Article on the first London Exhibition of Paintings by Nicolas Gage in the October issue of

Many artists become anxious when considering what to paint? Why one subject over another? And these are reasonable questions, but not I suspect ones that have ever caused Nicky Gage any sleepless nights. For like Churchill, who was inspired by Chartwell and the surrounding countryside, Gage appears to paint what he loves. As to what this is exactly, a visit to his studio is informative. Its pale, bare stone brings to mind the chalk and flint of East Sussex; whilst the cool temperature evokes winter walks on the Downs. Not surprising then that the mainstay of his output are landscapes. And within these we often find his home, Firle Place, a pale form surrounded by a tapestry of brilliant greens reminiscent of the palettes used by English landscape painters of the 1920s and 1930s Still lifes are also present, with decorative objects such as two silver knights jousting – pepper and salt cellars in real life – or sometimes compositions of fruit, wine and lobsters, all of which seem a part of the artist and his life, capturing a certain joie de vivre. This spirit is evident in his style, too. Gage has an enviably relaxed approach to his art, happily mucking up and reworking the paint, betraying no anxiety whatsoever. Indeed, the closer he feels to the subject matter the more determined and involved he becomes, and the more successful the work appears. On surveying the pictures that will appear in this exhibition, my message to him is simply this: please carry on painting. Keith Coventry. October 2016.
