Bow & Arrow Magazine October / November 2014

Page 1

“Who knew death could be so beautiful?” Those words have the ability to recall a warm autumn afternoon driving down Mississippi Boulevard, off Summit Avenue. The reds, golds and oranges, even veering into pinks, demanded our attention and admiration. But never before had we taken the time to realize that it is only through the process of the leaves dying that we are able to experience and witness such natural beauty. Life thrusts us down a path, sometimes stumbling, but sometimes running. We come across obstacles, triumphs, second chances and inspiring people. Through the obstacles, we discover the true colors of our spirit. The reds, golds and oranges in our hearts are revealed when we have the courage to charge forward, unabashedly, down this unknown road. Thank you for being a part of our journey. Whether you’ve supported us from the beginning, or if you’re still wondering if Bow & Arrow is a hunting magazine, we’re happy you’re here. In this issue, you’ll find cozier looks to ease us into these colder months we know and love in Minnesota. In addition to the flannel, cable knits and leather, we’ve been fortunate in every way to have collaborated with incredible talent, further amplifying our Up North roots. Bow & Arrow Magazine

KATIE DOSEN fashion editor

VANESSA FANGMEIER creative director

vanessa@bowandarrowmag.com

In kindergarten, Katie was the girl that wore the 101 Dalmatians outfit, matching beret included. Although some may not have been fond of her favorite birthday gift, that didn’t bother her one bit. Her unique appreciation for fashion grew throughout the years and led her to major in Apparel Merchandising. After college, she landed her dream job at a modeling agency. Working there inspires her every day. When she’s not doing something fashion related, you can find her at the lake, taste testing all the chocolate chip cookies Minneapolis has to offer, or cuddling with her parents’ dog, Chloe.

Vanessa moved from Buffalo Lake (try finding it on the state map without using the index) to St. Paul, MN to get a degree in Communications and Journalism from the University of St. Thomas. She’s more into St. Paul than Minneapolis, prefers late nights to early mornings, takes her coffee with cream (no sugar), and has an addiction to Target that ought to be seriously diagnosed. When she’s not working on design for Bow & Arrow, she’s out ordering pho with her fiancé, pinning images of Beagle puppies on Pinterest, or catching up on episodes of The Voice and The Bachelor.

JACLYN HANSEL photography director

LAURA WIERING lifestyle editor

A natural explorer, this girl enjoys new and unique experiences, always with her camera by her side. From repelling off of 20-story buildings to navigating the caves in an abandoned brewery, she craves adventure. After studying visual communications at Iowa State University (go Cyclones!), Jaclyn moved to the Twin Cities to pursue a career in photography. From photojournalism to fashion, she loves it all. In her free time you can find her discovering Twin Cities cuisine, salsa dancing around town, and dreaming about future travels.

“You’re like a girl version of John Wayne.” What does that mean? Laura isn’t really sure either, but somehow it’s perfect and she has decided to take it as a compliment. From the unpredictable nature of her day job in advertising, to spontaneous weeknight concerts at First Ave, she takes whatever life throws at her and enjoys a good challenge. Standing at 5’2”, she has an impressive heel collection, sews as a creative outlet, and dearly loves to laugh. Oh yeah, and she went to college for painting. Noted.

CONTRIBUTORS KYLE JOHNSONMACPHERSON Kyle is the Photography Director at Periscope. He has been there since 1997. When not out traveling and shooting on location, he can be found in the photo studio creating outstanding product and still life photography. As a father of two active boys his free time and weekends are spent chauffeuring, cheering and supporting from the sidelines. Naturally, he has a camera in hand.

SAMANTHA PERRY Samantha’s perpetual curiosity has led her to be a very versatile (but also very confused) human being. She hasn’t really figured out what her calling is in life, but right now working as an Art Director at Pixel Farm and styling editorial shoots are what makes her happy. Other things that make her happy are a good run, a well written suspense novel, deciding what to wear in the morning, nerding out in an art museum, watching scary movies, a late night hike in the snow, the city she lives in, and frozen Reese’s.

ELYZABETH KENT Business owner and Hair and Makeup Artist, Elyzabeth Kent, founded Spa Beauty in 2009. Having worked in the beauty industry since 2002, Elyzabeth envisioned the amenities of a luxury salon and the experience of a boutique being brought directly to the client. This vision lead her to create Spa Beauty—an on-location bridal and beauty agency that specializes in you.
