SOUL SEARCHING For years we’ve experimented with advanced materials and came to recognize the benefits of producing a board from advanced plastics – lightweight, strength and durability. Unfortunately, simple plastic is, well ... ugly. At BOTE we don’t do ugly. If we were going to develop a board from advanced plastics, it needed it to have character and soul like the rest of our line-up. With our new proprietary Gatorshell technology we’ve created an advanced plastics board with the look and feel of our classic construction, resulting in another stunningly beautiful BOTE.

SEEMINGLY SEAMLESS A challenge we faced while building boards from advanced plastics was fusing the upper and lower halves of the board without leaving unsightly seams. Most manufacturers simply accept this as the way it has to be. It doesn’t. With our Gatorshell boards, we’ve achieved seamless construction by combining all new materials with ballistics grade composites. The result, a no compromise outer shell that is smooth, solid, and tough…very tough.

6X TOUGHER The goal of utilizing advanced plastics is to create a tougher product with increased impact resistance. According to energy impact comparisons, our Gatorshell board achieved 6x tougher construction vs. our hand-crafted epoxy boards. We conducted extensive tests within our Darkroom lab, not only with our own products, but also products from other manufacturers to ensure that Gatorshell outperformed anything it came up against. 6x force was the maximum our equipment was able to measure, which resulted in zero damage to our Gatorshell board.

ho is the happier man, he who has braved the storm of life and lived, or he who has stayed securely on shore and merely existed? We could have stayed on shore, in the status quo, played it safe and moved on. But where is the fun in that? We wanted to wander into the storm!

The unknown breeds fear and excitement but can also spark some radical change. Change, in our case is embodied by the all new Rover project. So, we decided to make a trip to the Florida Keys with our motley crew and embark on a not-so-harrowing adventure with the main goal of putting the new Rover through it’s paces.

Thanks to our pals at Mellow Ventures in Key West for dialing in the madness for us, because of them we all returned as happy campers.

o many, yoga is a form of exercising. To others, yoga is a lifestyle filled with morals to live by on a day-to-day basis. In an effort to bring together a group of people to learn and practice the virtues of yoga all while being immersed in nature, BOTE Ambassador TJ Mangrum put together a retreat in Cape San Blas, FL.

A couple of months ago, I was brainstorming an idea that had been on my mind for quite some time.Yoga retreats these days tend to be incredibly expensive with overwhelming travel. To most, this is not feasible monetarily or time-wise. Which is when a lightbulb went off—we have so many amazing state and national parks within driving distance in the South East, so why not create a legitimately affordable and accessible yoga/SUP retreat? And this is where the retreat began to take fruition.

When I first considered what I wanted a retreat to be-besides being affordable and accessible, I also wanted to leave the lightest “foot print” in our state parks, as possible. I wanted to offer people space to breathe and exist in nature. I believe, for many of us, experiencing nature in direct support of us can be foreign. Living

solely on the support of the raw ground beneath us isn’t something most people are often able to experience. To be in nature and experience the sun at mid-day and the stars in the evening, can only help with our awareness of how we daily interact with nature and our environment. I know that when I spend even an hour

in the woods or on the water not only do I feel more abundant, but I also

Once I had the boards and destination lined up, I collected the most amazing group of Yoga teachers to facilitate this project with me. Jessica McChesney (everything outdoor/nature loving guru), Erik Brownsword (spreadsheet/ love/Harry Potter enthusiast), Charlie Graham (life enthusiast), Elizabeth Ocheltree (spirituality enthusiast). We planned out every detail of the construction of our retreat. Through their enthusiasm and hard work, we were able to collect donations for food from Patagonia and Suja, as well as Lara Bars to munch on throughout the weekend. These donations helped create an even lower cost for the retreat which enabled us to donate over 50% of our profits to charity. We donated directly back to St Joseph’s Peninsula State Park as well as Cultivate Union, a charity for yoga education. We gave back to what gave to us.

During our three day retreat we practiced land yoga on the beach, SUP yoga in the bay, beautiful story time by the fire, meditation on the beach at sunrise, stargazing and meditation under the New-moon at night, SUP adventures around the peninsula, a ceremonial fire celebration, and ate AMAZING yummy food. All under the umbrella theme of Ahimsa.

Ahimsa is a principle term used in the yoga community that means nonviolence. Non-violence to anything; nature, others, the Self, etc. We spoke of treating others and ourselves with compassion, grace, and understanding.

We asked campers to recognize the vocabulary they use within their own thoughts and how they choose to speak to themselves; to understand and practice Ahimsa in whatever medium they were able.

This retreat was a surreal experience for me. I authentically feel as though all of the people, all of the support, all of the magic was deliberate. Everything fell into place with ease and positive, purposeful work. People felt impacted

OTE ambassador, Landon Mace travelled the world while serving his country, which only made him appreciate his country, especially his home state of Oregon even more.

With full support from his wife Kelsey, Landon follows his true passion – fly fishing.

Landon appreciates the simple things nowadays, like being able to grow out his hair and have a real mustache, but it’s really all about the fish. It’s all become very clear for him. “Before I go to bed, I’m sitting there thinking about fish, when I wake up, I’m thinking about fish.That’s the reality of it. It’s a passion that really just consumes me.”

It was a natural evolution for Landon to become a guide on the rivers he knows so well. Now, on any day, Landon can be found wading, casting, tying flies and guiding others who share his passion for fly fishing.

Landon doesn’t take for granted the place he calls home. He’s surrounded by everything he loves – his wife, the mountains, and the rivers. He spent years serving his country and now he gets to do what makes him the happiest. That usually involves grabbing his dog and a fly rod, then heading out to chase fish.

I

t’s true, getting to the untouched places left in the world takes a commitment to real adventure. When your destination is only referenced by the weather service as a grid number, and can only be accessed by float plane, you know you’re on the right track.

Division No. 18 is in Saskatchewan Canada’s far north, and is as remote as it gets. Like, Alaska North remote. It’s frozen over for most of the year, and for most Americans, they’d be hard pressed to point it out on a map. So why go there?

Inside Division 18 is Milton Lake, and specifically the Milton Lake Lodge. We heard that it’s one of the best places on earth to fish for Northern Pike, and as far as we knew, we were going to be the first people ever to do that on stand up paddleboards. Everything at the lodge has to be flown in, from food to ATVs...everything. Because of the small cargo area on the float plane, bringing hard boards wasn’t an option, so we packed up the inflatables and headed out.

Our plan was simple; fly fish with a local guide and some seasoned anglers, one of them being Rebekka Redd, famed in the fly fishing world, but brand new to standup paddleboard fishing. She expressed to us a desire to challenge herself, and took this one head on.

The plan worked, the Pike fishing was off the charts, and Rebekka was killing it. We seemed to land fish after fish. Even the new anglers got in on the action and quickly became enthralled with SUP fishing.

You could creep up on these huge pike just sitting on the bottom and they wouldn’t even move. Everyone loved this new perspective that the boards provided.

The weather was epic the entire first day, with perfect paddle fishing conditions. We soon learned how quickly that can change. The following few days were completely unpredictable. Sunny skies and fairly warm temperatures would quickly give way to dark clouds, high winds and storms that had us hunkering down for protection from lightening and hail. As harsh as that sounds, it was just all part of this great adventure, and even if I could, I wouldn’t change a second of it.

Overall, the trip was magical, almost surreal. I got to escape with great friends, create some awesome new memories, and ultimately take part in a new experience that went beyond myself, and extended to our entire crew. The fishing was incredible, and the people who run the lodge were amazing.

Not many people know about The Milton Lake Lodge and Division no.18. I used to be one of them, but now that I do, I’ll certainly never forget it.

t’s a challenge. Balancing work and leisure, raising your kids, focusing on the simple things that really matter. For the majority of us, myself included, the struggle to do so is very real. But in reality, it’s

the accumulation of these diverse events that make you who you are.

Growing up, I spent a lot of my time at my grandparent’s house in the woods. Playing in the dirt, hunting for food, and spending time with family were not only the basis of how I spent my childhood, but also the building blocks for who I am as a person.

As I grew up and moved away to bigger cities and spent more time in the office than in daylight, I began to really appreciate the lifestyle that living in the outdoors offered.

Now, with three kids, I realize the importance of exposing them to the simpler life. Teaching them to work with their hands and step away from our technologically oversaturated world is not easy, but I find that when we leave our everyday lives, step off the grid, and just enjoy each other’s company and everything nature has to offer, it brings us back to the fundamental basics of what it’s all about.
