M

issy Soboleski was hired as head volleyball coach at Edinboro University on February 3, 2005. Soboleski replaced Dale Flickinger, who was hired on an interim basis in late July to replace Lynn Theehs, who went to the University of Maine. After a slow start, Soboleski returned the Fighting Scots to the ranks of the elite in the Atlantic Region in her first season. Edinboro finished its first year under Soboleski’s tutelage with a 2616 ledger, and was selected for the NCAA Division II Playoffs. The 26 wins were particularly impressive since the Fighting Scots were struggling at 712 entering the final weekend in September. They would go on to win 17 of their final 19 regular season matches to qualify for the PSAC Tournament with a third place finish in the Western Division. With a fourgame win over Millersville in the quarterfinals, Edinboro reached the semifinals before falling in three games to Lock Haven. The same fate held true in the Atlantic Regional, as the Fighting Scots defeated Mount Olive in three games in the quar terfinals, but then lost in three games to Lees McRae in the semifinals. The Fighting Scots weren’t as fortunate in

the 2006 campaign, as a young squad lost five of its last six matches to finish at 1917. Two of those loss es came in five games. 2007 saw the Fighting Scots finish with a 2811 record, the most wins since the 1998 edition also won 28 matches. Edinboro enjoyed a successful play off run, reaching the PSAC Tournament semifinals, then falling in the finals of the Atlantic Regional Championship. A young 2008 squad devoid of any seniors post ed a 269 record, finishing second in the PSAC West and qualifying for the Atlantic Regional for the third time in four years. Soboleski’s ability to mold a team without any seniors and with four freshmen playing key roles did not go unnoticed. She was selected the AVCA Atlantic Region Coach of the Year. Soboleski is wellknown in local volleyball circles. She has previously coached at two local institutions, Mercyhurst and Gannon. She took over the Edinboro program after serving as the head coach at Mercyhurst from 19992004. At Mercyhurst, she inherited a volleyball program that had not had a winning season since 1993, had won only five games in four years in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC), and had recorded just 26 wins in five previous seasons. She proceeded to lead the Lady Lakers to three winning seasons in six years at the helm, including a 218 finish in 2002, winning the Southern Division championship. The 2001 team went 1916, and her 2003 team was 16 15. Prior to taking over at Mercyhurst, Soboleski spent four seasons as the head coach at her alma mater, Gannon, where she was previously a standout player. Her 199598 Lady Knight editions reached the GLIAC Playoffs twice, including a 2114 record in her first season, with Gannon reaching the NCAA Division II Playoffs. Soboleski's final team was 1816 and qual ified for the GLIAC Playoffs. She was an assistant coach under Gerry (Burbules) Vensel, a member of the Edinboro Athletic Hall of Fame, in 1994. Head Coach Edinboro University volleyball in the forefront of the PSAC and the region," related Director of Athletics Bruce Baumgartner. "We think coach Soboleski has what it takes to continue Edinboro University's win ning tradition. We feel our program is in very good hands. Missy brings a great deal of energy and experience to our program, and she is very familiar with what Edinboro volleyball represents. We also like the fact that she enjoyed an excellent graduation rate at Mercyhurst.” A native of Rootstown, Ohio, Soboleski graduated from Gannon in 1993 with a bachelor's degree in Education and a minor in Sports Management and Health & Physical Education. A fouryear letterwinner for the Lady Knights from 1990 to 1993, Gannon was 11622 during that period. That included three straight trips to the Elite Eight to conclude her playing career.

Soboleski enjoyed a distinguished career as a player, serving as a co captain in 1993. The outside hitter earned a spot on the Hamot Classic AllTournament team as a senior, then capped her career by earning All Tournament accolades in the NCAA Division II Atlantic Regional. She totaled 14 kills and 16 digs in the regional final win over Slippery Rock, propelling Gannon to its third straight trip to the Elite Eight. Soboleski and her husband, Mark, reside in Edinboro with their three children Madison (9) and twins Braeden and Abigale (6). While at Gannon she also served as the SWA/Assistant Athletic Director. Mark is a teacher in the Millcreek School District and serves as the head foot ball coach at McDowell High School.

immy Chan is in his first sea son as the assistant coach after being hired this past July. Chan has 15 years of experi ence as a volleyball coach at vari ous levels, including a fiveyear stint as the head coach of the St. John Fisher volleyball team. He posted a 6585 record from 2002 06. His 2005 edition finished with a 1615 record. The Cardinals fin ished third in the Empire 8 Conference regular season then reached the Empire 8

Tournament semifinals. Chan was recognized as the Empire 8 Coach of the Year. He also guided the Cardinals to 16 wins in 2002, 2003 and 2004. “We are extremely excited to have Jimmy join the volleyball pro gram,” related Soboleski. “He brings a wealth of volleyball knowledge and experience that will help us tremendously on the court as well as recruiting.” Chan served as a math teacher at Canandaigua Academy in Canandaigua, NY, since 2000. He has also been heavily involved in coaching club teams, including the Niagara Frontier Volleyball Club from 200709. Chan is a graduate of Brockport State, where he earned his bache lor’s degree in Mathematics with a certification in Secondary Education in 2000. He completed work on his master’s degree in Mathematic Education in 2007 from Brockport State.

2009 Season Preview Since Missy Soboleski took over as Edinboro’s volleyball coach in 2005 the Fighting Scots have won at least 26 matches three of the four years, including a 269 record a year ago. They’ve qualified for the NCAA Division II Atlantic Region Playoffs those three seasons, as well. Now Soboleski would like to see her team take the next step and make its first Elite Eight appearance since 2002. The Fighting Scots must replace five players from last year’s squad which lost to Slippery Rock in the quarterfinals of the Atlantic Regional. Soboleski sees depth as the key to success in 2009. The nine returning players and five newcomers all have the ability to contribute, although she also views the team’s depth as a concern. “With our new additions we’re not sure what our lineup will look like,” related Soboleski. “We have many options so we have some major decisions to make in the preseason.” But Soboleski can’t help but get excited about the talent on the team. “We’ve added muchneeded depth in the middle and the outside positions,” she stressed. “All of our athletes will be potential contribu tors. It’s unusual to have all 14 as contenders for playing time.” “We lost five players from last year’s roster,” Soboleski pointed out. “Katie Wilkins is the only loss from the starting lineup. Megan Osysko and Vivian Pritz will run the show for us. Both are very capable of running the 51 or 62. I’m looking forward to working with them both.” The good news is that last year’s top five hitters return, paced by Olivia Williams. “We will look to run a similar offense looking to Olivia Williams in the middle to take that leadership role and score points for us,” commented Soboleski. “We also have Brittany Slauterbeck who will compete in the middle or on opposite. We look for her and Gina Boothe to step up and also make an impact offensive ly.” Williams, a senior who earned first team AllPSAC West and All Atlantic Region accolades, will be Edinboro’s first hit ting option. She finished with a teamhigh 369 kills a year ago and ranks sixth in career kills (1,144). Throw in a talented sopho mores Ellie Lininger and Angela Groshner, senior Samantha Kuehner and jun ior transfer Beyaca Martin and the Fighting Scots should have plenty of options up front. Maureen Olivia Williams Tilert will add

Page 4

defense and plenty of leadership, not to mention endless energy. Kuehner and Groshner are also defensive stalwarts. “Mo is our spark plug and we will look for leadership on the floor from her – controlling the ball in particular,” Soboleski stated. Speaking of leadership, the Fighting Scots should benefit from the experience and leadership of seniors Kuehner, Slauterbeck and Williams. A year ago Edinboro did not have a senior on the roster. “We had a great spring led by our three seniors,” Soboleski pointed out. “They are all hard workers on and off the court and lead by example. We are very lucky to have them.” An added year of experience should do wonders for sophomores Boothe, Osysko, Groshner and Lininger, all who played key roles as true freshmen. “Soboleski “With our new additions looks for bigger and bet ter things from them this we’re not sure what our line year. up will look like. We have “You always worry about onehit wonders,” many options so we have she admitted, “but hope some major decisions to fully that year of major make in the preseason.” playing time and in key positions helped them mature. They were Head coach Missy Soboleski exposed to pressure at a top level, so whatever they face this year won’t rattle them.” Soboleski hopes that the combination of the upperclassmen, a strong sophomore class, and a promising group of recruits will lead to postseason action in 2009. Martin leads the recruits. A 5’8 outside hit ter/opposite, she is described as a dynamic hitter with great leaping abil ity. She saw plenty of action at North Alabama, coached by former Edinboro standout Stephanie Radecki. Pritz could play setter and help run the offense or compete as an attacker on the right side. Finally, Kristen Fritz is a local product from General McLane High School who will add depth to the opposite position. The 2009 schedule is highlighted by a trip to the Central Missouri Tournament, where the Fighting Scots will face an outstanding field. Central Missouri was 2910 a year ago, while Emporia State was 344 and reached the South Central Regional championship match, and Pittsburg State finished with a 287 ledger. Emporia State finished fifth in the final AVCA Division II Top 25, Central Missouri was 11th, and Pittsburg State 16th. “The Central Missouri Tournament is great in preparation for con ference play starting out,” noted Soboleski. “We’ll face teams ranked in the top 25. If we compete well there then we know we can compete in the conference.” It all gets underway for the Fighting Scots on Friday, August 28 and Saturday, August 29 as Edinboro competes in the Fairmont State Tournament.

Middle Hitters A year ago this position was a question mark due to the loss of All American Jenna Newman. But as the Fighting Scots enter the 2009 campaign, middle hitter is a strength. For starters there’s Olivia Williams, who stepped up a year ago to become one of the best players in the PSAC. The 5’8” senior earned first team AllPSAC West honors and was an AVCA AllAtlantic Region choice after leading Edinboro with 369 kills and a .321 hitting percentage, the latter good for seventh in the PSAC. She ranked eighth in the conference in kills per game. She enters his final season ranking sixth in career kills with 1,144, along with eighth in total blocks (263). Williams also led the team in total blocks with 92 and was second in service aces with 49.

2009 Season Preview Olivia is our “goto” hitter,” exclaimed Soboleski. “We will look for her to score. She’s a very athletic player capable of being one of the best athletes in the PSAC.” Brittany Slauterbeck is a 5’10” senior who enters her fourth year as a starter for the Fighting Scots. A year ago totaled 238 kills and 87 blocks, the latter figure good for second on the team. She ranks eighth in career total blocks with 255. “Brittany is a great blocker who has a great instinct for blocking middles. We look for her to score more this year,” related Soboleski.

Outside Hitters Soboleski already had a solid trio of outside hitters returning in sen ior Sam Kuehner and sophomores Ellie Lininger and Angela Groshner. She then went out and added transfer Beyaca Martin from North Alabama. Kuehner is a seasoned player who will compete for the O2 posi tion and could also see time at libero. “Sam possesses great ball control and is one of the most determined athletes we have,” Soboleski point ed out. A year ago she finished with 83 digs and 49 kills while playing in 50 games. Lininger and Groshner were part of an outstanding recruiting class that played a key role in the Fighting Scots’ success. Lininger is 5’11” and can be a dynamic hitter. “Ellie did a great job for us as a freshman in the O1 position,” exclaimed Soboleski. “We’ll look for her to score more this year.” As a freshman Lininger finished second on the team in kills (326) and digs (333), adding 41 total blocks and 20 service aces. Like Kuehner, Groshner is more of a defensive specialist but has the ability to contribute to the attack. She is 5’8” and starred at nearby Maplewood High School. Groshner contributed 146 kills ahile ranking third on the team in digs with 234, adding 30 service aces while playing in 95 games. “Angela was our O2 last year for most of the season,” Soboleski pointed out. “She has a great feel for the game and reads well on defense.” Martin will compete with Lininger for the O1 position and could also see time at opposite. “Beyaca can score and we will look for her to do just that ,” stated Soboleski. “She has great leaping ability.” A year ago while playing at North Alabama the 5’8” junior appeared in 126 games for the Lions, totaling 243 kills, fourth on the team. She added 55 blocks and 55 digs. As a freshman in 2007 she was third on the team with 226 kills.

Setters/Liberos On many teams the loss of Katie Wilkins, the 2007 PSAC Rookie of the Year, would be devastating. But Megan Osysko proved as a true freshman that she has the ability to fall in line with some of the top set ters at Edinboro. The 5’7” sophomore ended the year with a team high 776 assists while sharing time with Wilkins. She added a teamhigh 50 service aces and was fourth in digs with 226. “Megan ended the season as our top setter,” stressed Soboleski. “She possesses great ball control. She will be on the court in some capacity, either running the offense or playing defense. Megan is very composed on the court. You will never see her rattled. She has a very calming presence that helped us tremendously last year.” Vivian Pritz, a freshman from Joilet, Illinois has the ability to add depth at several positions. “Most important will be at the setter posi tion,” Soboleski commented. “She has great hands and instinct for a setter. She also has good ball control and the ability to play on the right side. We’ll look for her to be on the court in some capacity.” Fiery Maureen Tilert returns at libero. A diminutive 5’3” junior, Tilert is the heart and soul of the team, with outstanding energy and leadership qualities. A year ago finished with a teamhigh 570 digs, adding 37 service aces. “Mo will lead the way,” admitted Soboleski. “She will give us lots of energy on the court and has great ball control.” Kuehner and Groshner could also see time at libero.

Opposites Gina Boothe was named the PSAC Rookie of the Year and also earned a spot on the AVCA AllAtlantic Region team last season. The 6’1” sophomore finished with 281 kills, good for third on the team, along with a .256 hitting percentage. She added 44 blocks. “Gina scored for us! She does a great job on the right side hitting and blocking,” exclaimed Soboleski. “She has a very high ceiling and could be one of the top players in the PSAC.” Danielle Martzolf, a 5’9” junior, and freshman Kristen Fritz will also compete at opposite. Martzolf appeared in 76 games a year ago, finish ing with 56 kills. “Dani got considerable playing time last year on the right side,” Soboleski stated. “She is a strong athlete with a lot of potential, and is a very hard worker.” Fritz is 5’9” and played at nearby General McLane High School, helping the Lancers to the District 10 championship. “Kristen adds muchneeded depth to the right side,” noted Soboleski. “We’re looking forward to working with her.”

Coach Soboleski Comments: “Vivian adds some depth for us in a few positions, most notably at the setting spot. She has great hands and instincts for a setter. She also has good ball control and has the ability to hit on the right side. We’ll look for her to be on the court in some capacity.”

Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference } PSAC Overview

Originating in 1951 to administer and pro mote men’s athletics, the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference has evolved into one of the NCAA’s most heralded intercollegiate con ferences. The first major step came in 1977, when based on a growing interest, the league reor ganized to provide a structure for its women’s programs. Only three years later, lacking a standard competitive division, league voted to reclassify the entire conference to NCAA Division II. The most recent enhancement came during the 200809 academic year when the PSAC expanded for the first time in its rich his tory, adding fulltime members Gannon University and Mercyhurst College, and associ ate member Long Island UniversityC.W. Post. The membership now consists of 16 fulltime institutions and the one associate. All of the league’s fulltime members are located within the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, which makes the PSAC the largest onestate conference in the NCAA. The league has also grown to share the distinc tions as: The largest conference in Division II, the largest footballplaying conference in the NCAA, and, with 23, the conference that spon sors the most championships at the Division II level. Highly competitive on a regional and national level, PSAC schools annually combine to send nearly onethird of its teams into NCAA postseason play. Ultimately, the mem bership’s success has yielded 42 NCAA team and 228 individual title winners. While proud of its athletic accomplish ments, the league also has evolved into one of Division II’s finest from an academic stand point. Today, nearly onethird of the PSAC’s estimated 6,200 participants are honored each year as “ScholarAthletes” for maintain ing a gradepoint average of 3.25 or better a total that has nearly doubled since PSAC ScholarAthletes were first recognized in the mid1990s. Although all 16 current institutions are members of Division II, eight league schools also compete at the Division I level in select sports. PSAC schools enroll over 118,000 stu dents and claim over 670,000 alumni, includ ing 430,000 who reside in Pennsylvania. The PSAC is governed by the presidents of the 16 member institutions. It employs a commissioner, two assistant commissioners and a director of media relations at its head quarters in Lock Haven, Pa.

Radecki Inducted into Hall of Fame Stephanie Radecki (‘97) starred as a member of the Edinboro volleyball team from 199396, and was the 1997 Nancy Acker Award winner. In April 2008 she was one of ten individuals inducted into the Edinboro University Athletic Hall of Fame. Edinboro made two appear ances in the Elite Eight in her four seasons, capturing the Atlantic Region title in 1994 and again in 1996. A native of Meadville, PA, she ranks among Edinboro’s career leaders in a number of categories. She captured a number of honors during her career. She was a first team AllPSAC West selection in 1995 and 1996. In 1996, she was voted the PSAC West Athlete of the Year after leading the Fighting scots to a 2813 record. She also earned All Atlantic Region honors in 1995 and ‘96. After serving as an assistant coach at Edinboro for a season, she moved to North Alabama as a graduate assistant coach in 1998. That was the beginning of a very successful coaching career. Radecki spent one season as the head coach at St. Leo, and completed her fourth season as the head coach at North Alabama in the fall. During that period her teams have compiled a 11530 record. She won Gulf Coast Conference championships in each of her first three seasons, along with guiding the Lions to the 2006 NCAA South Central Region title and a berth in the National Championship match. She was named the GSC East Division Coach of the Year and AVCA Regional Coach of the Year in 2005 and 2006. Stephanie Radecki (middle) receives her Hall of Fame plaque from President Dr. Jeremy Brown (right) and Director of Athletics Bruce Baumgartner (left).

All-Americans & Yearly Honors Ashley Walton AVCA All-American; Third Team, 2002 & 2003 2003 PSAC West Athlete of the Year Ashley Walton was the first Edinboro volleyball player to earn AVCA Division II All American honors. She was joined by Jenna Newman (see page 1) a year ago. The 5’10” middle hitter from Manchester, PA was a third team selection in 2002, then duplicated that fete in 2003. Those were two of many honors earned by Walton during her career. She was recognized as the PSAC West Player of the Year as a senior, and also earned All Atlantic Region honors all four years. She was a fourtime AllPSAC choice, as well, earn ing second team honors as a freshman before moving up to the first team her final three years. As a freshman, she was also the Atlantic Region and PSAC West Rookie of the Year.

Jenna Newman 2007 AVCA & Daktronics All-American; PSAC West Athlete of the Year Jenna Newman capped a brilliant career in 2007 as she became Edinboro’s second AVCA All American, joining Ashley Walton. The 5’10” middle hitter earned honorable mention AVCA All American accolades and was a third team Daktronics AllAmerican. In addition, she was rec ognized as the PSAC West Athlete of the Year. She earned a spot on the AllPSAC West first team for the second straight year. While leading Edinboro to a 2811 record and a berth in the Atlantic Regional championship match, Newman fell just shy of setting the school record for kills in a season, finishing with 616. That left her with 1,899 career kills, seven shy of Walton’s school record of 1,906.
