nals. It marked the fourth time Edinboro had quali fied for the PSAC Playoffs. In 2006, Kagiavas guided Edinboro to a 1070 record. All told, the Fighting Scots have won tenor more matches five times during Kagiavas’ tenure. And once a rare occurrence to show up in the Northeast Region rankings, the Fighting Scots are now a weekly member of the top ten. The 2003 Fighting Scots had registered the previous school record for wins while finishing with a 1271 record. Edinboro made its second appear ance in the PSAC Playoffs. The Fighting Scots climbed as high as fourth in the Northeast Region rankings during the year. In 2002 Edinboro fell one point shy of qualifying for postseason action, com piling a 954 record. Kagiavas' teams accomplished a rarity in his first six seasons, finishing with a better record each year. The 2001 Fighting Scots went out and posted an 1151 record, including a schoolrecord sixgame winning streak. The Fighting Scots advanced to the PSAC Playoffs for the first time. Edinboro dropped a 10 decision to Bloomsburg in its first postseason venture, but that could not diminish a season which saw the Scots climb as high as 14th in the NSCAA Division II rankings. Along the way, the Scots defeat ed 13thranked Slippery Rock 30, while suffering four of its five losses to nationallyranked opponents. Thanks to five wins in its final seven contests, Edinboro posted its first winning season in 2000, going 1081. The Fighting Scots had a fourgame win streak in which it held opponents scoreless for 500 minutes. The team also recorded the pro gram's first win over local rival Gannon.

ary Kagiavas was appointed Edinboro University's first head coach of the Fighting Scot women's soccer program in August of 1996. The former Gannon University standout started the Edinboro pro gram that year, and since that time it has become one of the stronger teams in the Atlantic Region. In his 14 seasons as head coach, Kagiavas has guided the Fighting Scots to a 11711824 record. Youth has been the key ingredient of his teams the last two years, and the results are indicative of that. Last year the Fighting Scots finished with a 775 record, suffering four losses by a goal. They had several bright moments, including a 10 upset of 17thranked California(Pa.) and a tie with 25th ranked Slippery Rock. Edinboro also won for the first time against local rival Mercyhurst. Two years ago Kagiavas guided another young team, and one depleted by injuries, to a 7111 finish. That included a 32 upset of Western Division regular sea Gary Kagiavas at Edinboro son champion Gannon. W L T Pct. Notes In 2007 Edinboro finished Year 1996 2 14 0 .125 with a 1353 record. Head Coach The Fighting Scots weren't without their growing pains, as Edinboro's firstever women's soccer edition finished with a 2140 record in 1996. The ledger improved slightly in 1997, as Kagiavas' second team posted a 5101 finish. The Fighting Scots improved to 9100 in 1998. That included a 21 overtime win over West Virginia Wesleyan, an out fit ranked second in Division II at the time. In 1999 the Fighting Scots posted a 991 finish to post their first nonlosing season. Edinboro debuted in the regional rankings during the season, a first for Kagiavas's squad. Included in the victories was another triumph over a nationallyranked foe, as the Fighting Scots posted a 21 win at 14th ranked Slippery Rock. Edinboro saw a run of five straight winning seasons come to an end four years ago following a 693 finish, and his Fighting Scots suffered a sec ond straight losing campaign in 2005, finishing at 7 93. However, thanks to a 532 ledger in the PSAC West, Edinboro made its thirdever appearance in the PSAC Playoffs. Kagiavas brought a wealth of coaching expe rience to Edinboro, both locally and at the interna tional level. He joined the Edinboro staff after serv ing as assistant manager of the Family First Sports Park in Erie for two years. At Family First, he was responsible for organizing all phases of the facility's indoor and outdoor soccer leagues. Kagiavas has served as the coaching director of the Edinboro Regional Soccer Club. Under his direction, the organization has grown from four to 14 teams. In the 199798 season, he took the 15 under team to the state finals. In recent years he has taken the Erie Admirals U17 Girls team to the state championship and to the Final Four of Region 1. The team has finished in the top 16 in the country in their age group. He is the girls coaching director at the Erie Admirals. In 2004 Kagiavas had two more state champions with the Erie Admirals in the Under17 and Under18 girls teams. That marked four state champions in four years. Kagiavas was a standout defender at Gannon from 198791, and played professionally in his native South Africa, along with Greece and Canada, after earning his bachelor's degree in 1991. He has held a variety of coaching positions in many levels of com petition since 1989, highlighted by a successful stint as a professional coach in South Africa. At Gannon, Kagiavas was a fouryear starter at midfield and defender for a Golden Knight team which advanced to the NCAA Division II Final Four in 1989 and 1990. Gannon was 58148 during his four seasons, with three NCAA playoff appearances. Kagiavas played professionally for a St. Catherines team that won the Canadian Cup in the

Edinboro Women’s Soccer 2010

National Soccer League. He was a player/coach for the Springs Old Boys and Boksburg 'Two for Joy,' as well as for the Eastern Transvaal allselect indoor team. In 1994, Kagiavas served as the head coach of Gannon's men's junior varsity soccer program, also assisting with the varsity squad as the Golden Knight men posted a 1520 record and advanced to the NCAA Final Four. Kagiavas began his coaching career with the Erie Strikers while also directing the Villa Maria Elementary School team. In the spring of 1992, Kagiavas was assistant coach of the Boksburg "Two for Joy" Division I team that competed in the National Soccer League of South Africa. In the sum mer of 1991, he was the head coach of the Springs (South Africa) Old Boys of the Division II men's semiprofessional league, earning Coach of the Year honors. Kagiavas has earned a South African coaching license, a professional referee license, and his United States Soccer Federation National B License and has his NSCAA Regional Coaching License. He has become heavily involved in the administrative side of the sport. He serves as the Northeast Regional chair for the NSCAA, and is also the PSAC chair for wom ens soccer and a member of the NCAA Division II Atlantic Region committee. He and his wife, Dawn, a native of St. Marys, Pa., reside in Fairview with their 13yearold daughter, Kaylee.

In addition, she ranked sec ond in the PSAC in points, points per game, goals, and goals per game, and was 13th in Division II in goals per game and 15th in points per game. Sallie concluded her career ranked first in goals scored (37) and second in career points (85) despite playing just three seasons for the Fighting Scots. She played at Central Michigan as a freshman. A former standout at nearby McDowell High School, she was also a first team AllPSAC

2010 Season Preview After Two Years of Growing Pains Fighting Scots Look to Challenge in the PSAC

As someone who started the Edinboro women’s soccer program from scratch back in 1996, Gary Kagiavas knows a thing or two about what it takes to build a team. From humble begin nings, which included a 2140 first season, to five straight winning seasons, Kagiavas has seen the Fighting Scot program grow. A year ago Edinboro finished with a 775 record while featuring an extremely young roster for the second year in a row. The Fighting Scots upset 17thranked California(Pa.) and tied 25th ranked Slippery Rock, in addition to picking up a firstever win over Mercyhurst. But they couldn’t overcome a powerful Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference, and again struggled to score goals, with one or less in 12 of 19 matches. But now this is a team a year older and a year more experienced, and Kagiavas likes what he sees. “This team should be better prepared for the season,” related the 16thyear mentor. “The team is composed mainly of sophomores and juniors, so I expect to compete with the best teams in the PSAC and do well.” That’s actually more than the rest of the coaches in the PSAC predict for the Fighting Scots. Edinboro was picked to finish tenth among the 15 teams in the newlook PSAC. Gone are two divi sions. Now the PSAC is all one with a total of 15 teams. The top eight will qualify for the PSAC playoffs. “Experience is now a strength whereas last year it was a concern,” Kagiavas commented. “Good leadership is a strength. Depth is our big concern. One major injury to a key player and the season may end up disappointing.” In particular, Kagiavas feels good about the leaders on his team. He listed players such as Rachel Dahlstrand, Jess Morgan, Devyn Agett and Jamie Warren as key leaders, but also mentioned other players such as Taylor Stetka, Steph Tighe and Catherine Messmer as team leaders. “I believe we have many committed kids ready to step up and be leaders,” assessed Kagiavas. With 14 letterwinners, including eight starters back, Kagiavas has reason to believe his team will be competitive this year. But standing in the way once again is a loaded PSAC which may be from top to bottom as good as any conference in Division II. “We play everyone in the conference this year,” Kagiavas pointed out. “The challenges are

Edinboro Women’s Soccer 2010

many. California(Pa.), Mercyhurst, Gannon, Slippery Rock, IUP, Kutztown and West Chester all seem to be the front runners. “Then it seems the next group is comprised of Edinboro, East Stroudsburg, Shippensburg and Bloomsburg, and the group of Lock Haven, Clarion, Milersville and Mansfield are historically propping up the PSAC. I can tell you that it is very difficult to get results at any of these schools away from home. This is going to be a huge challenge for us.” The season gets underway on Friday, September 3 when the Fighting Scots host AldersonBroaddus. That will mark the start of five straight home matches to start the season. However, if the Fighting Scots are to make a play off run, they will have to do so with a latter part of

Senior Rachel Dahlstrand has led the team in scoring both years as a Fighting Scot.

2010 Season Preview the schedule that includes just two home contests in the final seven matches. “All in all, I am very optimistic about the 2010 season,” concluded Kagiavas. “I believe we will do very well. We need a little luck with injuries and scoring, but it will be a good year.”

Forwards Scoring has been an issue for the Fighting Scots in recent years, but Kagiavas would like to think this year’s team has the ability to put some numbers up on the scoreboard. For starters, there’s Rachel Dahlstrand, the leading scorer her first two years as a Scot. The former transfer from West Virginia led the way with 11 goals and 4 assists for 26 points. She was accorded first team AllPSAC West honors. A year earlier Dahlstrand ended the year with 12 goals and 4 assists for 28 points. Dahlstrand enters her senior year ranked fifth in career goals scored with 23 and sixth in

career points with 54. Karisa Fernandez has a bright future after fin ishing as the secondleading scorer with 7 goals and 2 assists for 16 points her freshman year. “Rachel Dahlstrand is a big key for us,” admitted Kagiavas. “Karisa Fernandez and Jenna Madison are other scorers for us. We brought in six forwards last year that were freshman. They will compete harder this year and be stronger.” In addition to Fernandez and Madison, Cassie Kiplinger looks to make her mark at forward. She redshirted a year ago. Freshman Katherine Faller is another option at forward.

Midfielders The midfield appears solid with Jess Morgan, Taylor Stetka and Melissa Leszek returning. Morgan, a junior, started all 19 matches and earned second team AllPSAC West accolades. She contributed a pair of assists. Stetka, a junior, also contributed two assists while starting 15 con tests. Both enter their third year as starters. Leszek is a former transfer from Indiana(Pa.) who finished as the thirdleading scorer with 3 goals and 4 assists for 10 points while starting 15 times. “Jess Morgan, Taylor Stetka and Melissa Leszek are hardworking, experienced and ready to score for us,” predicted Kagiavas. “In the past two years our midfield has not scored much. We expect more from them. Also, Catherine Messmer and Amanda Bartell came on strong during the spring and we hope they will be able to significant ly contribute this fall.” Messmer played in 18 matches as a fresh man, while Bartell finished with 3 goals in 2009 while appearing in all 19 matches, with seven starts. Amber McLaughlin could also see time in the midfield, although she will also compete for time at goalkeeper. A junior, she contributed 4 goals and 4 assists as a freshman but was limited to 2 goals a year ago. Senior Brittanie Bidak has seen limited time while battling injuries the last two years. Sophomore Nicole Hoffman provides further depth.

Defenders Junior midfielder Jess Morgan earned second team AllPSAC West honors in 2009.

The defense needs to rebuild with starters Lauren Christy and Maria Dembrow gone. Between them the duo started 124 games in their career.

2010 Season Preview “This is the position we lost the most players in,” Kagiavas commented. “Jamie Warren and Steph Tighe played extremely well together this spring. On the right side, Devyn Agett has started for three years. I’m hoping Kelsey Knoll, a transfer from Kent State, and freshman Angela Deblassio and Chelsea Medalis can contribute quickly.” Warren was a second team AllPSAC West selection a year ago after starting all 19 matches, with one assist. Tighe also had an assist while playing mainly in a reserve role as a freshman. She did start four contests. Agett, a senior, has started 46 matches in her career and is a season veteran. Knoll appeared in six matches while playing at Kent State last year. Sophomore Casey Rogozinski is another returnee seeking time at defender. She played in seven matches last year, with a pair of starts.

Goalkeepers Kate Stukbauer provides the Fighting Scots with an experienced goalkeeper. The junior start ed 16 matches a year ago, totaling 5.5 shutouts and a 1.20 goals against average. Lindsay Hampy, a transfer from Mercyhurst North East, and McLaughlin are expected to push Stukbauer. Kagiavas notes that McLaughlin, who is normally a midfielder and played just 22 minutes in goal, looked solid in the spring.

Junior Jamie Warren, a 2009 second team All PSAC West selection, spearheads a young defense.

This is Edinboro University

E

dinboro University is the region’s largest and most comprehensive institution of higher edu cation. Under the leadership of President Jeremy D. Brown, who assumed the helm on July 1, 2007, Edinboro adopted the motto, “Great Things Happen Here!” Yet the words represent much more than a tagline or catchy phrase. They reflect upon a changing and growing University that strives for excellence regionally, nationally and globally. Founded more than 150 years ago by the descendants of Scottish immigrants, Edinboro’s beau tiful 585acre campus is now home to more than 8,700 students enrolled in over 100 undergraduate and grad uate programs of study. Rich in its Scottish tradition, the University’s majors in art, animation, criminal jus tice, education, and speech language pathology have earned regional recognition and national accolades. Situated almost equal distance (about 100 miles) from the cultural, entertainment and major league sports metropolitan areas of Cleveland, Buffalo and Pittsburgh, Edinboro is less than 20 miles south of Erie, Pennsylvania’s fourth largest city, and 20 miles north of Meadville, the Crawford County seat. Edinboro’s BaronForness Library has more than 500,000 bound volumes and 1.4 million micro form units, along with an online catalog access to numerous databases and electronic reserves and archives. The library, the region’s largest, is equipped with a wireless network, commuter labs and is accessible to users with visual impairments. Edinboro’s physical plant and resources are beginning to rival the faculty excellence that stu dents have long found in the classrooms. The University is drawing more people to campus because of its state of the art facilities. An investment of $200 million is allowing the

Edinboro Women’s Soccer 2010

University to enhance the Edinboro experience for stu dents through projects such as the new suitestyle student hous ing complex known as The Highlands at Edinboro University. The $5 million Zafirovski Sports & Recreation Arena opened in late 2009, meaning athletic teams can hold full practice sessions during inclement weather inside the region’s largest freestanding, airsupported facility. The new $5 million Human Services Building will be ready for classes in January 2011 and the $23 million expansion and renovation of the Cooper Hall science building is underway. In addition to the fiveacre Mallory Lake and ample pastoral and wooded areas, there are more than 40 other buildings on the spacious Edinboro campus, including residence halls with private or shared rooms, coed housing, honors housing and livinglearning floors for academic and special inter est student groups. Van Houten Dining Hall offers a variety of student meal plans, and Skipjack’s fast food emporium is perfect for an energybooster at any time. Edinboro’s School of Graduate Studies and Research, with it’s technologybased computer assisted distance learning, now offers the region’s fastest growing academic programs. Edinboro University in Erie – The Porreco Center, is a beautiful 27acre campus that includes classrooms, computer laboratory and a unique facili ty for hosting small conferences, business meetings and special events. Edinboro University in Meadville is located in the city’s historic Bessemer Building. All Edinboro University facilities are connected by free EMTA bus service. In fact, in this new era of high fuel costs, students, faculty and staff can ride free anywhere EMTA bus service is offered! So you can see that Edinboro University of Pennsylvania, home of the Fighting Scots NCAA ath letic teams and firstclass athletic venues, offers the complete collegiate experience for undergraduate and graduate students. What’s more, Edinboro’s faculty and staff of 800 individuals working as a single team to support our students’ higher education aspirations, under score our new motto. It’s true! Great things do hap pen here!
