Boston University Tanglewood Institute (BUTI) is recognized internationally as a premier summer training program for aspiring young musicians and is the only program of its kind associated with one of the world’s great symphony orchestras. Under the guidance of distinguished professionals, and in the presence of the Boston Symphony Orchestra (BSO), students are immersed in an atmosphere of extraordinary music making fueled by high artistic standards, rigorous programming, and a rich legacy of learning and performance.

The moment you step onto the grounds, you join a community that empowers students to be artists. No one who spends a summer at Tanglewood leaves untouched by the experience.

As a student at BUTI, you become part of the Tanglewood continuum – a rich and expanding family of artists.

From your peer musicians in training, to teachers who inspire, all the way through to the TMC Fellows, members of the BSO, and rock stars in the field, you can see yourself every step of the way.

All it takes is one summer and you’ll forever be a part of this community of artists, educators, leaders, and advocates. From BUTI, the BSO, and beyond, your future is here.

I would 100% recommend the BUTI program to any young musician. It is a tough six weeks, but to call it life changing is an understatement. It was truly a privilege working with some of the finest musicians in the country and being able to learn from them.”

EXPERIENCE THE MAGIC

magic

Beyond an exceptional music education, what makes a summer at BUTI unforgettable is the magic of Tanglewood. It’s more than just being on stage at Seiji Ozawa Hall or your perspectiveshattering lesson with a BSO member. It’s the surround-sound feeling of belonging and the hushed anticipation right before the downbeat. It’s coming from the city and seeing green everywhere and the smell of sunset mixed with dewy grass. It’s all of this and more—it’s JOY.

It’s hard to put into words, but whether performing at Seiji Ozawa Hall, listening to a BSO worldpremiere from the Tanglewood lawn, or meeting your idol for the first time backstage, the magic is there. From the moment you arrive on campus, the seed is planted and will continue to grow long after you leave; it will always be part of you. This captivating feeling is unlike anything else—you have to experience it yourself.
