ROLLING INTO NEW MARKETS: BOWLING GAINS GROUND IN NON-TRADITIONAL VENUES

Bowling lanes are popping up in a variety of venues these days—from bars and social clubs to shopping centers, restaurants, and other entertainment complexes. These compact, easily accessible bowling setups introduce more people to the sport outside traditional bowling centers or family entertainment centers (FECs). As consumer lifestyles evolve and the demand for multiattraction entertainment grows, businesses adapt to stay relevant and position themselves for future growth.

In light of this trend, we feature two stories about companies that have broadened their services to include bowling. The first, reported by Paul Lane, explores Spare Time Boutique Bowling and Events. Located in the Van der Valk Gilze Hotel in Tilburg, the Netherlands, this intimate four-lane setup caters to hotel guests and local residents. The second story, by Mark Miller, delves into a small family-owned theater chain that has expanded by adding 11 bowling lanes along with food, beverage, and gaming options.

Food for thought: With bowling becoming more accessible, how can you leverage this trend for your business?

Bowling Industry Leader

This month we feature Andy Johnston from Westgate Entertainment Center.

Westgate Entertainment Center // Lima, OH

30 Lanes // Arcade // Redemption Center // Virtual Reality

Favorite part of being in the industry: My business has allowed me to be a part of the community, which is a great strength of our industry. I love the diversity of my job! One minute, I am developing marketing strategies and looking over payroll, and the next minute, I am waiting on customers at the snack bar or front desk. Every day is different!

Currently, the most challenging part of operating your business: Staffing remains our primary challenge, as we are perpetually in hiring mode under the "Always Looking" philosophy. It's crucial to proactively identify potential leaders within our current team and develop them early. Supporting our staff's growth in skills and positions is essential, as our top performers are eager to advance.

Motivating staff to perform at a high level: We regularly communicate with our staff, inquiring about schedule needs and what fits their skill capabilities. Are they getting bored with their current position, or is there another position they would like to try? Being flexible helps retain good staff and keeps them motivated.

One tip you would give to less experienced operators: Don't be afraid to reach out to other people in our industry, whether it be other operators or vendors. Try to get to association meetings and trade shows. These are great opportunities to network and get some time off-site to think about your operation from a global perspective.

Opinion on the future of league and tournament play: League bowling and tournaments will remain essential to our industry. We are fortunate to have league bowling in our industry because it fills weekday lane availability, and

these customers can be very long-term. Lifestyles and priorities for people have changed, so creating programs that fit is important.

Do you host any special events unique to your center? We've hosted an after-school bowling program for over 25 years. We have almost 500 elementary school kids weekly for 14 weeks, bussing them to the center Monday through Thursday. The program can be a lot of work, but it has helped us establish a great relationship with our local schools. The kids often come in on the weekends for open bowling and birthday parties, plus it brings the parents to the center every week, allowing for the potential of extra sales.

Tips on security: We hire two local uniformed sheriffs every Friday and Saturday night in our busy season. You have to have actual deputies or officers for security; otherwise, it just isn't effective. We also try to ensure the parking lot is well-lit; people want to feel safe.

What do you see as the next big trend(s) in bowling? Even though bowling will be our core product for most proprietors, we need to look for attractions that reach different demographics. You will continue to see centers adding bigger arcades, axe throwing, escape rooms, etc., to keep people coming back.•

Successfully Managing

GEN Z STAFFERS

Five Tips to Connect and Mentor Your Younger Team Members

Bowling centers can thrive on the energy and passion of Gen Z staffers and volunteer coaches. Managing this dynamic group requires a unique set of strategies to harness their enthusiasm and dedication effectively. Here are five essential tips for bowling center managers and leaders to create a positive and productive environment for their Gen Z team members and volunteer coaches.

Embrace Digital Communication

Gen Z is known for its digital prowess and reliance on technology. To connect effectively, leverage digital communication channels. Utilize messaging apps and social media platforms to keep everyone in the loop regarding schedules, updates, and important information. Creating a virtual community for sharing ideas and experiences can enhance teamwork and foster a sense of camaraderie among team members and volunteer coaches. Your best course of action is to ask them what apps they already use and leverage their way of connecting to your virtual community.

Tailor Training Programs to Their Learning Style

Members of Gen Z have grown up in a fast-paced, information-rich environment. Incorporate multiple learning styles when designing programs to train your team and volunteers. Technology allows us to check some training boxes via video tutorials and online modules, but you want to reinforce them with in-person experiences. Training and reinforcing your training regularly will ensure that your people are confident they are doing what they

must to succeed. In all cases, make sure you have an opportunity for engagement and multimedia elements to keep your teams engaged and motivated.

Encourage a Collaborative and Inclusive Atmosphere

Bowling is a social activity, and creating a collaborative and inclusive atmosphere is crucial for success. Foster a sense of community among young team members and volunteer coaches by organizing regular team-building events inside and outside your center. Encourage them to share ideas, strategies, and success stories, creating a supportive environment where everyone feels valued. By embracing diversity and inclusivity, you'll build a stronger team that resonates with the diverse community of bowlers. In addition, you can utilize this time to teach

Bring Convenience to Your Customers & Staff

them how to strengthen their teams as coaches and employees. Managers can lead by example and follow up to ensure they are creating a collaborative and inclusive atmosphere within their team.

Remember to Teach Them Skills

We've all heard someone complain about how youth today do not work as hard or know as much as we did when we were their age. While that may be true, we often forget the time, energy, and mentorship it took to get us where we are today. You are likely providing many coaches and team members with their first job. Make sure you take the time to teach them the skills necessary to thrive in the job and not simply assume they know how to do it. The fear of doing something wrong can often override opportunities to take initiative, and we need to account for that in our volunteers and staff. No task is too small to show your team how to complete it. Something as simple as showing them how to change a trash bag and where to put it could mean a huge difference in the work you see from your staff. Do not simply create a checklist for them; make that checklist your training guide.

Provide Opportunities for Leadership Development:

Gen Z individuals are ambitious and value opportunities for growth and leadership. Recognize and nurture their

leadership potential by providing pathways for advancement within the center. Establish mentorship initiatives that pair experienced coaches with younger counterparts, fostering a culture of knowledge exchange. Training sessions on leadership skills, communication, and effective team management should also be offered to empower Gen Z team members and volunteer coaches in their roles.

Successfully managing Gen Z'ers in the bowling center requires combining digital communication, tailored training programs, a collaborative atmosphere, technology integration, and leadership development opportunities. By embracing the unique characteristics of Gen Z, bowling center managers can cultivate a vibrant and motivated team. As a result, not only will the bowlers benefit from innovative coaching techniques, but the volunteer coaches and a well-trained team will also find fulfillment in contributing to the growth and success of the bowling community. •

Strategies for Sustaining Traffic Amid Economic Challenges

Q:As economic pressures mount, are we facing a slowdown in spending on leisure activities?

Economic indicators paint a grim picture: consumer credit card debt is soaring, many households have maxed out their cards, and inflationary pressures are squeezing budgets. These factors are contributing to a decline in consumer spending on discretionary activities like dining out or enjoying a drink at a bar.

Reports from around our industry confirm that gross sales have slowed by 5% to 15% and in some cases more. While it is too early to tell if this is just a temporary trend or one that will persist, savvy operators should have their antennas up and proactively explore marketing strategies to navigate potential economic turbulence.

While drastic price cuts may not be the ideal response to a business slowdown, understanding and implementing innovative pricing strategies can be a savvy move in challenging times. Pricing strategies play a pivotal role in influencing consumer behavior, particularly when households are budget-conscious. Bowling and family entertainment center (FEC) operators should analyze how different pricing approaches can yield optimal results.

Not convinced about the effectiveness of coupons, discounts, or deals?

Studies show that 93% of consumers use coupons or promotional codes at least once a year. Coupons have been a cornerstone of marketing for over a century, with successful examples like Coke’s “free trial” coupon from 1887 and Procter & Gamble’s pioneering “buy one get one” (BOGO) offer from 1920. However, effective pricing strategies extend beyond couponing, encompassing various tactics to drive sales.

Here are some strategic pricing suggestions to boost sales during challenging economic conditions:

PSYCHOLOGICAL PRICING BOOSTS SALES

Utilize odd numbers for pricing, especially for lower-priced transactions such as bowling, food, and beverages. For example, pricing an item at $19.99 rather than $20 creates a perception of a discounted price. Odd-numbered pricing like $19.97 or $19.95 can also enhance the perceived value.

amount will produce better results. For example, promoting a $20 bowling package with 25% off will pull better than if you were to offer $5 off. On the other hand, when promoting a $160 birthday party a savings of $40 will perform better.

SEQUENTIAL DISCOUNTING

Offer incremental discounts for successive purchases might be a fit especially for operators who are good at selling additional items to guests who stay longer. An example of this might be, bowl your first game for $5.99, a second game for $4.99, a third for $3.99, etc.

BUNDLE AND PACKAGE PRICING

When promoting bundled deals, always highlight the value by comparing it to the total cost of the items if purchased individually. Clearly display the savings to ensure customers can see the benefit without having to calculate it themselves.

STRATEGIC COUPONS

Coupons offering $10 off a $20 or more purchase are straightforward for customers to understand and present a significant saving. This makes them highly appealing to most consumers, who perceive the discount as a substantial value.

BOGO OFFERS

Perhaps the style of coupon that consumers and merchants like best is the good ol’ Buy One and Get One, aka the BOGO! There are numerous styles of BOGOs you might consider but the most popular version with the consumer is Buy One at

MARKETING

Discounting using a percent off is perceived as a better deal by most consumers when the product they are considering is priced under $100. On the contrary, if the product is priced at $100 or more, it is just the reverse, and showing a dollar

Part Three of a three-part series

Get Big Bucks From Your Website Visitors

Tracking sales to measure results and optimize ROI has never been easier

This month marks the conclusion of Darin Spindler's three-part series focused on tapping into substantial revenue streams through your website tailored explicitly for bowling centers and FECs. Over the previous two installments, Spindler detailed the foundational steps to transform a bowling center's website into a powerful marketing and sales tool. Here's a quick recap:

STEP 1 Develop a compelling reason for consumers to provide their contact information, thereby growing your customer database. In case you missed it, you can check out the first article here:

Being able to trace the results of your digital marketing investments is critical. As a direct response marketer, I hold marketing and advertising expenditures accountable, especially when looking at digital campaigns. For example, if you spend $500 on a Facebook campaign that adds 200 new names to your database, the cost comes to $2.50 per name. The subsequent challenge is to maximize revenue from these leads. While online businesses have many tools to track a lead from acquisition to sale, tracking is more complex but still feasible for brick-and-mortar operations like bowling centers.

We track sales for some of our Bowling Marketing Solutions members using simple, non-invasive tools that don't require additional hardware and are easy to use. For instance, we discussed various methods for distributing offers last month, such as a $10 open bowling certificate. When customers redeem these offers, it’s easy to track the redemption and any additional spending on food, beverages, and other amenities during their visit.

This is very easy to do using a Point of Sale (POS) system. Many centers are starting a tab for their guests when they check-in, allowing all expenditures made during the visit to

STEP 2 Implement a series of automated and evergreen promotions designed to consistently drive traffic to your center, all without requiring daily input from your staff. For a refresher, here's a link to the second article.

In this final installment, Spindler highlights the critical importance of tracking sales generated from your special offers. This capability is pivotal for making informed decisions and effectively gauging the impact of your marketing efforts.

be recorded on one bill. When guests close their tab at the end of their visit, your staff can assign a value to the offer that initially brought them in the door.

Guests Embrace Digital Coupons

For centers still using printed coupons, tracking additional spending noted on the coupon can be done manually. However, as digital coupons grow more popular among guests for their convenience and among center owners for their operational efficiency, there is a system available that integrates coupons into a user's digital wallet, much like a boarding pass on a smartphone. This approach ensures each coupon is redeemed only once, preventing multiple uses from a single printout, and allows for quickly adding any extra spending to the transaction record.

As digital technology continues to evolve, so does how we can enhance customer interactions and streamline operations. Below, I've outlined how our system at Bowling Marketing Solutions works, allowing for the integration of digital coupons into digital wallets, simplifying the redemption process, and enhancing tracking capabilities.

The end-to-end integrated Management, POS and Payments solution for bowling entertainment centers

With both systems working tightly together, you can deliver the right service for your guests in the right places throughout your business.

Far beyond just a technical integration, our partnership provides our centers with peace of mind. We are integrating our Conqueror X enterprise system to work seamlessly with Square’s Payments and POS technology and broader ecosystem to deliver more value to our customers and a platform for future growth.

Visitus @BowlExpoBooth#156

Digital Marketing

STEP 1

The customer receives an email with a link to print the coupon or save it to their digital wallet.

STEP 2

The customer accesses the coupon directly from their wallet.

STEP 3

Upon visiting the center, the customer shows the coupon on their device. The staff redeems it by scanning a QR code and entering a password to validate the offer. They can then add any additional charges incurred during the visit.

STEP 4

You review reports to assess the effectiveness of the offer. Here are some numbers from a bowling center tracking a FREE $10 Open Bowling offer.

From one case study, a bowling center saw 291 people download their $10 open bowling certificate, with 75 redeeming it in person and generating an additional $6,757 in secondary spending! This equates to an average of over $90 in extra revenue per redeemed certificate, demonstrating the offer's success in attracting visitors and encouraging significant additional spending.

These insights often turn skeptics into believers, revealing the potential for significant annual revenue from even a single well-tracked offer. By continually refining these offers based on tracked data, you can drive more traffic and increase revenue more effectively.

You can consistently generate substantial revenue by aggressively capturing data and communicating with your list through automated and customized messages. Tracking each offer's performance is crucial to understanding what works and what doesn't, enabling continuous improvement and more effective marketing strategies.

Stop thinking about your website as just a place customers and prospects visit for information; you need to see it for what it is, which is one of the most valuable assets of your business to grow your database and generate sales on demand!

BOOSTING FOOD AND BEVERAGE SALES

ABC East Lanes Streamlines Service and Increases Profits

At ABC East Lanes in Harrisburg, PA, a transformation that began in 2022 has reaped substantial rewards. With the introduction of the Brunswick Sync Kiosk system, this bustling bowling center has not only boosted its food and beverage sales by an impressive 25-30% but also significantly eased staffing challenges and enhanced customer satisfaction.

Manager Dylan Bower faced a predicament familiar to many entertainment venues as COVID restrictions lifted: a surge in consumer demand and a severe staff shortage. The solution? A strategic upgrade to the center's ordering system. "We needed a way to help our staff work more efficiently and improve service speed, especially in our food and beverage areas. Often, we had long wait times that were cutting into our guests' game time," Bower explained.

Established in 1957 and rebuilt in 2007 after a fire, ABC East Lanes has remained a traditional league house with a modern flair, featuring six escape rooms, an arcade, a snack bar, and a fullservice bar. Clearly, a forward-thinking solution was necessary to keep pace with customer expectations and the center's growth.

Bower continues, "We had been looking around to find a way to operate more efficiently and provide our customers with a better experience." As staffing challenges continued, he knew they had to make a change.

The decision to implement the Brunswick Sync Kiosk system marked a turning point. The installation included four Sync kiosks, a Sync POS system, Sync scoring, and Brunswick’s Nitro pin deck lighting system. This full Sync integration was completed in just about two weeks.

The impact was immediate. Guests now revel in the convenience of placing orders themselves, either at kiosks or via tablets. "Our customers appreciate the self-service option. It reduces their wait time significantly during our busiest periods," Bower noted. The system notifies customers via text when orders are ready for pickup or when a staff member delivers directly to their lanes or tables.

This new system has resonated particularly well with the younger clientele, who prefer the autonomy of ordering when they want, without the delay of waiting for a server. This preference has translated into tangible gains: a 25-30% increase in food and beverage revenue from the kiosks alone.

The benefits extend to the staff as well. The Sync Kiosk has reduced the physical demands of their roles. Previously, team members would take

orders, give them to the kitchen or bar, and then deliver items back to customers—a time-consuming and labor-intensive process. "Now, our operations are smoother, and staff can focus on enhancing the guest experience elsewhere in the center," Bower remarked. This efficiency has boosted staff morale and increased their tips, with average gratuities rising to 15%.

An unexpected yet welcomed outcome has been improved staff retention. "In the past, we often faced higher turnover rates than I would have liked. Now, we find that our employees are happier, earning more, and choosing to stay longer," Bower observed. This stability has been crucial for maintaining a consistent, quality guest experience.

While some of the center's older, longtime league bowlers still prefer the old-school way of doing things, most love the new system for its speed and simplicity. Embracing this technology isn't about keeping up with today's expectations but setting ABC East Lanes up for future success. By modernizing operations, the center is keeping pace with the ever-changing demands of its guests, ensuring it stays relevant and competitive.

"The kiosks have been an invaluable addition to our staffing team. They always show up, they don't make mistakes, and they don't complain. They are a crucial part of our operation, helping our staff perform more efficiently," said Bower.

The Brunswick Sync Kiosk system has revolutionized ABC East Lanes, proving that technological enhancements can significantly improve customer satisfaction, operational efficiency, and financial performance. As ABC East Lanes continues to adapt and grow, it sets a benchmark for how bowling centers can thrive in an ever-evolving consumer landscape.

Anything Bower would change?

"This has been a huge positive for our operations and customers. If there's one thing I'd change, I wish we had implemented this system sooner."•

From to TENPINS THEATERS

Nearly nine years into serving with the U.S. Air Force, Bill Barstow realized a longer career in the military wasn't for him, and he wanted to find something else to do to feed his family. His opportunity came when he and his wife, Colleen, saw a newspaper advertisement about a single-screen movie theatre for sale in Plattsmouth, NE, a small town south of Omaha.

"I remember walking in there to understand it a bit and thinking about growing up in Detroit," he said. "My mother was raising four kids, so there wasn't a lot of money, and I was always working selling greeting cards or garden seeds door-todoor. I was always doing something."

"So, I went into the theatre and thought, 'I could sell this, I could market this. I could make this into something.' We didn't have any money, didn't know what a land contract was, and would make payments. The owner said he's going to need a down payment. He wanted $1,200, which we didn't have, so we got a cash advance from three credit cards and bought our first theatre. We got in there and worked really, really hard."

moved beyond lone-screen venues. The duo began attending conventions like ShoWest, recently called CinemaCon, to learn more about the industry.

That was in 1988 and proved to be the start of what has since become quite a successful family business. Called Main Street Theaters, it initially focused more on providing a place for community members to gather than just somewhere to watch a movie.

Within a year, they added small-town locations in Iowa, Kansas, and Nebraska. Colleen quit her regular job at a small bank to focus entirely on their enterprise, which soon

During their travels, they would learn that food and beverage were an essential part of the customer experience. They started by introducing hot food to the typical concession fare and, later, more elaborate restaurant offerings, including securing a liquor license.

This innovative duo realized that to maximize their investment, they needed to add more entertainment options for their customers. That's when it hit them: they were promoting twohour blocks of entertainment. Whether those blocks involved movies, food and beverage, games, or something else, they knew they needed to combine multiple options.

The Barstows committed themselves to diversifying their operations. 60-year-old Bill remembered growing up in bowling centers in Detroit, and even though his father, Chuck Sr., and brother, Chuck Jr., were better on the lanes, his bowling past made him think it could be part of the future.

They discovered the perfect opportunity at Bayshore Shopping Center in the Milwaukee suburb of Glendale. After over a decade as iPic Entertainment, it closed in March 2018 and was dormant until 2022, when the Barstows bought it.

It was the perfect place for them to get into bowling, featuring six movie screens, 11 Brunswick bowling lanes, a bar and a restaurant, and 7,000 square feet of gaming. They refurbished the entire place and rebranded it as ACX Entertainment, with a soft opening in August and a grand opening right before Thanksgiving.

While the Wisconsin location is the first of their properties to feature bowling, if it proves successful, the Barstows hope to expand their bowling entertainment center concept elsewhere.

"We're open to bowling anywhere we can," Bill said. "We recognize we're neophytes in the industry, and we're careful to move slowly and deliberately. Any opportunity we get to learn from people who have been in the business is good for us. We're eyes wide open. We want to make sure we don't overpromise and under-deliver. But we think the future has a lot to do with bowling." Collectively, they now own 49 screens at six locations and are expanding further in 2024.

Today, all three of their children – son Michael and daughters Amy and Andrea – are involved in the business somehow. Andrea owned her own theatre at age 16 and is now executive vice president of marketing and partnerships. At the same time, Michael serves as executive vice president for business development, and Amy recently returned to assist Andrea with social media and events.

Despite less marketing budgets than major chains, Main Street/ACX is succeeding because of Barstow's selling ability. They promote on television and radio stations and even participate in local parades, regional film festivals, chambers of commerce, and fundraising events.

"It's all been incremental," Bill said. "You aren't certain you will survive at all. But that's one of the reasons why we diversified." The Barstows embody a work ethic and sense of "Why not?" The results are the proof. Of course, adding bowling always helps.•

Competitive Strategies

MAXIMIZING PROFITS

Seasonal Pop-Ups, Branded Goods, and Elevated Dining Drive Revenue

Family entertainment centers have evolved significantly from traditional bowling alleys to multi-faceted venues that cater to all ages, groups, and interests. Family entertainment centers must diversify and enhance their offerings to increase revenue, repeat visitation, and dwell time to keep up with consumer expectations and trends. By adding themed experiences, selling customized products, and offering a premium culinary experience, centers can create a memorable experience that guests are excited to enjoy and return to.

THEMED POP-UP EXPERIENCES

Pop-up-themed experiences can be particularly effective for capitalizing on short-term trends or local events. You might try a retro gaming night, where you decorate your family entertainment center in an '80s neon style, encourage guests to dress like the 80s, and promote special prices for your retro arcade and pinball games.

Aligning with local, regional, or national sports events, such as the Super Bowl, March Madness, or the NBA finals, by theming the family entertainment center in the colors of the competing or local teams, offering game-day snacks, and broadcasting the match on large screens throughout the venue can also draw in sports fans who wish to enjoy the game while knocking down some pins and knocking back some drinks.

GET THE GOODS

Building brand loyalty and increasing revenue through the sale of merchandise and swag involves creating a memorable experience and offering branded products that resonate well with your guests. This enhances the guest's overall experience and turns them into brand ambassadors who wear and use their merchandise, promoting the center in their everyday lives.

Develop a Unique Brand

First and foremost, you must establish a robust and appealing brand identity that can be seamlessly translated into various types of merchandise. This includes a recognizable logo, a catchy tagline, and a consistent color scheme that reflects the center's atmosphere and general vibe. This brand identity should be prominently displayed and reinforced throughout the venue, from the decor to the staff uniforms to your online presence.

Curate Your Products

The key to successful merchandise sales lies in offering desirable products that your guests will likely use in their daily lives. Here are a few examples to get the ideas flowing: Apparel: T-shirts, hoodies, socks, and hats featuring the center's logo or trendy phrases and memes that resonate with your guests across age spectrums. These items should be of high enough quality to be worn regularly to maximize the center's exposure in public.

Accessories: Custom bowling balls and pins, branded wristbands, towels, and water bottles are great for frequent bowlers who may appreciate high-quality gear. Customizing bowling balls and shoes can also appeal to your regular bowlers.

Novelty Items: Keychains, bottle openers, stickers, magnets, and even a mascot (if you have one) plushes that are lower in cost can serve as impulse buys.

Placement and Promotion

Merchandise should be strategically displayed to attract maximum customer interest. Eye-catching displays at the entrance or high-traffic areas can draw attention and drive impulse purchases. Clear signage in high-visibility areas that communicates the availability of merchandise and any ongoing promotions can also boost sales.

Competitive Strategies

Introducing promotions such as "Buy a game package, get a shirt at half price," or "Spend $50 and receive a free water bottle," can significantly increase the average transaction size. These offers can be especially compelling if timed with special events, holidays, and tournaments.

ELEVATE YOUR F&B

Delivering an enhanced and elevated food and beverage program within a family entertainment center transcends the typical offerings of nachos, pizza, and pitchers of beer or soda. By transforming your family entertainment center into a culinary destination, you can attract a wider audience, encourage longer stays, and significantly increase the spend per visit.

Specialty Offerings

Introduce a menu beyond the basics, featuring premium toppings such as aged cheddar, applewood smoked bacon, and homemade sauces. Specialty dishes could include artisan flatbreads, seafood options like grilled salmon or shrimp tacos, and vegetarian or vegan alternatives that cater to all dietary preferences. The key is to use high-quality, fresh ingredients that elevate the taste and appeal of each dish.

Chef-Designed Menu

Hire a chef to design the menu and ensure the culinary standards are consistently high. This move improves the quality of food and allows for seasonal menus, unique weekend dishes, and themed culinary events that keep the offerings fresh and exciting.

Craft Beverages and Signature Cocktails

Partner with local breweries and wineries to offer a selection of craft beers and regional wines. This supports local businesses and gives guests a chance to enjoy their favorite local flavors at your family entertainment center.

Signature Cocktails and Mocktails

Develop a line of signature cocktails and mocktails inspired by the theme of your family entertainment center or the sport of bowling itself. For instance, a cocktail named "The Perfect Strike" could be a visually striking and tasty drink in a unique glass that leads to Instagrammable moments and social sharing.

Seasonal and Themed Experiences

Your family entertainment center can maintain high yearly attendance by continuously reinventing the atmosphere and environment, ensuring repeat visitation and steady revenue.

Seasonal and pop-up experiences enhance the guest experience and serve as effective marketing tools, generating buzz and excitement for your family entertainment center.

Embrace the Seasons

In the spirit of fall, you might introduce a "Haunted Lanes" event around Halloween, where the family entertainment center is adorned with spooky decor, themed music in the background, and staff members in costumes. Additionally, themed food and drinks, such as pumpkin-spiced treats or Bloody Marys, can be offered to complement the experience.

As winter approaches, family entertainment centers can capitalize on the holiday season by decorating the lanes with festive ornaments, lights, and tinsel. Events like "Bowl with Santa" or "Midnight New Year Bowling" are perfect for drawing families looking for holiday activities. As always, it is essential to introduce unique F&B options that complement the season. Spring and summer offer the chance to host themed nights, like a pop-up tiki bar, where guests can try exotic cocktails before or after their game. Booking live bands or DJs to play lively summer tunes will enhance the guest experience and create opportunities for repeat visits.

These enhanced services and additional offerings provide diverse and rich experiences for all visitors and create multiple revenue streams for your family entertainment center. By continuously adapting, expanding, and, most importantly, promoting your offerings, you make your family entertainment center a more enjoyable and engaging place to visit and solidify its reputation as a community staple for entertainment and dining. With careful implementation and regular updates to your themes and offerings, your family entertainment center can thrive, attracting a loyal customer base eager to enjoy the experience again and again.•

BOWLING STRIKES NEW GROUND In Unconventional Venues

Bowling is popping up in unexpected places, from shopping malls to resorts, catching the eye of consumers craving a variety of fun. Businesses are catching on, adding a few lanes—whether it's the full tenpin experience or using shorter lanes and smaller balls, bowling is rolling into the entertainment scene in a big way.

These bite-sized bowling setups are igniting interest among folks who may have not thought to give it a try, or those who haven't hit the lanes in a while. As more people get a taste, it likely will drive their interest in experiencing the real deal at a full-scale bowling center or family entertainment center.

With more and more places—from apartments to clubs, gyms to bars—setting up pins, it begs the question: Are these venues rivals or allies to traditional bowling centers?

Multi-unit proprietor, and consultant, Tom Funk said it best.

“I've always believed that keeping bowling at the forefront of people's minds is crucial for business growth. Considering the amount of competition we face today, that fact is more important than ever. Advertisements and PR from TV exposure are nice but participation in the game is still the key. People have fun bowling no matter the setting or the format. The more opportunities people have to roll a few frames in different forms or settings, the more they remember how enjoyable it is. This leads to increased visits to conventional bowling centers and FECs for casual games, special events, and parties—and sometimes, it even leads to joining a league.”

Let’s talk about golf for a minute. Golf participation has increased in recent years, partly due to outside exposures. Golf simulators and social golf experiences like Top Golf and Tiger Woods' Popstroke have bolstered participation in the sport of golf. Will this translate in a similar fashion to bowling?

Recently, IBI writer Paul Lane had the opportunity to talk with Nick van der Valk from Van der Valk Gilze Hotel in Tilburg, the Netherlands. The luxury resort added a fourlane bowling facility, Spare Time Boutique Bowling and Events, in October 2023.

Nick, the owner and hotel director, researched the concept of adding bowling to their attractions. "We were looking for new possibilities for a space in the lower level of the hotel where a conference room was located. Many ideas had additional revenue potential, but we wanted something attractive for all guests, including guests not staying in the hotel. Our hotel believes in diversifying our product and giving guests more things to do on-site. It is fun for leisure guests even if they are only two people. Business groups that reserve lanes for activities such as corporate team building provide an opportunity for some relaxation in a private environment. It draws new clientele.”

Once Nick knew this was what he wanted, he started looking to see what was possible. Due to the layout of the lower level, he could not install lanes side by side. "We always want to do things differently, so we installed four private lanes," said Nick. "The goal became to provide a new experience to bowling, and we succeeded."

Spare Time Boutique Bowling and Events includes a playroom with American-style shuffleboard and an air hockey table. A comfortable lounge offers food and beverages that guests can order when reserving the lanes or on-site. Guests can also combine an hour or two of bowling with dinner in the hotel restaurant.

Reservations are required for Spare Time Boutique Bowling and Events. Hotel guests can make reservations and charge the activity to their room. Guests from the local community can make reservations online or by telephone. Nick notes, "Reservations from non-hotel guests are typically for more

people [and more bundled packages], which favorably impacts food and beverage sales."

"In addition to bowling, we have a brand-new party area ideal for exclusive party evenings," says Nick. "This room can be combined with bowling by opening a dividing wall, and we offer various packages such as bowling and drinks or bowling and dinner packages. The hall is equipped with a mega light-and-sound show. We individually tailor events like work-related drinks, family reunions, a company getaway, or a wedding," added Nick.

The Van der Valk Gilze Hotel in Tilburg was opened in 1974 by Nick's father (who was just 17 years old), and Nick became the managing director in 2012. He officially became the owner, together with his brothers and sisters, in 2021. The Gilze Hotel is part of a Van der Valk family franchise and is one of 140 hotels worldwide, of which approximately 80 are in the Netherlands. With very few exceptions, the hotels are all run by family members, making the Van der Valk hotels a family business. In over one hundred years, one thing has never changed: visiting a Van der Valk hotel feels like coming home.

Spare Time Boutique Bowling and Events features QubicaAMF Edge String machines, BES X scoring, and entertainment systems on all four lanes. Hyperbowling is on one of the VIP lanes, providing an even more dynamic experience. Bowltech Europe, QubicaAMF's distributor based in the Netherlands, did the installation.

Bowling's venture into new and unique spaces is a gamechanger for traditional bowling businesses. This exposure to bowling in casual, everyday environments is creating a buzz, attracting new fans who are likely to seek out the full experience at their local alleys. It's a win-win: unconventional lanes bring bowling to the public eye and funnel fresh crowds to established centers, promising growth and new energy in the industry.•

Paul Lane has had an extensive background in marketing since 1960, especially in the international arena, in a career that spans more than 50 countries. This includes a 30-year tenure with AMF Bowling Inc. (1960-1990). Since 1990 he has worked as an independent contractor assisting more than a dozen major domestic and international companies in the bowling industry in a variety of marketing assignments.

"THANK YOU"

The Power Of Gratitude For Your Business

with Steve Cieslewicz

When someone says "Thank you," what do those words truly mean? The phrase is so commonly used that it can sometimes lose its impact. These moments are fleeting, from the routine thanks for passing the salt to the polite response to a sneeze. But in the rush of daily life, especially in business, the depth of gratitude these words are meant to carry can often be overlooked.

As a business owner, I strongly believe in the value of a sincere thank you. While many business seminars focus on reducing expenses or improving efficiency, they seldom advise us to restrain our expressions of gratitude. However, expressing thanks should always feel genuine, especially in interactions with customers and employees.

Take, for instance, running into an acquaintance you haven't seen in weeks. The usual exchange—"How's it going?" met with "Oh, we're so busy"—is standard. But consider the potential impact of pausing to express genuine thanks. For example, to a regular customer like Larry who brings his family to your center twice a week, a simple acknowledgment, like, "Hey Larry, thanks so much for all your support, it means a lot to us," might be the nudge that makes Larry even more loyal to your business.

But who else deserves our thanks?

Beyond the Usual Suspects

And what about those service providers you only think about when there's an issue? The HVAC contractor, the plumber, or even the local business owner you contact only for event donations. They, too, deserve thanks not just for solving problems but for their ongoing reliability.

A story I once heard about a CEO of a major airline has always stuck with me. In the 1970s, he randomly selected five people from his Rolodex weekly to say hi or thank you. This gesture kept his connections strong and personal, showing appreciation beyond business needs.

Times have changed, and so has the Rolodex. Now, when I find myself on a long drive alone, I scroll through my phone contacts (hands-free, of course!) and reconnect with people I haven't spoken to in a while. This ongoing communication is crucial, ensuring that these contacts never feel like our interactions are solely transactional.

If you're still with me in this article, I want to extend a heartfelt thank you. Your attention and support mean the world, especially as I navigate this writing journey. By nurturing our business relationships with frequent, genuine expressions of gratitude, we build a network and a community of mutual respect and loyalty.

Our employees, often seen as just another part of the business machine, are fundamental to our success. In our center, with a rotating staff of about 32, I make it a point to personally thank a few team members weekly. This small gesture takes only a minute but can significantly boost morale and loyalty. Every few months, each employee has received a personal thank you, reminding them of their value to our organization.

Valued Partners: Our Vendors

Then there are our vendors, who are sometimes taken for granted with the mindset that they work for us. However, this perspective misses the mark. Our vendors are partners; their service and products are vital to our operations. I recently told a vendor's supervisor about the exceptional service we've received from a delivery driver who's been with us for over 20 years. This rare dedication deserved recognition, not just when there's a problem to report. The supervisor was so appreciative of the positive feedback that he even treated me to lunch.

So next time you toss out a thank you, maybe linger a moment longer—it's not just good manners, it's good business. And who knows? That extra thank-you might just be your ticket to becoming everyone's favorite person to hear from. Let's make thank you mean something significant again.•

CAPTIVATING EXPERIENCES Creating

Grand Entrances, Sensory Immersion, and Social Media Buzz

Every proprietor shares this business goal: give customers the best experience possible. And while many often think of that in terms of customer service, it's just as important to appeal to a guest's emotions.

"You want to make sure that a customer is not only treated great but also feels great when they come into your center," said Doug Wilkerson, co-owner of Dynamic Designs, a firm that has been designing family entertainment centers for over 40 years. Is that an easy task? In a sense, yes.

Wilkerson pointed to three ways you can use your design to create the right atmosphere that will make people love your center and draw them back time and again:

Greet customers with a grand entrance.

Have a specific goal in mind when creating the right mood. Make your facility photo-worthy.

Make a Grand Entrance:

Where Unforgettable Journeys Begin

Within mere seconds of stepping through your doors, guests form an indelible perception of your venue – a perception that can make or break their overall experience. Take a cue from the hospitality industry's heavyweights, where hotels, theme parks, and restaurants prioritize warm and inviting lobbies that set the tone for the adventure ahead. "You want your guests to know that when they walk through your doors, they're entering a great place, and they're about to have a great experience," Wilkerson emphasizes.

Craft an entrance area that commands attention and ignites anticipation, whether it's a striking centerpiece sculpture, a captivating video wall, or immersive architectural features that transport guests into your unique world. This initial impression lays the foundation for the emotional journey you're about to take them on, priming their senses and whetting their appetites for what's to come.

Engage the Senses: An All-Encompassing Immersion

Sustaining the mood you've created when guests arrive is crucial to delivering a truly unforgettable experience. Wilkerson advises engaging all five senses to immerse your customers fully in your center's ambiance. "What you see, feel, touch, hear, and even smell creates an all-encompassing experience," he explains.

Cohesive design, seamlessly guiding guests from one profit center to another, is the cornerstone of this multi-sensory approach. Incorporate intimate spaces that foster a sense of ownership and comfort, complemented by transitional areas where guests can relax and anticipate their next adventure. Thoughtful touches like mood-setting music, interactive kiosks that delight the senses, and even strategic scents that evoke emotions can elevate the ordinary into the extraordinary.

Social Media-Worthy Moments: Igniting Viral Buzz

Whether you like it or not, we live in a world dominated by social media. People always have a camera on them and love to show where they are and how much fun they're having. That

lends itself perfectly to fun and quirky designs in your center. "There are so many ways you can spruce up your center to create perfect Instagram or TikTok moments," Wilkerson said.

For instance, you can install photo stops, such as one recently designed for one of Wilkerson's centers. "The design called for a life-size smartphone being held by a gigantic hand, and the customer can go inside it and 'become' the photo on the phone," Wilkerson said. "It's a unique experience that people want to share on social media."

Other “Dynamic” centers have turned standard billiards tables into cars, utilize huge round booths that stand out on social media, and even have swings hanging down from the ceiling for people to use."If you have a normal billiards table, only those who love the game will play," Wilkerson said. "But if you repackage it as a car or something else, it becomes unique and makes a memory for your guests." They then share their photos on social media, potentially drawing people from outside your center in as future guests.

In our digital age, where social media reigns supreme, creating shareable, Instagrammable moments is a powerful marketing tool that can amplify your center's reach and appeal.

Each shared moment becomes a powerful endorsement, potentially drawing in new visitors eager to create unforgettable experiences.

While updates may require investment, Wilkerson reassures that many design changes are cost-effective and impactful. "If you make them, you'll be amazed at the results you'll see," he promises, citing examples of centers that have seen a significant uptick in social media engagement and foot traffic after implementing these strategies.

In a world where experiences reign supreme, leveraging design to tap into your guests' emotions can set your family entertainment center apart from the competition. By creating a grand entrance that sets the stage, engaging the senses for an all-encompassing immersion, and fostering social mediaworthy moments, you'll cultivate an atmosphere that keeps guests coming back for more, time and time again.

Wilkerson concludes, "Emotional design is about creating lasting memories and connections. When you can tap into those deep-seated emotions, you've won a guest for today and potentially a lifetime of loyalty and advocacy."•

Daniel Ellman has spent most of his life in family entertainment centers, following around his father, Howard Ellman, as he redesigned facilities in his role as owner of Dynamic Designs. And that’s where our in-house creative team shines. It all starts with a free custom plan-o-gram and a strategy for every wall, shelf, bin, and crane in your redemption center. We get to know your brand and business inside and out, in order to focus on crafting the right flow, function, and aesthetic. The result? A retail look and feel that your guests will come back to over and over again. Top trending merch that’s always in stock will fuel your sales and make redemption feel easy. We’ve even got you covered all the way through set-up, installation, POS system integration, staff training, and ongoing account management. And did we mention that it’s free, too?

Welcome your guests in style with our free design and on-site services. Call 1-800-272-6375 or email design@bmimerchandise.com to get started.

ICE Games Quarterback

Pro is ICE’s new football game. The game can be utilized as a single game or two units with a mega marquee. Footballs will dispense from the built-in conveyer belt and players will skillfully throw footballs at 6 pop out targets trying to correctly time and complete passes to score touchdowns. There are three different game modes built into game play. Once a player tallies up a hundred yards, they are awarded a touchdown. At the end of the game each player will receive a quarterback rating based on their accuracy, yardage, and touchdowns thrown. If a player happens to end up with a top 5 score their initials will be displayed on the game’s leaderboard. This game is in production, and lead times are around 3 weeks.

Intercard SCAN AND SAVE WITH INTERCARD’S IQ READERS AND KIOSKS

At Bowl Expo 2024

“With the iQ series, customers can purchase or recharge game play and use a mobile device or paper receipt with QR code to play games, collect points and even redeem prizes,” says Scott Sherrod, CEO of Intercard, “all without the help of a center employee. It’s a big step into the future.” More info at www.intercardinc.com/products 922

Intercard will introduce its iQ readers and kiosks that read the popular QR codes, setting the new standard for bowling center payment technology. iQ devices use built-in scanners to accept QR codes for payment and redemption point collection. This will enable customers to use mobile devices or paper instead of play cards to activate games, reducing costs for bowling operators and owners of unattended arcades.

Stern Pinball

In Stern’s John Wick pinball games, players step into the role of the world’s greatest assassin as he fights to escape his past. As the titular character, players can engage in high-speed car chases and fast-action drifting across the playfield, which incorporates models and artwork inspired by iconic locations from the franchise, including the New York Continental Hotel and the Red Circle Club, all set against a dramatically edge lit New York City skyline. Players can also open John Wick’s weapons crate to reveal a hidden shot target path to retrieve an array of weapons. Players must use the sculpted Blood Oath Marker carefully – or risk the consequences. Players need to survive other assassins, complete jobs for the legendary Factions of the High Table, and eventually take on John Wick’s “Special Assignment!”

IRRESISTIBLE BAR BITES

Spicing Up the Bar Scene with Tasty Eats

Today’s bars and bowling centers are quickly becoming the go-to spots not just for a round of drinks but for a killer meal, too. Forget the days of sipping a beer with nothing but peanuts on the side— now, it’s all about diving into a full-flavored adventure that brings food and fun together.

In Santa Fe, The Alley isn’t just a bowling center; it’s a culinary destination with upscale, inventive dishes that draw both locals and tourists. Focusing on quality ingredients and unique recipes, such as the patatas with spicy garlic sriracha or the fried avocado topped with tangy lime yogurt sauce, transforms a casual bowling visit into a gourmet experience. Including games like bocce and arcade machines, paired with a robust food menu, ensures that The Alley is seen as much more than just a place to bowl; it is a place to dine and unwind.

Take The Hotel Roosevelt in Hollywood, for instance, where The Spare Room mixes suave sips with high-stakes games, all wrapped up in a luxe vibe. It is the kind of place that turns “just one drink” into an unforgettable night out.

NEW VENTURES ACROSS THE U.S.

As the nightlife landscape shifts, bars and bowling centers across the United States are stepping up their game by weaving exquisite dining into their entertainment offerings.

FLORIDA

Chicago-born Pinstripes has opened a new location in Orlando. In 40,000 square feet, there is an Italian bistro, bocce, the signature activity, and lots of food and games.

Colonial Lanes, also in Orlando, is rebranding to Primrose Lanes and refreshing its center with a new glamorous interior. The hot dogs and grilled cheese food offerings are supplanted with upscale entrees.

Miami is welcoming Bowlero Corp.’s Lucky Strike Miami. It is the second new build using the Lucky Strike brand since it was acquired last September 2023. It is located in the heart of downtown Miami within Miami Worldcenter, a 27-acre $6 billion mixed-use destination.

Then there’s San Francisco’s Presidio Bowl, where the menu is as extensive as the lanes are long. From Cuban roasted pork to gourmet burgers and a dizzying array of drinks, this spot caters to everyone, whether you are rolling strikes or toasting a special occasion.

MICHIGAN

Kalamazoo is the new home of Crafted Copper cocktail lounge. It will introduce duckpin bowling and a “pour-your-own” draft beer wall, in which patrons will pay for beer by the ounce. This new location is in the heart of the city, with the hope of revitalizing the town sector.

TEXAS

One stop shopping entertainment: Hollywood Theaters in Longview will soon be reborn as Film Alley Longview. The entertainment destination will combine a theater, duckpin bowling lanes, a restaurant, axe throwing, and an arcade. While there are 14 theaters in the building, refurbishing will bring it down to 10. Owner Schulman Theaters has opened four other Film Alley concepts in Texas.

WISCONSIN

An unused warehouse along Rock River in downtown Beloit, will become Henry Dorrbaker’s, named for Beloit’s first bowling alley owner. It will include two bars, live band performances, duckpin bowling, mini-golf, and an arcade. Completion is scheduled for the end of 2024.

Innovative Alternatives: A New Frontier for Bars

perating a successful bar often boils down to catching the right trends at the right time. From craft beer to trivia nights and specialty mocktails to kegged mixed drinks, jumping on these popular movements has brought a lot of bars more customers and bigger sales. The trick is staying one step ahead of the competition and making your mark.

TREND ALERT!

Alcohol alternatives are on the rise.

THC- and CBD-infused products are catching on with consumers of all ages, especially the Gen Z crowd. The draw to a boozefree or low-alcohol lifestyle has been increasing as healthier alternatives to alcohol have become more mainstream. Seeking more elaborate experiences from entertainment venues, patrons are turning their attention to THC with a bit of TLC.

To learn more, I caught up with Nick Zavakos, co-owner of Know Naturals, a leading supplier of hemp-based products. What does hemp-based mean, and are these products a type of marijuana? Zavakos quickly responded, “They are not marijuana! Because these are naturally derived from hemp, they provide a lighter buzz compared to recreational cannabis edibles. Moreover, our products have been developed to metabolize quickly, unlike traditional marijuana and hemp edibles.”

Plus, with a fast and predictable onset and offset of their effects, Know Natural edibles ensure a safe and predictable experience without the fear of over-consumption. Zavakos says, “Once eaten, the effects take approximately 15-30 minutes to kick in, with a light euphoric buzz lasting for approximately 90-120 minutes.”

What do bar owners need to know, and how can they safely offer these products to their 21 and over crowd? I had many questions; luckily, Nick had the answers.

LEGAL AND POPULAR!

You might ask yourself, “Am I allowed to sell these?” Much like CBD, hemp-derived THC is legal nationally but also subject to state and local regulations. The majority of states fully allow the sale of Delta-9 THC products, with a few additional states allowing sales with a few restrictions. Navigating these rules is the first thing that Know Naturals offers to potential resale partners, with knowledgeable staff to walk interested proprietors through the process.

PROFITABLE MARGINS

Speaking of your bottom line, adding this new revenue stream is an exciting, different way to deliver a safe and enjoyable intoxicant to your bar scene that’s both legal and in high demand. Many bar owners across the country have reported more than a third of their bar sales coming from

THC-infused products as markets continue to expand. “You can expect profitability and margins comparable to or better than alcohol sales while opening the doors to an entirely new revenue stream to capture,” said Zavakos.

Those sales results align with similarly burgeoning nontraditional bar trends, like non-alcoholic beers, mocktails, and CBD infusions that are increasingly attractive to younger crowds. Know Naturals is also developing a line of one-ounce hemp-infused spirit shots that perfectly fit bar culture.

STRICTLY 21+, JUST LIKE ALCOHOL

Anyone concerned about making sure this would fit the familyfriendly atmosphere of their center should know that these products are age-restricted to individuals 21 and older and require proof of valid identification for sale, just like beer and liquor. They’re individually packaged and barcoded, making managing inventory and tracking sales easy while ensuring high legal compliance and fostering consumer safety.

Bars that want to introduce Know Naturals to their customers can begin with a starter package for around $500 that includes:

• 200 individually wrapped 10mg Bliss Gummies (a $1,000 retail value)

• Point-of-sale material, including pins, stickers, QR codes, and other bar advertising

• Access to a wholesale portal, which features order placement, tracking, and compliance details

• Training videos to help educate your staff and hear testimonials from other proprietors

• Free consultations to help streamline your process and revamp your bar scene

As the bar industry evolves, savvy owners looking to cater to health-conscious and experience-seeking customers can find significant opportunities in THC- and CBD-infused offerings. With products like Know Naturals, your bar can enhance its menus with safe and legal alternatives that promise new

experiences and potentially lucrative returns. And speaking of menus, you may want to consider expanding your food offerings. Introducing an expanded bar bite menu could drive additional sales from munchie-related surges.

There’s a lot more to come as Know Naturals continues to grow its line of gummy formulas and hemp-based cocktails. If you’re interested and want to learn more about this exciting trend, visit their website at KnowNaturals.com or call for a free consultation at 843-475-5604.•

WE HAVE KNOW ANSWERS!

What does hemp do?

This THC edible gives users a light, euphoric buzz for approximately 90-120 minutes. Is this marijuana?

No! Delta 9 edibles are derived from hemp, not cannabis. Are there any side effects?

Only if you count boosted food sales due to the munchies. Is it legal?

Thanks to the 2018 Farm Act, yes, Delta-9 THC is legal for sale. Much like CBD, hemp-derived THC is legal nationally but also subject to state and local regulations. Call the Know Naturals team at 843-475-5604 or visit KnowNaturals.com to learn about your area.

Is it safe?

Know Naturals edibles promote an uplifting and social bar atmosphere without the adverse side effects of alcohol. Moreover, their products are individually packaged and contain essential consumer safety information.

Unleash the Marketing Power of

COASTERS

AHow Coasters Can Drive Loyalty, Revenue, and Brand Exposure

re you looking for new ways to engage with your customers? Consider the oftenunderestimated power of the humble coaster. Sitting discretely under drinks, coasters are a prime yet subtle medium for effective advertising right at your establishment. With customers spending an average of 45 minutes per visit, coasters offer a unique, prolonged interaction with your messaging.

Integrate with Ease and Keep It Interactive

Coasters blend seamlessly into the dining or bar setting or on the lanes and become a natural part of your customer’s experience. Because people often fiddle with or look at coasters while they dine or drink, this provides a perfect opportunity to catch their eye with attractive designs and compelling offers. Whether it’s suggesting a new drink or a high-margin menu item, coasters can be your silent salespeople.

Strategic Advertising for Targeted Impact

Effective advertising is all about timing and placement. With coasters, you reach your customers when they’re engaged and open to suggestions.

PUTTING COASTERS TO WORK FOR YOU

Promotional Powerhouses:

If your center offers multiple attractions like bowling, arcades, added attractions, or food and beverage options, coasters can be your ultimate promotional tools. Utilize both sides to highlight your diverse offerings, enticing customers to explore and experience everything you have to offer.

Party Room Ambassadors:

Coasters can serve as welcoming ambassadors for first-time visitors attending a party at your establishment. Use them to educate guests about your facility’s offerings, perhaps with a compelling free game offer to encourage them to return and explore further.

Fresh News: Coasters are the perfect platform to spread the word if your center is gearing up to launch a new attraction or promotion.

Coupon Craze: Families are always looking for ways to save while enjoying quality entertainment. Leverage coasters as coupon carriers, offering discounts or special

deals to entice customers back. Whether it’s a free shoe rental, extra arcade points, a buy-one-getone game offer, or a food credit, coaster coupons can drive traffic to your high-margin areas and boost revenue streams.

Review Boosters: Positive online reviews are invaluable for any business. Leverage coasters to encourage customers to share their experiences, photos, and feedback on your website or social media platforms. Include a QR code for easy access, and use the valuable insights to celebrate your successes while identifying areas for improvement.

Coaster Loyalty Program: Transform coasters into loyalty cards by incorporating your logo and branding. Offer enticing rewards after a certain number of visits, such as a free game after every five games purchased or a lane rental credit after ten rentals. This simple gesture not only incentivizes repeat business but also fosters customer loyalty.

Bar Talk
Amusement Alley June 2024 10

Use data from your customer database to tailor the messages on your coasters, promoting specials like “Wednesday Wings” or new menu additions that might intrigue your guests. This strategic placement can help smooth out weekly traffic flows and introduce new offerings in a non-intrusive way.

Boosting Brand Exposure and Loyalty

Coasters don’t just have to be functional; they can also be a continuous reminder of your brand. Every time customers lift their drink, they interact with your logo or message. This repeated exposure helps build brand recognition and loyalty, reinforcing your presence in a competitive market.

Creative Design and Practical Function

When it comes to coaster design, the sky’s the limit. Use vibrant colors, engaging slogans, or humorous messages to capture attention. Incorporating technology, like QR codes, can turn a simple coaster into a gateway to your online content, promotions, or event bookings. Not only do these designs entertain, they also serve the practical purpose of protecting surfaces, thus prolonging the life of your furniture and reducing maintenance costs.

Cost-Effective and Eco-Friendly Marketing

Implementing coasters in your marketing strategy is both affordable and sustainable. These small but mighty tools are an economical way to extend your brand reach without breaking

the bank. Modern printing techniques make coasters recyclable and printed with non-toxic, vegetablebased inks, appealing to environmentally-conscious consumers.

From loyalty programs to directing customers to try all your facility offers, coasters can do much more than just hold drinks. Plus, since every coaster has two sides, you have double the opportunity to communicate with your patrons.

The possibilities are truly endless when it comes to leveraging coasters as multifaceted marketing tools. Embrace their potential and watch as they transform into powerful drivers of customer engagement, loyalty, and revenue growth for your business.

REVAMP REVITALIZE &

Simple Changes to Boost Your Bar’s

Atmosphere

Setting the stage for a thriving bar atmosphere can attract new customers and keep others returning more often. How can you enhance your center’s watering hole’s ambiance without shelling out a lot of cash?

REARRANGE THE LAYOUT

Believe it or not, a simple furniture rearrangement can dramatically refresh your bar’s look and feel. Adjusting the layout to create intimate spaces or more dynamic social areas can significantly improve comfort and encourage interaction among patrons. Unique seating arrangements like communal tables, statement furniture pieces, and snug nooks that invite guests to settle in and relax are all the rage.

SPRUCE UP THE BACK BAR

A fresh take on your back bar can transform the entire atmosphere of your venue. Consider new artwork, an updated display case, or innovative lighting fixtures. Sometimes, even thoroughly cleaning and reorganizing bottles can significantly brighten the space.

A FRESH COAT OF PAINT

Never underestimate the power of paint. Give your walls, ceiling, doors, and even the bar itself a new coat of paint or wood stain. If a complete overhaul isn’t on your radar, simply touching up worn areas or adding a statement wall behind the bar can make a big impact.

ENHANCE YOUR AUDIO-VISUAL EXPERIENCE

Modernize your bar with an upgraded audio-visual system. LED lighting that changes colors and intensity can instantly alter the mood and vibe according to the time of day or the beat of the music. Consider investing in programmable lights that sync with the music to create an energetic atmosphere during peak hours. Plus, the right music and lighting are essential for hosting popular themed nights and other profitable events in the bar.

GET FESTIVE AND BOOST YOUR BAR’S HOLIDAY SPIRIT

Dressing up your bar with eyecatching holiday decor attracts more customers and keeps them celebrating longer under your roof. In the era of Instagram and Facebook, stunning, thematic decorations often become the backdrop of social media shares, providing free promotion for your establishment. For a master class in holiday decorations, take a cue from Ohio’s Rollhouse Entertainment chain, celebrated for their exceptional approach. For inspiration, check out IBI’s recent March issue which highlights their successful food and beverage operations.•
