anGierlak enters his 23rd season at the helm of the Edinboro University softball program. The veteran coach has led a renais sance of Boro softball in recent years, as the Fighting Scots won 18ormore games four of the last five seasons and earned a spot in the PSAC Tournament two of the previous three years. That streak was interrupted a year ago, as the Fighting Scots finished at 1316 and 410 in the PSAC West. The 2011 Fighting Scots were haunted by weather that forced the backup of doubleheaders after the team finished a very solid southern swing with a 96 record. Eight of the losses came by two runs or less. In 2010 Gierlak guided Edinboro to its sec ond straight appearance in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Tournament, as a young team with freshmen at many key posi tions finished with a 1918 record. In fact, they may have been in line for their second trip in three years to the NCAA Playoffs if not for six straight losses to end the season. The last two came in the PSAC play offs. In 2009 Gierlak guided the Fighting Scots to a schoolrecord 26 wins, as Edinboro fin ished with a 2619 ledger. The 26 wins sur passed the 1986 squad which finished 238. Edinboro qualified for the PSAC Playoffs for the second time in three years, and third time overall, winning a pair of games. Edinboro finished as the number two seed out of the Western Division. The 2009 Fighting Scot squad also had its firstever AllAmerican, as second baseman Dana Webb was named to the third team

Page 2

Louisville Slugger/NFCA AllAmerican Team, and was a first team Daktronics AllAmerican. Webb also became the first Fighting Scot rec ognized as the PSAC West Player of the Year. Gierlak has now guided the Fighting Scots to six twentywin campaigns in his 21 years. He owns an overall record of 3274343. In 2008 the Fighting Scots barely missed qualifying for the NCAA playoffs, finishing the year with an 1820 record after losing five of their final seven contests. The 2007 campaign was one of its most successful seasons in school history, as the Fighting Scots made their second ever trip to the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Playoffs, then were selected for the NCAA Playoffs. That marked the first time an Edinboro team had been selected for NCAA postseason play. The Fighting Scots responded with a

strong showing in the MidAtlantic Regional, upsetting nationallyranked Kutztown and Shippensburg before finally being eliminated. All told, Edinboro finished with a 2122 and was 127 in the PSAC West, good for sec ond place. The season was capped by a 10 win over the defending national champion and 2007 NCAA Division II runnerup Lock Haven. The victory snapped the Lady Eagles’ 34game winning streak. The 21 wins represented the most since the 2000 team went 2115. That was also the last team to win more conference games, as the 2000 edition went 146 in league plays. Gierlak began his coaching career in foot ball before concentrating on softball. He coached the Edinboro softball team from 198994, then after a oneyear hiatus in 1995 to focus solely on his duties as an assistant on for mer head coach Tom Hollman’s football staff, he returned in 1996 and has led the Fighting Scots ever since. A native of Buffalo, New York, Gierlak graduated from Edinboro with a Bachelor’s Degree in Health and Physical Education. He was a threeyear letterman for the Fighting Scots football team as a defensive back. Gierlak and his wife, the former Amy

Adams, reside in Edinboro and have three chil dren, Alexandria Alicia (21), a junior on the Edinboro softball team, Daniel Jr. (Joey) (18) and Lauren (14). Amy is an Edinboro graduate, as well, and was the 1989 Nancy Acker Award winner, recognizing as the top senior female athlete at Edinboro.

Graduate Assistant Coach Kristin

McDaniel is in her first year as a gradu ate assistant at Edinboro University. She will serve as an assistant to head softball coach Dan Gierlak while work ing on her Master’s Degree in Special Education. McDaniel played collegiately at Robert Morris from 20052009, and was a threeyear starter at second base for the Colonials. Her best season at the plate came as a senior in 2009. She hit .254 with seven doubles, four

home runs and 21 RBIs. The year before she hit .227 with five doubles, three triples and 20 RBIs. She was part of a 2006 Robert Morris team that finished as the Northeast Conference regular season cochampions. An outstanding student, as well, McDaniel was named an AllAmerican Scholar Athlete in 20082009 and in the fall of 2009 she served as a softball undergraduate assis tant. In addition, she played on the 2008 U.S.A. Olympic Team in Bound for Beijing Tour. McDaniel graduated from Robert Morris in December 2009 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Elementary Education. A native of Yardley, PA she has served as a preschool teacher for ages four and five year olds at Yardley Kids Academy.

Scots Look for Return to Postseason Action

The Edinboro University softball team

has won 18 or more games four out of the past five seasons. The Fighting Scots have also earned spots in the PSAC Playoffs two out of three years. Last year, unfortunately, was the exception as Edinboro finished at 1316 over all and 410 in the PSAC West. The season started off promising as the Scots finished their seasonopening trip south at 96. The success the team found early on disap peared, though, just as did the sunny, warm weather the team enjoyed during its Florida trip as rain, cold and postponements plagued Edinboro last spring.

Jessica VanDamia will anchor the infield at second base and hit five home runs with 16 RBIs a year ago.

Page 4

Longtime head coach Dan Gierlak believes the Scots aren’t far off from getting back into the PSAC West mix, however. Many of the same key contributors to Edinboro’s 19 win season of two years ago return this spring looking for bounceback campaigns. The strength of the team figures to be its experience as Edinboro boasts a veteran roster with eight juniors and four seniors. Just three freshmen and two sophomores highlight the squad this year, meaning that the Fighting Scots won’t lack for veteran leadership. “I think that our team strength will be that we have a great group of juniors and seniors who have been starting for three and four years,” Gierlak said. “They have a lot of experience, have played in big games and know what is expected of them in the conference.” The PSAC West field once again appears to be strong looking at preseason expectations. Defending division champion California (Pa.) reached the NCAA Tournament a year ago and received three firstplace votes in the preseason coaches’ poll, and still isn’t the favorite to win the divi sion according to PSAC coaches – that honor goes to Mercyhurst. “It is very competitive,” Gierlak said of the division. “Cal has lost a great group of seniors so they will be young, but they still have great talent on the field. Mercyhurst will be strong again in the field and with the bats and if their pitching can catch up they will be strong. Gannon has done a nice job with their players in the last couple of years and have one of the most dominant pitchers in the PSAC.” Edinboro, meanwhile, was picked to finish fifth in the Western Division. The underdog role suits Gierlak just fine. Here’s a look at the 2012 Fighting Scots, position by position:

Infielders Nowhere is Edinboro’s level of experi ence more noticeable than in the infield. The left side features two stalwarts in junior

Edinboro University Softball 2012

Stephanie Cassidy at third base and class mate Marissa Pullo, a second team AllPSAC West pick a year ago, at shortstop. Junior Jessica VanDamia returns for her third sea son as the starter at second base while senior Jade Thrower and junior Ashley Black will anchor first. “We have six players who have started in the infield for three and four years,” Gierlak said. The recipe for success all starts with All PSAC honoree Pullo. The Tonawanda, NY product is fresh off another standout cam paign in which she earned AllPSAC acco lades for the second straight year after lead ing the team in batting average (.341), on base percentage (.398), hits (29) and stolen bases (seven). In 2010, she earned PSAC West Freshman of the Year after setting the school record with a .484 batting average with 44 hits. Pullo figures to be the catalyst of the offense again this year while hitting out of the leadoff spot. An allaround player, she could hold the key to the season for the Scots. “She must have a great year for us,” Gierlak emphasized. “She is an aggressive player with a great work ethic. She can hit the long ball and then bunt for a base hit her next time up.” Cassidy has started 61 games over the past two seasons after immediately earning the job at the hot corner as a freshman in 2010. Last season was a struggle for the Pittsburgh native, however. In fact, Cassidy’s season was a bit of a microcosm of the Scots year as she batted .154 after hitting .310 with three home runs and 18 RBIs in 2010. Still, just a year removed from showing her potential at the plate and with a strong arm, Cassidy could be a linchpin of a turn around this year for the team. “Steph has all the tools to be a great third baseman,” Gierlak said. VanDamia returns as the starter at sec ond base after starting 17 games while hit ting .255 a year ago. VanDamia has flashed power, smacking four home runs in 2010. “She has a very good glove and has come up big with her bat in big games,”

Edinboro University Softball 2012

Gierlak said. “She has really worked hard hit ting this offseason and I look for her to have a big year with the bat.” First base isn’t as set in stone as the rest of the infield, but still has much in the way of experience. Thrower and Black figure to split time at first, while each will also spend time as the DH. Thrower is a fouryear starter for Edinboro in a similar role and returns this spring after being limited to 20 games a year ago due to injury. When fully healthy, she possesses a power bat as she was among the team leaders in doubles and home runs in 2010, and has smashed 10 home runs during her career. Black, meanwhile, will see time at first base, DH and also behind the plate. A first team AllPSAC West pick in 2010, Gierlak calls the Waterford native “one of the best hitters I

Marissa Pullo hit a team-leading .341 and earned second team All-PSAC West honors at shortstop.

have seen here as well as in the conference.” After suffering a sophomore slump (.217, two home runs, 11 RBIs) a year ago, Black looks to return to the consistency of her freshman year (.361, seven HR, 21 RBIs). There’s no question behind the plate as senior Aimee Sisson returns for her fourth season as the starter. Over her career, Sisson has started 108 games behind the plate, living up to the billing of the term “everyday player.” “She has been one of our leaders since her freshman year,” Gierlak remarked. “She can throw anyone out at any time at any base.” Sisson, though, had a down year at the plate like many of her teammates. After bat ting .318 with six HR and 26 RBIs in 2010, her numbers dropped to .235, three HR and 12 RBIs last season. Sisson will need to return to her numbers from ’10 if Edinboro’s lineup

Aimee Sisson is a top player both at bat and behind the plate. She looks to rebound after hitting .235.

Page 6

is to fully click. “We need Aimee to have a great year with the bat. She is one of the players we need to have a big year for us,” Gierlak emphasized. Backing up Sisson will be senior Caitlyn Rog, who Gierlak said “has the biggest heart of any player I have coached.” Junior Jennifer Long also hopes to return from shoulder surgery and provide the team with depth.

Outfielders While the infield seems set, the outfield has a few more questions. Junior Kari Falk is anything but a question mark, however, after backtoback stellar seasons. “Kari is one of the best athletes on the team,” Gierlak said. “She covers a lot of ground in the outfield and has a big bat; she’s been one of our best hitters during her first two years.” Falk brings needed pop to the middle of the order, hitting .300 with four home runs and 15 RBIs while also slugging .522 last year. While Falk brings steady centerfield play, she’ll also be called upon to pitch again this year, leaving more questions in the out field on the days when she takes the circle. Sophomore Brenna Cosgrove will take a starting role in the outfield this season after serving in a utility role last year. The McDowell High School product saw time in 23 games with eight starts in her Edinboro debut last year, batting .211. “She has worked hard this past year at becoming a slapper and has gotten stronger and faster,” Gierlak said of Cosgrove. “I look for her to develop into a key player for us.” Playing time in the outfield, though, remains up for grabs at the start of the sea son and could go to the hot hand at any given time. Sophomore Sarah Gustafson will vie for starting time after picking up just 12 atbats last year. The lefty hitter brings range in the field and figures to be another slap hitter Gierlak can move around in the lineup. Senior Brittney Price will reprise her utility role again this year after starting 27 games a year ago and 95 total during her three years in red and white. Price’s athletic ability will see her primarily play in the outfield,

Edinboro University Softball 2012

but also give Gierlak several options as she has the capability to play at second, third or short. While without an every day spot at one posi tion, Price figures to be “one of the keys to the season,” according to the head coach. Newcomer Alex Baer, who will see her first playing time as a college player after redshirting last season following an allcon ference career at Olean (NY) High School, will also battle for playing time in the out field after moving from the infield. Baer could bring some power off the bench for the Fighting Scots while fighting for time at second base. Another newcomer, freshman Kelsey Matuszak will figure into the equation as well. “I’ve been very impressed with her,” Gierlak said of the Avon (Ohio) High gradu ate. “She has a very good knowledge of the game and will push for a starting job.”

vide some needed depth in the circle for Edinboro and allow Falk to anchor center field. Filbert, a fouryear starter at Allegany Limestone, picked up over 400 strikeouts for her high school career. Her dedication to fall workouts has put her in position to take a starting job, Gierlak said. “She has great spin on her ball and can really make the ball move,” Gierlak added. “She has become a lot stronger this past year; she will outwork you. She has to con tinue to improve, but I am expecting her to be a starter for us.” Junior Roxanne Herrington also will be in the mix with her drop ball. After appear ing in three games of relief work last year, Gierlak says the key to her seeing more time in the circle is working on her control and gaining the ability to get ahead of batters.

Pitchers Junior Amanda Shields returns as the top pitcher for the Fighting Scots after mak ing 12 starts with a 56 record and a 2.87 ERA last season. Shields made 14 appearances in all for Edinboro, striking out 37 in 70 2/3 innings of work. In the past two years, she has started 21 games for the Scots. “Amanda has looked great at times for the first two years,” Gierlak said. “I am look ing for her to take the next step in becoming a pitcher and not just a thrower. She makes the ball move and knows how to change speeds. If she can learn to continue to change her speeds up and hit her spots, she can win some games for us.” Shields has found success against the top of the PSAC West before – in one of her strongest outings a year ago, she limited No. 24 California (Pa.) to just one run on five hits in six complete innings of work. Falk will also figure into the rotation equation. She led the team in wins and ERA a year ago (66, 2.22 ERA) while working a team high 72 2/3 innings in 13 appearances, 11 of which were starts. She also struck out a team high 48 batters while walking 32. Opponents hit .247 against her during the year. Freshman Victoria Filbert could pro

Edinboro University Softball 2012

Kari Falk led the pitching staff with a 6-6 record and a 2.22 ERA. She is also a standout in center field.
