Busy finish to season Welcome to another jammed packed edition of Jack Hi. In this edition we cover all the recent competitions that have taken place during a busy finish to the bowls season. Every pennant winner across Western Australia is listed in this edition – congratulations to all bowlers who contributed to success for your club this year. Other competitions covered include the Sheridan’s Country Week Championships which saw the youngest ever winner take out the Men’s Singles in 16 year old Kaleb Walding from Karratha. Anyone who saw the singles finals would have been impressed with his skill and temperament for such a young player and it was no surprise he was able to back it up with two more titles at the Under 18 Championships. Good work Kaleb! , Manning win men s and women s flags The past few months have been a busy time on the bowls calendar. It has been a pleasure to meet with bowlers throughout the State. I have had the opportunity to watch some great bowls at the numerous events I have attended.

Country Week success The Country Week events this year were a success, although nominations were slightly lower than in previous years. Thanks to the many clubs who hosted the Country Week competitions – I know that the country players enjoyed your hospitality. I would like to thank the Match Committees, who spent many hours at the clubs officiating to ensure that the programs ran smoothly. Welcome to Sheridan’s Badges and Engraving who have joined BWA as naming rights sponsors for Country Week. Congratulations to the winners of all events; including Jenny Parker from Northam, and Kaleb Walding from Karratha who won the respective coveted Singles titles. The future appears to be in good hands with promising bowlers like 16 year old Kaleb Walding. After taking out the Singles title at Country Week, he has progressed to win the Under 18 State Singles and Pairs titles. We look forward to following his progress, and welcoming more young bowlers to the sport.

IZRR The Inter Zone Round Robins again brought together the cream of country bowlers, and competition was keen as usual. I was fortunate to attend the Men’s Inter Zone Round Robin, held at the Halls Head BC, won by the South West Zone. I also attended the Women’s Inter Zone Fours event at the Kellerberrin BC. The women of the Eastern Zone won the shield for the first time in 31 years, an exciting last match and countback of rink wins led to the victory.

Congratulations to Manning The pennant season has come to a conclusion with the finals and challenge matches providing an exciting finish. Congratulations to the Manning Bowling Club who have won both men’s and women’s Premier flags. Well done to those clubs who have gained promotion in their divisions – may you look forward to the challenge of playing in a new division. The new pennant structure will bring a fresh approach to the game. I hope the clubs will support BWA and enjoy the new initiative.

Annual Forums The annual Forums will be held early in May. The Presidents’ Forum will be held on May 1 at the South Perth BC and the

Women’s Forum on May 9 at the Cambridge BC. This is an opportunity for clubs to raise items for discussion. During the Winter break the Fixtures and Events Committee will be hard at work considering the Field of Play Rules and Conditions of Play. Your input is vital to ensure an effective review.

Australian Side Series I accompanied the men’s and women’s State teams to Adelaide for the annual Sides Series. After a number of sessions with Leading Teams, the group had bonded well and were full of anticipation of the event. Many friends and family travelled to support the players. The teams fought hard throughout the Series, and despite disappointing early losses, finished the competition strongly. Congratulations to all the players for their efforts and conduct during the event. In the lead up to the main event, the women played extremely well in the Test Series against NSW. After a win and two draws in the best of three matches, they won the trophy which was initiated last year.

Awards Night The celebration of the season is to be held at Crown on May 26. I hope you will gather a table of friends together to join BWA on this evening of awards, when I look forward to our outstanding players and clubs being recognised. I wish everyone a safe and happy Winter break.

Exciting phase ahead for competition Congratulations to the winners

Another fantastic pennant season has come and gone and congratulations to those who were successful in winning a pennant or gaining much deserved promotion; commiserations to those clubs who suffered the disappointment of relegation – next season is already not far away.

The Board is currently putting the finishing touches to the Association’s next strategic plan. A critical piece of work that has had the input of Club committees, BWA committee members, Bowls Australia and BWA staff it will guide the Association’s activities for the next five years, as we undergo a challenging time in our history. The primary focus is on assisting our clubs in their future sustainability, through improving all aspects of our club’s operations throughout the state. The Plan will be made available to all affiliated clubs upon its completion in coming weeks.

An exciting phase ahead For over 15 months various committees have worked on adding a new competition format to our pennant scene; a format that was enthusiastically embraced by clubs at various Forums during 2016. This past season has seen a metropolitan pennant finals structure that has enabled an eight team – fourteen week season to be introduced in 2017/18 – not a significant change but one that will add some degree of flexibility to the bowls season. To ensure clubs were not hurt financially a new four week (plus finals) format was added; a format that mirrors the fast pace Bowls Premier League with a series of three, one hour games per afternoon (or morning) in a triples/sets format. Sections of four are geographically drawn up to minimise travel as well as ensuring teams remain in their respective divisions. I for one look forward to playing something a little different and having had the pleasure of being at a BPL series with the Perth Suns I guarantee you will enjoy it!

Our Night of Nights At the time of writing the promotion for our Bowls WA Annual Awards Night had commenced, once again being held at Crown Perth, with the ABC’s Clint Wheeldon again our compere. It is a great night with a full house sign going up every year, so get in early and secure your club’s table before it is too late.

Clubs support Legacy

Gotta Love the Bowlo – the push for increased membership For some time the Association has wrestled with the need to get the message of our great game out to the wider community. For some clubs the Jack Attack program has generated great interest with Manning Memorial being named a joint Bowls Australia Club of the Year on the back of their highly successful program. But we need more. Elsewhere in this edition of Jack Hi you will read of a campaign that is being formulated with creative agency Lateral Aspect that will seek to raise awareness of bowling clubs as social and sporting venues throughout WA. A clear objective of the campaign will be to drive nonbowlers to visit our clubs with a view to doing business in whatever way the club offers. That may be through social membership, function hire, corporate or social bowls or even full membership. More details will be shared with clubs as they come to hand – but the first opportunity to get a taste of the promotion will be at the upcoming Club Forums.

Several weeks ago Bowls WA founded a partnership with Perth Legacy, the iconic not for profit organisation that is dedicated to the welfare of its beneficiary families, namely those that have suffered the incapacitation or death of a spouse or parent during of after service with the Australian Defence Force. Although early days in the partnership, we are pleased to report that $8500 was raised from clubs across the State. The names of these supporting clubs appears on the website, although there were other clubs who supported Perth Legacy directly and have done for a number of years.

***NEWS FLASH*** Bowls Australia announced their Para-Bowlers (Athletes with a Disability/AWD) Selections for upcoming International Events – the Trans-Tasman and the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games leadin event Multi-Nation. Both events will be hosted at Broadbeach on the Gold Coast in May and June.

Multi-Disability Championships The 2017 State Multi-Disability Championships will be held at Kardinya Bowling Club over the weekend of April 29th and 30th. Twenty-four players have registered for this event. Following the State Championships are the National Multibowl Championships at Raymond Terrace Bowling Club NSW from May 21st to 26th. Next year this prestigious event will be hosted by WA from May 20th to 26th at Kardinya Bowling Club. A review of both of these Championships will be available in the Winter Edition of Jack Hi. 6

World Bowls-Laws of The Sport of Bowls The end of our Summer season of Pennants has arrived for most of us in this very large State of ours. Along with the end of that most common format, Fours Sides Pennants, played by most bowlers, we seem to receive similar queries to previous years for which answers provided have either been forgotten or seemingly ignored for a number of reasons. In Australia our sport is covered by several sets of Laws, Conditions and Policies, evolved over a number of years and by which, we are supposed to play to meet internationally appropriate standards. The current overriding rules are the World Bowls Laws of The Sport of Bowls Crystal Mark 3rd Edition, released in Australia in January 2015, complete with a section of Domestic Regulations (DR's), relating to specific aspects of the game in Australia, where allowance within the WB Laws permits relevant variations to suit our conditions. The Crystal Mark versions of the Laws adopted Internationally and in Australia from 2006, have developed with subsequent 4 yearly reviews, with submissions from member countries, resulting in Crystal Mark Versions 2 and 3 – the current version. Improvements from these reviews have brought us the most consistent and universally accepted Laws to date, and there is no intention on the part of the World body, to which Australia belongs along with some 54 other Countries, to conduct another four yearly review, at next years Commonwealth Games – traditionally the time when a lot of the subscribers to the Sport come together. Australian Domestic Regulations cover those variations allowed in the main body of the laws, such as the Law 10.1.3 jack delivery length being permitted under Law 10.5, to be 21 metres in Australia (as opposed to the 23 m length in International games – these distance variations allowed under the DR's can best be seen in summary in Appendix B.4.2 on page 105 of the Law book.) Possibly one of the the most queried aspects of our game involves 'Substitutes' – Law 33.9 For domestic play, Member National Authorities can decide the requirements for introducing a substitute player. Which is then further covered by comprehensive definitions, within the DR's, of Substitutes and when and how they may be used in the Australian context to which all States are bound to comply. DR 2 and all its subsections, from page 114 on, provide full definitions of: 2.1.1 Eligible Member; 2.1.2 Affiliated Member; 2.1.3 Nominated Player; 2.1.4 Intended Player; 2.1.5 Intended Team; 2.1.6 Constituted Player; 2.1.7 Replacement Player and 2.1.8 Substitute. Following the definitions are conditions under each situation these defined players and teams may be instigated.

In addition, there are competition-specific Conditions of Play, about which a lot has been written in previous Jack Hi's but obviously bear stating again. Many disputes arise out of matches, at all levels either because clearly defined Conditions of Play for the competition are not set out or not readily accessible, or simply ignored. So when an issue arises , such as those pertaining to Substitutes and Replacement Players (arguably some of the most confusing rules contained in the Domestic Regulations to start with) there are often conflicts that mar the game. It is important for Controlling Bodies at all levels to formulate and publish relevant Conditions of Play in accordance with the Laws, so that all players and, in particular those Officiating have (and must have) a good grasp of the pertinent actions that may be required to resolve matters when they arise. A guide to formulating these CoPs is available in Appendix A. from page 94 of the Law book. Clubs and/or Leagues could do well by downloading both the annual BWA 'Officials Handbook' and (Metro) 'Fixture Handbook' which contain well developed and tested CoP's for all the kinds of formats of play. These then could form the basis of the local Controlling Body's CoP for whichever event, by simply copying the text from the PDF format off the web, and modifying those parts (as permitted by the Laws) that might not be relevant. It is important to remember that the CoP's MUST comply with the Laws & DR's to be valid, as per Law 60 which clearly states that there can be no 'contracting out' of the Laws. Some Leagues appear to wish to bypass the Laws of The Sport of Bowls by suggesting that their CoP's may select which rules will not be applied, such as ignoring the 'Absentee Player' rule. Law 39.2.3 For domestic play, Member National Authorities can approve regulations which are different from those mentioned in law 39.2.2. Of course this has been done in DR 2.5.1 If, 30 minutes after the scheduled start time for a game, or sooner if the Controlling Body decides, one player is absent from one or more teams in a side and no eligible substitute is available or allowed, the game must continue, however: 2.5.1.1 A team with an absent player plays as though the second is the missing player; 2.5.1.2 The order of play shall be maintained by the second of the complete team playing consecutive bowls; 2.5.1.3 Each player must use the number of bowls specified in the Conditions of Play for that event. So the DR applies to ALL National and State supported competitions and cannot be supplanted by home-grown variations or the remainder of Law 39 since the DR is clearly stated as applicable to Australian (STA) as allowed within the body of the Laws. Law 60 clearly states that there can be no 'contracting out' of the Laws.

Kaleb Walding – the youngest player , to win men s singles title Country week is over for another year with 16 year old Kaleb Walding from Karratha winning this year’s men’s singles title and Jenny Parker from the Northam club winning this year’s women’s singles title. I congratulate Kaleb who is the youngest player ever to achieve this award. Also congratulations to Gnowangerup Bowling Club on winning the champion Clubs award for the men and Northam Bowling Club for the Ladies. Winning the pairs and fours gave Gnowangerup the points to win the men’s award and Jenny winning the singles gave Northam the points over Geraldton and Halls Head. My sincere appreciation goes to all the Staff members and volunteers who offered their time to run these events and the metropolitan clubs who offered their hospitality and their premises for our country players. The Men’s and Women’s Inter Zone Round Robins have been completed and I congratulate the South West Zone who won the men’s and the Eastern Zone who won the women’s.

Pennant finals have been completed and congratulations to all the clubs who won their respective finals. I have asked Denise McMillan to help me draw up a slightly different format for this year’s Country Coaching Scheme. A new format is to be developed on a go-forward basis where each Zone will conduct their own CCES using Presenter and Assessors from within their region. If a Zone does not have a Presenter and Assessor alternate arrangements will be made. This means that each Zone will be able to schedule the CCES according to their own needs. Further work will need to be done within the Zone's to formulate the how, when, where, etc. The Annual Awards Night will once again be held at Crown Perth on Friday 26th May. Clubs who have winning pennant teams will be provided with tickets, so please come along and support the night. I look forward to seeing the country bowlers there.

Evergreen Synthetic Grass (Mark and Nicola Frazer) have recently completed upgrades to three of our greens. One grass green was replaced with a sand filled ULTRA PLUS synthetic surface whilst two of our grass greens have had new banks installed. Prior to engaging Evergreen Synthetic Grass we embarked on a process to evaluate the options available to us for a synthetic surface to replace one of our grass greens. This process included talking with and visiting many clubs who had installed a synthetic green, evaluating the pros and cons of the various surface options including carpet, needle punch and sand filled. We also spoke with several potential installers as we assessed the options of what would best suit our requirements. We also surveyed our top bowlers as to the synthetic surfaces that they preferred to bowl on. At the conclusion of the evaluation process we decided to go with Evergreen Synthetic Grass because we were impressed with Mark’s attitude, honesty and also the fact that he would be working on the job with his team. TIME FOR CHANGE

A revamped calendar, a new up tempo sets play game and a promotional campaign with a clear objective of bringing the wider community to our clubs – these are the initiatives to commence the revitalisation of our game.

Why – what is the problem

The new structure

In the halcyon days of the mid-late 1980’s, there were almost 35,000 'capitated' members in WA, with over 400,000 nationally; that figure has reduced to just over 15,000 and 190,000 respectively today – our sport as we know it, is in trouble and those responsible for it, need to act NOW. Some Clubs are attracting some different visitors as they are used more often for community and social occasions and this in itself is keeping many club doors open. But clearly Local Government is taking a far more financial look at our clubs and given many sit on prime land under their control, is running the corporate ruler over us as they seek greater financial returns. No longer can we be 'just a good corporate citizen' and expect our Clubs to run independent of any scrutiny.

The Association and bowlers alike have wrestled with all sorts of structures over the years; with the last “major” change being the move from 25 ends to 21 ends and the dropping of afternoon tea in the middle; common-sense perhaps but not really ground-breaking. After considerable committee work and discussions with Clubs through the various Forums, the structure presented and agreed upon will have the following: • the maintenance of the traditional pennant format for those that enjoy the current competition(s), but reduce the season from (18) pennant games to (14) and each competition from (10) teams to (8). • This lessening of games will give some degree of flexibility for players that seek it, rather than leave the game altogether, • The introduction of a (4) week triples competition that adds some speed and variety to our standard pennants – run in a (2 set x 5 end) format, with tie breaker if required, that will take approximately 60 minutes. Three of these matches will be played each morning/afternoon against your opposition teams, • Sections of four clubs, regionalised within your division for easy travel. • A division final for those that finish on top of their Section. • The opportunity to play some corporate/social bowlers in these shorter games to try and give them a feel for the game in competition, without first asking them for a 6 month commitment. Who knows this 'soft' introduction just may get you some corporate bowlers 'hooked' into the game.

So what can we do about it? One thing that is certainly out of the question is TO DO NOTHING. Putting our collective heads in the sand and hope that by some miracle the wider community will once again wish to play bowls and join our Clubs as full members is nonsense. We do need to change the way we operate and be seen to operate by the community – perhaps subtly at first – but nonetheless we need to start that process. *A recent survey of new first year bowlers responded that less than 40% want a 15-18 week pennant season. There are two areas that Bowls WA has worked on in order to assist in turning things around; 1. a relatively small but important restructure of the season, including the introduction of a shorter, sharper competition and 2. the formulation of a professionally driven promotional campaign that seeks to drive non-bowlers to Clubs.

Will this solve our problems? By themselves – no they won’t but it is a start to try and make our game more appealing to non-bowlers. The changes try to balance the current enjoyment of the pennant bowler, a new format to create interest and liven the game up, whilst trying to protect clubs financially who depend on bar revenue. This relatively small change to the way we structure the season needs to be supported by a promotional campaign to raise awareness of Bowling Clubs as social and sporting venues throughout WA.

The Campaign The Club Development Committee, lead by Chairman Marc Abonnel, is working with Perth creative agency, Lateral Aspect, to develop a state-wide ‘clubs awareness’ campaign. Planned for a September/October launch, the campaign will feature a ‘find your nearest club’ specific website that will provide information to the community seeking a bowling club experience. In a targeted effort to increase awareness of our clubs, the campaign will work across several media platforms throughout the state and reach a broad demographic. It will be up to clubs to provide a great experience from there! As we progress in developing campaign elements we will keep you informed on both the theme and the roll-out. And yes – it will cover both regional and metropolitan clubs. There we have it – a new structure a faster paced form of the game and a state-wide campaign to get people back to our Clubs. A New Era indeed approaches.

Mosman Park Ladies Masters Singles

The Key Choice Masters singles held at Mosman Park Bowling Club over the March long weekend was a great success. With a large increase in entrants from 42 to 59 this year the field is now a great mix of quality metro and country bowlers. The decision by the tournament directors to split the draw not only encouraged greater participation but facilitated the smoother running of the event across Mosman Parks two grass greens. Hot and humid conditions made it a tough tournament but the players handled the conditions extremely well. After day 1 the initial 32 players had been reduced to 4 with Nerrida Porteous (Sorrento), Audrey Stokes (Mosman Park), Irene Grout (Dudley Park) and Roma Dunn (Dudley Park) getting through to the quarter finals. Day 2 saw the field of 27 was also reduced to 4 with Helen Morss (Manning), Liz Marshall (Sorrento), Kristina Krstic (Manning) and Therese Hastings (Manning) making the final four. The quarter finals took place on Sunday, again a hot and humid day but with more breeze to keep conditions bearable. The quarter finals scores were Porteous beat Stokes 25/16, Dunn beat Grout 21/10, Morss beat Marshall 25/19 whilst Krstic beat Hastings 25/11. The semi finals scores saw Roma Dunn beat Nerrida Porteous 25/14 and Kristina Krstic beat Helen Morss 25/10 The final was a battle between an absolute legend of the game and Hall of Famer; plus last years winner in Roma Dunn; against the young Champion, Australian squad member and BPL team member and State skipper Kristina Krstic. The game did not disappoint with an awesome standard of bowls from both players. A couple of telling ends saw Kristina sneak away and it was never easy for Roma to get a significant score to make up ground once Kristina hit the lead. On one end when Kristina was holding two close bowls Roma’s conversion and movement of the jack saw her holding 4 shots only to see Kristina sit on the jack with her last bowl. Both players showed real class but Kristina’s skills and consistency were the difference at the end of the day. A great game to watch for the spectators and a fitting conclusion to this prestigious event as Kristina Krstic beat Roma Dunn 25/16. Doubleview Men’s Masters

Knott and Packer combine for win The Doubleview Bowling Club again put on a great Master Pairs event which was sponsored again by Nexus Insurance with sectional play on Sunday February 12th and 19th and knockout play on Monday 20th and finals Tuesday 21st February. This event has been going now for some 44 years and would be one of the longest running sponsored Masters event in Western Australia. With good weather and the grass greens in superb condition the players in sectional play and finals enjoyed a wonderful four days of bowls which were at the highest level by some very strong teams from Metro and Country clubs.

The Quarter finals were played and won by Shane Knott and Cody Packer who defeated a father/son combination of Dan and Charlie Slavich 28-2, Pieter Harris and Ken Pride defeated a very strong side in Justin Opie and Daniel Brown in a very close game 18-16, John Sharp and Andrew Ness defeated Matt Mitchell and Shaun Mawdsley 21-7 and then another father/son combination in Peter and Brad Cole defeated Alan Barron and Shane Loftus 15-12. In the two semi finals Knott and Packer defeated Harris and Pride 19-9 and Sharp and Ness defeated the Cole's combination 23-18 after securing a 7 on the 3rd last end. In the final Knott and Packer finished a little stronger defeating Sharp and Ness 17-13 in a quality final befitting a major event. The games were all played in high spirits and good sportsmanship with the Doubleview Bowling Club looking after the players with good lunches, cold drinks, and very good prize money of $5,000. Well done to all concerned and we look forward to seeing you all back in 2018.

Grand Final Wrap Up

Manning win tight contest After eighteen games and a day of finals on the Saturday the day finally came for us to find out the best pennant team in the city with Yokine Bowling Club hosting the 2017 pennant finals on Sunday April 2nd.

Premier League Manning and Osborne Park lined up having finished as the top two sides in the competition to fight for the flag. Form rested slightly with Osborne Park who had won eight of their last ten including a win over Manning away in the second semi-final the previous day. With the rink draw done and the team talks completed the two sides began a titanic struggle for the 2016-17 Premier League Pennant. No one could get a clean break early with the overall score more or less equal for the first 30 ends of the match. But just before the halfway point Shane Knott exploded away for Manning picking up a seven and a four in consecutive ends. In that time the other three rinks held even and all of a sudden Manning went from one in front to twelve. The game was precariously placed as another Manning number threatened to break the game right open for the minor premiers. However Osborne Park not only steadied but managed to start chipping away slowly at the Manning lead. They plugged away so well that at 48 ends the aggregate was square again and remained about level for ten ends. Then the Saints consistency began to show as they gained a nine shot lead over Manning with just fifteen ends to go.

That lead lasted just ten ends as Manning entered the last five ends of the match with 73-69 lead. Osborne Park showed their character to lead again with just three ends to be played. Two ends and an umpire’s measure later Osborne Park led the Eagles by a shot and, despite the best efforts of both sides, an end later the game that had everything was a draw. All four rinks went back out to play an eventful extra end. The first rink to finish was Tom Mitchell’s who picked up five to put Manning well and truly in the box seat. They were immediately followed by ones to Knott and Osborne Park’s Neville Stevens which cancelled each other out. Unable to get five Daniel Trewhella was forced to kill his end to give the Saints a chance. As Osborne Park held two or three shots Manning third Matt Ayres moved the jack back to give Manning shot and forced Trewhella to kill the end again. After he missed with his first Manning skipper Matthew Mitchell trailed the jack again to make it even harder for Trewhella to kill. After another miss the celebrations began as the Manning Eagles won an incredible final to win the 2016/17 flag. The Manning men joined their ladies as Premiers as they won the Premier League double for the second time in three years.

, Men s 1st White Pennant The 1 White Pennant was awarded to Morley for finishing on top of the ladder after the home and away season due to promotion play-offs taking the place of pennant finals. Morley were pushed for the pennant all season by North Beach with the two sides the only teams to hold first place at any point after round three. Morley led for most of the second half of the year but looked to have lost the flag after consecutive losses in rounds 15 and 16. But 15 points in the last two weeks was enough to get back into first place as they won the pennant by four points with a win on the final day. Morley were able to celebrate the flag and a promotion as they defeated Wanneroo 91-75 in the challenge finals to earn a promotion to Premier League.

, Men s 1st Blue Pennant

The Division 1 Blue pennant was decided between Warnbro (South) and Wanneroo (North). Neither side finished on top of their division but were able to win their four team play-offs on Saturday to earn a chance to play for the last 1st Blue pennant. It was an extremely tight final with both teams swapping leads and the margin very rarely getting out past ten shots. Towards the end of the game Warnbro managed to eek out into a double digit lead. They led by eleven with just a few ends to play and held on to win the flag by seven shots 80-73 with wins on three rinks.

, Men s Second Division Pennant

Also playing a pennant final were the years four best second division sides who met at South Perth on Saturday. Both semifinals were decided by four shots with the sides winning two rinks each. Spearwood pulled off an upset to defeat the hosts while Osborne Park had a morning victory over Warwick. The final wasn’t quite as close as the semi-finals as Osborne Park finished up premiers with a relatively comfortable 89-63 victory.

Other divisions In good news for the top ranked teams in 3rd division to 6th division Bowls WA made a late decision allowing those clubs to compete for a Pennant flag. Women’s BCiB Tuesday Pennant Finals

Eagles soar in Premier victory The Manning Eagles have won their third successive BCiB Premier League premiership and a remarkable eighth in the last ten years winning the 2016/17 title on Wednesday March 15th. Manning defeated Mosman Park 64-54 in the grand final at Yokine and won on each of the three rinks. Manning enjoyed an incredible year with their only loss coming against their grand final opponents Mosman Park. They still finished the year 14 points clear of second placed Mosman Park before defeating the runners-up twice in three days to win the flag. Neither side could make any sort of head way early in the game with the scores remaining very tight for much of the first half.

Just after the halfway point was when Manning kicked on as Kristina Krstic’s rink picked up nine shots in four ends while Therese Hastings’ rink put up eight in four at a similar time. With all three rinks now holding leads and keeping their margins relatively steady it looked like Manning would do enough to kill off the game. With Hastings and Helen Morss doing enough to keep hold of their slight advantages until the end of the game a late charge from Kerry Andersen against Krstic wasn’t enough to get Mosman back in it. Ten shots separated the two sides at the end of the game with Krstic’s six shot win the biggest of the game.

The depth of talent available to Manning is evident in the State Side picked for the trip to Adelaide where eight members represented Manning in the grand final. In 1st White the Pennant was awarded to Melville as they finished on top of the ladder after the home and away season with an impressive 15 wins and a draw. However Melville surprisingly didn’t gain promotion, the change to the pennant structure forced them to play in the Challenge Play-offs against the 8th placed Premier League Leeming side who prevailed 65-48 to retain their spot. Safety Bay who finished 2nd in 1st White managed to move back into Premier League defeating Manning 2 63-57. 1st Green saw another triumph for the strong Leeming club as they claimed bragging right for the south of the river. They defeated their 1 Green North rivals Sorrento 54-45 in a low scoring and tense pennant final. Linda Davis and her rink providing the goods for Leeming with an important 10 shot rink win to sway the aggregate. 2nd Division saw a great result for Mt Lawley who took their first pennant since 2004 with a tight 57-52 victory over Kardinya. It was a great season for the Mt Lawley ladies losing only 2 games over the course of the 18 home and away rounds plus two finals. Janice Miles and her rink the real stars for Mt Lawley with a big 32-10 win making a huge difference. Congratulations to all pennant winners for 2016/17.

Osborne Park's Gordon King and Safety Bay's Irene Arndt have joined forces to take out the Senior Recreation Council Over 60's Mixed Pairs. After starting slowly King and Arndt won seven of the last eight ends to beat Michael Zusman (Cockburn) and Debra Rhine (North Beach) in the final at the Osborne Park Bowling Club, the final score was 15-11. This is Irene Arndt's second Over 60's title of the year after earlier winning the coveted Over 60's Singles Title. Gordon King has also previously been in the winners circle with a Men’s Triples title to his name in 2015/16.

Women’s Friday/Saturday BCiB Pennant Finals

Bedford win third Friday night flag The BCiB Women's Friday Night Pennant Competition came to a conclusion at Bayswater Bowling Club when Bedford over powered the home side on Friday 17th March to claim it's third Women's Friday Night flag. Willetton, Bedford and Bayswater all qualified for finals finishing on top of their respective colours during the 14 round home and away season. Teams were ranked based on the points accumulated during these rounds with Bedford and Willetton playing on Friday March 10th in the preliminary final with the winner earning the right to play the top ranked team Bayswater. Bedford claimed home ground advantage as the higher points scorer and proved a bit too good for Willetton in the preliminary final. Karen Turpin's rink winning 19-12 and Wendy Stone 21-11 to move them into the final. In the final Bedford took their good recent form into the match producing a similar effort to upset the home side. Once again both rinks played well to score wins. Karen Turpin's rink with a 18-10 win and Wendy Stone another impressive victory 24-10. Congratulations to Bedford and the other finalists Willetton and Bayswater for a terrific season.

Congratulations to all division winners Congratulations to Sorrento, Melville, Manning and Cockburn who have taken out their respective BCiB Women's Saturday Pennant Grand Finals played Saturday 11th March. With the highest ranked team hosting the respective grand finals, the results show that home ground advantage isn't everything with three of the four pennant flags taken away by visiting teams. Let’s have a look at how they did it. In 1st Division Red Manning hosted the finals however in an upset were beaten by the 4th ranked Leeming side 35-26 in the morning semi-final. In the other semi-final Sorrento scored a 10 shot 35-25 win. Sorrento kept that form going in the grand final to win their first ever Women's Saturday Pennant flag. In 1st Division Blue the closest finals of the day were played in the morning with both semi-finals decided by just two shots. Host club Innaloo defeated Osborne Park 37-35 whilst Melville defeated Leeming 34-32 to set up what looked to be a terrific final. That wasn't to be however as Melville (pictured in main photo) played beautifully and won convincingly 4626 over Innaloo who despite the home ground advantage couldn't match them at any stage. A first for Melville as they had not previously won a Women's Saturday Pennant flag. In second division the upsets continued. In the morning match Manning survived a thriller, the game coming down to the last few ends against Bedford who were extremely valiant. The final score 35-34. Host club Melville were expected to be hard to beat in the final however the Manning girls were on a roll. A 33-10 win by Valerie Still's rink proving the catalyst for a comprehensive 47-23 victory. Third division proved to be the only venue were the home side were able to celebrate. Yanchep inflicted a 64-20 thumping over Mundaring in the morning match but up against top ranked Cockburn the tables were turned. The Cockburn ladies playing in their first ever Saturday Pennant Grand Final were keen for success and played well to secure the flag. The final score being a solid 43-24 victory. • Manning – winners of the 2nd Division final.

BCiB Men’s Midweek Pennant Finals

Bassendean continue dominance The BCiB Men's Midweek Pennant Season came to a close on Thursday 6th April with four pennants awarded and numerous challenge finals played to decide the make-up of next years pennant structure. Bassendean continued to show their strength by winning another Midweek Pennant title - remarkably their fifth in six years for the top side with three of those at Premier League level. They fought out a very close match against Osborne Park who had the courtesy of home ground advantage. Played on a slick green which both clubs enjoyed the David Rhodes skipped rink with Kim Stoner, Mick Erceg and Simon Alden proved the difference with a good 25-14 win to secure the aggregate 61-58. In 1st White Mosman Park were awarded the pennant flag courtesy of finishing on top of the ladder. Sadly for them they weren't able to cap the day off in the challenge final as Kalamunda beat them by three shots to remain in Premier League. 1st Blue saw Morley once again win a pennant flag. The club had recruited strongly and proved far too good for Victoria Park Carlisle with a big 67-43 victory in the final.

A 34-9 win by John Armstrong who capped off an unbeaten season in style along with his team of Anthony Provost, Nigel Minchin and Henry Lim largely responsible for the size of the victory. Warnbro are another club on the rise and added their second pennant flag winning the second division competition to go with a Saturday 1st Blue flag. They had a tight tussle against Mundaring but came up trumps with a hard fought 68-64 victory.

Solargain S&B Challenge

S&B Challenge win to locals The S & B Challenge, which is a mixed handicapped event was held again this year at North Beach Bowling Club on Sunday the 29th January with a new Major Sponsor – Solargain. Other sponsors for the event included the ever generous Glenda Cooper from Dempsey Real Estate, Just Financial Group, Liquor Home Delivery, Bowls World, Globe Growing Solutions and Club member Geoffrey Minchin. Many raffles prizes were also donated for the day by a number of other supporters of our Club and we thank them for their support. All greens were filled with 36 mixed teams, under the handicap format that has existed for all of the event’s history, and we looked forward to a great day. Despite what looked like being a wet day we got through all three rounds of 13 ends with only minimal disruption and all participants enjoyed the competition and fellowship that existing throughout the event. Prizes were awarded for all rink winners in all three rounds and down to sixth place with in excess of $6,000 handed out, which is huge prize money for a one day event. Winners on the day were the team skippered by Ross Dempsey and including Glenda Cooper, Mal Dempsey and Tom Dangerfield with 3 wins and 33 shots up. Runners up were Gary Gregson, Ian Wardrop, Stephen Cribb and Beryl Wansbrough with 3 wins and 23 shots up. Many thanks to the club members who made this a great success, in particular to Laurie Harrington for his tireless work in getting the teams together and to Ivan Campbell for his managing the results over the day. Also to Ros, Nathan and their staff in the kitchen for their great food. The Club hopes to make this an even bigger and better event next year so keep and eye out for flyers and e-mails – you will need to get in quickly if you want to secure a spot.

Justin Opie, Mark Simpson and Daniel Patterson are the 2017 State Triples champions winning Sunday’s final at Wanneroo. They defeated Daniel Brown, Daniel Trewhella and Shane Loftus 23-14 in a high scoring final. More than three shots were scored on ends two, three and four to set the tone for what would be an entertaining game. Brown slightly had the better of the opening exchanges but eventually the weight of ends won put Opie in the lead. After ten ends Opie led 11-10 despite having dropped three triples in the opening half of the game. Six shots in the next two ends, including a four, proved to be pivotal as Opie established the game’s biggest lead at 17-10. However Brown and his side got back in the game two ends later when they picked up yet another three which brought the margin back to three shots. Two ends later the big moment of the match came in the form of a combination of skill and bad luck. Having won the previous end Patterson drew a toucher to put his side in command of a crucial end. Trewhella, who drove well all game, went with his trademark pace and got the bowl but couldn’t avoid the jack going into the ditch with it. It was Opie’s side who drew better the ditch with the comfort that they already had shot and picked up a four. With an eight shot lead and two ends to play the game was just about over, a fact which was confirmed as they scored another shot to carry an insurmountable 23-14 lead. After multiple semifinals and finals over the last couple of years Patterson finally has his first state title to his name. The win gives Opie his second state title with his first dating all the way back to the 1997 State Singles. Simpson collects his first state title outside of the Fours having won three titles between 2010 and 2014. • Justin Opie.

Women’s State Triples 2017

Osborne Park take out triples Osborne Park’s Pam Chalmers, Hailey Adams and Helen Stevens are the Women’s State Triples champions for 2017. They defeated Kerry Andersen, Donna Blackwell and Rinske Butcher in Sunday’s final at Wanneroo in a come from behind win. Andersen’s side made the most of the first half of the game by winning seven of the first eight ends. When they capped off a six-end winning run with a four it looked like the game was just about over at 3-11 after eight ends. Two ends later a looser end gave Chalmers side an opportunity which they took fully to score five shots. Invigorated with new confidence they followed it up with a good three and in just two ends cancelled out the entire first half of the game. They took a two on the next end to lead for the first time since the second end. At 15-13 the match was poised for a tight finish and well and truly delivered as neither side scored more than one in any of the last five ends. The Osborne Park ladies took two of the next three of those ends giving them a 17-14 lead heading into the last two ends. Australian Sides Series Championships

Western Australia finish strongly In an exciting finish to the Australian Sides Championship at Lockleys Bowling Club in South Australia it all came down to the last end to decide which state would be crowned the Alley Shield champions. Tasmania needed to win the end against Victoria to claim their first title whilst South Australia were waiting in anticipation, if the end went to Victoria the crown would go to them. After the head was killed three times Victoria finally ended up with three shots which ultimately gave the title to the host state South Australia who held aloft the shield for just the second time in history having last claimed the title in 1988. The Women's Marj Morris shield was presented to Queensland who dominated the Women's event this year snapping a run of five consecutive NSW victories in the championships. The Queenslanders had secured the title the night before after six straight wins and must have celebrated a bit early as they lost the last match by 31 shots to the defending titleholders NSW. WA finished strongly at the Australian Sides Championships despite deteriorating conditions which included strong winds and pouring rain during the last match against NT. After a tough start where WA went winless against NSW, Victoria, Queensland and Tasmania WA managed to win matches against ACT and Northern Territory with the Women also defeating South Australia. The WA Men finished the series in sixth spot with two wins and five losses.

Best rink for them was the side of Tom Mitchell, Clive Adams, Shane Knott and Cody Packer. Packer was particularly exceptional in the leads position and was duly awarded the Eddy/Wishart medal as the best player of the series for the men's team. State team regular Clive Adams also notched his 200th game and will be awarded the Jim Sullivan medal at the Bowls WA Awards Night on Friday May 26th. Despite a slow start the WA Women can be proud of their efforts during the series. The team which flew out was one of the least experienced in many years without recent regulars Lee Poletti, Therese Hastings, and Noelene Abe who was a last minute withdrawal from the team. WA claimed the WA v NSW shield after a win and two draws against them which included two warm up tests prior to the series. WA's most experienced players in Kristina Krstic and Helen Morss skipped their rinks to five wins and four wins respectively to be the best rinks for WA. Australian squad member Krstic and her third emerging star Hailey Adams were subsequently awarded the Beryl Godfrey award as best players for WA. • All results for each round of the Australian Sides Championships can be found on the Bowls Australia website.

Sheridan’s Men’s Country Week Championships

16yo Walding wins Country Singles Sixteen year old Kaleb Walding is the youngest ever winner of the Sheridan's Men’s Country Week Singles winning the final at Melville in his first ever appearance at the event. The lad from Karratha defeated former state player Mark Simpson 21-19 to win the title. Walding showed how big a threat he would be in the final with an impressive semi-final performance. He set the tone with a four on the first end of his match against York’s Phil Jones and never looked troubled from there to win 21-4. It looked like Simpson would have an equally comfortable win when he raced out to a 13-1 lead against Pinjarra’s Steven Unsworth. However Unsworth slowly got himself back into the match but every time he closed the gap Simpson would steady. The game looked done at 20-13 but Unsworth showed his fight to get within striking distance of a win but Simpson got his shot and a 21-17 victory. Simpson looked the more experienced player as he settled into the final first. He started the match with 6-06 lead but Walding pulled back to level just two ends later as he found his feet.

They were neck and neck and traded the lead four times before Walding finally found some breathing space. Having taken the lead with a three he backed it up with another two ends later and with eight shots in four ends he suddenly had an 18-12 lead. He held his advantage 20-14 but Simpson gave him a real scare with five shots in two ends to make sure the game was well and truly still on. But just like the semi-final it was a little too much to make up as Walding scored on the next end and won his maiden title 21-19.

, Gnowangerup s awesome Fours

The Gnowangerup four of Arthur Crabbe, Michael Johnston, Allan Shaddick and Greg Stewart are the 2017 Men's Country Week Fours champions. They defeated York’s Smith family Justin, Aaron, Hayden and Nathan in the final at Melville Bowling Club. The Gnowangerup team dominated their semi-final against a Mandurah side skippered by Keith Gould by winning 10 of the first 11 ends to lead 17-2. The Mandurah side made a late charge, including a four in the second last end, to make the score more respectable but were much too far behind to make a game of it. The last of the 17 ends was not required as Mandurah couldn't catch up Gnowangerup’s 20-11 lead. The Smith’s played against York team mates led by the inform Phil Jones who also made the semi-final of the singles and quarter final of the pairs. The Smith’s were the better team in the first half winning six ends to three which gave them a 17-5 lead. Jones’ crew hit back strongly over the next four ends to bring the margin back to single digits but still needed to make up ten shots across four ends. They only scored the singles and ultimately the Smith's made the final 21-14. With both sides having been front runners in their semifinals it would be important to see who got out of the blocks quickest. The pace of the game was set early with a four and a three scored over the first two ends.

The first eight ends saw no singles scored and it was Gnowangerup who had the best of it with a 14-8 lead. York win the next three ends to halve the deficit but Gnowangerup re-established their advantage with a three and followed it up with another to take a nine shot leaf into the last four ends. Two two’s from York gave them a fighting chance but then a one from Gnowangerup put them right up against it again. York picked up three of the required six shots on the final end which meant Gnowangerup won the final 21-18. It was the first Country Week Fours win in the club’s history and the first title for each of the team members. Gnowangerup also took the PS Bignell Shield as the most outstanding Club during Country Week with victory also in the Pairs. This was the second time they had won the shield having been runner-up in all three events in 2001.

First for Gnowangerup pair in final Kevin Heberle and Victor Wellstead are the 2017 Sheridan's Men’s Country Week Pairs champions after winning the final at Melville Bowling Club. They became the first winners from Gnowangerup in the event’s history when they defeated Waroona pair Andrew Goodman and Mark Hiller on Friday. They had a relatively straight forward win over Kellerberrin’s Herb McClelland and Ray Griffiths to advance to the final. They scored a six on the second end and were never behind again scoring two threes and a four on their way to a 20-6 win. Goodman and Hiller overcame a poor start in their semifinal angainst the Kojonup pair of Peter Cavanagh and Ron Lloyd who led the game 2-11 after eight ends. The Waroona boys did well to dig deep and won every end for the rest of the match, including two threes to finish in front 15-11 in a narrow escape. Based on the circumstances of the previous game there was a clear favourite and it looked like the Gnowangerup pair would live up to that. A five on the next end for Waroona was the start of another desperate comeback as Heberle and Wellstead only scored one more shot in the last six ends of the game. However despite having momentum on their side the Goodman and Hiller were still down 17-11 with one end to play. Six shots would prove to be too many for one end as they managed to score just half of them. Despite a massive late scare Heberle and Wellstead were 17-14 victors for their first Country Week crowns. 29

Sheridan’s Women’s Country Week Championships

, Northam s Jenny Parker , rules Women s Country Week Northam’s Jenny Parker has won the 2017 Sheridan’s Women’s Country week Singles Championship. Parker defeated Karyn Bryan from Moora 21-20 in a thriller at Victoria Park Carlisle Bowling Club. Bryan settled into the match the quickest as she quickly jumped out to a 7-1 lead however as Parker began to settle the score line started to become more even. Parker took the lead for the first time by scoring the only four of the game to push the score to 9-8. She continued her impressive run to lead 15-9 five ends later. It was then up to Bryan to rally, which she did with four twos in five ends to reclaim the lead 17-16. Though both players were within striking distance of the magic number, 21, the game was still no closer to determining its winner. Parker reclaimed the lead with a two of her own but looked like she might have thrown it away by dropping three on the next end. At 18-20 she kept the game alive by scoring a single which also moved her to within two shots of her own victory. She would get both the shots she needed on the next end to be on the right end of the seesaw at the right time and become the champion. Parker’s maiden Country Week title is also the first for Northam since they won several men’s events in the 1980’s. On the women’s side of the club she is the first winner since 1956 which ended a glory era for the club in which they won nine titles in ten years across various disciplines. Parker showed her credibility as a champion in the semi-final as well by coasting to a 17-5 victory over the experienced Irene Leahy from Boulder. Bryan made her way into the final by defeating Mandurah’s Kerry West 17-14 due largely to back to back fours which took her from 6-11 down to 14-11 up. Along with the Singles title Jenny will also take back to the Northam Bowling Club the Most Outstanding Country Club during Countryweek trophy. • Jenny Parker shows her winning style.

Another title for Geraldton pair Geraldton’s Lee Poletti added to her extensive list of accomplishments by winning the 2016/17 Country Week Pairs with Geraldton teammate Jill Adam. They defeated Busselton’s Helen Paganoni and June Beswick to a solid 15-8 score line in the final. No more than two shots were scored on any of the match’s 17 ends as both sides put in a consistent display. In the end it was the Geraldton side’s ability to find a way to pick up ends that got them the victory. Poletti and Adam won five of the first seven ends which gave them a 7-3 lead and solid foundation from which to build into the final. After four ends of maintaining the status quo the margin steadily increased as Poletti and Adam slowly got out to the final margin of seven shots. The survived a minor scare on the 15th end when Paganoni and Beswick picked up two shots to bring them back into the contest but three shots in the last two ends ensured a Geraldton victory. Poletti and Adam would have been sick of the Busselton shirt by the end of the final having defeated another Busselton pair in Christine Dawson and Karen Gaglia in the semi-final.

They won 20-10 in a very open game in which they scored three triples and a four. Paganoni and Beswick defeated Gnowangerup’s Mary Wellstead and joint Country Bowler of the Year holder Karen Dye 16-12 to make the final. A 7-0 start and a four on the third last end were the major catalysts for their victory. This year’s pairs title is Poletti and Adam’s second together in three years as well as Poletti’s third overall coming on the 20th anniversary of her first. It also marks eight titles for Poletti across all country week events and a third for Adam adding to her fours win in 2014.

Meadow Springs win first title Meadow Springs’ Pat Huckson, Gayle George. Aileen Manderson and June Gmeiner are the 2017 Women’s Country Week Fours champions. They defeated local rivals Jill Kennedy, Julie Crameri, Madeline Wright and Kim Simms from Dudley Park in the final. The key to the Meadow Springs side’s victory was an amazingly fast start that set the foundation for them in the final. A five on the first end set the tone as they scored eleven shots in the first four ends to put their opponents right under the pump from the get go.

It looked like such a start would be insurmountable but a seven to Dudley Park got them right back in the game. Just five ends after trailing 11-0 Kennedy was back level at 11-11 with six ends left to decide the contest. It was then that Huckson and her side rediscovered the scoring touch that had put them into such a commanding position to start the game. more than enough as they picked up singles on each end to finish the game 20-11 in front. Huckson defeated the Margaret River side led by Lyn Colmer in their semi-final 22-10 courtesy of a six end stretch in which they scored 14 shots. Kennedy beat Newdegate’s Bridget Michell 18-9 with half of her team’s score coming from a second end five and a fourth end four. 31

• Denison Seagulls triumphant team.

Seagulls soar to three-peat success Denison Bowling Club created further history last week when the club’s ladies ‘ team won their third consecutive Batavia Bowling League premiership pennant, defeating Geraldton Blue in the deciding fixture of the 2016-27 season. The final was never in doubt, with the Seagulls starting the game in grand style to open up a commanding lead that was never really threatened throughout the 63-end finale. At the halfway stage of the grand final, the Denison ladies created an unassailable 20-shot margin, which they comfortably held for the remainder of the match to eventually win the premiership with a 21-shot buffer (72/51). Despite the eventual margin of victory both sides were the season’s stand-out performers. Denison ladies have had a remarkable three seasons at pennant and league level, where they have equalled the efforts of their all-conquering men’s sides of the early 90s, who achieved the triple premiership result in the then Northern Bowling League. Denison’s achievement will live long in the history books, with the small club’s three first division rinks achieving what looked most unlikely just five years back when

the club struggled for wins. Unlike the bigger city clubs, who move players from year to year, Denison have limited avenues and with the same core of players in the period, their fantastic feat will possibly be never repeated. The fighting spirit over the three titles has been evident, with the group on many occasions emerging from almost impossible positions to reach the pinnacle. Denison this season gained the minor premiership and progressed directly through to the grand final with an outstanding second semi-final 5/1 (78/42) defeat of Geraldton Blue, which gave notice that the history-making series was well in reach. The first semi-final saw Wonthella Gold account for Geraldton Gold 5/1 (60/49) with the Wonthella girls continuing on from their fine finish to the home-and-away series to move to the knockout preliminary final against Geraldton Blue. In an outstanding encounter, just four shots separated the two sides upon completion with Blue claiming the results 5/1 (64/60) to reach the final and a rematch with the Seagulls.

Shield to locals Under perfect skies thirty six social bowls teams took to the greens at Thornlie Bowling Club on Saturday April 22nd to do battle for the Bowls WA Community Shield. After a tough four rounds of competition it was a local Thornlie side who came out on top and were presented with the Community Shield. Congratulations to Simon Lee, Rob Heerema, Tae Fenwick and Peter de Fiddes who put down some great bowls all day to take out this event. Rockingham teams have won this event for a few years and proved competitive once again taking second and third spot with sides 'The Grasscutters' and 'Kars' whilst country visitors from Bunbury 'What’s Up Doc' finished in fourth to grab the last share of prizemoney.

CWC Ladies Pennant final thriller This season’s ladies Central West Coast pennant final was definitely one to be remembered. The final was played on the 7th March between Dandaragan and Leeman. Dandaragan who finished on top of the ladder went straight into the final after beating Jurien White in the semi. Leeman’s win against Cervantes in the Preliminary final paved the way for them to play in their first ever grand final. The final was to be played at Dandaragan but was moved to Badgingarra due to hot weather to make use of their shade cover over their green. On one rink it was neck and neck the entire 21 ends between Kerry McMillen’s team from Dandaragan and Annie Atthowe’s team from Leeman. On the other rink Margaret Johnson’s Dandaragan team took out a good lead early against Sandra Trenowden’s team from Leeman, which they held most of the game. However, Sandra’s team fought back in the last few ends of the game. The result was a tied aggregate and an extra end being played to determine the winner. Dandaragan eventually won the pennant by three shots. Congratulations to the winners Dandaragan and to both sides for their great sportsmanship and treating the large crowd of spectators to a wonderful game of bowls.

Wagin win in the Great Southern A gorgeous warm day greeted the ladies they, and their band of supporters, travelled to Darkan to play their final game of Pennants. The Community Bus was hired for the day so everyone could travel together. Wagin are fortunate to have excess Pennant players so have never had to play short. Unfortunately, not all Pennant players could play the final match as only eight were required. But good sportsmanship prevailed and all ladies came across for the match. Prior to this match, Wagin were sitting on top of the ladder and needed to win one of the two rinks to ensure the Championship. Wagin were playing this final match against Dumbleyung – never a team to be taken lightly. Leanne Cook led one team with Karynne Robinson, Kerry Walker and Bron Hegarty while Gwen Lathwell led her team of Coral Davies, Jenny Ewe and Fe Thompson. Leanne’s team got off to a strong start and, although Dumbleyung came back in the second half, were comfortable winners at 33-20. Gwen’s team had a close match all day with the last end deciding the game in favour of Wagin 19-16. Presentations were held following a delicious lunch hosted by Darkan and their band of helpers. Wagin finished on top therefore winning the Pennant trophy. Wagin also won two League events through the season (Fours and Triples), came 3rd in the Pairs and runner-up in the Singles. These wonderful achievements led to Wagin also being awarded the League Round Robin Shield. Thank you to our supporters who came across and thanks to Kerry Walker and David Robinson for making sure we all got there and home safely. 2017 Women’s WA Country Inter Zone Round Robin

Eastern Zone claim first IZRR What a fantastic weekend at Kellerberrin for the WA Country Zone Interzone Round Robin Fours 2017 hosted by Eastern Zone. Ninety players and officials descended on Kellerberrin on Friday afternoon for a practice and a delicious curry tea. The first events were on Saturday 1st April and were completed on Sunday 2nd April. The Four Zones vying for the Country Shield are Eastern Zone, Northern Zone, South West Zone and Southern Zone. Players travelled from as high as Northampton, Geraldton to Bunbury, Albany, Esperance, Boulder, Kalgoorlie and all Wheatbelt towns in between. Games were very tight over the two days and the results weren't known until the last two rinks finished playing. The Winners were Eastern who have never won this event. Gift to reach younger set Story by Aiden Boyham – Telegraph Sport.

The Lions Club of Rockingham has donated 12 sets of lawn bowls to the Rockingham Bowling Club in a bid to help boost the club’s youth bowling programs. Lions Club president Dennis Burges made the donation to bowling club patron Verna Nicholls and fellow patron and City of Rockingham Mayor Barry Sammels at a special presentation last Monday night. The donation, which cost about $4000, was made to help boost the bowling club’s continued efforts to offer bowls coaching to younger players in the community. The club has recently been involved in teaching students from Kolbe Catholic College and South Coast Baptist College the sport of lawn bowls. Coach Chris Tibbits said the game did not discriminate against anyone and was open to all. “Lawn bowls is not just a game for the old,” he said.

“It’s a family game; the recommended starting age is 12 years and upwards with no age limits. It’s non-contact, non-aggressive and can be played by pretty much anybody, male or female.” The club is also looking to coach students from public schools, with students from Rockingham Senior High School’s Education Support Centre thought to be interested in becoming involved.

Wheatbelt winners are grinners Congratulations to this clever band of ladies, the Central Wheatbelt Bowling League team who won the Inter League Round Robin fours on the weekend of 4th and 5th February 2017. This is the FIRST time ever that we have brought it back to the Wheatbelt (the competition started in 1983). A great achievement from the girls from Beacon, Bencubbin, Mukinbudin, Trayning, Nungarin and Wyalcatchem Bowling Clubs. Marlene Garn Skip, Marg Jefferies, Robin Tilbrook, Lyn Yates, team won 3 out of 4, having a lapse in the last game against South Eastern Joanne Lancaster’s team of Eileen O'Connell, Vicki Haines, Clare Smith, team also won the same 3 out of 4. Leeanne Gobbart’s team of Gail Prosser, Michelle Miguel and Anne Cashmore won 2, and Vicki Miguel Skip, Di Maddock, Sue Adams, Trish Jolly winning 1. Di Davies went as our reserve and had a great learning weekend under Jenni Bunce who was responsible for collating all the scoring information – a great job by both ladies. Beryl Jennings was our wonderful selector and accepted the shield on behalf of the Wheatbelt League. The scores were very close so nobody knew who would win until the last minute and the roar from our ladies nearly raised the roof! Joy Robinson did a terrific job all weekend selling raffle tickets and being a great supporter. Final scores were Central Wheatbelt 6 points 9 rink wins, -4 shots, Avon Valley 6 points 9 rink wins –9 shots (so close)

South Eastern 4 points ,Goldfields 2 points 4 shots, East Avon 2 points –7 shots. Teams were chosen for the Inter Zone RR4s with Clare Smith, Lyn Yates and Trish Jolly being chosen as leads, Di Maddock and Jo Lancaster as thirds and Marlene Garn as skipper. Marlene and Jo were also chosen for the Country vs Metro game in Noelene Abe’s team, Lyn lead in Sian Smith’s team. Jenni Bunce as Eastern Zone Vice President will go as Manager. Well done to all these girls, a really great achievement. The Kellerberrin Bowling Club did a magnificent job of catering and hosting the event on Central Wheatbelt's behalf.

Batavia win Ladies ILRR series

Northern Zone's ILRR Fours held in March as always it was pretty hot in Dalwallinu. Everyone got through Saturday, but on Sunday the heat rule had players off the greens after lunch. When play resumed it was much cooler, followed by light rain, and by 17 ends thunder and lightening ceased play and by the time everyone reached the club house it was raining in earnest. Despite the unusual weather conditions it was still a great weekend of bowls. Results: 1st - Batavia League; 2nd - Central Midlands; 3rd - Central West Coast; 4th - Moore District; 5th - North Midlands. Champion Rink: Only team to win all games was Norma Follington, Audrey Williamson, Gayl Wilson, Lyn Joyce.

Changes in your Assets If you have a significant increase or decrease in the value of your estate, this may change the way you want to distribute your assets. Perhaps you have recently acquired a new investment property or started a new business, or you may have new pension plans or insurance policies that will form part of your estate. Any major change in your assets should prompt you to review your will to check that you are still satisfied with the way you intend to distribute your estate.

Changes in your Family There are many potential changes in your family that might require you to update your will. For example, if a new child is born or adopted, or you get married and acquire stepchildren, you will need to review your will. If you have had a child since you wrote your will, you should review it and name a guardian in case anything happens to you and/or your spouse. Generally speaking, if your will specifies that your estate should be equally distributed among your children; any new children will be included even if they were born after you prepared your will. However, it’s a good idea to check your will after the birth of each child to make sure there is no ambiguity in your instructions. Once your children are of age, you can also revise your will to make them executors if you wish. If you get married or divorced, this is also an important time to update your will as sections 14 and 14A of the Wills Act 1970 states that a marriage and/or divorce will automatically revoke a Will.

Changes in your Priorities Your personal feelings and priorities may change over the years, and this can affect the way you want your estate to be distributed. Perhaps you wanted to leave something to your best friend from university, but you’ve had a falling out since you originally wrote your will. Or maybe you have been reunited with a long lost cousin or school friend and you’ve decided you’d like to leave them one of your assets. Another possible scenario is if you have become passionate about a particular organisation – such as a church or charity – and you want to bequeath some of your assets to it.

Changes in your Location The legislation applying to estate taxes varies from state to state, particularly with regards to the way they treat property. So if you move to a new state, you should review your will to see if any changes need to be made based on the laws of that state.
