REFLECTION AND GROWTH IN THE NEW YEAR

T

he start of a new year is often cliché for setting lofty, sometimes unrealistic goals. Year after year, goals are set about how we can improve, be better, look better, and become an improved version of who we are and what we do. I have a suggestion: instead of looking ahead to what you WANT to achieve, how about first looking BACK at what you have already achieved? You may be surprised and impressed with yourself by taking a trip down memory lane. It's easy to forget all the hard work we've already put into ourselves, our families, our businesses, and our community. Here's an insightful exercise I've often used to coach clients as a first step before establishing goals. It's a confidencebuilding way to assess the past, learn from mistakes, celebrate successes, and help you decide what direction you'd like to go.

REFLECT, WRITE, REPEAT In the last 12 months:

• What have you done to help other people or organizations? • What new initiatives, programs, or business tools have you created or implemented at your business? • How have you impacted your team members? • What have you done to grow your health and happiness? • What significant events or milestones were you a part of? • What do you want to accomplish personally and professionally, and why? Setting yourself up for success starts with a proper and realistic foundation. Beginning with yesterday will help you improve today, tomorrow, and the new year. This month, our cover story highlights four decades of success from a 16-lane center down under. The names of proprietors Marisa and Aldo Belmonte may ring a bell because their son 6 IBI January 2024

is the famous pro bowler Jason Belmonte. Through the years, the Belmontes adapted to softening league demand and changing guest behavior and expectations. Strategic leaguebuilding efforts and consistent coaching programs have kept the busy center running daily shifts. Another fascinating read comes to us from Mark Miller, who highlights a unique pro shop that is doing gangbuster business. This Texas pro shop is a collaborative effort of former pro Chris Warren, his brother Butch, and proprietor Jamie Brooks. Check out the story on page 10. You'll be impressed with the revenue and excitement surrounding this exceptional shop. I had the pleasure of interviewing Carey Tosello, founder of eBowl.biz, for our "Inside Line" column this month. Carey's digital marketing company is celebrating its 20th year in 2024 with a valuable new tool to help operators reach thousands of people every day. Carey's passion for the bowling business developed as he grew up in his family's bowling centers before moving on to compete collegiately. Carey and his eBowl.biz team pride themselves on offering effective and affordable ways to drive more traffic through the doors of centers nationwide. The IBI team loves hearing from our readers! Let us know if your center has exciting news to share with the industry.

RIGHT FLOORING CHOICES for Your Center

As more operators reinvest in their facilities to meet guest expectations, we look to flooring and what to consider when updating your center. This month, we focus on DESIGN.

P

roper planning and research should ease concerns when deciding the ideal flooring material choice.

The goal of any interior design effort is the creation of functional, aesthetically pleasing, comfortable, and safe spaces that meet the needs and preferences of the center and provide its staff and patrons with a memorable experience that builds trust. Flooring, walls, and ceilings make up a canvas that allows the interior elements to be displayed and utilized in a cohesive space. As opposed to walls and ceilings, your staff and patrons will be in touch with your flooring surfaces most of the time they spend in your space. Colors, patterns, and textures communicate function and atmosphere. They also affect the way people feel and behave. Mixing and matching different types of flooring throughout the space adds variety while helping you manage how people navigate the space (wayfinding) and how they utilize different areas within your center. For instance, combining a soft texture like a carpet with smooth designs and neutral colors can create a relaxing vibe, while more invigorating colors, patterns, and textures create the mood for fun and games. The better the game, the longer the stay. Contrast is crucial, as it creates balance and softens sensory overload. With bright lights and intense sounds at the core of an arcade, a soft color pallet and simple designs on the floor can help create the proper balance to make the experience more enjoyable. Complicated designs can do a fantastic job in open areas, assisting people to circulate out of them and into the spaces where they want to go. Technological advances in manufacturing have maximized the versatility of flooring materials, making them look and feel like other materials to gain functionality and purpose. There is no longer the need to utilize materials that look good but represent a higher cost of acquisition and maintenance. A wide array of vinyl and textile products that resemble concrete, wood, metal, stone, and others are available at

8 IBI January 2024

a fraction of the cost, with increased functionality, while keeping you within the design trend. Common wisdom suggests that "the trend is your friend." Although trends are great reference points, designing your interior space is more about conveying what you stand for and why. Another consideration is that floors are not as easy to update with the trends as other design elements 7 Key Elements like walls, ceilings, furniture, DESIGN – THIS MONTH or fixtures. Therefore, • Functionality when thinking of flooring designs, think long-term. • Performance We recommend surfaces • Health with colors, patterns, and textures that stand the • Sustainability test of time while being • Maintenance sustainable, durable, and easy to clean. This will • ROI exponentially improve your return on investment.

FLOORING CONSIDERATIONS

Flooring should not be selected in isolation.

TIP: To ensure the floor interacts with the rest

of the space, request samples of different materials and place them in the intended location. You should also allow for a well-placed area that is representative of the desired conditions and addresses your concerns. Flooring manufacturers will suggest the most suitable products and supply materials for you to test. Jose A. Segarra and Randell Thrasher are National Segment Leaders at Forbo Flooring Systems.

A Pro Shop That’s

REALLY CRANKIN’! Unique Pro Shop Brings in Big Revenue

By Mark Miller

F

eaturing two bowling lanes as part of the store, former pro bowler Chris Warren scores big inside Plano Super Bowl in Plano, TX. Early in December of 2019, Chris Warren took a call at his Grants Pass, OR, pro shop from older brother Butch in North Texas. “He said ‘I need you to open up a shop here by January 1,’” said Chris, who had lived in the Pacific Northwest since 2000. Chris and wife Michelle originally planned to return to his native state when son Christopher graduated high school in 2022. And while Michelle was apprehensive, Chris knew they could make it work earlier. So, he heeded Butch’s request and revamped the pro shop at Plano Super Bowl.

A Labor of Love and Profits

“There was stuff laying all over the place. I just came in and started tearing things up,” he said. “The first thing we did was order two drill presses, ball spinners, everything. I didn’t receive a paycheck for the first year and a half. I just kept putting money back in.”

Chris Warren

His initial changes proved successful with $280,000 in sales in 2020 and $520,000 in 2021. But Butch and legendary proprietor Jamie Brooks – who first met Chris when he was 16 years old – knew it could do better. So, in May 2022 they asked Chris about his ultimate vision. 10 IBI January 2024

Feature “I wanted to take out the games and put some lanes in and do some things different,” Chris told Butch and Brooks, and they liked how he was thinking. Jamie supported him, replying, “You could have your own lanes. You wouldn’t have to borrow lanes from us. You’d have a lot of room. We could sell more bowling balls. We could do a lot more things.” Butch and Brooks said they wanted to make it happen and asked Chris to put together a business plan. “This is going to be a pretty big number,” warned Chris. Whatever that number was, Butch, Brooks and others made it happen. The result has turned into one of the most unique pro shops on the planet. Partnering with Pat Cinello at QubicaAMF, friends at Brunswick and Storm, plus Brooks and Butch, the remodeled Chris Warren Pro Shop opened in October 2022 with two string-pin bowling lanes. “They have helped me so much in making my dream. They created this. I didn’t create this,” Chris said. “Without the help of all these people, this would not have happened. You need help to see your dreams and visions happen.” The shop, which has three full-time employees, plus Chris and Michelle – earned $730,000 in 2022 and is on pace for $830,000 in 2023. Never could Chris imagine such numbers from his Texas action bowling days of the late 1970s and early 1980s. Chris joined the PBA in 1983 and first learned about drilling bowling balls on the PBA Tour truck with Bill Hall, Larry Lichstein, and others in 1986-1987. He enjoyed some early success on the PBA Tour, winning six titles by 1992 including the 1990 United States Bowling Congress Masters, before running into some personal demons. He left Texas in 2000 to start his life over in Washington. It was there he met Michelle at Narrows Plaza Bowl where he worked the front counter and she had just started bowling in a league. Away from the game for several years, few people knew of his previous success. Warren worked for Peter Somoff’s chain of pro shops in the Seattle-Tacoma area for two years before opening his own in Grants Pass in 2005 where he worked until moving back to Texas. In between, he broke his leg in 2013 which has limited his on-lanes capabilities even today. “There are some things I can’t do mobility wise,” he said, “but I can still bowl.” 12 IBI January 2024

Chris helps a customer get just the right fit for his bowling ball.

As someone who grew up in the sport, Warren loves anything involved with bowling. That’s especially true when he gets onto his two lanes and shares bowling knowledge with his customers. “I love this game. I tell people it’s a game. Now some people try to make a living playing this game and I commend them. But I started playing it because it was a game that I loved,” he said. Warren has always prided himself on the many ideas he’s developed to improve the game. “We are a pro shop, not a bowling center drilling machine,” said Chris, whose shop is open seven days a week. “We’ve still got a way to go. There are so many things my wish list contains. This is just the start of it.”

Inside Line Pricing

Meet Carey Tosello By Stephanie Davis

Each month IBI’s “Inside Line” highlights a team member from one of our loyal advertisers. It's always fun to learn a little something new about people who make things happen at their company and for the industry. This month, we talked with Carey Tosello, founder of eBowl.biz. IBI: How long have you been in the bowling industry? Carey: I grew up in the family bowling alley. After graduating from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo (and bowling on the collegiate circuit), I spent 15 years as the managing partner of our two centers. During that time, I was elected president of the Nor Cal BPA. I founded eBowl.biz in 2003 — 20 years ago! So, I have been in bowling my whole life!

IBI: What does eBowl.biz have planned new in 2024? Carey: We have combined many of our services into a package called Targeted Bowling Marketing (TBM) that will do it all for you and is affordable for centers of all sizes. This package includes daily ads, social posts, targeted birthday ads, website pixel that delivers reminder ads to your website visitors, and an app that gathers all of your reviews and helps you get more 4and 5-star reviews, too. We have proven results from this new package, so we know it delivers for bowling!

IBI: What do you like most about your job? Carey: The people! Bowling people are the best, and I help them grow their business through our digital marketing services. Nothing is better than having them come to me at a show and tell me how much they appreciate what we do for them. 14 IBI January 2024

Carey and Robin stop to take a selfie while hiking in beautiful Patagonia.

IBI: With many bowling proprietors looking at adding diverse attractions to their facilities, what should they know about how you can help them? Carey: Adding new attractions without delivering that message to people in your community is not a path to success. Our services enable us to target people who already like your attractions. This ensures your marketing dollars are being spent most efficiently. Doing this can move the needle for other parts of your business besides just bowling!

IBI: What are the benefits of working with you for the more traditional style bowling centers versus an FEC? Carey: My extensive background in bowling operations, combined with the latest digital marketing tools, gives us an edge. Knowing what makes a bowling center tick means we know which tools will work and which are all flash and no cash! Our job is to implement the tools that work and do all the heavy lifting so proprietors can focus on their customers and staff. We never require a contract as we believe if we aren't delivering for you, then you should fire us.

IBI: What strategy do you employ to keep you organized and on-task? Carey: I use digital reminders like most of us do. But I start the day by listing all the day's to-dos on a piece of paper that stares at me no matter what screen I am on or what software program I use—a very simple yet effective way to stay on track for the day.

IBI: What new trends do you see emerging in the industry in 2024? Carey: The great bowling rebound is something I predicted back in 2020. But it will not last forever, just as the rebound from the 1918 pandemic did not last forever either. Having multiple attractions in your facility is a must, and effectively promoting those attractions will ensure a robust 2024 for operators. Give people another reason to come to your facility besides bowling – and then tell them about it consistently. 16 IBI January 2024

Robin and Carey with a koala bear while traveling in Australia.

IBI: When you're not working, how do you like to spend your time? Carey: I am an adventure junkie, and my wife and I like to travel to remote places around the world. Some of my adventures have included snorkeling in Aitutaki and the Great Barrier Reef, hiking in Patagonia, climbing Half Dome in Yosemite (twice), and backpacking in New Zealand. Next up is hiking/kayaking/adventuring in Vietnam and Thailand.

IBI: What would our readers be surprised to learn about you Carey: From a business viewpoint, many people do not know that I worked for BPAA and was in charge of Bowl Expo when we rebuilt that show from the old BPAA convention to today. It was a very exciting time! On the personal side, I am a former pilot and owned a Beech Bonanza (instrumentrated). I flew in a WWII P-40 at an airshow and did aerobatics in a 1931 Tiger Moth over a beach in Australia.

ChatGPT How AI can enhance your menu By Mike Fernandez

W

e wondered how AI could assist operators in rejuvenating their food menus, so we asked ChatGPT precisely what it could do.

The past few years have shown that bowling center operators are masters of adapting and evolving. One critical aspect of this transformation is enhancing your center's food operations, and the first thing guests see is your menu! Improving your menu to increase ticket sizes doesn't have to be a massive undertaking with the new tools at your disposal in 2024. It's time to adapt again by utilizing AI and other advanced language models to overhaul your menu. From captivating descriptions and exciting dish names to dynamic promotions and pricing strategies, AI brings even more to your table. 18 IBI January 2024

DELICIOUS DESCRIPTIONS

Picture a menu with carefully written descriptions to enhance your existing dining options. This is where ChatGPT comes into play. The language model does an incredible job crafting menu descriptions that sell themselves. Each dish becomes a narrative, with vivid depictions of flavors, textures, and culinary artistry. Rather than a list of nondescript ingredients, your menu can transform into the most profitable sales flyer you've ever made, inviting guests to savor the experience before the first bite, even if it's just chicken tenders for the kids.

Booze and Bites

DESCRIBING FOOD ITEMS

The Prompt Describe a pepperoni pizza in the most delicious way possible for a food menu. Our center is famous for its music.

The AI Result The Pepperoni Symphony: A golden-brown, hand-tossed crust forms the canvas for premium pepperoni and velvety vine-ripened tomato sauce. This is where a melty duet of mozzarella and parmesan creates a harmony of rich, smokey flavors. Each bite is a crescendo of delight! WOW! I'm ready to sink my teeth into that delicious pie right now. How about you?

INNOVATIVE DISH NAMING

Imagine ordering the Bowl 'n' Blaze BBQ Nacho Tower or the Cosmic Caramel Crunch dessert. The language model infuses each dish with personality, turning each order into a more exciting experience. I liked Bowling Ball of Fire Buffalo Dip! These creative dish names capture attention and contribute to your bowling center's overall branding. Guests are likelier to remember and share their experiences when the menu becomes a conversation starter. ChatGPT's ability to generate catchy and thematic names adds a layer of fun to the visit and ensures that your brand identity extends beyond the lanes.

DYNAMIC PROMOTIONS AND PRICING STRATEGIES

As the bowling center experience becomes more dynamic, so should the promotional offers and pricing strategies. AI can help craft weekly promotions that align with specific events or themed nights when you specify your needs. AI brings even more to the table due to its analytical ability. You can use it to better walk the famously delicate balance between profitability and customer satisfaction. It will consider outside factors such as ingredient costs, market trends, and perceived value. Everyone wants stronger margins, but you must ensure your pricing meets customer expectations. This strategic approach maximizes revenue and contributes to a thriving and sustainable business model.

TRY IT OUT!

In our experience, AI isn't quite there to always get you exactly what you need, but it's a great brainstorming tool

AI did an excellent job ensuring that each menu description combines the relationship between your center and its food, setting the stage for a delightful dining experience. Beyond mouthwatering descriptions, ChatGPT lends its creativity to dish naming, often the most challenging yet rewarding part of menu creation. Bowling centers often have unique themes and names, and ChatGPT taps into this ambiance to generate names that resonate seamlessly.

and can answer many questions that food operations face. The more specific you get with it, the stronger of a tool it becomes. Adding this tech tool to your food operation's arsenal adds a layer of creativity and efficiency that can truly enhance the guest experience!

CHANGING TIMES

40 Years of Success By Paul Lane

I

n the 1980s, the city of Orange in New South Wales, Australia, with a population of 39,000, had no tenpin bowling center, no cinema, and no indoor entertainment or recreation facilities. The idea for a bowling center came about on a wet, cold winter day when someone said, “I wish we could go tenpin bowling!” Marisa and Aldo Belmonte ran with the idea and started planning to build a bowling center. They opened their doors in September 1983 as a family-owned and operated, independent center called Orange Tenpin Bowl. The name Belmonte will be familiar as Marisa and Aldo are the proud parents of the international professional superstar bowler Jason Belmonte, who was just a few weeks old when Orange Tenpin Bowl first opened its doors. However, this story is not about Jason. It is about a dynamite, custom-built facility featuring 16 lanes, pool tables, and an amusement arcade. It is a center driven by extensive league bowling and professional coaching programs at all levels, plus an aggressive marketing program. “In the ‘80s and ‘90s, we were jam-packed with leagues," said Marisa. “Then, times changed, and people no longer wanted to bowl in a work-related or shift workers leagues, and fewer women were available during the day for daytime leagues. But we still wanted our center [to offer] league bowling. That

22 IBI January 2024

is when we dug in even deeper with coaching and league promotion programs. A few years ago, we adopted the BPAA LTB program, because we needed an easy-to-follow program to offer new bowlers, especially juniors,” said Marisa. “Plus, we offer coaching at all levels by two staff members who are Tenpin Bowling Australia (TBA) Silver Level Coaches.” Today they have 24 leagues running during weekday mornings, afternoons, and evenings, including six youth leagues and two continuously running leagues since the center opened in 1983.

KEYS TO

SUCCESS

• CONSISTENT, SOLID ATTENTION TO LEAGUE BOWLING results in big success • COACHING and LTB programs • OUTSOURCING FOOD became a winner post-COVID-19 • UPGRADES and REINVESTMENT result in excellent customer response • LOCATION-BASED ENTERTAINMENT creates a draw • Delivering FRIENDLY SERVICE with a genuine smile • AGGRESSIVE MARKETING programs • LOVE WHAT YOU DO

(Marisa has bowled in one of those leagues weekly for the past 40 years.) “Yes, it was hard work,” says Marisa. “But leagues are all about repeat business, and our league bowlers are like family members to us, and we treat them accordingly.”

In addition to the ongoing league programs, the center offers a myriad of traditional promotions, ranging from birthday party packages that include food and beverage specials on request, seasonal holiday promotions, special game pricing for juniors, seniors, card-holding people with disabilities and their caretakers, and fun bowling activities with disco lights. “Like most other businesses, we had to close the center during the COVID-19 pandemic. When we could reopen, we decided to try running without a café and offer soft drinks, tea, coffee, snacks, and sandwiches, and have a caterer provide preordered and prepaid hot food platters and grazing boxes for larger groups. This has worked well for us. It also saves having the stress of trying to fill café staff shifts, there is no food waste, and we can still provide the same constant service.” Interestingly, Orange Tenpin Bowl has a liquor license that allows customers to bring their own alcohol subject to rules regarding: the number of drinks per person; the type of drink (for example, no straight liquor); booking a party of eight or more three days in advance; and age requirements. Amusement machines on the concourse and in the arcade are another popular revenue source. Marisa tells us they own their machines, including some old-school ones and a few newer models. “We find customers want to play games they cannot play on their home or mobile devices.” Marisa and Aldo Belmonte divide their responsibilities and work as a team. When they are considering upgrades, Marisa said, “We rely on our son, Jason, to keep us updated regarding new technology and any new day-to-day 24 IBI January 2024

operations.” Aldo manages all the finances and maintenance upkeep while Marisa focuses on marketing. The Belmontes use various marketing tools to promote all aspects of their business, including advertising on TV, radio and newspapers, social media, and a website, plus soft selling — a friendly approach of chatting with and getting to know customers. Upgrading and reinvesting in the center has been a focal point over the years. “Our most recent modernizations have had a fabulous response because of their visual and interactive nature,” says Marisa. “These include a bowling media wall, Clutch and Specto bowling, and QubicaAMF bowling furniture.” Marisa says, “We pride ourselves in giving service with a genuine smile and we are always trying to give our patrons an enjoyable experience, whether they are having a friendly, fun outing or participating in many of our leagues or tournaments.” Today, 40 years after opening Orange Tenpin Bowl, Marisa and Aldo are still the only game in Orange. Yet, wisely, they manage and promote the business as if there’s competition nearby. “We cannot lower our guard, regardless of having the only game in town,” says Marisa. “The hospitality business is fickle, and we must maintain our stance, continue to provide outstanding service, and be gracious hosts to our guests.”

Paul Lane has had an extensive background in marketing since 1960, especially in the international arena, in a career that spans more than 50 countries. This includes a 30-year tenure with AMF Bowling Inc. (1960-1990). Since 1990 he has worked as an independent contractor assisting more than a dozen major domestic and international companies in the bowling industry in a variety of marketing assignments.

The

GAMIFIED BUSINESS

By Kevin Williams

Embracing the Demand for Social Entertainment

onsumer influence drives change, and in the bowling and FEC industry, it's reshaping the business landscape and opening profitable new opportunities for operators.

C

Retro is the go-to for many sites, with classic video machines and a heavy pinball offering feeding off nostalgia. With the growing hunger for sophisticated social experiences, operators are now looking for more robust immersion.

What some refer to as "competitive socializing" has been a social explosion traced back to early UK developments seen with chains like Lane7 and All Star Lanes. This movement addressed the shifts in social engagement of a changing generation of guests.

Many amusement spaces include VR as the latest zeitgeist in entertainment experiences. However, many other sophisticated elements are being added to the social entertainment mix. Mixed entertainment includes bowling, gamified darts, shuffleboard, and mini-golf.

One of the fundamentals to change has been how entertainment is consumed. Bowling has become a more multimedia experience with technological advances and guest expectations. Operators have reinvested in their facilities to offer guests the latest projection and large screens, stylish furnishings, VIP lanes and other immersive experiences, touchscreen kiosk support for food and beverage, and an enhanced offering of games and attractions.

Technology-infused entertainment, or secondary entertainment supporting the primary bowling anchor, creates a potent mix that enhances the social entertainment aspects of the approach; competition between guests generates fun and repeat visitation.

Trends to Understand

All ages are looking for fun! Today's recreation has become supercharged to offer a more compelling experience for an older audience; not an afterthought for children, it is a dedicated entertainment space, themed to keep the vibe of the social environment, with games that work with the "kidult" audience. Amusement had previously depended on redemption for the FEC business, but with the social entertainment focus, amusement now needs to create relevant experiences. 26 IBI January 2024

The lesson: fun is no longer just a singular activity but a variety of activities infused with technology, creating competition and socialization.

SPOTLIGHT: SMALL TOWN INNOVATION Who says you have to be in a big city to have a successful business? Ludington, MI, is nestled along the shoreline of picturesque Lake Michigan. It is a tourist destination for sandy beaches and charming lighthouses. However, in recent years this small town of 7,700 has a new destination: STIX, a multi-venue attraction that includes a restaurant, bowling center, and biergarten. COVID-19 hurt the original restaurant; the renovation required razing the building and starting from scratch. Now the primary attraction is a two-story, nautical-themed eatery and bar, featuring a 30-foot sailing boat hanging from the ceiling and an outdoor patio designed to look like a ship deck. The outdoor biergarten includes a bar with an array of backyard activities for kids and adults: corn hole, bocce, and giant patio games like Jenga and Connect 4. Between the restaurant and the bowling center is a bandshell for outdoor concerts and a 1945 tugboat on display. It’s not just summer-time fun, either. Events like pumpkin carving, ice sculptures, and a Christmas tree tour complete with hot chocolate and hot toddies make it a year-round place to gather. The bowling lanes are state-of-the-art immersive Brunswick lanes which allow guests to play animated games like Angry Birds or Horse along with traditional bowling. Ingenuity and using the environment you have can do big things. STIX is a very unique venue.

Reservations

Control the

CRAZY

By Monique Simpson

Being prepared saves headaches for you and your guests

M

any bowling centers will ask an everyday, essential question: How many are coming in today and tonight?

How prepared are you for your customers on your busiest days? How do you know if you don't have a solid reservation process? It can be overwhelming trying to figure out the many challenges that pop up: • How many walk-ins can you accept? • Will guest arrival create a bottleneck effect? • How are you going to check in the crowd and do you have enough staff to handle all the guests? • Do you have an ample amount of food prepped? Managing guest numbers, from pre-booked customers to walk-ins, and smoothly checking them in doesn't have to be a massive headache every day; you need the right tools to help you "control the crazy," and an excellent online booking system will allow you to do just that. It will replace guesswork with pre-known information, which will help you be more prepared. Allowing bookings of parties, events, and lanes will help you gauge how many people are coming in at specific times and on specific days so that you know beforehand how many staff members are needed, preventing overstaffing or understaffing. Knowing how many guests will arrive will help you figure out staff numbers needed for the day and help you control when these pre-booked guests arrive while preventing bottlenecks at check-in. Some online software companies even allow

28 IBI January 2024

you to check in guests via your account, which will help you save time when checking in guests. Nobody likes long lines and delays, so by doing metered arrivals at check-in, it will become a smoother process, and everyone will be happy. Another advantage of having pre-booked customers is that it allows you to collect a deposit or the total amount, which helps quicken and simplify the check-in process. During the booking process, you can collect all the event or party details, such as the birthday child's name, age, T-shirt size, food they've paid for via the add-ons, etc. Since this information has been accurately recorded during the booking process, you can prepare and budget for the event or party, ensuring that the right amount of food and drink is ready and that any special requests have been taken care of. Ensuring that nothing has been overlooked guarantees that your guests will have a great time and will keep returning for more. An online booking system helps bowling centers master the ability to manage guest numbers effectively. A smoother checkin process and ensuring proper staffing and food preparation can help elevate your customers’ experience from ordinary to extraordinary. Every detail counts, and with the right strategies in place, your customers will have a memorable event and leave wanting to come back for more.

EXPANSIONS, OPENINGS, & NEW BEGINNINGS

The activity for entertainment centers is busy on both sides of the pond

MICHIGAN

MASSACHUSETTS

ZAP ZONE XL is Lansing’s new treat. Twenty years ago, Zap Zone opened in Delta Township, MI, in 6,000 square feet and only offered laser tag. Now it has moved to 125,000 square feet transforming former Younkers department store which has been empty since 2018, into a massive entertainment center. With a $10 million investment, the choices are extravagant: 12 lanes of bowling, go-karts, cornhole games, axe throwing, and, last but not least, a carousel. Hungry? There is a restaurant and sports bar. For arcade devotees, there is an expanded arcade.

A new entertainment complex is coming to North Attleboro. LAUNCH ENTERTAINMENT PARK will boast a diverse range of attractions, including trampolines, state-of-the-art bowling lanes, axe throwing, mini-golf, virtual reality games, and an expansive arcade and redemption center. Further, Launch will also feature a full-service restaurant and a bar.

WASHINGTON VIRGINIA Well-established BOWL AMERICA in Sterling has undergone a major renovation and is now part of the Bowlero family of bowling centers. The parent company acquired the center in 2021 and is now officially rebranded to Bowlero. The exterior is getting a facelift while the interior goes through a major metamorphosis. Huge new video screens have been added at the end of each lane, as well as new score monitors over each lane. The shoe rental area and party room is being repurposed into an expanded arcade game area. The diner-style restaurant is closed and will be replaced by a full bar with seating around it.

30 IBI January 2024

PINSTRIPES, the Italian American restaurant and entertainment concept, will open its first Pacific Northwest location in downtown Bellevue. The company’s venues are known for woodfired pizza, bowling lanes and bocce courts. This 21,000-square-foot space is set to open in mid-2024.

INDIANA Climb, crawl, and slide; there's fun for everyone! 2024 is going to be lots of fun for customers at a new indoor adventure park. There are already three other locations in Indiana, but URBAN AIR ADVENTURE PARK in Evansville will be the crowning glory. The attractions cater to any level and age. In fact, there is something fun for everyone. Here’s the list of fun that will await customers: trampolines, climbing walls, ropes course, giant inflatable DropZone airbag, the sky rider, laser tag, mini-golf, trapeze, bumper cars, dodgeball, go-kart tracks, bowling, tubes playground, warrior course, battle beam, wipeout, and slam dunk zone. Are you ready? Evansville is ready, set, and excited for Urban Air Adventure Park.

TEXAS

Texas Cities are busy welcoming duck and ten-pin bowling.

Galveston 14 LANES of Brunswick state-of-the-art bowling is opening at Primetime Cinema. Through the partnering with Papa’s Pizza nearby, bowlers will be able to enjoy pizza, sandwiches and muffalettas.

Dallas EVO ENTERTAINMENT is a new dynamic entertainment spot in the Prestonwood area, combining a movie theater, bowling center, and a games arcade. The bowling will be duckpin which is becoming prevalent in upscale entertainment venues competing with standard ten-pin bowling. There will be private event spaces and a full-service bar including food.

Austin Activity and gaming chain PINS MECHANICAL is opening a new location alongside arcade and bar 16-Bit. There will be 24 (here they are again!) duckpin bowling lanes, over 30 pinball machines, and over 40 arcade games. The location will also have four bars, a courtyard and two spaces for private events. The entertainment is for the entire family with different types of go-karts for children and a faster model for adults. The toy store offers customers the ability to build their own custom teddy bears. For private parties and events, there are spaces with fireplaces and televisions. The goal is to cater to everyone of all ages, from little ones to adults; it would appear the goal has been achieved.

BOWLING AROUND THE GLOBE Here are some of the UK’s new sites

LIVERPOOL ROXY LANES has officially opened. It is the third Roxy venue in Liverpool. Although it provides the brand’s trademark “Booze and Ball Games,” it will also be family friendly during the daytime. Activities? Guests will choose from American pool, shuffleboard, ice-free curling, tech darts, karaoke booths, beer pong, ten-pin bowling and more. Food will feature Italian focaccia pizzas, ‘Roxy Fries,’ and chili cheese bites.

LANCASHIRE WALTERZ ENTERTAINMENT CENTRE at Newton Hall Holiday Park is ready for action. According to CEO Rob Kearsley, the venue “combines the timeless charm of a circus fairground with modern interactive games and cool dining choices.” With the carnival delights, there are ten-pin bowling lanes, innovative AR darts, and vintage favorites from pool to pinball. Karaoke booths are also waiting to be enjoyed. IBI January 2024 31
