Get the Ultimate Control Over your Business with Conqueror Web and Kiosk
What are you waiting for?
The main thing that I would say is for new centers that are wanting to get Conqueror Web or Kiosk—don’t hold back. The more things that you make available to your guests, the higher your tickets are going to be. You’re doing yourself a disservice by limiting what’s available online. It’s a no-brainer. Your revenue is going to increase. Your ability to help your guests is going to be better. Your service overall is going to be better.

This month we feature Eddie Williams from Lilac Lanes & Casino.
Favorite part of being in the industry: My favorite part of being in the industry is creating a great experience for bowlers. We strive to provide the best customer service throughout our business.
Currently, the most challenging part of operating your business: Managing the customer climate in today’s fast-paced world. Expectations are extremely high. With the cost of living increasing, managing expectations is the biggest challenge overall.
One tip you would give to less experienced operators: Be aware of the financial landscape around your center, particularly who is within an 8- to 10-mile radius. Most bowlers prefer to be within 15-20 minutes from home when choosing recreational activities
How do you motivate staff to perform at a high level? We emphasize customer service every day, and I empower our team to make decisions. Afterward, we discuss their choices, which helps me understand their thought process. Sometimes, they make the right call, and I end up learning something new from them as well
Opinion on the future of league and tournament play: I think league bowling is having a little bit of an upswing right now, but unfortunately, it has been through non-sanctioned leagues. Tournament bowlers tend to stay closer to home now because of the cost of traveling and competing. Especially on the West Coast, with bowling
centers in smaller communities, bowlers can't afford to travel to the bigger cities to compete.
Do you host any special events like tournaments, fundraisers, or parking lot parties that are unique to your center? We have been fortunate to host the Special Olympics for the eastern region annually for a number of years. Just recently, we have had the privilege of hosting the PWBA twice, and that's been absolutely one of the best things for the area to bring the best female bowlers in the world to our area. We have done a number of fundraisers, and End Domestic Violence is one of the most successful events we host.
What are your tips on maintenance or security?
Those are some of the biggest challenges. Maintenance is hard because mechanics are hard to find. We have a couple, and we are hoping to find a couple more in the future unless we go to string machines. Regarding security, we have a cardroom where security is a requirement, so we are lucky when it comes to that part [of the business].
What do you see as the next big trend(s) in bowling? Well, of course, it is the string pins. As a business, we understand that this is something that is coming, and I would imagine that as time goes on, people will adapt just like we all did with synthetic lanes and resin balls. I completely understand the pushback from a professional aspect, but as a business, if you want to be here in five to ten years, we don't have many options.•
WAIVERS, LAWSUITS, & PRACTICALITY Cutting Risks Without Adding Friction
As the cost of everything goes up, including insurance and litigation, proprietors start asking, "What about waivers?" Listen, I will NEVER discourage you from implementing waivers into your business, as it will always help us cut injury claims. However, waivers aren't foolproof; they don't apply to all situations, and there are plenty of "it depends" areas when a waiver is involved. That said, will waivers reduce your risk? Absolutely. While they are not a 100% solution, they are still a significant risk reduction tool.
So,
what are some considerations when it comes to waivers?
A waiver's effectiveness is dependent on the state. You might think blue states are bad and red states are good on this issue, but it is not that cut and dry. California, for instance, is great on waivers! South Carolina, not so much! If you want to know how your state treats waivers, you can certainly reach out to me directly and ask, though an attorney in your state will give a much better answer.
Waivers are often not enforceable for children. Even some states that are great on waivers will not enforce waivers for children. And even then, there's an argument over who counts as a child. Often, anyone under the age of 12 is considered a child, but ages 12-18 can be a grey area in some states. Thankfully, children are not a considerable source of claims for bowling.
Waivers signed by someone who is not a legal guardian are worthless—enough said.
By Cameron Linder
Waivers will not protect you against drunk driving or violent assault claims.
Waiver use will complicate your ability to put bowlers on lanes. The most significant "cost" of implementing waivers is operational. Forget about the up-front cost of tablets; the friction introduced to the process can be substantial.
So, what to do?
Here is my attitude: anywhere it is "easy" to implement waivers, do it. Every person you get to sign a waiver reduces your risk. For example, online reservations are a low-friction place to collect waivers, and several reservation system providers have a waiver module you can pay for. Leagues are a low-friction, captive audience that you can get to sign waivers. Private parties and buy-outs are easy waiver targets.
But, waivers for open play bowlers at 7 p.m. on Friday? How many onestar reviews do you want to receive on Saturday morning?
If you implement waivers for reservations and league bowlers (especially electronically stored waivers), WBPI can discount the premium in recognition of your efforts to reduce the risk. Conversely, if you do not have a claim problem now, you might be tripping over dollars to pick up dimes. It’s a situation-dependent decision that every general manager and proprietor need to make individually.•

FUN AND REVENUE MAXIMIZING
Arcade Strategies for Any Space
By John Kolliniatis
For bowling operators who are looking to add an ancillary revenue stream while giving customers another fun experience and a reason to keep coming back and spending more, arcades are a great way to accomplish all of it.
Arcades have long been a winning addition for bowling centers, boosting revenue and enhancing the overall guest experience. By offering a variety of games and well-planned layouts, these spaces become a major draw for customers, giving them more reasons to return, spend more, and enjoy additional entertainment.
The size of the space available for games will affect the arcade layout and game selection. Whether your location works with a compact arcade space or has room to expand, strategically selecting the right games can make all the difference. From small-footprint games in cozy spaces to expansive setups with multiple driving games and virtual reality experiences, there are many ways to maximize fun and profitability.
A common question: What are the best ways to use existing space?
Small Arcades
For locations with small arcades already or limited space, we recommend sticking with two principles when determining what games to use in the space. The first is to select games with a smaller footprint, allowing you to place more games in your space. The second is to, as much as possible, try to
put the most popular and best-performing games into your space.
Examples are small footprint cranes, a mix of traditional cranes with multiple prizes guests can try to grab with a claw, and modern crane machine interpretations, such as a crane with a single giant prize that guests try to win by cutting the cord.
Another essential game is a driving game. We recommend two units for small spaces so friends and family can race each other. The units don't have to be cars, they can also be motorcycles which look visually smaller and give the impression of more arcade space.
To round out your arcade offerings consider small footprint coin pushers, basketball games, boxing games, a shooting game, and a few ticket redemption games.
Larger Arcades
For locations with a larger space, we recommend the same games as the small footprint arcades but with air hockey tables, up to eight driving games linked together, plus multiple types of driving games like a car and motorcycle version.
There is a larger footprint version of the cranes and sports games. An additional attraction popular for larger arcades is an attendant-free virtual reality game. These VRs recreate a roller coaster experience featuring some of the most popular pop culture and cartoon characters.
Arcade
Appealing To Many Demographics
One of the hallmarks of the best arcades is that they appeal to a wide range of demographics. This can be achieved by having a great mix of games suitable for different people. Have some smaller child-size games that parents and younger children can play together, but ensure you have the most entertaining adult-size games. Plus, an excellent game mix of redemption games, cranes, VR, driving, sports, arcade, and target games means you will have something for everyone.
Promotions, Events, and Incentives
Getting people in the door can sometimes be a challenge. Still, by offering promotions and events, a location can draw in new customers and get existing customers coming back more often.
An example of a promotion that has broad customer appeal is a Bonus Credit offer. For example, if you have $5, $10, $15, and $20 play card values, you can offer a $5 bonus on the $20 card, so the customer gets $25 worth of play credits for only $20. This type of promotion has two advantages: first, you are providing an offer with a high perceived value to the customer; second, you are encouraging customers to purchase the highest play card level. So, someone who might have usually only spent $10 can now shift up to the $20 card. The operator gets the additional $10 in revenue, and the customer feels they have gotten a great deal, which is a win-win!
game, such as pinball tournaments, air hockey, or basketball tournaments. Or you can host an arcade play tournament where people register in advance and pay a fee to participate with a playcard included in the fee. Then, guests will each play a game through an arcade course of 10-20 games, and the guest who racks up the most points wins a grand prize.
Remember to draw people in with the right specials at the correct times.
Birthday and lunch specials that include arcade gameplay are great for families and younger players who are more likely to visit during the day. In the evenings, special dinner and drink offers help to keep adults coming to your location and staying for a fun night.
One of the main challenges for operators is deciding which games to include in their arcade and how to fund them. By focusing on high-earning, popular, and must-have games, operators can create a space that is enjoyable for guests and financially successful. Partnerships offering revenue-sharing options can make it easier to add arcade attractions without the need for significant upfront investment, allowing operators to focus on providing a fun experience while generating additional revenue.•
Alternatively, events can help people get more out of their arcade. You can host tournaments based on a single type of

It’s a game changer!
I think it’s going to take us to the next level, and I think it’s going to really enhance the experience that we can provide. From the guest perspective, they’re going to see a new environment every time they come in. There are so many different things that you can do with it that I think it will just keep a lot of our younger guests much more enthralled in viewing with what’s going on. And I think it will make the experience just over the top because you won’t find it anywhere else.

BMaximizing Bar Revenue
with Concession Foods
Simple, Profitable Additions for Your Venue
oosting bar revenue isn't about the drinks you serve. A well-rounded strategy includes fun foods that are easy to prepare and high in profitability. While typical food and beverage profit margins hover around 20-30%, popular concession items like popcorn, nachos, and pretzels can generate margins as high as 80%! The appeal of these items is not just in their profitability but in how easily they integrate into any venue.
Popcorn
Potential profit margins: 70-80%
As a classic, popcorn is a must-have for any concession stand. Its enticing aroma draws customers in, and the prep is effortless. With minimal ingredients—kernels, oil, and salt—you can serve fresh batches without much hassle. Adding custom flavors, like bacon, cheese, or garlic parmesan, provides an exciting twist and enhances its appeal.
UPGRADE IDEA: Experiment with sweet and savory flavors. Flavored popcorn or unique seasonings can elevate the snack and keep guests returning for more.
PRACTICAL TIP: Consider equipment that streamlines the popping and serving process, offering convenience for staff and customers.

UPGRADE IDEA: Experiment with creative toppings to transform basic nachos into a signature offering. Specialty nachos increase your menu appeal and allow for higher pricing.
Hot Dogs
Potential profit margins: 60-75%
Hot dogs are still a classic concession food that never goes out of style. They are a versatile menu option that is easy to prepare and easy to customize with toppings like chili or nacho cheese and work well for quick snacks or themed menu items.
UPGRADE IDEA: Offer a range of toppings or specialty hot dogs, such as an Italian-inspired version with mozzarella and marinara.
Pretzels and Pizza
Potential profit margins: 60-70%
Giant soft pretzels and pizza are mainstays in the concession world, offering a satisfying snack or meal option for guests.
Both items are easy to keep fresh and are always in demand. A hot pretzel paired with a specialty dip or a pizza slice provides guests with an easy grab-and-go option.
UPGRADE IDEA: Offer dips like nacho cheese or honey mustard for pretzels or dress up pretzels with cinnamon and sugar for a sweet twist.
Cotton Candy
Potential profit margins: 65-90%
Cotton candy is more than just a treat for kids—its nostalgic charm appeals to customers of all ages. This easy-to-make item is an excellent addition to your bar's menu, offering a fun snack and the potential to elevate cocktails and desserts with its visual appeal.
UPGRADE IDEA: Use cotton candy as a garnish for cocktails or mocktails, creating an experience that will make your bar stand out.

Routine Maintenance
MADE SIMPLE
The Key to Long-Lasting
By Bryan Corbett
Arcade Success
Maintaining arcade game machines is crucial for ensuring they perform at their best, just like regularly servicing your car. Proper maintenance is not just a good practice but essential to long-term profitability. Well-maintained games perform better and enhance the overall guest experience, directly impacting customer satisfaction and return visits. Additionally, well-kept equipment is less likely to suffer from sudden malfunctions, reducing emergency repair costs and minimizing disruptions during peak hours.
One of the primary responsibilities of a technician is to schedule and perform preventative maintenance and cleaning tasks. These routine checks keep your games in top condition and help them generate the highest possible earnings.
Following a consistent maintenance schedule can keep your arcade games looking great and running smoothly, encouraging repeat visits and boosting foot traffic and revenue. Whether it is daily, weekly, or monthly upkeep, each maintenance task plays a vital role in enhancing the overall experience for your guests.
Regularly scheduled maintenance helps identify minor issues before they become major problems, allowing technicians to fix minor glitches, replace worn-out parts, and prevent major equipment failures that could disrupt business. Furthermore, it improves safety for staff and guests, as malfunctioning games can sometimes lead to accidents. By investing time in regular upkeep, operators ensure that their arcade runs smoothly, maximizing revenue potential and fostering a fun and safe environment for guests.
Important Tip: When cleaning out dust, use a compressor with a line dryer to remove moisture. Do not use canned air. Set the compressor to a low PSI so you do not damage electrical components. Bring a shop vac to vacuum the displaced dust so it does not settle back into the game.
Make sure that you conduct your preventative maintenance early in the week. If you test and clean games on Monday and Tuesday, you will have time to order any parts needed to get your games working as designed. Most locations make 70% of their income on the weekend, so it is extremely important to test your games and get them functioning before the weekend.
Bryan Corbett is the Technical Training and Support Manager, Betson Enterprise

• Check for burned-out score segments.
• Check all games for error messages.
• Calibrate driving games and test controls.
• Make sure games are linked.
• Test guns and calibrate.
• Test VR headsets for tracking and functionality.
• Check the water level on water games.
• Inspect strings on cranes and make sure they are not fraying.
Monthly Maintenance
• Air hockey: Clean playfield with denatured alcohol.

• Check for tokens under the pusher deck for coin pushers.
• Make sure pusher games have enough tokens to circulate properly.
• Water games: Check filters and make sure the UV light is working.
Pick 20% of your game room each month and perform these tasks:
• Check the ground plugs on the AC power cord.
• Check outlets for damage.
• Open the back of games, dust out computer fans, and vacuum the interior.
Bonus Tip:
Have Betson Essential Parts Package on hand. This package includes the most-used arcade parts, such as buttons, power supplies, mallets, and pucks. We also include consumables or refill items you need to operate your equipment, like collectible cards, photo films, tokens, and more.
Having a well-organized maintenance routine instills confidence in your operation. Guests notice when games are in excellent condition, and they are more likely to recommend your arcade to friends or plan future visits. Consistent maintenance paired with strategic game rotation and promotional events guarantee a dynamic and profitable arcade experience year-round.

A Modern Spin on Blending Innovation, Fun, and Local Pride ENTERTAINMENT
Located in Milwaukee's Deer District, The New Fashioned offers more than just bowling—it's an entertainment hub reimagined for modern fun. Originally opened as Punch Bowl Social and closed twice since the pandemic, it came under local ownership in 2024 and was rebranded to The New Fashioned, a play on words for the Old Fashioned drink so popular in this part of the country.
The 24,000-square-foot property is the newest and largest entertainment facility in the Bars and Recreation chain owned by Marla Pottinger and her husband, David. Under Pottinger's leadership, The New Fashioned offers a unique blend of innovative activities, family-friendly experiences, and Milwaukee pride.
The New Fashioned is an anchor in an already buzzing entertainment district. It is situated across the street from Fiserv Forum, home of the Milwaukee Bucks, and hosts numerous concerts and events. But it stands out with its wide array of creative entertainment offerings and cutting-edge selfservice options.
Innovation in Entertainment: HyperBowling, Street Curling, and Dart Ball
At the core of its appeal are the venue's inventive activities. HyperBowling, a thrilling blend of bowling and pinball, injects a different energy into the typical bowling experience. "We are not a traditional facility at all," said Steve Davis, general manager of Bars and Recreation. With many traditional centers already in the area, the entertainment group focuses on creating its own niche in the market.
"We wanted to build a venue where families could come together and have fun," Davis notes. "It's important to us that this isn't just a place for kids to run around, but somewhere adults can relax and enjoy themselves, too." HyperBowling provides options for everyone to choose which bowling experience they want, whether traditional or one of HyberBowling’s options. With bumpers available on all lanes, even the youngest bowlers can get in on the action.
Plus, with competitive social play being popular across many age groups the creative team is looking to offer HyperBowling leagues to engage the local community further. "We've had a lot of requests from customers for leagues and tournaments," Davis says. "It's definitely something we're looking to add in the near future, and we think it's going to be a big hit."
But HyperBowling is just the beginning. Street curling, played on the outdoor patio using synthetic ice, provides year-round enjoyment of a sport typically reserved for winter. This modern take on curling opens the game to all visitors, regardless of season.
For a truly local touch, guests can also try their hand at dartball, a sport that blends darts with baseball—a game deeply rooted in Milwaukee's culture. Players aim for a large board laid out like a baseball diamond, throwing darts to advance around the bases. Four bays upstairs are dedicated to this quirky yet beloved pastime. "Dartball really resonates with locals," says Davis. "It's always exciting to watch visitors try it for the first time and get hooked."
Streamlined Self-Service Systems: Bar Wall, Quick Dining, and Reservations
Running such a large venue requires streamlined operations, and The New Fashioned excels in this area with innovative self-service systems that enhance the guest experience and optimize efficiency.
One of the standout features is the massive self-serve bar wall, offering 50 taps of local beers, wines, cocktails, and sodas. Guests use wristbands to keep track of their drinks and can sample up to 64 ounces of any beverage they choose. This modern approach eliminates long bar lines, allowing guests to control their experience. "The self-pour system is a big hit," Davis says. "People love the flexibility it gives them to try a variety of drinks without waiting."
Beyond beverages, quick-service dining makes ordering food easy and fast. Guests can scan a QR code at their table or in the dining area, order via smartphone, and have their food delivered to them by food runners. This streamlined process means quicker service for large crowds, especially before or after events at nearby Fiserv Forum. For added convenience, guests book online reservations for activities, which ensures they can secure their spots ahead of time, making their visits smoother and more enjoyable.
Leaning into Milwaukee Culture: Local Partnerships and Community Focus
The New Fashioned proudly leans into Milwaukee's local culture, partnering with local producers for much of its food and beverage offerings. The bar wall features locally brewed beers, while the food menu highlights Wisconsin favorites like bratwursts, cheese curds, and the iconic Friday fish fry. This commitment to local partnerships extends beyond the kitchen—upstairs, a dedicated space allows local artisans to sell their wares, and the walls are decorated with murals celebrating Milwaukee's heritage.
"We wanted this venue to reflect the community we're a part of," Davis explains. "Milwaukee has a unique culture, and we're proud to showcase that through everything we do here."
An Event Destination in the Heart of Milwaukee
Strategically located just steps from Fiserv Forum, The New Fashioned capitalizes on the heavy foot traffic from major events like concerts, NBA games, and conventions. But even when nothing is happening across the plaza, the venue continues to draw crowds with its unique blend of activities.
Davis points out that the center has hosted various events, from buyouts for the Republican National Convention to special occasions featuring local celebrities. "We're always busy before and after arena events, but we also see strong crowds on weekends when there's nothing scheduled," Davis shares.
As the Deer District grows, so does The New Fashioned's role in the local entertainment scene. With new developments like a 4,000-seat, year-round entertainment facility and an expanded convention center nearby, the venue is poised to remain a key player in the district's future.
The success of The New Fashioned is just one part of the Bars and Recreation portfolio, a company known for its immersive, creative entertainment experiences. Beyond bowling, the company operates AXE MKE, a venue dedicated to axe throwing; Amped, a private-suite karaoke spot; and Nine Below, where guests can build their own mini-golf course.
Each venue offers a unique way for guests to have fun while embracing creativity and competition. "We wanted to create something different with Bars and Rec," says Davis. Each of our locations has its own personality, but they all share the same goal: to provide memorable, engaging experiences."
Looking Ahead: A New Era of Entertainment
With its innovative offerings, emphasis on local partnerships, and seamless guest experience, The New Fashioned is redefining what an entertainment center can be. Whether visitors come to bowl, try their hand at street curling, or sample the latest craft beers from the self-serve bar wall, they leave with a memorable experience that blends fun, technology, and community.
And with plans to introduce leagues and expand its competitive offerings, this entertainment hub shows no signs of slowing down. As the Deer District grows, The New Fashioned is set to remain a cornerstone of Milwaukee's entertainment landscape, delivering fun for locals and tourists alike.•

SIMPLE WAYS to Boost Sustainability
GREENER ENTERTAINMENT
Bowling centers and family entertainment centers have a unique opportunity to reduce their environmental impact by adopting sustainable practices. From energy-efficient lighting and water-saving fixtures to ecofriendly materials and waste reduction programs, centers can implement various strategies to promote sustainability.
Incorporating digital solutions, encouraging reusable items, and sourcing locally are just some ways to minimize waste and resource consumption. I recently spoke with János Handó at Ladybird Farm Leisure Center, a leader in and outspoken supporter of sustainable entertainment, and we explored how bowling centers can highlight their commitment to eco-friendly and sustainable operations while enhancing the overall experience for visitors who value sustainability.
János sets the stage by telling us that a paradigm change is required. "The key question is: What kind of future would you like for your grandchildren? We must give up some part of our comfort level," János says.
As a tangible example, he says, "It is very easy to pick a plastic bottled beverage from a cooler and then dispose of the plastic bottle when it is consumed. But due to its chemical nature, plastic materials can only be reprocessed two to four times, and then they become real waste." One of the simple and innovative changes they have implemented is the removal of any plastic bottled drinks. Instead, they offer pure fruit juice drinks on tap served in paper cups or a guest's reusable bottle, which they sell as branded merchandise.
One effective, low-cost, and no-brainer strategy János mentions is, "Switch to LED lighting, replacing traditional bulbs with energy-efficient LEDs that consume less power and have a much longer lifespan." Additionally, they have installed motion sensors in areas like bathrooms, party rooms, hallways, and
By Brandon Willey
storage spaces, ensuring that lights are only activated when necessary and reducing electricity usage.
Offering digital tickets and waivers and limiting the printing of receipts unless necessary are simple yet impactful ways to reduce paper consumption and reliance on printed materials. But this is just the tip of the sustainability iceberg according to János.
Collecting waste selectively should be a must-have feature of all location-based entertainment centers. Implementing recycling programs helps guests and staff properly separate materials such as landfill waste, paper, plastic, and aluminum to divert non-biodegradable waste from landfills.
Another valuable practice János mentions is bulk purchasing for as many items as possible from your suppliers. "By buying in larger quantities, not only can it save money, but centers can significantly reduce packaging waste, contributing to less environmental impact." He goes on to say, "It is also crucial to ensure that cleaning products used in the facility are environmentally safe. Switching to non-toxic cleaning products protects the environment and the health of guests and employees."
KEY AREAS FOR SUSTAINABLE PRACTICES:
• Energy Efficiency
Conservation
Solutions
Packaging
Competitive Strategies
ENGAGING GUESTS IN SUSTAINABILITY
Most importantly, János says engaging with guests on sustainability efforts is necessary to foster environmental awareness. János provides information about the center’s eco-friendly practices through active and passive guest engagement. They have installed dozens of posters throughout the facility with explanations of renewable energy, waste routes, the ecological footprint, and conscious shopping. More actively, they provide STEM sessions for different age groups on each topic covered on the posters and have regular craft programs where children can create useful articles from waste.
János believes center operators can enhance their sustainability efforts beyond the basics by incorporating several eco-friendly practices into their daily operations. One effective strategy is the installation of low-flow fixtures in restrooms, such as water-efficient faucets, toilets, and urinals. He says, "'These fixtures significantly reduce water consumption without sacrificing functionality, helping to conserve such a valuable resource."
Another way to improve efficiency is through building automation systems. János clarifies, "When we build [additions], we use the concept of total cost of ownership. It might cost more in capital expenses, but there will be a nice return on investment with lower operating costs. These smart energy management systems control lighting, heating, and cooling based on occupancy and time of day, ensuring that energy is only used when necessary." This lowers electricity usage and reduces the center's overall carbon footprint.
Additionally, to encourage guests with electric cars to visit and to promote clean energy transportation, János suggests bowling centers install electric vehicle (EV) charging stations and provide bike-friendly facilities, such as bike racks and incentives for guests or staff who cycle to the center.
In food service areas, János implores us to transition to reusable items like cups, plates, and utensils as a critical step toward sustainability. By moving away from singleuse plastics and other non-biodegradable items, operators can minimize waste and promote a more eco-conscious experience for guests. For example, János only provides straws for frozen drinks, and he says, "Using eco-friendly packaging made from biodegradable and recyclable materials for our food and beverages further reduces our environmental impact."
GO THE EXTRA MILE
While many of the preceding recommendations are easier and cost less to implement, the next few suggestions can take your commitment to sustainability to another level entirely. János says, "One of the most impactful approaches is to invest in renewable energy by installing solar panels or purchasing green energy from renewable sources. As of 2017, we secure all our electricity from renewable sources. Even our kitchen is fully electric and not reliant on natural gas."
Another way to enhance sustainability is through composting programs for food waste generated from food service and concessions. János says, "By diverting organic waste from landfills and turning it into compost, centers can reduce environmental impact and contribute to healthier soil ecosystems. In Spring 2025, we will install a composting machine to compost all food, green, and used coffee waste."
Bowling centers can use sustainable building materials like recycled materials when undertaking construction or renovation projects. János says, "Installing green roofs or walls can provide benefits like improved insulation, reduced stormwater runoff, and cleaner air." Green certifications like LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) or Green Globe can "further validate the center's commitment to sustainability and provide a framework for implementing best practices in energy efficiency, water conservation, and waste reduction."
As a responsible community partner, János believes supporting local economies and reducing transportation-related emissions are critical elements of sustainable operations. Even when it is not the cheapest, engage in local sourcing by purchasing food, beverages, and other materials from nearby suppliers, thereby reducing the carbon footprint. Finally, he recommends choosing sustainable suppliers that prioritize eco-friendly practices. Partnering with suppliers who offer organic, fair trade-certified, or environmentally responsible products can reinforce a center’s dedication to ethical and sustainable business practices.
By implementing just a few of these practices, operators can reduce their environmental impact while providing guests with an engaging and enjoyable experience. János summarizes, "By analyzing our supply chain and operations, we can always find improvements that cause less damage to Mother Earth. Yes, it will sometimes go against the bottom line, but sustainability does not have to endanger overall profitability."
Paraphrasing Einstein, János concludes, "It is foolish to expect a different result if we do the same thing all the time."•

UNLOCK YOUR TEAM'S POTENTIAL
Staffing with Creativity and Strategy
with Steve Cieslewicz
As I sat down to write this month's column, I could not help but think back to a painter I once hired to create a portrait of our bowling center. Eight months after commissioning it, I asked why it was taking so long, and she said, "Sometimes, it just doesn't flow." I had no clue what she meant at the time, but now, after writing many articles for IBI, I get it. Creativity does not always come on command, but it is easier when you figure out what inspires you.
For many of us, creating fun and memorable experiences for our guests keeps us going. That is what gets me out of bed every day. But let's face it—it is a lot of work, and it is nearly impossible without one essential element: the right team to make it happen!
Staffing is a challenge. Finding good people, keeping them engaged, and getting them to work well together is no small task. At our center, we have 32 employees, and like many of you, I have learned that hiring isn't about finding the right people. It is about helping them thrive in their roles, so they stay happy— and keep you happy, too. Easier said than done, right?
Years ago, if you needed new hires, it was pretty straightforward. You would go through your stack of applications, make a few calls, and set up interviews. But things have changed. So, how do we find good people today? Where do we look, and how do we spark their interest?
Let's look at a simple but sometimes overlooked tactic: always be on the lookout for potential new team members. My management team and I have made it a habit to scout for quality people wherever we go. About a year ago, my son and I were grabbing lunch at a fast-food spot when a young woman behind the counter stood out to me. She was upbeat, energetic, and genuinely friendly. When she brought our food to the table with a smile, I was sold! I turned to my son and said, "That's exactly who we need. She has the customer service skills, and we can teach her the rest." So, I handed her my business card and gave a quick 30-second pitch about joining our bowling center if she wanted to try something new. Two weeks later, she was on board as a part-time team member.
Always keep your eyes open—you never know when or where you will spot your next great hire. And if you do not have a quick, 30-second pitch ready about why working at your center is a great opportunity, now's the time to create one!
Once you have someone interested, I recommend finding out why they applied and what they are looking for. Understanding their motivation will help you attract future candidates, too. Ask yourself (and them):
• What made them apply to your business instead of someone else's?
• How did they hear about the job—was it through social media or word of mouth?
• Are they regular customers who already know your center or someone brand new?
Once you have gathered insights from your candidates, thinking beyond just filling positions is essential. Understanding what drives each person can help you make more strategic decisions about where they will thrive in your center.
A few years ago, I sent two assistant managers to a hiring seminar, and one key takeaway stuck with us: match employees' skills with the right roles. If someone loves social media, do not put them in the kitchen. That is a recipe for disaster! This nugget of wisdom changed how I approach hiring and training. Focusing on what employees are good at and interested in makes it easier to place them in roles where they can excel. It is our job as leaders to identify strengths and place people where they can excel.
Staffing might not be easy, but with a little effort and a fresh perspective, you can find those standout employees— and help them succeed. Stay open, stay creative, and always be on the lookout for your next team superstar.•
Good luck out there,
Steve Cieslewicz is the proprietor of Whitetail Lanes in Amherst Junction, WI, and a regular contributor to IBI magazine.

ON THE GROUND! Get Your Feet
Making the right flooring choices for your center
By Jose A. Segarra and Randell Thrasher
As more operators upgrade their facilities to meet guest expectations, flooring becomes a key factor to consider. This month, we are focusing on SUSTAINABILITY and how to make smart flooring choices for your center.
Sustainability means meeting today's needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet theirs. When designing your center, this might sound abstract, especially when choosing sustainable materials. But it does not have to be complicated.
A sustainable design minimizes your center's negative impact on the environment and the people inside while maximizing performance. Here's why sustainability should be a crucial part of your business strategy: It's not just about environmental responsibility but social responsibility and enhancing your reputation.
WHY FLOORING MATTERS FOR SUSTAINABILITY
Flooring can have a significant environmental impact. Luckily, manufacturers now offer a wide range of ecofriendly flooring options that combine durability with style. To help you make the right choice, here are some essential factors to consider:
MANUFACTURER'S COMMITMENT TO SUSTAINABILITY
It is easy for companies to claim their products are ecofriendly but look beyond the marketing. Investigate the manufacturer's overall environmental efforts. Companies serious about sustainability will share information on their sustainable manufacturing processes, energy and water conservation efforts, and partnerships with eco-conscious organizations. Look for third-party verifications to back up their claims.
RAW MATERIAL SELECTION
Genuinely sustainable products start with high-quality raw materials. Whether it is fast-growing organic resources or highquality recycled content, the materials used in manufacturing can make a big difference. Please pay attention to what goes into the product, as it impacts the overall environmental footprint.
PRODUCT COMPOSITION
While it is hard to find 100% bio-based products that fit every area of a bowling center, product composition is still essential. Compare the percentage of bio-based materials, recycled content, and safe, traceable components in your flooring options. Look for Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) that independently verify these factors.
MAINTENANCE REQUIREMENTS
Sustainable flooring should require minimal chemicals for upkeep. The best options may only need water for cleaning. Remember that while it is easy to focus on material choice, the maintenance routine will significantly impact the floor's durability and environmental footprint. Harsh cleaning methods and chemicals can quickly negate the eco-benefits of your flooring choice.
PRODUCT LIFE AND END-OF-LIFE OPTIONS
Both its performance and aesthetic trends can influence flooring longevity. Either way, it is crucial to understand how long the flooring will last in your environment. When it is time to replace it, consider whether the product is recyclable or has reclamation options to prevent it from ending up in a landfill. Closing the sustainability loop is critical.
Today's customers are more environmentally conscious than ever. They appreciate doing business with companies that prioritize sustainability. You can enhance your reputation as an environmentally responsible operator by making sustainable flooring choices and promoting your eco-friendly efforts.
Your center can positively impact both the planet and your bottom line by selecting flooring that aligns with your sustainability goals.•

With KBF’s user-friendly, automated system, you can easily collect important customer data, including family contact information, birthdays, and other key marketing details. Plus, KBF keeps in touch with families year-round on behalf of your center, driving continued engagement.
Operators benefit from increased revenue through secondary spending in the center and through sales of the popular KBF Family Pass.
Since its launch in 2008, KBF has registered over 40 million children across more than 1,500 centers in the U.S., Canada, and military bases worldwide. Visit us at booth #1643 or call 877-841-4590 to learn more.

On the first throw the player will have to knock down the first 3 pins, on the second throw 6 pins and the third throw all 10 pins. In Red pin Challenge- the player must avoid hitting the red pin. In time your shot you need to aim for the blue pin that is moving. Throughout all the minigames there is a chance for multipliers and extra ball opportunities.

Scan and Save with Intercard’s iQ Readers and Kiosks
At IAAPA 2024 Intercard will feature its iQ readers and kiosks that read the popular QR codes, setting the new standard for bowling center payment technology. iQ devices use built-in scanners to accept QR codes for payment and redemption point collection. This will enable customers to use mobile devices or paper instead of play cards to activate games, reducing costs for bowling operators and owners of unattended arcades.
“With the iQ series, customers can purchase or recharge game play and use a mobile device or paper receipt with QR code to play games, collect points and even redeem prizes,” says Scott Sherrod, CEO of Intercard, “all without the help of a center employee. It’s a big step into the future.”

Technology that’s super simple
I think the technology that Square uses is phenomenal… They really blow some of the older credit card machine technology out of the water. Their processing is incredibly fast compared to all the other credit card machines that we’ve used. It speeds up checkout. It speeds up when we split checks and have to run multiple cards. It’s super simple. It’s wireless. You just hand guests the terminal and they do everything on their own.
