A Note from the Director I haven’t decided if I am proud to say or more ashamed that I have seen every episode of RuPaul’s Drag Race. Every episode! That’s 14 seasons, 175 episodes, 184 queens. I love the art of drag. So when I read THE LEGEND OF GEORGIA MCBRIDE I was instantly obsessed. The play is a tribute to the art of drag with all its glitz, glamor and fabulousness. I knew immediately that I had to share this story with the BU community. The art of drag has become a cultural phenomenon. Thanks to shows like Drag Race, RuPaul has dragged drag into every living room in America - and beyond. As I started my research for the play, I found a wonderful book titled, Why Drag? The book is a collection of over a hundred drag queens reflecting and philosophizing about what drag means to them. The resounding answer is that drag is a freedom of expression which allows them to be something, someone else for a while. The iconic Lady Bunny states, “Drag is my armor, my mask that gives me confidence - confidence to read the audience, to tear it up on the dance floor, or to perform on stage.” For the lead character Casey, this is exactly what Georgia McBride is for him. Georgia McBride is his alter ego that allows him to transform from the broke, naive Casey to the glamourous Georgia. From the very first scene, as Casey transforms into Elvis Presley the audience is watching a transformation happen on stage. The designers, actors and I latched on to the reverberating theme of transformation. We asked ourselves, how does the world of the show change from beginning to end? For the actors I asked, how does your character change, grow or transform throughout the play? Because not only do the characters change externally, but internally they transform their way of thinking. That’s what I love about the play, below the glitzy surface, THE LEGEND OF GEORGIA MCBRIDE reminds us that the only way to live is if we grow. The only way to grow is to change, learn and transform.
