SHELAGH DELANEY Shelagh Delaney (1938 – 2011) was a Bri sh playwright and screenwriter. She is best known for her debut work A Taste of Honey, which premiered at the Theatre Workshop in 1958, when Delaney was only nineteen, and later opened on the West End in 1959. Joan Plowright won the Tony Award for Best Actress in a Play for her performance as Jo in the original Broadway produc on, which also featured Angela Lansbury as her mother and ran for over 300 performances. The play, set in Delaney’s na ve Salford, an industrial neighbor of Manchester, was inspired by a dislike for Terence Ra gan’s genteel Varia on on a Theme. Though Delaney was o en grouped by cri cs with the “angry young men” like John Osborne and Alan S llitoe who were challenging the tradi onal reserve and gen lity of Bri sh high culture that Ra gan epitomized, she insisted that the comparison overlooked those writers’ individual styles and that her wri ng was mo vated not by anger but honesty. She wrote, she said, to record life as she saw it in urban Northern England, where “people are not usually shown as they are. For in actual fact they are very alive and cynical. I write as people talk.” Delaney followed A Taste of Honey with another portrayal of working class life in the play The Lion in Love, which did not achieve the former’s cri cal acclaim. She subsequently published a well-received collec on of short stories, Sweetly Sings the Donkey (1963), and several screenplays – including The White Bus and Charlie Bubbles (1967) and Dance with a Stranger (1985) – and radio plays – including Tell Me a Film (2003) and Country Life (2004). Her screenplay for the 1961 film adap on of A Taste of Honey, which she co-wrote with director Tony Richardson, won the BAFTA Award for Best Bri sh Screenplay and the Writer’s Guild of Great Britain Award in 1962. Delaney was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature in 1985. Shelagh Delaney’s play, A Taste of Honey, was part of Britain’s cultural revolu on of the late 1950s, when well-made plays and films gave way to the gri y realism of working-class life. It was the era of kitchen-sink drama and Angry Young Men. Delaney, who died of cancer just short of her 72nd birthday, was an Angry Young Woman.

The following is the cover le er Delaney sent with her original manuscript to Joan Li lewood of the Theatre Royal Stra ord East:

Dear Miss Littlewood, Along with this letter comes a play, the first I have written. I wondered if you would read it through and send it back to me because no matter what sort of theatrical atrocity it might be, it isn’t valueless so far as I’m concerned. A fortnight ago I didn’t know the theatre existed, but a young man, anxious to improve my mind, took me to the Opera House in Manchester and I came away after the performance having suddenly realised that at last, after nineteen years of life, I had discovered something that meant more to me than myself. I sat down and thought. The following day I bought a packet of paper and borrowed an unbelievable typewriter which I still have great difficulty in using. I set to and produced this little epic--don’t ask me why-I’m quite unqualified for anything like this. But at least I finished it and if, from among the markings and the typing errors and the spelling mistakes, you can gather a little sense from what I have written--or a little nonsense--I should be extremely grateful for your criticism--though I hate criticism of any kind. I want to write for the theatre, but I know so very little about it. I know nothing, have nothing--except a willingness to learn--and intelligence. Yours sincerely, Shelagh Delaney
