Two years. That’s a long time, right? People can change over the course of weeks and months, and how much more they change over a year or two. Each of us has been reshaped in the two years since we started Bow & Arrow—each in different ways, but changed nonetheless. Change is good, so long as it’s in the right direction. We’ve made goals for ourselves, pushed our limits, kept at it even when we wanted to quit—and we’re so glad we didn’t. Having this project to keep us engaged, creative, and challenged has resulted in some very positive transformations in ourselves over the last two years. But, it’s not the blog or the magazine itself that has brought about those changes. It’s the individuals we’ve worked with, those we’ve met, and most especially our group of four. We started out as acquaintances but have grown to be great friends—friends who keep one another accountable, challenge one another’s abilities and skills, encourage during the difficult times, and celebrate during the joyous ones. Of all the changes that have happened in our lives over the past two years, our growing friendship is easily the best one. In kindergarten, Katie was the girl that wore the 101 Dalmatians outfit, matching beret included. Although some may not have been fond of her favorite birthday gift, that didn’t bother her one bit. Her unique appreciation for fashion grew throughout the years and led her to major in Apparel Merchandising. After college, she landed her dream job at a modeling agency. Working there inspires her every day. When she’s not doing something fashion related, you can find her at the lake, taste testing all the chocolate chip cookies Minneapolis has to offer, or cuddling with her parents’ dog, Chloe.
Vanessa moved from Buffalo Lake (try finding it on the state map without using the index) to St. Paul, MN to get a degree in Communications and Journalism from the University of St. Thomas. She’s more into St. Paul than Minneapolis, prefers late nights to early mornings, takes her coffee with cream (no sugar), and has an addiction to Target that ought to be seriously diagnosed. When she’s not working on design for Bow & Arrow, she’s out ordering pho with her fiancé, pinning images of Beagle puppies on Pinterest, or catching up on episodes of The Voice and The Bachelor.

A natural explorer, this girl enjoys new and unique experiences, always with her camera by her side. From repelling off of 20-story buildings to navigating the caves in an abandoned brewery, she craves adventure. After studying visual communications at Iowa State University (go Cyclones!), Jaclyn moved to the Twin Cities to pursue a career in photography. From photojournalism to fashion, she loves it all. In her free time you can find her discovering Twin Cities cuisine, salsa dancing around town, and dreaming about future travels.
“You’re like a girl version of John Wayne.” What does that mean? Laura isn’t really sure either, but somehow it’s perfect and she has decided to take it as a compliment. From the unpredictable nature of her day job in advertising, to spontaneous weeknight concerts at First Ave, she takes whatever life throws at her and enjoys a good challenge. Standing at 5’2”, she has an impressive heel collection, sews as a creative outlet, and dearly loves to laugh. Oh yeah, and she went to college for painting. Noted.

CONTRIBUTORS ATHENA PELTON Athena Pelton is a photographer and hand lettering artist in the Twin Cities, and just launched her very own style and fashion blog, &HELEN. She has an affinity towards loud music, good coffee, motorcycles, and friends that feel like family. She strives to lead her life with kindness, humility, imperfection, and wit, and has a passion for authenticity and documenting the beauty in the seemingly mundane.
GUNNAR COOK Gunnar’s passion for photography has always gone hand-in-hand with his craving for adventure. He loves to travel and explore, feeling most at home when abroad or spending time with old friends and making new ones. What are you most proud of over the last two years of Bow & Arrow Magazine? JACLYN: My favorite part of the last couple years has been meeting so many talented people. I knew only a couple people when I first moved to the Cities and through BAM I have made so many incredible friends. KATIE: I’m most proud of how we’ve all grown as people. The four girls that started the magazine aren’t the same girls today. It may sound cliché, because whether it be a day or a year, you’re constantly learning and developing, but it’s cool to witness right in front of your own eyes. LAURA: We started with nothing but talent and the desire to do something creative, and look how far we’ve come. We’re continuing to build this brand, grow our readership and optimize our content. It’s easy to get frustrated if the numbers or response aren’t what we wish, but then I look at our trajectory and progress, and I am completely pleased. VANESSA: I’m proud of the fact that we’ve constantly improved. From the first issue to the most previous one, there has been incredible growth across all of our talents. I love that we’ve all pushed ourselves and each other to keep doing better and not settling for status quo.

What accessory or piece of clothing have you had for years, but can’t let go of? JACLYN: A little, pink fringe skirt that I used to wear for ballroom dance competitions. KATIE: When it comes to clothes I have a very difficult time letting go, so this is a tough one! I’ll go with my Jessica Simpson furry boots. Had them for years and they’re still going strong. LAURA: I have a MN Twins 1987 World Series Champs sweatshirt. It’s a boys XL that I found at Goodwill in high school. The sweatshirt is older than I am, but it’s my favorite to wear on a lazy Saturday, or pair with heels and an oxford. VANESSA: I have footie pajamas that I bought with some friends my freshman year of college. They’re made for a 10-year old girl (pink and purple and hearts all over), but even though I maybe put them on for giggles once every winter, I just can’t part with them.

If you could swap wardrobes with anyone, who would it be? JACLYN: Penelope Cruz. KATIE: Easy. Mary-Kate & Ashley Olsen. LAURA: Kate Middleton. I mean, Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge. Can I have her title of nobility as well? VANESSA: Zooey Deschanel.

Do you have a favorite vintage piece or family heirloom? JACLYN: My aunt’s mother was a very fashionable lady back in the day. When she passed away my aunt gifted me quite of few of her pieces. My favorite is a little black clutch with pink and gold roses on it. KATIE: My mom had been given a beautiful, delicate ring from my grandma. You don’t see rings like this these days, and she recently handed it down to me. I get so many compliments and every time I look down I’m reminded of these two wonderful women. LAURA: I was given a piece of jewelry that belonged to my late Grandma Ann. It’s a cream and champagne satin collar with hand-beaded pearl detailing. I always think of my grandma as a hard-working farmer’s wife, but this piece reminds me of her delicate, fashionable side. VANESSA: In the late 70s or early 80s, one of my aunts played in a small town softball league. The red and white baseball tee with the vintage screen-printed “Stewart Lions” is one of my favorite pieces that I won’t let go of for a long time.

What do you want people to take away from Bow & Arrow Magazine? JACLYN: I want them to be inspired to start new things on their own. To pursue talents they have and to live intentional lives. KATIE: I want people to feel empowered. At times of self-doubt, I’ve looked to the magazine for strength and it’s provided me with just that! LAURA: You are in charge of your destiny. If you don’t like your situation, take control and change it into something great. VANESSA: If you have an idea or a dream, see it out and make it happen. You’re usually the only thing standing in the way of doing the things you want to do.
