Alexander James. ‘Transparency of a dream illuminated - Plate XV’

A PhotoGram, a 5x4 inch polaroid with rare and out of manufacture film stock from the late 80’s. Without the use of a camera, they are made by laying materials directly onto the films plates and exposing with nothing more than moonlight, the setting sun or using a makeshift plein air beach studio. These polaroids were used by the artist as location proofs to enable a complex series of direct to film PhotoGrams using the same camera-less technique, but this time exposing 8x10 inch transparency film plates using only the differing environments and materials found along the journey. Free-diving daily to collect foreign materials and rubbish from the coral reefs, using them with island organics these PhotoGram works are a polarity in themselves, mixing what should be there with what should not.

Goals and traction Definition of success: In the short term, successfully completing the first installation facility in Maldives region in July 2018. Long-term success would then be rolling the facility concept out globally to all island nations suffering a plague of plastic in order to address the problem locally where it is needed most. For those installations to become locally engaged, through an artist residency program using the locations facilities to create works exploring the subject. • Secured a partnership with Eckersley O’Callaghan – an award winning design firm in London. Eckersley O’Callaghan’s team have worked with the artist to produce the design of the Anti-Gravity Aquarium to be fabricated on site in the Maldives. • Secured a partnership with Cricursa – a leading glass manufacturer from Barcelona. The glass produced by Cricursa will be used as a central component of the installation, housing over four tonnes of water. • Secured a collaboration with Soneva Resorts, a luxury five star hotel group in Maldives. Soneva will provide a base for the installation of the first facility in Maldives adjacent to one of their own islands. They will also incentivise an intelligent use of it amongst their team and the local community as part of their ongoing recycling and community outreach program. • Secured a book partnership with Pureprint Group – an award-winning printer working in conjunction with the WWF Gold Standards carbon neutral program to offset the carbon footprint for the production of the book. • Working with a London-based lab Happenstance Workshop to produce facility machinery.
 • Working with Metro Imaging darkroom services to produce the works.
