Head Coach

Chris Rhodes 9th Year Edinboro ‘95

F

ormer Edinboro All­American Chris Rhodes was appointed the head swimming coach at his alma mater in October of 2001.

He competed for Edinboro from 1991­95, earning All­American honors in 1993­94 and 1994­95 as a member of freestyle relay teams.

He also earned All­PSAC honors and set a school record as a member of the 200 freestyle relay team. That relay team finished second at the NCAA Division II National Championships and set a conference record that stood for six years.

A key part of legendary teams while a swimmer at Edinboro, Rhodes’ goal since tak­ ing over has been simple yet ambitious ­­ to return the Fighting Scots to a prominent spot in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference.

Rhodes has spent his first seven years building the foundation, and he has begun to see some of the fruits of his efforts the last few years.

A number of young swimmers have qualified for the PSAC Championships, and Brooke Heath concluded a brilliant career as an 11­time All­American. She earned All­ American honors in the 100 and 200­yard breaststroke events at Nationals as a fresh­ man, then in both events plus the 200­yard IM as a sophomore. That performance helped the women’s swimming team finish 19th at

Nationals. She repeated as an All­American in all three events as the Fighting Scots finished 20th at Nationals in 2007 and 19th in 2008.

The women were bolstered by distance freestyler Marie Nedley, who came on to win the PSAC Championship in both the 1,000 and 1,650­yard freestyle. She then earned honor­ able mention All­American honors in the 1,650.

As a team the women finished with a 12­1 record, the best in school history, and finished fourth at the PSAC Championship.

The men’s team, meanwhile, came in fifth at the PSAC Champiosnship. Rhodes was recognized as the PSAC Women’s Coach of the Year in 2007, and this past year was hon­ ored as Edinboro’s Coach of the Year.

A year ago the women finished 11­2 and were sixth at the PSAC’s. The men were 4­7 and seventh respectively, but Max Niggel was named the PSAC Freshman of the Year.

Academics has also been a major part of Rhodes’ agenda. His women’s teams have earned All­Academic honors every semester but one, and the men’s team has earned simi­ lar honors.

Rhodes began his coaching career as an assistant swimming coach at Titusville High School in 1996­97, then moved on to Ashland University, one of the top programs on the Division II level, as an assistant swimming coach while completing work on his master's degree in Reading, which he received in August 1999. He coached a two­time national champion while at Ashland.

Rhodes returned to western Pennsylvania as the assistant swimming coach at Oil City Area High School for the 1999­2000 season. He has also served as the head coach of the Stroke Development Camp at Westminster College. In addition, he has been a Reading Specialist in the Oil City Area School District.

Rhodes graduated from Edinboro in December 1995 with a bachelor's degree in Elementary Education and Early Childhood Education. He and his wife Stephanie reside in Edinboro, along with their sons, Greysen (3), and Griffin, born March 31, 2009. He is a mem­ ber of the College Swim Coaches Association of America and the American Swimming Coaches Association.

Women’s Preview The women’s swimming program

found out a year ago that there was life after Brooke Heath. Edinboro’s most accomplished swimmer, Heath helped the Scots finish 12­1 her senior year, a school record for wins, along with a fourth place finish at the PSAC Championships and 18th at the NCAA Division Championships.

“I knew this day would eventually come and I can’t help but think of ‘Remember the Titans’ when they lose there top linebacker, you cannot replace a Brooke Heath,” related Rhodes prior to the start of last season.

Well, just as in the movie, Rhodes found that others would step and fill in. It helped that the former Edinboro All­American has put together several strong recruiting classes that are starting to pay dividends.

When it was all said and done, the women’s swimming team posted an 11­2 record and finished sixth at the PSAC Championships.

Marie Nedley earned a trip to Nationals for the second straight year, and she was joined by the 200­yard freestyle relay team of Desiree’ Thomas, Hannah Rankin, Lauren Knupp and Rebecca Stum.

Rhodes noted that marked the first time a 200­yard freestyle relay team has advanced to the national championships since he was part of the men’s team and earned All­ American honors in 1994­95.

Here’s Rhodes’ assessment of the upcoming season: FREESTYLE – Swimming the sprint free events are Lauren Knupp, Hannah Rankin, Desiree Thomas, and newcomer Mallory Waldinger. We are looking to make a repeat showing at the NCAA championships.

Swimming mid distance free will be Sam Sustrich, Leanne Fuller, and Megan Kaulius.

Distance free will be Marie Nedley and fresh­ man Kayla Joy. Marie is the school record holder in the 500, 1000, and 1650 free and should make a good showing at Nationals.

BACKSTROKE – This will be a strong event for us. Katie Close returns as the top backstro­ ker. Maddie Hedstrom, Karie Sheahan, Kori Hamilton, Rankin, Thomas, and newcomer Sara Kuhn will compete here.

BREASTSTROKE –Kate Marschner will head up these events. Newcomers Alsiha LaRosa and Colleen Sheldon will have a big impact as well.

BUTTERFLY – Katie Close again will be counted here, as well as Maddie Hedstrom, who placed eighth at last years PSAC meet.

IM­ Chelsea Grosser returns as the top per­ former. Alisha LaRosa, Katie Joy, and Sara Kuhn will also be counted on.

Men’s Preview The Edinboro University men’s team

continues to grow, not just in quantity, but also quality. Two year’s ago the Fighting Scots finished fifth out of seven teams at the PSAC Championships. A year ago the Fighting Scots came in seventh out of eight teams but Rhodes was extremely pleased with the progress the men made.

What made last year’s performance even more impressive was the youth of the team. “This is the largest men’s team, with only three seniors, so youth will play an important role again,” related Rhodes last year.

Typifying the youth was max Niggel, who was named the PSAC Men’s Swimming Freshman of the Year. Niggel enjoyed an outstanding freshman campaign capped by a stellar performance at the PSAC Championships.

While emerging as one of the top dis­ tance swimmers in the conference, he earned All­PSAC honors in the 1650­yard freestyle thanks to a third place finish with a time of 16:09.46. He added a fourth place finish in the 1000­yard freestyle with a school­record time of 9:33.10.

Both of those times were NCAA “B” cuts. He had four “B” cut times at the

PSAC’s. He captured All­PSAC honors in the 200­yard backstroke with a second place fin­ ish (1:52.62) Here’s Rhodes’ assessment for each event: FREESTYLE ­­ Swimming the sprint events are Max Nabutovsky, Jeff Schleicher, and Grahahm Clouser. Swimming mid distance free are Dave Fico and Ryan Sestak. The dis­ tance will be a strong event for us with Max Niggel, Drew Sapp, Mark Barron, and Ben Frable competing.

BACKSTROKE ­­ Max Niggel will be counted on here as well as Rodman Walker.

BREASTSTROKE ­­ Derek Sapp returns as the top performer. Tom Mechling will also be counted on.
