Welcome to this edition of Jack Hi The bowls season of 2019/20 finished ahead of schedule in the most dramatic circumstances as the global pandemic known as Coronavirus (Covid-19) caused a Government directed shut down of clubs and bowling activities nation-wide. Bowls WA thanks all clubs for following these directives and understands these will now be challenging times ahead for everyone. We are hopeful as a community we can come together, support each other and emerge back as a sport that will continue to be played well into the future. Apart from Coronavirus this season has seen a few other challenges at Association level with the roll out of a new Bowls Link system and an unexpected freak storm causing flooding to our headquarters resulting in considerable staff hours away from standard duties. As a result this Jack Hi is the first since last October but now serves as something of a year book covering all events through-out the season. Stay safe everyone and I look forward to seeing you on the greens once we emerge from our off season of isolation.

Take care and look forward to the future As I write this column, with bowling clubs closed due to the Corona virus, I can but reflect on the season that was, and encourage members to take care, look after loved ones and look to a future not too far away when we will all be once again privileged to play and enjoy our sport. Much has happened around the greens since the beginning of the season with some highlights: • BWA sponsors BCIB generously supported the association with a Triples event in August with competitions held at the Cockburn and Bunbury Bowling Clubs. With coaching sessions in conjunction with the tournament, bowlers had the opportunity to develop their skills as well as vie for some generous prize money. • The Sorrento BC held the inaugural Dynamic Mixed Master Fours in late September with a strong field participating. • Jack East returned from the Under 18 Nationals with a Gold medal in the Singles. • The National Champion of Champions was held in Perth in October. Thanks to the South Perth BC who provided wonderful hospitality in hosting this event. The standard of bowls was exceptional, and it was disappointing that there was not more spectator support. Thanks to all the volunteers, officials and Sue Hogg, Tournament Director, for their hard work in ensuring the success of this major event for WA. • A Sets Play format was introduced for Men’s Thursday pennants. There has been mixed reaction to the format, with a post-Christmas adjustment made to roll-up conditions. • The Perth Suns, having played so well in November, again represented our State in the BPL for honours in February. A South Perth team won the 2019 National BPL Cup. • Noelene Abe was selected to represent Australia in the inaugural Over 60s Trans Tasman team. • The Hong Kong Youth team visited Perth in January and enjoyed the hospitality of local clubs. • A successful fundraiser for Bushfire Relief was held at the South Perth BC, with teams from north and south of the river in opposition. Newly appointed BWA ambassador Brad Hogg was a representative of the southern team. • The Men’s Inter Zone Fours was held in Kellerberrin in February, with a successful Country Week following in early March. Unfortunately Women’s Country Week and the Inter Zone event due to be played in April have been cancelled.

Additions to the Board Lee Bunney (North Beach) and more recently Doug Kelly (Meckering) have been appointed to the Board. BWA welcomes their expertise and I wish them an enjoyable and fulfilling term.

Bowls Link There has been a lot happening behind the scenes with the introduction of Bowls Link. Aaron Delaporte has done an enormous amount of work towards helping clubs to familiarise themselves with the program, including extensive travel to regional areas with RBM Clive Adams, Steve Unsworth and BA’s Kelvin Rogers. We are indeed fortunate to have such dedicated staff. This program is being built specifically for bowlers and is a welcome addition to our game.

Variety our new Charity Partner Variety – the Children’s Charity has been nominated as BWA’s new charity partner. As a community based sport, we look forward to supporting children in need.

Club Information Conference The Inaugural Club Information Conference gave members the opportunity to engage with experts on essential topics for clubs. Those in attendance were impressed with the programme of presentations and we expect participation to increase in future years.

Information available on our website Although the BWA office is closed with staff working from home, information for club committees is on the website and flowing via email. It is important that clubs maintain communication with BWA and the Regional Bowls Managers. With the enforced closures, our clubs will suffer, however the health and wellbeing of our members must be a priority. BWA will work to guide clubs towards the financial opportunities available through stimulus packages which have been announced. The annual President’s and Ladies’ Forums will be conducted via email, with some important matters for discussion. Arrangements for the AGM will be decided depending on circumstance leading into July. I wish you all good health and I look forward to seeing you on the greens again soon.

Testing times ahead These are testing times for all of us as we struggle to make sense of what has occurred over the past several weeks; it is likely that we will all view our lives ahead slightly differently. The role of Bowls WA whilst these tough restrictions are in place are quite clear… • To wherever possible continue to provide advice to our clubs so that they may survive the current health and financial crisis. This predominantly will be to forward critical information directly to the clubs when issued by health authorities and/or the government at whatever level, so that it is not lost in the maze of information being distributed at present and • Ensure that our people remain safe. Clearly government is making those decisions very clear, but we must continue to be mindful of staff, volunteers and committee members. The time will come when this will all pass and we must ensure when that time comes all our people are back on board and ready to get back to 'normal'. As a result, it is likely that our office will close completely; at the time of writing we were on a skeleton staff with no visitors permitted – even that may have ramped up to a completely closed office. If this is the case communication channels via phone and email will remain open, both to staff and our RBMs.

Forthcoming meetings Clearly with the current restrictions, meetings such as the Annual Forums and Annual General Meeting will not occur as usual. The Forums in particular will proceed we hope in some fashion, with important discussions on Affiliation Fee changes and Events, such as Midweek Pennant required. We will endeavour to keep clubs up to date on various electronic mediums to be used in place of the standard meeting format. At this time the dates remain as previously forwarded.

Men’s Pennant Regretfully the final two rounds (Saturday) and final round (Midweek) were forced to be abandoned. Currently we are finalising our position on promotions, demotions and pennant outcomes.

There are many options but it is only appropriate given we have 'finished' the Home and Away matches that we look to follow the Conditions of Play as set out at the commencement of the season as closely as is possible. The obvious top up and bottom down scenario is straightforward, the Promotion and Challenge finals a little more complicated given we have no idea when we may be able to return to the green. For midweek it is unlikely that we will find two weeks to play those fixtures, particularly given they would need to be played in September, without the knowledge of whether grass greens would even be available. Similarly the awarding of a pennant is unlikely given some of the difficulties to be faced. Whatever the outcome we will endeavour to make it as fair as able given the circumstances.

Ladies Pennants On a much brighter note congratulations to the ladies pennant winners and promotions for our Tuesday competition and to Bedford for sneaking in a Friday Night flag. All winners are to be congratulated but certainly special mention to the Manning BC girls whose Premier League record is quite outstanding – with no respite for clubs in sight yet! It was a disjointed Grand Final Day but everyone understood and it was always played in great spirit.

Annual Dinner and Awards Night With the closing of Crown Perth and the various crowd regulations in place, the Awards Dinner will clearly not proceed in its current form. There is a possibility that a simpler, smaller evening can occur later in the year, perhaps September, to recognise our high achievers for the season. It was after all 90% completed. Further information on the various club, coach and volunteer awards will be forwarded shortly if not already done so. Finally, these are unprecedented times for all of us let alone the sport. Keep in contact with friends who may be doing it tough in isolation whether by social media or a simple phone call, as is being said, we are all in this together!

2019 National Bowling Arm Championships

• All States – 2019 Opening Ceremony at Tranmere Bowling Club SA.

The 2019 National Bowling Arm Championships were hosted at Tranmere Bowling Club in Adelaide, South Australia, from September 9 to 12. Tranmere was an excellent host club with three terrific greens and a surplus of 100 volunteers who worked tirelessly to provide a warm environment, well maintained greens, excellent meals and a wealth of local history.

This event pits State versus State vying for individual Shields as well as honouring overall Winners and Runner Ups at a National level. The format is a State Side of 18 players who rotate through sectional play of Fours + Singles and Pairs + Triples. The only condition on Side selection is the requirement of two female players, otherwise there is no restriction including age.

New Side format by Laurie reaps benefits WA has been involved for three years having played in 2017 at Moama NSW coming last, then in 2018 at East Maitland NSW placing 5th, now in 2019 the Side has improved tremendously (using a newly developed Side format created by WA Coordinator Laurie Blurton) coming in 3rd and winning 3 of 5 available Shields against Queensland, South Australia and Tasmania! The two States ahead of them were Victoria in first (winners since the inception of this event) and New South Wales in second.

State Bowling Arm Champion Shield postponed to 2021 At a special presentation during the Closing Ceremonies WA’s inaugural 2019 State Bowling Arm Champion Shield, sponsored by Warnbro Bowling Club, was presented – congratulations to winner Laurie Blurton! A huge thank you to Warnbro Bowling Club for sponsoring this Shield and being selected as the 2020 host club. Planning was in advanced stages for the 2020 event when the COVID-19 Pandemic arrived in Australia. As a result, the 2020 event has been postponed until 2021 in Western Australia at the Warnbro Bowling Club from September 6 to 10. Bowls WA and Warnbro Bowling Club are proud to be hosting this event and look forward to welcoming the other states across the Nullarbor!

Laws of The Sport of Bowls As playing Umpires used in Pennant games where the home side provides the Umpire of the Day, we are sometimes called to adjudicate upon incidents that rely upon the description/s of the situation to arrive at a fair decision. It is particularly important to assume the 'Umpire's hat' and act without bias in such cases. An example given by the World Bowls Law Committee was an instance where the Umpire was called to resolve an issue of whether a bowl which came to rest in the ditch was a 'toucher' or not as the opposing teams could not agree. Of course, being a player, the Umpire did not see the bowl being played. When the Umpire checked the bowl, he found that it was not chalked and removed it from the ditch. The side who played the bowl and thought it was a toucher said they did not get the opportunity to chalk the bowl because of the dispute. What action should be taken if there is a dispute on whether a bowl touched the jack or not?

Laws of the Sport The skips must decide whether a bowl is dead or not as per Law 17.3 and if they cannot reach agreement they must ask the umpire to make a decision which, of course, must be in line with the Laws of the Sport – Duties of the Umpire Law 43.2.5 However, as in this situation, the Umpires not having seen the bowl played, must use common sense and a spirit of fair play to decide the appropriate course of action (the Introduction section of the Foreword to the Laws of the Sport refers). Umpire’s Approach: The WB Laws Committee’s approach to dealing with the dispute referred to in this query was as follows. The umpire should: 1. Ask both teams individually to describe the path of the bowl in question from its delivery to coming to rest in the ditch (starting with the team which was in possession of the rink when the bowl was delivered). 2. Identify those aspects of the descriptions on which the skips agree and confirm these with them. 3. Identify those aspects of the descriptions on which the skips disagree and confirm these with them, 4. Gather evidence to support both skips’ descriptions of the aspects on which there is disagreement – such as grounds to believe the jack was moved; how close both teams were to the jack when the bowl was in its course and so on. (Note: the views of spectators should not be taken into account – who are unlikely be unbiased and, in any case, Law 45.3 prevents them from advising the players.) 5. Check whether, in the light of the information gathered in points 1-4, the skips are now able to reach agreement? 6. Make and explain what their decision will be – based on the evidence available and the relevant Laws of the Sport. 8

Umpire's Decision 1. If the outcome of the umpire’s approach is that there is now agreement between the skips, the umpire should declare the bowl to be either dead or live in line with that agreement. 2. If the outcome of the umpire’s approach is that there is still no agreement between the skips, the umpire should decide as follows: (a) If the bowl has neither been marked nor nominated as a toucher and further bowls have been played after it came to rest, the umpire should declare the bowl dead (Law 15.3). (b) If the bowl has neither been marked nor nominated as a toucher and it was the last bowl of the end, the Umpire should declare the bowl dead (Law 15.3). (c) If, in the umpire’s opinion, there is sufficient evidence to support either skip’s description, the umpire should declare the bowl to be either dead or live in line with that evidence. (d) If there is not enough evidence to support either skip’s description, the umpire should declare the end dead. Explanatory Notes i The team that delivers a bowl is responsible for marking or nominating that bowl as a toucher in line with Law 15. The opposing team should not deny them the opportunity to mark or nominate it. (They can, however, dispute whether or not it was a toucher immediately after it has been marked or nominated.) ii. Decision 2 d): Declaring the end dead when all other options have been exhausted is considered to be the common sense approach to arriving at a final solution to this particular situation. In arriving at this decision, it is understood that one or other of the teams may feel aggrieved as a result. One party feeling aggrieved, however, is an inevitable consequence of having to decide the outcome of any ‘I said’ / ‘You said’ situation.

Abide by the restrictions and stay healthy I hope everyone had a Merry Christmas and a enjoyable new year period because the World and especially the bowling community has been turned upside down with the cancellation of all bowls because of the Covid-19 virus. I stress to everyone to abide by the authorities restrictions and stay healthy. The new Bowls Link program was not fully functional last season with a few unforseen issues. I would like to thank Aaron Delaporte for his time and patience in helping all of us to get accustomed to the new system. With the forced shut down it has given us time to get the program fully functional for next season. The Board of Bowls WA was given a presentation last year from Tony Hume the CEO of Variety. This Charity conducts vehicle 'bashes' particularly in regional areas. For the partnership to be mutually beneficial, there are three vehicle `bashes’ conducted annually in the regions. Can I ask that you support this great cause.

BCiB great sponsors of Bowls I must thank Ian Hopper and his staff from BCIB for the two events that they sponsored early last September. The one in Bunbury was well supported with 24 teams and the one in Cockburn was booked out. BCIB are Bowls WA sponsors for Country Week with the prize money being increased this year. Unfortunately the Ladies Country Week had to be cancelled because of the Caronavirus outbreak and the Men’s Country verses Metro on the Thursday night before the start of country week was cancelled because of inclement weather. However the men were able to carry on and finish their country week. I would like to congratulate Matthew Mitchell on winning the men’s Singles Title. Also Matthew Mitchell and Jon Sharp on winning the Pairs Title and Will Hyatt, Robbie Tiller, Bob Tiller and Jason O’Brien on winning the Fours Title.

South West IRRR Ladies Pairs I attended the South West ILRR Ladies Pairs held at Waroona in November. A high standard of bowls was played with the South West League winning over the Murray League on the last bowl of the competition. Congratulations to the Waroona Club for the standard of the greens presented and organising of meals and the presentation to the winners. Congratulations to the Southern Zone on winning the Women’s IZRR Pairs at Jurien Bay and the South West Zone on winning the Men’s IZRR fours in Kellerberrin for the fourth year in a row. The women’s IZRR Fours to be held in April at Albany was cancelled. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the clubs who have made their venues available for the IZRR’s.

Emu Point win Bignell Shield Congratulations to Emu Point Bowling Club on winning this year’s Bignell Shield for the most Outstanding Club during Country Week.

CCES clinics popular CCES proved popular again last year with venues in the South West, Southern and Eastern Zone holding the clinics. Thank you to Jaewyn and Paul Norton and local coaches showing our future up and coming bowlers the finer points of our game. I hope this is able to go ahead later in the year but this will depend on the restrictions being lifted.

Over 60s State Side series at Ettalong The Over 60’s State side series was held at Ettalong NSW last October. I would like to congratulate all the country Men and Women who were selected in the side and Noelene Abe for her selection in the Trans Tasman Series. With uncertain times ahead please everyone look after yourself and let’s hope the restrictions are over by the start of the next bowling season.

COVID-19 Corona virus By the time this reaches publication we will all be more than familiar with this Pandemic that has caused so much disruption and concern worldwide. Bowls WA Umpires courseq are usually conducted in the Metro area in May and September and in Country Leagues at times suited to their seasonal conditions. Necessarily, all those planned have had to be put on indefinite HOLD until the National medical advice deems it safe, so all those who are due or about due to re-accredit will be able to do so beyond the usual 6-month expiry date (i.e. not have to re-do the whole course as would normally be required) at course/s to be held post-COVID.. In the meantime, this hiatus does provide some time for those of you who wish to keep up with the roles of Officiating, to study the excellent 'Officiating Manual' and/or reflect upon some of those trickier situations and questions you have been faced with or heard about during our somewhat truncated season. Wishing all of you a safe and healthy avoidance of the ravages of the pandemic by adhering to the most sensible hygiene regimes recommended. – Michael Goble-Garrett

Bowls WA is putting kids in need at the heart of their clubs by naming Variety, The Children’s Charity of WA, as their new official Charity Partner. More than 15,500 Bowls WA members across more than 200 clubs, from Kununurra to Esperance, are set to band together to raise funds for Variety WA. Bowls WA CEO Ken Pride said as one of WA’s largest sporting organisations, they felt the need to give back to the community. “We are excited to help the children in our community who need it most by teaming up with Variety WA, and we believe our members will strongly support this partnership,” he said. “We’ve chosen to support Variety WA because we believe the work they do in giving kids a fair go, whether that be through individual grants, scholarships or specialised programs and experiences, ultimately benefits our members’ communities.” The local bowling club has long been the social centre of many WA country towns for people of all ages and walks of life.

Bowls WA has helped to foster a strong sense of community on a local level, and is now bringing that community spirit together to make a difference across the state. “Variety WA exists to support disadvantaged children and their families across WA, who aren’t able to access the support they need through any other means,” Variety WA CEO Tony Hume said. “With the support of Bowls WA, we’ll be able to provide a helping hand to even more kids who are sick, disadvantaged or living with disability.” There are plans for regional Bowls WA clubs to be incorporated into Variety WA’s unique fundraising road trip events, including the iconic Variety Bash, as well as the Variety 4WD Adventure and Variety Creative Car Cruise.

South Perth delight in 2019 BPL Cup By LACHLAN WILLIAMS – Bowls Australia Glenn Pauling’s South Perth team had the better of their fellow club mates to be crowned 2019 BPL Cup champions at Club Pine Rivers, Friday November 15th. In what was an unusual situation, two South Perth sides, led by Pauling and David Mortley, qualified for the final which was broadcast live on Fox Sports, Kayo Sports and Sky Sport NZ. Both sides showed signs of nerves early in the match, but slowly settled in, showing why they were able to advance through regional, state and national qualifiers to reach the final two. After a slow start, Pauling’s side hit form midway through the first set, capitalising on their fifth end powerplay to cruise to a 9-3 first set victory. The eventual champs carried their form into the start of the second set, leading 5-0 after 2 ends before the momentum swung. Mortley and his teammates managed a four on their powerplay, doubling to a total of eight to go ahead 11-5 leading into the final end of the second set.

Despite their efforts, Mortley’s side conceded three shots which were doubled by the powerplay, drawing the set level at 11 a piece and handing Pauling and teammates Scott Walker and Ashley Sharp the championship. “(Being in the final) wasn’t something we expected when we started the competition. We are a pretty small club of about 70-80 bowlers so to have two teams in the final was a bonus, we couldn’t lose,” Pauling said. “It was a bit hard to switch on playing those guys. You don’t want to be too friendly since there is a national title on the line, but it was played in good spirit – we all like each other.” Pauling said playing in a game broadcast across the country was an experience he will never forget. “It was a bit hard to get used to, we were a bit out of our comfort zone but eventually we started to enjoy it. It was a great opportunity,” he said. Sharp was awarded as the Most Valuable Player in the final for his efforts in helping his team across the line to a win. Perth Suns shine on National stage The Perth Suns had some exceptional performances across the two most recent BPL events. Played in November 2019 BPL 10 saw a new team take to the green at Pine Rivers in Queensland with regular Kristina Krstic joined by newcomers Lee Schraner and Cody Packer. The team combined brilliantly to make the finals for the first time in several series. The shot play by Schraner outstanding as the native Victorian endeared himself to the WA supporters. Packer and Krstic supported him strongly as the Suns finished with 9 wins from 15 matches in there best ever display. Unfortunately the finals win eluded them as Melbourne Pulse proved just a touch too good. Lee Schraner finished third in the MVP honours showing his undeniable class at the highest level. The series was won by the Tweed Heads Ospreys in their debut event who defeated Sydney in the final. BPL 11 in February 2020 not surprisingly saw the Perth team go in unchanged albeit with former WA state player Ross Dempsey as the new coach. The series was the first to be played at the magnificent Moama Bowling Club and saw the closest finish ever in BPL history as just two wins separated every team from first to last on the ladder. For the Perth Suns the opening day proved costly as they lost all four matches however to their credit they played the series right out to the last bowl to finish with six wins and eight losses and seventh spot overall. A switch to put Cody Packer as skip with Schraner leading was the catalyst behind the improved results. Packer finished third in the MVP award and impressed all onlookers with his terrific performances. The home town side Murray Steamers took the title in one of the most entertaining finals ever witnessed over the Melbourne Pulse. Australian Senior Championships

WA finish fourth at Seniors Sides Championships The Western Australia Men’s and Women’s Senior State Teams can be proud of their efforts finishing in fourth place at the Australian Seniors Sides Championships in NSW at Ettalong Bowling Club from October 21-14, 2019. Both teams finished the round robin event played against the seven other states and territories with four wins and three losses. Host state NSW won the Men’s competition whilst Queensland were unbeaten winning the Women’s competition. The Barns/McKenzie Award for the best performed player for the men was first time representative John Goddard, whilst the Beryl Brennan Award for the best performed player for the women was Noelene Abe. The players will officially receive their trophies at the Bowls WA Awards Night hopefully in September 2020. Noelene was also selected to represent Australia in an Over 60’s Trans Tasman side in Singles and Pairs, this is first time Australia has selected representatives in this age category. Grant Nicol and Steve O’Neill both reached notable 50 games milestones during the series. Once again congratulations to all players for their efforts in representing WA. WA win two medals at the Australian Championships WA’s bowlers in the main had a tough time of it at the Australian Championships at Merimbula, NSW held at the magnificent Club Sapphire however were able to come away with two medals. The Women’s Fours side of Helen Morss, Therese Hastings, Laura Merz and Robyn O'Brien who were defending champions at the event suffered a shock 12-15 loss to the Northern Territory and despite defeating the more fancied states of Victoria and Queensland finished second in their section. They did pick up a bronze medal with a handy 13-11 victory over Tasmania in the play-off match. WA’s Kristina Krstic finished out of the medals in the Women’s Singles but it could have been so different if not for a couple of bowls at the end of two matches. Firstly in her opening sectional match she was narrowly beaten by the eventual runner-up Genevieve Delves (NSW) 25-23 after holding game and suffered the same fate in her bronze medal playoff once again defeated 25-23 this time against Victoria’s Kylie Whitehead. In the Men’s competition the WA trio of Daniel Brown, Kyle McIlroy (sub) and Shane Loftus suffered three one shot losses in another case of what could have been. The last of them in Bronze medal playoff which South Australia claimed 17-18. Manning’s Blake Butler continued his great singles form by qualifying for the Men’s final with two good wins in sectional play. Butler found himself up against Australian Jackaroo and NSW representative Matthew Baus who took the early initiative with a 7-1 lead.

A series of good ends by Butler got him right back into the contest and he led the final at 12-11 with some great bowls. Both players were able to consistently draw close on the undercover synthetic surface which was playing nicely. The players continued to trade shots with the scores level at 15 all. Baus then strung the next three ends together to take a 19-15 lead and was holding another four when Butler drew a great shot to take a single with the score now 16-19 down. However that was to be Butler’s last scoring end as Baus got a four on the next end and then picked up the final two shots after a killed end to take the title. Butler can however hold his head high claiming the silver medal for his outstanding efforts.

We all want to play bowls soon! We hear you – you just want to play bowls again! Don’t we all. It is a difficult time at the moment as we get used to a changing lifestyle over the next few months, where we will be without our beloved sport, our social interaction, and just the opportunity to have a face-toface chinwag with our mates. But, if we do the right things just imagine how great it is going to be when • Clive Adams. we get back out there on the greens… healthy and safe, and ready to do battle all over again. As your Regional Bowls Managers, myself and Steve Unsworth remain committed to helping you and your clubs to navigate this period, so that when we come out of it, our clubs are ready to shine, to grow and to celebrate what we have to offer. Steve and I have spoken to many club representatives over the past few weeks, helping to decipher the various stimulus packages introduced to assist individuals, and importantly clubs, to survive the impact of the shutdown period. If we haven’t spoken to you or your club yet, don’t hesitate to give us a call. There’s always a bright side – we actually haven’t missed too much in the way of bowls as a result of this crisis given it came at the end of our season. Yes we may be unable to enjoy a roll-up at the moment, but it is a small price to pay for our health and wellbeing. There’s mixed messages coming from other sports and other organisations, around what is exercise, and what is permissible, but we strongly urge you to follow the advice from Bowls Australia and Bowls WA at the moment, stay home, stay safe and bowls will be waiting for all of us at the end of this. For Clubs, the shutdown presents potential opportunities. Once we have our heads around what all this means and the things we need to put in place over the down time, then the chance comes to get to all of those things that we set aside, or struggle to find the time for. • Constitutions – anyone miss the recent review period – you can still get it done and up-to-date, and now you’ve got the one valuable thing you didn’t have – time. • Get your business or strategic plan done, or if you have one, review it – it’ll be important when things are back up and running • Make a great website for when everything gets back to normal

• Get familiar with Social Media – it’ll help market your Club, and you can stay in touch with the family all at the same time • Look at the programs that Bowls Australia has to offer, and plan accordingly – perhaps look at 'Sporting Schools', 'Jack Attack' or 'Roll Back the Clock' • Organise committee meetings using • Steve Unsworth. technology like Zoom or FaceTime – if you don’t know how it works when would you ever have a better time to learn? • Look at the various grant opportunities out there. Right now might not be the time to put in for a grant, but that doesn’t stop you preparing everything so that when the time comes, the work is primarily done. There’s also some great things that your club can be doing for your members. • Instigate a buddy system, where members are staying in touch with each other during this downtime. Some people will be sitting at home with very little to do, so a phone or video call might be just the thing to brighten someone’s day • If you have existing social media, use it to keep your members informed and interested in the club – if you have past videos or anything you can put up to give them some entertainment, then go for it • If ever you were going to survey your members about the aspects of your club, now is the time. People will enjoy the opportunity to give you their thoughts, and who knows, some great ideas might come out of it. As Regional Bowls Managers we are continuing in our roles, knowing that clubs may well need us more than ever at the moment. Changing workplace arrangements may well come into play at some stage, as we have seen across the community, but our desire to assist clubs and individuals at this time does not change. If you are uncertain about aspects of the Stimulus Packages and how they pertain to your club, or if you would like to discuss the plan for the future, or any other aspect of our regular RBM roles, have no hesitation in simply giving us a call or dropping us an email. Under 18s Australian Championships

WA performs well at Nationals The 2019 National Junior Side Series has come to completion with some great results for WA. The event was played at Bendigo Bowling Club on October 2-4th 2019. The WA Boys fought hard and won all the final matches in their respective competitions. In the Boys Singles there was a hard-fought battle resulting in Jack East bringing home the Gold to WA – a great result from last year’s effort winning Silver. • Jack East – Boys Singles Winner. Jack defeated Victoria’s Jarryd Davies 21-16 in a great final. In the Fours the boys side of Patrick Quinlan, Marcus Simpson, Corey Day and Segan Pasalich had a great game in the bronze final and also had a great victory, a huge 21-5 win over the Victorian team. Add to these two impressive results, the wins in the pairs and triples rounded up the positive finish for WA Boys. The girls faced the challenge of being fairly new representatives to National Championships and played to their best abilities without achieving quite the same results. A win in the finals gave fifth place to the Pairs team of Emmalyn Aarts and Ruby Leggett. Emmalyn also finished sixth in the Singles whilst the WA team which included Racquel and Olivia Cross finished in eighth place in the fours and triples. With more experience under their belts Australian Under 18’s Championships Summary Results they will be players to watch in the future. State Fours Results

Stars combine for State Fours The Men’s State Fours Semi Finals and Final took place at the Manning Bowling Club with great bowls aplenty to entertain the crowd that had gathered. After a sluggish start, the star-studded team of Daniel Trewhella, Tom Mitchell, Peter Ker and Mark Simpson eased through their semi final 25-10 over last seasons state pairs champions Hadyn Smith and Peter Jones who were joined by Nathan Jones and Peter Fleay. The other Semi Final was a classic. After being level at 8-8 after seven ends the team of Brad Ball, Chris Lander, Ben Garrett and Russell Bates skipped away to a match winning lead 16-8. However in a great comeback which started with some singles before turning into a couple of twos and finally a three, Nick Reagan, Bill Brandsma, Arren Zis and Ross Dempsey found themselves two in front with one end to play. However, the Ball rink was able to grab the two shots to force an extra end and to allow the crowd to enjoy the drama a bit longer. After the dust had settled and the last bowl played, it was Ball that came through to challenge Trewhella in the final of the WA State Fours. The final began in unusually warm October conditions with the Manning green playing exceptional well especially for this early in the season. All players were playing their share of good bowls early with the Trewhella team edging away to a five nil lead after four ends before Ball got on board with a single. Another couple of singles and a two saw Trewhella get right on top but the actual play on the green was much closer than the scoreboard suggested. The Ball team kept pushing forward but could not get the major break through required to put some scoreboard pressure on Trewhella. At 15-5 Ball got aggressive looking to change the momentum. Even though twice they put the jack in the ditch early in the end and finishing less than two feet away, it was Mitchell who drew on the edge of the ditch a number of times to either get shot or stop any signs of the Trewhella team dropping a number and letting Ball back in the game. In the end the consistency of scores on the board with Trewhella winning twelve of the seventeen ends played getting his team over the line and a WA Men’s State Fours Title. The final score was 18-6. The small but enthusiastic crowd at the Manning Bowling Club on Sunday were treated to a high standard and enthralling finish to the Women’s State Fours Final. The Manning quartet of Kristina Krstic, Hailey Packer, Robyn O’Brien and Helen Heal went into the final as favourites for the title but the Composite side of Lea Mias,

Jennie Bruce, Joanne Lancaster and Lexie Harris had been impressive all through the competition. The Krstic team settled into their work early playing on their home green and lead 5-0 after 3 ends before Mias hit back with a two and then a big five to show that they would not be intimidated. At the halfway mark the two teams showed they were evenly matched at 9-9, and the crowd was in for a treat as they settled in for the second half. The Manning team looked to have held off the challenge by going ahead 15-9 before the Mias team, made up of country bowlers, dug deep to edge back into the contest. Winning five of the next six ends saw Mias again draw level 18-18 going into the last end. With one Krstic bowl to play, the Mias team had one hand on the trophy, after they lay shot and Krstic having to draw within eighteen inches to take the title. Where the final Krstic bowl would have finished without getting a well-placed small glide off her own short bowl, may well be debated long after the game has finished. The bowl may have had good weight, or it could have been slightly long. It was a little narrow but may have held on enough to get the shot anyway. Either way it doesn’t matter as the Krstic bowl found an edge to get around the short bowl and then wobble its way up to fall in for shot to give her team the title 19-18.

Coronavirus COVID-19 – Support for Clubs

BowlsWA to provide assistance and information for clubs Through this period of shutdown Bowls WA in conjunction with Bowls Australia are and will continue to provide support for clubs. It is important clubs use this time to continue to evaluate their circumstances, look for ways they can survive through support including financial assistance and plan so that when they can re-open they are ready to build for the future. The information below is focused on the financial assistance currently available to clubs.

Keeping employees in clubs Under the JobKeeper Payment, businesses impacted by the coronavirus will be able to access a subsidy from the Government to continue paying their employees. Affected employers will be able to claim a fortnightly payment of $1,500 per eligible employee from 30 March 2020, for a maximum period of 6 months. Employers will be eligible for the subsidy if: • their business has a turnover of less than $1 billion and their turnover has fallen by more than 30 per cent (of at least a month). To establish that a club has faced a 30 per cent fall in their turnover, they would be expected to establish that their turnover has fallen in the relevant month or three months (depending on the natural activity statement reporting period of that business) relative to their turnover a year earlier. Eligible employees are employees who: • are currently employed by the eligible employer (including those stood down or re-hired) • were employed by the employer at 1 March 2020 • are full-time, part-time, or long-term casuals (a casual employed on a regular basis for longer than 12 months as at 1 March 2020) • are at least 16 years of age • are an Australian citizen, or the holder of a permanent visa • are not in receipt of a JobKeeper Payment from another employer In summary, the employer must have been in an employment relationship with eligible employees as at 1 March 2020, and confirm that each eligible employee is currently engaged in order to receive JobKeeper Payments. Where employers participate in the scheme, their employees will receive this payment as follows. • If an employee ordinarily receives $1,500 or more in income per fortnight before tax, they will continue to receive their regular income according to their prevailing workplace arrangements. The JobKeeper Payment will assist their employer to continue operating by subsidising all or part of the income of their employee(s). • If an employee ordinarily receives less than $1,500 in income per fortnight before tax, their employer must pay their employee, at a minimum, $1,500 per fortnight, before tax. • If an employee has been stood down or been re-hired by the same eligible employer, their employer must pay their employee, at a minimum, $1,500 per fortnight, before tax.

The subsidy will start on 30 March 2020, with the first payments to be received by employers in the first week of May. Clubs will be able to register their interest in participating in the Payment from 30 March 2020 on the ATO website. It is important employers inform employees if they have been nominated under the JobKeeper Payment and subsequently employees that were claiming income support such as JobSeeker or other payments notify Services Australia of the change in circumstances. Cash flow assistance Eligibility: • employ staff and withhold tax on wages; • businesses with a turnover of less than $50M – includes NotFor-Profits; • active employers prior to March 12. Businesses can receive two payments of a minimum of $10,000 and a maximum of $50,000 from April 28. Coronavirus COVID-19 – Support for Clubs Temporary relief for financially distressed businesses There is a temporary increase in the threshold (from $2,000 to $20,000) at which creditors can issue a statutory demand on a business and the time companies have to respond to statutory demands they receive (from 21 days to six months). There is temporary relief for directors from any personal liability for businesses trading while insolvent – this will apply for six months. Loan guarantee scheme and relaxation of lending Eligibility: • businesses with a turnover of less than $50M – includes NotFor-Profits. The Government will provide a guarantee of 50% for new unsecured loans to be used for working capital. Loans of up to $250,000 for up to three years, with a pause on repayments for six months – to commence by early April. More details can be found at: https://treasury.gov.au/sites/ default/files/2020-03/Fact_sheet-Supporting_the_flow_ of_credit_1.pdf The Government is also providing an exemption from responsible lending obligations for lenders providing credit to existing small business customers. This exemption is for six months, and applies to any credit for business purposes, including new credit, credit limit increases and credit variations and restructures.

LATE NEWS! The State Government recently announced liquor licence renewal fees and/or penalty fees for 2020 will be waived as part of a $1 billion economic and health relief package to support Western Australian businesses and the community during the COVID-19 pandemic. The department will contact liquor licensees in the coming weeks to request for information in order for the 2020 liquor licence and/or penalty fees to be refunded.

Over 60s Men’s and Women’s Triples Results

Sorrento side win Over 60s Men’s Triples John Goddard, Colin Jasper and Geoff Murray combined for their first Over 60s State title by defeating Alan Pryce, Graham O’Brien and John Andrew 19-6 in the WA State Triples Final played at the Osborne Park Bowling Club. In getting to the final Goddard, after being behind for much of the match, had a tight win in the Semi Final over Gary Caffell, Ross White and Gordon Twist. Pryce had a slightly easier win over the Jurien triple of Ian James, Brian Eather and Donald Patton. The first four ends of the final promised a tight tussle with Pryce leading 3-2, but a three, two and single on consecutive ends to Goddard put them in strong 8-3 position that they would never relinquish. Last end thriller in Women’s O60s Triples The final of the Women’s Over 60’s State Triples saw North Beach’s Lee-Anne Green team up with Sorrento’s Nerrida Porteous and Lily Leach to produce a come from behind win over the composite team of Robyn Marland (Bayswater), Patience Hoad (Bayswater) and Leeanne Gray (Osborne Park) at the Osborne Park Bowling Club. Earlier in the day Green had a 15-11 win over the composite team of Irene Arndt, Jenny Parker and Elizabeth Marshall in her semi-final. While Marland was too strong for Yunderup’s Janet Millar, Sandie Deves and Marie Hickey 24-18 in a closely fought contest. The final was played in blustery conditions at Osborne Park and it was the Marland skipped team that raced to a 6-1 lead after 5 ends of the 18 end final. Another 4 ends of trading singles then saw Robyn Marland produce a great sitting shot with her last bowl to make 4 shots and put her team in a commanding 12-3 lead after 10 ends. It was then that the Green skipped team dug deep and started to produce more consistent bowls despite the wind making consistency a very difficult skill. The fightback started with a 2 on the 11th end and looked to be gathering momentum when they got back to 9-12 after 13 ends. Marland seemed to steady the ship by drawing two great shots when the jack had been moved just inside the boundary line and at 14-9 with 4 ends to play a win was in sight. The North Beach/Sorrento combination were not to be denied however and they kept coming with consecutive 3’s seeing them hit the lead with 2 ends to play and it was their turn to see a victory on the horizon. Over 60s Mens and Womens Pairs Results

Sorrento storm to Ladies Over 60s Pairs win Sorrento’s Barbara Lorencs and Mosman Park’s Trish Cunningham have combined to win their first titles taking the Women’s Over 60’s Pairs final at Osborne Park Bowling Club. The composite pairing not only had to out bowl plenty of great opposition but get through the reasonably hot conditions over the three days of the event. They saved their best for last as they overcame the Port Bouvard team of Carol Gorbunow and Irene Kozak in the final winning 20-11. The winning move was made on end 12 of the scheduled 18 end final when the pairing won four successive ends to take the score from 11-9 to 20-9 including a big score of four on end 13. Lorencs who was ably assisted by some great leading from Cunningham played some great bowls in both the final and semi-final. Trailing 11-3 in the semi they powered past previous winners Linda Warburton and Kerry Andersen for an impressive 15-13 victory. Gorbunow and Kozak also defeated past winner in their semifinal leading all the way to just hold on against the talented Kathy Gobbart and Julie Savell 17-15. • Irish Cunningham (Mosman Park) and Barbara Lorencs (Sorrento).

Kardinya teammates win Men’s Over 60s Kardinya team mates Darryl Radford and John Terrell have beaten out a field of 100 teams to claim the Men’s over 60’s State Pairs at Sorrento Bowling Club. It is the first major title for both bowlers but comes as no surprise given they both have a long career in the sport playing in the top grade pennant competitions. The Kardinya pair were undefeated throughout winning three sectional matches plus four knockout rounds including a comfortable 16-9 victory in the final against the North Beach duo of Richard Hunter and Leo Mola who also played terrific bowls through out the event. • Kardinya teammates Darryl Radford and John Terrell.

Masters Series The Dyenamic Sublimation Masters Series is currently at a stand still with just three events remaining including the partially competed Men’s Masters Fours which is down to the semi-final stage. It is hoped these events may still be able to be played albeit on rescheduled dates.

Merz becomes a dual Masters Champion This event was held again at Mosman Park Bowling Club from February 21st to 23rd. A full field of 64 players fronted up over 2 days to complete the knockout rounds in warm and humid conditions although certainly somewhat of a relief as compared to the previous few days. With all participants having previously won a club singles event the standard of the competition remains high and it was pleasing to see representation from over 26 clubs – country and metro and some new entrants to the competition as compared to previous years. Manning’s Laura Merz continued her brilliant recent form to dominate the final over Hailey Packer in a surprising score line 25-4. The beaten semi-finalists were Irene Leahy and Pam Chalmers.

Locals scoop Pairs The final of the $7000 Doubleview Masters Pairs was played Tuesday Night February 18th at the Doubleview Bowling Club with two local players scooping the first prize in Ryan Moyle and Corey Bessant who took the title 21-10 from the side of Cody Packer (Osborne Park) and Shane Knott (Manning). Rarely in a major title does the first end produce anything of significance however it did in this event with the Doubleview lads producing a big score of 7 on the opening end which was ultimately the catalyst for the win.

New Masters Pairs Two new names were added to the trophy as the Tour de Force North Beach Ladies Masters Pairs concluded on the afternoon of January 12th 2020. Manning’s Hailey Packer with her Osborne Park partner Toni Madigan claimed the title for the first time with a very impressive 20-9 victory over the defending title holders Kristina Krstic and Helen Heal from Manning. Packer has had a remarkable run in recent events including a State Fours win with her opponent Krstic played superbly and was equally assisted by Madigan as they had the answers for most of the match in a strong victory.

The Men’s Masters Singles was first held in WA in 1963 and in 2019 found a new host, new sponsor and new winner. Bassendean Bowling Club with some of the finest greens in Australia saw 54 of WA’s best male bowlers do battle for the Cork and Bottle Men’s Masters Singles title over three days of intense competition. Osborne Park’s Cody Packer added to his Mixed Masters Fours and Pairs titles with his first major Singles victory and he did it in impressive fashion beating the home crowd favourite Bassendean’s Matthew Whitely 25-7.

Slavich – back to back Doubleview’s John Slavich has skippered back to back Bassendean Men’s Masters Triples wins as the finals of the event played out on 24th November 2019 with $3,500 in prize money up for grabs. Slavich again teamed with Lee Such (Manning) however Justin Opie (South Perth) was in the lead spot this year with Steve Collins having moved back to the east coast. The three combined magnificently and were outstanding in the final defeating the strong Manning side of Tom Mitchell, Stephen Patterson and Miles Kemp. The final score 22-10.

Mixed Masters Fours

Couples combine for Masters glory Two of WA’s most prominent couples have combined to win the Inaugural Trevors Carpets Masters Mixed Fours at Sorrento Bowling Club on Monday 30th September 2019, the opening event for the season in the Dyenamic Masters Series. A strong field of 32 teams entered the event with a number of bowling couples joining forces to try and take the share of the massive $10,000 prize money on offer. Winning drive assists

The Bowls WA Club Development program Winning Drive has entered a review phase following a successful first twelve months of operation. The program supported by the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural industries through Every Club Grant funding saw over 80% of bowling clubs in WA receive face to face support through specific training workshops available via the Winning Drive program. One club, which has enjoyed the benefits the Winning Drive program can offer, was the Pinjarra Bowling and Recreation Club Inc. The arrival of Winning Drive coincided with the club looking to improve its position within the local community and areas of club governance. Club Secretary Jan Hall talked to us about Pinjarra’s involvement. “The club already had the intent to start looking more strategically at what we do. The Top Club program, which was one of the offerings within the Winning Drive program, came along at a good time for us. It really gave us a platform and was a handy, efficient and time effective tool to get things started. The other benefit we got was that the questionnaire, which is the initial steps of the program, received good buy-in from members and we really learnt a lot from that.

We were able to continue to engage with the members through the entire strategic planning process to make sure the plan we finished with demonstrated a real club commitment to what the members wanted.” The outcome for Pinjarra was that they had a clear vision moving forward in several key areas. The club was able to update their Club Constitution and produce a Strategic Plan for 2019-2024, which will continue to guide them moving forward. Both of these documents were produced with input from Regional Bowls Manager Steve Unsworth, who is heavily involved in the Winning Drive program along with his regular duties in delivering Bowls Australia support programs to clubs. Other areas of club improvement that Pinjarra were able to work on were as follows: • Member Communication and Services – the club has; - Developed and implemented a Member Code of Conduct; - Produced a monthly newsletter;

Expanded the club noticeboard; Developed a new member induction pack; Implemented a stronger focus on club volunteers; Trained four new bowls coaches as part of a strategy to integrate new bowlers into competition; and, - has seen a happier, inclusive and a more vibrant club. • Club Promotions – The club received a grant to develop modern logo and promotional material, which was launched at a Club Open Day early in the year. Since then, the club; - Conducts targeted and proactive club promotion throughout the community; - Developed a new club website and Facebook page; - Increased club social activities; and, - Engaged a local chef who assists with some club social events and community functions, with the view to increasing as demand dictates. • Engagement with Local Government – the club strengthened relationships with the Shire of Murray President, CEO, the Sport and Recreation Officer, The Youth Officer, The Manager of Governance and the Community Development Officer. This led increased opportunities to strengthen networks and contribute to community decision-making. The club is keen to continue to add value to the Shire as a community resource. • Engaged with local Community Groups and Business – the club sent letters to all local community organisations promoting partnership opportunities and the club as a venue for business functions, networking and workshops. This has resulted with increased bookings. The club was also able to maintain its strong community bowls programs and increase its levels of sponsorship. • Engagement with local schools – for the first time the club hosted the local high school as part of the school’s sports curriculum. 140 students participated in an innovative introductory to bowls program, twice a week across two terms. A total of 19 weeks or 950 student hours of lawn bowls. BowlsWA • Jack Hi • April 2020

The club, through our strategic review, made a conscious decision to be proactive in encouraging new people of all ages and backgrounds into the club and making them feel welcome. “A real highlight for us was the special needs students as part of the High School Learning Enrichment Team curriculum. Seeing these kids being able to improve their bowling skills and the enjoyment they got out of playing was a real delight for us. We are hoping they will be back in 2020.” Jan commented. All these improvements have seen the club become a more diverse, social and recreational club, which increased its membership to new levels. “We have picked up 70 new members this year, inclusive of 20 bowlers and 50 social members, but more importantly we are now strongly connected with our community.” Jan Hall said. “Looking to the future we have commenced a feasibility study, which we anticipate will underpin a solid business case for a new enclosed green. We have also initiated a networking strategy with our sports neighbours who share the Ross McLarty Sporting precinct with us. We believe that strong partnerships will greatly assist collaborative efforts to build a great sporting precinct for the communities’ benefit.” “We look forward to seeing what programs and workshops we can use with Winning Drive next year to continue this path we are on.” As part of the review process for Winning Drive, Bowls WA is currently reviewing a survey sent to all affiliated Western Australian Bowling Clubs to gauge interest in further club development and governance areas. A new schedule of programs for Winning Drive will be released in the coming months.

Champion of Champion Series

South Perth host Championship event NSW duo Ray Pearse and Dawn Hayman have been respectively crowned the 2019 Men’s and Women’s Australian Champion of Champions following standout performances during the three days of the event hosted magnificently by the South Perth Bowling Club from October 9-11. Pearse triumphed 21-4 in the final round of play against Northern Territory’s Bruce Fyfe to make up the shot margin required to overtake Victoria’s Nathan Bush, who held the lead and a five-shot advantage following the penultimate round. Fellow BCiB Australian Jackaroo Hayman had already sewn up the title with a round to spare, despite losing her final match against NT’s Colleen Orr. WA entrants Dave Rankin (Kardinya) and Noelene Abe (Corrigin) both registered four wins and three losses in the round robin event to finish third and fifth respectively. Bowls WA congratulates South Perth on their excellent effort to successfully host this national event.

Men’s 2nd Division and Under Triples

Sorrento trio win triples The Sorrento trio of Trevor Orton, Steve Draper and Steve Mortimer have combined brilliantly to win the Men’s Second Division and Under Triples at Osborne Park Bowling Club which concluded on Sunday 5th January 2020. The Sorrento side won the final 17-9 defeating the Safety Bay side of Peter Burgess, Gary Wilkes and Tony Ballard 179. The beaten semi-finalist were the Roleystone team of G Matthews, J Munrowd, G Harper and the Composite side of J Rollnik, R Bandy, A Booth. A strong field of 46 teams contested the event which was as always well run by Osborne Park Bowling Club.

In an all Manning final Laura Merz defeated last years champion and team mate Kristina Krstic 107-83 in a brilliant display at Hilton Park Bowling Club on February 20 2020. Merz came into the event in hot form having won the State Singles less than a month earlier, she cruised through her section and knockout round before surviving a couple of tough encounters. Her quarter final win was a 102-98 victory over Helen Heal before Merz prevailed by the same scoreline against a gallant Elaine Meehan from Warnbro to reach the final. Krstic was simply brilliant in her semi-final defeating Linda Warburton from Mosman Park 104-46 but couldn’t match Merz in the final.

Over 60s Mens and Womens Singles

Fraser wins all Over 60s finals In an all country final it was Bill Fraser from Quairading who defeated Brookton’s David Cliff in the final of the Motobility Men’s Over 60’s State Singles prevailing 21-14, the finals played on the magnificent greens at Osborne Park Bowling Club. Both players had some terrific results to reach the final. Fraser overcoming Aj Heal from Manning 21-19 in a thrilling semi final whilst Cliff had a tough contest in his quarter final overcoming Cockburn’s Michael Zusman 21-18 before a more comfortable 2110 win against North Perth surprise packet Markus Merz who is the father of talented female bowler Laura Merz. Fraser’s win was the first major metropolitan win for him albeit he has long been recognised as a very good country player in the Eastern Zone.

Abe too strong in Women’s Over 60s final The queen of Corrigin Noelene Abe was at her best in taking another title albeit her first in the Women’s Over 60’s Singles event. Played at Belmont City Bowling Club Abe showed all her skill to defeat former winner Rinske Butcher from North Beach 21-6 in the final. Abe faced a tough test in her semi final but proved too good in the end for Therese Hastings winning 21-16 whilst Butcher played a great game to defeat Kathy Gobbart also a former winner 21-17. Dyenamic Men’s State Singles

Second Singles title for John Slavich John Slavich (Doubleview) has put on a masterful display to win the Dyenamic WA Men’s State Singles over last years Champion Blake Butler (Manning) at the Osborne Park Bowling Club. After previously being victorious in 2016 Slavich joins an illustrious group of two or more State Singles Title winners including the greats Dennis Katunarich, Geoff Oakley, Marko Krajancic and Bert Sharp. Slavich was in great form all day including a 21-9 quarter final win over John Carlsen (North Beach) and then a Semi Final victory over young gun Jack East (Osborne Park) 25-7. Equally Blake Butler was mounting an impressive title defence with a 21-13 quarter final victory over Scott O’Brien (Manning) and in a replay of last years final, a 25-10 win over Daniel Trewhella (Scarborough). The sea breeze was slowly venturing in at Osborne Park when the Men’s Final began making conditions slightly cooler for not only the players but the healthy crowd in attendance. Slavich jumped out with a couple of two’s before Butler replied with his own couple of two’s and also a single to lead 5-4 for what would be the only time in the match. A string of seven winning ends in a row including three lots of three to Slavich put Butler squarely on the back foot and Slavich leading 18-5. A mini fightback by Butler saw him win four of the next five ends and close the gap to 12-20 and the crowd hoping for what they saw in the Ladies Final. Slavich responded with a single to take him to 21 and only a potential one end four from the title. Another couple of singles to Butler again gave him hope as he continued to fight and put Slavich under pressure. However the end was to come quickly when a double from Slavich took him to 23 and then another double straight after saw john Slavich hoist the trophy with a terrific display over a fighting Blake Butler 25-14.

Dyenamic Women’s State Singles

Merz triumphs in fantastic Dyenamic final Laura Merz (Manning) has survived a fighting come back from Kerry Andersen (Mosman Park) to win her first Dyenamic WA Women’s State Singles title at the Osborne Park Bowling Club. Earlier in the day Merz overcame Shaan Saunders (Osborne Park) in her Semi Final. Leading 10-9 over Saunders after 12 ends, Merz ran away with the game in the second half to close out the game 25-11. In the other Semi Final Andersen produced a similar finish to defeat her opponent Elaine Meehan (Warnbro). At 14-13 it was anybody's game but 11 shots to 2 over the last 7 ends saw Andersen draw away with a 25-15 victory. The Final started in very warm conditions at the Osborne Park Bowling Club with Merz drawing first blood with two singles on the first two ends. At 3 all after 5 ends, 5 all after 8 ends and 7-6 after 10 ends, it seemed that the very healthy crowd was in for a close game all the way. However than Merz seemed to find her range a little more than Andersen and she started to draw away. A couple of singles and then a triple saw Merz suddenly double Andersen’s score and hold a 12-6 lead. A single to Andersen saw the three end winning run halted but then another three end run by Merz put her in a commanding 18-7 lead. A two to Andersen was countered with two singles by Merz who seemed to have all the answers. But for those of us who have seen Kerry Andersen play over the years, we knew that at some point she would fight back and it would be up to Merz to lift again if she wanted the title. A three, then a single followed by another three to Andersen suddenly saw the lead cut back to 20-16 and the crowded waited for the Merz response. Three singles in a row to take Merz to a 23-16 lead and only two shots from the title seemed to put the Andersen rebellion down. Not to be denied Andersen again lifted her game and put the challenge to Merz, with two singles and a big four to bring the score line to 23-22 and Andersen herself only three shots from what seemed an unlikely victory only 40 minutes earlier.

A single to each player saw Merz one shot from home and Andersen two shots as the big crowd settled in for what would be the last end. Halfway through the end it seemed that disaster may have struck for Merz and that she would be denied her first title by her own doing. Holding the one shot she needed, Merz came through the head slightly over weight and clipped the jack towards two waiting Andersen bowls giving her the required shots for the title. With one bowl left for each player and with the shot bowls around two feet away, it was Andersen on the mat to see if she could put even more pressure on Merz. However it was not to be and Andersen was not able to get any closer leaving Merz with two feet to draw the shot for the title. Out of her hand the line of the bowl looked good but did she have the weight correct in such a pressure situation. It took approximately 15 seconds from that point for the crowd to recognize that yes, Laura Merz did have the weight correct and her first WA State Singles Title was hers over a gallant Kerry Andersen.

Packer and Mitchell too strong in State Pairs

• Runners up, Ryan Moyle and Tom Whitfield.

The pairing of Cody Packer (Osborne Park) and Matthew Mitchell (Emu Point) have taken out the 2019-2020 Dyenamic WA Men’s State Pairs by defeating Ryan Moyle (Doubleview) and Tom Whitfield (Doubleview) in not only a quality final but a quality finals day on the great greens at the Sorrento Bowling Club. The first Semi Final saw Packer and Mitchell pushed to the limit by Bowls WA Academy members Cameron Harris (Cambridge) and Connor Biddle (Warnbro). Harris and Biddle have played together in this event for a number of years and showed tremendous maturity to push the eventual champions all the way. Going into the last end five shots in front the Packer/ Mitchell combination looked to have weathered the storm only to be to see Harris/Biddle produce an all drawn five to force the game to an extra end with the scores locked together at 21-21. The extra end seesawed both ways before Biddle looked to have played the winning shot from the thirds position leaving Packer with a very difficult shot to win the game. However, as he had done throughout the previous games, Packer stood up when it countered and played a great reaching draw to sit the shot bowl and put his pair through to the final. The Second Semi final saw Moyle/ Whitfield take on Quairading pair Steven Bartlett and Colin Hayes. Bartlett/Hayes had been in tremendous form and were well placed to push their younger opponents. Moyle/Whitfield started strongly winning four of the first six ends but found themselves only up 5-4 after dropping a three. A returning four on the seventh end for Moyle/Whitfield was the start of solid run of winning ends which would culminate with a five on the eleventh end putting them in control at 17-6. Three winning ends in a row by Bartlett/Hayes got the pair back to 10-18 with two ends to play but in the end the Moyle/Whitfield combination had all the answers, winning the last two ends to take a 22-10 win.

After two such high quality Semi Finals, the very healthy crowd at the Sorrento Bowling Club waited with high expectations for a great final and for the most part they were not disappointed. On a fast green with a typically healthy breeze at Sorrento, most bowlers would expect there could be some loose heads due to the conditions however the game started and continued throughout with very tight heads and scores at a premium. Moyle/Whitfield hit the green running with two three’s in the first three ends to lead 6-1 before Packer/Mitchell got their own double and triple to tie the score up at 6-6. All four players started very well with Cody Packer and Ryan Moyle in particular trading blows in the Skip positions. Another spurt by Moyle/Whitfield saw the lead back out to three before Packer/Mitchell again countered to take the lead 10-9 at the half way mark. The two teams then traded two’s with first Moyle/Whitfield in the lead and then Packer/Mitchell wrestling it back. It was the twelfth end that turned out to be the championship winning end for Packer/Mitchell. Moyle/Whitfield seemed to do very little wrong when they seemed to have plenty of bowls around a very congested head. However as the thirds started to take the shots out, it became obvious that a large number was about to blow the game open. When the dust had settled, Packer/Mitchell added a big six to their total putting them in command 1811 with six ends to play. It was a similar scenario to what they faced in their Semi Final and clearly, they had learnt their lesson very quickly. Moyle/Whitfield took a single on the thirteenth end, but Packer/ Mitchell turned the screws and had all the answers to reel off a number of doubles win the 2019-20 Men’s State Pairs title. The final score line of 26-12 did little justice to a highly entertaining game with both teams playing the game to an extremely high standard. However, in the end you have to have shot when the last bowl of each end is played and Cody Packer and Matthew Mitchell did that on eleven of the seventeen ends played to fully deserve their Pairs title. 35

Country Pennant Winners The rapid onset of Coronavirus through out WA had a major affect on the number of leagues able to complete their pennant season. Some were fortunate to get through whilst others were awarded to teams finishing on top of the ladder, whilst sadly others are still yet to be decided. Congratulations to all clubs across WA that managed to secure a pennant this season. • The successful Dalwallinu Gold team.

Dalwallinu defeat Ballidu in final Dalwallinu Bowling Club hosted the Men’s Pennant Final for Central Midlands across the weekend of March 14th and 15th. On Saturday afternoon both semi-finals were interrupted by rain about 4.30pm which forced the abandonment of the matches. By then each rink had played enough ends to constitute a match under the rules so both teams with the highest aggregates were declared the winners.

Ballidu defeated Wongan Blue in the first semi and Dalwallinu Gold defeated Moora Blue in the second. On Sunday morning Moora Blue defeated Ballidu and earned the right to face off against Dalwallinu Gold again in the Grand Final. Dalwallinu Gold were again victorious and claimed the Pennant. Congratulations to the Central Midlands Bowling League who ran a great event and to all the volunteers who helped over the weekend, much appreciated.

Kukerin Carnival

Manning win A & M Williams Classic at Kukerin by Phil Adams Kukerin Bowling Club The annual A & M Williams Bowling Classic played at the Kukerin Bowling Club on 22nd and 23rd of October was once again a huge success. This very popular event again attracted a capacity field from a large area with teams this year attended from Albany, Middleton Beach, Emu Point, Gnowangerup, Kojonup, Dunsborough, Leeman, Sorrento, Mundaring, Safety Bay, Manning, Quairading, Dumbleyung, Lake Grace, Newdegate and of course Kukerin. Day one was played in fairly hot conditions for the time of year, however the second day saw very pleasant conditions prevail. Tuesday’s play saw a lot of very close and high class games played with only one team going through undefeated. Day two provided the usual changes in fortunes and going into the last game of the event any one of a number of teams had a chance of featuring on the winners list. The Manning team of M. Carey, G. Hogg, R. Kerr and P. Barrow who had been undefeated to this point in time, lost their last game to last years winners E. Hoemberg and team from Dunsborough, however the Manning team had just 36

enough shots up to win the event with five wins and 26 shots up from Dunsborough on five wins and 25 shots up. The Kukerin combination were placed third on five wins plus 6. First days winners were the Dumbleyung team and second day winners were first time competitors from Sorrento. The Kukerin Club thanks all visiting players and our many sponsors for their continued support of this event. Women’s Tuesday Pennants

Seven Clubs receive Pennant Flags The Blooms The Chemist Women’s Tuesday Pennant finals were completed in mid March just before all bowling events came to a standstill. In a change from the usual format Bowls WA made a late decision to split the finals across three venues in order to comply with government regulations around Covid-19. Host clubs Yokine (Premier, 1st White and 4th Div), Osborne Park (1st Green South and North) and Manning (2nd and 3rd Division) did a sterling job of providing great venues for the finals to go ahead. Seven different clubs were awarded a flag whilst the traditional pennant badges for individuals will be available at a later date for these clubs to award to their players.

Manning 64 def Mosman Park 58 In one of the closest Premier League finals in recent times Manning again showed their ability and proved just a touch too good for regular rivals Mosman Park. The match was wide open at the half way mark before Manning edged away in the second half of the encounter. The rink of Helen Heal, Karina Gale, Robyn Jolly and Krstina Krstic instrumental in the victory with a 26-13 win. Heal in particular was outstanding but all players were solid in a great display for Manning as they completely dominated the last 8 ends of the contest. Mosman Park fought hard all day and should be very proud of their efforts in the final. For Manning it is a remarkable sixth straight flag and their 11th in 13 seasons.

Leeming finished on top of 1st White and held solid in the finals series to claim the flag. Again a very tight final against Mosman Park who battled hard all day before Leeming urged on from a vocal support crew lifted over the last half of the match to secure the win. The big winner for Leeming was the rink of Jan Pass, Chris Bolt, Lucy Tinley and Sue Neill 24-11. Victoria Park Carlisle who finished second but missed the grand final will join Leeming in a return to Premier League in season 2020/21.

Warwick 57 def Scarborough 51 In another great final it was Warwick who took the 1st Green North flag. After defeating top of the ladder Sorrento by two shots in the semi finals they overcame a resilient Scarborough by six in the final. Klaire Hughes rink of Sue Hinge, Cheryle Smith and Gail Davies had a great finals series winning by 17 shots in the semi final and eight in the final. 37

Probably the most dominant team across the Women’s Tuesday Pennant competition Willetton’s 1st Green South team were superb in the finals series taking their semi final by 36 shots against Dalkeith Nedlands before winning the grand final by 19 against Rockingham. Margaret Parise’s side with a big 18 shot win in the final supported by Margaret Berson’s rink who also prevailed by 13. Willetton and Sorrento (top of Green North) now earn promotion to 1st White for 2020/21.

Safety Bay and North Beach came together in the Grand Final of 3rd Division after both teams were able to shake off their opponents in the Semi Finals the previous day. Safety Bay was the highest ranked colour winner and earnt the right to host the Semi Finals on the Tuesday. Kalamunda made the trip down the hill to the coast but were unable to overcome the host club, while North Beach took the honors over Glen Forrest in the other Semi Final. While there was not much in the aggregate all day, Safety Bay always had their nose in front with the rink of Coralie Beswick(sk), Jean Spalding, Norma Cox and Bianca Taylor proving to be the match winner with a 21-12 rink win.

Warnbro 1 68 def Warwick 51 Warnbro have capped of an outstanding season in 2nd Division by defeating Warwick in an entertaining Grand Final at Manning. Having only lost 2 games in the home and away season, Warnbro earned the right to host the first day of finals by comfortably having the highest points total across the four colour winners. A solid win in the Semi Final up against Kalamunda put them in good stead for their clash against Warrick who overcame Merriwa AFA 2 in their Semi Final clash. The outstanding rink for Warnbro proved to be Vera Meehan(sk), Lorelle Watson, Susanne Webster and Lynette Balding who controlled the aggregate board from the start to eventually run out 38-6 victors on their rink.

Perth and Tatts 49 def Hollywood-Subi 30 Regular fourth division finalists Perth and Tatts played Hollywood Subiaco once again to decide the title. Both clubs only have a limited number of players however they relish the opportunity in this grade to perform at their best.

Inter-Zone Series Round Robin–Men

South Western sweep Men s Zone The powerful South Western Zone have claimed another Men’s Inter Zone Round Robin title doing it in impressive fashion dropping just three of fifteen rinks across the weekend of bowls played at Kellerberrin Bowling Club February 8-9 2020. The side had three rinks go through the event undefeated with Rob Bowron, Robbie Tiller and Andrew Drayton skipped teams leading the charge. This is their fourth straight title in the last four years. Southern Zone finished runner-up with a win and a draw and certainly made the South Western side earn the title pushing them all the way in just a three shot loss on Saturday afternoon which proved to be the championship decider. Northern Zone finished in 3rd spot with one aggregate win whilst Eastern side rounded out the ladder with a draw against the Southern zone, their best performance.

Southern Zone win First Ladies Pairs The cream of Country Lady Bowlers assembled in Jurien on the weekend to compete in the Inter Zone Pairs. Played in perfect weather and on greens running at 16.5 seconds the bowls were of the highest quality. At the conclusion the Southern Zone were declared the winners having 6 points, 43 shots up and 10.5 rink wins. They were followed by the Eastern Zone on 2 points, plus 14 and 9.5 rink wins. Third was the Northern Zone followed by the South Western Zone both also having 2 points. This was the Southern's Zone first win in the Pairs event, and was richly deserved. Congratulations and well done to the host venue and all players.

Hong Kong visit proves successful

On Wednesday 29th January, the Hong Kong Youth Development team played against the Bowls WA Academy team at the very picturesque Mosman Park Bowling Club, to finish off their very busy tour as guests of Bowls WA. They were in awe of the amazing views presented to them when they arrived and had the cameras clicking before heading out on to the green. The players from Hong Kong ranged in age, starting at 14, and obviously had some very well drilled routines and deliveries. The morning session was played with three rinks of fours and ended up with a drawn aggregate. In the afternoon, the players were divided into two rinks of singles, two rinks of pairs and two rinks of triples. The wind had changed significantly and this was much more of a challenge for the Hong Kong players, with the Academy team recording a much bigger win across all rinks.

The on and off field comradery between the Academy team and the Hong Kong team was a very pleasing aspect of the day. Mosman Park and Bowls WA put on a superb morning tea, lunch and afternoon nibbles for the visitors who, even when the day was finished, they went back out onto the greens and rolled a few extra ends for practice before heading off to their hotel for their evening meal. President of Bowls WA and Mosman Park member, Kerry Andersen welcomed and farewelled the visitors, who in turn presented the club with a memento of their visit. Bowls WA would like to thank all the host clubs for their tremendous support and hospitality of the Hong Kong Youth visit to Perth. We hope this will begin a regular partnership between the two associations into the future.

Mitchell wins his first Country title

Matthew Mitchell has claimed not only his first Men’s Countryweek Singles title but also Emu Point Bowling Clubs, with a hard-fought win over Dudley Park's James Jaworski. Earlier in the Semi Finals, Mitchell had to overcome 2015 Champion Matthew France in a see sawing affair. Multiple times Mitchell edged out to a lead only to see France haul him back in. An early lead of 8-4 was overcome by France before Mitchell again moved away to 12-7 only to see France again come back to be 12-11 down. At 17-11, it seemed that Mitchell was going well enough to cruise to victory, only for France to again come back and take the lead 17-18 for the first time in the match with two quick 3’s. For the last five ends it was shot for shot and bowl for bowl as they drew together at 20-20 in the first to 21 contest. Without playing his last bowl it was Mitchell to come out on top 21-20 in the enthralling match. James Jaworski also had to overcome a previous winner in his semi-final, with 2004 Champion Jon Sharp having a superb 2019-20 Countryweek. Sharp started the best taking an early 5-1 lead, but it was Jaworski who worked his way into the match and eventually take the lead at 9-8 and then slowly work away. At 11-17 down, Sharp threw a scare in the Jaworski camp when he

grabbed a full count of four shots to go to 15-17 but Jaworski settled and took the victory 21-16. The final of Matthew Mitchell versus James Jaworski promised to be full of entertainment with both players good on the draw but also accurate with a drive. Surprisingly neither of their clubs being Emu Point or Dudley Park, had produced a Men’s Singles Winner in the 89 year history of the event. So not only was there a title on the line but a little bit of history for their club. Both players started a little nervously before settling down, while Jaworski scored a two on the first end it was Mitchell who made the early running with a four on the second end and then quickly pushing out to a 12-4 lead. A three and a single to Jaworski closed the gap before Mitchell again pushed on with four consecutive scoring ends to lead 18-8 in the first to 21 final. Not to be deterred, Jaworski again put the pressure on and won six of the next seven ends to close within four shots of the target score, unfortunately for James, the end that Matthew Mitchell had won put him on 20 and therefore only a single away from his first title. With the heat turned on it was Matthew Mitchell who would prevail and claim the singles shot required to win 21-17 and to hold his first Men’s Countryweek trophy aloft.

Bignell Perpetual Memorial Shield It was no surprise when Emu Point were announced as the Bignell Shield winners for the best performing club at Men’s Countryweek. With a Singles title to Matthew Mitchell, an equal 3rd to Jon Sharp and the Pairs title to Mitchell and Sharp, Emu Point were this seasons clear cut winners.

Hyatt foursome defeat Corrigin in final The Mandurah/Comet Bay combination of William Hyatt (sk), Robbie Tiller, Bob Tiller and Jason O’Brien have defeated the Corrigin foursome of Bradley Alp (sk), Phil Barber, Greg Tomlinson and Donald Stevens 20-8 in the final of the Men’s Countryweek Fours. Earlier in the Semi Finals Hyatt got a four on the last end to defeat last year’s runner up Haydn Smith, Aaron Smith, Phil Jones and Justin Smith 19-18. The Alp team had a huge second half of their semi final to run away 27-10 over Mt Barker Golf’s John Wright, Ross Skinner, Trevor Pieper and William Pearce. Bradley Alp started strongly in the final, scoring singles on the first three ends and leading 5-1 after 5 ends of the 17 end game. However it was the Hyatt team who started to take control by winning the next 4 ends and leading 8-5. A single to Alp on the 10th end stopped the run but Hyatt then split the game open with a four and a three on consecutive ends to open a match winning 15-6 lead. A two to Alp again stopped the run but again William Hyatt, Robbie Tiller, Bob Tiller and Jason O’Brien went on a run to win the last 3 ends and close out the 2020 Men’s Countryweek Fours Title.

Men’s Country Week Pairs

Emu Point,s Mitchell and Sharp win Pairs

Emu Point’s Matthew Mitchell and Jon Sharp capped off a great week by claiming the Men’s Pairs title with a solid display defeating Brookton’s Michael McBrearty and Craig McGrath in the final. The earlier Semi Finals saw Mitchell/Sharp have a great tussle with Haydn Smith and Phil Jones (York) on the Thursday evening before coming away with a 14-12 win. The McBrearty/McGrath combination also had to fight hard before conquering Brett Baker and Leon Birch (Dudley Park) 15-13. The finals score line of 18-8 to Matthew Mitchell and Jon Sharp in the final was not necessarily a true indication on the closeness of the game. McBrearty did everything but hold the shots early in the contest which may have seen the game change in the second half.

Mitchell started quickly leading 5-3 but then was forced to save a number of ends by not only getting the shot but making numbers or killing the end and starting again. McBrearty could quite easily have seen his pairing level or even leading at the halfway mark of the game but instead was faced with a mammoth task of being 4-12 down against two very experienced current and former WA representatives. Showing their class and game management skills, Matthew Mitchell and Jon Sharp answered every challenge that Michael McBrearty and Craig McGrath threw at them in the second half to take the Countryweek Pairs title 18-8.

2020 All-Abilities Championships

Bowls WA 2020 State All-Abilities Lawn Bowls Championships Kardinya Bowling Club Sunday 29 February and Sunday 01 March – Singles and Pairs

Normally this article has the 'Thank You' note at the end, however, this year it is being swapped to the top of the article to show case the importance of all the volunteers and players who help make this event happen. Bowls WA thanks all players for their participation, determination, and physical stamina for playing up to five timed games a day of 1.25 hours…this equates to 6 hours and 15 minutes daily game time. Also, a very special note of Thanks to Auslan Interpreter Tara Ulrich who volunteers her time to come to our Opening Ceremony and Closing Ceremony to provide ‘ears’ to our Deaf Bowlers…this is an invaluable service that is greatly appreciated! This year a special thanks also to Tara’s husband Nathan Ulrich who helped with the Closing Ceremony picture taking! Special mention must also go to David Ravlich for providing interpreting to the Sunday morning draw announcement… without his help this job would be hard for all the deaf players to understand. A 'huge thankyou' to Kardinya Bowling Club for again hosting this fantastic event…now having completed its seventh year… and the volunteers who made this happen from Tournament Director Steve Flynn who worked side-by-side with Denise McMillan, the Markers who took to the green for all of the Singles Games, the general volunteers who helped to score cards, update score boards and kick bowls, and to the Kitchen support volunteers who made sure there was morning tea

(with fresh scones!) and lunches available for all players and their families and supporters! Without Clubs who support Inclusive Community Initiatives in our great sport we would not be able to provide a competitive environment for inclusive High-Performance Pathways!

2020 All Abilities State Championship Wrap up The 2020 State All Ability State Championships were played over the weekend of February 29th and March 1st, at Kardinya Bowling Club, with 38 participants in four categories of Deaf, Intellectual and Physical Disability, and Vision Impairment. This is a 19% growth from 2019 – we continue to look for players in our bowls communities who would like to participate in an event they can call their own, play amongst their peers, and also play for the rare opportunity of state recognition! What fun everyone had! Lots of laughter and plenty of competitive bowls marked the weekend with players participating in Singles amongst the four categories and Pairs in the Combination (Intellectual and Vision), Deaf and Physical categories.
