From the President

GRAHAM LEEKS • Players battle it out in the finals of Country Week.

Another successful season concludes The pennant season is now over and many clubs are celebrating with new premiership flags on their clubhouse wall. No club could be more proud than Manning, who won both the Ladies and Men’s Premier League flags, made more exciting, as this was the clubs first ever men’s premier league championship. For those privileged to watch the two finals, both games were of high class and a credit to all.

Country Week Men’s and Ladies’ Country weeks held some weeks ago were a great success and whilst numbers were down, this did not affect the quality and keenness of the competition, which as always was played in good spirit and friendship. We are grateful to the many clubs who were prepared to help with hosting both events.

Australian Side Series The Side Series held at the Yokine Bowling club was an outstanding success despite the weather being a little dismal. There was some outstanding games played by some of the best players in Australia and it was very encouraging to see such large crowd of local supporters, especially around the rink on which our teams were playing. Whilst our teams both finished a little lower that we were hoping, it did not reflect on the competitiveness of both teams who always gave of their best, but not quite able to match it with the some of the other states. My congratulations to the Yokine club and in particular President Gary Millar and Club Manager Neil Cole and their many volunteers, for making the tournament such a memorable success, confirmed to me by many visiting players and officials on the closing day.

Upcoming Forum

• New Board Member, Lisa Featherby.

Board Restructure In the last Jack Hi I reported that Board member Olivia Linden was on extended leave from the Board due to ill health. Sadly this has now resulted in the need for Olivia to resign from the Board and although a Board member for only a short time we valued her contribution. I am pleased to advise that the Board has appointed Lisa Featherby to fill the vacancy. We welcome Lisa who has extensive commercial and business experience and being a current State team member and Premier League skipper, has a widespread understanding of the local bowls scene. We look forward to Lisa making a significant contribution to the Board in the future.

4

During May we will be holding both a Ladies Forum and a Presidents’ Forum. Dates have already been advised to clubs and details concerning the venue and the Forum agenda will be sent to clubs very soon. I hope your club will be represented at both forums, as this is the opportunity for Clubs to give us some feedback as to what they would like to see us doing and we can provide information back to clubs on issues important to them.

Awards Dinner The Bowls WA Annual Awards dinner will be held on Friday May 22nd at Crown Perth. This is the night when we celebrate and recognise the achievements of our bowlers, volunteers and clubs. So organise a table of 10 and be there to join in the fun.

From the Chief Executive Officer

KEN PRIDE

Bowls Connect is a great success Congratulations to the Yokine Districts Bowling Club for their very successful hosting of the Sides Series. In what can only be described as terrible conditions for bowls, the club, its greens and band of volunteers were outstanding in making light of some difficult situations – on and off the green. Players and Bowls Australia officials were full of praise for the event and rightly so. In an amazing final 20 minutes of the Series, SA let the Alley Shield slip from its grasp; I think everyone who witnessed those final few ends felt somewhat shellshocked at the outcome and felt for the SA boys who had played so well throughout. However NSW were the winners in both men’s and women’s event, with the ladies dominating the Series – congratulations to them both. For our sides it was a disappointing Series and we must learn from where SA has come from in recent years as we look to the future and rebuild our interstate reputation. At the conclusion of the Series, Therese Hastings announced her retirement from representative bowls after 178 state games. Therese has been and continues to be an ornament to the game and her leadership on and off the green will be sorely missed – many thanks Therese for a fine career.

ANZ partnership I am very pleased to announce that Bowls WA and the ANZ Bank will form a partnership that will give clubs the opportunity to significantly benefit. The Mortgage Introducer Program will offer Bowls WA clubs the opportunity to earn significant income from introducing home loan clients to the Bank. The program has been operating very successfully at Bowls SA for a number of months and after careful consideration the Board has agreed to form a WA partnership. Specific details will be forwarded to clubs in due course and a presentation from the Bank will be given at the Presidents’ Forum in mid May. The Thornlie and Osborne Park clubs have agreed to “test” the program initially. We look forward to growing this program to assist clubs in coming months.

Annual Dinner and Awards Night The highlight of the year will again be held at Crown Perth on the evening of the 22nd May. This year Mt Lawley member and ABC radio presenter Russell Woolf will compare the evening and as always we look forward to a fantastic night – hurry and purchase your last minute tickets from Bowls WA today.

Game Review Once again the ‘off season’ will provide Bowls WA committees the opportunity to review the structures in place for pennant and other aspects of the calendar for the 2015/16 season and beyond. Members and their clubs are encouraged to submit recommendations for those committees to consider in order to seek continual improvement in the game we all love to play. A word of warning for next season though; with a very early Easter the fixtures will be very compressed and an earlier start to the season highly likely. Details will be communicated to club representatives at the Forums in May.

Capitation 2015/16 The board after careful consideration has set capitation at $49.50 (metropolitan) and $45.00 (country) for next year. The difference acknowledges the extra work done by country leagues in running their pennant competitions as well as Inter League and Zone events, a task done by Bowls WA in the metro area. For those that query the metro increase it was noted with interest that Bowls NSW has increased their capitation from $44.00 to $60.00 for next year in order to build funds in which to reinvest back into the game. Enjoy the off season ahead.

Striving for Personal Achievement from Grass Root Inclusion Programs to National Events…

Bowlers with a disability on the rise At the time of writing this article we have close to twenty Bowlers with a Disability anticipating their participation in Bowls WA’s inaugural Multi Disability State Championships on the 18th and 19th of April at Kardinya Bowling Club. With four available categories, seven have entered for Hearing Impairment (Deaf), five for Intellectual Disability and another seven for Physical Disability. I look forward to providing a full account of these games along with some fantastic pictures in our next edition of Jack Hi!

Boccia WA and Bowls WA Partnering Bowls WA have agreed to form a partnership with Boccia WA to promote Inclusion in both sports amongst Secondary Schools in the metropolitan area under the umbrella of the Australian Sports Commission Sporting Schools program. While this initiative is very new we look forward to providing more information in further editions of Jack Hi.

BowlAbility Participation increases 2015 has brought with it an increase in participation at Kardinya Bowling Club’s Friday BowlAbility program. New clients from Activ (across different metro areas), Brightwater Care, WorkPower and Identity WA have added character and enthusiasm to this long running program bringing players from a range of backgrounds, including physical and intellectual impairments, to bowl side-by-side under the shade cloths. Megan, a Carer from Rocky Bay – Discovering Abilities Organisation, supports Tracy who bowls from a wheelchair. Megan is a colourful and exuberant bowler who keeps everyone’s spirits up with her quirky nature and funky outfits. On Megan’s last day of work before heading to entertain Turkish Residents with her outstanding personality we decided to have a ‘Funky Dress’ day so that Megan could walk out with her character in tact – I matched Anna’s bright personality with some bright clothes of my own…hence our ‘Best Funky Outfit’ picture I thought our readers may enjoy:-)

Department of Sport and Recreation Forums a wealth of Resources The Department of Sport and Recreation provide a wealth of information from courses and forums they hold. Recently Sport Inclusion Officers were invited to participate in a Harmony Week Forum focusing on our Islamic Community and cultural background – the forum was well attended and very insightful as to cultural differences when participating in sport and recreation. In addition there have been forums on Disability in Sport and Women in Sport – all of which provided 6

From the Country Director

Linda Deegan-Humphries

Improving our communications With the current season winding down it is time to reflect upon our performance, both playing and administrative. We need to be thinking about ways to improve our competitions and the information sent out about them. Remember that we each interpret instructions differently and some of us even misread dates and times.

Country Week Country week events, likewise, have been played with enthusiasm and great skill. Congratulations to all winners and an extra congratulation to Noelene Abe for winning back to back singles. I would like to acknowledge the clubs that hosted events and Bowls WA Staff and Volunteers who worked many, many hours to make it all happen. Well Done!

Interzone Round Robin IZRR’s held at Middleton Beach (Mens 4’s), Dudley Park (Women’s 4’s) and Kalgoorlie (Women’s pairs) were each very successful events. Congratulations to the host Zones/ Leagues/Clubs for the efficient running of these and a very big congratulations to all players selected to play. Play certainly reflected the skills of these players yet there could be only one winner in each event. Congratulations to the Southern Zone for the win in both the Men’s and Women’s IZRR Fours and to Northern Zone for the win in the IZRR Pairs. I enjoyed quite a lot of days observing spectacular bowling and I personally thank all those members whom made me welcome at these events. I have covered quite a lot of territory attending these events and have been made welcome at Clubs along the way. Thank you for the experience, company and conversation.

Bowls Connect The Bowls Connect roll-out is scheduled to commence during the coming months. Please take note of your dates and venues and encourage participation, which are listed on page 42. The program will eventually make recording and organising so much easier.

P&A Course The first course for Presenters and Assessors will be held in May with twelve participants. A second course is being negotiated for later in the year. Offers and suggestions for a venue should be forwarded to me by email.

Country Coaching Country Coaching Enhancement is scheduled for August. Zone dates are published in the November minutes of the Country Committee. If you are invited to participate, I hope that you are able to accept and take advantage of this prestigious opportunity. This year participants are expected to be, or at least close to, ILRR standard.

New Season Ahead The fixtures for next year’s events are currently being considered. It is difficult to fit all events in to suit everyone and I ask that my Country Colleagues understand that we are trying to accommodate your wishes. The window of opportunity to make the most of ideal weather conditions is not wide enough to include every event in an ideal time slot but every effort is being made to minimize this issue. Finally, congratulations to all Pennant, League Championship and Club Championship winners for this season and a reminder that the Bowls WA Awards Night is on Friday 22nd May.

• IZRR Women’s Fours winners played at Dudley Park.

From the Umpires

MICHAEL GOBLE-GARRATT

Follow the basic ‘Etiquette of Bowls’ Yet another season has come and gone with the seasons end bringing its usual string of claims and counter-claims of breaches of the Laws. Some of these have related to interpretation of the Laws as introduced in the new format, January 2015 Crystal Mark 3rd Edition, ‘Laws of the Sport of Bowls’. While others have really been various attempts to circumvent the rules, including field of play rules and the various policies that govern our sport in addition to the Laws. These are equally binding when drawn up in compliance with the Laws and it behoves us to have, at least, a basic understanding of those rules. They are actually very succinctly covered by a document that forms part of every Coaches’ armoury – the Etiquette of Bowls. By following this, particularly new bowlers but also more seasoned ones, it would lift the level of on-green sportsmanship to that worthy of our sport. Having seen first hand several breaches of the Laws, both deliberate and inadvertent, such as holding up play by the skip and players, not in possession of the rink on changing ends, to constant milling around the head when a player on the mat is trying to bowl. Most of these breaches of the Laws would be avoided by sticking to the basic etiquette, so it is timely for it to be published as a reminder for all to ponder over the coming months.

Etiquette 1. The etiquette of the game of bowls is a combination of good manners, sportsmanship and sociability. 2. Be conversant with the Laws and etiquette of the Game, and observe them. 3. Respect the decision of the Umpire. Their decision on a measure is not questioned. Umpires and Markers should be treated with respect at all times. Make sure markers are instructed before the game and thank both after the game. 4. Be punctual to commence play at all matches and come to each game correctly attired. 5. Laws of the Game demand that you inform your opponent if you wish to leave the green. Ten minute limit. Leaving the green without consent of the opponent can lead to forfeiting the game. 6. Always allow your opponent the right to the head as spelt out in the rule book, failure to so decreases the enjoyment of the game. 7. Walk close to the centre of the rink when changing ends; you could distract play on the next rink. Obey the encroachment rule.

8

• ‘Etiquette of Bowls’ are best described as the unwritten Laws of the Game.

8. Keep quiet and still when players are on the mat. 9. Stand well back while your opponent bowls, behind the player. 10. Delaying play – players must play their shot with minimum delay. 11. It is courtesy to stand still at the head when a player is about to bowl. Movement at the head or talking at the mat end is very distracting. 12. Always pay your skip the respect of waiting for instructions before stepping on the mat. Don’t step onto the mat and indicate which way you intend playing – wait for the skip’s instructions. Don’t criticise your skipper’s bowls. He/she has two bowls. The rest of you have six. 13. Don’t deliver your bowl until the previous bowl has come to rest. It is not yet your mat. 14. Keep your mind on the game and be ready with your bowl in hand when it is your turn to bowl. 15. Everyone at the mat end should assist in moving bowls after the end is declared, (behind and to one side of the mat) – Score card keeper to register score first. 16. Never applaud unlucky bowls, nor wave your opponents bowl through. 17. Respect the green surface, always bend to straighten the mat. Don’t drop bowls from the bank onto the green, be careful not to walk in the ditch etc. Take care to protect and conserve our expensive greens. 18. Smoking is not permitted on greens or surrounds of any greens synthetic or grass. 19. Mobile phones must be turned off unless you have special permission from the umpire. 20. If you lose, be a good loser. Just as importantly, be a good winner. 21. Win or lose, always shake the hand of your opponents and thank them for the game. 22. Always acknowledge exceptional play. Acknowledge a good call. 23. Bowls should be carried from the green, particularly if another game is still in progress. 24. Club house courtesy. Home team players should sit with their opponents and offer the first drink. 25. Do not sit on the bank. It is off-putting to the player on the mat; can damage the green; can damage yourself (injury from wayward bowl/jack). Club duty of care, notice on club board. 26. Leave your bad bowls on the green, tomorrow is another day. These courtesies are best described as the unwritten ‘Laws of the game’. Above all enjoy the game for its pleasure and the lasting friendship it provides. BowlsWA • Jack Hi • Autumn 2015

Busy time for squad

• Mark Cowan (NTC Vic/Tas), Therese Hastings (NTC WA), Faye Luke (NTC SA/NT), Steve Glasson (National Coach), Peter Brown (BA High Performance Coordinator), Brett Wilkie (NTC Qld) and Gary Willis (NTC NSW/ACT).

It has been a busy couple of months for several of our squad members with training commitments for those selected to represent WA in the Sides Championships as well as their training program for the NTC squad. For Kristina Krstic it has not only been very hectic but incredibly rewarding with Gold Medal performances in the Junior World Cup Singles and Mixed Pairs held on the Gold Coast at Broadbeach. As a member of the Australia A Squad, Kristina has continued to develop her skills and game play to give herself every opportunity of selection in an Australian Open Team for future world events. However, Kristina isn’t the only NTC player who has been working hard completing drills and practicing their skills. Laura Merz, Clive Adams and Matt Ellul have also been on the training track preparing to square off against the best bowlers in Australia at Yokine. Being a member of the NTC Squad requires players to train regularly and work towards performance goals in an effort to attract the attention of the National Selectors. One such opportunity for these athletes will be to play well in the WA State side. Other members of the squad have had very successful pennant seasons with Matt Ayres being a member of the Premier League Pennant winning team from Manning, Lewis Grigg moving up the line to play third in the PL for Osborne Park and Nathan Jones making his debut in PL for Kardinya. Lizzy Allan has also had a winning year at the U18 Championships and will be hoping to continue to develop her skills in the senior ranks. Recently, the National Coach Steve Glasson and the NTC coaches from around Australia have been taking part in a three day conference held in Perth. The focus of the meetings is to highlight expectations and standards for NTC coaches and athletes and to enable a sharing of ideas and expertise. For athletes in WA and indeed throughout the nation it is important to understand that nothing less than 100% commitment to the attainment of their goal to one day represent Australia will see them succeed. So we will be doubling our efforts over the winter months to ensure that every one of our squad members is prepared for the challenges ahead. Developing Champions Program…

DSR and WAIS to provide opportunities to young athletes The Developing Champions Program has been developed by the Department of Sport and Recreation (DSR) in partnership with the Western Australian Institute of Sport (WAIS) to assist aspiring young athletes to gain interpersonal and personal life skills. It provides an opportunity to learn from experienced WAIS athletes and staff about what it takes to achieve success, both in sport and in their lives outside of sport. To this end, a group of young, aspiring bowlers were invited to take part in the program which will take place over the next 12 months. The first workshop was on February 15 at DSR in Leederville. The group of Dayna Cant, Brooke Newstead, Lizzy Allan, Ryan Philpott, Lewis Grigg, Kevin McKay, Shenayde Heldt, Connor Biddle, Laura Merz, Josh Hamilton, Kristina Krstic and Kelli Rogalski were introduced to topics including Goal Setting, Communication, Planning, Timetabling and Prioritising. The Presenter Amanda Schonfeld and WAIS athlete Olivia Vivian led the group through a number of activities and workbook questions designed to encourage the athletes to think about their sporting commitment and life balance, mood and emotions, self-awareness, lifestyle management and process goals. Olivia Vivian, a medal winning gymnast for Australia, gave the group insight into what it takes to be the very best you can and the choices and sacrifices that you are required to make along the road to success as she takes up the story. “One of my favourite things about mentoring the Developing Champions workshops is learning about all the different sports and the challenges they have to face,” said Vivian, who no doubt gained some insights into what Bowls is all about. “At today’s workshop with lawn bowls I learned how hectic their weekly schedule can be and how most of them don’t have set times for training. This can make planning for the week a bit tricky, but not impossible. “Since the majority of them hadn’t done a weekly planner, Amanda Schonfeld and I made them fill one out using colour

10

boxes for each of their weekly and daily commitments. It’s important to make sure they are nice and detailed, right down to meal times and transport. “It was really good to see some of them actually realise how busy they are and on the contrary some had too much free time. It’s always a good idea to do a weekly planner so you can see what you have coming up this week, plan and prepare for them, and it’s a fantastic way to help relieve some of the stresses that come with disorganisation. “Another helpful section of the workshop was breaking down a process goal. In terms of improving a sporting skill, imagine if you spent 15 minutes after each training session working on something you needed to improve on. “After four sessions that already an extra hour of training, and after four weeks that could mean an extra 4-10 hours depending on your weekly load. 15 minutes each could end up improving your skill level and helping you become closer to your ultimate dream!” GOOD LUCK to all of the Lawn Bowls WA representatives in going on to achieve their ultimate dreams. And may the journey be an enjoyable one!” Feedback from the group was that the three and a half hour workshop was not only very interesting and informative but also emphasised that success comes through striving for excellence and working hard to achieve goals. This program is designed to assist the participants to become successful athletes – those who not only achieve sporting excellence but are also champions in life. The next workshop will take place on Sunday 24 May 2015. – Raj Suares and Therese Hastings

Titleholders crowned at Men’s Country Week After seven days of competitive bowls at twenty venues spread across the metropolitan area Melville Bowling Club played host to three exciting Men’s Country Week finals which saw some new names added to the winners honour roll.

France breaks through for Singles Title Merredin’s Matthew France got off to a dream start with a full count on the first end however it didn’t take long for Donald Thomson (Tammin) to settle as he picked up a couple of shots and then a single on the next two ends. The 24yo France who defeated fellow young gun Matthew Pennington (Busselton) in the semi-final had watched Thomson get the better of his former WA Under 18 teammate Justin Smith (York) 21-17 and was certainly expecting another tight affair. A three to Thomson made it 6-all after five ends but that was as close as the Tammin bowler would get to France in the final. A second full count made 14-6 three ends later extended his lead, Thomson fought valiantly to win the next four ends and close the gap to two however France kept peppering the jack to lead 18-12 after just 14 ends to be within touching distance of the trophy. France did not disappoint, using some of the experience he had gained playing Premier League for his previous Metro club Yokine, he picked up the three shots required to win the blue-ribbon Men’s Country Week Singles title with the final lasting less than an hour.

• Matthew France from Merredin with the Singles Trophy and P.S. Bignell Shield.

First pairs title for Dalwallinu The Dalwallinu pair of Glen ‘T-Bone’ Jones and Dan Jolly were the toast of Dalwallinu after securing the club’s first ever Pairs Country Week title and they did it in grand style conceding just two shots in the final. Following a 19-10 Semi-final win of the Merredin pair of Brian Gearing and Adrian Chesson Dalwallinu’s Glen Jones and Dan Jolly absolutely dominated the final against Graham Needs and Brian Jones (Dudley Park). Earlier in the day Needs and Jones had got the better of Busselton’s Matthew Pennington and Peter Fancote 15-12 but there was no stopping Dalwallinu after they picked up a seven on the first end of the final. They extended their lead to 12-1 after just three ends and 19-1 after seven. Down 20 shots with Dalwallinu holding a further seven, Needs bravely cut the count to two; however, he and Jones had seen enough and conceded defeat with only ten of the 14-end final played.

Pairs Winners Glen Jones, Dan Jolly (Dalwallinu) def. Graham Needs, Brian Jones (Dudley Park) 24-2 (10).

Singles Winner Matthew France (Merredin) def. Donald Thomson (Tammin) 21-12.

Corrigin Shark skips his team to Fours victory A superb last two ends from skipper Mark ‘the Shark’ Szczecinski sealed another title for the regular fours combination from Corrigin. Much like the Pairs the Fours final seemed to be heading in a similarly one-side fashion with the Corrigin team of Mark Szczecinski, Clifton Crombie, Harry Gayfer, Steve Sloan racing to a 9-0 lead after six ends. The Wonthella team responded with a four to finally get on the scoreboard while the next seven ends were all singles. Then a two to Wonthella meant they only trailed by two with two ends to play. Skip Mark Szczecinski drew shot with the last bowl on the penultimate end and then again on the last end; his last bowl a toucher that not only gave his side three shots but made it very difficult for the Wonthella skip Colin O’Brien to convert anything into the three shots his team required to force an extra end. With that, Szczecinski and the same Corrigin team comprising Steve Sloan, Clifton Crombie and Harry Gayfer that last lifted the trophy in 2011 were once again named Country Fours Champions.

Fours Winners Mark Szczecinski, Clifton Crombie, Harry Gayfer, Steve Sloan (Corrigin) def. Colin O’Brien, Richard Cobley, Ian Hamilton, Henry Slawinski (Wonthella) 16-10 (17).

Merredin take Bignell Shield Merredin Bowling Club collected the P.S. Bignell Perpetual Memorial for the third time in recent years. Singles winner Matthew France accepted the award on behalf of the club and paid tribute to the Pairs combination of Brian Gearing and Adrian Chesson, whose run to the semi finals contributed to the overall points tally.

Bowls ‘Scholarships’

Encouraging new players Many Clubs are currently doing a great job running school programmes and getting kids across their greens. Junior Jack Attack equipment is allowing our sport to be played actually at the schools, rather than having to get kids to the Club, and our social bowls competitions like corporate bowls and Jack Attack have never been more popular. So, how do we encourage new people that are experiencing the game for the first time to become more regular players? That’s the question for which Clubs are seeking the perfect answer. Many sports have secured their junior future by providing ‘scholarships’ to encourage identified talent to stay in the game and develop their skills, however bowls, in general, has never harnessed this approach, resulting in school kids trying the game, but not having the next step made available to them in a simple and structured manner.

Establishing and Identifying Talent The first step for the Club is making the links with the schools. This can sometimes be done through Club members, however, if not, making contact with the local PE teacher and inviting them to the Club for a Junior Jack Attack demonstration could well be a start. By establishing school programmes, clubs then get the chance to identify up and coming talent, perhaps even with a testing process at the end of a school programme that confirms the talented players in the group.

How to Structure a Scholarship Academic requirements should be agreed with the school as a qualification for the scholarship, so having the teachers on board is important. A scholarship could then include some or all of the following: • Free junior membership of the Club. • Free club uniform (noting shoes would need to be at the player’s expense, or sponsored). • A loaned set of coloured bowls which can be purchased or returned at scholarship completion. • Free social entry fees for Club social bowls competition. • Club Coaching (one or two times a week). • Guaranteed entry into 3 tournaments with high level Club players (during winter perhaps) so young players can meet other young players – they are not left to go alone in the sport. • Club Mentoring. • Facebook updates showing progress.

The cost to the club isn’t actually very high, with the bowls being the highest ticket item, but only being on loan. Clubs should look to offer 4 scholarships per year to the same school, ensuring the kids then know each other and can attend practices together. Over a three year period that should see a good injection of youth into any club that successfully executes this process. Players that don’t quite make the scholarship qualification could still be offered free membership of the Club to encourage them to stay in the sport. In the end, a junior membership of the club, costs the club very little. Grants like Kidsport are available towards kids that want to become members of Clubs (there are set requirements), and sponsors are likely to get on board with junior programmes. With entry into State Junior Championships at a concerning low, it is crucial that Clubs move to capture more young people into the sport. Clubs that are interested in running junior bowls at their Clubs should contact Regional Bowls Manager Clive Adams who will attend your Club to discuss it. Clive is also looking to make links between Clubs that are interested in junior bowls to encourage a more collaborative approach. Note: Whilst this piece deals with juniors, a similar approach could be used, with full membership being offered as a prize for your corporate bowls or Jack Attack competitions.

Selling

Sponsorship

Structuring a Sponsor Plan Clubs are always looking for funds, and whilst grants are available for the bigger ticket items, they are difficult to obtain and the competition for funding is huge, especially in the current economic climate. This means a more effective method is required for seeking and obtaining sponsorship. The first step for the Club is finding a Sponsorship Co-ordinator that can do the job. People with a good sales background, or real estate background are generally very good as they have the ‘giftof-the-gab’ and they normally have a great contact database. Clubs should then structure up a sponsorship program that ranges from a club simply having advertising rights, right through to event sponsors and major sponsors of the Club. The club should offer club hire discounts to encourage the sponsors to use the club facilities and perhaps some social memberships as well. Free registration in any corporate bowls or Jack Attack programme the Club is holding should also be included for the major sponsors. Clubs are then very good at putting signage around the Club to advertise sponsors however the reality is that members are far more likely to be at home when they wish to use a sponsor, rather than at the club. A plumber for instance is more likely to be required on the spot, and a member is not going to go looking at the club signage when the need is urgent. Dalkeith-Nedlands is leading the way with a simple but effective way of getting its sponsors out to its members. A simple directory listing made available to all its members provides all with a great way of ensuring the businesses they use are the ones that support the Club. A categorised list, which fits neatly on the fridge, describes simply the service that each sponsor provides making it just so simple for its members to utilise the services. ‘Fred & Co’, for instance, would never get used as no-one would know what service they provide, however with it conveniently listed under ‘Electrician’, anyone requiring that service can make contact. The categorised approach is also a very structured method for Clubs to seek out sponsors. Listing the categories, then finding sponsors to suit the categories is a far more organised BowlsWA • Jack Hi • Autumn 2015

The categorised approach is also a very structured method for Clubs to seek out sponsors. Listing the categories, then finding sponsors to suit the categories is a far more organised method than the ad-hoc opportunist type methods that most Clubs use. Clubs also need to look at where it can use its membership (and social) power to affect CHOICE as that is where a sponsorship can more easily be justified. If your suburb lacks a service, say a hardware store, that’s where your Club has the chance to affect choice. Approaching the hardware stores in other suburbs, and offering that your members will come to them is an attractive prospect to these outlying businesses as it gives them a market advantage. Clubs should also remember that having many smaller sponsors has the advantage that you are less reliant on each of them individually, and they can be easier to manage as expectation may not be as great as the more major sponsors. Having a large social media base that can also be used to promote sponsors is another way of showing businesses the reach they can get by being involved with your Club. ‘Sponsor of the Week’, and a ‘Sponsors Specials’ section on your website and/or social media page could be very effective. Finally, clubs need to provide incentives for members to use the sponsors. Some clubs provide a raffle where members enter using a receipt from a sponsor and the winner gets a bar voucher or reward for using the sponsors – draws can be monthly or bi-monthly. This also provides the Club with valuable information as to which sponsors are being used and this can be used when negotiating for sponsorships in the coming years. For more information on sponsorship, please contact your Regional Bowls Manager Clive Adams who will come to your Club and discuss it with you in more detail with examples and templates that you can use. Doubleview Masters

Mitchell and Ker win Masters title Manning’s Matthew Mitchell and Peter Ker have combined to win the Nexus Doubleview Masters Pairs for the second time having previously taken the title in 2012. Mitchell played off against his brother Tom Mitchell who partnered with Victoria Park Carlisle team mate Rhett Butler in what was an extremely high quality final. Both teams showed plenty of natural skill with all bowlers drawing superbly and also playing weighted shots accurately when needed. Earlier Mitchell and Ker had staged the comeback of the tournament in the semi-finals to recover from a 16-5 deficit to win 17-16 in dramatic circumstances. Still trailing by six with two ends to play a good four set them up with a chance, Mitchell played a great drive to put the jack in the ditch and after Srhoy drew a good second shot once again a pinpoint drive by Mitchell put that bowl in the ditch leaving them with the needed three shots. Srhoy had one last bowl to win the match but was unable to repeat his previous effort. Srhoy and Cockburn partner John Morgan would have been disappointed to lose under the circumstances but no doubt satisfied with their efforts having knocked out some talented pairs on the way to the semi finals.

• Doubleview Masters winners, Matthew Mitchell and Peter Ker.

Mitchell and Butler had a hard fought 20-11 victory in their semi final, they were dominant in the second half of the match after trailing 10-9 to the composite side of Jamie O’Keefe (Stirling) and Bill Brandsma (Doubleview). In the final the match had ebbed and flowed with no more than a handful of shots separating the teams until the scores were locked at 14-14 all with just three ends to play. The next two ends proved the catalyst for the victory as the Manning duo scored successive scores of two to have a very handy four shot buffer going into the last end. Tom Mitchell managed to keep his team’s hopes alive with a powerful drive to kill the end and on the replay drew a front toucher and added another counter to raise their hopes. Butler added another and a draw looked a distinct possibility until Mitchell played a beauty with his last to touch the jack and reduce the count to only one. Tom Mitchell tried to dislodge the bowl but missed narrowly meaning his younger brother and team mate claimed the crown as Masters Pairs champions.

Thornlie Raven Classic

Close finishes in Classic Thornlie Bowling Club hosted its popular Raven Classic again over the Labour Day long weekend, which turned into a tight tussle between several strong teams of four. Thirty-six teams contested for good prize money over the two days, in an atmosphere which mirrored the pleasant, end-ofsummer conditions. There was a smattering of high quality women bowlers on the rinks, for the second year running, which added to the festivities. A Saturday roast and Sunday salad helped stoke the energy levels up through two games of fours and two games of pairs each day. Platters of watermelon served on the green in the afternoon were well received. The format of the carnival has led to close finishes in the past and this year’s competition was no exception.

• Home spoils: Paul Pope, Jim Stean, Mark Separovich and Dave Bradbury.

No team went through undefeated. The last team, or Next Year’s Champions, took away a $100 cash consolation prize. But every other team took away at least quite a bit of money in rink wins each day. The overall winners were a home team consisting of (from left) Paul Pohe, Jim Stean, Mark Separovich and Dave Bradbury. Standing behind are Thornlie men’s bowls president Rick Scupham and Ken Wright of sponsors Midland Toyota. BowlsWA • Jack Hi • Autumn 2015

Mosman Park Masters

Coote wins her first Masters title The Ladies Masters singles was played at Mosman Park over the long weekend under fairly windy conditions. The event generously sponsored by Key Choice Financial solutions had 38 entrants all keen to win. Entries have increased over the last few years as Mosman Park and their sponsors have actively prompted the event. Three games were played on the first day to get down to the last eight and the wind proved quite challenging particularly as the day progressed. Late into the afternoon the final between Renata and Hailey got underway. It was an epic final, bowl for bowl for at least the first 20 ends with neither player prepared to concede more than one shot. Hailey was unlucky to slice the jack at one point giving Renate three shots and a mini break and from there it was always going to be difficult. The fight continued and after 35 ends and 2.5 hrs Renata was the eventual winner 24-19. Both players were worthy champions with the game played in great spirits and the quality of the bowls undeniable. It was good to see Hailey come up through the ranks, defeating some strong opposition to get into the final and will no doubt be a force to be reckoned with in future years. Renata is a first time winner of this event and was a very deserving winner. Renate’s enthusiasm for the game and support of bowls in general is great to see. Thanks to the sponsors Key Choice Financial Solutions and the Mosman Park Bowling Club.

Australian Sides Series Championships

Yokine host successful Series The Yokine Districts Bowling Club and their many volunteers were welcoming hosts and provided a warm atmosphere while their greens staff did a magnificent job in tough and trying conditions as 192 of the nation’s best bowlers descended on Perth for the Australian Sides Championships. Game two saw recently-crowned World Junior Champion Kristina Krstic gave WA’s very, merry band of supporters, who had braved the rain on Day One, a grandstand finish. Unfortunately the fairytale ending was dashed by Victoria’s talented youngster Elise Cowan who held her composure to draw shot with the last bowl of the game and win the overall aggregate for her state by the narrowest of margins. There was another ending of sorts as Therese Hastings announced her retirement from competitive state duties at the conclusion of the championships. On reflecting on retirement and a stellar career, Therese said, “I have been fortunate to play in the State Side for 15 years with so many amazing, interesting and talented people. “I know that it’s now time for me to follow a different path but I love the game and will stay involved in some way; and hopefully be able to pass on some of the things I’ve learnt about bowling over the years. “Since I made the decision to retire, I’ve started to reflect as you don’t always have the time to appreciate what you’re doing until it comes to an end. I feel very fortunate.”

• Thomas Mitchell.

When asked about her career highlights, Therese quickly mentioned team success before any individual honours. “The Gold medal in South Australia [2010],” she beamed, “as well as making my debut in 2000 as a second to Roma Dunn.” Choosing a rare home series to make her announcement was naturally a very special occasion. “For all of my family, children and grandchildren to be there on the final day to watch me bowl – some of them for the first time – was a real treat. Some had only seen me on TV!” Not surprisingly, the Assistant Coach and Manager’s hard work and unwavering support did not go unnoticed. “Without the support of my husband Ian throughout my career, I could never have been so successful or played for so long.”

Sides Series Review

WA v ACT The Australian Capital Territory adapted to the wet conditions well to hold sway over our valiant Women who got within five shots late in the game before eventually going down 57-72. Our Men finished strongly, defeating the ACT 70-48. Clive Adams shot out of the blocks early and maintained a potentially match-winning lead throughout; however, ACT had managed to edge in front at the halfway mark of the game. Adams seemed to inspire his fellow two skips as Matthew Ellul and Thomas Mitchell came storming home; Ellul winning 23-17 while Mitchell fought back from 13-20 down to lose by just one.

WA v VIC In the afternoon, WA was no match for a rampant Victorian side. Ellul’s rink managed to carry on their good form from the opening round but Adams and Mitchell suffered heavy defeats. WA’s Women saw a reversal of fortunes when Round 1 winner Lisa Featherby struggled to keep up with a faststarting Carla Odgers while veteran Hastings bounced back to record a solid win over another Jackaroo in Samantha Shannahan. It was left to Australian A star Krstic to rescue a win for her side and despite debutant Toni Madigan’s toucher, which continued to hold shot having been rolled over first by Elizabeth Brooke and then by Robyn O’Brien, Cowan managed to find just enough room to draw the winner. 18

Australian Sides Series Championships Sides Series Review

WA v NSW Western Australia ran into a red-hot New South Wales side that had firmed as favourites to take out both the Alley Shield and the Marj Morris Trophy, during the morning session on Day 2. Commonwealth Games gold-medallist and Perth Solargain Suns coach Wayne Turley led Mitchell by nine shots after ten ends but the young gun managed to turn things completely around winning the last 11 ends 13-4 to salvage a 17-all draw. Adams also found himself 4-13 down, after 12 ends, to David Ferguson and eventually went down 13-20 while unbeaten NTC squad member Ellul edged in front of Aron Sherriff halfway through their encounter. In a see-sawing contest of the highest quality, world champion Sherriff showed his class throughout to run out a 20-14 winner; New South Wales deserving of their 57-44 victory. Karen Murphy quickly put her Test Match loss to Hastings earlier in the week behind her, with a comprehensive 34-10 win over Featherby. Krstic led for much of her game before being overrun by Natasha Scott 24-17, while Hastings gave WA their only rink win for the morning, coming from behind to beat Kelsey Cottrell 18-17. Loyal supporters were made to wait as the 178-Test veteran decided not to her play her last bowl, opting instead for the measuring tape. It was all smiles when her bowl held shot although the overall disappointment a third successive defeat was not awash.

WA v NT Our Women left the Northern Territory without a win after four rounds of competition. Featherby, Hastings and Krstic all led from start to finish to record convincing score lines; 75-40 the aggregate score. The Men were made to work a lot harder by an NT side that had their noses in front at times and were within striking distance at the death. Mitchell was made to sweat until the umpire’s measure ruled in his favour - the single levelled the scores with one end to play. He was also well-served by his third Kyle McIlroy all game and drew shot on the last to get over the line 23-22 against Graeme Kitto. Ellul dropped a four on the 18th end as Scott Chamberlain got within two shots, however, WA’s most consistent rink responded immediately with a couple and then restricted NT to just two singles on the last two ends; 21-19 the final score. Adams had to do it the hard way as Lucas Baker led at the halfway mark before Adams’ rink strung four good ends together. Again, Baker managed to find himself only two down but two more to Adams on the penultimate end put WA sevenup on the big board; Adams more than happy to concede one on the last to win 18-15. BowlsWA • Jack Hi • Autumn 2015

WA v SA

• Trystan Smallacombe.

Our Men got off to a solid start on Day 3, leading 20-15 after 27 ends but the sudden rain seemed to halt all momentum as SA picked up 16 shots to one in nine ends. Mitchell’s rink was well in command in their battle with Max Kleinig, up 18-10 while Adams and Ellul both found themselves trailing 10-17 to Wayne Ruediger and Scott Thulborn respectively. Mitchell had to settle for 20-15 win while Adams and Ellul struggled to make any real inroads against the in-form SA and surprise package of the championships thus far. The SA Women also started the morning session with hopes of winning their maiden Marj Morris Trophy but they seemed to be vanishing when Featherby opened up a potential matchwinning lead over Penny Landherr. Krstic fought back from 2-12 down after just six ends to overtake Breeanna Dickson with three ends to play. A three to Krstic had WA sitting pretty but Dickson responded in kind with a three and then two more on the last to tie 20all, foreshadowing what was to come. Hastings and Renee McPharlin were locked at 15-all after 18 ends with the young South Aussie continually maintaining the pressure on her more experienced opponent. McPharlin bravely picked up three on the last end to win 21-15 but the tied aggregate all but ended SA’s chances of upsetting NSW’s run.

WA v TAS Hastings quickly bounced back from the morning’s disappointment to inspire her side to victory over Tasmania. Her 26-16 win over Lyn Triffitt certainly made things more comfortable for WA, although Jackaroo Rebecca van Asch’s come-from-behind effort against rising star Krstic was almost as impressive. Down 8-17 after 14 ends, van Asch limited Krstic to just one shot on the last end to win 22-18. Featherby’s 22-19 win over Kim Saunders ensured WA held sway; 66-57 the final score. 19

Australian Sides Series Championships Sides Series Review Tasmania’s Men balanced the ledger with a comprehensive 67-42 win, the margin set up largely by Mark Strochnetter’s 27-10 triumph over WA’ best performing rink, skipped by Ellul. Mitchell went down 13-25 to Robert McMullen while Adams joined Ellul on three wins for the championships with a 19-15 victory over Lee Schraner.

WA v QLD Ellul finished the Australian Sides Championships on a high with a 21-19 win over Jackaroo Mark Casey. Ellul’s rink was Western Australia’s best performed with four wins and three losses over the four days of intense competition. Rain again played a part in the proceedings after Ellul jumped to 10-1 lead early on, with WA leading on all three rinks. However, with only pride on the line Queensland came storming back as Casey picked up a rare seven while Commonwealth Games medalists Nathan Rice and Brett Wilkie, once in the lead, never looked like surrendering their advantage over Adams and Mitchell respectively. Lead Trystan Smallacombe was a standout and capped a fine tournament while Ellul, too, continued to come up trumps in key moments, ably supported by Luke Richardson and Daniel Patterson.

NSW win Trifecta New South Wales’ Women made it seven wins from seven starts to claim the Marj Morris Trophy for a record fourth-straight time. The NSW Men also got the job done against the Northern Territory but had resigned themselves to a silver medal finish after their loss to South Australia in the penultimate round. However, SA’s shock one-shot loss to the Australian Capital Territory despite maintaining a healthy lead for most of the match, saw NSW win the Alley Shield on a countback of 15 and a half rink wins to 14. • NSW Team.

20

Unfortunately their performance was overshadowed somewhat as Adams went down 13-21 with Mitchell also suffering his fourth loss, 13-25; Queensland convincing 6547 to winners. The news did not get any better on the Women’s side of the draw as Australian captain Lynsey Clarke enjoyed a 19-10 over Featherby. Despite a 13-27 loss, Hastings’ rink comprising Noelene Abe, Linda Warburton and lead Shenayde Heldt finished as WA’s best performed. Krstic led 11-7 halfway through her battle with Jane Bush but the young gun eventually went down 12-23. Queensland’s 6935 win saw them finish the championships in second place.

Best player of the Series New South Wales made a clean sweep of all the major awards on offer as Aron Sherriff’s outstanding form all week inspired his side that included Matthew Baus, Andrew Howie and lead Matthew Miles to the gold medal for the best performed Men’s rink. Natasha Scott’s rink comprising Anne Johns, Ellen Ryan and Kelly Richards were undefeated for the tournament to claim gold for the Women. Krstic and Mitchell, both with two wins and a draw, were able to celebrate individual success having been awarded the Beryl Godfrey and EddyWishart medals as the Best Player of the Australian Sides Championships. Coach Brian Jeppesen was full of praise for Krstic as well as the four debutantes that performed admirably. “It’s pleasing that our first time state representatives, Toni Madigan, Liz Brooke, Robyn O’Brien and Denise Kelly all made a solid team contribution, as did Kristina Krstic who stepped up to Skip a rink for the first time at State level. I congratulations her on winning the Beryl Godfrey Award, as our best player for the series. I also wish to acknowledge and congratulate the retiring Therese Hastings who has been an outstanding state representative and leader within our playing group.” Philosophical in his overall review of the team’s performance, Jeppesen said, “I believe that focusing on the final ladder position of our Women’s Side, as the sole measure of how well they did, in the challenging playing conditions at Yokine, would not be a fair way of measuring their commitment and effort, what they achieved, what they learnt for the future, and how much progress they have made towards rebuilding our Women’s State Side into one that ranks with the nation’s best; in-spite of the challenges of distance and lack of access to regular elite competition. “There were many encouraging aspects of our performance that showed how much talent and ability our side has. The challenge now is to continue to develop greater consistency of performance and to be ‘stronger for longer’ so we stay in every game, end one to 21, and win those games that got away this time.” BowlsWA • Jack Hi • Autumn 2015

Kristina shows outstanding potential

“She could be a world champion!”

“She’s athletic, intelligent and loves the game!” – Therese Hastings.

• Kristina shows the form that won her two Under 25 World Titles.

Kristina Krstic will be pushing for her first full international cap when she takes part in a Bowls Australia trial camp next month. The Manning youngster hopes to round off an outstanding 12 months with selection in the Jackaroo squad after adding the Beryl Godfrey medal as the best player at the Australian Sides Championships to her dual Junior World Championship crowns. Head Coach Steve Glasson said the selection panel’s decision not to name the squad following April’s Sides Series was mainly due to unexpected inclement weather. “The weather gods were not kind to us earlier in the week at Yokine; the greens were simply too slow for us to get the insight of the players that we require,” said Glasson. “The rationale behind the new trial process is to try to ascertain the style of play these players possess, to identify those best suited to our next benchmark events.” Krstic’s 21-17 triumph over recent Australian debutant Chloe Stewart at the Junior (Under 25) World Cup at Broadbeach Bowls Club on the Gold Coast in the blue-ribbon singles event in March has the 20 year-old’s name on everyone’s lips. “She’s athletic, intelligent [and] loves the game,” said her National Training Centre coach Therese Hastings after Krstic had to settle for the silver medal, going down by the same four-shot margin to close friend Stewart back in November. BowlsWA • Jack Hi • Autumn 2015

“She thinks about what she’s doing – she works – listens if I make some suggestions; has got all the shots, plays them all really well [with] beautiful weight control and that’s a real key to bowls. I think she could be a world champion.” Her coach and all her supporters did not have to wait long as Krstic not only turned the tables on Stewart but also teamed with New South Wales’ Ben Twist to defeat New Zealand 18-17 in an exhilarating Mixed Pairs final. Krstic won’t be resting on her laurels as her attention turns to higher honours. She once again exceeded expectations at the National Championships, as a first time State skipper, to win back-to-back Beryl Godfrey medals. The hard work the Australian A representative puts into her training has begun to pay dividends and augurs well for future selection. “Each player will also need to complete some compulsory tasks and requirements prior to the trial camp, which will aid our effort to find the players who are truly committed to Australian representation and will contribute – on and off the green – to the goal of maintaining our position as the world’s number one bowling nation,” Glasson warned while hoping to inspire the next generation to more podium success. With the upcoming Australian Open and then 2018 Commonwealth Games only two of the many big tournaments to land on the Gold Coast, do not be surprised if Kristina Krstic is regularly the headline act. 21

Men’s Pennant Finals

Manning Men build a

champion team Manning Memorial Bowling Club was a buzz on Sunday 29th March as they celebrated a rare double when the Men also claimed the Premier League Pennant to join the Women who had claimed their respective title just ten days earlier. The Manning men who had perhaps bowled in the shadows of the Women’s team for a few years can now claim equal status within the club who is surely a front runner for club of the year honours. Manning had never tasted victory in the Men’s Premier League but had been building over recent years with the addition of some very promising players since gaining promotion to the top flight in 2011/12. Skippers at that time in Aj Heal and Matthew Mitchell were soon joined by some established names in Peter Ker and Steve Withers and the side finished in a creditable fourth place in 2012/13. They performed admirably in the finals winning the semi-final against South Perth before going down to eventual Premiers Osborne Park in the Preliminary final. These matches gave a host of locally developed players a much needed taste of finals experience. In 2013/14 Manning had improve even further and finished the season in second spot however this time they were bundled straight out of the

finals going down to Victoria Park Carlisle and then South Perth who fought out the final. Off that season Manning again looked to bolster their playing stocks as they picked up the talented Matthew Ellul who with young guns Matthew Ayres and Anthony Williams saw Manning take to the greens for the 2014/15 season with one of the youngest sides in the competition. Manning were looking doubtful as final contenders as they headed into last few rounds of the BCiB Pennant Competition. They had just been beaten by the soon to be relegated South Perth and sat in a precarious fifth place, even worse they had to face the last two seasons winners in Victoria Park Carlisle and Osborne Park. Whatever was said in the team meeting before that Round 17 game was perhaps the catalyst for the triumphant season as the team took to the greens over the next five matches against the best teams in the competition and came away winners on every occasion. A 14 shot win over Victoria Park Carlisle set up a virtual elimination final against Osborne Park at Osborne Park on a very slick green which Manning handled superbly winning by 26 shots. • Continued page 25.

Manning Men build a champion team • From page 24.

This year the team had scrapped into the finals by just 3.5 points but were full of confidence. Up against Kardinya in the first semi-final the game was literally over before it began as they raced to a 41-7 lead with the first 20 ends of the contest. Kardinya tried to stage a comeback but never really managed to threaten closing the gap to 24 at the finish. They then faced Cambridge who had put up a good effort against Doubleview but once again the Manning men were right on the jack from the very first bowl. The margin just continued to increase the longer the game went before Cambridge put up the white flag with a massive 51 shot margin. The final was anticipated to be a close affair but many bowls pundits were leaning to Doubleview who had been impressive all year. With a good crowd in attendance the spectators were being treated to some magnificent bowls and the pundits looked to be correct as Doubleview established an 11 shot lead after 25 ends.

“…Manning however, were set for a fight and continued to bowl brilliantly….” Manning however were set for a fight and continued to bowl brilliantly and slowly whittled away the margin. By half way the match was even and both sides took turns in the lead as they went bowl for bowl / shot for shot in a terrific final. As the game started to head into the final stages Manning gained perhaps a lucky break when a miscued drive from Kyle McIlroy who was looking to convert a head being one down with a few second shots saw all the Doubleview bowls go out of the head to leave Manning with six shots and an overall eight shot lead. Manning took full advantage and their skippers continued some brilliant play whenever their side was in danger they were able to kill the end or draw the shot. In the end despite a valiant effort from Doubleview who perhaps would have beaten any other side Manning were just too good on the day and able to hold up the title as Premier League champions. Congratulations to the 16 players from Manning on a terrific achievement in claiming the Premier League title.

Men’s Midweek BCiB Grand Finals

Osborne Park take advantage of home ground Osborne Park made their home-advantage count with an incredibly fast start on their lightening fast greens, as they took a 13-nil lead after just three ends of the Men’s Midweek BCiB Premier League Pennant Final against a stunned South Perth. After 12 ends, the Millers had only managed a solitary shot on each rink and trailed 29-3, as Ketih Guelfi picked up consecutive 4s and Graham Evans another 5. Neville Stevens then added a 3 and a 2 to lead Vinnie Santostefano 12-1 after six ends and the scores were just as unflattering for Greg Reagan and Scott Walker who trailed Guelfi and Evans 13-1 and 11-3 respectively. South Perth won eight of the next nine ends; Walker impressively driving at a lone Saints’ bowl to pick up 4 and suddenly the momentum was with the Millers despite trailing by 17 after 27 ends. That was as close as they would get to Osborne Park as the Saints regained their composure and then punished their opponents who dropped 5s on each rink within a few ends of each other. After two-thirds of the final, Osborne Park led 60-34 which very quickly became 70-34 just as the rain started to fall. The dark skies and overcast conditions would do nothing to dampen the Saints’ bright mood as they thoroughly deserved their virtually unassailable lead and arguably their right to celebrate ahead of schedule. Instead, they waited until after Bowls WA CEO Ken Pride presented them with the Pennant Flag to give their supporters a rousing rendition of the club song, ‘When The Saints Go Marching In’. 25

Women’s Pennant Finals

Manning holds on in close final There was another thrilling finish to the Women’s BCiB Premier League Pennant Final as Manning Memorial Bowling Club held their nerve to stave off a spirited Gosnells side that was looking to cause their third upset in three days. Gosnells were undefeated since their 51-65 loss to Manning in Round 11 on January 6 and their post-Christmas form saw them maintain fourth spot having not been in the four all season until a 51-all draw with Mosman Park in Round 10. Gosnells beat Osborne Park in the penultimate round of the regular home and away season 64-54 and with the heat rule in force the following Tuesday, ensured the two side would match up again in an elimination final. Coincidentally, Manning also enjoyed a ten-shot victory against their semi-final opponents Mosman Park that same day in Round 17. Australian A representative Kristina Krsti lead the way with an 18-11 win over Kerry Andersen, while Helen Morss defeated Beverley Baker 21-19 and Therese Hastings got over the line 18-17 against fellow State Skipper Lisa Featherby. With Krstic on International duty, Rechelle Cole was required to fill those big shoes in the qualifying final and gave a very good account of herself despite going down by just two shots. Hastings and Morss were big winners on the day as the Eagles soared above the Mossies and took a further step to banishing the memory of last year’s heartbreaking grand final loss; 68-47 the final score. Mosman Park’s opponent in the following day’s preliminary final would be Gosnells after the Kookaburra’s and in particular the scintillating form of the Premier League’s best performed skipper

• Manning’s Women team make it a double, winning the BCiB Premier League Pennant Final.

Angela Sharp, proved too strong for the Osborne Park Saints. In Round 17, her 31-12 win over Hailey Adams carried the aggregate despite Anne Crabb and Margaret Anderson going down to Shelley Radcliffe and Pam Chalmers by four and five shots respectively. In the elimination semi-final, Sharp was at her best again defeating Radcliffe 25-14. Anderson got up by one-shot over Shari Solly and although Chalmers beat Crabb 24-20, it was never going to be enough to send the Saints through.

“…the outcome would likely be decided by the experience of Hastings or Crabb.” Instead, Sharp was afforded the opportunity to simply carry on from where she left off the previous day and again she did not disappoint, winning 25-10 over Baker. Not even the home conditions and comforts could stop Gosnells’ momentum with Anderson defeating Andersen 18-13; Featherby’s rink the only winner for Mosman Park as they went down 41-58 and unable to defend their Pennant title. At Victoria Park-Carlisle, it was Gosnells who made the faster start to the Grand Final as they turned up the heat on perennial flag-favourites Manning, leading 16-4 after 12 ends. It did not take long for Manning to settle as Morss and then Hastings nudged in front while Cole fought back get within two of the high-flying Sharp. In a see-sawing battle, Gosnells claimed ten shots from four ends before Manning replied with eight from the next four and regained the lead, 37-34 on 36. Two-thirds of the way through the game the margin was back to one, with Sharp continuing to convert and leading 16-9 (16). Morss was responding in kind, up 1812 (14) and one felt the outcome would likely be decided by the experience of Hastings or Crabb; the score 16-14 (12) in favour of the state skip. Manning led 49-45 on 48 and by as many as eight when youngster Cole showed real fight and strength of character to kill the 20th end twice before combining with her impressive third Robyn O’Brien to pick up three vital shots. • Continued page 27.

Gosnells on song in Saturday Pennant win The four Women’s Saturday BCiB Pennant flags were celebrated in the north, east, south and west after the culmination of 14 home and away rounds (16 in 2nd division) saw some tense knock-out finals with no second chances. There was not much that separated Gosnells and Sorrento all year, as the two sides finished first and second respectively in First Division Red with equal winloss records; Gosnells awarded the minor premiership by virtue of one and half more rink wins. While Gosnells were grateful for the solid Round 5 home victory back in November, last month the two sides drew 35-all at Sorrento, foreshadowing another thrilling match up should the two teams reach the final. Standing in Sorrento’s way was the reigning premiers North Beach, however, Pauline Bourne’s 28-10 win over Elizabeth Brooke more than compensated for Nerrida Porteous’ 14-20 loss to Catherine Sullivan. While in the other semi-final, Gosnells were too strong for Victoria Park-Carlisle with Anne Crabb winning 2612 over Sharyn Mercer and Margaret Anderson by the narrowest of margins 15-14 against Jeanette Davies. Bourne’s rink comprising Wendy Saul, Robyn Van Mosseveld and lead Elizabeth Marshall maintained their good form in the afternoon’s grand final, defeating Anderson and her team of Maureen Dalton, Carolyn Deas and Shirley Roper 12-11 but it was the outstanding Anne Crabb, who skipped the best performed rink all year including Shelley Hickinbotham, Marianne Cameron and Susan Kershaw in the final that made the difference, triumphing 22-17 over the valiant Porteous, Janice Cook, Lily Leach and Sharon Eggers. BowlsWA • Jack Hi • Autumn 2015

Manning holds on… • Continued from page 26.

Sharp and her rink comprising Margaret Dillon, Linda Bryant and lead Loraine Brady were outstanding; a single on the last left them 21-13 winners. Morss, with her second Robyn Jolly in top-form, triumphed 22-16. However, Anderson, who had been cutting down the count all day, also managed singles on her last two ends and suddenly the Kookaburras were trailing by just three with three ends to play. Another two to Crabb setup the grandstand finish, as spectators now sat on the edge of their seats. Hastings, holding one, chose not to play her last bowl on the penultimate end opting instead to defend her side’s slender two-shot advantage. She then literally lay down on the green after her playing her last bowl on the final end while Crabb assessed the head. Laura Merz’s bowl was holding shot, having been rolled once by the unfortunate Shelley Hickinbotham. Crabb had the opportunity to play through the head with two back bowls potentially forcing an extra end or indeed providing the chance of winning the Premier League pennant flag then and there. Hastings was back on her feet along with most of the crowd who held their collective breath as Crabb’s bowl held the correct the line but lacked the sufficient weight to move the jack. The 20-23 score line meant Gosnells had lost by the narrowest of margins. Manning, though thoroughly deserving champions halted their celebrations to commiserate with their courageous opponents; knowing the shared feeling of disappointment and defeat only twelve months prior. 27

Bolton wins O60s final Cambridge’s Ross Bolton outlasted Laurie Johnson (Wanneroo) 2115 in a high quality and entertaining final of the Bowls WA Men’s State Over 60 Singles at the Joondalup Bowling Club. Cambridge players dominated the semi finals which saw Bolton defeat Mohan Lal (Cambridge) 21-15, while Johnson defeated Cliff Wooldridge (Cambridge) 21-13. • Ross Bolton (Cambridge) in action.

Boys from the bush take O60s Pairs An unheralded country pairing has upset some more fancied city teams to claim the Men’s Over 60’s Pairs with the finals played at Osborne Park Bowling Club on Wednesday 16th February. Collie’s Ross White hadn’t been playing much bowls but decided to try his hand at the event partnering with good friend Geoff Twist from Eaton and came up trumps. The country pairing fancied the unenviable task of playing former WA rep Gary Caffell in the opening round of sectional round and came out with a draw and followed up with two more wins to take the section. The Country pairing just got better as the tournament progressed, a 20-6 win over the Port Bouvard side skipped by Graham Nottle was followed by a closer 15-11 victory over the composite side Milan Jokic and Ron Hutchinson before a quarter final 19-12 win over the Fremantle pair of John Rimmer and Jim Rawlinson which advanced them to the final day of competition. In the semi-final White and Twist played beautifully to once again record a comfortable win, this time it was 21-13 over the Thornlie pair of Mike Halliday and Peter Freund. The other semi final was a local affair with two Osborne Park sides squaring off. In the end the spritely 79yo Dante Mariani with Geoff Mills came up trumps winning 19-11 • Collie’s Ross White and Geoff Twist. over Keith Guelfi and Lionel Bell. The final was a ripping contest with all four players contributing with some great draw bowls. White and Twist gained a slender lead early in the contest and were always able to hold a margin throughout the contest. In the end it proved vital and Mariani and Mills did their best right to the end but just came up short on the last end with the final score 16-15. 30

Huckson was a big 26-9 winner over Lily Rughoobur (Innaloo) in the semi finals while Hartland had the tougher task of overcoming Western Australian legend Lee Poletti (Geraldton) in the semis as well as Beverly Baker (Mosman Park) in the quarter final and recently-retired state skip Kathy Gobbart (Gingin) in the alignment round.

‘Save the Bayswater BAYSWATER Bowling Club is proving that the use of Social Media and word of mouth, can be ultraeffective in getting new people, and members into bowls clubs. A local social open day attracted 350 people and over 100 kids to the Club…here’s how it came together… In January, Bayswater member Steve Lay decided it was time to do something to get the Bayswater community back involved with their local club. Membership was stagnant, or dropping and a re-invigoration of the club was required to see it survive into the future. After a short but productive discussion between Steve and Regional Bowls Manager Clive Adams, it was full steam ahead in arranging the ‘Save the Bayswater Bowling Club day on 15th February 2015. With a focus on engaging the local community, Steve went about organising a bouncy castle for the kids, a local caterer to provide delicious food and a local family oriented band to provide the entertainment. For the on-green entertainment the use of the new Junior Jack Attack equipment obtained via Bowls Australia was

32

crucial in having enough equipment for the kids to have a go at our great game in a safe supervised environment. The soft rubberised bowls, especially designed for kids, but useable by all, are the perfect way for everyone to have a go at the same time. The modified games, as well as the great scoring wedge where players can score points for rolling the bowls into marked holes, provide fun and frivolity for all. Next came the promotion of the event. Social media was decided as the main promotional tool, and provided people were willing to share the promotional posts, it was seen as the quickest and most cost efficient way of getting to people quickly. Undoubtedly, in a close knit community, word of mouth was also a key promotional tool. The response Steve and the Club obtained was overwhelming to say the least. A small entry fee for the afternoon (from 3pm to 7pm) covered the entertainment provided as well as social membership of the Club, with most of the 350 people in attendance signing up on the spot. A follow-up social day on the 15th March saw an attendance of nearly 200 people, with 80 of those people new, not having attended in the previous month. Again, the promotion was handled purely using Social Media. The Club Facebook page now has nearly 650 followers, and now not only runs Sunday sessions, but also Friday Faves where it provides great food options for everyone that goes along. The Club is going to continue the Friday Faves throughout winter and has built a good fan base for it to continue to be popular. The Club is now also in a position to put out invites for functions or to simply come to the Club to watch the footy, all quite simply and easily, knowing that at least 650 people will see it in an instant – much easier and much more effective than letterbox drops!

BowlsWA • Jack Hi • Autumn 2015

Bowling Club Day’ There are plans afoot to organise a “street-based” Jack Attack style concept to capitalise of the local rivalries and make coming to play bowls an interesting and competitive experience. Facebook, and other forms of Social Media, are crucial tools for Clubs to get a handle on for promotion. A social media or communications co-ordinator is a role that needs to be filled by someone with good skills in this area, and there are courses available, often run by city councils, where people can get training and expand their knowledge of these tools. Facebook enables people to ask questions and obtain feedback easily and efficiently. It enables Clubs to clarify misconceptions and perhaps fix issues that might otherwise prevent people from coming back. It’s better to know what is being said out there rather than be unaware. Steve is happy to share his story and help other Clubs achieve. For more information, please contact Regional Bowls Manager Clive Adams.

Facebook Posts by people who attended the event… Another gorgeous afternoon at the country pub in the burbs... Great day thanks all, awesome job! Was a great day. Would love to see this happen more often! We had a great time at the Sunday-sundowner. The kids had a ball with the bowls and the jumpy castle, we enjoyed the setting, atmosphere and the great DJ and good value food. It would be great if either your website or Facebook page could let everyone know your opening days and times, as well as what is available eg coffees, snacks, dinner, social bowls. We are hoping to come down Friday arvo with the kids. Keep up the good work! Loved the kids bowling aids!!! What a great arvo! Hoping the baysie bowling club can become the local Sunday sesh. Food, tunes and amazing community atmosphere...bravo baysie! Thank you to all for arranging such a well organised, family fun day. I look forward to the next one to keep raising dollars for our local bowls club. ‘Twas a super delightful afternoon spent at Save the Bayswater Bowling Club! We are excited to be members and hope to have many more relaxing Sunday afternoons sipping G&T’s on the green! Well done to the organisers- we are keen to see more events like this in the future! Thanks for a terrific afternoon. Boy what a happening place. We had such fun thanks everyone! Can’t wait for the next one. Bowls is a great game.

Pingelly win back to back Pennants Ecstatic in the previous two seasons after bringing home the pennant flag after a 41 year drought, who would have believed Pingelly would do it again this year and complete a trifecta of wins? Pingelly sitting second on the ladder played the first final of 21 ends against third place Wickepin and won the game 64 shots + 4½ points to their 54 shots + 1½ points. Pingelly then played Brookton who were top of the ladder and won the final game with a remarkable 73-32 margin and a clean sweep of rink wins This will certainly go into the books as a wonderful achievement for the Pingelly Bowling Club. A ‘quiet’ celebration was enjoyed at Williams and then back at the club for a bit of yahoo and further celebration and a customary article of clothing (a bit brighter and bigger this year!) was hoisted up the flagpole as part of this great achievement!

• Back row: Gwenda Andrews , Terry James, Wilma Warburton, Middle: Robin Narducci, Darralyn Page, Eileen McCahon, Eileen Smith. Front: Sue Lee, Halina Weinart, Jenny Wiles, Marg Ryan, Trish Williams, Peta Paterson.

Denison ladies combine to make history

• The First Division Pennant Winners, their first since 1992.

All players had indifferent bowls, but the standard was worthy of a final and the many vocal supporters of both sides were not disappointed, as toucher after toucher was produced. The game was played in good spirit and despite the loss, all the Geraldton ladies accepted the defeat as it should be and were most gracious and genuinely pleased for the home team.

First Division Team D. Reudavey, J. Ilich, J. Bavcevich, P. Belcher, D. Hobbs, G. Kempton, A. Labruyere, E. Vermeer, D. Dellamotte, L. Joyce, W. Eaton, A. Doy.

Second Division Team W. Hahn, S. Ferguson, P. Crockett, K. Williamson, V. Baskerville, S. Thompson, J. Murray, S. Crabb.

ANYTIME ANYWHERE

Although the Second Division Pennant team has won three finals in recent years, the First Division has not had a success since 1992, but that was changed when the 2014/5 since was concluded. The finals held at the Denison BC resulted in both the home clubs being successful. The two local teams finished thrid and fourth on the ladder and then produced ‘playoff’ form, to win quarter and semi-finals to meet the Geraldton Gold teams in both divisions. Geraldton were certainly favourites to capture the titles, but bowls being bowls, upsets came and neither teams could claim the victory till the last bowl of each division came to a halt. Tears flowed and jubilation on the green was shown, when both Denison teams were victorious. No names mentioned, but for some of the long standing bowlers, it was their first success and also a feather in the cap of a first year bowler.

It will always be Joan’s kitchen “As a mark of respect Sorrento held a very well attended memorial service for Joan in the clubhouse. There were glowing tributes from close friends and officials interaction…” The old adage, “if you can’t stand the heat get out of the kitchen”, never applied to Joan Witham. In fact the busier things became at the eastern end of the Sorrento Bowling Club the more Joan warmed to the task. It was that way for more than two decades at Sorrento and the number of appetites she satisfied is unfathomable. But, sadly, Joan died recently at the age of 87 and the club is very much poorer for her passing. Just a couple of weeks before her death Joan directed proceedings at a club gala day and, as usual, the proof of her efficiency in the kitchen was in the eating. The rough mathematics, based on the number of plates of sandwiches served up at functions, invitation and gala days, country week and Saturday pennants, was closing in on 5000 loaves of bread alone. Throw in the fillings, sumptuous salads and assorted goodies prepared by Joan and her reliable band of helpers and you could feed an Army. Then there was the task she shared with three others, including the unglamorous job of peeling onions, before Tuesday night’s corporate bowls. But hard work and helping others was always the way Joan operated. Born in Hamilton, New Zealand, on the 21st of January,1928, Joan was sent to live on a farm with an aunty at the age of five following the break-up of her parents’ marriage. It wasn’t long before Joan was out picking blackberries and helping to manually milk the farm’s dairy cattle.

• Marie Smart (left) and Annie tylor (centre) with Joan Witham.

After three years of secondary school Joan got a job smocking, which paid the princely sum of a shilling an inch. Soon after Joan met Cedric, who lived on a nearby farm, and was married at the age of 20. Joan and Cedric raised three sons and two daughters, three of whom later moved to Australia and implored their parents to join them. Fortunately for Sorrento they decided to join the club in the early 1990s. “There was always someone in the kitchen when I got here, so I used to go in there and help because I like helping – I am not a sitter,” she once said Joan also kept her hand in at bowling and in 1996-97, along with Beryl Withell, May Leyland and Mavis Gledhill, won the Sorrento ladies’ fours. Until recently she skippered a Sorrento team in the division four red competition on Tuesdays. Prior to Saturday’s pennants Joan would hit the supermarket and purchase and cart all the ingredients necessary to put somewhere around 38 plates of sandwiches on the table. She prepared the curried egg mixture at home on Friday night before she and three able assistants, each sticking to one ingredient, made a proverbial mountain of sandwiches. That’s after wiping down all the tables. Not that all Joan’s hard work and the associated revenue raising for the club didn’t go unappreciated. In 2005 Joan was made a life member of Sorrento, an honour bestowed on only 18 individuals and just five ladies since 1991. Sadly, Joan lost one of her daughters to cancer but doted on her 10 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren. As a mark of respect Sorrento held a very well attended memorial service for Joan in the clubhouse. There were glowing tributes from close friends and officials. But while their wonderful words will fade over time, there emerged one aspect of the service which will be enduring. The unveiling of a new sign which now hangs over the area where Joan spent an unbelievable amount of her time said it all…Joan’s Kitchen.

Friedman Lurie Singh & D'Angelo YOUR SMART LAWYERS

How we can help when you go to Court…

Friedman Lurie Singh & D’Angelo

In a democracy, we champion our rights to have access to the Courts, and express confidence in its workings to give fair, reasoned and transparent judgments. Indeed, having access to justice is seen as a fundamental right of any Australian. But unlike death and taxes, it is not a forgone conclusion one will encounter Court action during their lifetime. Being involved in a Court action fills anyone with tension and angst. The Court buildings seem imposing, the judges are stern and intimidating, the Court process requires many complicated procedures and documents to be filed within strict deadlines, the paperwork uses complex language, the process may take months or years, and the sums paid for Court applications and lawyers’ fees are high. The emotional and mental stress one faces when going through a Court action often clouds judgement and decisionmaking. Even more stressful is the possibility that one could say or do the wrong thing, by which one could lose thousands or millions of dollars, property or have one’s rights restricted, that need not have happened if you had known what to say or do. At Friedman Lurie Singh & D’Angelo, our lawyers are keenly aware of this and its impact on you. Our lawyers will be with you at every step of the way. We explain the Court processes to you, discuss what possible outcomes may result, the way to work towards each of these outcomes and the related costs. We will advise you on completing the correct forms, and ensure they contain suitable content, be it affidavits, initiating applications, responses to applications, witness statements and others. Having the correct information clearly and concisely set out will greatly assist your case and speed up the process, thus saving you money. We will ensure the forms are submitted to the Court within the required deadlines. The Courts will often require you to make an appearance, to ‘take the stand’. We will check for and inform you of the Court location and time for your appearance, and who the presiding judge is. Having a well-trained lawyer at this stage is very reassuring and critically important to ensure your rights are protected. We will advise you on what to avoid that may hinder or even prejudice your case. We will accompany you to Court, make submissions to the Court on your behalf and set the stage for you to maximise progress on your matter, in your best interests. BowlsWA • Jack Hi • Autumn 2015

Your opponent will have their opportunity to present their case. We will advise you on what its effects are on your case, present you with options and comply with your reasonable instructions. In this way, we will take reduce your stress by handling these matters on your behalf. We will explain to youthe effect of what has is or has happened, which enables you to maintain greater objectivity over the Court process. This will ensure you will not be intimated by the Court procedures. During the Court process, there may be an offer of settlement (whereby one party offers the other party a sum of money, or to perform, or cease to perform certain actions, in exchange for ending the Court action). Depending on your instructions, we can also make an offer to the opposing side on your behalf, or consider such an offer from the opposing side. It is sometimes tempting to accept the offer so as to end the risk ,stress, hassle and costs as quickly as possible. We will advise you about the effects of accepting or rejecting such offers, and the effect of the terms of the offer. This advice will enable you to make an informed decision about whether to accept or reject the proposed terms, or to propose terms more suitable to you. Our advice will enable you to be more objective, and not be pressured or rushed into a settlement. If a settlement is reached, we will advise you on the difference between discontinuing the action and dismissal of the action, which have different effects of your rights in the future. Going through the Court processes is an important method of protect your rights. Do not short-change yourself by taking the apparently more attractive (cheaper) route doing it yourself. Contrary to the common view, money spent on good representation will help to achieve your desired outcomes, which may affect you for the rest of your life. Death and taxes, two sure things

• Ruth and David Watson from Mandurah.

Almost a Lifetime David and Ruth Watson have achieved an amazing feat at the Mandurah Bowling and Recreation Club. They are both entering their 58th year of membership. Dave advised when they joined in 1957 they were aged in their early twenties. The population of the town was under 2000 at that time. The Club house was a 12 foot by 10 foot unlined shed located on the block currently occupied by the Mandurah City Council. The club had one bowling green with 50 to 60 members. To boil the kettle an extension cord was run from the greenkeepers connection on a power pole. The men and women each had their own Presidents and committees. The Sunday bowls competitions were slotted in around the hotel sessions of 12-1pm and 5-6pm. A lot of the players usually walked to the Peninsular Hotel for refreshments between games. The pennant competition was played among teams from Mandurah, Pinjarra, Waroona, Yarloop and Harvey. The ladies made the afternoon tea. The club then moved to Allnutt Street in 1958 on a block supplied to the council as public open space from the France Brothers who developed the area. The members built the club by giving personal guarantees for the bank loan of 6000 pounds together with an interest free loan from the council of 1000 pounds. Then in 2011 the club moved to the new site on the corner of Allnutt Street and Dower Road. They have both been very active and loyal members of the club over the years with many hours given through volunteering. Dave received life membership in 1993, and Ruth in 2008. Dave has been the club patron since 2005. Ruth does not play bowls very often now but Dave still plays Night Owl Bowls and the occasional social game. We hope they keep being involved for many years to come. 38

After saving so hard for so long, wouldn’t it be comforting to know exactly where your superannuation savings will go if you don’t last the distance? A common misconception is that a superannuation death benefit forms part of a deceased estate, and is therefore distributed in accordance with the Will of the deceased. Because superannuation savings are held in trust by a super fund, and not personally owned, distribution of super proceeds may be at the discretion of the super fund trustee. One way of ensuring your super is distributed in accordance with your wishes is to make a valid binding death benefit nomination, which will override the discretion of the trustee. One of the risks with binding nominations is that members may forget to change their nominations if their circumstances or relationships change. As an example, a client of mine was horrified recently when I noted that their considerable super savings were nominated to go her ex husband, from whom she was going through an acrimonious divorce. Another risk is that as binding nominations often expire after three years, they may expire without action being taken to renew. Another consideration is that superannuation death benefits are only payable in accordance with superannuation law, generally to the dependents of the deceased or to their estate. Eligible dependents include the spouse of the deceased, children of any age, financial dependents and a person who had an interdependency relationship. An interdependency relationship can include having a close personal relationship, living together, or providing domestic or financial support by either person. As in life, tax is a consideration in death when it comes to superannuation death benefits. A key consideration is to understand how different beneficiaries of super benefits may be taxed differently. A super benefit paid will generally include a ‘tax free’ component and a ‘taxable’ component. A tax free component will generally arise from any after tax contributions made to a superannuation account, whereas the taxable component will include contributions for which a tax deduction has been claimed, together with accumulated earnings. A life insurance benefit may be considered an “untaxed” component if premiums for the policy have been paid through super and a tax deduction claimed by the fund. Any superannuation death benefit is tax free if received by a tax dependent, such as a surviving spouse, children under age 18, financial dependents, and those with an interdependency relationship. Otherwise, the taxable component of a lump sum benefit may be taxed at 16.5% and any untaxed benefit taxed at 31.5%. If superannuation is paid as an income stream, or pension, it is possible to nominate a reversionary beneficiary whom could continue to receive the income tax free under certain circumstances. After working hard to accumulate a meaningful super balance it would be nice to know the proceeds would end up going where you wish, and that the tax man doesn’t get more than he should. There are legitimate strategies to reduce the taxable component of a super balance, and therefore any tax payable by adult children on inherited super. As always it may pay to seek professional advice. CARNARVON

Story and photos by Brian Hooper

– a bowler’s dream

Laurel and Brian returned to Carnarvon to enjoy the relaxed Carnarvon caravan/ motor-home lifestyle in June/July/August playing lawn bowls six times at the Wintersun Caravan Park. Regular competitions (social and competitive) are held attracting strong fields. Players are invited to wear their club uniforms adding to the carnival atmosphere. Checking the number plates on cars one evening we found visitors from all over Australia and a strong contingent from West Australia. Some bowlers take off for a spot of boat and rod before the afternoon bowling events, while the girls attend craft and fitness classes and shopping in the town. Sausage sizzles on Thursday nights and a Sunday night roast with sweets A local guitarist struts his stuff including a sing along to Country and Western music. Men wearing coloured checked shirts and gals wearing Dolly Parton styled blouses (and jeans) added to the country atmosphere. It is amazing, a bit of toe tapping music for the old farts and they turn into teenage rockers. The roof of the recreation room started to rock with popular songs such as The Pub with no Beer, I’ll walk the line and a medley of Slim Dusty, I still call Australia home. Can’t wait till next week’s sing-a-long, must polish up my R M Williams. Saturday markets have an assortment of trinkets, jams and bric-a brac. The drawcard is the five stalls of fresh fruit and vegetable run by the local Vietnamese community. Young sons and daughters watched over by parents weigh the produce adding up and handing out change all with beaming white smiles. In the cool of the morning we walked the one mile jetty (two miles return) now 117 years old, located just south of the old whaling station. Children love the trip on board the train locally known as the Coffee Pot. I call it the rattler as it shakes and rattles out along old creaky timber structure. About sixty kilometres north of Carnarvon is the famous blowholes. The weather report looked favourable with twenty five knot winds from the south west and swells to three metres.

• Carnarvon is abundant with wildlife.

Sea spray drifted over the car park as yellow poncho clad visitors ventured near the edge of the cliff. Every few minutes five to seven metre columns of sea spray shot skyward through honey-combed limestone cliffs giving an awesome display of nature’s power. Back at the Wintersun Caravan Park every morning at about six we were greeted with the voice of a black and white butcherbird sitting alone high in a tree singing his beautiful flute like melodic tune. Carnarvon has a temperate year round climate and is a wonderful place to spend some time especially during Perth’s cooler months.

Wintersun Caravan Park welcomes bowlers from all abilities with many people learning to bowl in a relaxed environment… • International size 8 rink grass green which runs at a consistent 14-16 seconds • Daily social bowls with prizes each day • Carnivals with great cash prizes (June 22-26, July 20-24, August 17-21)

• Social Events throughout the season…come along and meet some new friends. • Grassed powered sites, new amenities, ensuite chalets.

Triple deadheat at Women’s Country Week With points awarded to winners, runner ups and equal thirds in each discipline, the final tally of the points is close each year, however, not usually as close as it was this year; a three-way tie between Capel, Corrigin and Dudley Park.

Abe does it again in Singles With victory eluding her in the pairs, it was time for Capel’s Bev Scott to take to the green for the Singles title against last year’s champion Noelene Abe (Corrigin). Hoping to get a fast start after already being on the green in the previous game, Scott took singles on the first two ends. However, Abe quickly got into gear and scored on the next three ends to take a 4-2 lead. End for end the two ladies went, with first Scott getting closer than Abe stretching the lead to four. A two to Abe on the fifteenth end saw her advantage reach six. Scott hit back again and finally drew level at 17-17. A couple of wonderful sit and stay shots by Scott set up a number of opportunities to get some late numbers and put the pressure but as Abe has done her whole career, she responded with last bowl draw shots to either get shot or cut the score down to one. A closely drawn three to Abe put her within one of victory before quickly grabbing the winning shot the next end to defend her Country Week Women’s Singles title.

Geraldton pair victors over Capel girls Geraldton’s Lee Poletti has been a wonderful contributor to the game of lawn bowls in Western Australia but not far behind her is Bev Scott from Capel. The Pairs Final was set up for a great contest between two ladies who have played a lot of bowls together in State Sides and at State Championships and against each other at countless Country Week events. Scott and partner Suellen Payne started the contest strongly and led three nil and 4-3 after six ends. However, Poletti and her partner Jill Adam are no strangers to recent country week finals, having won the Fours title together last year. Three singles settled them down before grabbing a three to take the lead on the eighth end. A two saw Poletti a 9-4 up and looking strong before the Capel pairing turned the momentum around. A run of four consecutive ends had Scott back on level terms and looking the likely winner. But with four ends to play, Poletti and Adam put together a decisive fourteenth end, scoring four shots and then followed that up with a single on the next end to lead 14-9 with two ends to play. With the chips down and the title almost out of reach, Scott and Payne made one more charge for the line picking up their own four shots to trail by just one. Poletti stepped up to draw a close bowl just behind the jack while Scott’s last bowl went wide of the head to give Poletti and Adam a 17-13 victory.

• Jill Adam and Lee Poletti over the moon after winning the Pairs.

Experienced Dudley Park win Country Week Fours On the very quick Osborne Park greens, the Fours final was a game of extreme concentration with any error of weight or line punished by the breeze blowing down the green. Roma Dunn, Julie Lindsay, Peg Currie and Jenni Rogalski (Dudley Park) entered the final as the more experienced team with Dunn, Lindsay and Currie three-time winners of this event but the Boulder team of Irene Leahy, Lorraine Pettit, Christine Ace-Watson and Gail Fissioli was full of confidence after a terrific tournament thus far. The Boulder side started the contest well by winning the first two ends and leading three nil before the Dudley Park foursome got into gear winning the next four ends, including a four on the fourth, to lead 8-3. A pair of twos to Leahy closed the gap to 8-9 after ten ends and both teams were well and truly in the contest. Consecutive singles to Dunn followed by a potentially game-winning three on the thirteenth put Dudley Park in the box seat with only two ends to play. Boulder responded with a couple, giving them some hope; four shots behind going into the last end. However, with the wealth of high-level experience in the Dudley Park team they were not about to let a lead slip and gladly settled for single to win the Country Week Fours Championship 15-10. Singles Winner Noelene Abe (Corrigin) def. Bev Scott (Capel) 21-17. Pairs Winners Lee Poletti, Jill Adam (Dalwallinu) def. Bev Scott and Suellen Payne (Capel) 17-13. Fours Winners Roma Dunn, Julie Lindsay, Peg Currie and Jennie Rogalski (Dudley Park) def. Iren Leahy, Lorraine Pettit, Chrstine AceWatson and Gail Fissioli (Boulder) 15-10. “The Latham members are now using their Evergreen surface and are very impressed, the carpet is running about 16 seconds and we cannot find any faults with the surface. The paving Evergreen put around the green really finishes everything off. Mark Frazer kept in contact with us during and after the construction. The project was finished on time and I would recommend Evergreen to anyone, they take a lot of pride with their work and are easy to get on with.” – PETER WATERHOUSE (Club President)

“After over twelve months of research, our decision to replace our carpet greens with Evergreen Ultra Plus was easy. The installation was on time and budget with the attention to detail amazing. The commitment to perfection by Mark and his team was as we expected – great. The greens have only been completed a few weeks and already we are enjoying the smooth true surface. Great job!” – BARBARA HOUGH (Project Officer/Vice President)
