Head Coach

Missy Soboleski 6th Year Gannon ‘93

M

issy Soboleski was hired as head volleyball coach at Edinboro University on February 3, 2005. Soboleski replaced Dale Flickinger, who was hired on an interim basis in late July to replace Lynn Theehs, who went to the University of Maine. All told, Soboleski has led Edinboro to four NCAA Division II Atlantic Region playoff berths in five years, along with trips to the PSAC Playoffs four times. She owns a 12266 as Edinboro's head coach. Her teams have won at least 23 matches in four of her five seasons. Edinboro finished the 2009 campaign with a 23 13 record, finishing third in the PSAC West with a 136 record. The Fighting Scots made their fourth trip to the NCAA Playoffs under Soboleski, defeat ing Clarion in the Atlantic Region quarterfinals before falling to Lock Haven in the semifinals. After a slow start, Soboleski returned the Fighting Scots to the ranks of the elite in the Atlantic Region in her first season. Edinboro finished its first year under Soboleski’s tute lage with a 2616 ledger, and was selected for the NCAA Division II Playoffs. The 26 wins were par ticularly impressive since

the Fighting Scots were struggling at 712 entering the final weekend in September. They would go on to win 17 of their final 19 regular season matches to qualify for the PSAC Tournament with a third place finish in the Western Division. With a fourgame win over Millersville in the quarterfinals, Edinboro reached the semifinals before falling in three games to Lock Haven. The same fate held true in the Atlantic Regional, as the Fighting Scots defeated Mount Olive in three games in the quarterfinals, but then lost in three games to Lees McRae in the semifinals. The Fighting Scots weren’t as fortunate in the 2006 campaign, as a young squad lost five of its last six matches to finish at 1917. Two of those losses came in five games. 2007 saw the Fighting Scots finish with a 2811 record, the most wins since the 1998 edition also won 28 matches. Edinboro enjoyed a successful play off run, reaching the PSAC Tournament semifinals, then falling in the finals of the Atlantic Regional Championship. A young 2008 squad devoid of any seniors post ed a 269 record, finishing second in the PSAC West and qualifying for the Atlantic Regional for the third time in four years. Soboleski’s ability to mold a team without any seniors and with four freshmen playing key roles did not go unnoticed. She was selected the AVCA Atlantic Region Coach of the Year. Soboleski is wellknown in local volleyball circles. She has previously coached at two local institutions, Mercyhurst and Gannon. She took over the Edinboro program after serving as the head coach at Mercyhurst from 19992004. At Mercyhurst, she inherited a volleyball pro gram that had not had a winning season since 1993, had won only five games in four years in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC), and had recorded just 26 wins in five previous sea sons. She proceeded to lead the Lady Lakers to three winning seasons in six years at the helm, including a 218 finish in 2002, winning the Southern Division

Head Coach championship. The 2001 team went 1916, and her 2003 team was 1615. Prior to taking over at Mercyhurst, Soboleski spent four seasons as the head coach at her alma mater, Gannon, where she was previously a standout player. Her 199598 Lady Knight editions reached the GLIAC Playoffs twice, including a 2114 record in her first season, with Gannon reaching the NCAA Division II Playoffs. Soboleski's final team was 1816 and qualified for the GLIAC Playoffs. She was an assistant coach under Gerry (Burbules) Vensel, a member of the Edinboro Athletic Hall of Fame, in 1994. "It has always been our intention to keep Edinboro University vol leyball in the forefront of the PSAC and the region," related Director of Athletics Bruce Baumgartner at the time of her hiring. "We think coach Soboleski has what it takes to continue Edinboro University's winning tradition. We feel our program is in very good hands. Missy brings a great deal of energy and experience to our program, and she is very familiar with what Edinboro volleyball represents. We also like the fact that she enjoyed an excellent graduation rate at Mercyhurst.”

A native of Rootstown, Ohio, Soboleski graduated from Gannon in 1993 with a bachelor's degree in Education and a minor in Sports Management and Health & Physical Education. A fouryear letterwinner for the Lady Knights from 1990 to 1993, Gannon was 11622 during that period. That included three straight trips to the Elite Eight to conclude her playing career. Soboleski enjoyed a distinguished career as a player, serving as a cocaptain in 1993. The outside hitter earned a spot on the Hamot Classic AllTournament team as a senior, then capped her career by earning AllTournament accolades in the NCAA Division II Atlantic Regional. She totaled 14 kills and 16 digs in the regional final win over Slippery Rock, propelling Gannon to its third straight trip to the Elite Eight. Soboleski resides in Edinboro with her three children Madison (10) and twins Braeden and Abigale (7). While at Gannon she also served as the SWA/Assistant Athletic Director.

immy Chan is in his second season as the assistant coach after being hired in July of 2009. Chan has 15 years of experi ence as a volleyball coach at vari ous levels, including a fiveyear stint as the head coach of the St. John Fisher volleyball team. He posted a 6585 record from 2002 06. His 2005 edition finished with a 1615 record. The Cardinals fin ished third in the Empire 8 Conference regular season then reached the Empire 8

Tournament semifinals. Chan was recognized as the Empire 8 Coach of the Year. He also guided the Cardinals to 16 wins in 2002, 2003 and 2004. “We are extremely excited to have Jimmy join the volleyball pro gram,” related Soboleski. “He brings a wealth of volleyball knowledge and experience that will help us tremendously on the court as well as recruiting.” Chan served as a math teacher at Canandaigua Academy in Canandaigua, NY, since 2000. He has also been heavily involved in coaching club teams, including the Niagara Frontier Volleyball Club from 200709. Chan is a graduate of Brockport State, where he earned his bache lor’s degree in Mathematics with a certification in Secondary Education in 2000. 2010 Season Preview Ask any coach and they’ll tell you winning never gets old. Edinboro University volleyball coach Missy Soboleski would concur. The veteran coach has had six 20win seasons, including four in her five seasons as the head coach of the Fighting Scots. A year ago she guided the Fighting Scots to a 2313 finish and a berth in the NCAA Playoffs for the fourth time in five years. What makes continuing that pattern so difficult is that players move on and unproven youngsters must come in and play key roles. That is the case once again in 2010, as six players have departed, including middle hit ters Olivia Williams and Brittany Slauterbeck. Williams was an AllPSAC West selection for the xx straight year, and both rank among the career leaders in kills. “You can never really replace what you have lost,” admitted Soboleski. “You can only hope you have strong, competitive athletes returning and new players who have that competitive attitude and have good chemistry together.” Edinboro definitely has a solid cast of characters returning, including a pair who rank among the best in the PSAC in what they do in setter Megan Osysko and libero Maureen Tilert. Add in former PSAC West Rookie of the Year Gina Boothe and Beyaca Martin, a former transfer from North Alabama in her second season as a Fighting Scot, and the Fighting Scots have a solid base. “Moe is a quiet leader on our team,” acknowledged Soboleski. “She leads by example. She has been our starting libero for three years now and brings a lot of experience to the court for us. She will once again be responsible for the oncourt defense and making big plays for us. Megan has been a solid, steady player leading our offense. She has a great poker face. Not only does our opponent not know when she’s rattled, but we don’t either.” Unfortunately, Soboleski will have to wait for Ellie Lininger to debut In 2010. The junior outside hitter is a powerful hitter but she will miss the beginning of the season while still recovering from knee surgery. With Williams and Slauterbeck gone and Lininger’s return delayed Soboleski knows that her Fighting Scots will need a number of new comers to con tribute if they are to challenge the likes of California(Pa.) and Lock Haven for the PSAC crown. The rosters features six returning players and seven new comers. “We have a string group of ath Megan Osysko letes coming in and

we have added some depth in the key positions,” Soboleski stressed. “Seth (Sullivan) and Nikolena (Feronti) will add some depth at the outside hitter position. Both are intense players who are very competitive. Erika (West) and Danielle (King) will add some depth to the defensive specialist/ libero position. Both come from good club programs with solid training. Martina (Davis) will add some height and depth to the opposite/middle blocker position. She is a transfer from Youngstown State.” In addition, the Fighting Scots have added Kelcie Hellmer, who previ ously played twoplus seasons on the women’s basketball team. The 60 middle hitter/outside hitter was a pleasant surprise in the spring. “Training hard throughout the spring and summer should prepare us for an intense preseason,” commented Soboleski. “We have depth that will “We have depth that will hopefully allow us to be hopefully allow us to be more versatile. more versatile. It starts with the Fairmont State Falcon Fest Tournament on Friday, September 3 and Saturday, September 4. Edinboro will play Fairmont State, Glenville State, Concord and West Liberty the first weekend. The competition takes a huge step upward the following weekend when Edinboro heads west to face a pair of nationallyranked teams while competing in the Central Missouri Peggy Martin Challenge. The Fighting Scots’ four matches include meetings with fifthranked Central Missouri, who was 345 last year, and 19thranked Pittsburg State (2911). The PSAC West is loaded with no fewer than five of the seven teams win ning 20ormore matches a year ago, and six of the seven showing winning records. In fact, the one thing missing from Soboleski’s resume is a PSAC ttle. Edinboro would like nothing better than to win its first conference crown since 2001. However, to do so the Fighting Scots must knock off a California(Pa.) team in search of its fourth straight PSAC crown. Here’s a look at the 2010 Fighting Scots, positionbyposition:

Setters The Fighting Scots are well set at setter with Megan Osysko. The 5’7” junior earned honorable mention AVCA AllAtlantic Region honors after finishing with a teamleading 1,228 assists. That figure ranked second in the PSAC and ranks tenth in a season at Edinboro. She added 269 digs, good for second on the team. Osysko already ranks seventh in career assists at Edinboro with 2,004 despite sharing the setter position her first two seasons. “Megan has been a solid, steady player leading our offense,” related Soboleski. “She has a great poker face. You never know if she’s rattled or not, although she

Middle Hitters A year ago Olivia Williams led the Fighting Scots with 297 kills and 86 total digs, with fellow senior Brittany Slauterbeck standing second in blocks with 75 while adding 227 kills. With that duo gone Soboleski looks for sev eral players to step up in 2010. That’s not to say Edinboro doesn’t have some talented performers in the middle. For starters there’s Beyaca Martin, a 5’8” senior with incredible leaping ability. Martin transferred to Edinboro a year ago after playing two seasons at North Alabama. She proved a huge addition, compiling 293 kills, second on the team, along with 56 total blocks, which was good for third. Adding in her two seasons at North Alabama, Martin enters her final sea son with 762 career kills. She could also see time at opposite. “We looking for Beyaca to become more of a terminator for us with the loss of Olivia (Williams) and Brittany (Slauterbeck),” admitted Soboleski. “She is hands down one of the most athletic players in the PSAC. She has great jumping ability.” Gina Boothe was named the 2008 PSAC West Freshman of the Year and was an AllPSAC and AVCA AllAtlantic selection. She enjoyed a solid sophomore campaign, as well. “Gina has the ability to carry a team offen sively,” noted Soboleski. “ She has trained very hard over the spring and summer. She can be one of the top offensive players in the PSAC.” The 6’1” junior contributed 277 kills, third on the team, a year ago, and also had 32 total blocks and 27 service aces. Like Martin, she could also see time at opposite. Newcomers Kelcie Hellmer and Martina Davis provide further depth, although both may have to shake off a little rust. Hellmer played twoplus seasons with the Edinboro women’s basketball team before deciding to try her hand at volleyball, where she was a standout in high school. A 5’11” senior with two years of eligibility remaining, Hellmer is very quick and was a pleasant surprise in the spring. Soboleski notes that she has made a strong transition from basketball to volleyball. Davis redshirted at Youngstown State a year ago and has four years of eligibility remaining. She is a raw but lanky and 6’0” tall. Soboleski feels she could play a key role as a blocker.

It is hoped that a pair of freshmen, Seth Sullivan and Nikolena Feronti, can come in and provide some depth at outside hitter and make up for the absence of Lininger. Sullivan is 5’10” and is a former standout at Chancellor(Va.) High School, where she earned allstate accolades. Feronti is 5’9” and hails from Texas. She helped Aledo High School to the Class 4A district runnerup as a senior after reaching the state quarterfi nals the previous two years. Soboleski likes her intensity.

Liberos/Defensive Specialists What Megan Osysko is the offense is what Maureen Tilert is to the defense. An energetic 5’3” senior, Tilert is a threeyear starter who mans the libero position. She already holds the career record for digs with 1,725 and holds three of the top seven season totals. A year ago she finished with 617 digs, the secondhighest total in school history. She ranked fifth in the PSAC and 24th in Division II in digs per game, also ranking fourth in the PSAC in total digs. “Moe is a great athlete with a lot of oncourt experience,” Soboleski stated. “She is a great role model for the incoming freshmen. We will rely heavily on her ball control this season. We also look for her to be a more vocal leader on the court.” Speaking of freshmen, she’ll be backed by three firstyear performers. Danielle King is a 5’7” freshman from Mount Notre Dame(Oh.) High School. She has a great deal of club experience on her resume, as does fel low freshman Erika West. West is 5’6” and played her high school volley ball just across the Ohio border at Riverside High School where she was a fourtime allconference honoree. Like Tilert, Soboleski notes that both are intense players who will see

Outside Hitters Juniors Angela Groshner and Ellie Lininger have seen plenty of action in their first two seasons and will play key roles in the team’s suc cess this year. Groshner is 5’8” and does all the little things that help a team win. “Angela is one of the top ball control players in the PSAC,” stressed Soboleski. “She has a very high volleyball IQ. She has good instincts and reaction in the OH2 position.” A year ago Groshner contributed 262 digs, fourth on the team, along with 182 kills and 25 services. Soboleski will have to wait a bit for Lininger. At 5’11” she possesses great hitting ability and plays above the net. However, she suffered a torn ACL late last year, missing the final nine matches, and underwent knee surgery in December. She will likely miss the opening of the season while rehabilitating the knee. “It was a major loss last season when Ellie blew out her ACL,” com mented Soboleski. “After intense rehab and training from Christmas to the preseason we’re sure hoping she will be ready to return to the OH1 position. Ellie has the ability to carry a team offensively. She plays very high above the net.” A year ago Lininger totaled 214 kills and 266 digs, the latter figure third on the team. She was also third in service aces (29). As a freshman she finished second on the team in both kills (326) and digs (333).

Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference } PSAC Overview

Originating in 1951 to administer and pro mote men's athletics, the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference has evolved into one of the NCAA's most heralded intercollegiate con ferences. The first major step came in 1977, when based on a growing interest, the league reor ganized to provide a structure for its women's programs. Only three years later, lacking a standard competitive division, league voted to reclassify the entire conference to NCAA Division II. The most recent enhancement came during the 200809 academic year when the PSAC expanded for the first time in its rich his tory, adding fulltime members Gannon University and Mercyhurst College, and associ ate member Long Island UniversityC.W. Post. The membership now consists of 16 fulltime institutions and the one associate. All of the league's fulltime members are located within the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, which makes the PSAC the largest onestate conference in the NCAA. The league has also grown to share the distinc tions as: The largest conference in Division II, the largest footballplaying conference in the NCAA, and, with 23, the conference that spon sors the most championships at the Division II level. Highly competitive on a regional and national level, PSAC schools annually combine to send nearly onethird of its teams into NCAA postseason play. Ultimately, the mem bership's success has yielded 43 NCAA team and 238 individual title winners. While proud of its athletic accomplish ments, the league also has evolved into one of Division II's finest from an academic stand point. Today, nearly onethird of the PSAC's estimated 6,200 participants are honored each year as "ScholarAthletes" for maintain ing a gradepoint average of 3.25 or better a total that has nearly doubled since PSAC ScholarAthletes were first recognized in the mid1990s. Although all 16 current institutions are members of Division II, eight league schools also compete at the Division I level in select sports. PSAC schools enroll over 125,000 stu dents and claim over 709,000 alumni, includ ing 482,000 who reside in Pennsylvania. The PSAC is governed by the presidents of the 16 member institutions. It employs a commissioner, two assistant commissioners and a director of media relations at its head quarters in Lock Haven, Pa.

Radecki Inducted into Hall of Fame Stephanie Radecki (‘97) starred as a member of the Edinboro volleyball team from 199396, and was the 1997 Nancy Acker Award winner. In April 2008 she was one of ten individuals inducted into the Edinboro University Athletic Hall of Fame. Edinboro made two appearances in the Elite Eight in her four seasons, capturing the Atlantic Region title in 1994 and again in 1996. A native of Meadville, PA, she ranks among Edinboro’s career leaders in a number of categories. She captured a number of honors during her career. She was a first team AllPSAC West selection in 1995 and 1996. In 1996, she was voted the PSAC West Athlete of the Year after leading the Fighting scots to a 2813 record. She also earned AllAtlantic Region honors in 1995 and ‘96. After serving as an assistant coach at Edinboro for a season, she moved to North Alabama as a graduate assistant coach in 1998. That was the beginning of a very successful coaching career. Radecki spent one season as the head coach at St. Leo, and completed her fourth season as the head coach at North Alabama in the fall. During that period her teams have compiled a 11530 record. She won Gulf Coast Conference championships in each of her first three seasons, along with guiding the Lions to the 2006 NCAA South Central Region title and a berth in the National Championship match. She was named the GSC East Division Coach of the Year and AVCA Regional Coach of the Year in 2005 and 2006. Stephanie Radecki (middle) receives her Hall of Fame plaque from President Dr. Jeremy Brown (right) and Director of Athletics Bruce Baumgartner (left).

All-Americans & Yearly Honors Ashley Walton AVCA All-American; Third Team, 2002 & 2003 2003 PSAC West Athlete of the Year Ashley Walton was the first Edinboro volleyball player to earn AVCA Division II All American honors. She was joined by Jenna Newman (see page 1) a year ago. The 5’10” middle hitter from Manchester, PA was a third team selection in 2002, then duplicated that fete in 2003. Those were two of many honors earned by Walton during her career. She was recognized as the PSAC West Player of the Year as a senior, and also earned All Atlantic Region honors all four years. She was a fourtime AllPSAC choice, as well, earn ing second team honors as a freshman before moving up to the first team her final three years. As a freshman, she was also the Atlantic Region and PSAC West Rookie of the Year.

Jenna Newman 2007 AVCA & Daktronics All-American; PSAC West Athlete of the Year Jenna Newman capped a brilliant career in 2007 as she became Edinboro’s second AVCA All American, joining Ashley Walton. The 5’10” middle hitter earned honorable mention AVCA All American accolades and was a third team Daktronics AllAmerican. In addition, she was rec ognized as the PSAC West Athlete of the Year. She earned a spot on the AllPSAC West first team for the second straight year. While leading Edinboro to a 2811 record and a berth in the Atlantic Regional championship match, Newman fell just shy of setting the school record for kills in a season, finishing with 616. That left her with 1,899 career kills, seven shy of Walton’s school record of 1,906.
