times during Kagiavas’ tenure. And once a rare occurrence to show up in the Northeast Region rankings, the Fighting Scots are now a weekly member of the top ten. The 2003 Fighting Scots had registered the previous school record for wins while finishing with a 1271 record. Edinboro made its second appear ance in the PSAC Playoffs. The Fighting Scots climbed as high as fourth in the Northeast Region rankings during the year. In 2002 Edinboro fell one point shy of qualifying for postseason action, com piling a 954 record. Kagiavas' teams accomplished a rarity in his first six seasons, finishing with a better record each year. The 2001 Fighting Scots went out and posted an 1151 record, including a schoolrecord sixgame winning streak. The Fighting Scots advanced to the PSAC Playoffs for the first time. Edinboro dropped a 10 decision to Bloomsburg in its first postseason venture, but that could not diminish a season which saw the Scots climb as high as 14th in the NSCAA Division II rankings. Along the way, the Scots defeated 13thranked Slippery Rock, 30, while suffering four of its five losses to nationally ranked opponents. Thanks to five wins in its final seven contests, Edinboro posted its first winning season in 2000, going 1081. The Fighting Scots had a fourgame win streak in which it held opponents scoreless for 500 minutes. The team also recorded the pro gram's first win over local rival Gannon. The Fighting Scots weren't without their growing pains, as Edinboro's firstever women's

ary Kagiavas was appointed Edinboro University's first head coach of the Fighting Scot women's soccer program in August of 1996. The former Gannon University standout started the Edinboro pro gram that year, and since that time it has become one of the stronger teams in the Northeast Region. In his 13 seasons as head coach, Kagiavas has guided the Fighting Scots to a 11011118 record. A year ago Kagiavas guided a young team, and one depleted by injuries, to a 7111 finish. That included a 32 upset of Western Division regular season champion Gannon. The year before that Edinboro finished with a 1353 record. That represented the most wins in school history, and the Fighting Scots capped it with their firstever postseason victory. Kagiavas was honored as the PSAC West Coach of the Year. It marked the third time he Gary Kagiavas at Edinboro had received the honor, Year W L T Pct. Head Coach soccer edition finished with a 2140 record in 1996. The ledger improved slightly in 1997, as Kagiavas' second team posted a 5101 finish. The Fighting Scots improved to 9100 in 1998. That included a 2 1 overtime win over West Virginia Wesleyan, an out fit ranked second in Division II at the time. In 1999 the Fighting Scots posted a 991 finish to earn their first nonlosing season. Edinboro debuted in the regional rankings during the season, a first for Kagiavas's squad. Included in the victories was another triumph over a nationallyranked foe, as the Fighting Scots posted a 21 win at 14th ranked Slippery Rock. Edinboro saw a run of five straight winning seasons come to an end three years ago following a 693 finish, and his Fighting Scots suffered a sec ond straight losing campaign in 2005, finishing at 7 93. However, thanks to a 532 ledger in the PSAC West, Edinboro made its thirdever appearance in the PSAC Playoffs. Kagiavas brought a wealth of coaching expe rience to Edinboro, both locally and at the interna tional level. He joined the Edinboro staff after serv ing as assistant manager of the Family First Sports Park in Erie for two years. At Family First, he was responsible for organizing all phases of the facility's indoor and outdoor soccer leagues. Kagiavas has served as the coaching director of the Edinboro Regional Soccer Club. Under his direction, the organization has grown from four to 14 teams. In the 199798 season, he took the 15 under team to the state finals. In recent years he has taken the Erie Admirals U17 Girls team to the state championship and to the Final Four of Region 1. The team has finished in the top 16 in the coun try in their age group. He is the girls coaching direc tor at the Erie Admirals. In 2004 Kagiavas had two more state champions with the Erie Admirals in the Under17 and Under18 girls teams. That marked four state champions in four years. Kagiavas was a standout defender at Gannon from 198791, and played professionally in his native South Africa, along with Greece and Canada, after earning his bachelor's degree in 1991. He has held a variety of coaching positions in many levels of com petition since 1989, highlighted by a successful stint as a professional coach in South Africa. At Gannon, Kagiavas was a fouryear starter at midfield and defender for a Golden Knight team which advanced to the NCAA Division II Final Four in 1989 and 1990. Gannon was 58148 during his four seasons, with three NCAA playoff appearances. Kagiavas played professionally for a St. Catherines team that won the Canadian Cup in

Edinboro Women’s Soccer 2009

the National Soccer League. He was a player/coach for the Springs Old Boys and Boksburg 'Two for Joy,' as well as for the Eastern Transvaal allselect indoor team. In 1994, Kagiavas served as the head coach of Gannon's men's junior varsity soccer program, also assisting with the varsity squad as the Golden Knight men posted a 1520 record and advanced to the NCAA Final Four. Kagiavas began his coaching career with the Erie Strikers while also directing the Villa Maria Elementary School team. In the spring of 1992, Kagiavas was assistant coach of the Boksburg "Two for Joy" Division I team that competed in the National Soccer League of South Africa. In the sum mer of 1991, he was the head coach of the Springs (South Africa) Old Boys of the Division II men's semiprofessional league, earning Coach of the Year honors. Kagiavas has earned a South African coaching license, a professional referee license, and his United States Soccer Federation National B License and has his NSCAA Regional Coaching License. He has become heavily involved in the administrative side of the sport. He serves as the Northeast Regional chair for the NSCAA, and is also the PSAC chair for womens soccer and a member of the NCAA Division II East Region committee. He and his wife, Dawn, a native of St. Marys, Pa., reside in Fairview with their 12yearold daugh ter, Kaylee.

fter con cluding a brilliant career at Edinboro University with a recordbreaking season as a senior in 2003, Jamie Sallie is in her fifth season as an assis tant coach for the Fighting Scots. As a senior, Sallie set school records for goals scored (21) and points (48) in a season. She was a first team AllNortheast Region and AllPSAC selection. In addition, she ranked sec ond in the PSAC in points, points per game, goals, and goals per game, and was 13th in Division II in goals per game and 15th in points per game. Sallie concluded her career ranked first in goals scored (37) and second in career points (85) despite playing just three seasons for the Fighting Scots. She played at Central Michigan as a freshman. A former standout at nearby McDowell High School, she was also a first team AllPSAC

2009 Season Preview Youthful Boro Squad Looks for Playoff Berth in Tough Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference

In sports, sometimes you have to take some lumps along the way to building a winner. Edinboro University head coach Gary Kagiavas found that out a year ago, both literally and figura tively. His youthful Fighting Scots squad suffered through a 7111 finish in 2008, and not only was it a team forced to rely greatly on youth, but it also had to endure injuries to several key players. No fewer than seven freshmen, plus several more sophomores, saw considerable action. The good thing for Kagiavas is those players are now a year older, and the longtime coach at Edinboro hopes a year better. “I expect us to be a year more mature,” admitted Kagiavas. “Last year’s players were not leading players, except for Ashley (Jones) and Elise (Falatach). We played many new kids who did not really contribute before. In reality I thought the seniors could get us through the tran sition until the freshmen came around.

Senior Lauren Christie enters her third year as a starter and is expected to help anchor the defense.

Edinboro Women’s Soccer 2009

Unfortunately we ended up counting on the new kids anyway.” In addition to the youth, another key factor in the team’s first losing season since 2005 was a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference that rates among the best in Division II. Over the last few years the PSAC has evolved into a very tough league, and 2008 saw the addition of Gannon and Mercyhurst into the Western Division. “We play each team twice which makes up more than twenty percent of our schedule,” emphasized Kagiavas. It just so happened that the two newcomers finished onetwo in the West, with Gannon going 11 62 and Mercyhurst 1554. The second place Lakers ended up winning the PSAC championship. Throw in perennial power Slippery Rock (1471), California(Pa.) (1253), and Indiana(Pa.) (1391) and it was easy to see why Kagiavas viewed his sched ule like walking through a minefield. At the same time, the evidence that the Fighting Scots aren’t that far off the pace was a 32 win over Gannon. In addition, Edinboro battled Slippery Rock to a 11 tie. “The PSAC is an incredibly difficult and unforgiving conference,” explained Kagiavas. “I am optimistic that with the kids we recruited that they will definitely make us better. How long will be determined by their ability to pick up the game plan and how quick they are able to contribute. The problem is everyone seems to have recruited excellent players. Mercyhurst has six new interna tional players. California brought in the Jamaican national team goalkeeper and a player from Germany. Gannon had another solid recruiting year as did Slippery Rock. So the conference will be brutal once again.” Kagiavas hopes the addition of his own strong recruiting class, the return to health of sev eral players, and the added maturity will close the gap. “We have recruited four new forwards, some really quick and skilled players. I expect them to help Rachel Dahlstrand so she doesn’t get doubleteamed every game,” Kagiavas pointed out. “This year I expect players like Amber McLaughlin, C.J. Allen and Melanie Prelec to con tribute even more. Our top freshmen from last year got valuable minutes and understand the commitment it takes to win in this legue. I believe we will have some kids stepping up this year who didn’t last year due to being freshmen. “We actually outshot seven of our oppo

2009 Season Preview nents in the eleven losses,” he continued, “but the quality of the finishing was not the best. We cre ated opportunities that were squandered and then gave up soft goals in return.” Kagiavas is hoping that the influx of talent ed forwards will jump start an attack that scored just 30 goals, with 12 games of one goal or more. Defensively, he faces a huge transition with the graduation of Ashley Jones. Jones, likely the most talented player to don a Fighting Scots uniform since the program’s inception in 1996, became Edinboro’s first fourtime AllPSAC West selection. She anchored the defense and was a major reason the Fighting Scots posted 22 shutouts during her four seasons. “It is almost impossible to replace a player like Ashley Jones,” surmised Kagiavas. “However, we did recruit some very strong defensive players. Collectively we could be better than last year. Also, we are changing our defensive approach and strate gy. This will be due to the loss of Ashley Jones, but also due to the strengths of the new players.” After listening to Kagiavas, however, it’s obvious that he will once again have to put up

with the perils of youth, although he feels the tal ent is worth it. The youth, plus the schedule, will make for an interesting 2009 campaign. The Fighting Scots start off the 2009 season on Friday, August 28, hosting Urbana.

Forwards Rachel Dahlstrand proved a huge addition to the team a year ago after transferring from West Virginia University. The junior finished as the leading scorer with 12 goals and 4 assists for 28 points. The 12 goals are tied for the secondhigh est season total, and the 28 points is tied for fourth. Even more amazing was that she had to shake off quite a bit of rust after sitting out the 2007 season at WVU and seeing limited action the year before that. Rachel is a strong, physical player who was our top scorer a year ago,” Kagiavas assessed. “I think she’ll be able to help more this season as she knows the system better.” Several other returnees will look to boost the attack. Like Dahlstrand, C.J. Allen is a junior who joined the Fighting Scots a year ago. She transferred from Wheeling Jesuit. In 19 matches she finished with three assists. She scored six goals the previous year at Wheeling Jesuit, and Kagiavas expects her production to pick up. Sophomores Amber McLaughlin and Melanie Prelec showed promise a year ago, particularly McLaughlin, who finished as the secondleading scorer with four goals and four assists for 12 points while playing in mainly a reserve role. Prelec saw action in 16 matches and contributed an assist. Kagiavas notes four freshmen who could make an impact in 2009. They are Dakota France, Karisa Fernandez, Jenna Madison, and Cassee Kiplinger. The biggest common denominator among the group is speed. “Consistent scoring was a big issue for us,” stressed Kagiavas. “All the forwards were new and were learning the system and different forma tions we play. We have nine players that should help in this area, each with a slightly different strength. Hopefully we can be more aggressive in front of the goal.”

Midfielders

Heather Weismilleris an intense competitor who has started 27 matches in her career.

Youth will likely be served in the midfield despite the return of starters Heather Weismiller and Jessica Morgan, along with Taylor Stetka. Weismiller is a senior who has enjoyed a very solid career, and will now be counted on even more. A hardnosed player who has battled injuries due to her rough style, she played in 16 matches with 15

Page 6

Edinboro Women’s Soccer 2009

2009 Seazson Preview starts a year ago. Weismiller had a goal and two assists, off the pace of six goals and three assists in 2007. “Heather is a strong, physical player with the desire to win,” Kagiavas stated. “She has excellent field vision, wins everything in the mid field, and starts our attack. We expect more scor ing responsibilities from her this year.” Morgan is a sophomore who started 17 matches as a true freshman. She was tied for third in scoring with a pair of goals and an assist. Kagiavas feels that with the year of experience Morgan will take charge more in 2009, and be more involved in the attack. Stetka is also a sophomore who stepped in as the year went on to start 10 matches. She did not score, but is known as a playmaker. Two other returnees hope to make a contri bution after missing time due to injuries. Emily Leone has missed the last two seasons due to a pair of ACL surgeries after starting 10 matches in 2006 before going down. Brittanie Bidak, a junior, was starting to see more playing time a year ago before suffering a seasonending injury. She appeared in nine match es, scoring one goal. No fewer than five incoming freshmen fig ure to push for significant playing time. Amanda Bartell, Catherine Messmer and Alexis Dinapoli will likely be more offensive threats, while Steph Tighe and Emily Marin are defensive specialists. As a group Kagiavas likes the fact that they are physical and strong on the ball.

Defenders Ashley Jones will no doubt be very difficult to replace. But the defense has always been a strong suit of Kagiavas’ teams, and that should be the case once again. Maria Dembrow and Lauren Christy are seniors who started 18 and 16 matches, respectively, a year ago. Then there’s Devyn Agett and Jamie Warren, who saw plenty of play ing time a year ago. Dembrow is a former midfielder who has not approached her freshman scoring figures of five goals and seven assists for 17 points, but has started 52 matches in her career. A year ago Dembrow had three assists, boosting her into ninth place in career assists with 12. “Maria has moved to defense from the out side midfield,” commented Kagiavas. “She is very fast and able to contribute going forward from the defensive position.” Christy is not a flashy player, but she is a fun damentally sound performer who has 34 career starts to her credit. “Lauren is a very smart player

Edinboro Women’s Soccer 2009

who reads the game well and plays well under pressure,” Kagiavas noted. “Agett suffered through somewhat of a sophomore slump after starting 19 matches as a freshman. A year Agett started 11 matches while playing in 17, with an assist. She has plenty of speed and will play the right side. Warren played in all 19 matches, with three starts, as a freshman. Kagiavas looks for her to anchor the defense in 2009 after using the 2008 season to adjust to the college game. “Jamie is an excellent reader of the game,” Kagaivas pointed out, “and is very active in organizing all aspects of our defense. Much is expected from Jamie.” A pair of juniors – Shannon Seiler and Nicole Rolik – round out the group of returnees. Seiler played in 11 matches, with six starts, a year ago before missing the latter part of the season due to injuries suffered in an automobile accident. Rolik appeared in a pair of contests. Kagiavas singles out a trio of freshmen who could make an impact on defense. He notes that Nicole Hoffman will likely contribute early in the season, while Alena Costello and Casey Rogozinski are known for their mantoman defen sive skills. “We are changing our defensive organiza tion due to the loss of Ashley Jones,” admitted Kagiavas. “We have some excellent defenders to play in the flat back four formation. This plan was in place since last year when we knew we were going to have to replace Ashley.”

Goalkeepers The Fighting Scots must replace Lisa Bartolowits, who saw most of the action in goal the last three years. That’s not to say that they don’t possess experience in the net. Samantha Cairns has teased Kagiavas with her abilities, and has started some big matches for the Fighting Scots, but injuries and inconsistency have held her back. The senior appeared in just five matches a year ago, ending with a 110 record and a 2.28 goals against average. However, the year before she was 640 with a 1.22 GAA. “Samantha is technically the best goalkeep er we have,” Kagiavas stated. “She can play with her feet very well. But history shows us that Sam is not durable. “ Kate Stukbauer gained valuable experience as a freshman a year ago. She played in six con tests, posting a 110 record with a 1.17 GAA. “Katie is tall and very athletic,” Kagiavas commented. “She is an excellent shot blocker. I think both are very good.”
