Crisis, heartbreak, joy—the real life drama in Boston’s hospitals unfolded on national television in ABC’s primetime medical documentary “BostonMed.” Children’s Hospital Boston was one of three hospitals featured. On October 28, Children’s Circle of Care members met some of the “BostonMed” cast at the 2010 Circle of Care Fall Reception.


Children’s Circle of Care (CCC) honors, connects and educates individuals, couples, family foundations and privately held companies that give $10,000 or more to a member hospital in a single year. Children's Hospital Boston is one of 25 member hospitals throughout North America.


Circle of Care members Ami Cipolla and Steven Samuels were gracious hosts, welcoming nearly 100 people into their Brookline home.


The evening included Q and A with doctors and a patient featured on “BostonMed.�


Guests enjoyed refreshments, good company and hearing about the cast’s experience on the show.


The “BostonMed” Cast

Elizabeth Blume, MD, Gary Fleisher, MD, patient Sara Dumas and Francis Fynn-Thompson, MD


Elizabeth Blume, MD medical director of the cardiomyopathy, heart failure, and transplant programs Blume, a cardiologist, cares for children with heart muscle diseases, end-stage heart disease and heart transplants. She also coordinates research trials of machines that support children’s failing hearts.

Gary Fleisher, MD physician-in-chief A founder of the field of pediatric emergency medicine, Fleisher has helped victims of the World Trade Center bombing, Hurricane Katrina and the recent earthquake in Haiti.


Francis Fynn-Thompson, MD surgical director of heart and lung transplantation and the mechanical support program Fynn-Thompson, a pediatric cardiac surgeon, specializes in repairing complex congenital heart disease and managing end-stage heart and lung disease. He leads medical missions to Ghana annually to perform free pediatric heart surgeries.

Joshua Nagler, MD staff physician Nagler is a member of Children’s Critical Care Transport Team. A dedicated teacher, he deferred his acceptance to medical school to teach math and science.


Rahul Rathod, MD pediatric cardiologist

Sara Dumas heart-transplant recipient

Rathod researches more sophisticated ways to measure ventricular performance using magnets, radio waves and computers to avoid harmful X-rays.

Diagnosed with a heart condition at age 4, Dumas’ health was stable throughout most of her childhood, but deteriorated in high school. She received a heart transplant at Children’s and returned home just 13 days later. Dumas is currently a freshman biology major at the University of Connecticut with plans to become a pediatric cardiologist. >> Read Sara’s story in her own words.
