xcellence in coaching and a winning tradition are terms that have become syn onymous with Edinboro University cross country and track and field coach Doug Watts. Since his arrival at Edinboro in 1969, the Running Scots have experienced nothing but success, producing numerous AllAmericans and team championships, as well as four individual cross country champions and five individual track first place finishers. Watts' coaching credentials speak for themselves, including 37 consecutive undefeat ed cross country seasons and a string of over 132 straight dual meet victories. Watts' squads have also produced a total of six national cham pionships, including backtobacktoback NCAA Division II titles from 1986 through 1988 and backtoback NAIA titles in 1975 and 1976. His teams can also boast six Division II runnerup trophies, plus finishes of third (twice), fourth (three times), fifth, sixth (twice), seventh (three times), eighth (three times) and ninth. In total, the men's squads have 17 top ten finishes at the national meet in the last 26 years. His women's program, though yet to crown a national champion, has also estab lished itself as one of the premier programs in the NCAA East Region and on the national stage. That includes nine PSAC championships in the last 11 years and three East Regional titles in the last six years. Five years ago the Fighting Scot women’s harriers placed second at Nationals. As a result, an "uncountable" amount of conference, district, and regional "Coach of the Year" awards are scattered throughout his office. He was inducted into the Edinboro Hall of Fame in 2004, and in 2009 was inducted into the Northwest Pennsylvania Sports Hall of

Fame. Two years ago, Watts was presented the Jimmy Carnes Distinguished Service Award, presented by the USTFCCCA. Finally, Watts was selected for induction into the USTFCCCA Hall of Fame, and was inducted last December. In 2007 he was recognized as the PSAC Men’s Cross Country Coach of the Year. The National Coach of the Year five times, Watts has published numerous distancerun ning articles for national publications. Twice an Olympic coach nominee, Watts annually con ducts a summer preseason endurance training camp, the Edinboro Distance Village, for young men and women. In addition, 16 of his Edinboro athletes have been U.S. Olympic Trial qualifiers. Most recently, Watts has ventured into the administrative portion of his sport, as the past President of the NCAA Division II Track and Field Coaches Association and former Vice President of the USTCA National Coaches Association. In addition, he was the head of the NCAA Division II Cross Country Hall of Fame Committee and presently is on the Board of Directors for the USTFCCCA (U.S. Track & Field Cross Country Coaches Association). A 1964 graduate of the University of Akron with a degree in Health and Physical Education, Watts began his coaching career at Walsh Jesuit High School in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio. He intro duced a running program at Walsh Jesuit that yielded a twoyear record of 190 and a district championship. Watts and his wife Margaret reside in Edinboro and have two adult children, Wendy and Christopher.

Edinboro cross coun try and track & field coach Doug Watts has received plenty of recognition during his 42 years as the head coach of the Fighting Scots. Here are some of the recent instances. Above, Watts received the Jimmy Carnes Distinguished Service Award. The award was presented at the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association Convention in December 2009. 2011 Men’s Preview The

2011 PSAC and NCAA II Atlantic Regional Cross Country Championship should be, according to preseason voting, the closest races in history. Edinboro, which barely ‘won’ the presea son poll for top team in conference and is ranked by the USTFCCCA national polls is ‘overrated’ according to their coach, Doug Watts. “We probably earned a vote or two on tra ditional rather than substantive information,” Watts said. Still, Edinboro, Lock Haven and Shippensburg are in the hunt for the biggest tro phy and Watts can’t deny his team’s chances to win them all. Last season was a bit of an anomaly in the Fighting Scots’ cross country history. For the first time in 31 seasons, Edinboro failed to quali fy as a team for the NCAA Division II Championships. The Fighting Scots finished third at the 2010 PSAC Championships at the NCAA Atlantic Regional. Returning is the PSAC individual champion and 2010 AllAmerican Scott Anderson, a proven lowpoint scorer. A strong, competitive athlete,

Scott Anderson

Page 4

Anderson brings guaranteed frontrunning to his team. “I want to control my season better this year and really make a performance jump at sea son’s end,” the talented junior said. Anderson earned the Fighting Scots’ first PSAC individual championship in 10 years last season. Following a runnerup finish at the NCAA Atlantic Regional, Anderson was Edinboro’s sole representative at the NCAA Division II Championships, where he finished 18th and became the Fighting Scots’ 40th All American. Two seniors figure enormously in the Scots’ success. Garth Watson must move up to top 10 material in his last campaign. Jake Krolick has the potential to make significant scoring impact as demonstrated by his previous level of performance. Watson earned AllPSAC honors in 2010 and placed 15th at the Atlantic Regional, while Krolick finished 34th at the conference championships and 18th at the Atlantic Regional. Junior Sean Naderer could be the key to Edinboro’s chances of victory. An All Conference and AllRegional runner, Naderer must overcome a spotty track season in 2011 and regain his confidence and his very efficient run ning style. Watts is impressed with sophomore Bryan Deibel. A surprise as a freshman, Deibel made the top eight on a good Boro team. He has shown much improvement early in training camp. A very solid group of underclassmen will vie to be included in Edinboro’s big meet entries. Junior Dustin Thomas just missed out on earning AllPSAC honors by finishing 21st at the confer ence championships in 2010. Sophomores Jordan Roose, a PSAC runner up in the 2011 steeplechase, and Bryan Baumgartner, a PSAC scorer in the 1,500, have an inside edge for these spots. Classmates Dylan Stevens, Mike Thielman, Alex Beardsley, Bart Eckel and Owen Venesky have shown potential to be included. A couple of redshirt freshmen in Matt Link, Tim McConnell and Evan Miller await testing. Dan Blackman will be a factor in the fall as well. “Our goal is to win the conference and regional meets, make no mistakes,” Watts said. “I know we have the depth, but do we have the leaders, physically and mentally, that’s the ques tion.” In the long run, time will tell.

2011 Women’s Preview A very successful preseason camp buoyed the

usually pessimistic Coach Doug Watts into pre dicting his 2011 team will qualify for the NCAA II National Cross Country championships in Spokane, Wash. later this year. “The women demonstrated a wonderful team chemistry, they were competitive, yet individual ly supportive this preseason,” Watts said. During the preseason, the Fighting Scots were selected to finish second in the PSAC behind threetime defending PSAC and Atlantic Regional champion Shippensburg. Gone is Tina Yi, the only nonreturner from the top 15 nationallyranked team of 2010. Yi earned AllPSAC and AllAtlantic Regional hon ors last season while leading Edinboro to a run nerup finish at the PSAC Championships and a fourthplace result at the NCAA Atlantic Regional. However great that loss, the veteran coach thinks he has someone who can fill those shoes. Kacey Gibson, a Florida State transfer in her first Edinboro cross country season, ran the second fastest end of camp half marathon in program history, displacing several past AllAmericans on the list.Gibson also gained experience running on the Fighting Scots’ track and field team this past spring. Sophomore Monica Ciarniello has sparkled early in the fall despite a summer layoff to heal a stress fracture suffered during track season. She just missed out on AllPSAC accolades in 2010 by finishing 21st at the conference champi onships. She also placed 32nd at the NCAA Atlantic Regional. Junior Brittany Kaltenbaugh, coming off the best training summer of her life, has the potential to break up the lead runners. Danielle Cerroni is the only senior of the squad and is one her coach feels can be counted upon to give her best. Cerroni, who has earned AllRegional honors in the past, needs to repeat for Edinboro to be guaranteed trophies. In 2010, Cerroni earned AllPSAC honors by finishing 15th at the PSAC Championships and placed 26th at the NCAA Atlantic Regional. Continued improvement showcases junior Hannah Kucewicz. An excellent track runner, she will be a strong scorer for this year’s team. Sophomore Liz Budzinski has completed her first summer of mileage running and is primed to be better than her initial year and will add con sistency to her performances.

Edinboro Cross Country 2011

Watts points out that a couple of freshmen could find themselves in the top seven – notably Kasey Jones, in her first season of cross country ever. Megan Maffet and Noelle Jurcak could compete with sophomore Allison Gibbens for a conference starting spot. Star freshman recruit Emily Ahrens, a multi time allstate selection in her native Florida, has found the countryside around Edinboro much more challenging than her coastal home. Ahrens finished third at the Florida High School Cross Country Championships and sixth in the 1,600meter run at the track and field championships as a senior. The talented incoming freshman class, as well as the returning runners, will need to make some adjustments if they are to achieve their goal of reaching Nationals.

National Champions Dave Antognoli -- 1971 National Champion David Antognoli was head coach Doug Watts' first recruit back in 1969. Antognoli is, according to Watts, the reason Edinboro became creditable on the national level, and helped lay the foundation for the successful program that exists today. The recruiting classes of 197273 followed in the foot steps of Antognoli and led to Edinboro's six national team titles. Antognoli won a multitude of individual titles, including three national titles, and many All American certificates in cross country and track. He was awarded the Sox Harrison Award as the top male senior athlete in 1973 after winning the cross country championship in 1971, the NAIA 10,000 meters title in 1972, and the USTFF national champi onship in the six mile event. He also was the top col legiate finisher in the 1972 Olympic Trials.

Greg Beardsley -- 1982 National Champion In 1982, in a brutal combination of calfdeep snow, 20degree temperatures, and a chilling wind, the crowd at the finish line of the 1982 NCAA Division II championships in St. Cloud, Minnesota was barely able to make out the faint outline of Greg Beardsley, who crossed the finish line in a record 60.9 seconds before the rest of the field to win the national championship. Beardsley recalls his experi ences as “great, but very cold!” Beardsley won the Sox Harrison Award as the top male senior athlete in April 1983 and was multiple U.S. Olympic Trials scorer.

National Champions Martin Lyons -- 1991 National Champion Martin Lyons was attracted to Edinboro due to the strength and reputation of the Running Scots pro gram. The Melbourne, Australia native had no trouble adapting to his move across the globe, winning the 1991 NCAA Division II individual cross country title as a freshman. Though he came to the United States with little cross country experience, coach Doug Watts expect ed AllAmerican honors from the Aussie on the merit of his track credentials. Lyons would go on to claim cross country AllAmerican honors in each of his four seasons at Edinboro. Only two other runners have accomplished this feat since. An eighttime AllAmerican in cross country and track, Lyons was the NCAA East Regional recordhold er in cross country, and also hold the school record in the marathon with a time of 2:21:35, set back in 1995.

Yi Min Wu -- 1998 National Champion Yi Min Wu became Edinboro’s fourth national cham pion after he won the 1998 national meet by a 10sec ond margin with a time of 31:06.60. Wu did not lose a race throughout his freshman season. A sixtime AllAmerican in cross country and track, Wu was recognized as both the PSAC and NCAA East Regional ‘Runner of the Year’ in 1998 an ‘99. He was the 1999 national track and field runnerup in the 10,000 meters in addition to winning the PSAC 10,000 meter championship. Wu earned his second All American certificate in track by also placing sixth in the 5,000 meter run as a freshman. Wu is one of three runners to earn AllAmerican honors four times in cross country. Finally, Wu was named the PSAC Rookie of the Year in track and field as a freshman.

Edinboro’s Cross Country Philosophy "Generally, we attract the middle distance and distance athlete who is seeking a special envi ronment for running," says head coach Doug Watts about his track and cross country programs at Edinboro University. “A studentathlete should consider Edinboro because of the following rea sons”: 1. A small school setting, academically oriented, that generally allows for a fuller personal devel opment in the classroom, athletic and social activities; yet offers a large, diversified choice of educational majors and specialties. 2. A TEAM concept in training competition. 3. A distancebased training program integrating selected road races as a training supplement. 4. Division I schedule of intercollegiate competition. 5. A program that allows personal direction and individualism, a proper balance between acade mics and athletics... and fun. 6. A tradition of excellence and proven success in running within an environment supportive and respectful of distance runners.

This is Edinboro University

Edinboro University is the region’s largest

and most comprehensive institution of higher edu cation. Our motto – “Great Things Happen Here!” – repre sents much more than a mere tagline or catch phrase. It reflects upon a changing, growing and thriving University that strives for excellence region ally, nationally and globally, and, under Interim President Jim Moran is entirely studentcentered. Founded more than 150 years ago by descendants of Scottish immigrants, Edinboro’s beautiful 585 acre campus is now home to more than 8,000 students enrolled in over 100 undergraduate and graduate programs of study. Rich in its Scottish traditions, the University’s majors in art, animation, criminal justice, education, nursing and speech language pathology have earned region al recognition and national accolades. Situated almost equal distance (about 100 miles) from the cultural, entertainment and major league sports metropolitan areas of Cleveland, Buffalo and Pittsburgh, Edinboro is less than 20 miles south of Erie, Pennsylvania’s fourth largest city, and 20 miles north of Meadville, Crawford County’s seat. Edinboro’s BaronForness Library has more than 500,000 bound volumes and 1.4 million microform units, along with an online catalog access to numer ous databases and electronic reserves and archives. The library, the region’s largest, is equipped with a wireless network, commuter labs and is accessible to users with visual impairments. The library and all University facilities provide the highest level of accessibility for students with disabilities. In that regard, Edinboro is nationally recognized. Edinboro’s extensive physical plant and resources now rival the faculty excellence that students have long found in the classrooms. Edinboro’s stateof theart facilities are among the finest in higher edu cation. An investment of more than $200 million in new construction and renovation has allowed the University to enhance for students what we call “The Edinboro Experience” through myriad projects such as the new suitestyle Highlands at Edinboro University student housing complex, the ongoing

$29 million Cooper Hall science building expansion, and the new Jeremy D. Brown Human Services Building housing the Nursing and Speech, Language & Hearing Departments. The Zafirovski Sports & Recreation Center allows athletic teams to hold full practice sessions during inclement weather inside the region’s largest freestanding, airsupported facility. In addition to the fiveacre Mallory Lake and ample pastoral and wooded areas, more than 40 buildings dot Edinboro’s spacious campus, including residence halls with private or shared rooms, honors housing and living/learning areas for academic and special interest student groups. Van Houten Dining Hall offers a variety of student meal plans, and various fastfood emporiums are perfect venues for energy boosters. Edinboro’s School of Graduate Studies and Research, with its technologybased computer assisted distance learning, now offers the region’s fastest growing academic programs at the graduate level. Edinboro’s new School of Business expands upon the University’s educational opportunities for students. But there’s more! Edinboro University in Erie – The Porreco Center, is a beautiful 27acre campus that includes classrooms, computer laboratory and a unique facility for hosting small conferences, busi ness meetings and special events. Edinboro University in Meadville – The Joseph T. Buba Center, is located in the city’s historic Bessemer Building. All Edinboro University locations are connected by free Erie Metropolitan Transportation Authority bus ser vice. In fact, in an era of high fuel costs, students, faculty and staff ride free anywhere EMTA bus ser vice is offered! So you can see that Edinboro University, home of the Fighting Scots’ NCAA athletic teams and first class athletic venues, offers the complete collegiate experience – “The Edinboro Experience” – for undergraduate and graduate students. Edinboro’s faculty and staff of 850 individuals work ing as a single team to support our students’ higher education aspirations and successes indeed under score our motto. It’s true! Great things do happen here!
