FROM THE PRESIDENT Pat Buller

Forum postponed In the previous edition of Jack Hi I offered club administrations the opportunity to raise possible agenda items with the board for a December Presidents’ Forum. As at 31 October, the closing date for “submissions” only two clubs had offered items they considered worthy of further discussion. Given these were relatively simple operational matters they were able to be responded to without the need to host a Forum, which offers two possibilities. Firstly things in Bowls WA are travelling so well that there are no longer term issues considered to be of concern to clubs, or clubs did not take up the opportunity to air possible further improvements in the game or alternatively issues of concern. Being a positive fellow I would like to believe the former, however I have been around clubs long enough to know there are always issues for administrations such as ours to consider for the betterment of the clubs and the game. The next Forum is scheduled for post season and I encourage clubs to consider items of general importance they may wish discussed.

A good start but beware! Having said that the season as the CEO suggests in his report, has started very well. The weather has been kind and the many changes introduced last season have been better understood given the time elapsed. However the hot weather is not far away and we encourage umpires to ensure they are up to speed with the Extreme Weather policy and the proper use and placement of the club thermometer. The excuse of “I wasn’t aware of that” will receive little support following opposition protest !

Australian Premier League (APL) Much has been said about the formation of a “made for television” concept to be called the Australian Premier League. The Bowls

Australia concept has been to offer “team franchises” initially to the states and territory associations and then to clubs and suppliers to form teams in an up beat form of the game, which in turn will be sold to commercial television. When offered the New Zealand Black Jacks also snapped up a franchise to offer a further international flavor to the competition. Bowls WA has taken up the offer of the WA franchise for the next three years which will feature: • Six teams of three players and a coach, with only two players playing at any one time, • The team will include an international player chosen from a list compiled by APL, • Two bowl pairs format, with each set being of a maximum of five ends, • Player substitutions called by the coach as required, • The use of a “shot clock” in play. With a prize pool of not less than $100,000 on offer, this concept will be eagerly awaited by all as a promotional replacement of the previous ABC coverage. Already Fox Sports are committed to the coverage. Matches and filming are due to take place in February, with negotiations continuing with possible Eastern States host clubs.

Numbers up for state events Finally it is pleasing to have seen the increased numbers for the men’s and women’s state fours events. Although a long way short of the record numbers two decades ago, they have turned for the better and we trust other events this summer will be as well supported, including our biggest event of the year – Country Week. My best wishes for you and your families for the Christmas and New Year break.

Skinner the new Bowls Australia President The board of Bowls Australia has elected Des Skinner (Newcastle, NSW) as President of the national body at a recent board meeting held in Melbourne. He replaces outgoing President Joe Aarons, who was recently elected President of World Bowls, therefore vacating office at Bowls Australia. Skinner, who has extensive bowls administrative experience at both state, zone and club level, has been a member of the Bowls Australia board since 2007, and will assume the new role effective immediately. Aarons’ ascendency to the position of President of World Bowls created a casual vacancy on the board and that has been filled by Commonwealth Games medallist and 1999 NSW Bowler of the Year, Brett Duprez, following the board meeting. The election of Duprez to the board of Bowls Australia will take effect from the

FROM THE CEO Ken Pride

At the time of writing metropolitan pennant had negotiated the double-header with a difference and was marching towards the half way mark of the pennant season. To date most fixtures had progressed smoothly, with the bonus of generally good climactic conditions to play in, a far cry from this time 12 months ago ! There does remain a wish, particularly in the lower grades, to remove the double-header at all costs, but in framing the fixtures the trade off is not that easy. For the double-header to be removed (and of course it depends on where Easter falls each year) one of the following would need to occur: • Commence the season in mid October, which would no doubt cause issues with under prepared grass greens and the conduct of various Association events, • Return almost immediately after New Year, when many bowlers are still on an extended break, • Play a week longer, which may mean coming back to bowls after Easter, but would almost certainly ensure a direct clash with winter sport – most notably the AFL. The playing of a Sunday fixture for the Tuesday ladies pennant competition was strongly supported by the ladies representatives at the Ladies Forum in May as it enabled the annoying breaks which surrounded Country Week to be removed. The finals will now be played in the week break between Country Week’s ensuring an early finish to the season, rather than the previously drawn out process. Generally both these outcomes are supported by the majority, with no more forfeits occurring on the Sunday than any other normal Saturday – of course each year is different and no doubt the Fixtures & Events Committee will take all issues into account for season 2012/2013.

ensure their pennant players are attired correctly in order to maintain the standards the game is renowned for. If in doubt check the Attire Policy on the Bowls WA website.

Transfer window Members who for whatever reason are seeking to change clubs need to remember the transfer window effectively closes on the 31st December. If you are looking for a late change of club please ensure you follow the requirements on page 36 of the Fixture Book.

Welcome to our new CDO And speaking of CDO’s a welcome to our new Bowls Australia Community Development Officer in Daniel Woodrow. Daniel will commence on 10th December and has a great bowls background having been the Club Manager at the Fitzroy Victoria Bowling & Sports Club for over three years. In addition Daniel is the current Captain / Coach of Premier League side Essendon BC and been a representative player in the Victorian Under 25s. BUT before any recruiting officer’s start to get excited, Daniel will complete the pennant season with Essendon, by flying back to Melbourne each weekend – now that is commitment ! For all bowlers enjoy the Christmas and New Year break and come back refreshed to complete the balance of the pennant season and for those looking to enter state events, the best of luck.

Maintaining standards I have received many comments in recent weeks, including formal club letters, about the falling standards of dress during pennant. And I have to agree wholeheartedly. It has been reported many times before, but bowls has always sought to maintain appropriate standards, in both behavior/etiquette on the green but also in how we are attired. It is one of the small things that sets the sport apart from many others. Yes it does cost a little more to ensure our clothing is purchased from a Bowls Australia accredited supplier, but those funds which amount to approximately $750,000 nationally, are used to fund the Community Development Officer (CDO) program, which in itself is at the club’s disposal to assist in growing membership, governance issues and assisting clubs generally with their operational activities. Sorry but as good as they may look after the game, white denim skirts/jeans, Dockers, Eagles or Quiksilver caps or the white penguin t-shirt are not acceptable and I ask all club president’s and captain’s to

On behalf of all the staff from Bowls World we wish you all a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. Gift Vouchers and gift ideas available. Phone and mail orders welcome.

MEMBERSHIP & PARTICIPATION With summer and the pennant season well under way, we are all focused on doing our best to put some good bowls down to help secure our club’s end of season success, with hopefully a pennant or two! Summer also gives us a wonderful opportunity to introduce friends and associates to an activity that is perfect for enjoying on late afternoons and in the cool of the evening. Why not invite your family, friends or neighbors to join you in spending a little time at the club? We all know how great it is to get on the green at this time of the year. It also gives “time-poor” working Mums and Dads a chance to relax and learn a new skill while enjoying the company of others for an hour or two. A bowling green is the perfect place for parents with holidaying teenage school children who find “holidays are boring and there’s nothing to do”! Together with giving your guests a lot of summer fun, it is the perfect season to show how easy it is to play the game and how welcome they would be as regular social or even future pennant players. Recruitment figures of people joining the sport indicate that many new players enjoyed their first experiences of the challenges and successes of the game as either social or corporate bowlers. There are some great success stories of clubs increasing membership through people discovering the sport after participating in some of the many social initiatives conducted by most clubs. Contact your club to see what social events it has on its calendar for you and your friends. Or put together your own social or work colleagues gathering. Take this opportunity to do your bit to help your sport grow and prosper. Introduce your friends to the game. You will get as much fun out of helping them discover the game as they will in enjoying it!

Apia Cool Jack competition closing soon! Your club has until 8 January for the chance to win eight fully installed Cool Jack cold foods and drink storage units. Specially designed for bowling greens and valued at $4800. Clubs have competition entry details or visit the Bowls WA website at www.bowlswa.com.au for more information on how your club can win this great Apia promotion (see page 27).

FROM THE UMPIRES

WA W A B wls News

Michael Goble-Garratt

Country Leagues should be aware that they are the ‘Controlling Bodies’ for their League and should certainly set out the conditions of play for Pennants. Bowls WA publishes a Handbook and a Fixtures Handbook for Metro Pennants, which contains comprehensive Conditions of Play covering all BWA events including championships and pennants. The Handbook contains ‘Field of Play Rules’ for BWA events and ‘General Conditions of Play’ and the Fixtures book contains the same plus specific additional conditions pertaining to the Men’s and Ladies various Pennant structures for the season. The Metropolitan Pennant Competition General Conditions for 2012 -2013, in the preamble on page 36 of the Fixtures Handbook states “Conditions of Play for Country Pennant Competitions are determined by the Country Leagues and where possible should be, consistent with the Metropolitan Pennant Competition General Conditions.” These two handbooks are easily downloaded from BWA website or any one requiring a copy can request one from Head office in Osborne Park.

A recent description of an incident has prompted me to remind bowlers and, particularly, Umpires of the need to be aware of the Laws covering the displacement of bowls or jack by players, neutral objects, measurers and umpires, and the remedy in each case. The incident quoted was one of a skip having decided to declare the end without playing his last bowl, then rolled his bowl down and the players in the head did not notice it and it disturbed the head! The ruling given was that the skips (or thirds as their delegated players controlling the head) should agree how the head should be replaced or else declare the end dead! Clearly this decision is incorrect and, the Laws covering displacement of bowls and/or jack cover this particular incident. One law states that the bowl/s not to be played requiring to be transferred to the other end, should be carried up the rink NOT rolled if the end is complete, so the skip erred on that count; and having not carried the bowl he (albeit inadvertently) disturbed the head, so the opposing skip or, obviously, his delegated player at the head should replace the head ~ the guiding principle of “you offend – I amend” clearly applies. The definition “Law 1.3.4 Displaced jack or bowl: a jack or a bowl which is moved in a way that is not approved within the Laws of the Sport of Bowls.” arguably applies in-so-far as the transference of the bowl by the skip in the manner described is certainly NOT ‘approved’. The unplayed bowl is still part of a player on the rink and therefore not a neutral object regardless if the skip has stated to declare the head. And in this case, Law 28.1.4.1 Displacement of a bowl at rest and Law 33.1.3 Displacement of a jack at rest (if the jack is also disturbed) are the relevant laws to use to correct the situation. The opposition skip (or his delegate, in the person playing Third) has the obligation to return the head to its original position and there can be NO dissension from the offending team members. There is an excellent tabulation of the circumstances and respective remedies in Appendix C commencing on page 98 of the Crystal mark Laws of the sport of bowls to assist anyone to reach the correct outcome when head/bowl/jack displacement has occurred. How often do we witness an end declared dead and the bowls being thrown down the rink for the replay? Law 31.2 A dead end should be replayed in the same direction unless the skips or opponents in Singles agree to play it in the opposite direction. (If the jack and bowls need to be transferred to the opposite end of the rink before the end is replayed, they should be carried up the rink to avoid distracting players on neighbouring rinks.) A sadder indictment is when a player who, when this law is pointed out to him, states he thinks this (or any other rule) is an irrelevant and stupid law! This committee hears occasional outcries of umpire integrity being brought against the Umpire-of-The-Day when in the current Pennant play structure, the home club has to supply this official, who is in most cases, also a player for the home club. I would remind all Umpires and players that the playing Umpire is an unbiased official when called to adjudicate on a measure or law, and has signed a declaration to that effect when he/she accredits or re-accredits. Once called upon by any team, that team should stand back from the Official while in the act of performing his duties. Serious consequences exist for both - teams that interfere with the Umpire or for any Umpire who does NOT adhere to the tenets of the Code of Ethics declaration he/she signed. mediatonic.com.au

FROM THE COUNTRY DIRECTOR Kerry Andersen

The pennant season will be well under way as this publication goes to print. New facilities at Jurien Bay, York and Kellerberrin have recently been opened and I am sure members of those clubs are enjoying their new centres and synthetic surfaces. With the approval of the Country Committee and after following the appropriate Guidelines, the Shackleton Bowling Club has successfully transferred from the South Eastern Bowling League to the East Avon Bowling League. It has been an amicable transition, with both Leagues agreeing to redraw pennant fixtures for the coming season. I wish both Leagues success for the forthcoming season. The men’s and women’s Inter League Round Robins will be held late in November (women) and in January (men) at various venues around the State and I take this opportunity to wish all selected players good luck, good bowling and of course may all enjoy the great comradeship which prevails at these events. Country Week nomination forms have been sent to the clubs, and I urge you to enter a team in this great event. Entries for Men’s Country Week close on December 19, and entries for Women’s Country Week close on January 16, 2013. Composite teams need to be approved by the Country Committee, and nomination forms are available on request from the BWA office. Daniel Woodrow has been appointed the Community Development Officer (WA). Daniel has held previous roles as Club and Bowls Development Manager at the Fitzroy-Victoria Bowling Club and is

currently Captain/ Coach at the Essendon Bowling Club. Daniel is expected to assume duties in mid December and we look forward to meeting Daniel as he visits regional areas. There has been a poor response to the Synthetic Greens Survey. BWA is hoping to compile a Synthetic Greens Data Base, with the express purpose of having detailed information available to clubs wishing to access it. As there are so many of these surfaces now in regional areas, I urge your club to complete the Survey and return it to the BWA office as soon as possible. Christmas is looming, and I take this opportunity to wish you all a safe and happy Christmas and New Year. Enjoy the festive season and for those on the land, may your harvest be bountiful.

Carnival Fours Hat-trick for Hastings Therese Hastings has captured a unique treble of wins in the Bowls WA Women’s Carnival Fours which was completed at Mt Pleasant Bowling Club on Thursday 18th October. The Carnival Fours requires teams to be made up on a points system based on a player’s current pennant status, which allows up to two 1st division players who can team up with lower division players. This format encourages newer bowlers to get a taste of stronger competition and improve their skills and knowledge of the game. Each year Therese has played with a slightly different line-up and to win the competition three years in a row is a terrific effort. Her Manning side of Helen Heal, Amanda Ladlow and Toni Gatti getting home in a very close final winning 19-14. Up against Shari Solly’s team of Brooke Newstead, Danielle Youard and Kim Simms scores were locked at 13 all with just three ends remaining in what was a very high quality final. Solly’s side picked up a one to lead with just two ends remaining, Hastings team however proved the better in the last two ends to take the title. In the semi finals Hastings defeated Judy Stein’s side from Mundaring whilst Solly defeated Liz Brooke’s team from Manning.

With Australian Head Coach …. Steve Glasson

World Bowls Preview May I begin by saying I’m delighted to now be a contributor to the Bowls WA Jack Hi Magazine. I just hope you can suffer through my articles with the minimum of pain and maybe even gain something out of them. My thanks to Bowls WA and BCiB for the opportunity! As I write this, we are just days away from the “Olympics” of bowls, the World Outdoor Championships and when this issue is in your local club we should be right at the pinnacle of Finals. The Championships will be jointly hosted by the Lockleys and Holdfast Bay Bowling Clubs from the 24th November with the final day being the 9th December. All finals will be conducted at the Lockleys Bowls Club. As many of you would know by now, the Australian Team has recently been selected and announced and is as follows... WOMEN Singles - Karen Murphy Pairs - Kelsey Cottrell & Rebecca Quail Triples - Natasha Van Eldik, Lynsey Armitage & Karen Murphy Fours - Natasha Van Eldik, Lynsey Armitage, Kelsey Cottrell & Rebecca Quail (Reserve Claire Duke) MEN Singles - Leif Selby Pairs - Leif Selby & Aron Sherriff Triples - Brett Wilkie, Wayne Ruediger & Mark Casey Fours - Brett Wilkie, Wayne Ruediger, Mark Casey & Aron Sherriff (Reserve Nathan Rice) This team has been through a torrid series of domestic & international events as well as trials and training camps and their own individual programs before hitting the Adelaide greens. And of course, they will need to be at their best to take on the worlds best. Household names such as Alex Marshall, Paul Foster, Robert Weale, Jason Greenslade, Ryan Bester, Natalie Melmore, Amy Faulkner, Jo Edwards, Val Smith, Margaret Letham, etc , etc ,etc who will converge to “Go for Gold” and of course, World Title Glory. Today in the lead up to the championships, apart from practice, we enjoyed being addressed by former Aussie opening Batsman and Wicket Keeper, Wayne Phillips. I sincerely hope you are at home cheering for the Aussie contingent and enjoying some great results.

12

Disciplines will start the competition in one of two qualifying groups with the aim of finishing in the top echelon and therefore advancing to the finals rounds. In the blue ribbon singles events, Ladies rep Karen Murphy will face the likes of New Zealand, Canada, Philippines and Wales while men’s singles specialist, Leif Selby will do battle with New Zealand, Scotland & England just to name a few. In the pairs, our girls will head to head with New Zealand, Scotland and South Africa plus many more while the boys also have New Zealand and Canada. The Trans Tasman duels will continue in the Men’s Triples and they will be joined by Canada, Jersey and Fiji. Our girls 3’s also

face New Zealand along with Ireland, England & Malaysia. Trans Tasman rivalry continues in the Women’s 4’s along with big games against Malaysia, Scotland, Philippines and Canada. The Aussie boys 4’s will miss NZ in their section but will face off against South Africa, Scotland, Canada & Fiji. While I have mentioned the “on paper” dangerous opponents who are our likely finals threats, I still wish to pay tribute and respect to all countries. It was evident at last year’s Asia Pacific Games the smaller nations are certainly more than dangerous and they too will prove to be a major thorn in the side to the more, so called, fancied combinations.

Not something you see everyday.... the Aussies at a team function dressed up.......um... er.... well, differently. That’s me as Sylvester the Cat up the back. Finally, I welcome feedback, queries or information so please feel free to email me at steve@bcib.com.au and I will endeavour to get back to you as soon as possible. Krstic & Cole combine for Victorian Open Triples WA teenagers Rechelle Cole (second) and Kristina Krstic (skip) from Manning Memorial combined with Kyneton’s Chloe Stewart (lead) to put in a brilliant performance to take out the Women’s Triples title at the 2012 Victorian Open on the Indoor green at Shepparton Bowling Club. Taking on the experienced trio of 2011 Singles winner Joy Johnson and team-mates Claire Sanders and Anne Miles from Yarrawonga Mulwala GCR, they dropped a single shot on the first end but immediately

Women’s Triples Winners Chloe Stewart, Rechelle Cole and Kristina Krstic

hit back to draw level after the second and never looked back, going on to take the first set 10-3. The second set was a tighter affair for four ends at which stage Krstic was 6-5 down. But a four in the next end pulled out a big lead they never looked like relinquishing, going on to win every end to take out a 13-6 victory in the second set to win the title, making Cole and Krstic’s trip from Western Australia more than worthwhile. Krstic and Cole who were Australian Open Pairs Finalists in 2011 had decided to enter the Victorian Open, which is also an Australian Open Qualifying Event after having previously failed to qualify in WA. “We were a bit disappointed to get knocked out of the other events but we had a really good team here so we’re happy,” said Krstic. “We have had a really good time at the tournament.” Krstic’s team advanced to the final after an equally impressive semifinal win over Australian and Queensland rep Lindsay Armitage’s side in straight sets 7-6, 12-0. O’Neill from the clouds to take WA State Fours title The opening Championship on the Bowls WA Calendar in the Men’s State Fours was one of the more remarkable held in WA. Played across three days from October 19-21 right from sectional play through to the very last bowl it was a competition that produced some extraordinary bowls and results. Sectional Play began at four venues and when the dust settled a number of high profile sides had already bitten the dust – this included both last years winners, who failed to even win a game and runners up. The second day now into the knockout stage was played at the picturesque DalkeithNedlands Bowling Club and again the upsets continue to flow. A truly remarkable day was completed by the Innaloo side skippered by Paul Walker. His team who were virtual unknowns playing in the second tier first division pennant competition defeated three top combinations. The morning game saw them over 20 shots up before even half the ends had been contested against Brian Axford (Bassendean) before winning 28-11, followed by a narrow two shot winner over David Rhodes also from Bassendean. This set up a clash with the competition favourites who are

The successful Osborne Park side with the State Fours Trophy three times State Fours winners skippered by Anthony Provost. At 14-7 down with just four ends remaining a lucky drive by Walker converted a three down situation to five up and that proved the impetus to go on and win the match. Sadly for the Innaloo competition they were defeated in the semi-finals the next day but the comeback was a precursor for more excitement in the final. In contrasting conditions to the previous fine day after persistent rain had slowed the green the Peter Cole skippered team of Joe Krstic, Greg Hogg and Graham O’Brien jumped out of the blocks in cool and damp conditions, charging to a seven to nil lead after five ends. The Osborne Park team of Steve O’Neill, Pat Caffell, Daniel Adams and Lewis Grigg finally got on the board with a two on the sixth end. With both leads in good form the game stayed even for the next seven ends with both teams struggling to put together consecutive scoring ends. After 13 ends and the score at 16-8 in Coles favour, the composite Manning/ Vic Park Carlisle team were starting to see the finish line. Two solid ends saw the Osborne Park team pick up three shots to move within reach at 11-16. With the pressure now on the team that had led the whole game, it was Peter Cole’s turn to respond. With close bowls by all players the Cole team put one hand on the trophy with a four and a 20-11 lead. Not even the most diehard Osborne Park supporter would have been dreaming of a win when their team was 11-20 behind with two ends to go. In fact Pat Caffell’s wife Joyce who was posting updates on Facebook had even declared the match over and had congratulated the opposing side on their title. Similarly some Manning supporters were beginning to pre-empt victory on the popular social media site and rightly so. Being behind by nine shots with two ends to play would deflate many a great team and all looked lost for O’Neill. Even when they picked up a four to move within five with one end to play, a win still seemed unlikely. The Cole team had been consistent all day and giving away two consecutive large scores

seemed highly unlikely and when Graham O’Brien and Greg Hogg had completed their bowls it seemed even more unlikely. However the head was building up with Osborne Park bowls all in the same area of the green. What was needed was a man who had done it all before and luckily Osborne Park had such a third. Looking to celebrate his birthday with a State Title, Pat Caffell came to the mat needing to produce a little magic. With superb line and length, Caffell was able to move the jack into a dangerous position. Not quite far enough for the numbers needed but all set up for the skipper to be a hero. With Krstic unable to cover adequately, the game was ready for former Country and now Osborne Park skipper Steve O’Neill to show his experience. With his team holding their breath, O’Neill stepped up and duly trailed the jack to hold seven shots and an unlikely victory. Now with all the pressure on his shoulders, Cole stepped onto the mat. Playing with two metres of weight, the crowd watched as it failed to sit an Osborne Park bowl and find the holes to go through the head. With the damage done, O’Neill did not add a counter with his last bowl but more importantly did not fill any holes. Playing the same shot with the same weight, victory for Cole seemed possible as half way down the green the line looked likely to take it towards the shot bowls. But hope turned to agony, again the Cole team watched their bowl again fail to sit anything and sail through the small holes. While you may have expected shouts of joy from the O’Neill team and supporters for a moment all was quiet as everybody took the time to realise what had just happened. To make eleven shots on the last two ends to win a Western Australian State Fours Title is a fairy tale that not many would believe. But for the small crowd at the Dalkeith Nedlands Bowling Club is was a reality and one thing is for sure it will be long remember in the Osborne Park Bowling Club. On the other hand the losing side will take a long time to work out what they did wrong. In the end, they did nothing wrong and were beaten by a couple of magic bowls at exactly the right time. mediatonic.com.au

Australian Open Mixed Pairs Qualifying The WA Qualifying for the Australian Open was finalized with the Mixed Pairs played at Doubleview Bowling Club on November 10th and 11th resulting in two successful sides off to Darebin Victoria to represent WA in February. Clive Adams (Wanneroo) partnered by Pam Chalmers (Osborne Park) proved too good in their final when they defeated Thomas Mitchell (Victoria Park Carlisle) and Laura Merz (Manning) 12-5, 10-10. For Chalmers it was her fourth successful qualifying having already won through in Women’s Singles, Pairs and Triples. She was outstanding in the

final handling the tricky wind with ease to set up good scoring positions for her partner Adams who generally added to the count. Thomas Mitchell played well especially in the second set but found it tough to counter the good play of two quality opposition. The other final was a very tight affair, the South Perth pair of Glenn Pauling and Elizabeth Petrich were playing well but got challenged all the way. After dropping the first set Michael Yates (Perth and Tatts) and Angela Sharp (Gosnells) picked up a two to claim the second set 7-6. They then looked a big chance to take the match with a good two in the first set of the tiebreak. However Elizabeth Petrich put two bowls within inches of the jack which Yates could not remove and leveled the scores before a bit of a scrappy last end saw Pauling play the winning bowl with his last delivery to draw shot. Yates attempted running shot sailed under the head to give Pauling and Petrich a narrow but well deserved victory. All four players put in good performances in a match that could have gone either way.

Stability and a Flat Finish in Henselite’s newest bowl “Fusion” is the process or result of joining two or more things together to form a single entity. It was this concept that Mark Hensell, Managing Director of Henselite, had in mind when he undertook the development of Henselite’s new bowl. “The challenge for us was to make a bowl that had the predictability and stability of a wider bias bowl but that met the requirements of the modern game of lawn bowls that may be played on perfect fast running greens. These requirements are for a bowl with a narrower line and flat finish into the head,” he said. “With the Fusion bowl we have created that balance by using the bowl’s own mass to give it the stability and then its bias to create the precise trajectory required for Australia and NZ’s free-running greens. Fusion brings together these elements to create the perfect bowl for faster greens.” “Henselite has over 80 years of experience in designing and engineering bowls. We use all that knowledge and expertise in engineering that we have gathered each time we create a new model bowl. It’s something we take very seriously. We look closely at the conditions and the requirements of bowlers and then apply our expertise, thorough testing and quality control, to the manufacturing processes we have innovated and developed over time, to make a bowl that fulfils all these requirements. We test it thoroughly on different surfaces, in a variety of conditions together with input from experts in the game including world champion bowlers, top coaches and industry experts.” “This is why you won’t see us bringing out three or four different model bowls at a time. With Henselite it’s not a case of putting out a bowl and seeing how it goes. Each model is rigorously designed, sampled, machined and tested until we are certain we have the balance right.” Fusion will sit alongside the Dreamline XG in the Henselite stable. “The Dreamline XG is a great all round bowl and can be used on a variety of different surfaces.” said Hensell. The Fusion will complement this by providing an option for bowlers when playing on faster greens. “ Bowlers will find that the Fusion holds a consistent line on weighted shots, a key to successful shot conversions. It will have a consistent arc to the head, with no evidence of a late curl at the end of its run. The flat finish means this bowl will stay with the jack on weighted shots.

Over 60’s National Series Results WA Women claim bronze The WA Women’s Over 60’s side have claimed third place at the National Sides Series at Queanbeyean Bowling Club in the ACT which ran from October 15th to 19th. Lee Poletti’s side was brilliant recording a 22-9 win in the last match to carry the day as WA won against Victoria 53-45 to finish third. The WA side finished equal on points with NSW and Qld but those sides had more rink wins. WA had defeated NSW & Qld in the round robin format but costly losses on the opening day to Tasmania and South Australia proved crucial in the final standings. The best player medal for the Series was award jointly to Angela Sharp (Gosnells) and Elizabeth Petrich (South Perth). Playing in the same rink with Angela skip and Elizabeth lead their rink recorded four wins and two losses, +32 shots.

David Holt, Commonwealth Games Gold Medallist was one of the expert bowlers involved in the testing and trialling of the bowl. “I found the stability and consistency in all conditions - particularly difficult wind - means I am hitting the right line time and time again when using this bowl.” he said, “On the drives and running shots it has much less tendency to deviate off course - if you start it right then you’ve got it.” Bowlers will have the opportunity to try the eagerly awaited Fusion bowl from Henselite which is due for release in December 2012 and will be available in all good bowls shops.

CLUB IN PROFILE

Glen Forrest

For the past 82 years there’s been a little gem tucked away, almost secretively in a leafy Hills village – it’s the Glen Forrest Bowls Club. But word of the elegant old club in McGlew Road is spreading . . . and membership is increasing. Bowls, established there in 1930, is a major part of the Sports Club, which was incorporated years earlier and which is now also home to cricket, darts, pool and bridge. The Mundaring Probus also meets there. There are two turf bowling greens, and one, the A Green, is named after two stalwarts - life member Keith Sherry and Bill Rushton. They and others – including Lucky Sofoulis, Jimmie Cairns, Barry Whitcomb and Bruce Myles give unstintingly of their volunteer time. The small, intimate clubroom, nestled among tall eucalypts, has a skilled staff operating the bar, and there are two great stone fireplaces with glowing logs in winter. The club is a very popular venue for village events – from birthdays to pantomimes to quiz nights to celebrations of the seasons and everything in between. On summer evenings

20

it is a magnet for young families with children from toddlers to young teens. Bowls Club President Phil Bullock said: “On the face of it, this is primarily a sports club, with over 300 members. “But it is so much more socially – it draws people together and maintains a sense of community, of belonging – and keeps alive the village sense of identity. Glen Forrest may have only won silver in their first Saturday pennant game – but they got gold in the fashion stakes. The club has issued smart new shirts all round, for ladies and men. President Phil Bullock said: “There’s a new buzz at the club, and against the national trend, we’re attracting members. So we thought we’d go the whole hog and freshen up with a new look – for the club itself, and especially for the members. “In no small measure this has been made possible by the generosity of our sponsors.

“We are deeply grateful to Bendigo Bank. “Their Mundaring Financial Services committee has provided a grant which enabled us to provide our great new shirts at a serious discount to our members. We thank the committee and Neridah and Lee for the assistance they gave us in our successful application. “We’re grateful to our new members, too Cedric De’Saran and Col Bootland of De Luxe Coatings in Malaga - who have contributed to the club in several meaningful ways.” He paid tribute, too, to Healthway: “Thanks to this valuable government enterprise we have been able to upgrade our solar protection, with shade cloth and sunscreen – and to provide an elegant setting for our A Green, which drew excellent comments from the greens inspectors recently.” Said Phil: “Pity we came second to Valley first up, but the club is very definitely intent on climbing the promotional ladder.”

Leeming 25th Anniversary The Leeming Bowling Club 25th Anniversary was held at the club on Monday 1st October 2012 with approximately 120 people attending. The attendees included ten founder members, Joe Francis MLA and Club Patron and the City of Melville Mayor Russell Aubrey. A mixed pop sticks triples was held starting at 1.00pm followed by a high tea at 4.00pm which was provided by the club and members. Thanks to Michel’s Patisserie, Success and Kim Hernadez who both donated birthday cakes. Founder member and club historian Bob Blyth recounted the journey from the beginning to where we are today. The original club room was an old demountable classroom purchased from the White Gum Valley primary school for $1.00 but costing $7,000 for transportation. When the new clubrooms were built, it then cost $10,000 to demolish the old one.

A & M Williams Classic at Kukerin The annual A. and M. Williams bowling classic was played at the Kukerin bowling club on October 23rd and 24th. Once again this very popular event attracted a capacity field of high class bowlers from a large area of the South West of W.A. with entries in long before closing date. Players attended from Albany, Middleton Beach, Dunsborough, Eaton, Gnowangerup, Kojonup, Katanning, Narrogin, Wagin, Kulin, Dumbleyung, Lake Grace, and Newdegate. At the end of play on the first day, after some intense competition seven teams were locked together on three wins and all teams had lost one or more games. Day two saw Warren Holt’s team emerge as winners after a couple of very close encounters and losing only one game. M. Mott and team out of Dunsborough were in second place on 28 pts and 28 shots up by a very narrow margin from a Wagin side led by C. Douglas on 24 pts and 22 shots up. All players were impressed and very happy with the new concept of how the carnival was conducted this year. The Kukerin Bowling Club extends a big thank you to all visiting bowlers and our sponsors for their continued support of this event. your superannuation savings will go if you don’t last the distance? A common misconception is that a superannuation death benefit forms part of a deceased estate, and is therefore distributed in accordance with the Will of the deceased. Because superannuation savings are held in trust by a super fund, and not personally owned, distribution of super proceeds may be at the discretion of the super fund trustee. One way of ensuring your super is distributed in accordance with your wishes is to make a valid binding death benefit nomination, which will override the discretion of the trustee. One of the risks with binding nominations is that members may forget to change their nominations if their circumstances or relationships change. As an example, a client of mine was horrified recently when I noted that their considerable super savings were nominated to go her ex husband, from whom she was going through an acrimonious divorce. Another risk is that as binding nominations often expire after three years, they may expire without action being taken to renew. Another consideration is that superannuation death benefits are only payable in accordance with superannuation law, generally to the dependents of the deceased or to their estate. Eligible dependents include the spouse of the deceased, children of any age, financial dependents and a person who had an interdependency relationship. An interdependency relationship can include having a close personal relationship, living together, or providing domestic or financial support by either person. As in life, tax is a consideration in death when it comes to superannuation death benefits. A key consideration is to understand how different beneficiaries of super benefits may be taxed differently. A super benefit paid will generally include a “tax free” component and a “taxable” component. A tax free component will generally arise from any after tax contributions made to a superannuation account, whereas the taxable component will include contributions for which a tax deduction has been claimed, together with accumulated earnings. A life insurance benefit may be considered an “untaxed” component if premiums for the policy have been paid through super and a tax deduction claimed by the fund. Any superannuation death benefit is tax free if received by a tax dependent, such as a surviving spouse, children under age 18, financial dependents, and those with an interdependency relationship. Otherwise, the taxable component of a lump sum benefit may be taxed at 16.5% and any untaxed benefit taxed at 31.5%. If superannuation is paid as an income stream, or pension, it is possible to nominate a reversionary beneficiary whom could continue to receive the income tax free under certain circumstances. After working hard to accumulate a meaningful super balance it would be nice to know the proceeds would end up going where you wish, and that the tax man doesn’t get more than he should. There are legitimate strategies to reduce the taxable component of a super balance, and therefore any tax payable by adult children on inherited super. As always it may pay to seek professional advice. W.A RSL Bowls News After numerous trials and tribulations and

heaps of sausages to keep up their

strength the RSL Selectors have chosen the following bowlers to represent WA at the Interstate RSL Bowls Carnival in Melbourne. Two new members, Singapore ex Army veterans Willy Tan and Mike Ong and country members Kevan McKenzie (Collie), John Rowe (Albany) and Bruce Hutton (Bruce Rock) are in the mix. We have not had much joy since joining the Australian RSL Bowls in 1971, W.A won in 1976, perhaps this year will be our turn. W.A was in line for a hat-trick in the Dr Krantz Trophy last year at Tweed Heads, but was narrowly beaten in the final round. However, these are strong representative teams and we wish them luck.
