an Gierlak enters his 21st season at the helm of the Edinboro University soft ball program. The veteran coach guided Edinboro to a school record 26 wins a year ago, as the Fighting Scots finished with a 2619 ledger. The 26 wins surpassed the 1986 squad which fin ished 238. Edinboro qualified for the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Playoffs for the second time in three years, and third time overall, winning a pair of games. Edinboro finished as the number two seed out of the Western Division. The 2009 Fighting Scot squad also had its firstever AllAmerican, as second base man Dana Webb was named to the third team Louisville Slugger/NFCA AllAmerican Team, and was a first team Daktronics All American. Webb also became the first Fighting Scot recognized as the PSAC West Player of the Year. Gierlak has now guided the Fighting Scots to six twentywin campaigns in his 20 years. He owns an overall record of 308 4163. In 2008 the Fighting Scots barely missed qualifying for the NCAA playoffs, fin ishing the year with an 1820 record after losing five of their final seven contests. The 2007 campaign was one of its most successful seasons in school history, as the Fighting Scots made their second ever trip to the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Playoffs, then were selected for the NCAA Playoffs. That marked the first time an Edinboro team had been selected for NCAA postsea

Page 2

son play. The Fighting Scots responded with a strong showing in the MidAtlantic Regional, upsetting nationallyranked Kutztown and Shippensburg before finally being eliminated. All told, Edinboro finished with a 2122 and was 127 in the PSAC West, good for sec ond place. The season was capped by a 10 win over the defending national champion and 2007 NCAA Division II runnerup Lock Haven. The victory snapped the Lady Eagles’ 34game winning streak. The 21 wins represented the most since the 2000 team went 2115. That was also the last team to win more conference games, as the 2000 edition went 146 in league plays. Gierlak began his coaching career in football before concentrating on softball. He coached the Edinboro softball team from

198994, then after a oneyear hiatus in 1995 to focus solely on his duties as an assistant on former head coach Tom Hollman’s foot ball staff, he returned in 1996 and has led the Fighting Scots ever since. After graduating from Edinboro in 1983, Gierlak moved on to Thiel College, serving as an assistant football coach in 1984. His next stop was semiprofessional football, direct ing the Chicago Cowboys to a national title in 1984 and a secondplace national finish in 1985. Gierlak returned to his alma mater in 1986, serving as an assistant football coach at Edinboro for nine seasons. He was responsible for the recruitment and coach ing of eight Fighting Scot AllAmericans, including 1989 Harlon Hill Finalist Elbert Cole and Jeremy O’Day, a 1996 firstteam All PSAC offensive lineman and a member of the 1998 CFL Grey Cup champion Toronto Argonauts and 2007 Grey Cup champion Saskatchewan Roughriders. A native of Buffalo, New York, Gierlak graduated from Edinboro with a Bachelor’s Degree in Health and Physical Education. He was a threeyear letterman for the Fighting Scots football team as a defensive back. Gierlak and his wife, the former Amy Adams, reside in Edinboro and have three

children, Alexandria Alicia (19), a freshman on the Edinboro softball team, Daniel Jr. (Joey) (16) and Lauren (12). Amy is an Edinboro graduate, as well, and was the 1989 Nancy Acker Award winner, recogniz ing as the top senior female athlete at Edinboro.

Baby Boro Squad Features Depth, Versatility

Edinboro University softball coach Dan

Gierlak has become accustomed to playing the role of underdog. Now in his 21st season as the head coach of the Fighting Scots, Gierlak has seen his team annually underappreciated, even in recent years when the Fighting Scots have shown marked improvement. So when the PSAC Western Division coaches picked Edinboro to tie for fourth, or last, with Gannon, it came as little surprise to Gierlak. Of course, it’s easy to see why the Fighting Scots enter the 2010 campaign as the underdog. For starters, gone is Dana Webb, Edinboro’s firstever AllAmerican and the PSAC West Player of the Year. Her double play mate, shortstop Katelyn Gurgiolo, must also be replaced, and that won’t be easy given her defense and base

Catcher Aimee Sisson was one of a number of freshmen to make big contributions in 2009.

Page 4

stealing ability. Gurgiolo was a second team AllPSAC West selection a year ago who holds the Edinboro career record for stolen bases. The duo was a major reason Edinboro ended the year with a rush to finish second in the PSAC West and qualify for the PSAC Tournament. The Fighting Scots finished with a 2619 record, breaking the school record for wins in a season. “I don’t know that you replace those kids,” emphasized Gierlak. “Both were four year starters. You try to get kids that can devel op like they did. Dana made so many big plays offensively and defensively. But we have kids in the middle who will develop. We’ll be stronger in time. People forget that those kids (Webb and Gurgiolo) took their lumps as freshmen.” Ah, speaking of freshmen. It’s a catch 22 situation, as Gierlak has put together backto back outstanding recruiting classes. While great for the future development of the pro gram, the roster at times bears the look of a daycare roster. Talk about the growing pains! “We could have at times as many as seven fresh men on the field,” admitted Gierlak. “Plus you throw in the sophomores that played last year. We’re young at every spot; very young at every spot. That concerns me. We can be better defensively this year but we’ll make more mistakes at the beginning of the season due to our youth.” The influx of youth has given Gierlak something he hasn’t had in quite some time – depth. “Our strength is going to be eventually we’ll have very good depth in pitching that we haven’t had in the past. It’s tough when you have to replace three infielders. We have more depth there. I’m real encouraged by our outfield. We’ll be very good … but in time,” he cautioned. It all gets underway for the Fighting Scots with the annual southern trip to the Rebel Spring Games in Kissimmee, Florida on March 712. Edinboro will face an improved schedule in the Sunshine State, facing the likes of C.W. Post, Indianapolis, MinnesotaDuluth and Truman State.

Edinboro University Softball 2010

“The Florida trip will give us some idea where we are at,” Gierlak concluded. “We face a mix of teams down there. For a lot of the kids this will be their first time in a college game. Plus we play in the Salem Tournament a week later. That will get us ready for conference play.”

Pitchers Unlike last season when Gierlak had to replace recordsetting pitcher Vanessa Rose, this season he has a solid anchor to the staff in Beth Mullins. The junior was a first team All PSAC West selection a year ago when she stepped up to finish with a 1511 record and a 2.25 ERA. The 15 wins was tied for the third highest total in a season. In 168 innings, Mullins allowed 158 hits and 42 walks while striking out 117. “If Beth can stay healthy, she has the ability to dominate,” commented Gierlak. “She has to dominate people, particularly early, to keep us in games until we get our feet wet. If Beth can develop consistency she will really be tough.” The rest of the staff is comprised of main ly freshmen, but talented firstyear hurlers at that. Gierlak sees Amanda Shields and Brittney Mackey as the next two in line behind Mullins. “Shields’ ball has gotten a lot stronger and is breaking more and more,” assessed the veteran coach. “She’s learning to be a pitcher and not a thrower. Early on we need her to keep us in games. We need her to come up big and not be a freshman.” Shields was a standout at nearby Fort LeBoeuf High School, earning Class AA honor able mention AllState honors as a senior. Mackey, meanwhile, hails from Edgewood(Oh.) High School, where she saw most of her action behind the plate. “Mackey is a lot like Beth in that she’s really learned to change speeds. She throws extremely hard. She just needs experience. She played a lot of positions in high school, and number one wasn’t pitcher.” Stacie Balkovic saw considerable action early in the season a year ago. The sopho more ended the year with a 23 record with a 5.57 ERA. She displayed good control with eight walks in 27 2/3 innings. “Stacie is our most consistent pitcher in terms of hitting spots,” Gierlak pointed out.

Edinboro University Softball 2010

“She’s an offspeed pitcher. She came through in some big games last year.” Freshman Kari Falk was a prized recruit last spring after earning first team Class AA All State honors and leading Riverside(Pa.) High School to backtoback WPIAL championships. She was 182 with a 0.43 ERA a year ago. However, as good as she is on the mound, Gierlak has found she is even more valuable in center field. He stills plans to use her pitching talents, however. “She knows how to win,” he grinned. “Everything is offspeed and breaks. She’s a bigger kid with good control. She gives us a great person to close games. She can keep people off balance.” Several other hurlers look to provide fur ther depth, including Megan Rog, Amber Peluso, and Roxanne Herrington. Rog and peluso are sophomores. Gierlak notes that Rog has developed her breaking pitches and could be a lateinning pitcher. Peluso’s ball has constant movement.

Beth Mullins was a 2009 first team All-PSAC West choice.

Herrington is freshman who was a sec ond team Section 6 choice as a senior at Dunkirk(NY) High School. She has a good drop ball.

Infielders The Fighting Scots must replace starters at first base, second base and shortstop. Obviously replacing the double play combina tion of Dana Webb at second base and Katelyn Gurgiolo at shortstop will be extremely difficult. Gierlak will call on a host of players, mostly first year performers, to fill the middle infield voids. For starters, there’s Jessica VanDamia, a freshman who was at Edinboro a year ago but sat out the season. She can play both middle infield spots and could also see time at first base. “She’s got all the tools to be a great player,” raved Gierlak. “She has a strong bat and a strong arm, and she’s very athletic. She looks to be a leader, too.” Freshman Marissa Pullo is described by Gierlak as “probably the quickest player around the bases I’ve seen”. He continued, “ She’s very smart with a great work ethic, and she has a great swing. She has to take Dana’s place. She plays a lot like Dana in the field.” Pullo was a third team NYSSWA Class A AllState selection as a pitcher, along with earning AllWestern New York and AllCatholic honors for Holy Angels Academy(NY). Brittney Price saw plenty of action a year ago while playing second base, shortstop and third base. She ended up hitting .241 in 108 at bats, with a home run and 13 RBIS. “Brittney is one of the most versatile athletes I’ve had,” related Gierlak. “She will also play some first base, and can even play the outfield. She developed into a big game player last year. We look for her to pick up where she left off.” Sophomore Caitlin Baer is one of the few returning players in the infield mix, but she is coming off an injury. She played in just 12 games a year ago and was hitless in 12 at bats. She figures in the mix at second base. “Caitlin’s getting more comfortable in the infield, moreso at second base,” related Gierlak. “She’s very steady and has a very good swing. The more reps we get her the better she’ll be. She has very good hands.” Freshman T’ana Abt is another highly

Page 6

regarded recruit who can play both second and shortstop, and may also see time at third base. She helped Fredonia(NY) High School reach the Class B state finals the last three years. “T’ana is a big, strong kid who hits the ball well,” assessed Gierlak. “She has all the tools and takes to coaching very well. She has a very strong arm and has developed soft hands. A year from now she’ll start somewhere.” On the corners, Jade Thrower returns with a big bat for her sophomore season. Thrower hit .271 with six home runs and 19 RBIs, the six home runs tied for fourth in sea son. She saw most of her action at designated hitter a year ago, but it’s hoped she can hold down first base. “Jade has worked hard at becoming an infielder,” related Gierlak. “Because of her bat she has to play. She can change a game with one swing.” Sophomore Jess White and freshman Kate Watrous also look for time at first base. White is an improving hitter with good power. A year ago she appeared in just two games with a double in two at bats. Watrous saw most of her time at short stop while playing for a strong Corry High School team, and she is an option at short stop, but Gierlak likes what he’s seen of her at first base. “Kate has a very good glove,” he noted, “along with a cannon for an arm. She finds ways to get to balls.” Freshman Stephanie Cassidy is the favorite to open the year at third base. “I’ve been very, very impressed with her work habits,” Gierlak commented. “She swings a great bat and is light years ahead of being a freshman. She is extremely mature for a fresh man. She has a beautiful swing, along with power, and has a nice glove.” She hit .413 a year ago at North Allegheny(Pa.) High School. Senior Amanda Weeman is the top reserve at third base. The diminutive senior played in nine games last year, but did not get a hit in seven at bats. “Amanda has worked hard over the past year to develop as a player,” Gierlak stated. “She just eats up bunts. Plus she’s a great kid.” Ashley Holmes, another senior, is also in reserve as is junior Tara Townsend, a transfer from LaRoche. Holmes has moved back and

Edinboro University Softball 2010

forth from the outfield to the infield and has been a very dependable player. She played in three games last year with three at bats. Townsend attended Edinboro a year ago but did not play softball. She can play first and third base and has shown marked improve ment with the glove. On final factor in the infield is Amanda Coressel. The junior will get a late start after playing for the women’s basketball team. She’ll go from guard to shortstop. Coressel was an outstanding high school player who then went on to play at Owens Community College. She hit .405 with seven doubles, two triples, and two home runs with 19 RBIs, along with 10 stolen bases last year at Owens. “Amanda could be our ace in the hole,” Gierlak predicted. “She’s an athlete who can play short, second, the outfield, and help as a pinch runner. I’m anxious to see her in game situations. Mentally she’s a tough kid.” The Fighting Scots are wellstocked at catcher. Aimee Sisson caught all but one game a year ago, and proved to be a strong defensive catcher with a promising bat. Sisson hit .250 and drove in 22 runs, tied for second on the team. She showed developing power with seven doubles, a triple and two home runs. “I thought Aimee should have been the PSAC Rookie of the Year,” stressed Gierlak. “She caught every game but one. She devel oped into a leader and has great work habits. She came up big in big games. She’s devel oped a lot more arm strength and has a quick release. Her bat will always be there.” The addition of freshman Ashley Black will allow Gierlak to give Sisson some time off and use her at designated hitter. Black was a first team AllRegion selection at catcher a year ago while playing at Fort LeBoeuf High School. “Ashley’s gotten better as a catcher, but her forte is hitting,” admitted Gierlak. “The ball explodes off her bat. We’re working with her at first base and she’ll DH. We need her bat in the lineup. Two other players add further depth behind the plate. Caitlyn Rog is a sophomore who played in four games last year, going 1 for6. Freshman Brielle Gaurrich played her high school ball at Deer Lakes(Pa.) High School, where she hit .412 for her career.

Edinboro University Softball 2010

Outfielders The biggest surprise in the outfield has been Kari Falk. A year ago at this time Gierlak was elated to have the freshman coming to Edinboro as a pitcher. But she has really opened his eyes as a center fielder. “She has the ability to be the best outfielder we’ve had,” exclaimed Gierlak. “She gets to balls you don’t think she can. Plus she hits the ball well, and has a very strong arm. With our field you need a center fielder who can run.” A host of other players will look to fill the corner outfield positions. Another freshman, Caitie Weber from Corry High School, looks to be the favorite in left field. As a senior she earned Class AAA honorable mention AllState accolades. Gierlak noted that her speed will come in handy. Three returnees in the mix are Carrie Hall, Lauren Smith and Missy Conrad. Hall saw con siderable action last year as a freshman, hitting .221 while starting 35 games. She had five dou bles and 13 RBIs while stealing five bases. She could be the regular in right field. “Carrie has worked hard on changing her approach at the plate,” noted Gierlak. “She can slap and bunt. I think she’s a more consis tent player this year. I think she’s really going to blossom this year.” Smith is a junior who hit .294 in 51 at bats, with seven of her 15 hits doubles. “Lauren is very strong, and a very coachable player,” said Gierlak. “Her playing time will be decided by her bat. When she hits, she hits it well. She needs to put it all together and be consistent.” Conrad is a senior who Gierlak notes has really developed. A year ago she played in 20 games with eight at bats. What would the outfield be without a couple more freshmen. Gierlak is all too famil iar with Alex Gierlak, his daughter. She played second base and pitched at General McLane High School, but has made a quick conversion to the outfield. Her biggest asset right now is her speed, and she could prove helpful both as a pinch runner and pinch hitter. Breanna Price is the younger sister of Brittany Price. She did not join the team until January, but looks to be a pretty good athlete. She has a strong arm and good power.
