THE PURPOSE OF THE HIGH-RISE HOUSING PROJECT IN NAVY YARD, WHICH INCLUDES A MARKET AND SMALL WORKSHOPS, IS TO BRIDGE THE COMMUNITY WITH NEARBY AREAS WHILE PROVIDING HOUSING FOR LOW-INCOME INDIVIDUALS AND CREATING JOB OPPORTUNITIES FOR RESIDENTS. THE PROJECT USES A SELFSUFFICIENT APPROACH TO ENHANCE EDUCATION AND SAFETY WITHIN THE COMMUNITY.

FLOATING SCHOOL
LOCATED IN A LOW-LYING AREA OF NEW YORK, THIS PROJECT IS A MIDDLE SCHOOL BUILDING WITH A SPACIOUS GROUND FLOOR THAT INCORPORATES PLANTS FROM THE NEARBY PARK. THE GROUND FLOOR DESIGN ADDRESSES THE FLOODING CRISIS AND MINIMIZES DISRUPTION TO LOCAL RESIDENTS. THE SCHOOL IS BUILT TO HARMONIZE WITH THE ENVIRONMENT AND PROVIDE A BETTER NATURAL SETTING FOR STUDENTS.
AFTER STUDYING OLAFUR ELIASSON’S DESIGN PHILOSOPHY AND RECONSIDERING THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN ARCHITECTURE AND THE ENVIRONMENT, THE PROJECT WAS DESIGNED AS A RESIDENCE FOR THE ARTIST HIMSELF. THE BUILDING FACADE WAS PARTIALLY MODIFIED UNDER RESTRICTED CONDITIONS TO COMBINE ELIASSON’S INTEREST IN LIGHT AND THE NATURAL ENVIRONMENT. THE ADDITION WAS DESIGNED TO GROW WITHIN THE ORIGINAL BUILDING FROM THE GROUND TO THE ROOF, ALLOWING VISITORS TO PERCEIVE ELIASSON’S WORK NOT ONLY IN HIS ARTWORK BUT ALSO WITHIN THE SPACE.

BEIJING INTERIOR DESIGN 2016 COMMERCIAL DESIGN TEAM: ERIC YANG, KUN CHENG, BOWEN TANG, XIAO LIU
THIS COMMERCIAL DESIGN PROJECT INVOLVED RENOVATING XIDAN MALL TO ATTRACT A NEW, YOUNGER CLIENTELE AND ENERGIZE THE SPACE. THE RENOVATION AIMED TO ESTABLISH NEW RULES AND REPLACE THE PREVIOUS ORDER, USHERING IN A NEW ERA FOR THE MALL. THIS METAPHORICAL "NEW EPOCH" ENCOURAGES PEOPLE TO GATHER, EXCHANGE NOT ONLY GOODS BUT ALSO INFORMATION AND INSPIRATION. I WAS INVOLVED IN THE ENTIRE PROJECT FROM THE CONCEPTUAL PHASE TO COMMUNICATING WITH THE CONSTRUCTION SITE.
MARKETS HAVE TRADITIONALLY BEEN ASSOCIATED WITH PROSPERITY AND COMMERCIAL ACTIVITIES, REGARDLESS OF WHETHER THEY ARE IN A SMALL VILLAGE OR A METROPOLITAN AREA. HOWEVER, IN MODERN TIMES, MARKETS ALSO SERVE AS A HUB FOR EXCHANGING INFORMATION, RECREATION, AND INSPIRATION. THESE NEW CHARACTERISTICS ARE REFERRED TO AS THE "MODERNIZED FACTORS" OF MARKETS. IN THE PAST, MARKETS WERE THE BIRTHPLACE OF TRADING AND COMMERCIAL ACTIVITIES, DRIVING ECONOMIC GROWTH. IN THIS "NEW EPOCH," WHERE THE YOUNGER GENERATION IS THE MAJOR CONSTITUENT, THE MODERNIZED FACTORS OF MARKETS HAVE BECOME MORE ATTRACTIVE THAN EVER. THE RENOVATED MARKET WAS INSPIRED BY THE "NEW EPOCH WIKI," A USER-EDITABLE KNOWLEDGE REPOSITORY FOR TOPICS RELATED TO THE "NEW EPOCH" GENRE, SUCH AS ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE, HIGH-TECH DESIGN, AND LGBTQA ACTIVITIES.

IN NINGBO, FOLLOWING SOLAR TERMS TO USE FRESH INGREDIENTS IS A CUSTOMARY PRACTICE THAT REFLECTS THE IMPORTANCE OF MAINTAINING A HEALTHY DIET IN THE LOCAL CULTURE. TO INCORPORATE THIS CULTURAL FEATURE INTO THE DESIGN, A GREEN PLANT CYCLE ECOSYSTEM WAS CREATED IN THE COMMERCIAL SPACE, WHERE CUSTOMERS CAN EXPERIENCE THE LOCAL CULTURE OF HEALTHY EATING BY BEING SURROUNDED BY FRESH VEGETABLES. I PARTICIPATED IN BOTH THE CONCEPTUAL AND CONSTRUCTION PHASES OF THIS PROJECT, INCLUDING DRAWING AND REVISION.
