Davis & Elkins (5-3, 4-1 WVIAC) at #9 EDINBORO (5-0, 4-0 PSAC)

GAME STORIES TODAY’S OPENING TIP }Edinboro has never lost to Davis & Elkins,

a member of the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, in three meetings. This marks the second consecutive year the two teams have played each other as Edinboro was victori ous, 6457 a year ago at McComb Fieldhouse. The Senators are fresh off a 7460 victory over Ohio Valley on Saturday. Sophomore guard Rachel Gostomski paced D&E with a careerhigh 22 points in the win while sophomore forward Jorden Lykes added 16. In last year’s meeting on Dec. 6, 2010, Darche’ Jackson led all scorers with 17 points in Edinboro’s victory. Micki Cerchiaro recorded a doubledouble with 10 points and 11 rebounds while Renee’ Brown also poured in 12 points during the victory. Of D&E’s returning players from last year’s squad, Page Turner paced last year’s scor ing effort with 13 points while Victoria Lyles finished with seven points and nine rebounds.

The Edinboro defense was able to force 27 turnovers and hold Davis & Elkins to 39.3 percent shooting from the field.

SCOTS CRACK NATIONAL TOP 10 }Edinboro moved into the top 10 in the

USA TODAY/ESPN Division II Top 25 Coaches’ Poll for the first time since the 199798 season with a No. 9 ranking this week. Edinboro last ranked inside the national top 10 when it was slotted a schoolbest seventh overall in the poll released on Dec. 15, 1997. The Fighting Scots have been voted in the top 10 just twice previ ously in school history backtoback weeks in December, 1997.

HOME SWEET HOME }Edinboro plays just its second home

game of the young season Wednesday against Davis & Elkins after playing four of its first five on the road. McComb Fieldhouse has been quite friendly to Edinboro in recent seasons as the red and white have gone 224 on their home court during the past two regular seasons.

LAST TIME OUT...

} Edinboro University junior Samantha Blazetic and senior Raven Metz put in career days as the No. 11 Fighting Scots moved to 50 on the season with an 8953 victory over Cheyney on Sunday after noon. Blazetic led all scorers with a careerbest 24 points on nineof13 shooting from the field and sixofseven from the free throw line. She also recorded four steals and three blocks as part of an allaround per formance in just 25 minutes of action. Metz, a day after posting a careerbest nine assists in Saturday’s win at Shippensburg, also poured in 18 points, her highest total wearing the red and white. Edinboro (50, 40 PSAC West) jumped on Cheyney (07, 04 East) from the outset, lighting up the scoreboard with 50 first half points while shooting over 51 percent as a team to take a 22point lead (5028) into the break. The Fighting Scots did not allow the Wolves an opportunity to trim the lead, stifling the home squad in the second half. Edinboro held Cheyney to just 33 percent shooting (10for30) and without a single basket from the perimeter during the final 20 minutes. Edinboro forced 31 Cheyney turnovers on the day. Junior Kiara Brown also finished in dou blefigures for the Fighting Scots with 13 points and three steals.

Edinboro has started 50 eight times in program history. The best start in school history came during the program’s only undefeated season a 100 campaign in 197273. The best beginning to a year since then was the 90 opening by the 199899 team.

BUSY WEEK AHEAD

}Edinboro will play three games in four

days this week, beginning tonight. After tonight’s game, a pair of games against the top two teams from the PSAC East are on tap as the Fighting Scots welcome in West Chester (51, 31) on Friday night at 5:30 before a Saturday afternoon date with Millersville (41, 31) before Edinboro breaks until Dec. 29.

DARCHE’ MAKES IT BACK-TOBACK SCOTS’ AOTW

}For the second straight week, the PSAC West Women’s Basketball Athlete of the Week wears plaid. Sophomore Darche’ Jackson earned the honor for the third week of the season, the conference announced on Nov. 28.

Jackson turned in an outstanding effort in Edinboro's only game of the week, an 87 56 win over Shepherd. In only 25 minutes of playing time, Jackson scored 19 points on 8of15 shooting from the floor (53 per cent), pulled down seven rebounds, dished out five assists, made seven steals and did not commit a single turnover. All seven of her steals came in the first half as she helped the Fighting Scots take a 12point halftime lead.

}Edinboro junior guard Kiara Brown was

She helped the defending PSAC champion Fighting Scots start their defense of the title with a pair of wins in the first two con ference games of the season against PSAC East Division foes. She averaged 19.5 points, 2.0 rebounds and 4.5 steals in wins over Mansfield and defending PSAC East champion Bloomsburg. Brown shot 47 per cent from the field (14for30), including an impressive 39 percent from beyond the arc (7for18) while also making 4of5 free throws. She also added three total assists and a blocked shot while only committing three turnovers in 42 minutes of play. In the win over Mansfield, Brown posted 26 points, five steals and four boards while also connecting on four threepointers.

THIEVERY HIGHLIGHTS HOT START }The Fighting Scots have forced their

opposition into an average of 32.4 turnovers per game in the first five con tests of the year, including inducing Shepherd into a whopping 47 turnovers. Edinboro’s defense has forced 20.4 steals per game on the year.

The Fighting Scots have made the most of all those turnovers forced – Edinboro has scored an average of 39 points per night off of turnovers. Edinboro is +15.4 in turnovers per game (17.0 to 32.4). Edinboro leads the PSAC with 102 steals in just five games, or an average of 20.4 steals per night. Next best in the conference is Gannon at 16.8 steals per game. Kiara Brown leads the PSAC with 4.2 steals per game.

IT’S ALL ABOUT THE ‘D’

} The turnover numbers from the opposi tion in the early going aren’t the only impressive defensive stats from the Scots ‘D.’ Edinboro has stifled its first five oppo nents, holding the opposition to 38.6 per cent shooting from the field and just 26.8 percent from behind the arc. All told, oppo nents are averaging only 58.2 points against the Fighting Scots.

DEPTH PERCEPTION

} Edinboro used a system of spreading min utes across the entire roster to great suc cess a year ago and has been finding equal playing time throughout its rotation again in the early going. Samantha Blazetic leads the team in minutes played so far but averages just 25.4 minutes per game. Seven players (Blazetic, Renee’ Brown, Raven Metz, Darche’ Jackson, Kiara Brown, Micki Cerchiaro and Kerry Connolly) are averaging more than 20 min utes per contest through five games.

SPREADING THE WEALTH

}Four Edinboro players enter tonight’s games averaging in double figures. Kiara Brown leads the way at 16.8 ppg while Samantha Blazetic (13.2), Renee’ Brown (11.4) and Raven Metz (11.2) are all in double figures as well. Darche’ Jackson (8.8) has added a strong

scoring threat as well.

MOVIN’ ON UP

}A trio of Fighting Scots are making their

marks on the school’s record books this season. Renee’ Brown, Micki Cerchiaro and Samantha Blazetic all continue to rise up several categories in terms of Edinboro career records. Blazetic recently moved into second place alltime in Edinboro blocked shots during the opening weekend of the season. Still only a junior, Blazetic stands just eight blocks away from tying the program record of 159 set by Terri Ayers between 199093. Renee Brown rose to 22nd on the alltime scoring chart with 1,059 points, passing the 1,034 scored by Lachelle Crawl between 19992003. Brown needs just over 300 points to crack the program top 10. She also stands 9th alltime in free throws made with 253 and tied for 12th in rebounds with 565. Cerchiaro, meanwhile, is eying the top 10 in multiple categories. She currently lists sev enth in blocks, 12th in steals and 19th in rebounds.

SCOTS KEEP THEIR BALANCE }Balance was a key component to

Edinboro’s success last year as not one player averaged more than 28 minutes per game and no one reached 12 ppg. Instead, Edinboro relied on its depth to provide dif ferent scoring leaders throughout the sea son. Five players (Kiara Brown, Renee’ Brown, Micki Cerchiaro, Darche’ Jackson and Samantha Blazetic) averaged between 9.311.6 ppg during the year. Edinboro became perhaps the deepest team in the conference last season, aver aging 30.7 ppg from its bench.

LIGHTING UP THE SCOREBOARD }Through the first five games of the sea

son, Edinboro has averaged 84 points per contest. The total is the highest among all teams in the PSAC as only one other team has averaged over 80 points, Indiana (Pa.) – the Crimson Hawks are averaging 83.3 points per game.

ROLLIN’ RAVEN

}Senior guard Raven Metz has jumped out to a hot start in helping Edinboro begin its season 50. The West Mifflin, Pa. native set career highs in assists (nine, against Shippensburg) and points (18, against Cheyney) during the Scots’ weekend wins. Metz’ previous careerhigh for points in a single game was 14 – set just 11 days prior against Shepherd at McComb Fieldhouse. Metz is averaging 11.2 points per contest, over five points better than her career average entering the year.

NEW-LOOK PSAC SCHEDULE

}Edinboro’s 26game schedule has a differ

ent look this season as the PSAC begins a full crossover format. Not only will the Fighting Scots face all Western Division opponents twice each, but will also play all eight Eastern Division schools once each as well. All 22 games count in the league standings.

PRE-SEASON ALL-CONFERENCE SELECTIONS

}Three Fighting Scots were named to the

PSAC PreSeason AllConference Team at the PSAC Women’s Basketball Media Day in October. PSAC coaches selected Kiara Brown (11.6 points per game with 43 3’s and 47 blocks last season), Renee’ Brown (11.3 ppg, 5.6 rebounds pg, 49 steals) and Darche’ Jackson (9.5 ppg). Edinboro’s trio were joined by Amy Johns of California, Sarah Pastorek of IUP and Danielle Smith of Slippery Rock on the preseason all con ference team.

PILING UP CAREER HIGHS

}The Fighting Scots opened the season hit

ting on all cylinders with a pair of opening victories at Mansfield and Bloomsburg. Multiple career highs were set during the weekend by various Scots including highs in point totals for a single game by three players. Kiara Brown delivered 26 points in the win over Mansfield, bettering her previ ous careerhigh of 22 points set last season. A day later Micki Cerchiaro, who missed much of the Mansfield game after leaving with injury, posted her careerbest points day with 20 against Bloomsburg, one bet ter than her previous high of 19. Also in the Mansfield game, sophomore Meghyn Patterson finished with a careerhigh eight points. Her previous best was four in a

Metz would then better her own career best by scoring 18 at Cheyney while Samantha Blazetic poured in a careerhigh 24 points. EDINBORO ENTERS SEASON BATTLE-TESTED

}The Fighting Scots begin the season slate after testing themselves against two very formidable Division I opponents in exhibi tion play. Edinboro traveled to St. Bonaventure on Nov. 4 for its first action of the year before heading to #17 Purdue for a date on Nov. 6.

Though Edinboro lost both exhibitions, the Fighting Scots opened more than a few eyes with their strength of play against the stiff competition. Against St. Bonaventure, an Atlantic 10 staple and entrant into the WNIT second round in each of the past three seasons, Edinboro led for the majority of the contest before finally falling, 7565 after a late rally by the Bonnies. Foul trouble hurt the Scots late as three players in red and white fouled out. The Scots had three players in double figures as Kiara Brown led the way with 17 points, ahead of the 13 points from Renee’ Brown, slowed by four fouls through much of the second half, and 12 points from Hope Mancini. Against #17 Purdue, Edinboro again held tough in an 8873 final score. Samantha Blazetic stepped up against the added competition, recording the first double double of the year for the Scots with 18 points and 11 rebounds. In all, Edinboro had five players in double figures at Purdue’s Mackey Arena.
