QUILLING PROJECTS

Hello!

I

t’s been a true honour to work with Mental Health UK on this issue’s stunning All-occasion Quilling Set. With 80 pieces to kick-start a new skill or help hone one you’ve had for years, I hope this helps you settle you after a long day at work, or take your brain into a mindful state with our brilliant creations our Design Team has created just for you! This issue comes with 15 stunning quilled creations, as well as showing you how to create your own unique designs for any occasion in your crafting calendar. Starting off the Using Your Kit section is Lou Collins, who shares her expert knowledge on this stunning art form and how to get to grips with the kit if you’re a beginner. We also have previous Cardmaker of The Year Kirstie Cairns showcasing unique card shapes, whilst using stash you may already have. Following Kirstie is Sarah Jackman Read, who displays a wonderful array of traditional all-occasion cards, and rounding off this pull-out is Mel Jess. One of the queens of 3D projects, Mel takes you on a tour of trinkets and gift ideas for loved ones near and far – I love the cactus earrings she’s done! If you’re looking to escape into your craft room and learn a new technique, let Katie Skilton take you through the retiform stamping process in our Skill-building Essentials or maybe Vanessa Hodgson’s trapped Distress Oxide Ink blending catches your eye. Both are brilliant for immersing yourself in for a long crafting session. This is my last issue of Papercraft Essentials as I’m going to be creating Premium Magazines and kits for Chloe’s Creative Cards, Sentimentally Yours, John Next Door, Lisa Horton, IndigoBlu and many more, so if you see them in the supermarket, pick one up and send me your makes, I’d love to see what you create! From issue 212 the brilliant Jenn McKean will be taking over – she has a wealth of crafting knowledge, so you’re in great hands! Until next time, happy crafting,

Mike Cross Editor mike.cross@practicalpublishing.co.uk

Tim Holtz Foundry Wax We’re excited to get our hands on Tim Holtz’s new Distress Foundry Waxes that will make a fine addition to any of your mixed-media projects. The Distress Foundry Waxes are designed to create luminous metallic highlights on porous and non-porous surfaces; the fluid wax transforms into a vibrant metallic finish once heat is applied. There are four colours in the set including Gilded, Mined, Sterling and Statue and each creates the signature Tim Holtz look that we love. To use, shake the bottle until the mixing ball rattles and the pigments mix properly. Apply drops of wax to a craft sheet and apply directly to the surface using a dry paintbrush or smudging with your finger. Heat to transform your embossed and mixed-media projects and be amazed at the results. Head to www.afth.co.uk to see more from Tim Holtz

Star letter Beautiful bouquet It is so good to be able to get out and pick up a monthly copy of Papercraft Essentials again now restrictions are lifted. Recently I got the copy with the Christina Griffiths Secret Garden kit and I just love the background papers. I thought I would share the first card that I made with them using die-cuts – I coloured them to match the shades on the papers. I have many ideas for more. The colours are so adaptable. Jenny McRonald, via email Mike says: Jenny, this card is so beautiful! I adore the little basket brimming with flowers, and then the adorable little bunny in the corner is the icing on the cake! How to... retiform stamp

1 Trim cardstock to the required size. If you are placing an aperture into the base, die-cut the shape at this stage.

2 Place the Post-it notes on the card blank to create a section to add the ink. Apply the first colour.

3 Using a Post-it note, section off the area just inked and use a second Post-it note creating a new section. Apply ink.

Happy b-day

Step by step 1 Die-cut a hexagon from white cardstock. 2 Cover a section of the card front with a Post-it note and apply the Distress Oxide Ink. Keep the Post-it note in place and stamp the image so that it slightly overlaps the edge. 3 Remove the Post-it note and place a clean one over the area that has been inked. Use a second Post-it note to mark the next section to be inked and apply the ink. Repeat as necessary on each section. 4 Place the Washi tape along the bottom section. Stamp and die-cut the sentiment and adhere using 3D foam pads. 5 Die-cut a slightly larger hexagon from white cardstock and layer onto the back.

Top Tip

For you 24

1 Create a card blank by folding your chosen card blank size in half. Trim a white panel of cardstock slightly smaller. 2 Take the white panel and place a Post-it note at an angle so that the panel will be split into sections. 3 Apply each colour of Distress Oxide Ink, deepening on the edges and making it lighter towards the centre. Remember to apply Post-it notes to cover. Stamp the images. 4 Die-cut the flower and ink as shown, apply to card front and a gem to finish.

Crafty idea!

by Laura Rumble

If you don’t have a manual die-cutting machine and circle dies you can instead use different-sized round items to draw around to give you a perfect circle shape

You’ll need StickerKitten Sea Creatures card kit white cardstock light blue inkpad acetate scoreboard Ranger Glossy Accents Lucy’s Cards Little Things assorted sequins & gems circle dies manual die-cutting machine

Step by step 1 Use a 5½” die to cut the following circles: one from patterned paper, one from acetate and four from white cardstock. 26

2 Take one of the white cardstock circles and die-cut the centre out with a 4½” die to create a frame. 3 Adhere the patterned paper circle to one of the white cardstock circles. Adhere two pieces of the sea creature ephemera in place. 4 Place the white frame face down and adhere the acetate layer to the back. Cut 3D foam pads in half lengthways and adhere them around the acetate ensuring they don’t show past the frame with no gaps. 5 Add sequins and confetti

onto the middle of the acetate. Adhere the patterned paper to the cardstock circle with the pattern facing down. 6 With the remaining two circles score a line ¾” from one edge and ¼” from the opposite edge. The larger flap on one circle becomes a hinge. 7 Add adhesive above the score line, adhere it to the back of the shaker ensuring the hinge is at the top and the circles all line up properly. 8 Trim the ¼” flap from the bottom of the circle, allowing the card to stand up. With the final circle, cut along both

scored lines and adhere the large piece to the card back to strengthen it. 9 Add a greeting and one more sea creature to the front of the shaker. Add dots of Glossy Accents to the sea creature’s eyes. When adhering acetate it’s a good idea to use a dry adhesive such as tape runner or double-sided tape – wet glue and acetate is a slippery combination and can get messy!

1 Trim down two pieces of kraft patterned paper to matt onto the white card blank. Cut one in half diagonally. Flip the other over to the plain side and repeat stamp ‘HAPPY BIRTHDAY’ to create patterned paper. Adhere this card blank. 2 Make the triangle into a flat shaker: a. Trim packaging plastic into a triangle at least 1cm larger than the kraft triangle. Add doublesided tape around the edge on the back of the kraft triangle. b. Lay the plastic onto the work surface and place the kraft patterned paper face down on top. Starting with the longest edge, fold the plastic around the paper creasing it and securing it to the double-sided tape. The corners take a little fiddling but fold, don’t trim, as there needs to be a complete seal at the corners otherwise the shaker confetti will escape. c. Fold one more edge of plastic over the paper and secure to the tape. While the final side is

still unsealed add in some shaker confetti and seal up the final edge. Adhere the triangle onto the card front. 3 Add silver pen detail and a dot of Glossy Accents to the eye of the whale. Affix the whale to an action wobbler spring and attach it to the card just above centre. Add the greeting below the whale using 3D foam pads. 4 If the card weight is off by the wobbler on the front, add a square of heavy cardstock to the back of the card. The lightweight flexible plastic that most stamp sets come in is perfect for flat shakers – it doesn’t stretch out of shape or rip and it is lightweight enough to fold and crease neatly

QUILLING Lou Collins

Lou's top tips...

How to... get started with the

for larger shapes

floral corner Other tools you may find helpful would be: • A fine-tip glue applicator • Tweezers for pinching ends together

1 Coil the whole length of a strip around the quilling tool.

2 Glue the end of a second strip to the first.

3 Continue coiling to create a large quilled coil.

38

Lou’s essential advice for card designs 1 Once your quilled shapes are adhered you will no longer see the template lines underneath. Do not worry about getting your paper strips to fit these exactly, they are simply a guide for you. 2 When creating a paper border around a letter, use tweezers to neatly fold the paper strip around a corner, but only once the glue has fully dried on the previous section. 3 You may want to begin the floral corner or the heart template with the simple quilled circle shapes to practise before moving onto the slightly more difficult other shapes and flourishes. 4 Decide on your colour scheme before you start to ensure you have enough of each colour required.

1 Create a large quilled circle, adhere and once dry, pinch one side to create a teardrop shape.

2 Glue this down onto the template and use a pin to hold the points of each layer together while the glue dries.

3 Wind the end of a strip loosely around the quilling tool.

4 Release the strip and open up until it is roughly the shape of the flourish on the template.

5 Add glue to the template using a fine-tipped glue applicator.

6 Place the strip onto the glue, holding in place with the quilling tool until the glue is dry.

Downloads... Don’t forget your template downloads from CraftWorld www.craftworld.com/cms/papercraft-essentials

QUILLING HOW-TO

How to... create smaller holes

1 Slide the end of a quilling strip through the slot in the quilling tool.

2 Wind the strip tightly around the tool to the end – you may need only half the strip length.

3 Place the wound strip into a small circle in the template and allow the strip to open up to the edges.

4 Add a small dab of glue to the end of the strip before removing the tool. Leave the quilled strip in the template while the glue dries.

3 Gently tap the coil until it opens out to the desired size.

4 Add a dab of glue to the end of the strip and leave in place to dry.

3 Glue the end of the coil and pinch with tweezers or your quilling tool until dry if needed.

4 Use a pin from the kit in the centre of the coil and pin it towards one edge to create an offset coil. Add small dabs of glue to hold the strips to the outer edge.

How to... create medium holes

1 Wind a full strip around the quilling tool to the end – this does not need to be wound as tightly as you did for the smaller pieces.

2 Place the coiled strip into the centre of a medium-sized hole and allow it to relax out.

How to... create large holes

1 Wind a long strip or even join two together to create a large coil in the quilling tool.

2 Place the coil into one of the large circles on the template and allow to open up.

How to... get started with the LOVE template

1 Add a thin line of glue to just part of the outer edge of one of the letters.

2 Place the thin edge of a quilling strip into the glue and hold upright until dry.

3 Work around the letter until the whole outline has a strip border.

4 Fill the letter with small quilled shapes using the template as a guide.

Step by step 1 Cover the front of a 15x9cm top-folding white card blank with yellow cardstock trimmed slightly smaller. Cut pink patterned paper to 14x8cm and adhere on top. 2 Trim white cardstock to 14x5.5cm and stamp a sentiment in the centre. Layer onto yellow cardstock and adhere across the front. 3 Trace an ‘O’ onto tracing paper with a pencil, turn over and go over the design on the back. Trace the ‘O’ around the sentiment and go around the edge with quilling paper. 4 Fill in the ‘O’ with a mixture of shaped loose and tight coils and scrolls. Add a mixture of scrolls and shaped loose coils either side to complete the design. 43

Utterly CHARMING If you’re looking for a unique gift for a loved one, let Mel take you through how to make a show-stopper or two with her how-to guide

Paw box frame You’ll need All-occasion Quilling Kit template downloaded from CraftWorld white cardstock gems frame computer & printer sentiment stamp

Crafty idea! Try using a different shape or letter and make in the same way. Another fun idea is to leave the inside of the design empty and fill around them instead

Step by steps

1 Print out the template from CraftWorld and measure to fit the frame you are using and cut to the size. Cut ¼” strips from white A4 cardstock.

2 Take one of the strips and using the template, adhere the strips around the paw edge. Cut off the extra and remove any glue. Wrap twice.

3 Cut four 1” strips of the blue paper, roll and make a coil almost to the end and let it loosen. Secure coil into each toe touching the edge.

4 Repeat with two 1” long strips of pink and purple paper. Use the white paper to roll and affix tight coils from three 1” and one ½” strips and fill the space.

Bonus templates Mel’s created templates for some of these makes, head to CraftWorld now to download them www.craftworld.com/ cms/papercraft-essentials 5 Cut four 1” strips of white paper, roll a loose coil and secure. Pinch one end to make a teardrop. Glue a five-petal flower to the top. 46

6 Add two more groups of three petals to the paw. Make coil strips in previous colours and add to the paw and fill with white tight coils.

7 Finish with a few matching gems and add the paw print into the frame.

Upcycled heart You’ll need All-occasion Quilling Kit upcycled wooden heart (painted and distressed) pearls template downloaded from CraftWorld

Step by step 1 Using an online template, die-cut or hand-draw a heart on the upcycled piece to help with placement. 2 Use the pink quilling paper to create a border using the heart shape, ending with a small coil at the top. 3 Cut three strips, small to large, and adhere these at the top-left side of the heart leaving a small space between each, making sure the ends touch the border. 4 Cut the pink strip into four, roll a coil and allow loosen a little and adhere. Pinch one end to make a teardrop. Make five of these. 5 Adhere the teardrops to the right side of the heart, creating a

flower shape. 6 Take strips of the pink and roll one end a few times, stop and roll the other making a double ended loose coil. 7 Secure this to the heart and create more different lengths and coils. Add all over but more towards the sides. 8 Make another half flower and affix against one of the double coils on the left side. 9 Cut 1½” and 1” lengths of the pink and roll and adhere the tight coils, securing these around the heart and around the larger coils and edges. 10 Finish with some pearls. To help the border stick, use small dabs of glue along the edge a little bit at a time and allow the glue to take hold before moving on. Push gently on the top of the quilling paper and remove any excess glue

Top Tip

You’ll need All-occasion Quilling Kit white 12"-square cardstock gems

Step by step 1 Cut ¼” strips from 12”-square cardstock, roll and glue making tight coils totalling 116 and cut six 6” strips to make smaller tight coils. 2 Once all the coils have been created, begin affixing them together to make the trinket box. Adhere six strips of seven and six more strips of five. 3 Adhere two of the 7 supports and two of the 5 columns to make the edge of the box. Make three edges in total. 4 For the lid and base, create a crisscross pattern in the middle using 12 more coils with the smaller one in the middle. 5 Take the base and adhere five coils on top of one another at each corner. Stick the third edge on top to creating the frame. 6 Cut 12 strips of the white cardstock. Take one, roll a coil, stop and move down the strip and roll again. The strip will overlap but stop once you are almost at the coil before. 7 Repeat all along the strip going

Trinket box in different directions. Position strips in the same way. 8 Adhere two of these strips into each side of the trinket box. Make sure they touch the sides and each other to create a wall. Add the other four into the spaces left in the lid. 9 Cut a strip of cardstock to fit inside the box and secure to create a base. 10 Add the four smaller coils to

the back of the lid, placing where it will fit inside the box and stop the lid slipping off. 11 Create a large flower for the lid using the loose coil and teardrops. Make six full lengths from orange, the same from red and five half-lengths from red. 12 Affix two yellow strips together, roll and secure the coil. 13 Group the larger petals in colour groups and glue. Stick one

on top of the other and add the yellow coil to the middle. Affix the smaller petals around. 14 To finish, add the flower to the lid and gems for final details. 47

Butterfly keyring You’ll need All-occasion Quilling Kit template downloaded from CraftWorld Mod Podge keyring computer & printer

Step by step 1 Print out the template from CraftWorld and use to help build the wings. 2 Cut a 6” purple strip and roll, let the coil loosen and glue. Pinch one end to create a teardrop. Create another three. 3 Wrap 6” blue quilling papers, going round twice and cutting off the excess, secure in place. Cut six more strips, this time 4”, and make more teardrops. 4 Place the two larger coils in the larger wings with the smaller one at the bottom and the other four go in the small wings. 5 Cut a strip of one ½” purple and 2” strip from blue. Roll the purple paper in a tight coil, glue and add the blue and continue to make a tight coil. Secure closed. Make 12 in total. 6 Add these two-coloured coils

to the larger circles. 7 Cut 2½” strips of blue and roll tight coils. Make enough to fill the smaller circles in the template. 8 Cut strips of 2", 1½" and 1” length of blue paper and roll to make tight coils. Use these to fill in around the wings. Adhere the pieces together. 9 Take the blue quilling papers and wrap around the wings twice. 10 For the body, cut a 10” length of purple paper, roll into a coil and allow to loosen before gluing. Make an ‘eye’ shape by pinching either end. Wrap in blue twice and add a small antenna. 11 Create the butterfly, glue large and small wings together then to one another. Place something small either side of the wings until the glue is dry to help the wings take a shape. 12 Affix the body to the middle once the glue is dry. 13 Cover the whole butterfly in Mod Podge or a gloss to seal it and make it sturdy. Once dry, add a keyring.

Stick some greaseproof paper to the template, making sure you can see through it. This will help when gluing the pieces together, stopping it sticking to the template and making it easier to remove

Cactus earrings You’ll need All-occasion Quilling Kit white & black cardstock jewellery findings & tools frame gems

Step by step 1 Take two of the quilling papers and affix together. Roll with the quilling tool and create a large tight coil and secure the end. Repeat three more times, creating three large tight coils. 2 Take one of the coils, slowly tease it into a tall bowl shape making sure the papers stay overlapped. Add glue inside to seal and hold together. 3 Make another bowl shape the same size as the first and make the last two a little smaller with a flatter bottom. Secure as before. 4 Adhere the tall and flat bottom pieces together to make the cactus body. Create the second and set aside to dry. 5 Cut strips of black cardstock 48

the same thickness as the quilling paper – 1⁄8”. Adhere the lengths together and make the same as the cactus creating the plant pot. 6 Roll a tight small coil and secure to the base of the plant pot wrapping around the edge some more card to give the pot a thick rim. Add glue inside to seal. 7 Roll a tight coil of orange and glue inside the plant pot. 8 Affix the cactus to each pot and attach white pearls as shown. Finish by gluing some earring findings into the top of the cactus.

Crafty idea! Instead of using pearls, cut 1⁄16” strips of ½” white papers, roll a tight coil, glue and flatten to make small spikes to stick to the cactus

Beginner's guide

The bold and BEAUTIFUL Break down those creative barriers with Vanessa’s fab new masterclass with how to learn the trapped Distress Oxide Ink blending technique

Vanessa Hodgson

T

rapped Distress Oxide Ink blending is another great way to use your Distress Oxide Ink. All you need is some ink, clear embossing powder and a heat tool and you are all set to go – throw in some stamps and the creations you can make with this technique are endless. For this technique, you start by simply blending some Distress Oxide Ink onto

60

cardstock and allow to fully dry before attempting to add embossing powder. The next step is to add a stamped image using clear embossing ink and cover the sticky ink with some clear embossing powder and heat-set. Now the fun starts, as once our embossed image has cooled we can add darker Distress Oxide Ink over the embossed image – the darker the ink the better, as darker inks make

the image really stand out. Once the piece is fully covered with the darker ink, wipe away the remaining ink that is sitting on the embossed image to reveal the colourful ink underneath; this is because we have trapped the lighter ink under the clear embossing powder. In this Beginner’s Guide I will show you how to make simple two colour-blend techniques to more elaborate multi-ink

BEGINNER'S GUIDE

blends. I will show you how to make a simple square card and how to turn your backgrounds into lovely shaped cards that will make your creations really stand out. The cards can be as simple or as elaborate as desired, a trapped background and a sentiment is more than enough to make a beautiful quick card, but we can also take it further by

creating different card shapes, adding frames and extra sparkle with sequins and gems. Distress Oxide Ink is great when spritzed with water and we can add this extra detail in when we make our trapped-ink backgrounds. A great thing to do when trying this technique is to create lots of backgrounds experimenting with

different colours and cardstocks, as different cardstocks will show colours differently so you will get lots of interesting results and have a good stash of backgrounds ready to make a quick card when needed. So get out your Distress Oxide Ink and stamps and enjoy experimenting with this really easy technique!

2 Ink up the stamp with VersaMark embossing ink and stamp onto the inked background.

Step by step 1 Cut stamping cardstock to 5” square; blend Mustard Seed ink across the top and Salty Ocean across the bottom, creating a green band in the middle where the two colours mix. 2 Dry thoroughly, dust with antistatic powder, ink up the mandala stamp using VersaMark ink and stamp into the centre of the card, cover with clear embossing powder, tap off the excess and heat-set to melt the powder. 3 Blend Ripe Persimmon ink over the top of the card and Chipped

Step by step 1 Using Microsoft Word or similar, add a 71⁄2x31⁄2” rectangle and the fish skeleton image. Adjust the size of the image, then copy and paste them to create a full

background panel. 2 Print this panel onto a piece of acetate, then sprinkle clear powder all over the ink. Tap off the excess and melt with a heat tool. 3 Using the lines from the printer rectangle, score to create flaps which will wrap around the background, creating an edge-toedge shaker. Cut away the corners of the flaps to allow them to fold. 4 To create the background, ink blend a rainbow and mix the mica powder with water and splatter the blending. Cut this panel down to be the same size as the 71⁄2x31⁄2” acetate rectangle.

5 To assemble the shaker, add double-sided tape to the underside of the flaps, have the heat-embossed side on the inside, so the front is smooth. Remove the tape from three of the flaps and wrap them around the background, creating an open pocket. Add confetti sequins, remove the tape from the last flap and secure. 6 Add the edge-to-edge shaker onto the card base using more double-sided tape. 7 Print the cat digi stamp and a sentiment onto Neenah cardstock, colour and fussy-cut. 8 For the sentiment, die-cut with a scalloped edge die and cut a piece of mirror card with a slightly larger stitched circle die. 9 Add the sentiment onto the mirror card and add to the card using 3D foam pads. ave you ever wanted to try and create a pop-up element on the inside of your card? Maybe you’ve been put off by the fact that you need a specific die for the job. Well, there are no excuses now, as this masterclass walks you through some pop-up ideas using dies you already own. I’ve included some beginner versions, working

Christine shows you that creating 3D cards doesn’t have to be scary or require lots of fancy equipment up to some more advanced ideas, using a different technique for each card, so you can have a read and decide what you think will work best for you. As well as giving written step-by-steps for five different pop-up techniques, I’ve included a photographic step-by-step to give you a visual aid for one of the more complex methods. The nice thing about a pop-up card is the surprise element. When the recipient opens

the card, they’re probably not expecting the inside to be just as pretty as the exterior. And you can give your pop-up a different ‘wow’ factor depending on which method you choose to adopt. But you can also add a window to the front of the card so they get a sneak peek that there’s something else waiting on the inside of the card too. The simplest pop-up just uses a generic shaped die, but once you start to have a think, you can use border dies, intricate dies and even aperture dies too.

Step by step 1 Decorate the inside of the card blank with blue and yellow patterned paper, then die-cut solid and intricate doily pieces from white cardstock, patterned paper and yellow ink-blended cardstock. Assemble one doily for the inside, giving it a solid perimeter and a cut-out centre. Back the aperture with vellum, then add an intricate die-cut on top. 2 Score the doily from Step 1 with three parallel lines – one down the centre, and also 0.51cm from each side. Fold the centre as a mountain fold and the two sides as a valley fold.

3 Adhere one small tab to the inside of the card on one side, then fold the doily flat as if closing the card, and remove the backing from the tape on the other flap. Close the card so it sticks in the right place. 4 Layer a second doily for the front of the card. Create a yellow ink-blended and ink-swiped background, then emboss with the embossing folder. 5 Layer all the elements using extra patterned paper along with gems and glitter marker details, then add a die-cut sentiment to finish.

Line up the centre of the main heart with the score line, and adhere the other two tabs to the inside of the card.

3 Run just the aperture die through the die-cutting machine and fold the centre crease.

4 Using a score board, score 3cm in from each side of the card blank.

5 Re-inforce the folds with the card creaser. Add double-sided tape to both the 3cm-wide tabs.

6 Place the die-cut card blank directly over the other card blank then hold the aperture pieces in place with low-tack tape. 10 Use Copic and Nuvo markers to colour and affix around the aperture. Add patterned paper inside and add light grey Copic hearts as shown. 11 Swipe Distress Ink onto a white 12x17cm panel, add water and flick with a Shimmer pen.

7 Fold each flap up one at a time and remove the tape backing and secure in place.

8 The open card should stand as shown with the pop-up element sticking out.

Colour the die-cuts when adding them to a white background and leave them white when adding them to a vibrant coloured background – this helps tie the inside and outside designs together

9 When closing the card, fold the pop-up back in towards the spine for ease. Die-cut three white floral elements separate flower dies from patterned papers.

12 Arrange the white pansy cluster die-cut patterned paper flowers and gems. Die-cut the sentiment from white card and vellum, and secure to finish.
