Fighting Scots Excel in the Classroom Yearin and yearout the Edinboro University women’s soccer team has come to set the standard in the classroom. Yearin and yearout the team ranks among the best at Edinboro in the classroom. The spring of 2011 was no different, as the Fightings Scots posted a team GPA of over 3.00 for the spring semes ter.

Fighting Scots capped it with their firstever post season victory. Kagiavas was honored as the PSAC West Coach of the Year. It marked the third time he had received the honor, along with 2001 and 2005. Hosting Indiana(Pa.) in the first round of the PSAC Tournament, Edinboro handed the Crimson Hawks a 31 defeat. Slippery Rock brought Edinboro’s season to a halt with a 20 victory in the semifinals. It marked the fourth time Edinboro had qualified for the PSAC Playoffs. The 2003 Fighting Scots had registered the previous school record for wins while finishing with a 1271 record. Edinboro made its second appear ance in the PSAC Playoffs. The Fighting Scots climbed as high as fourth in the Northeast Region rankings during the year. In 2002 Edinboro fell one point shy of qualifying for postseason action, com piling a 954 record. Kagiavas' teams accomplished a rarity in his first six seasons, finishing with a better record each year. The 2001 Fighting Scots went out and posted an 1151 record, including a schoolrecord sixgame winning streak. The Fighting Scots advanced to the PSAC Playoffs for the first time. Edinboro dropped a 10 decision to Bloomsburg in its first postseason venture, but that could not diminish a season which saw the Scots climb as high as 14th in the NSCAA Division II rankings. Along the way, the Scots defeated 13thranked Slippery Rock 30, while suffering four of its five losses to nationallyranked opponents. Thanks to five wins in its final seven contests, Edinboro posted its first winning season in 2000, going 1081. The Fighting Scots had a fourgame

ary Kagiavas was appointed Edinboro University's first head coach of the Fighting Scot women's soccer program in August of 1996. The former Gannon University standout started the Edinboro pro gram that year, and since that time it has become one of the stronger teams in the Atlantic Region. In his 15 seasons as head coach, Kagiavas has guided the Fighting Scots to a 12812425 record. Edinboro comes off one of its top seasons, as the Fighting Scots finished with an 1161 record, qualify ing for the PSAC playoffs for the fifth time. In fact, had it not been for the NCAA’s “earned access” policy Edinboro would have made its firstever appearance in the NCAA Playoffs, as the Fighting Scots ranked sixth in the final Atlantic Region poll. Edinboro lost to Kutztown in the first round of the PSAC Tournament. Head Coach win streak in which it held opponents scoreless for 500 minutes. The team also recorded the pro gram's first win over local rival Gannon. The Fighting Scots weren't without their growing pains, as Edinboro's firstever women's soccer edition finished with a 2140 record in 1996. The ledger improved slightly in 1997, as Kagiavas' second team posted a 5101 finish. The Fighting Scots improved to 9100 in 1998. That included a 21 overtime win over West Virginia Wesleyan, an out fit ranked second in Division II at the time. In 1999 the Fighting Scots posted a 991 finish to post their first nonlosing season. Edinboro debuted in the regional rankings during the season, a first for Kagiavas's squad. Included in the victories was another triumph over a nationallyranked foe, as the Fighting Scots posted a 21 win at 14th ranked Slippery Rock. Edinboro saw a run of five straight winning seasons come to an end four years ago following a 693 finish, and his Fighting Scots suffered a sec ond straight losing campaign in 2005, finishing at 7 93. However, thanks to a 532 ledger in the PSAC West, Edinboro made its thirdever appearance in the PSAC Playoffs. Kagiavas brought a wealth of coaching expe rience to Edinboro, both locally and at the interna tional level. He joined the Edinboro staff after serv ing as assistant manager of the Family First Sports Park in Erie for two years. At Family First, he was responsible for organizing all phases of the facility's indoor and outdoor soccer leagues. Kagiavas has served as the coaching director of the Edinboro Regional Soccer Club. Under his direction, the organization has grown from four to 14 teams. In the 199798 season, he took the 15 under team to the state finals. In recent years he has taken the Erie Admirals U17 Girls team to the state championship and to the Final Four of Region 1. The team has finished in the top 16 in the country in their age group. He is the girls coaching director at the Erie Admirals. In 2004 Kagiavas had two more state champions with the Erie Admirals in the Under17 and Under18 girls teams. That marked four state champions in four years. Kagiavas was a standout defender at Gannon from 198791, and played professionally in his native South Africa, along with Greece and Canada, after earning his bachelor's degree in 1991. He has held a variety of coaching positions in many levels of com petition since 1989, highlighted by a successful stint as a professional coach in South Africa. At Gannon, Kagiavas was a fouryear starter at midfield and defender for a Golden Knight team which advanced to the NCAA Division II Final Four in 1989 and 1990. Gannon was 58148 during his four seasons, with three NCAA playoff appearances. Kagiavas played professionally for a St.

Catherines team that won the Canadian Cup in the National Soccer League. He was a player/coach for the Springs Old Boys and Boksburg 'Two for Joy,' as well as for the Eastern Transvaal allselect indoor team. In 1994, Kagiavas served as the head coach of Gannon's men's junior varsity soccer program, also assisting with the varsity squad as the Golden Knight men posted a 1520 record and advanced to the NCAA Final Four. Kagiavas began his coaching career with the Erie Strikers while also directing the Villa Maria Elementary School team. In the spring of 1992, Kagiavas was assistant coach of the Boksburg "Two for Joy" Division I team that competed in the National Soccer League of South Africa. In the sum mer of 1991, he was the head coach of the Springs (South Africa) Old Boys of the Division II men's semiprofessional league, earning Coach of the Year honors. Kagiavas has earned a South African coaching license, a professional referee license, and his United States Soccer Federation National B License and has his NSCAA Regional Coaching License. He has become heavily involved in the administrative side of the sport. He serves as the Northeast Regional chair for the NSCAA, and is also the PSAC chair for womens soccer and a member of the NCAA Division II Atlantic Region committee. He and his wife, Dawn, a native of St. Marys, Pa., reside in Fairview with their 14yearold daugh ter, Kaylee.

fter con cluding a brilliant career at Edinboro University with a recordbreaking season as a senior in 2003, Jamie Sallie is now in her seventh season as an assistant coach for the Fighting Scots. She has played an integral role assisting head coach Gary Kagiavas with the program’s success during that period. As a senior, Sallie, then Jamie Tekotte, set school records for goals scored (21) and points (48) in a season. She was a first team All Northeast Region and AllPSAC selection. In addition, she ranked second in the PSAC in points, points per game, goals, and goals per game, and was 13th in Division II in goals per game and 15th in points per game. Sallie concluded her career ranked first in goals scored (37) and second in career points (85) despite playing just three seasons for the Fighting Scots. She played at Central Michigan as a freshman.

2011 Season Preview Fighting Scots Look to Take Next Step and Challenge for PSAC Title, NCAA Berth

The Edinboro University women’s soccer team enjoyed one of its finest seasons in school history a year ago, finishing with an 1161 record. The Fighting Scots qualified for the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference playoffs for the fifth time, and for the first time since 2007. The only real disappointing part of the cam paign, save for the PSAC playoff loss to Kutztown, was the failure to make the NCAA Division II Playoffs. The Fighting Scots were ranked sixth in the Atlantic Region, good enough to qualify for the final spot, but they were denied to the NCAA’s “earned access” policy. Now Gary Kagiavas, in his 16th season as Edinboro’s lone head coach, enters the 2011 sea son feeling he has put together a team that can challenge for postseason action once again. “We have a great nucleus of players return ing, including eight starters,” stressed Kagiavas. “We also have a terrific recruiting class coming in. I believe we will be good enough to compete with all the PSAC schools, but results are difficult to come by in the PSAC and we hope the freshmen can make an immediate impact. That will deter mine how far we go.” Despite a strong returning nucleus, the Fighting Scots must replace several key perform ers, including Rachel Dahlstrand, the team’s sec ondleading scorer a year ago and the fifth alltime scorer. “We did not lose much in terms of numbers from last year, but we did lose a lot in character and leadership,” admitted Kagiavas. “All four seniors were players that gave us different aspects. The athleticism of Rachel Dahlstrand and Devyn Agett, the versatility of Melissa Leszek and the creativity of Brittanie Bidak will all be missed. We believe we have replaced some of their abili ties with incoming freshmen, but we’ll be looking for leadership from the players that are still in the program. “ Kagiavas feels his Fighting Scots can afford the loss of such key players thanks to the depth he has built up in recent years. “Depth is definitely a strength for us this year,” he pointed out. “Also, the development of players such as Kelsey Knoll, Casey Rogodzinski, Catherine Messmer really helps. They were fringe players who stepped up this spring and are now ready to contribute. Several freshmen are expected to contribute immediately.”

Edinboro Women’s Soccer 2011

Like any coach, Kagiavas has plenty of con cerns. The loss of the four seniors could leave a void in leadership. In addition, two of those play ers were outside defenders who started many of the attacks, leaving Kagiavas to wait until presea son drills to see who fills those roles. However, Kagiavas’ biggest concern is one he has no control over. That is the rigors of a bru tal PSAC and his schedule in general. Three PSAC squads were listed in the NSCAA Preseason Top 25 – West Chester (4th), California(Pa.) (12th) and Slippery Rock (24th) – with Bloomsburg among “others receiving votes”. “Our schedule is absolutely ridiculous,” bemoaned Kagiavas. “We may be 91 or we may be 19 after September. We have so many early

2011 Season Preview away games. The challenge is to try and get results early to stay in the PSAC hunt. We open with Ashland, a very talented team. Then we play Wheeling Jesuit, who we beat last year but really have a terrific squad returning. Then it gets worse with Bloomsburg, East Stroudsburg, Gannon, Kutztown and Indiana, all on the road. “Of course, the home games aren’t easy either with us hosting only Mercyhurst, West Chester and Millersville. This may be our toughest schedule home and away and with leadership being a concern … Things may go awry very early. It is important to focus on one game at a time and just try to get one result at a time. As always the PSAC is much improved and is one of the tough est, most physical conferences in the country.” Kagiavas added that ultimately Edinboro needs the freshmen to grow up quick and the upperclassmen to steer the team through “chop py waters” early. “It is going to be a challenge. You never

know when you will get your next win in the PSAC,” he concluded.

Forwards Without question the Fighting Scots will miss Rachel Dahlstrand, who in three years climbed to fifth in alltime scoring and finished with 7 goals and 3 assists for 17 points a year ago. However, in Karisa Fernandez and Jenna Madison the Scots have a strong returning core. Fernandez, in particular, rates as one of the top scorers in the PSAC. A year ago the junior finished as the team’s leading scorer with 10 goals and 4 assists for 24 points. She ranked eighth in the con ference in both goals and scoring. She enters the 2011 campaign ranked ninth at Edinboro in goals scored (17) and 11th in career points (40). She was a second team AllPSAC selection and also earned NSCAA AllAtlantic Region second team accolades. Madison, another junior, finished with 2 goals and 3 assists while appearing in all 18 matches. She started twice. The attack should receive a huge boost with the addition of Samantha Kaiser. Kaiser played three seasons at Duquesne. In 46 career matches she contributed 11 goals and 6 assists for 28 points. In 2009, her final season with the Dukes, Kaiser ranked second in goals with five. Kagiavas also expects sophomore Cassee Kiplinger and freshman Elizabeth Debo to con tribute up front. Kiplinger saw action in seven matches last year, finishing with a pair of goals and 3 assists, before suffering a torn ACL and miss ing the rest of the season. Debo was a WPIAL All Star as a senior at Norwin High School. Versatile Amber McLaughlin will see action both at forward and on defense. The senior saw time last year all over, including in goal. She has played in 54 career matches, with 7 goals and 4 assists. Emma Ryanmiller, a fifth team AllState selection a year ago at Cooperstown(NY) Central High School, provides further depth.

Midfielders

Senior midfielder Jess Morgan is a twotime AllPSAC selection.

Edinboro Women’s Soccer 2011

The midfield showcases plenty of experience in seniors Jess Morgan and Taylor Stetka, along with juniors Amanda Bartell and Catherine Messmer. Morgan has started 54 matches and Stetka 43, while Bartell started all 18 matches and Messmer 17 matches last year. Morgan earned third team AllPSAC honors last year and was a second team pick as a sopho

2011 Season Preview more. She scored 2 goals and had 3 assists. Stetka is a key player as a defensive midfielder, as is Messmer. Bartell finished fourth in scoring with 3 goals and 3 assists for 9 points. Junior Kelsey Knoll figures to see extensive action. A former transfer from Kent State, she played in 15 matches a year ago as a reserve, with a goal and an assist. Nicole Hoffman, a junior, appeared in five matches last year and will once again provide depth in the midfield. Freshmen Becca Costello and Allyson Overly will look to break into the midfield. Costello was one of the key players on a Mercyhurst Prep team which won the PIAA state championship last year. An AllState selection, she set a PIAA record with 45 goals as a senior and scored 64 for her career. Overly also earned AllState recognition while play ing at Springdale(Pa.) High School.

Goalkeepers Kate Stukbauer is the returning starter in goal and comes off her best season. The senior started all 18 matches and finished with a 1.25 goals against average. She finished with 5.5 shutouts. Stukbauer enters her final year tied for second in career shutouts with 11 and is fifth in career wins with 17. Freshman Meghan Kelly looks to push the senior for playing time. An AllWPIAL selection at Mars Area High School, she won 61 career match es and had 44 shutouts. Another freshman, Mary Murray from nearby Cambridge Springs High School, provides further depth.

Defenders Jamie Warren and Steph Tighe anchor a defense that limited opponents to just 24 goals a year ago and helped record six shutouts. Warren, a senior, has started 40 matches in her career and was a 2009 second team AllPSAC West choice. A year ago she started all 18 matches, finishing as the thirdleading scorer with 4 goals and 3 assists for 11 points. Tighe started four matches as a freshman then stepped in last year as a fulltime starter. Casey Rogozinski, another junior, looks to move up after appearing in six matches a year ago, with one assist. Sophomore Kelley McKeown is also available after playing in 12 matches. A host of newcomers will push to fill out the defense. Leading the way are three freshmen – Lauralee Clement, Ashley DeVito and Kaitlynn Moore. Clement is from nearby Linesville High School, where she was a foursport standout. DeVito earned AllSection honors while playing at Penn Hills High School, and Moore was an All Section pick at Tonawanda(NY) High School. Rachel Graham is a transfer from Indiana(Pa.) who saw limited action for the Crimson Hawks but was a former standout at nearby Fairview High School. She hopes to push for playing time in her first season as a Fighting Scot.

This is Edinboro University

Edinboro University is the region’s largest and most comprehensive institution of higher education. Our motto – “Great Things Happen Here!” – repre sents much more than a mere tagline or catchphrase. It reflects upon a changing, growing and thriving University that strives for excellence regionally, nation ally and globally, and, under Interim President Jim Moran is entirely studentcentered. Founded more than 150 years ago by descen dants of Scottish immigrants, Edinboro’s beautiful 585 acre campus is now home to more than 8,000 stu dents enrolled in over 100 undergraduate and gradu ate programs of study. Rich in its Scottish traditions, the University’s majors in art, animation, criminal jus tice, education, nursing and speech language patholo gy have earned regional recognition and national acco lades. Situated almost equal distance (about 100 miles) from the cultural, entertainment and major league sports metropolitan areas of Cleveland, Buffalo and Pittsburgh, Edinboro is less than 20 miles south of Erie, Pennsylvania’s fourth largest city, and 20 miles north of Meadville, Crawford County’s seat. Edinboro’s BaronForness Library has more than 500,000 bound volumes and 1.4 million microform units, along with an online catalog access to numerous databases and electronic reserves and archives. The library, the region’s largest, is equipped with a wireless network, commuter labs and is accessible to users with visual impairments. The library and all University facilities provide the highest level of accessibility for students with disabilities. In that regard, Edinboro is nationally recognized. Edinboro’s extensive physical plant and resources now rival the faculty excellence that stu dents have long found in the classrooms. Edinboro’s stateoftheart facilities are among the finest in higher education. An investment of more than $200 million in new construction and renovation has allowed the University to enhance for students what we call “The Edinboro Experience” through myriad projects such as

the new suitestyle Highlands at Edinboro University student housing complex, the ongoing $29 million Cooper Hall science building expansion, and the new Jeremy D. Brown Human Services Building housing the Nursing and Speech, Language & Hearing Departments. The Zafirovski Sports & Recreation Center allows athletic teams to hold full practice ses sions during inclement weather inside the region’s largest freestanding, airsupported facility. In addition to the fiveacre Mallory Lake and ample pastoral and wooded areas, more than 40 buildings dot Edinboro’s spacious campus, including residence halls with private or shared rooms, honors housing and living/learning areas for academic and special inter est student groups. Van Houten Dining Hall offers a variety of student meal plans, and various fastfood emporiums are perfect venues for energyboosters. Edinboro’s School of Graduate Studies and Research, with its technologybased computerassist ed distance learning, now offers the region’s fastest growing academic programs at the graduate level. Edinboro’s new School of Business expands upon the University’s educational opportunities for students. But there’s more! Edinboro University in Erie – The Porreco Center, is a beautiful 27acre campus that includes classrooms, computer laboratory and a unique facility for hosting small conferences, business meetings and special events. Edinboro University in Meadville – The Joseph T. Buba Center, is located in the city’s historic Bessemer Building. All Edinboro University locations are connected by free Erie Metropolitan Transportation Authority bus service. In fact, in an era of high fuel costs, students, faculty and staff ride free anywhere EMTA bus service is offered! So you can see that Edinboro University, home of the Fighting Scots’ NCAA athletic teams and firstclass ath letic venues, offers the complete collegiate experience – “The Edinboro Experience” – for undergraduate and graduate students. Edinboro’s faculty and staff of 850 individuals working as a single team to support our students’ higher edu cation aspirations and successes indeed underscore our motto. It’s true! Great things do happen here!
