Head Coach
Missy Soboleski 7th Year Gannon ‘93
M
issy Soboleski was hired as head volleyball coach at Edinboro University on February 3, 2005. Soboleski replaced Dale Flickinger, who was hired on an interim basis in late July to replace Lynn Theehs, who went to the University of Maine. All told, Soboleski has led Edinboro to five NCAA Division II Atlantic Region playoff berths in six years, along with trips to the PSAC Playoffs five times. She owns a 15272 record as Edinboro's head coach. Her teams have won at least 23 matches in five of her six seasons. Soboleski has won 285 career matches, good for 41st in Division II in career victories. The 2010 campaign was one of the most success ful in Boro history. The Fighting Scots ended the year at 306, marking the most wins since the 1990 squad won 33 matches. It also marked just the fifth 30win season in school history. Edinboro broke the school record for con secutive wins, running off a 16game winning streak. During that stretch the Scots lost just eight games. Edinboro finished as the runnerup in the PSAC, losing in four games to Clarion in the finals. The Fighting Scots
won the right to host the Atlantic Regional. After a win over Lock Haven the Fighting Scots were elimi nated by California(Pa.) in the regional semifinals. Edinboro finished the 2009 campaign with a 2313 record, finishing third in the PSAC West with a 136 record. The Fighting Scots made their fourth trip to the NCAA Playoffs under Soboleski, defeating Clarion in the Atlantic Region quarterfinals before falling to Lock Haven in the semifinals. After a slow start, Soboleski returned the Fighting Scots to the ranks of the elite in the Atlantic Region in her first season. Edinboro finished its first year under Soboleski’s tutelage with a 2616 ledger, and was selected for the NCAA Division II Playoffs. The 26 wins were particularly impressive since the Fighting Scots were struggling at 712 entering the final weekend in September. They would go on to win 17 of their final 19 regular season matches to qualify for the PSAC Tournament with a third place finish in the Western Division. With a fourgame win over Millersville in the quarterfinals, Edinboro reached the semifinals before falling in three games to Lock Haven. The same fate held true in the Atlantic Regional, as the Fighting Scots defeated Mount Olive in three games in the quarterfinals, but then lost in three games to Lees McRae in the semifinals. The Fighting Scots weren’t as fortunate in the 2006 campaign, as a young squad lost five of its last six matches to finish at 1917. Two of those losses came in five games. 2007 saw the Fighting Scots finish with a 2811 record, the most wins since the 1998 edition also won 28 matches. Edinboro enjoyed a successful play off run, reaching the PSAC Tournament semifinals, then falling in the finals of the Atlantic Regional Championship. A young 2008 squad devoid of any seniors post ed a 269 record, finishing second in the PSAC West and qualifying for the Atlantic Regional for the third time in four years. Head Coach key roles did not go unnoticed. She was selected the AVCA Atlantic Region Coach of the Year. Soboleski is wellknown in local volleyball circles. She has previously coached at two local institutions, Mercyhurst and Gannon. She took over the Edinboro program after serving as the head coach at Mercyhurst from 19992004. At Mercyhurst, she inherited a volleyball program that had not had a winning season since 1993, had won only five games in four years in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC), and had recorded just 26 wins in five previous seasons. She proceeded to lead the Lady Lakers to three winning seasons in six years at the helm, including a 218 finish in 2002, winning the Southern Division champi onship. The 2001 team went 1916, and her 2003 team was 1615. Prior to taking over at Mercyhurst, Soboleski spent four seasons as the head coach at her alma mater, Gannon, where she was previously a stand out player. Her 199598 Lady Knight editions reached the GLIAC Playoffs twice, including a 2114 record in her first season, with Gannon reaching the NCAA Division II Playoffs. Soboleski's final team was 1816 and qualified for the GLIAC Playoffs. She was an assistant coach under Gerry (Burbules) Vensel, a member of the Edinboro Athletic Hall of Fame, in 1994. "It has always been our intention to keep Edinboro University vol leyball in the forefront of the PSAC and the region," related Director of
Athletics Bruce Baumgartner at the time of her hiring. "We think coach Soboleski has what it takes to continue Edinboro University's winning tradition. We feel our program is in very good hands. Missy brings a great deal of energy and experience to our program, and she is very familiar with what Edinboro volleyball represents. We also like the fact that she enjoyed an excellent graduation rate at Mercyhurst.” A native of Rootstown, Ohio, Soboleski graduated from Gannon in 1993 with a bachelor's degree in Education and a minor in Sports Management and Health & Physical Education. A fouryear letterwinner for the Lady Knights from 1990 to 1993, Gannon was 11622 during that period. That included three straight trips to the Elite Eight to conclude her playing career. Soboleski enjoyed a distinguished career as a player, serving as a co captain in 1993. The outside hitter earned a spot on the Hamot Classic AllTournament team as a senior, then capped her career by earning All Tournament accolades in the NCAA Division II Atlantic Regional. She totaled 14 kills and 16 digs in the regional final win over Slippery Rock, propelling Gannon to its third straight trip to the Elite Eight. Soboleski resides in Edinboro with her three children Madison (11) and twins Braeden and Abigale (8). While at Gannon she also served as the SWA/Assistant Athletic Director.
Assistant Coaches
Jimmy Chan 2nd Year Brockport State ‘00
J
immy Chan is in his third season as the assistant coach after being hired in July of 2009. Edinbor has compiled 33 wins in his two seasons, with backto back trips to the NCAA Division II Atlantic Regional. Chan has 16 years of experi ence as a volleyball coach at vari ous levels, including a fiveyear stint as the head coach of the St. John Fisher volleyball team. He posted a 6585 record from 2002
06. His 2005 edition finished with a 1615 record. The Cardinals finished third in the Empire 8 Conference regular season then reached the Empire 8 Tournament semifinals. Chan was recognized as the Empire 8 Coach of the Year. He also guided the Cardinals to 16 wins in 2002, 2003 and 2004. “We are extremely excited to have Jimmy join the volleyball pro gram,” related Soboleski. “He brings a wealth of volleyball knowledge and experience that will help us tremendously on the court as well as recruiting.” Chan served as a math teacher at Canandaigua Academy in Canandaigua, NY, since 2000. He has also been heavily involved in coaching club teams, including the Niagara Frontier Volleyball Club from 200709. Chan is a graduate of Brockport State, where he earned his bache lor’s degree in Mathematics with a certification in Secondary Education in 2000. He completed work on his master’s degree in Mathematic Education in 2007 from Brockport State.

Edinboro Volleyball 2011
2011 Season Preview The Edinboro University volleyball team enjoyed one of its best seasons ever in 2010, finishing with a 306 record. That tied for the fourth highest win total in school history was the most since the 1990 squad won 33 matches. Along the way the Fighting Scots earned their fourth straight trip to the NCAA Division II Playoffs and advanced to the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference championship match for the first time since 2004. Five players earned AllPSAC honors. But one thing was missing, the one thing that matters the most – championships. After losing in the PSAC Tournament finals, Edinboro gained a reprieve when it was selected as the host of the NCAA Division II Atlantic Regional. Following a win over Lock Haven in the quarterfi nals, the Fighting Scots lost to California(Pa.) in the semifinals, proving that it is indeed hard to beat a team four times in a year. Head coach Missy Soboleski hopes to rectify things this year. Entering her seventh season at the helm, Soboleski has enjoyed great success, leading Edinboro to five NCAA playoff appearances in her six seasons. Her Fighting Scots have been particularly impressive the last four years, averaging 27 wins a year. “PSAC and Elite Eight are very realistic goals for our 2011 volleyball team,” Soboleski boldly predicted. “I feel we have one of the hardest working and focused teams in the region. We aren’t the type of team who just says they want the title, we are the team who is obsessed in reaching that goal. We return some very competitive athletes and brought in some, as well.” Soboleski admits that middle hitter Beyaca Martin and libero Maureen Tilert will be greatly missed. Both were first team AllPSAC selections. “Moe and Beyaca will be tough to replace,” noted Soboleski. “Moe was one of the most competitive athletes I’ve ever coached. She con trolled the defense on the floor and she made the peo ple who played around her very relaxed and at ease. However, she is quick to point out that it’s hard to overlook the likes of returning All PSAC performers Gina Boothe, Megan Osysko and Seth Sullivan. Sullivan, in fact, missed the post season due to ill ness and the PSAC West Rookie of the Year no doubt would have made a huge difference. “Our returning players are a big strength this sea son,” Soboleski stressed. “Our senior class has a lot of confidence and really wants Gina Boothe the PSAC title. We
Page 4
will also be bigger at the net, probably our biggest since I came to Edinboro. Blocking will be an offense as well as a defense. Seth Sullivan, the PSAC West Rookie of the Year, will bring so much to the court. She played like a veteran as a freshman, leading the team in kills in many matches. We couldn’t ask for more of a freshman. “The incoming freshmen just add some great depth in all the posi tions and will make for some serious competition in practice.” Soboleski added that all seven freshmen have the potential to make an impact, with the first two weeks of preseason drills providing a key as to who can handle the pressure. After losing a key performer in the late stages of the season each of the last two years, Soboleski’s biggest con “PSAC and Elite Eight are cern is keeping everyone healthy. “Ellie (Lininger) very realistic goals for our wasn’t at full strength 2011 volleyball team. I feel last year and losing Seth (Sullivan) for the playoffs we have one of the hardest last season definitely working and focused teams hurt our run for the in the region. We aren’t the title.” The Fighting Scots type of team who just says open up 2011 competi they want the title, we are tion in the Falcon Fest Tournament hosted by the team who is obsessed in Fairmont State, facing reaching that goal. We four WVIAC squads in two days. Soboleski will return some very competi look to challenge her tive athletes and brought in team in the preconfer some, as well.”” ence matches before fac ing the rigors of PSAC competition. Head coach Missy Soboleski “As usual, we want to prepare our team for our tough PSAC schedule,” she pointed out. “We are opening up with Fairmont and then will really be challenged in Texas. The pressure will be on us from the start of conference play. We need to win at home but we need to win on the road, as well. We have some tough region matches on the road and everyone is critical for regional seeding.” The “Texas” that Soboleski referred to the ASU Invitational, a rigor ous tournament hosted by Angelo State on September 910. The Rambelles were 1912 a year ago, losing in the Lone Star Conference title match to West Texas A&M. Edinboro will also face Southeastern Oklahoma State, Tarleton State and Abilene Christian. Abilene Christian was 276, finished the year ranked 22nd nationally, and reached the South Central Regional semifinals. Tarleton State was 2310, while Southeastern Oklahoma finished at 1015. Here’s a look at the 2011 Fighting Scots, positionbyposition: Here’s a look at the 2010 Fighting Scots, positionbyposition:
Setters In Megan Osysko the Fighting Scots possess one of the top setters in the country. A 5’7” senior, Osysko ranks third in career assists with 3,321. A year ago she earned first team AllPSAC West honors and was also named to the AVCA AllAtlantic Region Team for the second straight year. Osysko led the PSAC in assists and ranked ninth in Division II a year ago, finishing with 1,317. That was also the seventhhighest sea son total. She added 288 digs, good for fourth on the team, tied for first in service aces (4) and totaled 145 kills. “Megan leads the way with three years under her belt,” related Soboleski. “She did a great job last year running our offense. However,
Edinboro Volleyball 2011
Edinboro Volleyball 2011
2011 Season Preview we may look to run a 62.” Soboleski feels the addition of freshmen Brittany Centrobie and Julie Nolen affords her the luxury of running the 62. Both are very ath letic and former Ohio standouts. Centrobie is 5’6” and holds the season and career assists records at North Royalton High School. She was a second team alldistrict selection as a senior. Nolen is 5’8” and starred at Franklin Heights High School. She was a fouryear starter who earned honorable mention alldistrict accolades.
Middle Hitters Seniors Gina Boothe and Kelcie Hellmer provide the Boro with a strong pair of middle hitters, although Boothe will see a lot of time at opposite. Boothe is a twotime AllPSAC honoree and was named the 2008 PSAC West Freshman of the Year. She is also a twotime AVCA All Atlantic Region selection. The 6’1” Boothe finished with a teamhigh 398 kills after finishing third on the team in kills her first two years. She also ranked second on the team with 81 total blocks. Boothe enters her final year with 956 kills, needing 44 to become the 12th Boro player with 1,000 career kills. Hellmer proved a very pleasant surprise after giving up basketball to return to volleyball, a sport she had not played since high school. The 6’0” senior was particularly effective as a blocker, and should be even more effective with a year under her belt. She totaled 199 kills and a teamhigh 101 total blocks. Depth figures to come from a pair of freshmen with good size. Sara Aultz is the tallest Fighting Scot at 6’2” and was a standout in both volleyball and basketball at Orrville High School, helping the Red Riders to district championships in both sports. Cherene O’Hara is 6’1” and came all the way across the country to play for the Fighting Scots. She hails from the state of Washington and was a threeyear starter at Kent Meridian High School, where she earned allstate honors as a senior. “Kelcie (Hellmer) will lead the way in the middle,” Soboleski stated. “She’s a smart athlete on the court, is very quick and focused. Gina (Boothe), Sara (Autz) and Cherene (O’Hara) will all compete for one of the middle positions. The freshmen bring blocking and quickness. We look for both to contribute.”
“We have experience returning in Seth (Sullivan), who was our OH 1 last year, along with Ellie (Lininger) and Ang (Groshner) returning, as well,” noted Soboleski. “This is a tough position to predict as we added Tabby Meeks and Brittany Flynn, who could contribute as freshmen. We are very competitive in this position, which is a great problem to have. Passing and ball control will probably determine who plays.” Soboleski noted that Boothe has played on the rightside for three years and has a distinct advantage at opposite. “If we run a 62 offense Ellie (Lininger), Cherene (O’Hara) and Sara (Aultz) will all be competing for the second spot,” she added. “All have the ability to play there.”
Liberos/Defensive Specialists Soboleski isn’t about to underplay the loss of libero Maureen Tilert, who went on to be named Edinboro’s Senior Female Athlete of the Year. She holds Edinboro’s career and season records for digs, and her value as a leader on the court was even more impressive. “We suffered a tremendous loss with Moe, but we have plenty of athletes who will compete for the position,” Soboleski emphasized. “Ang (Groshner) will be the frontrunner as she has three years of expe rience and is one of the best ball control players returning.” Soboleski went on to stress that sophomore Danielle King and freshmen Haley Marett, Brittany Flynn and Brittany Coles will also com pete for the position. “Again, this is a position that is wide open and we really won’t have a good pulse on it until we see who is the most com petitive in preseason.” King saw limited action a year ago while playing in 75 games. The 5’7” sophomore finished with 94 digs and 10 service aces. Marett is a 5’4” freshman from Wilmington Area(Pa.) High School. She is a three time alldistrict selection who helped the Greyhounds to the District 10 championship as a senior. Coles is a 5’6” defensive specialist who hails from Norwin(Pa.) High School. She earned first team allsection honors.
Outside Hitters Three returnees and two newcomers make for a strong position at outside hitter. Leading the way is Seth Sullivan, a first team AllPSAC West selection and the PSAC West Freshman of the Year a year ago. The 5’10” sophomore finished with 343 kills, good for second on the team, despite missing the PSAC and NCAA tournaments. She added 296 digs, second on the team, and tied for the team lead with 40 service aces. Seniors Ellie Lininger and Angela Groshner have seen plenty of action over the last three years. Lininger, 5’11”, missed the latter part of her sophomore season and the early portion of her junior year following knee surgery. Over a yearandahalf removed from the surgery she should be 100 percent healthy. Lininger appeared in 78 games with 115 kills, 117 digs and 34 total blocks. Groshner, 5’8”, is best known for her defensive skills. She finished with 136 kills while ranking third in digs with 291. Another pair of Ohio recruits, freshmen Tabby Meeks and Brittany Flynn, figure to push the trio of returnees for playing time. Meeks is 5’8” and played for a powerful Pagua Franciscan High School program, helping the Bruins to backtoback state championships in 2008 and 2009. She earned honorable mention alldistrict honors as a senior. Flynn, also 5’8”, played at Magnificat High School and was a twotime honorable mention alldistrict choice and earned honorable mention all state accolades as a senior.

Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference } PSAC Overview
Originating in 1951 to administer and pro‐ mote men’s athletics, the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference has evolved into one of the NCAA’s most heralded intercollegiate confer‐ ences. The first major step came in 1977, when based on a growing interest, the league reor‐ ganized to provide a structure for its women’s programs. Only three years later, lacking a stan‐ dard competitive division, league voted to reclassify the entire conference to NCAA Division II. Among its recent enhancements the PSAC has expanded its membership twice during a four‐year span. The first occurred during the 2008‐09 academic year with the addition of full‐ time members Gannon University and Mercyhurst College, and associate member Long Island University‐C.W. Post. Over the past year, the PSAC’s Board of Directors agreed to welcome Seton Hill University as an associate member to begin play in field hockey during the 2011‐12 campaign. The membership now con‐ sists of 16 full‐time institutions and the two associate members. All of the league’s full‐time members are located within the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, which makes the PSAC the largest one‐state conference in the NCAA. The league has also grown to share the distinctions as: The largest conference in Division II, the largest foot‐ ball‐playing conference in the NCAA, and, with 23, the conference that sponsors the most championships at the Division II level. Highly competitive on a regional and national level, PSAC schools annually combine to send nearly one‐third of its teams into NCAA postseason play. Ultimately, the membership’s success has yielded 43 NCAA team and 246 indi‐ vidual title winners. While proud of its athletic accomplish‐ ments, the league also has evolved into one of Division II’s finest from an academic standpoint. Today, nearly one‐third of the PSAC’s estimated 6,300 participants are honored each year as “Scholar‐Athletes” for maintaining a grade‐point average of 3.25 or better ‐ a total that has near‐ ly doubled since PSAC Scholar‐Athletes were first recognized in the mid‐1990s. Although all 16 current institutions are members of Division II, seven league schools also compete at the Division I level in select sports. PSAC schools enroll over 127,000 stu‐ dents and claim over 710,000 alumni, including 483,000 who reside in Pennsylvania. The PSAC is governed by the presidents of the 16 member institutions. It employs a com‐ missioner, an associate and assistant commis‐ sioner, and a director of media relations at its headquarters in Lock Haven, Pa.

Tilert Nancy Acker Award Recipient Maureen Tilert was recognized as Edinboro’s 2011 Nancy Acker Award winner as the outstanding senior female ath lete. Tilert was a fouryear starter at libero. The diminutive (5’3”) senior departed as the school recordholder for career digs (2,457) and also holds four of the top eight season figures, including a schoolrecord 732 in 2010. She also ranks seventh in career service aces with 139. More importantly, Tilert helped Edinboro reach the NCAA playoffs all four years as the Fighting Scots finished with a 10739 record during her four years. As a senior Tilert helped Edinboro go 306, the first 30win season since 1990. The Fighting Scots reached the PSAC championship match and hosted the Atlantic Regional, advancing to the semifinals. She finished the year with a schoolrecord 732 digs and was fourth on the team with 32 services aces. She set a schoolrecord with 41 digs in a fourgame match vs. Pittsburg State. She ranked third in the PSAC and seventh in Division II in digs per game. Tilert earned second team Daktronics AllAtlantic Region honors and honorable mention AVCA AllAtlantic Region honors as a senior. She was also a second team AllPSAC West selection. In addition, she was named to the AllAtlantic Regional team. Tilert totaled 617 digs as a junior, a figure that now ranks third in a season, and became Edinboro’s career leader during an NCAA regional match vs. Lock Haven. The Fighting Scots finished the year with a 2313 record as Tilert ranked fifth in the PSAC and 24th in Division II in digs per game. As a sophomore Tilert helped the Fighting Scots post a 269 record as she totaled 570 digs, the fifthhighest total in a season. That was good for fourth in the PSAC and 56th in Division II. With Tilert playing a major role as a freshman the Fighting Scots finished 2811, reaching the finals of the Atlantic Regional. She would conclude her first campaign with 538 digs, the eighthhighest total in a season.

All-Americans & Yearly Honors Ashley Walton AVCA All-American; Third Team, 2002 & 2003 2003 PSAC West Athlete of the Year Ashley Walton was the first Edinboro volleyball player to earn AVCA Division II All American honors. She was joined by Jenna Newman (see page 1) a year ago. The 5’10” middle hitter from Manchester, PA was a third team selection in 2002, then duplicated that fete in 2003. Those were two of many honors earned by Walton during her career. She was recognized as the PSAC West Player of the Year as a senior, and also earned All Atlantic Region honors all four years. She was a fourtime AllPSAC choice, as well, earn ing second team honors as a freshman before moving up to the first team her final three years. As a freshman, she was also the Atlantic Region and PSAC West Rookie of the Year.
Jenna Newman 2007 AVCA & Daktronics All-American; PSAC West Athlete of the Year Jenna Newman capped a brilliant career in 2007 as she became Edinboro’s second AVCA All American, joining Ashley Walton. The 5’10” middle hitter earned honorable mention AVCA All American accolades and was a third team Daktronics AllAmerican. In addition, she was rec ognized as the PSAC West Athlete of the Year. She earned a spot on the AllPSAC West first team for the second straight year. While leading Edinboro to a 2811 record and a berth in the Atlantic Regional championship match, Newman fell just shy of setting the school record for kills in a season, finishing with 616. That left her with 1,899 career kills, seven shy of Walton’s school record of 1,906.
