Head Coach

Chris Rhodes 10th Year Edinboro ‘95

F

ormer Edinboro All­American Chris Rhodes was appointed the head swimming coach at his alma mater in October of 2001.

He competed for Edinboro from 1991­95, earning All­American honors in 1993­94 and 1994­95 as a member of freestyle relay teams.

He also earned All­PSAC honors and set a school record as a member of the 200 freestyle relay team. That relay team finished second at the NCAA Division II National Championships and set a conference record that stood for six years.

A key part of legendary teams while a swimmer at Edinboro, Rhodes’ goal since tak­ ing over has been simple yet ambitious ­­ to return the Fighting Scots to a prominent spot in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference.

Since assuming the role of head coach Rhodes has worked hard building the founda­ tion, and he has begun to see some of the fruits of his efforts the last few years.

A number of young swimmers have qualified for the PSAC Championships, and Zak Clifford earned honorable mention All­ American honors in 2010 in the 200­yard back­ stroke. Clifford also set the school record in the 200 backstroke at the PSAC Championships. That performance helped the men’s swimming team finish fourth out of seven teams at the PSAC’s.

Though Clifford was the men’s team’s only national qualifier in 2010, he was joined in earning All­PSAC honors with teammates Tom Mechling, Darren Suroviec and Ryan Sestak on the 200­yard relay team. The 400­yard relay team of Suroviec, Sestak, Max Nabutovsky and Dave Fico also earned All­ PSAC honors.

As a team the men finished with a 5­3 record during the 2009­10 season The women’s team, meanwhile, came in eighth at the PSAC Championship. Their sea­ son was highlighted by the 200­yard medley relay team of Kate Marschner, Hannah Rankin, Katie Close and Desiree Thomas quali­ fying for Nationals. Close also qualified for nationals in the 100­yard butterfly, while Marschner qualified in the 100 and 200­yard breaststroke.

Academics has also been a major part of Rhodes’ agenda. His women’s teams have earned All­Academic honors every semester but one, and the men’s team has earned simi­ lar honors.

Rhodes began his coaching career as an assistant swimming coach at Titusville High School in 1996­97, then moved on to Ashland University, one of the top programs on the Division II level, as an assistant swimming coach while completing work on his master's degree in Reading, which he received in August 1999. He coached a two­time national champion while at Ashland.

Rhodes returned to western Pennsylvania as the assistant swimming coach at Oil City Area High School for the 1999­2000 season. He has also served as the head coach of the Stroke Development Camp at Westminster College. In addition, he has been a Reading Specialist in the Oil City Area School District.

Rhodes graduated from Edinboro in December 1995 with a bachelor's degree in Elementary Education and Early Childhood Education. He and his wife Stephanie reside in Edinboro, along with their sons, Greysen (5), and Griffin (1) . He is a member of the College Swim Coaches Association of America and the American Swimming Coaches Association.

Women’s Preview The women’s swimming program con­

tinued to improve last season with a 5­8 record and an eight place finish out of 13 teams at the PSAC Championship. Kate Marschner and Katie Close each qualified indi­ vidually for Nationals in the 100­yard breast­ stroke and 100­yard butterfly respectively. In addition, the 200­yard medley relay team of Marschner, Close, Hannah Rankin and Desiree’ Thomas also qualified.

The Fighting Scots are returning 13 swim­ mers along with adding 13 newcomers to complete they hope will be a strong lineup.

Here’s Rhodes’ assessment of the upcoming season: FREESTYLE – Swimming the sprint free events are Hannah Rankin, Mallory Waldinger, Kari Sheahan and newcomers Alexis Berdine, Lauren Curtin, and Julie Moretti. Swimming mid distance free will be freshmen Katie Kelly, Julia Lockmyer, Natalie Smith, Maria Tarbell, Sara Weeks and returner Megan Kaulius. Distance free will be Marie Nedley, Jeannette Trok, and Kayla Joy. Marie is the school record holder in the

500, 1000, and 1650 free. Our freestyle events should compete very well at this years PSAC championships.

BACKSTROKE – This will be a strong event for us. Katie Close returns as the top backstroker. Madeline Hedstrom, Karie Sheahan, Rankin, and Berdine will compete here.

BREASTSTROKE –Kate Marschner will head up these events after her All­ Conference performance at last year’s PSAC championships. Alisha LaRosa, Colleen Sheldon and newcomers Larissa Dobson and Brittany Stanford will have a big impact as well.

BUTTERFLY – Katie Close again will be counted here, as well as, Victoria Brannan, Weeks, Tarbell, and newcomers Emma Holzer and Jen Adelman.

IM­ Chelsea Grosser returns as the top per­ former after setting a new record in the 400 IM last year. LaRosa, Joy, Sheldon, Dobson, Stanford, and Close will be counted on as well.

Men’s Preview T

he Edinboro University men’s team continues to grow, not just in quantity, but also quality. In 2009, the Fighting Scots came in seventh out of eight teams but Rhodes was extremely pleased with the progress the men made. Last season they improved to a fourth­place finish and Zak Clifford earned honorable mention All­ American honors.

BACKSTROKE ­­ This will be a very strong event for us. Zak Clifford will lead the way after finishing 13th at last years NCAA cham­ pionships in the 200 back, Previous school record holder Niggel will have big impact too. Also, Darren Suroviec who finished in the top 16 at PSAC championships will com­ pete. Newcomer Tony Romanini, will make immediate impact as well.

Here’s Rhodes’ assessment for each event:

BREASTSTROKE ­­ Tom Mechling leads the way after a top 16 performance a year ago. Newcomers Jared Malecki and Brian Wilson will also be counted on.

FREESTYLE ­­ Swimming the sprint events are Max Nabutovsky, Graham Clouser, and newcomer Seth Dippold who placed fourth at the PIAA meet in the 50­yard freestyle last year. Swimming mid distance free are Dave Fico, Ryan Sestak, and Dippold. The distance will be a strong event for us with Max Niggel, Drew Sapp, Jon Stanton, Jeff Schleicher, and Jeremy Banachoski compet­ ing.

BUTTERFLY ­­ Ben Rafalski, Darren Suroviec, Adam Cvetich, Tom McELhaney, will lead the way. Romanini will also be counted on as well.

IM ­­ Romanini, Rafalski, Clifford, and Cvetich will be the top contenders for us.
