Bumper edition for season end Another big season has come to a close which has resulted in a bumper 44 page edition of Jack Hi. A host of competition results are including in this edition and congratulations to the many individual bowlers and clubs who have tasted success in 2017-18. Every pennant winner across Western Australia is listed here with the Men’s metropolitan pennants covered on pages 14-17, Women’s metro on pages 26-29 and Country pennants on 40-41. Congratulations to all Winners What a busy few months we have had, culminating in the pennant finals. Congratulations to all pennant winners – you have made your clubs proud! Congratulations to the winners of recent State events, especially to Kristina Krstic from the Manning BC and Warren Holt from the Wagin BC on their success in the State Singles. Bowls WA has conducted many events over the past few months and I would like to thank the clubs for supporting these competitions. The Association appreciates the efforts of all clubs in their hosting of State events, and especially the clubs who conducted Country Week sectional play and finals. With over 1600 bowlers participating in Men’s and Women’s Country Week, the preparation of greens, catering and club hospitality involves much time and effort. Thanks to the tireless work of Pieter Harris and the Match Committee, both Country Week's ran smoothly and successfully. A full report on both Country Week's is to be found later in this edition. I would like to congratulate all winners of Country Week events, especially Justin Smith from York and Anne Blechynden from Bunbury on their success in the blue ribbon Singles event.

Kristina – a world champion Kristina Krstic is a world champion following her win in the World Youth Championships held at Broadbeach in February. Our sincere congratulations are extended to Kristina on a wonderful achievement.

The Chair of State Selection, Helen Stevens accompanied me to Jurien to see the quality players on show.

BPL in New Zealand The BPL to be held in New Zealand in April will see a new team to represent WA. With generous new sponsorship from Dyenamic Sublimation, John Slavich, Clive Adams and Helen Morss will do battle for honours against the country’s best. With live TV coverage by Foxtel, this is an event not to be missed.

New State Teams selected Congratulations to our recently selected men’s and women’s State teams. The National Sides Series is to be held in Darwin in early May. The best wishes of the State go with you - enjoy the fellowship of players from other States and we wish you every success. Ken Pride and I will be attending State Consultative Body meetings with Bowls Australia and the other States in Darwin. We look forward to hearing the developments of the Whole of Sport IT program, soon to be released.

Submissions for Club Fees received Submissions for the review of the base fee for Club Affiliation have been received both from metropolitan and country clubs. It is encouraging to see the interest generated in the quest to find an equitable system for all clubs moving forward. The Review Committee, consisting of both metropolitan and country representatives is considering all options and is making good progress. The Forums are to be held in May at venues TBA. I look forward to these information sharing meetings. Agenda items are welcome.

Annual Dinner The Annual Dinner is to be held on May 25 at Crown. I urge you to come along to join our Award winners and to celebrate the past season. Special guests, including BA President Daryl Clout and well known personality Karen Murphy will be in attendance. • Kristina Krstic and Aaron Teys claim World Under 25 Singles titles.

Inter Zone competition In March I travelled to the Wickepin BC for the women’s Inter Zone Pairs, and to the Jurien BC for the women’s Inter Zone Fours competition, where the cream of country ladies was competing.

Preparations for the new season With the season winding down, bowlers will be heading north or maybe just taking a break. Bowls WA committees will be at work preparing for the new season. There are lots of clubs offering a game during the coming months so whatever your choice, may you travel safe and enjoy your leisure time.

Gotta love the Bowlo in full swing The season is quickly coming to a close, but the sport has certainly had some great publicity over the past several weeks. As I write the second round of disciplines for the Commonwealth Games is underway, a day after the Women’s Fours secured a terrific Gold Medal. In addition the Men’s Triples grabbed a Silver in a fantastic advertisement for the game against the strong Scottish side – the coverage has been well received and with plenty of it, hopefully the sport will get a kick along in terms of visitors to our clubs. On that the Gotta love the Bowlo ads have been sprinkled amongst the coverage of not only the Games, but also some key spots during the evening news – again fantastic exposure that hopefully is flowing through to clubs with increased visitors, social bowlers, function enquiries etc. The campaign will be fully reviewed in the weeks ahead and a report provided. Clubs are urged to be a part of that process and make comment on any aspect they believe appropriate. Given it has been the most expensive campaign undertaken in Australia, clearly we are keen for constructive feedback.

Annual Dinner and Awards Night Our Annual Dinner and Awards Night tickets are now on sale with a great night guaranteed at Crown. This year we will have as our special guest Australian legend Karen Murphy, who is joint hosting with Bowls Australia several BCiB Forums during the week preceding the Dinner. (Information will be forthcoming shortly if not already out and about). These Forums will focus on the future of the sport and the direction Bowls Australia will look to take in increasing both membership and participation. As always we look forward to acknowledging our leading players, clubs and volunteers for the year passed at the Dinner. Clint Wheeldon who is doing a great job commentating for ABC Radio at the Games will again be our Master of Ceremonies. BowlsWA • Jack Hi • Autumn 2018

Club Fees submissions review On a slightly disappointing note, only ten clubs and one country league (Batavia) forwarded a submission in relation to the review of the current Affiliation Fee. Given its importance to members and the future of clubs, the Review Committee was a little perplexed as to the reasons why there was no further correspondence – perhaps the majority are happy with the current system to continue – after all the majority of clubs as per the last Annual Report increased their Active Membership, thereby pocketing their old “capitation fee”. Irrespective, the Review Committee is now considering the submissions and working on a model that is as balanced as it can be to metro and country clubs. This is not an easy task with clubs sizes varying from a dozen members to over 300 and clearly with very different operating priorities. Preliminary discussions will take place at Metro Presidents’ Forums in late May, with Country Zone AGM’s hopefully a means of discussing with country delegates and clubs. Any formal changes to the current system will be presented at the July Annual General Meeting for further comment, with implementation via a vote of members (clubs) at a Special General Meeting in October of this year, in preparation for implementation in the 2019/20 season. This year will see the opportunity for individual members to become involved in the decision making process, with a number of positions declared vacant on various committees. The Bowls Management Committee will see a streamlining of elected club representatives from four (of each gender) to two, a resetting of personnel on operational committees including Fixtures and Events, Umpires and Greens and Infrastructure and two year terms for some Board positions. Members are urged to consider whether they believe they have a formal role to play in the administration of the game at a state level – there certainly appears to be many who informally offer their advice each year !

2018 All Abilities State Championship Two of the categories played for selection in state sides for the National Bowling Arm Challenge and the Physical Multibowl Nationals. 2018 will be the second year that WA has had a representative side attending the National Bowling Arm Challenge – the side will be announced this coming Monday 16th April at 9 am. The Challenge requires a side of 15 (three teams of 5) plus 2 reserves playing Singles and Fours along with Pairs and Triples over the four day tournament. The state representative physical disability side playing the Multibowl Nationals run under Disability Sport Australia, being hosted in WA for the first time from May 20th to 25th, will be the fifth time WA has attended. The side also announced at 4 pm on Monday 16th April. Each state is allowed a side of 10 players – 6 men and 4 women – WA was able to select 6 men and 2 women.

These games are the classification pathway to international bowling opportunities such as the Commonwealth Games where Australia para-triples have only recently accomplished Gold. The only way to potentially be involved in such opportunities is to get on the green, and apply yourself to the game! Our Deaf and Intellectual participants were not seeding for a state or national side – they played for the joy of the game and being able to compete amongst their peers in a rare opportunity for state recognition. And what fun was had!!! Lots of laughter and plenty of competitive bowls marked the weekend with players participating in Singles and Pairs in the Deaf, Intellectual and Physical categories while the Bowling Arm players took part in Singles and Triples. It was a fight to the end.The winners of each category for Gold and Silver are as follows:

Bowls WA Multibowl State Side announced Bowls WA is pleased to announce the State Side selected to play at the upcoming National Multi-Bowl Championships in May. This event is being hosted in WA for the first time in its history (30 plus years) at Kardinya Bowling Club from Sunday 20th to Friday 25th May. The Multi-Bowl Nationals, run under the auspice of Disability Sport Australia, is the pathway to international competition for bowlers with a physical disability. All players must receive a classification prior to participation, B5 to B8, and only those classified are eligible to compete in para-bowl games internationally. A great example is our very recent para-triples team who competed in the Commonwealth Games (and got GOLD… CONGRATULATIONS and OI OI OI AUSTRALIA!). Each State and/or Territory is allowed to enter a maximum side of 10 players – 6 men and 4 women. çongratulations to the WA selected side. WA Umpires accredited internationally Being an Umpire can be both rewarding and sometimes frustrating, but March has seen one of the most rewarding periods in WA Officiating – with five Umpires accepted for and passing the World Bowls accreditation of International Technical Official. This is the next step available to those Umpires that wish to progress to a level where they can officiate at National and International level. Among those ITOs selected to be part of the Commonwealth Games Officiating team, where a percentage are selected from the host Country, two were included from the only four WA had before. The International Technical Official, is a World Bowls qualification, recognised in Australia and all member Countries. It is the highest available rating for Umpires and is available for application by Officials who prequalify – firstly as National Umpire then being able to demonstrate a prior, two year range of competent, practical experience in the major disciplines within the current accreditation to National Umpire. That encompasses Marking at State level at minimum; Measuring, including more complex measures using the World Bowls approved equipment and having a thorough knowledge of the Laws of the Game – without reference to the Law Book (i.e. closed book exam, though not necessarily remembering the actual Law numbers!). Not being a Bowls WA controlled accreditation, we are not always made aware of when applications are due, and that was particularly true as far as this recent round of assessments. An off-hand remark led to a number of applications actually being able to be submitted in February, following the acceptance of those Umpires being able to Mark in all knockout rounds of the State Singles – all part of the gradual recognition of the importance of Markers that has been brought about by the new Officiating, competency-based Course system introduced in January 2015. The assessment process can only take place when a minimum number of acceptable applicants are available to justify the World Bowls Assessor flying to Perth. So if any current Umpires wish to consider applying for next year, they should make themselves known to the BWA Umpires Committee, who will keep a list of people willing to officiate at State events and, in particular, Mark (correctly) during State Singles and other premium events.

Measuring …And other decisions during this past Pennant season generally appear to have been up to par with few complaints trickling in to the Umpires Committee. However, a few glaring issues require Umpires (and Measurers) to review their Officiating Manual, particularly as to the correct procedures

when using trammels; calipers and feeler gauges. Newer Umpires should seek out those Officials of their club who can help if they have the slightest qualms in the application of the various items of equipment which should be available in the Club's required Umpires kit.

Trammels If a trammel measure is called for, remember to chock any bowls on their running surface; when using a trammel – line up the trammel from behind the bowl to ensure the correct alignment, having previously adjusted the length of the trammel from outside the bowl-to-jack area, such as to leave about a 5 cm gap in which to apply the caliper measure.

Tie Breakers Remember, all finals including Pennant elimination finals, are knockout games and those that result in tied aggregates require that a tie-breaker be played from the same end/s that have just been completed – (Law 28). An interesting question from the NZ Umpires training courses: How can the last bowl of an end be correctly delivered, come to rest touching the jack (which is on the surface of the green) and yet the opposing team scores 6 shots? No prizes for the correct answer, simply an exercise in arriving at the most appropriate decision/s through knowledge of the Laws. **(Answer on page 25)

Country bowlers excel in Bowls events Another bowling season has come to an end. This year we have seen country bowlers excel in Bowls WA Events with Warren Holt from Wagin winning the State Singles and Champion of Champion Singles, Aaron and Nathan Smith from York the State Pairs and Gary Keep from Collie winning the Over 60’s singles. The Smith family has taken all before them with congratulations going to Justin Smith from York on winning the country week singles. Further congratulations to the Manning family from Moora on winning the country week fours and the Geraldton Pair of Joe Criddle and Jeff Eaton winning the country week pairs. Well done to Anne Blechynden from Bunbury Bowling Club on winning the Singles title, the Beacon team of Sandra Miguel and Ann Cashmore on winning the Pairs Title and the Busselton team of Kerry Scott, Karen Gaglia, Chris Dawson and Linda Burgin on winning the Fours Title. Congratulations to Geraldton Bowling Club on winning the PS Bignell Memorial Shield (Men) and Busselton Bowling club (Women) on winning the most outstanding club at country week. Thanks to those people who filled in the survey during Country Week. The results will be discussed at the next Country committee meeting which will be held on May 25th. Also thanks to the Metropolitan clubs, volunteers and Bowls WA staff who offered their services during Country Week. The Mens IZRR was held in early February and congratulations go to the SW Zone on winning the Round Robin for the second year in a row. The Ladies IZRR fours were held in Jurien Bay and congratulations to the SW Zone for their win and Eastern Zone for their win in the IZRR pairs. A reminder that the Country Coaching Enhancement Scheme is on again this year and those players who are interested, could you get your names in by the end of April. Contact your Club or League for the nomination forms or go onto the Bowls WA website and download the form. These forms can be sent to the Bowls WA office or your local secretary. The Northern and Eastern Boundary review has concluded with the recommendation from the review committee that there be no change. However if there are issues that arise, the committee will look at these on case by case basis. Dates for next year’s ILRR and IZRR have been selected. These dates can be accessed on the Bowls WA website under Country Committee minutes. Evergreen Synthetic Grass (Mark and Nicola Frazer) have recently completed upgrades to three of our greens. One grass green was replaced with a sand filled ULTRA PLUS synthetic surface whilst two of our grass greens have had new banks installed. Prior to engaging Evergreen Synthetic Grass we embarked on a process to evaluate the options available to us for a synthetic surface to replace one of our grass greens. This process included talking with and visiting many clubs who had installed a synthetic green, evaluating the pros and cons of the various surface options including carpet, needle punch and sand filled. We also spoke with several potential installers as we assessed the options of what would best suit our requirements. We also surveyed our top bowlers as to the synthetic surfaces that they preferred to bowl on. At the conclusion of the evaluation process we decided to go with Evergreen Synthetic Grass because we were impressed with Mark’s attitude, honesty and also the fact that he would be working on the job with his team. Men’s State Triples

Walker, Pauling and Marsland claim title Scott Walker, Glen Pauling and Dale Marsland have won their first state titles with victory in the Henselite State Triples on Sunday April 8, 2018. They defeated Tom Mitchell, Shane Knott and Cody Packer in a high scoring final at Osborne Park Bowling Club. The tone for the game was set in the first two ends where Mitchell started with a four before Walker responded with a three. Throughout the match a count higher than three was scored seven times with only three singles. The early part of the match was very even with Mitchell holding a slight 8-10 lead after the eighth end. Across the next three ends Walker scored a pair of twos and a four to take the lead for the first time in the match and extend it to 16-10. It was the largest lead of the match, but it was also short lived. Mitchell responded with his own four to bring the deficit back to two and followed it up with another five shots in three ends to retake the lead 16-19 with just three ends left. Walker only needed one of those to retake the lead picking up four on the very next end.

Following it was a three giving Walker a four shot cushion going into the last end, and with the way the game was going he looked set to need every bit of it. Mitchell entered the end looking for his third four of the game but could only manage two. This was enough for Walker, Pauling and Marsland to claim their maiden titles 23-21 in a high scoring topsyturvy affair.

Women’s State Triples

Krstic, Merz and O Brien on fire in final The 2018 Henselite Women’s State Triples champions are Manning’s Kristina Krstic, Laura Merz and Robyn O’Brien. They defeated Renate Coote, Maureen Cooney and Shelley Radcliffe 22-4 with an impressive display in the final at Osborne Park on Sunday April 8, 2018. The largest number the Manning side picked up was a three which happened just once, instead they built their score by winning end after end and not allowing Coote into the game. Krstic scored the first five shots of the game before Coote was able to get on the board in the fourth end. Krstic immediately re-established her lead by picking up a three to lead 8-2 after five ends. A single to Coote on the next end offered some hope that her side could get the match back to level but the Manning side had none of it. They won the next four ends before they conceded another single and at 13-4 it was a long road back for Coote.

Nine shots across the next five ends was enough to put the game to bed with plenty of time to spare as Krstic, Merz and O’Brien ran out winners 22-4. It was the second state title for the season for all three players as Merz and

O’Brien were part of the victorious fours side while Krstic won the singles. It puts the trio towards the top of Connie Hicks contention, particularly Merz and Krstic who also finished runners-up in the state pairs.

WA to challenge at Sides Series Bowls WA Selection Panel has announced the Men’s and Women’s teams representing Western Australia at the Australia Sides Championships in Northern Territory at Darwin and Nightcliff Bowling Clubs May 2nd-5th 2018. Both teams contain only minor changes from the last series. The Men’s team which finished sixth behind surprise winners South Australia last year has seen Cody Packer (Osborne Park) elevated to skip for the first time for WA with Dave Rankin (Doubleview) and Scott Walker (South Perth) returning to the team whilst Anthony Williams (Manning) will make his WA debut. The retiring Pieter Harris along with Corey Bessant and Daniel Patterson were not picked in the team. The Women’s team has just two changes with Linda Warburton (Mosman Park) and Robyn Jolly (Manning) returning to the team which finished fourth in South Australia. Men’s BCiB Pennant Finals

• Doubleview Premier League are all smiles after winning the flag.

Doubleview causes upset

The finals of the BCiB Men’s Saturday Pennant Competition were played out with eight different clubs securing flags from Premier to sixth division. The top grade finals were played at Yokine Bowling Club on Sunday 25th March in overcast conditions, on good greens and in front of a healthy and supportive crowd.

, Men s 1st White Pennant

Premier League In Premier League Doubleview caused an upset when they defeated Osborne Park who came into the final having won an incredible 16 games in a row. Osborne Park were looking good for the title and just passed the half way mark had opened up a 48-41 lead however from that point on it was all Doubleview. The rink of Ryan Moyle who was having a blinder with Kyle McIlroy, Ben Willesee and Brad White winning 28-13 doing the most damage in the overall 15 shot victory. Dave Rankin and his rink also overcame a slow start to have a good 7 shot win against Gary Caffell whilst Scott Edmonds won his rink by 1 after a great tussle with Cody Packer. Shaun Mawdsley and his rink of Pat Caffell, Michael Dewson and Gordon King the only Osborne Park winners defeating Charlie Slavich team by 9 shots. It was a particularly emotional win for many of the Doubleview players as veteran Lindsay Thorn thanked the players for their commitment during the season and dedicated the win to Ros Slavich who passed only a few months earlier. She had attended Doubleview Premier League games for over a dozen years with husband Danny and sons John and Charlie playing for the club.

• Sorrento – Men's 1st White champions.

In One White two clubs will join Premier League for the first time after Sorrento and Warnbro played off for the flag. Sorrento had proven to be the team to beat all the season with 15 wins and only three losses and a big win over Warnbro in the semi-final. Warnbro however took the challenge right up to them in the rematch but were eventually over powered in the finish going down by 12 shots. For the winners the rink of Brad Ball, Lance Martin, Brian Lucas and Frank Tyson was a standout winning by 13 shots over John Trewhella whilst Shane Loftus had a handy 4 shot win and Shane Rixom got home by 2 shots. Warnbro’s best rink on the day was Linday Strange’s team who won by 7 over Chris Lander. No doubt both teams will be keen to give Premier League their best shot next season as several players get their first taste at the top level.

, Men s 1st Division Blue

The final was a cracker in which Cambridge won by 10 shots, the match was close for most of the way however Cambridge eventually got the upper hand to record a great win. Cliff Wooldridge with Ted Leahy, Wally Manning and Phil McShane had a big 19 shot win over Craig Standley as the only winners for Cambridge.

, Men s Third Division

• Spearwood – Men's 1st Blue champions.

The 1st Blue final proved to be the game of the day as division leaders Warwick and Spearwood battled it out to the final bowl. Spearwood were in control for most of the match leading by over 10 shots at stages before Warwick issued a serious fightback and levelled the scores as the finish approached. With just one end to play Spearwood held a one shot lead however when the skips crossed to play it was Warwick holding 5 shots and looking like stealing the win. Enter Spearwood skip Nik Silich who played he bowl of his life with the perfect draw shot to creep around the pack and land right on the jack much to the delight of his team mates. Opposition skip Geoff Hinge had a chance to drive it out but missed meaning Spearwood claimed the flag by just two shots. Best for Spearwood were the rinks of Boris Yakas and Ivan Unkovich who won by 7 and 5 respectively. For the defeated Warwick Geoff Hinge’s rink won by 8 shots whilst Jeff Post team got home by 2.

, Men s Second Division

• Stirling – Men's 3rd Division champions.

Midland Morrison, Stirling, Roleystone and Hollywood Subiaco topped their respective colours in 3rd division thus qualifying to play in the pennant finals. Midland Morrison hosted the finals courtesy of a great year where they collected 106 pts in winning 14 games however they were upset by a determined Stirling team in the semi-final. Stirling recorded a great 82-68 victory. In the other semi final Hollywood Subiaco had an 8 shot win over Roleystone. In the final Stirling proved to good with a 15 shot win, coincidently that was the margin record by Ante Vlahov with his rink of Marko Dragicevich, Mick Posa and Branko Vujich who won 27-12 to be the heroes for Stirling.

, Men s Fourth Division

• Cambridge – Men's 2nd Division champions.

In Second Division Cambridge capped a great year with a flag as they returned to 1st Division along with other colour winners Bassendean, Hilton Park and Rossmoyne. The finals series was held at Bassendean after finishing the home and away series on 108 pts the same as Cambridge but with a slightly higher percentage. In the semi-finals hosts Bassendean were upset by Hilton Park who recorded a solid 85-76 win whilst Cambridge won by 19 over Rossmoyne.

• North Beach – Men's 4th Division champions.

In 4th Division North Beach claimed a well deserved pennant flag. The club has had a very impressive season across all its divisions. They had six teams playing in either pennant or promotion finals in Men’s Saturday Pennants winning a flag in this grade along with three other promotions which shows great depth throughout the club. 15

They won their semi final against Valley by 20 shots to come up against Rossmoyne who had a narrow 2 shot win over Melville in their semi final. The grand final was a high scoring affair however North Beach always had the answers running out 7 shot victors. Jack McKinnon and his team of Garry Booker, Ken Colledge and Ian Milne the best for them with an 11 shot rink win.

After a great final which could have gone either way it was Kalamunda who came out on top by 3 shots. Richard Hill with Colin Ryniker, Tony Taylor and Bill Sutherland the main difference winning 23-9.

, Men s Sixth Division

, Men s Fifth Division

• Hilton Park – Men's 6th Division champions.

• Kalamunda – Men's 5th Division champions.

With five colours in this grade an extra round of finals was needed in 5th division. In the final series Kalamunda hosted the Saturday finals where Wanneroo defeated Mundaring 75-38 in the qualifying final. In the afternoon semi-finals Kalamunda then defeated Wanneroo 64-61 and North Beach 1 defeated Kwinana 72-61. The two winners then played off at Yokine Bowling Club Sunday morning.

Bassendean hosted the finals of sixth division after winning 10 games with a draw in the 14 round home and season finishing as the highest points scorer in the division. Other colour winners Hilton Park and Wanneroo played off in the morning to see who would play Bassendean in the grand final. As It turned out Hilton Park stormed into the final with a big 49-25 win. They kept that momentum going in the final against Bassendean upsetting them with a 48-34 win. Michael Flanigan with Graham McKenzie, Doug Andrews and Ron Horsman had an exceptional finals series winning their semi final 27-14 and the final 31-14 for Hilton Park.

Merz wins first singles title

• Renate Coote, 2018 Women's 100up winner with runner-up Sue Neill.

Women’s 100up Singles

Coote wins 100up Renate Coote is the 2018 Women’s 100up Singles champion going one better than her runner up performance in 2015. She defeated Sue Neill 100-89.5 in the final at Osborne Park Bowling Club on Friday February 16th . Neill had a very difficult run into the final defeating Irene Arndt, Kathy Gobbart and Lisa Featherby consecutively. Coote had a different source of difficulty to contend with, playing two Mosman Park club mates in Trish Cunningham and Linda Warburton during the knockout rounds. The first couple of ends were very even before Coote put together a dominant run to take a decisive advantage. Over a ten end period she outscored Neill 65.5 to 34.5. Overall she had a 73.5 to 46.5 lead and was the same distance from victory as Neill was from her. But as is the nature of the game things changed very quickly with Neill landing back to back 9-1 blows to bring the margin back in to just 11. In the next period of the game Coote found reward for playing bravely by running at the jack when 9-1 down twice. One kill and one 7-3 end win were the results and helped her get some control back on the scoreboard. At 93.5-76.5 time was running at for Neill but a trail of her own resulted in a 7-3 and showed that the game may still be very much alive, despite the score still reading 96.5-83.5. However Coote nailed her first bowl on the next end making things very difficult for Neill. She did have a chance to make 10 though with Coote unable to cover a nest just behind the jack. However she played too much weight and sailed wide to leave Coote holding game, which she took, without playing her last bowl. Coote described herself as 'absolutely thrilled' to have won the title after the game. 18

• Laura Merz – Masters Singles Champion with Bev Baker.

Manning’s Laura Merz has broken through to claim her maiden singles title winning the prestigious Key Choice Mosman Park Master Singles. Having established herself as a regular in the WA State team Merz was absolutely thrilled to have claimed the title adding to her ever expanding bowls resume which includes a 2016 State Pairs championship. The 25 year old who was the youngest competitor in the field played the oldest in 89yo Gloria Bell from Kwinana in the opening round winning 25-4. That victory spurred her on to defeat another five players to claim the title. Merz toughest test came in the quarter final where she defeated past winner and former Australia representative and Hall of Famer Roma Dunn (Dudley Park) 25-24, after which she won her semi-final defeating Pauline Bourne (Sorrento) 25-13 and finally she defeated renowned singles exponent Bev Baker (Mosman Park) 25-19 in a great final. Bev had earlier defeated Jenny Parker (Northam) 25-21 to make the final. Thankyou once again to tournament sponsors Key Choice along with the many volunteers involved who helped with a capacity field of players. Champion of Champions Holt is the man

Great Scott again

At the Champion of Club Champions at Yokine the big story is Wagin’s Warren Holt who became only the second man to win the State Singles and Champion of Champions in the same year. The only other man to do it is Hall of Famer Harry Snook who completed the feat back in 1946. Holt is also the first country winner since 1999 when Eaton’s John Cowin won the title. He defeated Melville’s Travis Leahy in an extremely tight final where the final margin of five was the largest of the game. The lead changed hands several times in the opening ends before Holt levelled with a three and a four in consecutive ends to lead 10-6. He was able to keep a slight advantage for the rest of the match as every time Leahy began to close the margin he would produce a good end to keep the advantage often doing so with a multiple count to eventually win 25-20.

In the women’s event Capel’s Bev Scott was back to claim her third Champion of Champions title in her fifth final. A regular on the podium at major events Scott won her first major title for three seasons defeating surprise finalist Lisa Smith from Perth and Tattersalls. Smith who was originally from Perth took up bowling just over three years ago in South Australia before moving back to WA last year. Despite her brief bowling career she showed plenty of natural talent including an impressive 25-22 semi final win over Osborne Park’s Hailey Adams. However in the final Scott showed her experience to take control of the game quickly and didn’t let Smith back in. She won seven of the first ten ends to set herself up with an 11-3 lead before continuing on to a commanding 18-5 score line. Smith picked up a couple of late threes, but Scott had already done the damage and won 25-11.

Novice wins to Leeming and Manning players Over at Morley the novices also had their Champion of Champions this weekend. In the women’s competition Leeming’s Marjorie Blake accounted for Quinns Rocks’ Lee-Anne Simm 21-9 scoring four counts of three in the process. After having the better of the opening exchanges, she led 10-6 and secured her victory with eight shots in four ends to take an 18-6 lead. And for the Men Manning’s Del Evans and Mosman Park’s Steve Swanson had a terrific battle which Evans won 21-18. No player led by anymore than four shots throughout the game and they swapped the lead six times. Towards the end of the game a three from Swanson locked the score up at 18-18 to set up a tense final few ends. 24

The Future of Bowls Forum Bowls Australia with the support of BCiB are running a series of Open Forums entitled the 'Future of Bowls Forums'. Fifteen Forums are planned to be held through out Australia to coincide with major events around the country. Spotted at the Commonwealth Games Western Australian’s Sue Hogg and Elaine McDonald were part of the 42 International technical Officials (22 from Australia and 20 from around the world) that officiated during the recent Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast which saw Australia win 5 gold medals in bowls.

Women’s Tuesday BCiB Pennant Finals

• Manning – Premier League champions.

Manning prove too strong in final

The BCiB Women’s Pennant season came to a close on Wednesday 14th March at Yokine Bowling Club with seven clubs claiming pennant flags. Steady rain during the course of play coupled with very humid conditions made it a bit tougher than usual for the players however plenty of great bowls were played.

Premier League At Premier League level it was regular grand final combatants Manning and Mosman Park involved. Manning looked extremely strong on paper with eight current state representatives however they were challenged strongly by Mosman Park all game. Manning did prove too strong in the end with the rink of Helen Morss inflicting a ten shot victory over Bev Baker to be the biggest winner on the day. Amazingly this is the ninth Pennant flag for Manning in the last eleven years such has been their dominance in the Women’s Premier League.

Women s 1st White Pennant

• Victoria Park Carlisle – 1st White champions.

1st White showed the strength of Victoria Park Carlisle who will return to Premier League after finishing top of the competition and recording an impressive 65-45 win claiming victory on all three rinks. It was a brave effort by Leeming to make the pennant final after they finished in fourth spot for the season but they found the Vict Park side just too strong in the grand final.

, Women s 1st Green - North

• Wanneroo – 1st Green North champions.

1st Green playoffs were the closest contests of the day. In the North final an upset occurred when Wanneroo came from 3rd place to knock off a strong Joondalup team. The match was close all the way. In the end Wanneroo found the will to win and did so by just five shots. The rink win skippered by Shirley Claxton who triumphed by six the main catalyst for victory. The 1st Green South final was even closer. Manning appeared to have the edge with a slender three shot lead with just three ends to play however Safety Bay played some great last ends. After picking up two singles the margin was reduced to just one shot. , Women s 1st Green - South

Second division was won in brilliant fashion by Midland Morrison who amazingly lost only one match all season. They had two tough finals defeating Warwick by four shots in the semi final and then Scarborough by six shots in the grand final. All those teams had outstanding seasons and will be promoting to 1st Division along with Rossmoyne. This is the first Women’s Tuesday flag for Midland Morrison since 2001.

, Women s Third Division

• Safety Bay – 1st Division Green South champions.

After the first two rinks picked up a shot each it was all to be decided once again on the last few bowls. Safety Bay held two good shots as Manning skip Suzanne Griffiths played weight through the head slicing the jack and bowls however remaining two down. Her opponent failed to add a closer counter giving her a chance to draw shot with about two foot of room. However the pressure of the situation was just too much and the bowl was wide giving Safety Bay a very hard fought pennant triumph.

Women s Second Division

• Mosman Park – 3rd Division champions.

In third division Mosman Park was able to secure the pennant over Kwinana by 20 shots. Again another team with just one loss for the year the Mosman Park 3rd division team had a great year showing outstanding consistency to win so many games. They will now be promoted along with Kwinana, Bayswater and Osborne Park into second division.

, Women s Fourth Division

• Midland-Morrison – 2nd Division champions.

• Perth and Tattersalls – 4th Division champions.

Finally in fourth division Perth and Tattersalls had a great finish to the season winning the flag. In a very tight 4th Division Blue home and away competition they only secured a finals birth in the last round when they managed a draw against Maylands whilst top of the ladder Hollywood-Subiaco failed to get a point against Bedford. Women’s Saturday BCiB Pennant Finals

Women pennant champions crowned Another four clubs were presented with Pennant flags as a successful BCiB Women’s Saturday Pennant competition was wrapped up on Saturday 17th March. The winning clubs really earned their flags as all finals proved to be very close contests, below is how the finals unfolded in each grade.

First Blue flag for Osborne Park

1st Red flag to Sorrento

• Osborne Park – 1st Blue Divsion champions.

• Sorrento – 1st Red Division champions.

In 1st Red Sorrento claimed back to back titles at Manning Memorial Bowling Club. All three finals were very close starting with the semi finals in the morning. Such is the depth at Manning that their two sides played off for a grand final berth with Manning 1 doing slightly the better to win by 6 shots. On the same green Sorrento managed a tough 5 shot win over a gallant Melville to go through to the grand final. The grand final result also saw Sorrento winning by six shots as both rinks prevailed narrowly. Pauline Bourne had a very tough 2 shot victory over Karina Gale whilst Nerrida Porteous had a slightly bigger four shot win.

1st Blue saw Osborne Park Bowling Club win their first ever Women’s Saturday Pennant. After finishing on top of the ladder they hosted the finals and proved too good. A handy nine shot win in the semi final by Osborne Park over Bedford set up an exciting encounter with Scarborough who had demolished Morley by 15 shots in the other semi final. The grand final was another close encounter however Osborne Park held the advantage as the final ends were played out. Carol Watson and Deborah Watson played out a 17 all draw which meant the win by Helen Hitchcock over Caroline Soro was the difference with the Osborne Park rink winning 18-13.

2nd Division to Dalkeith Nedlands In 2nd Division Dalkeith Nedlands hosted the finals after an impressive 12 win 2 loss season in 2nd Orange saw them finish half a point ahead of 2nd Lemon winners Mosman Park. In the semi-final Mosman Park were just edged out by 2nd Lime winners Mundaring. Just one shot separated the teams with Mundaring winning 36-35. The final however proved to be all Dalkeith-Nedlands with Heather Hince winning 20-11 and Wendy Ireland recording a comfortable 21-13 victory to cap off a great season for the club in Women’s Saturday Pennants.

Finally in 3rd Division the title wasn’t decided until the very last bowl. Division winners North Beach, Forrestfield, Bayswater and Warwick played off for the flag at Warwick Bowling Club. In the morning semi finals North Beach recorded a good 16 shot win over Forrestfield who had a great first season in Women’s Saturday Pennant. Bayswater also progressed upsetting hosts Warwick by five shots. Bayswater skip Judith Lee recording a massive 23-5 win for her club but her best bowl was yet to come. The final proved to be a nail biter as North Beach and Bayswater played bowl for bowl, and after Emma Sinatra and Bev Cotte played out a 19 all draw it was left to the rinks of Judith Lee and Wendy Robertson to battle for the flag. They went into the last end at 16 all. North Beach were looking the likely winners as they held shot but skip Judy Lee still had a bowl to play and she played a beauty to take the winning shot much to the delight of her team mates. The win was the first flag for Bayswater in this competition. 29

2018 Under 18 Championships Wrap

Young guns compete at Stirling

The Under 18 State Championships were held this weekend under the roof of the new Stirling indoor green. Twenty juniors from all across the state competed across triples, pairs and singles over the course of the weekend April 21st and 22nd, with more than half competing in their first junior championships. The first event to be completed was the pairs with the final played early Saturday afternoon. Patrick Quinlan (Osborne Park) and Cory Day (Carnarvon) were seeking their second pairs together having won in 2016. They came up against Ashton Hagboom (Goomalling) and Aiden McAuliffe (Mullewa) who defeated defending champions Kaleb Walding (Dampier) and Jack East (Rossmoyne) 10-7 in the semi-final. It was Quinlan and Day who had the better game in the final, winning their second title together 16-7. The pairs also had a plate competition for those knocked out in the opening game. It was won by brothers Aiden and Calin Sear (Dampier) 15-1 over Matthew Park (Quinns Rocks) and Kieran Conway (Pemberton). The triples saw Quinlan and Day in another final joined by Rockingham’s Marcus Simpson, looking to defend the title they won last year. They faced newcomers Aiden and Calin Sear and Kieran Conway. Quinlan, Simpson and Day dominated the game as they went back to back, winning the final 24-3 against their less experienced opponents. In the singles Quinlan was in the final once again, his third for the weekend and his fourth singles final in succession.

His opponent was 2017 Pairs winner Jack East, who was in strong form with a number of wins. Quinlan was looking for his first singles since 2015, having been defeated in the last two finals. East, playing in his first singles final was soon down 5-0 as Quinlan started brilliantly in the opening ends. However he kept his cool and stuck with his draw shot to close the gap and slowly take control. He played a series of brilliant ends where he rarely had a bowl further than two feet away as Quinlan resorted to drives without a lot of success as the lead moved to 16-8 in favour of East. Quinlan then hit some good form himself winning three ends to close the gap to 16-12 before East replied with a three to re-establish his good lead. East kept his composure with some great bowls played by both players before eventually closing it out with a lovely draw shot to take the title. East won 21-15 in the last of an impressive string of wins in the knockout rounds. As well as Quinlan he knocked out defending champion Walding as well as Simpson, two of the other major favourites. From this event the Under 18’s state squad will shortly be announced and later the side will be picked to represent Western Australia in Queensland in October. • Swan's Mitchell Corps in action at the Under 18 Championships.

New champions for SRCWA Mixed Over 60’s Pairs The 2018 Seniors Recreation Council State Over 60’s Mixed Pairs has been won by Sam Perica (Cambridge) and Lea Mias (Melville). They won the final 16-11 over husband and wife Ross (Sorrento) and Trish Cunningham (Mosman Park) at Sorrento Bowling Club on Thursday 19th April. The first half of the game could not have been any tighter with the scores locked at 6-6 after 9 of the 16 ends. It was on the tenth end when Perica and Mias scored the only big number of the match, a four which gave them the biggest lead of the game. They maintained their lead as the two sides traded singles for the next four ends and led 12-8 with four ends to go. A two on the fifteenth end put them in a great position with a six-shot lead, however the Cunningham’s halved the deficit in the next two ends to get themselves a chance at 14-11 with an end to play. But Perica and Mias held strong, picking up two shots to win the match and competition at 16-11. It’s Mias first state title at any level with her previous best being runner up at the 2017 Champion of Champions. What To Consider When Separating Your Assets During A Separation/Divorce When you separate from a spouse or de facto partner, you may need to consider how to divide your ‘marital’ assets between yourself and your spouse or de facto partner. Separation of assets (also known as property settlement) is a different process from getting a divorce. There are time limits that apply to applications in the Family Court for property settlement. An application for property settlement can be made (by agreement or otherwise) any time from separation and up to one year from the date of a divorce order taking effect (without requiring leave of the Court). In the case of a de facto couple, an application for property settlement can be made (by agreement or otherwise) any time from separation and up to two years following the date of separation. Separating your assets can be a complicated process, so you should get reliable legal advice from an experienced family law lawyer as soon as possible. Here’s what you should consider when you commence the process of separating your assets.

Document or estimate the value of your assets, liabilities and financial resources When you and your spouse/partner separate, it is useful to obtain copies of all your financial documents such as recent bank statements, credit card statements, mortgage balances, superannuation statements and share certificates. Try to estimate the current value of any vehicles, property(ies), superannuation, business(es), family trust(s) and/or other asset(s) or investments you or your ex spouse/partner might have an interest in, regardless of whether it is held in joint names or sole name(s), as well as the value of any liabilities. In the event there is disagreement between you and your ex spouse/partner as to the current market value of any property, you may wish to jointly instruct a valuer to provide you with an independent valuation of your asset(s), unless the disagreement can be resolved by way of free market appraisal(s), internet searches on redbook/carsales.com.au, etc. It is recommended that you give your lawyer copies of all your financial documents and valuations obtained, and notify them of the date that you and your ex began living together, and the date of separation.

If both parties agree on how to divide assets Where both parties can agree on how property settlement is to be effected, the Family Court does not necessarily need to get involved (other than making orders by consent if a Form 11 Application is made seeking this). There are a number of advantages to having consent orders made by the Family Court, including an order that is legally binding and enforceable, nominal stamp duty on the transfer of a jointly owned property, etc., which your lawyer can explain to you in further detail. Reaching agreement early on can be beneficial for both you and your ex partner, as it will save you the expense and stress of going through the Family Court. Family Dispute Resolution/mediation and other alternative dispute resolution processes may assist you and your ex partner in reaching an agreement. It should be noted that the Family Court will only make property settlement orders that are deemed to be just and equitable to both you and your ex partner.

If both parties do not agree If you and your ex partner are unable to agree on how to separate your assets and liabilities, you can apply for financial orders in the Family Court. There are, however, pre action procedures that should be followed before making such an application, which your lawyer can explain to you in further detail. Ultimately, if agreement is not reached at the various stages of the proceedings, the Family Court will usually hear evidence at a trial from both you and your ex partner (and from any witnesses that either of you may decide to call, and from any expert witnesses appointed along the way) and a judicial officer will decide how to divide your marital assets in a way that they consider to be just and equitable. The Family Court has very wide powers to alter the property interests of you and your ex partner and the judicial officer has a wide discretion to apply the law to the facts of your particular case. The Family Court doesn’t follow any particular formula when they decide on the separation of assets, however they will consider the following steps (in addition to any other factors deemed relevant to your case), in accordance with the Family Law Act 1975/Family Court Act 1997, to arrive at what the Court deems to be just and equitable (if it is deemed just and equitable to make orders): • identify and value the assets, liabilities and financial resources of each party; • identify and assess the financial contributions made by each party (including initial financial contributions, financial contributions during the relationship and post separation, any inheritances, gifts or payouts that either party received, any loans from family, etc); • identify and assess the non-financial contributions (such as improvements to the property, etc); • identify and assess the contributions made by each party as homemaker and parent (if applicable); • identify and assess the future needs of each party, by considering their age, health, care of children (if applicable), financial resources, income earning capacities, etc, and decide whether any adjustment should be made to the contributions based assessment by reason of these factors.

Protect yourself with the right legal advice Getting good legal advice is the smartest thing you can do when going through the process of separating your assets. Even parties who agree on how to divide their assets should still seek legal advice regarding how to make their agreement for property settlement legally binding. Sheridan’s Men’s Country Week Championships The 91st edition of the Men’s Country week championships saw over 1000 bowlers descend on the metropolitan area to contest, singles pairs and fours with three new champions being crowned as the finals were played at Doubleview Bowling Club on Friday 9th March. York’s Justin Smith storms home for title York’s Justin Smith is the 2018 Sheridan’s Men’s Country Week Singles Champion to become the third and final of the Smith brothers to win a major title this season. Brothers Nathan and Aaron won the Men’s State Pairs in December with both finals being won at Doubleview Bowling Club. Justin had to defeat Aaron in the semi-final in a 21-20 nail biter to make the final. He defeated 2012 champion Matt Pennington 21-19 in the final where he came from behind late to take the title. Smith’s approach aided him in the tricky condition with his willingness to play bigger weight making his conversions very effective. After a tight start Pennington took control through the middle part of the game thanks to consistent draw play. But Smith began to match • Justin Smith. Pennington on the draw and had a more effective game style when he was down, hitting a lot of jacks. Slowly but surely the gap closed until the two combatants found themselves locked at 19-19. Down two good shots Smith used the drive to get it down to one before nailing a front toucher with his last. Pennington had to try to draw cold as any weight had a high chance of costing him game, but understandably couldn’t manage it. Down to a close shot again on the next end Smith drove the jack into the ditch finishing about a metre and a half away. Pennington’s next shot just rolled into the ditch as did Smith’s final bowl, showcasing the green’s finish past the tee. Pennington’s final delivery was a touch wider and despite having perfect weight could not get back in bounds giving Justin Smith the title. In his acceptance speech Smith was particularly grateful for the support shown by the sizeable York contingent. He’s the first singles winner from York since the early days of the competition in 1931.

Manning family from Moora claim Fours title

• Phil, Bruce, Peter Manning and Michael Rodan won the country fours title.

The Manning family comprised of Bruce, Phil, Peter and Michael Rodan have taken out the 2018 Sheridan’s Men’s Country Week Fours. The Moora crew won Friday’s final over Geraldton side Shane Guidice-Nairn, Michael Ford and Kim and Jon Trotter. Phil and Peter won their second Country Week Fours together having previously won back in 1996. Like all the finals there wasn’t much to separate the two sides early but a four mid-way through the game gave the Moora side a five shot buffer and they didn’t look back. They grew their lead all the way out to 15-6 with just two ends to play. Needing two big numbers the Geraldton boys were forced to go for kills which Giudice- Nairn managed twice, the first time out the side and the second time up and out over the bank. On the third go however a good head was built with no clear way to make a number or to get the jack. Giudice-Nairn ripped again and hit the bowl he was going for but still ended up one down. This left the Moora boys up by ten with just one end to play. With an insurmountable lead they claimed the game and the title 16-6 having played well in windy conditions. Phil Manning summed up the spirit of country week when accepting the trophy. “Country Week is what we play bowls for in the country,” he said. “It’s such a great time to come down and play with your mates and you meet all your mates who you haven’t seen for the 12 months before. “The beauty of it is you can’t remember their name so you call them mate because they are your mates.” BowlsWA • Jack Hi • Autumn 2018

Geraldton’s Criddle and Eaton win Pairs

Beacon brilliance in first title for the club

Geraldton’s Joe Criddle has become a two time Country Week Pairs champion by winning the 2018 competition with Jeff Eaton. Criddle won his first title in 2012. Their win is of added significance with Eaton becoming the first player to win a major title in Western Australia using a bowling arm. They defeated the Busselton pair of Matt Pennington and Jim Paganoni in Pennington’s first of two finals for the day. The Geraldton pair won the first two ends before giving up a good three by Pennington to be level early. Pennington and Paganoni scored the next three shots as well but after that it was Criddle and Eaton who well and truly controlled the game. A 13-3 scoring run saw Geraldton go into the final end seven shots clear of their opponents who needed a miracle. It looked especially worrying after 11 bowls had been played when they found themselves three down with one on the bank however Paganoni got the jack to a good spot trying to kill the end. The downside was that with the jack in the ditch they couldn’t kill the end and all bowls must count. They looked a very faint chance heading into the last bowl however, possibly holding five but needing to get a bowl now more than two metres short to count as well as the last. In the end though it was a practical impossibility and as it turned out the Busso boys only held four anyway. This gave Criddle and Eaton the title in a 16-13 victory, continuing Geraldton’s strong country week record and playing a big part in them being given the PS Bignell Memorial Shield as the most outstanding club at the tournament. Sandra Miguel and Anne Cashmore are the 2018 Sheridan’s Badges and Engraving Women’s Country Week Pairs Champions. Miguel and Cashmore who are sisters are the first winners from Beacon, one of the state’s smallest clubs. The had to play defending champions Lee Poletti and Jill Adam in the final and defeated the Geraldton ladies 16-10 to claim the trophy. Both teams came into the match on the back of 13-10 semifinal wins and the final promised to be an enthralling contest. The Beacon team defeated previous winners Julie Lindsay and Roma Dunn from Dudley Park whilst the Geraldton pair defeated Capel’s Bev Scott and Sue-ellen Payne in the semifinals. In the final the Beacon ladies started strong with five shots in the first two ends to give them a healthy early break. From there they were able to keep their opponents at arm’s length for most of the match, generally maintaining a 4-6 shot lead. The closest Geraldton got was 6-4 but a three the next end to Beacon re-established the advantage. While the match never really blew out into a big score Beacon proved equal to every challenge thrown at them to maintain gap. At the 14 end mark the score got out to 14-7 and with just three ends to go it started to look very tough for Geraldton. They picked up three shots in the next two ends to give them a chance on the last end, needing five for a win or four for an extra end, but were unable to find a number. In fact, Beacon scored two shots after Cashmore trialled jack with her last bowl to well and truly put the game to bed and become the Country Week Pairs champions 16-10. Miguel and Cashmore’s victory is Beacon’s first Country Week win of any discipline and any gender in the 90 year history of the event. 35

Sheridan’s Women’s Country Week Championships The 73rd edition of the Women’s Country week championships saw over 500 bowlers descend on the metropolitan area to contest singles, pairs and fours with three new champions being crowned as the finals were played at Osborne Park Bowling Club on Saturday 24th March. Blechynden shines Busselton just magnificent at Country Week Anne Blechynden is Bunbury’s sixth Sheridan’s Badges and Engraving Women’s Country Week Singles champion winning the final at Osborne Park. She defeated Busselton’s Jenni Bruce 21-17 in the final with a magnificent comeback after struggling early. Both ladies were in red hot form following massive wins in each of their semi-finals. Blechynden defeated Albany’s Karen Miller 17-3 while Bruce beat Boulder’s Irene Leahy 17-4. It was Bruce who best kept up her form as she shot out of the blocks to take a commanding lead. She was halfway to victory in just eight • Anne Blechynden. ends leading Blechynden 1-11 but little by little Blechynden found her way and got back into the match. It started with a few singles before a two and a four in successive ends brought the deficit back to one. She quickly levelled the match at 13 shots each and was never behind again in the race to 21. A three on the next end gave her the lead and another two ends later brought her within an end of victory at 19-15. Three ends later Blenchynden had completed a stunning comeback to win the match and the title 21-17. She scored outscored Bruce 20-6 to comeback from a very bleak position early in the game. Blenchynden’s win gives Bunbury a share of second place for most country singles titles with Northam, second only to league rivals Busselton on eight. However Bunbury now have the outright lead for most individual winners with all five of their singles wins having been won by different players, overtaking Busselton on four.

Busselton’s Kerry Scott, Karen Gaglia, Christine Dawson and Linda Burgin are this years Sheridan’s Badges and Engraving Women’s Country Week Fours champions. The defeated the Moora team of Robbie Gardiner, Alison McPherson, Chris Van der Ende and Karen Bryan in Saturday’s final at Osborne Park. The Moora ladies had been hoping to make it a Moora double in the Country Week Fours after their male teammates won the men’s tournament earlier this month. They looked in the kind of form to do it too, destroying their Tammin semi-final opponents 33-0 in just thirteen ends to get to the final. It was one of those rare matches where everything went right for Moora and Tammin despite playing many good bowls couldn’t hold any shots throughout the match. Busselton had an equally impressive but slightly more reasonable 18-6 victory over a Geraldton team headed up by Lee Poletti. The Busselton side needed to kill the Moora momentum early in the match which they did, getting the jump on their opponents. After six ends they led 10-1 putting them into a position from which to control the rest of the match. Moora immediately mounted a charge though scoring five shots in the next three ends to get the score back to a much more manageable 10-6 with six ends to play. Unfortunately most of their good work was undone on the very next end as Busselton picked up a three to get the lead back out to seven and over a shot an end. The match was tight from then on as nothing more than one was scored in the last five ends. Moora had the slight better of it but it wasn’t enough to close the gap and they needed six to win on the final end of the game. Busselton however had the answers and scored a single themselves to run out 15-9 winners. Busselton’s previous women’s fours title was 53 years ago, during the ladies club’s golden era in the 50s and 60s. With Busselton’s Jenni Bruce being runner-up in the singles the club was also named the Bowls WA Best performed club of Country week. This award began in 1982. BowlsWA • Jack Hi • Autumn 2018

Irene goes back to back in Singles

Irene Arndt has gone back to back in the Women’s Over 60’s State Singles defeating Jenny Bruce 21-15 at Manning Bowling Club on Friday 9th February. The Safety Bay star backed up a fantastic performance to make the final of the open event to become the second lady to win two Over 60s titles. She won her semi-final over Sorrento’s Elizabeth Marshall impressively to a score of 21-7 whilst Bruce had a tight 21-20 over club mate Helen Paganoni with no player leading by more than four at any point. Remarkably Arndt won less ends during the final but scored numbers on the ends she did win and no more than twos on the ends she lost, a hallmark of her consistency. She raced out to an 8-0 lead in just three ends but lost the next six for Bruce to draw level again. Much of that hard work was scuppered as Arndt picked up a four on the very next end to re-establish a break. She would more or less control the next six to take a 20-11 lead in the 21-up game. Bruce was able to force a few nerves by winning the next three ends to take the score to 20-15 but Arndt was always likely to score eventually and wrapped up the match an end later.

Men’s O60s Singles

Gary – the first Country Winner Collie’s Gary Keep is the first country winner of the State Men’s Over 60’s Singles championship winning the final 21-15 at Sorrento Bowling Club on Wednesday 7th February. The historic moment was guaranteed when his opponent Peter Nicolay (Halls Head) defeated Steve O’Neill, the last remaining metro player, 21-15 in the semi-final. It continues the country’s most successful year in decades following Warren Holt’s open singles win as well as Aaron Smith’s pairs title with brother Nathan. Keep was on fire early in the match and completely dominated the early part of the game. He shot out to 12-2 lead in some style, consistently nailing the jack. Nicolay on the other hand struggled under the • Gary Keep. pressure put on him by his opponent, having a number of loose heads in the opening stanza. It looked like the final could be over quickly with Keep consistently holding numbers. But in a game where the first bowl was key Nicolay started getting on it first more often to rally. He evened up the heads and got to 16-5 to stop the haemorrhaging. The end that was to follow was Nicolay’s best of the match yet as he held good shots before a good result got Keep the shot. A bomb of a reply from Nicolay however earnt him four shots which he followed up with a two and three to get the score back to 16-14. With the game back on Keep got back to nailing it to score three and Nicolay answered with a single. With the score at 19-15 Keep held one and drew inside Nicolay’s closest beautifully for game and tournament. Keep wasn’t content though and wanted to keep going before being reminded the match was only 21 up. Keep was humble when accepting the trophy. “It’s a privilege and an honour to be champion,” he said. “When you enter these events, I think you just think ‘oh well, I’ll come and have a hit out’. But it turned out really well and there were some really good bowls played.”

Boulder win 2018 Goldfields flag It has been nine years since a Boulder side has won a Pennant flag over Kalgoorlie in the Goldfields League and needless to say the celebrations afterwards were immense! The difference for the Boulder Meerkats might have been the newly recruited mascot Marvin who was picked up this season during a carnival at Wanneroo and the team has been winning ever since. With a mix of established and newer players in the side the Meerkats are hoping to keep the momentum going for a few years to come!

An unbowlievable year for Busselton ladies What an amazing year it has been for the Busselton Bowling Club. Busselton had three divisions in Ladies’ Pennants and amazingly all three divisions made it to the Grand Finals. • First Division finished first on the ladder! • Second Division finished first and second on the ladder! • Third Division finished first and second on the ladder! All the Grand Final games were played at the Eaton BC.

First Division were playing Harvey and won the flag; Both Second and Third Divisions had to play a derby so were guaranteed of winning a flag! We don’t know of any club that has been able to have all their divisions playing in the Grand Finals in the one year. Three flags – It was a remarkable achievement!!! Well done ladies – a truly unbowlievable year!!!

Big things happening at the new

Visit their website https://bdcclub.com.au/ In an old and decaying clubhouse with only around 360 members it was an ambitious project but with the help of local council, the club and its volunteers a brand new facility in Linton Street North began construction in mid 2015 with the facility eventually opening in January 2016. The Byford area and surrounding districts are enjoying a population boom with the town doubling its size in the last ten years and expected to grow further as housing developments continue to fill up with new residents. The club was keen to take advantage of that with a new and improved facility and since the opening the club which has the Byford Bowling Club, Pool Club and Classic Car Club as sub-clubs has become a social hub of the Byford Community. It has quickly expanded mostly through word of mouth to over 10,000 new members who are regularly enjoying the new club house and facilities. Other community organisations using the club include the Home and Community Care Service group, Rise Network who specialise in aged care and the Southern Districts Services.

The club also offers its board room free of charge for non for profit groups. The club now has a 150 seat Restaurant with a professional chef and kitchen team providing meals to members 7 days a week.

Byford and Districts Country Club

"There are further plans in place to encourage local schools to include bowls as part of school activities through Jnr. Jack Attack…" It is a very family focused club catering for a growing area with a kids playground along with an indoor kids room and kids club every Sunday 12.30pm to 3.00pm. It is a great place for young families to enjoy. As membership has continued to boom the management and board have continued to add staff and now has 46 employees on the books – every one of these is needed especially during the peak periods such as Friday night when the club is packed full of members. The Bowling club are enjoying the new eight rink under cover green built by BGC with a needle punch carpet surface installed by Berry Bowling Systems. Despite losing some members during the transition period the bowling club which is small has already increased its playing membership significantly through the help of professional coach Kelli Wray. The club have run several Social Bowls Days and Come and Try events to convert social members into bowlers along with a thriving Corporate Bowls competition. There are further plans in place to encourage local schools to include bowls as part of school activities through Jnr Jack Attack. • Coffee and cake.

The bowling club ran a very successful open carnival last September with most teams already committing to return this year. The Country Club has run several successful special events including functions for Melbourne Cup, Halloween, Octoberfest and a special 80’s night along with a big 60th Anniversary event which saw Mental as Anything perform. The club also has regular live music across the weekend and has just developed a brand new website. Byford Country Club is open 7 days a week 9am to 10pm. 88 Linton Street North, Byford.
