To address these issues, IBI sat down with Cameron Linder, CEO of Western Bowling Proprietors Insurance (WBPI). With nearly four decades of insuring bowling centers, we asked Cameron about the market changes and how proprietors can adapt.
Q: Why is the bowling center insurance market so unstable? Is bowling that risky?
A: Absolutely. For insurers, bowling means large, older buildings, sporting injury risks, and alcohol—a combination that raises red flags. Older buildings have higher fire, wind, and hail risks. Sporting injuries lead to frequent liability claims. And alcohol increases risks like drunk driving or shootings. Over the last five years, I have seen six companies exit bowling due to claims in one or more of these areas.
Q: Why can’t insurance companies handle these challenges?
