Gannon squad, another GLIAC mem ber a year ago, plus always tough Lock Haven, and it s easy to see why Kagiavas feels the PSAC is as strong as any conference in Division II. The Eastern Division is also strong, with West Chester, the 2007 PSAC champion, ranked seventh. The West is incredibly difficult, stressed Kagiavas, who started the Edinboro program in 1996. I think the West is going to be brutal. Mercyhurst is a nationally ranked program and Gannon is one of the best funded programs. We ve added two teams who will compete right away. Add in Slippery Rock, IUP, Lock Haven and us and that s a strong conference. Cal is really funding its program now, and Clarion is always hard to beat. The East isn t much easier, but at least they didn t add new teams. Kagiavas also noted that the Atlantic Region will have a new look, with the region now com prised of the PSAC and the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. He views that as a plus compared to previously having the New York Collegiate Athletic Conference, which fea tured some very strong women s programs. Now getting back to the loss of most of the team s leading scorers. This isn t the first time Kagiavas has faced this scenario, but it may be the most dire situation he s faced. All three forwards from last year Angie de Almeida, Ashley Pulman, and Ashley Rucker are gone. de Almeida and Pulman accounted for All PSAC West first team honors six times, and both were so honored a year ago. de Almeida finished as Edinboro s leading scorer with 9 goals and 7 assists for 25 points, and departs as the fourth all time leading scorer. Pulman, despite a career filled with injuries, ranks sixth in career scoring after finishing with 6 goals and 4 assists a year ago. Throw in the loss of Kara Ciacchini, a second team All PSAC West performer who enjoyed an outstanding senior campaign from her midfield position, and it s easy to see why Kagiavas is great ly concerned with his team s ability to score goals. Yet Kagiavas enters the 2008 campaign with high hopes, despite a great deal of uncertainty up front. He guided the Fighting Scots to a 13 5 3 record a year ago, the most wins in school history. In the process Edinboro qualified for the PSAC Playoffs for the third time, and picked up its first postseason win ever. The 3 1 win over IUP in the quaterfinals also represented Edinboro s first ever

2008 Season Preview home playoff contest. At the end of the year Kagiavas was recognized as the PSAC West Coach of the Year. Much of last year s success had to do with a stingy defense, and that s what has Kagiavas encouraged heading into this season. The Fighting Scots posted seven shutouts and held 15 oppo nents to one goal or less. The core of the defense, plus both goalkeepers, returns intact. Leading the way is All American candidate Ashley Jones, a three time All PSAC West selection from her sweeperback position. Defensively we re pretty sound, Kagiavas slyly stated. We ll definitely be strong defensive ly. I think it will be difficult for teams to score on us due to our defensive speed. However, I don s see us beating teams 4 0 or 5 0. I think you ll see a lot of one goal games. That might be particularly true early in the year, as Kagiavas must incorporate a host of new comers into a cohesive unit. Given that we have two weeks of presea son, trying to coordinate everything in the attack won t be easy, commented Kagiavas.

Here s a look at the 2008 Fighting Scots, posi tion by position:

Forwards With last year s complement of forwards gone, Kagiavas will look at no less than six players, and as he puts it, we should get one or two play ers who can score for us . The lone player with any playing experience at Edinboro is Elise Falatach. The senior has previ ously played in the midfield or on defense She returned last season after suffering a season end ing knee injury in the first game of 2006. She played in all 21 matches, with 11 starts, contributing a pair of assists. Falatach was a second team All PSAC West selection in 2005. The big hope lies with Rachel Dahlstrand, a former standout at nearby McDowell High School who was at West Virginia for two seasons before transferring this year to Edinboro. Kagiavas notes that the former All State performer has proven scoring ability and plenty of speed. Now she must learn his system and fight off the rust after red shirting in 2007 and playing in just three matches a two years ago. C.J. Allen is another transfer to keep an eye on. She played at Wheeling Jesuit a year ago, fin ishing as the fourth leading scorer for the cardinals with 6 goals and 3 assists for 15 points as a fresh man. Four freshmen will also vie for playing time. Amber McLaughlin hails from Burrell(Pa.) High School, where she was a two time All Section selection. Melanie Prelec and Amanda Kyc were four year starters at Slippery Rock Area(Pa.) High School and Sayre Area(Pa.) High School, respec tively. Shanea Raabe is also from Slippery Rock, but she missed most of her senior year due to a knee injury suffered in the third game.

Midfielders

Heather Weismiller emerged as a scoring threat in 2007 with 6 goals and 3 assists.

Edinboro Women’ s Soccer 2008 Women’s

Ciacchini will definitely be missed, but there is still plenty of talent returning, including starters Maria Dembrow and Heather Weismiller, a pair of juniors. Dembrow looks to rebound from a frus trating sophomore campaign. After finishing as the team s second leading scorer with 5 goals and 7 assists for 17 points as a freshman, Dembrow managed just 3 goals and a pair of assists in 2007. Weismiller, however, stepped up after scor ing just one goal in her freshman season. With four goals in the finals seven matches, she fin ished as the third leading scorer with 6 goals and 3 assists for 15 points. Lauren Christy, Leah Thomas, Jessica Rexroat

Page 6

Edinboro Women’ s Soccer 2008 Women’s

2008 Seazson Preview and Brittany Bidak have all seen plenty of previous action. Christy has started 18 matches in her first two seasons, most of that as a freshman defend er. A year she had four starts. Seniors Rexroat and Thomas have proven valuable in reserve roles. Rexroat appeared in 18 matches, with a pair of starts, in 2007, finishing with 2 goals and an assist. Thomas played in 14 contests. Bidak was part of a large group of freshmen to see extended playing time in 2007. The sopho more finished with a pair of goals while playing in 18 matches. Lindsay McNell and Emily Dickson saw little action last year as freshmen, but look for a bigger role. Kagiavas admits that the returnees have the advantage of experience, but feels that a number of first year players will push to get on the field. He singled out Jessica Morgan and Taylor Stetka as newcomers the veterans better keep an eye on. Morgan helped South Park(Pa.) High School to the PIAA Class AA Co State Championship as a senior, along with WPIAL titles as a junior and senior. Stetka hails from Atholton(Md.) High School, where she was a three year starter. No fewer than four other first year Fighting Scots also figure in the mix. Trina Brozewicz is actually a redshirt freshman who attended West Virginia a year ago but did not play for the Mountaineers. She was a first team All State selection as a senior at nearby Fairview High School, the same program that produced Ashley Jones. Kailynn Noon is another local product. The former Meadville High School standout scored 23 goals and had 17 assists as a junior, and was named the Meadville Tribune Player of the Year. She missed 12 matches with an injury last year but still scored 8 goals. Alexis Dolde was a late addition to the roster who was a four year starter at Connellsbille(Pa.) High School. One other player Kagiavas would love to see competing for playing time is Emily Leone. She enjoyed an outstanding freshman season in 2006, but missed the 2007 campaign due to ACL surgery, then suffered another season ending knee injury this spring.

Defenders While newcomers figure to play a key role at several positions, they ll have a tough time earning time on defense. The Fighting Scots return every one, including starters Ashley Jones, Ashley Young

Edinboro Women’ s Soccer 2008 Women’s

and Devyn Agett. Jones just may be the top player in the PSAC, at least as far as Kagiavas is concerned. She s the anchor, boasted Kagiavas. I don t think there is a better player than Ashley Jones. She s an excep tional player, a 4.0 student, and a leader. She hates losing, and best of all, she s a nice person to top it off. Jones earned first team All PSAC West hon ors for the third straight season, and was also an All NSCAA Northeast Region selection for the sec ond straight year. The senior had a goal and 5 assists last year, but her true value lies in her ability to control the game from the defensive end of the field. She has started all 57 matches in her career. Young started 19 matches last year. She has plenty of speed and is also a member of the track & field team. Devyn Agett started 19 matches as a fresh man and proved to be a hard nosed performer. Another sophomore, Shannon Seiler, moves from the midfield to defense this year after playing in eight matches in 2007. Nichole Rolik is another sophomore seeking more playing time at defender. She played in three matches in 2007. Kagiavas feels freshman Jamie Warren is good enough to compete immediately. She earned All State honors while playing at Norwin(Pa.) High School.

Goalkeepers Lisa Bartolowits and Samantha Cairns shared the goalkeeping duties a year ago, and will likely do so again this year. Bartolowits, a senior, was 7 1 1 with 4 shutouts and a 0.94 goals against aver age. She ranked fourth in the PSAC in goals against average. She ranks fifth in career wins at Edinboro (15), and is fourth in shutouts with nine. Cairns is a junior who was 6 4 2 with 3 shutouts and a 1.22 goals against average. She is a very talented keeper who hasn t always played up to her talent. Freshman Katie Stukbauer has a bright future. She allowed just six goals in two seasons as the starting goalkeeper at Medina(OH) High School. Kagiavas feels she will be a phenomenal goalie in time. Between the three we have three very good goalkeepers, Kagiavas pointed out. Right now it s Lisa, but who knows by game one. She s motivated to be in goal. I think we re really in good hands.
