we are taking a longer-term view of improving our list for the future...

2019 C H A I R M A N’S R E P O RT Dear Members and supporters, Thank you for your ongoing support and commitment to the Port Adelaide Football Club. This season again served up its share of challenges. As an entire club, we fell short of our expectations of playing finals. At the beginning of each season we strive to play finals to therefore give ourselves a chance of competing for the ultimate prize – the AFL premiership. It’s why we exist. To that end, we are disappointed in 2019 and we acknowledge that.

On the other hand, however, we strongly believe we are far better positioned today than we were 12 months ago in pursuit of our next premiership. Yes, we have finished 10th in consecutive seasons but if you look below the surface you will see the clear path we are on. Our list development over the last 12 months has been significant. We added three elite young players to our group – Connor Rozee, Xavier Duursma and Zak Butters – in last year’s draft and this year we’ve added more high-end

4 PORT ADELAIDE FOOTBALL CLUB YEARBOOK 2019 4 PORT ADELAIDE FOOTBALL CLUB YEARBOOK 2019

young talent to our list with the inclusion of Miles Bergman, Mitch Georgiades, Dylan Williams and Jackson Mead, along with rookies Jake Pasini and Trent Burgoyne. And how good is it to have some famous Port Adelaide names back at Alberton with the addition of Mead and Burgoyne, as father-son recruits of Darren Mead and Peter Burgoyne? What is equally exciting for us is the next tier of younger players, those that are 23 years and under. Think of the

development of the likes of Dan Houston, Darcy Byrne-Jones, Tom Clurey, Karl Amon, Joel Garner, Riley Bonner and Ryan Burton who have all improved their football significantly in the past 12 months. We are taking a longer-term view of improving our list for the future but we will not bottom out. We reset at the end of 2018 and are building towards our next premiership, for that’s why we exist, to win premierships. The age profile of our list is young, one of the youngest in

the competition. This season we had the fifth most players aged 23 and under in the competition. In August, AFL Media compiled a report on the AFL’s best list of 23 and under. We ranked third on that list. Hopefully by August 2020 our ranking will have improved even more in relation to our youth. We have six Rising Star nominees on our list from this and the previous year: Burton, Houston, Powell-Pepper, Bonner, Duursma and Rozee, who was runner-up this year in the AFL Rising Star award. And in 2019 we had the most games played by players aged 20 and under in the competition. It is clear that we have invested in quality youth. And this is where Ken Hinkley deserves the utmost credit. Whilst it could have been easy for Ken to promote a short-term view to protect the win/loss count in 2019, he selflessly and unequivocally bought into the view that the club had to make tough calls at the end of last season that would set the club up moving forward to our next premiership. Moreover, in the recent trade period and AFL draft, Ken has continued to buy into this strategy. Ken should be applauded for this. It was and continues to be a courageous decision made for the betterment of the Port Adelaide Football Club moving forward. And he has been judged by certain quarters throughout the season who have failed to see the bigger picture at play here. I reiterate. This club is here to win premierships, not limp from one finals campaign to another, making up the numbers. We exist to win premierships, not just to make finals. I have mentioned the exciting youth we have on our list but I do want to acknowledge our senior players, particularly Travis Boak.

Travis has had an outstanding season again, polling our most votes at the Brownlow Medal and of course winning the John Cahill Medal as our best and fairest player. Equally as importantly, on Brownlow night Travis was also a finalist in the prestigious Jim Stynes Community Award for the work he does volunteering for the Childhood Cancer Association. In an era of unpredictable player movement Travis stands out like a beacon as the player that stood by Port Adelaide in our darkest time when it could have been so easy for him to go home. Travis is a credit to himself and his family and I know you will join me in congratulating him for all the work he does both on and off the field. From a commercial perspective we are incredibly proud to have welcomed GFG into the Port Adelaide family. Sanjeev and his team have been brilliant to work with and I thank them for their amazing support this year and moving forward. Both Port Adelaide and the team at GFG are so aligned with their thinking and their values of family, sustainability and change also resonate strongly with us. To be able to integrate GFG into our club this year has been a major highlight and I thank everyone involved who has brought this wonderful partnership to life. As will be revealed ahead of our AGM in February, our financial result is better than last year’s and we’ll be paying down debt by $1 million this year which is a very pleasing result. We have so much to look forward to as a club. As we all know, next year we will celebrate our 150th anniversary. Just think about that for a moment. The Port Adelaide Football Club, established in 1870, proudly boasting 36 SANFL premierships; four Champions of Australia titles; the only suburban football club from outside of Victoria to be elevated into the national competition; and an AFL flag in 2004 after only eight seasons in the competition.

And now let’s consider when some of the other great clubs in world sport were formed – Liverpool in 1892; Manchester United 1878; Barcelona 1899; Real Madrid 1902; Juventus 1897; New York Yankees 1903; Boston Red Sox 1902. And then there’s Port Adelaide…1870. It has been a remarkable journey of success since our club was formed from humble beginnings as a club for the young men of the Port Adelaide district. It’s a rich and proud history. And next year we will take everyone on that journey with us. In October we launched a 150th anniversary logo, bringing both the Magpies and Power together under one logo to celebrate our Proud Past and Bold Future. We have released a dedicated, immersive website - since1870. com.au - showcasing our story and will produce an iconic collector’s item book celebrating 150 years of the Port Adelaide Football Club. We will also release two club documentaries in 2020 – one kickstarting the season to be screened on Ch 7 and the other a feature length documentary film to be released toward the end of next year. Of course, we have a series of blockbuster home games including Good Friday night, Anzac Day night and our “150th Birthday game” in May to celebrate our formation. And we will elevate our Prison Bars on the national stage when we play the Crows in our home Showdown in Round 2, acknowledging the deeds of our past heroes and legends. The Prison Bars are an icon of our football club. And we intend to protect that guernsey’s legacy and celebrate its importance in our 150th year.

Congratulations to all three of these fine young men who once again form our leadership group. All three are of the highest quality and possess great character and leadership qualities. We know Tom, Ollie and Hamish will lead our young group with great distinction in 2020. In closing I thank everyone at the club for their efforts this year. To Keith Thomas and his executive team, all our off-field staff, players and coaches, thanks for your sustained commitment. In particular a big thanks to all the volunteers who commit so much to our club out of loyalty and passion. You don’t have to help, but you do, and we are extremely grateful. The Port Adelaide board is part of that volunteer group and I personally thank my fellow directors for their support and guidance. I wish departing players and staff all the very best for the future. Remember, you are all always welcome here at Port Adelaide. To the entire Port Adelaide family – players, coaches, staff, volunteers, corporate partners, members and supporters – we are on a clear path to where we are heading. We are building towards sustained success and our next premiership. We will celebrate our 150th anniversary by honouring our past while having a clear view as to what the Port Adelaide Football Club looks like in the future. This club is different; this club is special. It is something to be a part of. We are Port Adelaide. Proud Past. Bold Future.

Finally, we will return to our traditional one captain model in 2020 and beyond. Tom Jonas will proudly wear the revered number 1 guernsey as captain, with Ollie Wines as vice-captain and Hamish Hartlett as deputy vice-captain. 6 PORT ADELAIDE FOOTBALL CLUB YEARBOOK 2019

KEITH THOMAS C EO R E P O RT We sit on the cusp of one of the most exciting and important years of our club’s history. Many hours have already been spent by the largely invisible, yet incredibly devoted, team of administrators and volunteers in preparation for our 150-year celebrations. Books, events, documentaries, photos, memorabilia, websites…you name it, we’re doing it in 2020! And rightly so…no other club in Australia can boast a story like ours. And whilst we will all enjoy the opportunity to reflect next year, I believe the most significant aspect of our celebrations will be the impact they have on reaffirming our club’s stance as we commence our journey into the next 150 years. Less than a decade ago, and just six years after climbing to the top of the AFL mountain, the Port Adelaide Football Club was on its knees. With the club losing heavily both on and off field, the question was being asked, is this club viable? Could a club rise from its local suburban origins, and be expected to compete economically and for premiership points on the national stage? When most on the sidelines were shaking their heads, Port Adelaide did what it has always done…it fought back. The club changed its CEO, coach, chairman and captain. We invested in world-class high performance… and got fitter, on and off field.

We declared to the football world that ‘We will never ever give up’…and didn’t. We put 40,000 t-shirts on the new seats of Adelaide Oval and put our members back at the heart of everything we do. Then we sang a song, that would soon become an anthem… as one united family under the scarves of Port Adelaide. The move to Adelaide Oval was hard fought and critical to the club’s survival. Just as the war to enter the AFL through the nineties took a very heavy toll on the club’s administration, so did the battle to get to Adelaide Oval. It was a brutal exercise, but it was worth it, and has laid the platform for the long-term survival of the club. Yet, true to its commitment to never stand still, the club soon realised that survival alone in the AFL was not the goal. The goal is, and always has been, to win premierships. To achieve that, the club must be able to compete financially with the powerhouses of the competition. Within a year of arriving at Adelaide Oval, we realised that we needed an even bolder vision for the future. Enter China, Australia’s largest trading partner, fast becoming the largest economy in the world. Could we take Port Adelaide, and our Indigenous game, into a foreign market and succeed?

Could we create an alternative revenue stream that was not dependent on our win-loss ratio? In 2019, we played and won our third game in Shanghai. Since 2017, over 15,000 Port Adelaide fans have travelled across the world to watch their team play in one of the largest and most sophisticated cities in the world. In November, we employed our first-ever full-time employee based in China. Despite all of the costs and complexities associated with organising and running the game in Shanghai, this year China delivered over $300,000 to our bottom line. We expect that to be $3m per annum within five years. We have had our Prime Minister, and one of China’s most prominent leaders Premier Li Keqiang, publicly applaud Port Adelaide on the world stage. Heady stuff… and, as members of the Port Adelaide family, we should all be immensely proud of this achievement. Which brings me back to 2020, and how it will shape us into the future. ‘We Are Port Adelaide’… has become the club’s touchstone. It’s a commitment to who we are and what we stand for. 2020 is all about that. Being Port Adelaide is enough. More than enough. Our priorities for the next five years are clear. We have set ourselves to win at least another AFL premiership by 2024, and expect to do so.

Our club culture will reflect a commitment to excellence, and a deep care for those who serve it. Our supporters and members will be central to every experience we provide. We will attract corporate partners, in Australia and China, who are with us for the long haul. Our commitment to partnerships such as these will be all consuming. We’re going to upgrade our facilities, and welcome women’s footy to Alberton Oval in a big way. And we are going to continue our life-changing community programs…and through them develop lifelong associations between the participants and the club, thus growing the family further. All of these things are available to us now. The blood, sweat and tears of generations of true Port Adelaide people have brought us to a position where we can now look forward and see more than merely a fight for survival. We can now see a bold, at times audacious future… full of Port Adelaide grit and ambition and success. Just as it has always been. It is been one of the great privileges of my life to serve, and to have been embraced by, the incredible people of Port Adelaide. My family and I will always be indebted to you. Let’s enjoy our 150 th! Thank you. KT

COMMUNITY REPORT Over the course of 2019, Power Community Limited continued to build on their reputation for delivering the best in-class community programs across the AFL industry. The dedicated team of 12 staff continue to push the boundaries of what is possible through community engagement. This year, the introduction of science, technology, engineering and mathematics across all programs has begun inspiring students to consider the next generation of employment opportunities within the Port Adelaide heartland in South Australia. Students have had the opportunity to be inspired by high performance staff and players at Port Adelaide, engineers from Naval Group building the next generation of submarines in Port Adelaide - and a range of technologists in our region supporting our community. We have bold plans for the future, with innovative thinking helping to inspire the next generation in Australia. The Community Youth Program continued to build on its success in its 20th year, covering 12,862 kms and engaging over 25,000 students from 90 schools. Spearheaded by Russell Ebert and Port Adelaide players, the program provides a unique engagement opportunity for the community and plays an important role in the development of our players. A highlight this year was Xavier Duursma pulling out the famous bow and arrow celebration at the school visits. We have continued our focus towards supporting the

Defence industry, with the club signing a Memorandum of Understanding with the Australian Defence Force on the iconic ship HMAS Adelaide. The MOU supports each other’s initiatives with a focus on leadership opportunities and supporting defence families though our existing program the Power to be Positive. The Power to be Positive program was delivered to 800 students from 17 schools and their families in South Australia and Malaysia. The Power to End Violence Against Women program engaged over 1,525 students across 22 schools, with a focus on respectful relationships in our community. To date, this program has involved 6,210 students from 83 schools, using the players as a vehicle to share important social education messages with the community. Alipate Carlile successfully delivered another year of the Power Intercultural Program, with 295 students across 11 schools involved. The University of South Australia undertook a research project on the program, which identified it has successfully contributed to a greater social cohesion in our community. The program was celebrated on the national stage, with our ‘Everyone is Welcome’ round, which was held during the Power’s clash with the Western Bulldogs in round 15.

8 PORT ADELAIDE FOOTBALL CLUB YEARBOOK 2019

The Empowering Youth program - which is designed for Flexible Learning Options (FLO) school students - has been delivered to 124 students from nine school across metropolitan Adelaide. The program has been recognised for its innovative engagement methods to ensure students remain engaged at school. Our Aboriginal Programs started the year with an opportunity to showcase the club on the national stage by hosting the AFL Indigenous All Stars. Indigenous players from across the country gathered in Adelaide to demonstrate the strengths of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture and build on the collective work of the players on and off the field. The Aboriginal AFL Academy - both female and male - had another successful year with 43 students graduating from the program. There was a large number of talented participants in this year’s program, which we are hoping will translate into plenty of representatives at AFL and AFLW level in the near future. As part of the program, students from the academies were given the opportunity to travel to Melbourne and Garma in the Northern Territory to experience the culture and understand the demands of travel as an elite athlete. Remote communities hold so many young talented people, and we are lucky we have the opportunity to visit them once a term. Spearheaded by ex-AFL

player Wade Thompson, we deliver a positive decisionmaking program which is linked to school attendance. Remarkably school attendance has increased significantly since we have been running the program, which demonstrates the impact this program is having on Closing the Gap initiatives. The club’s marquee Aboriginal engagement program is the SANTOS Aboriginal Power Cup. This program is directly linked to Closing the Gap of school completion in South Australia which has seen an increase of 96%. The reward for completing the program is participating in a football carnival and having the opportunity to play on Adelaide Oval. In 2019, the program had 500 participants involved across 75 schools. Powerful Futures has placed 32 young people into employment and further education over the course of 2019. This program provides a vital link between school completion and education and further employment. Cultural Awareness has educated 2,300 community members on the rich living culture of Aboriginal peoples and the beautiful strength of the oldest surviving culture in the world. We thank the Power Community Limited board, staff, players and partners for their ongoing dedication to the club and the community.

Port Adelaide attracted a broadcast audience in China that exceeded its Australian television audience...

CHINA ENGAGEMENT

In 2019, Port Adelaide’s engagement in China matured on several levels. We returned significant revenue to the club, and developed a sharper understanding of our value proposition in the market. The annual AFL match in Shanghai is now part of the broader Festival of Australia program and Port Adelaide (with the AFL) once again delivered an international event of an exceptional standard. Port Adelaide’s China Engagement team is reaching for three goals. We want to deliver $3 million in new revenue to PAFC, without the attrition of traditional assets. We want to develop generational partnerships through our engagement in China. And we want to make PAFC a global brand. We believe such an ambitious agenda is consistent with the Club’s historic purpose and vision.

$3 MILLION To deliver new revenue without the attrition of traditional sporting assets, Port Adelaide is focussed on developing partnerships with Chinese companies commercially active in Australia. We are also undertaking business development in education and sport, both growing sectors of the Chinese economy. In 2019, we returned significant new revenue to the club’s bottom line, and developed a more clearly defined value proposition in the market. GENERATIONAL PARTNERSHIPS Port Adelaide continues to build generational partnerships through

our engagement with the People’s Republic of China. This financial year was the first year of our five-year extension with Shanghai CRED; it was the first year of our five-year agreement with Jincheng Group; it was the second year of our three-year initial agreement with The University of Adelaide, and it was the first year of our long-term relationship with PwC. As with all of our partners, their success is our objective.

Australia in China. The Gala Dinner and AFL match was the culmination of this two-week program, which spanned 10 cities and over 40 events in China. For Port Adelaide to play such a significant role in such a program elevates our club on a global stage.

GLOBAL BRAND

Throughout the year, Port Adelaide attracted a broadcast audience in China that exceeded its Australian television audience – a significant early step on our journey to becoming a global brand.

For the first time, the annual AFL match in China was part of the Festival of Australia – the platform through which the Federal Government will promote

Significant South Australian institutions have become partners on this journey. Penfolds supported the game in Shanghai for the first time in 2019, as did

Stehr Tuna and Pirate Life. The South Australian Government continued its significant support. Blooms the Chemist were also involved for the first time, in what we anticipate will become another generational partnership. The progress achieved in 2019 would not have been possible without the excellence, dedication and resilience of those working on this project. Nor would it have been possible without the support and faith of the magnificent Port Adelaide members and fans. The China Engagement team also thanks PAFC’s CEO, Board and Chairman for their ongoing support.

KEN HINKLEY A F L S E N I O R COAC H

There was a sense of optimism but uncertainty surrounding 2019 and the Port Adelaide Football Club.

We were brave with some decision making in terms of our list and game-plan and we saw signs of being rewarded. We had a major coaching reshuffle with some departures giving us the opportunity to bring in some new faces and ideas, and freshen up our football program. Port Adelaide premiership players Jarrad Schofield, Brett Montgomery and Dean Brogan returned to join the coaching team. We saw Michael Voss become my senior assistant and Nathan Bassett take over as forward line coach in a complete reshuffle of our coaching group. We also strengthened our list for now and for the future, with the arrival of experienced South Australians Scott Lycett, Ryan Burton and Sam Mayes and a host of young talented players including three in the first round of the draft – Connor Rozee, Zak Butters and Xavier Duursma. We couldn’t be more pleased to have seen those three boys play a total of 61 AFL games in 2019.

We will never give up until we get where we deserVE TO BE.

It’s the kind of experience that you can’t put a value on and will stand them in good stead for the rest of their careers. We had Rozee boot five goals in a game and be rewarded at the end of the season with the runner-up in the NAB Rising Star Award, and who could forget Duursma’s bow and arrow goal celebration! We also saw some other quality young players stand up in 2019. With the likes of Willem Drew – coming off a year-long injury interruption, Pete Ladhams and Joel Garner making their AFL debuts and Darcy Byrne-Jones and Dan Houston becoming consistent performers at AFL level. There is a lot to be excited about. And we are thrilled with the efforts of our recruiting team, led by Geoff Parker and Jason Cripps, who secured talented youngsters Miles Bergman, Mitch Georgiades, Dylan Williams and Jackson Mead at the AFL Draft, along with rookies Trent Burgoyne and Jake Pasini at the rookie draft.

16 PORT ADELAIDE FOOTBALL CLUB YEARBOOK 2019

It is so fitting that in the club’s 150th year the Mead and Burgoyne names will return to Port Adelaide, and we hope Jackson and Trent will go on to be just as successful as their fathers Darren and Peter before them. We went into the 2019 season not completely sure what our list would be capable of, given the number of new faces and the overall inexperience of many of them. The season probably played out how we thought it might with some ups and some downs. We were ultimately extremely disappointed with how we finished and it burns for everyone associated with the club that we weren’t in contention in the major round. But we aren’t here just to play finals. We are here to win premierships. Our challenge is to set this side up to win premierships.

We’ve got a lot of optimism about our footy club. We need to continue to grow and get better and we will be unrelenting in our efforts to get Port Adelaide back to where it deserves to be. We will never give up until we get where we deserve to be. You can continue to be proud and continue to support this club in 2020, knowing every effort is being made to ensure we win this club’s next premiership.

PORT ADELAIDE FOOTBALL CLUB YEARBOOK 2019 25

MATTHEW LOKAN SA N F L COAC H

We play to win premierships both in the AFL and SANFL. That we just missed out in the SANFL in 2019 was disappointing, but it doesn’t mean that we shouldn’t be proud of our efforts. After a 2018 season where we struggled for consistency, that was a key goal for us going into the year. We wanted consistent effort in games and consistent performances from week to week. Despite a big turnover of players and a change to the set-up where we gave up our reserves program, our young and developing group showed huge growth to get all the way to the grand final, only to fall short to Glenelg on the day. Going into the season we welcomed a new captain in Cam Sutcliffe, who had played more than 100 AFL games at Fremantle, along with a number of other new faces on our SANFL contracted list. Among them were Matt Appleton from North Adelaide, Jack Elsworthy and Lachlan Smith from the Eagles and Dallas Hill who formerly played for Central District. Former Port Adelaide players Tom Corcoran and Adam Mahney also returned. We had a core group of AFL-listed players with SANFL experience but we also saw the arrival of youngsters like Boyd Woodcock, Tobin Cox, Martin Frederick, Kai Pudney and Riley Grundy who were

drafted to the club at the end of 2018. We were also fortunate to welcome Sam Mayes to the club from Brisbane. Sam’s AFL experience added to Cam’s leadership and the support of other senior players including Jack Trengove. We were really fortunate to have Ollie Wines, Tom Rockliff, Justin Westhoff, Brad Ebert, Charlie Dixon and Paddy Ryder playing in the SANFL at various times as well. It was great to see those guys come back and provide guidance for our younger players, but I was most proud that we didn’t leave it to the AFL guys coming back to get the job done – it was the guys who had been with us all year who kept contributing. We were a bit up and down at the start of the season but towards the back end we really came into our own, winning 11 of the 12 games heading into the grand final and playing some really strong football along the way. Glenelg proved to be our nemesis during the year, winning both encounters. We got one back in the second semi-final to earn our spot in the decider but on the day they ran out 28-point winners. It was pretty special to see the whole club invested in the SANFL finals because it showed how much winning means to Port Adelaide.

26 PORT ADELAIDE FOOTBALL CLUB YEARBOOK 2019

coming so close has made us hungrier to go one better in 2020.

While we didn’t win, we got some big-game experience into a lot of young guys. It’s great for their development to play at Adelaide Oval in front of a big crowd in high-pressure games. From winning four and a half games last season to then seeing the growth of some of our younger guys was great. If we continue to see that growth then I think we are doing our job with development. Coming so close has made us hungrier to go one better in 2020. We have been starved of a premiership for too long and, in our club’s 150th anniversary, nothing would mean more than to win another flag in the black and white.

TRAVIS BOAK won the 2019 John Cahill Medal at Port Adelaide’s 2019 Best and Fairest event, after a great year in which he returned to the midfield. The 31-year-old polled 179 votes to finish 11 clear of runner-up Darcy Byrne-Jones, who was a vote ahead of third-placed Dan Houston. Boak took the lead in the vote count after Port’s round 2 win over Carlton and was never headed - despite polling just six votes in his last three games - to claim his second John Cahill Medal. The Geelong Falcons product became just the fourth person to win the award on multiple occasions, following his joint win with Jackson Trengove in 2011. Boak polled in 20 of his 21 games including being Port’s best player on six occasions and showing remarkable consistency during the 2019 campaign. He was also the club’s highest polling player in the 2019 Brownlow Medal count. The former skipper thrived in a return to the midfield in 2019, remaining an on-field leader despite giving up the captaincy. Boak said the second time around, the award probably meant more to him. “There’s been a lot of people write me off the last two or

three years and say I shouldn’t even be in the side,” Boak said to the huge crowd at the Adelaide Convention Centre. “It’s not nice to hear those things; they certainly hurt a little bit for me. It’s about going out there and just trying to be the best person, the best player I can be and that’s all I can do. “This footy club is amazing and everyone who walks into it is a special person - this group is no different. “There’s some serious talent in this group and I can’t wait to spend the next four or five years with the club. “We’ve done some important things in the last couple of years in building connection, and hopefully this group can enjoy what Richmond did and have some success in the future.” Boak thanked the volunteers and staff at the club while he also credited coaches and teammates as well as club supporters and his family. It was a big night for Boak with the veteran taking home three awards in total. He collected the Fos Williams Medal for the best team man as voted by his teammates, and was also recognised with the John McCarthy Award for community service for his decade of work with the Childhood Cancer Association.

CONSISTENT midfielder Jack Trengove was awarded the 2019 A.R. McLean Medal as Port Adelaide’s best and fairest in the SANFL. Trengove finished nine votes clear of emerging Power players Willem Drew and Peter Ladhams, who tied as runners up. The 28-year-old started the season on fire, collecting 30 or more disposals in the first seven games, including 44 and 42 touches against West Adelaide and South Adelaide respectively. A leg infection meant Trengove only played 16 SANFL games in 2019, but the level of consistency when he was on the park proved a telling difference. The running machine polled votes in all but one of his games, including two best on ground performances, to claim his first A.R. McLean Medal in front of more about 900 people at the Adelaide Convention Centre.

because I know Bob McLean was a huge part of this club,” he said. “You don’t go into the season trying to strive for these types of awards. I knew my role going into the season and wanted to come in and play that and help some of the younger boys develop into consistent AFL players. “The last thing I want is for people to feel sorry for me. I’ve been lucky enough to live my dream of playing AFL footy and have ten seasons in the industry, and I consider myself extremely lucky to have done it for as long as I have.” Trengove thanked coach Ken Hinkley and General Manager Football Chris Davies for giving him an opportunity to continue his career at a second AFL club. He also thanked the playing group and the club’s passionate supporters for embracing him during his two years at Alberton.

He was also the club’s best vote getter at the Magarey Medal count last month, earning 15 votes to finish in equal-fifth position overall. Winning Port’s highest SANFL honour was a bitter sweet moment for Trengove, who was delisted by the club at the end of the season. “It’s a great honour to win this award. It’s a huge honour
