NOTES FROM THE DIRECTOR Much Ado About Nothing explores the range and capacity for human emo on. Part of the roman c comedy genre, the play is light, fun, frivolous, and earthy, exploring love, joy, and generosity of spirit. Yet at the same me, it does not ignore the opposite extremes humans are prone to feel, including jealousy, anxiety, insecurity, and hate. Much of the comedy of the play comes from games of love, the classic ba le of the sexes. Running parallel to this is the ba le between love and hate within each character’s consciousness. Conflict in the plot arises when an individual’s hate swells and overpowers their love. This is a problem that can only be resolved by someone stepping out of the cycle to offer forgiveness. Because Hero takes this very step in Much Ado, Robert Grams Hunter and others place the play in a subgenre of roman c comedy: the comedy of forgiveness. Hunter says, “The comedy of forgiveness proclaims that human nature is such that any social structure must finally depend on mutual forbearance—on forgiving and being forgiven.” In a me where many individuals and groups of people have reason and opportunity to hate, our produc on explores the ques on, “what would happen if people choose to love and forgive instead?”
