Blake Nairn – Australian Champion for 2022
with Aaron DELAPORTE Another big season is about to close and in this edition of Jack Hi, we celebrate some fantastic on green achievements. The Australian Championships held recently at Broadbeach Queensland was arguably WA’s best ever. Congratulations to Blake Nairn and the Mt Lawley Men’s Fours team who were simply awesome in winning gold. Whilst all other WA representatives can certainly hold their heads high playing some great bowls – all that action is covered on Page 28 and 29. AFGRI Country Week played in March was a huge success, congratulations to all those who made finals and well done to the winners. The Women’s Country Week is on page 30 with the Men’s on page 31. Congratulations also go out to all the clubs and players who took home a pennant in the 2021-22 season. Pennant winners for the metropolitan area are listed on Page 4 with a full wrap of Women’s Competition on pages 12 and 13 and the Men’s Pennants on pages 14 and 15. Country Pennant winners are shown and listed on pages 33 and 34. Of course, plenty of other events and club news to read about in this edition.

Sad loss of President Larry Bandy Vale Larry Bandy
Fingers Crossed
The entire bowls community was saddened by the loss of our President Larry Bandy. Larry brought passion and purpose to the role and was the driver behind the projects currently nearing completion.
Cody Packer and Kristina Krstic have done everything possible in their quest for Commonwealth Games selection. Their dedication and sacrifices have not gone un-noticed and we wish them well.
The next Chapter
Pennants
My transition into the President’s role, of which I complete the remainder of Larry’s term, has been made easier by having a supportive and hardworking board. CEO Ken and all the staff have also been patient and supportive as I embrace the challenge and privilege of being President.
Governance Review Our governance review has seen a catch up in our constitution to reflect where we are at in today’s world. These changes will be put to members for approval at our next AGM. Our next Strategic Plan is also being developed under the guidance of Mike McLaughlin Consultancy. This will set out a clear list of objectives for the next four years and will have input from the wider bowls community. This project is 50% funded by BA.
Live Streaming The Board's decision to invest in better quality and more reliable live streaming, has, I think been a good one with positive feedback and many views.
How lucky we have been to complete our Pennant season in both metropolitan and country regions. The combined of Men’s White and PL midweek seems to have been accepted and will continue again next season.
Country Country week is an iconic event in BWA calendar, and we got through all bar the Allstars, Metro v Country ladies and President’s 16 games, disappointing, but acceptable as far as the bigger picture goes. Live streaming in these Covid times took the game to the country which was greatly appreciated.
Farewell to Kaitlin and Ross Kaitlin Tyrell has been a hard working and respected part of our team since 2018 and it will be sad to see her go. Ross Warburton has decided not to stand for re-election on the board. Ross started his position on the board in2016 then took on the Country Directors position in the same year. Ross’ knowledge and commitment has been outstanding. He drove change as needed and has left a positive impact on the structure of country bowls. I personally will miss Ross as a sounding board and his enthusiasm for his role. Thanks Ross.

Clubs will need to adapt to changes I am not sure we can say we sprinted over the line, more like limped, but that was good enough to complete our season without significant disruption. Clearly there were individual and some club issues with COVID but generally we collectively saw off the worst of the period post-Christmas, adhering to the required protocols as determined by the authorities. It was great to see events that had in the past been cancelled such as Men’s and Ladies Country Week(s) completed albeit having to forfeit out of care the annual representative matches. Similarly, our country and metro pennants season’s are over, with promotions, demotions and pennant winners determined – a great outcome over all. Many are suggesting a tough winter season, so maintain the hygiene rules we have set ourselves over the past six months and come October/November be ready to go again.
Constitutional changes sought The recommendation to review our Bowls WA Constitution has been discussed in Jack Hi and various Forums previously. We are now at a stage where those recommendations, as suggested by Consultancy PDP, may be shared with our affiliated clubs. In general, the changes recommended are not significant, with many simply updating past practices that are no longer relevant and others covering off areas of good governance as required by authorities, in particular Sport Australia and the State Government. Some changes even have future funding ramifications, so the acceptance of such change will benefit all within the sport.
BowlsWA • Jack Hi • Summer 2022
Shortly these changes will be forwarded with the Regional Bowls Manager’s available to discuss as part of their club visits. With acceptance required from 75% of the affiliated clubs who vote, we hope to have that support in the lead up to the July Annual General Meeting.
Strategic Planning process underway Many thanks for the almost 1100 responses received from members for the Strategic Planning e-survey distributed by McLaughlin Sports Consultancy. The responses will form the basis of further discussion around the 2022-2025 Bowls WA Strategic Plan, which will likely continue to have a strong focus on on-going club development and the sustainability of our clubs into the future. The Plan which is due for completion at the end of May will go through several collaborative processes with Board Directors, Staff, Club Executives and various other stakeholders before presentation at the July AGM. In addition, the Board has agreed to fund a specific Club Developmen Plan, which will focus on the continued develpment of our clubs into much more self sustainable community hubs.

Striving for Personal Achievement from Grass Root Inclusion Programs to National Events…
2022 All Abilities State Championships The 2022 All Abilities State Championships wrapped up last weekend with 42 participants in four categories of Deaf, Intellectual and Physical Disability, and Vision Impairment. With new players in every category, and an increase in women players, it was a treat to see the quality of bowls being played as participants fought for titles in Singles and Pairs. A new development this year saw the Singles event enhanced from Winner and Runner Up to also include Equal Thirds. Another massive change was the inclusion of prize money for our All Abilities winners – a welcome change! Thank you to Doug Kelly, Bowls WA Board President, for visiting the event opening ceremony on Saturday morning, this was appreciated! Bowls WA thanks all players for their determination and stamina, playing up to five games a day! We would like to also extend a special thank you to: 1. Auslan Interpreter Tara Ulrich who volunteers her time at our Opening and Closing Ceremonies to provide Auslan to our Deaf Bowlers.
And of course, a tremendous Thank You to Kardinya Bowling Club for again hosting this fantastic event and the super volunteers ranging from Tournament Director Steve Flynn, the Markers, those who helped filling in Score Cards and Scoreboards, Bowls Kickers, Wheelchair Pushers, Kitchen Helpers, Helen at the Bar, and the Greens Committee! Without Clubs who support Inclusive Initiatives we would not be able to provide a competitive environment for Inclusive HighPerformance Pathways! • The winners of the 2022 All Abilities State Championships are as follows:
2. Stephen Pratt MLC, member for the South Metropolitan Region who presented medals and acquainted himself with the players and the event. 3. Lorraine and Rex Nicholson (Warnbro BC), William Tan (Mosman Park BC), and Anne Crabb (Manning BC) for Officiating this event. A Facebook photo album can be viewed by clicking on the following link: https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.7244290655642017&type=3

From the Umpires
Peter BARNETT
Myths and legends of Bowls With the Metro Pennants and many of the Country League Pennants finishing their seasons it is time to reflect on the questions raised by you the bowlers with the umpires committee. Some subjects just keep coming up again and again becoming urban myths and legends. Like most urban myths there is an element of truth to them but in the wrong context or missing a context. Some of the Common ones are:
Stopping a bowl from the next rink It is easy to see why this law confuses people and that is because it is, in fact, two laws and one of those laws has two options. So, let’s start with the simple one. In a singles game a Marker must stop a bowl from a neighbouring rink that could disturb the head (law 42.2.10). Now for the more complicated law [37.6]. It starts with a bowl on your rink being, 'in danger of being moved by a bowl from a neighbouring rink, any player at the head must choose'. To lift the bowl on your rink OR stop the incoming bowl. Just think what happens if one player chooses to lift when another chooses to stop. To make it more complicated the person choosing to lift also has to make a judgement about the lifted bowl. Is it likely to be in the count [Law 37.6.1.1] ? With choices and judgements to be made, some bowlers and coaches of new bowlers prefer to keep it simple and say that in all situations the Bowl must be stopped, hence creating the myth that the only option is to stop the bowl.
Acceptable shoes/Footwear Not to be confused the national logo policy of Bowls Australia the Law Book appendix A.2 say, 'Players, umpires and markers must wear flat-soled (heel-less) footwear when they play on the green or act as umpires or markers.' I think we can agree that it is a fairly wide criterion. It also says, 'World Bowls and Member National Authorities can approve specific colours for footwear and the types of sole.' Bowls Australia have on their website quite an extensive list of makes and models that meet the criterion. If your shoes/ thongs/sandals are on this list then you clearly comply. However, some of us need specialist footwear to look after our health.
8
If your needs take you outside the BA approved list, then a competent bootmaker can modify your choice of footwear to be flat soled. Beware that the policy says footwear is a 'must' and does not include bare foot as an option. So while bare foot is OK for social events, all official events like club championship or Bowls WA events require complying footwear. Similarly in the interests of your own safety/health moon boots should not be modified. Adding a flat sole will increase the risk of you slipping over and doing more damage to yourself.
Measuring to a jack in the ditch The myth is that when measuring between a bowl on the green to a jack in the ditch, you must measure from the bowl to the jack. Some even go further to include measuring between a toucher in the ditch and the jack in the ditch it must be from the bowl to the jack. While there are no rules telling Bowlers what equipment to use or how to use it Law 54 lists the minimum Measuring Equipment that should be available to Umpires. How to use the equipment is taught in the training courses and manuals for umpires. They advise: • To measure into the ditch a string measure should be used and the preferred string measure is a 'Peg String' measure. Not often seen in WA but the best for measuring over the edge of a ditch and finding the closest part of the bowl. • The fixed end of the peg string is held at the jack by an assistant and the adjustable end at the bowl by the decision maker. • If a peg string is not available then the next best thing is to use the right angle tape that has a flexible extension. In this case it is best to measure from the bowl to the jack • If what is being measured is between a jack on the green to a bowl in the ditch then the very common'Box string' measure from the jack to the bowl is best. Note: 'Box Tape' measures are not as good because they do not take the shortest line over the edge of the ditch. – continued on page 9

From the Umpires
Peter BARNETT
Myths and legends of Bowls – From page 8
Possession of the Rink/Time wasting We as the BWA Umpires committee often get asked about rules to counter slow play. There are no slow play rules unless one is added to the Conditions of Play. As much as it may be annoying to some bowlers, a team in possession of the rink may take as much time as they like to discuss what shot to play or consult a coach etc. However, the team not in possession of the rink must not 'interfere with', 'distract' or 'annoy' the other team. [Law 13] Stopping to talk when changing ends only needs to 'annoy' the team in possession to be a breach of this law. And the penalty if you read Law 13 will surprise you. To make for an enjoyable game it is best to raise this type of breach of the Law with the opposition before calling an umpire, as most times they are just caught up in the moment and do not realise they are causing annoyance. While the team on possession of the rink may take as much time as they need, they must not leave the green unless their opponent agrees and then only for no more than 10 minutes. Out of courtesy no reasonable request should be refused but you may suggest to the heavy smoker, too many breaks are not reasonable. Note: Umpires or measurers doing a measure may be leaving a rink but are not leaving the green.
2/2/2/2 is the preferred format for pairs As they say 'Beauty is in the eye of the Beholder' and with many different ways to play pairs it is viewed differently by different people. You have a choice of: • Two Bowl pairs • Three Bowl pairs • Four bowl pairs played as 2/2/2/2 • Four bowl pairs played as 2/4/2 • Sets Play for each of the above. [Law 56] • Different numbers of ends for each of the above • A time limited game for each of the above. [Laws 26.2 and 55.3.2]. The Controlling Body, be it Bowls WA or your club can choose which one of these it prefers.
BowlsWA • Jack Hi • Summer 2022
An International green length The 'Laws of the Sport of Bowls' has some specific laws related to international competition. The dimensions of the Green is NOT one of them. So, any green between 31 metres and 40 metres can be used for domestic or international play. [Law 46.2]
Opponents in Singles can agree to play to a short jack Generally, in a Singles game the Marker’s duties are to assist by answering questions etc for whichever player has possession of the rink (see Law 42), but one of the duties is “The marker must make sure the jack is 21 metres from the mat line:…” That is a must for the markers so please do not be surprised if your tactics in a singles game is to play short ends, that the marker calls the umpire to check the distance of the rolled jack.
Skips, Leads and Seconds must remain silent while thirds decide That annoying second who tells the third that they have missed a bowl when agreeing the number of shots, are they out of order? The answer is no they are not. Nothing in the Laws prevents teammates talking to each other about the game. However, the person adding their 'two bobs worth' needs to do so before deciding the number of shots scored is finished. That is the second, the lead and the skip can offer their advice to the third at any time from the start of measuring until the score has been conveyed to the Skip.
If unsure, just ask If you have any questions about the Laws or etiquette or Umpires equipment, just ask one of your club’s National Umpires. If still uncertain feel free to ask the Umpires Committee who are committed to 'Responding to all communications in a professional and timely manner'. The committee can be contacted through Bowls WA and one of our International Technical Officials (ITOs) will get back to you. In addition, for the really difficult ones we are fortunate to have on the committee Sue Hogg who is involved in developing the content of the next revision of the Law Book.

All leagues complete pennants season With two years of Covid 19 disrupting many people’s lives, the 2021/2022 bowling season has been completed with only minor disruptions. This year all Leagues were able to complete their pennant competitions and congratulations go to all Pennant winners. The Men’s and Ladies IZRR’s were completed this year at Busselton and Denison respectively with the Eastern Zone winning both Competitions. It was disappointing that the Men’s All Stars verses the State Squad and the Ladies Country verses Metro had to be cancelled due to Covid. Congratulations to the players who were picked in these teams. Both Men’s and Ladies Country Weeks were completed this year with only a few players withdrawing because of Covid. Thanks to all the Metropolitan Clubs who offered their venues and supplied volunteers and thanks to Bowls WA Staff who offered their services. Congratulations to Mathew France from Merredin on winning the Men’s Singles, Michael Ford and Shane Giudice-Nairn from Geraldton on winning the Pairs, and Matthew Mitchell, Jon Sharp, Doug Wright and Stephen Tuffley from Emu Point on winning the Fours. Congratulations to the winners of the Men’s Bignell Perpetual Memorial Shield for the Champion Club which was a three way tie this year between Merredin, Geraldton and Emu Point. The Ladies Bowls WA Shield for the Champion Club was also a three way tie and congratulations go to Brunswick, Dudley Park and Gingin on winning the Shield. The Over 60’s State Mixed Pairs was held in early April and I would like to congratulate two country bowlers from Binningup, Fred and Judy Flanagan, for winning this title. All Clubs will receive notifications of changes to the Bowls WA Constitution which will be voted on at the Annual AGM to be held on the 30th July at the Thornlie Bowling Club. Most of the changes involve regulatory requirements and considered simple enough for clubs to understand. The Constitutional Notices will be distributed to clubs by the 15th June. We ask Executives of Clubs to read the changes carefully and if any clarification is required contact the Bowls WA office. I would like to thank the 1,070 bowlers who responded to the e-survey online with suggestions relating to the strategic plan. Mike McLaughlin who has been employed by Bowls Australia, and very experienced in drawing up Strategic Plans, will also be helping Bowls WA to draw up their plan. I look forward to catching up with country bowlers at this year’s Awards Night which will be held on the 3rd June at the Royal Perth Golf Club.

Mixed O60s Pairs
Big win for Fred and Judy Flanagan
• Fred and Judy Flanagan win O60s Mixed Pairs 2021-2022.
Binningup’s Fred and Judy Flanagan have come through the large Over 60’s Mixed Pairs field to be the 2021-22 Champions at the Manning Bowling Club. Up against Geoff and Sue Hinge (Warwick), the Flanagan’s started slowly and found themselves down 2-7 after six ends. A run of three straight ends put them in front for the first time but it was to be short lived as Geoff Hinge hit back with a three to retake the lead. Again, Fred Flanagan put consecutive ends on the board by taking the next four ends to lead 13-10 and looking the likely winner. However, Geoff Hinge was not done with yet and drew within a single shot with only two ends to play. A single on the second last end and a final two on the last end put paid to the Hinge push as Fred and Judy Flanagan ran out 16-12 winners in the Over 60’s Mixed Pairs. This is believed to be the first ever major title won by a Binningup team in the club’s short history having been affiliated in 1994. Full results of the SRC WA Mixed Over 60s Pairs here

Women’s Pennants Wrap Tuesday Pennants Another great season of the Professional’s Women’s Tuesday Pennants came to a close when six clubs received a pennant flag during a bumper finals day of action across two venues at Bassendean Bowling Club and Manning Memorial Bowling Club on Wednesday March 16th 2022.
Premier Division This season came down to the wire with 2nd-5th spot up for grabs throughout the entire season. Manning sat comfortably on top whilst, Mosman Park, North Beach, Osborne Park and Melville all fought it out for the remaining spots. Manning won the semi-final 67-56 against Mosman Park to secure their spot in the Grand Final. Whilst in the first Semi-final North Beach downed Osborne Park 64-55 to take on Mosman Park in the Preliminary final. Mosman Park proved to good for North Beach with a dominant 3 rink win 71-44, making it a Manning v Mosman Park final once again. With a seven-title winning streak under their belt Manning looked to make it 8 against old rivals Mosman Park. After a strong start by Mosman Park, the experience of Manning began to show with the rinks of Matthews and Hastings fighting back to win whilst the rink of Krstic kept it tight against a dangerous Warburton who stepped up to skip after Poletti was a late out. Winning 71-50 this makes it 13 titles out of the last 15 for Manning.
• Manning – Premier Division Pennant winners.
1st Division Green – North The finals of the 1st Division Green North was a close contest with the both Semi-finals won by just two shots. Warwick 1 defeated North Beach 2 55-53 and Sorrento defeated North Beach 1 6967. The Preliminary final was a different story with North Beach 2 defeating Sorrento comfortably, 75-41, mainly due to the rink of Wendy Robertson with a dominating 31-10 win. Warwick 1 proved too good for North Beach 2, winning 61-49 to win the 1st Division Green North Pennant for the third time in recent history. As well as the Pennant, Warwick has earnt a place in 1st Division White next season after finishing on top of the ladder for the season.
1st Division White The battle for the guaranteed Grand Final spot between top of the tables Leeming 1 and Mundaring was a close contest with no more than 3 shots deciding the winner. In the end Leeming 1 was victorious 55-52 leaving Mundaring to face a Manning side coming off a three rink dominant performance against North Beach 75-51. The Preliminary final was another nail biter between Mundaring and Manning coming down to another three point aggregate difference. Despite 2 rink wins with a four shot difference from Manning the rink of Shirley Ellis did enough to hold on to the aggregate with a seven shot win, to make it 6259 and take them into the Grand Final to face Leeming 1 once again. Leeming 1 showed why they finished on top defeating Mundaring 67-55 to win the Pennant. Leeming and Mundaring both earned promotion finishing top of the table and will once again join Premier Division next season.

• Leeming – 1st Division White winners.
1st Division Green – South Warnbro went into these finals looking to cement their own slice of history and make it back-to-back Pennant titles and were set to face off against top of the table Rossmoyne. Despite finishing top of the tables Warnbro proved too good for Rossmoyne defeating them 64-50 to book a place in the Grand Final once again. The Semi-final between Byford and Cockburn was anyone’s game with both teams finishing the season with 61 points each. The result showed how close these two are with Cockburn winning by just 3 points to face Rossmoyne in the Preliminary final.
BowlsWA • Jack Hi • Autumn 2022
Women’s Pennants 1st Division Green – South – continued The Preliminary final showed what finals are all about with Cockburn winners against Rossmoyne by just 1 point, 60-59, to book their place in the Grand Final against Warnbro. Despite Cockburn picking up 2 rink wins, the rink of Elaine Meehan carried Warnbro over the lie with a 22-8 win to secure the Pennant, 52-46 for Warnbro and make it back-to-back Pennant titles. Rossmoyne will now join their 1st Division Green North counterparts in 1st Division White next season.

2nd Division Mt Lawley, Scarborough and Forrestfield and Districts all cemented their spots comfortable in the top ladder positions with Leeming only just securing their position by just half a point over Gosnells 1. Scarborough had the home ground advantage against Leeming coming out victors 65-56, whilst Forrestfield and Districts came up winners against Mt Lawley 6658. In the end Scarborough proved too good for the Forrestfield annd Districts side with a 28-13 rink win helping secure the Pennant 64-48. This is Scarborough’s first Pennant title since 2013 and they will look to make a splash in 1st Division Green along with Mt Lawley, Forrestfield and Districts and Leeming.
3rd Division The introduction of Open Gender was a welcome change to many clubs that in the past found it difficult to field full sides of women. Kwinana, South Perth, Forrestfield and Districts and Perth and Tattersalls all booked their places in the 3rd Division Pennant Finals. Perth and Tattersalls took the Semi-Final win 56-40 against Kwinana with a 28-7 rink win helping carry them over the line. South Perth vs Forrestfield and Districts was a 1 point thriller, despite Forrestfield and Districts taking a 35-14 shot rink win, South Perth managed to hold on and earn a spot in the Grand Final. The Final between South Perth and Perth and Tattersalls was anyone’s game with each side winning one rink each by just 1 shot, the rink of Peita Alberti secured the win with a 22-10 shot win to make it a South Perth victory 58-46.
• 1st Division Green South Pennant winners.
South Perth are quickly making a name for themselves and rising up the ranks adding this title to their 4th Division Pennant title last year and earning promotion to 2nd Division with Kwinana, Gosnells 1, Safety Bay 3, Merriwa AFA 1, Bayswater, Forrestfield and Districts and Perth and Tattersalls also following suit.
4th Division With only two colours of 4th Division, the Pennant Finals are as cut-throat as they come. With the top of the ladders for each colour, Bull Creek AFA and Joondalup, facing off for the Pennant in the Grand Final and only two rinks, its do or die for each side. Bull Creek AFA came into the Grand Final red-hot favourites with 11 Wins, 1 Loss and 2 Draws compared to Joondalup’s 6 Wins, 3 Losses and 3 Draws as well as 2 Bye rounds. In the end a 24-11 rink win for Bull Creek AFA pulled them over the line for Pennant glory for their first titlei n history. Bull Creek AFA and Joondalup will be joined by Kwinana and Nollamara in 3rd Division next season.
Well done and congratulations to all Women’s Tuesday Pennant players on a fantastic season and we look forward to seeing what the next season will bring!

Metro Pennant Wrap
Close finish in Premier League Another great season of The Professional’s Men’s Saturday Pennants came to a close with two days of bumper finals day action across multiple venues on Saturday the 2nd April and Sunday the 3rd April. Congratulations to all those that made it to finals and to the winners of the Pennant.
Premier League The Professionals Men’s Premier League came to its ultimate conclusion on a warm and humid day at Yokine Bowling Club, Sunday 3rd April. The season had been a very interesting one with Doubleview, Cambridge and South Perth all sitting at the top of the ladder through out the year but ultimately it would be Manning who would steal the show in the finals defeating all three to claim their third title in the last eight seasons. Doubleview Bowling Club hosted the opening finals rounds on the Saturday after defeating Cambridge in the last home and away round, and they would have been bitterly disappointed to end the season with consecutive defeats to South Perth and Manning on their home track. South Perth accounted for them in the morning match comfortably 89-67 whilst at the same time Manning eked out a narrow 6 shot win over Cambridge. With the winner to face South Perth in the grand final Manning proved too good for Doubleview 86-62 to go into the grand final with plenty of confidence. South Perth who had tasted defeat in grand finals on a number of occasions would have been hoping this was going to be the day they would break through for another flag having last won the title in 1970/71 however right from the start it was Manning who played the better bowls on the day. The rink of Trewhella, Butler, Ker and O’Brien burst out the blocks scoring multiples on several ends to quickly lead the Pauling rink by double digits and with the other Manning teams all playing strongly Manning had built a 38 shot lead approaching the half way mark of the contest. To the credit of South Perth they then lifted, the rink of Brown, Such, Antonio and Galipo who had earlier dropped a 6 to the Knott team of Jones, Ellis and Angel was able to score a big end of 7 and then followed up with a 5 a few ends later to help narrow the margin. Pauling was able to close the margin on Trewhella and Opie picked up some shots against a very steady Tom Mitchell skipped side along with Ross Bresland’s rink grabbing a much needed count of 4 for them through out the next hour of play saw the margin narrow right down to just 12 shots with around 15 ends to play.

• Manning – Premier League Pennant winners.
The most unlikely comeback looked a possibility but the Mitchell rink of Grigg, Hogg and Kemp closed out there win over Opie, Kinnane, Manton and Griffin by 8 shots and Daniel Trewhella drew shot on the last end of his match it was the final nail on the coffin leaving the superbly led Will Hyatt rink with the dynamic play of David Downey along with Alan Heal and Mitchell Walker to close out the match with a 7 shot win over the Bresland rink. Manning were duly presented with the Professionals Men’s Premier League flag and shield with former international cricketer Brad Hogg in just his third season of bowls taking the microphone on behalf of the club. Whether it was real or the thrill of the moment Hogg claimed the pressure and the atmosphere of the final was as intense as any sporting moment he had been in, which is amazing consider he won a World Cup with the Australian cricket team.
1st Division White Gosnells are The Professionals 1st White champions for 2021-22 as they claimed the title over Mt Lawley by 12 shots. Amazingly had they bounced back from a 30 shot defeat to the same team the previous day. Mt Lawley had been the best team all season finishing the year clear on top of the ladder however the Gosnells players showed they were up for the challenge as they played great bowls in the grand final to claim the title. – continued page 15…

Men’s Pennant Wrap 1st Division White – From page 14… The Gosnells rink of Nicol, Harris, Anderson and Deas had a brilliant last two matches of the year with a 35-9 preliminary final effort getting them to the grand final were they backed it up with the 25-11 win against Mt Lawley in the final. Mt Lawley whilst perhaps disappointed with their grand final effort will however but absolutely thrilled to have secured a return to the top grade of Premier League. Whilst officials records are hard to find it is believed 202223 will be the first time they have done so since the last 1960s. Gosnells return to Premier League for the first time since 2005-06.
1st Division Blue The 1st Division Blue grand final is always an interesting one as it pits the best teams from North and South against each other. Joondalup showed they are a club on the rise having first entered a team in 5th division in 1996 have reached their highest point yet claiming the 1st Division Blue flag and move into 1st White next season. A mixture of good recruiting and home grown talent got the job done for them against a very gallant Kalamunda side in the final 98-63. Joondalup boost 5 father and son pairings through all divisions which include two skippers in Wayne and Wes Neilson in their top side. Wes Neilson’s rink ultra impressive defeating Bill Brandsma 25-11 whilst Wayne Neilson’s rink who jumped out the blocks to lead 13-0 head on for a 19-18 victory. Ben Leggett was another big winner 30-13 whilst his father was playing third for Shane Rixom who provided a clean sweep for Joondalup winning 24-21. Both these teams will progress to 1st White next year. Warnbro and Quinns Rocks will also remain in 1st White surviving their challenge playoffs against the 1st Blue teams of Swan and South Perth.
2nd Division The final four for 2nd Division were Safety Bay 1, Victoria Park Carlisle, Forrestfield and Districts, and Cambridge, with each club looking to win the 2nd Division for the first time in a number of years. The Semi Finals saw Victoria Park Carlisle play Safety Bay 1, and Cambridge face Forrestfield and Districts. Cambridge were victors against Forrestfield & Districts with a 12 shot win, only losing one rink by just 1 shot. The Semi Final between Victoria Park Carlisle and Safety Bay 1, was an absolute nail bitter, with Victoria Park Carlisle securing the aggregate keeping it tight and winning just one rink by 15 shots to drag them over the line to win by just 2 shots. With the Final set as Victoria Park Carlisle vs Cambridge it was anyone’s Pennant to win. With three rink wins under their belt, Victoria Park Carlisle claimed the 2nd Division Pennant Flag for the first time since 2006.

• Joondalup – 1st Division Blue Pennant winners.
Safety Bay 1, Victoria Park Carlisle, Cambridge, and Forrestfield and Districts will look to make their mark when they join 1st Division next year. Fremantle, Hilton Park and Doubleview all retain their spots in 2nd Division with North Perth providing the upset and winning their challenge finals to join 1st Division next year, whilst Morley come down to 2nd Division.
3rd Division The final four were determined with each team leading their respective ladders comfortably, the teams of Perth & Tattersalls, Rockingham, Midland Morrison and Joondalup 2. The Semi Final line up saw Rockingham take on Perth & Tattersalls, and Joondalup 2 face off against Midland Morrison, all taking place at Joondalup Bowling Club. Both games were won comfortably, with Perth & Tattersalls defeating Rockingham by 26 shots, and Joondalup 2 overcoming Midland Morrison by 14 shots. The Final was a closely fought contest with one rink ending in a draw, but in the end Joondalup 2 continued the clubs winning ways winning by 12 shots against Perth & Tattersalls another club on the rise in recent times. As well as participating in the Pennant Final, Perth & Tattersalls, Rockingham, Midland Morrison and Joondalup 2 have earnt the right to join 2nd Division next season, bringing an injection of new blood into the division. Another four teams will also move up a grade after the promotion finals. Manning played off against Kalamunda to see who else could join the ladder toppers into 2nd Division. In the end Manning earned the right with just a 5 shot win with two rinks decided by just 1 shot each. Hilton Park and Rossmoyne faced off for a spot in 2nd Division with Hilton Park claiming glory by 14 shots with a 10 shot rink win helping push them over the line. Glen Forrest and Lake Monger battled it out to earn promotion and saw Lake Monger winners by just 4 shots, despite Lake Monger having a 37-10 rink win, Glen Forrest put up a valiant effort to fight back and gave it everything they had. Merriwa AFA and Sorrento were the final sides to contest for a 2nd Division spot. Merriwa AFA put out an absolutely dominating performance against Sorrento defeating them 10159, with each Merriwa AFA rink scoring over 20 shots each. – continued page 22…

ANZAC Day Bowls
Kiwis vs Aussies at Kwinana
• The winning 'Aussies' team.
The Kwinana Bowling Club held an inaugural Kiwi’s V Aussie’s Anzac Day bowls match on Monday April 25. A minute silence was observed on the green then the National Anthems of both counties was played before the match began. Several Kwinana bowlers are also members of the Kwinana RSL. 48 bowlers (six rinks) turned out in fine spirit to compete for the honour to be the first winner of the ‘Kwinana Bowls Club Anzac Match Shield.’ The 48 bowlers comprised of – 16 Kiwi’s, 16 Aussie’s and sixteen rest of the world nationalities which were split into Kiwi or Aussie teams. Early in the game the Aussies were fighting an uphill battle as the Kiwis got off to a flying start, but in true Aussie spirit they fought back and the scores tightened. Sheer determination and grit saw the Aussies win the match comfortably in the end 122-92. Better luck next year Kiwi. The match was played in very good spirit and humour with the jibes and slanging by both sides taken in jest. The Kiwi’s organised this first encounter and provided a delicious and plentiful Hangi to be shared with friends following the match, which was enjoyed by all. The Aussies will be the organisers for next year’s Anzac Day match and will provide a meal of authentic Aussie fare. (Vegemite on Toast – perhaps). Great day had by all and it is hoped that this becomes an annual ANZAC Day tradition on the Kwinana bowls calendar.

Anzac Day brings unique pairing Every Anzac Day Harvey and Brunswick Bowls Clubs compete in the Harvey Brunswick Challenge with perpetual trophies to be won in Ladies and Mens events. It's very popular, with 64 players in total competing. Although bragging rights are being played for, it's very much a social afternoon followed by dinner, with the venue rotating annually. This year it was held at Brunswick. By chance, both the youngest and the oldest player in the South West League were pitted against one another, both leading for their respective fours teams. Dante Burnham, 11yo is pictured alongside Mike Reeve, 93. Notice the size difference as well as the incredible 82 year gap in 'experience'! Dante recently competed in the State U18's. Mike is the patron for, and Life Member of, the Brunswick Club. Each enjoyed the other's company. All bowlers from Harvey and Brunswick recognised the uniqueness of the pairing. On the green, both were determined to outplay the other. Honours were shared though, with the result a drawn game. BowlsWA • Jack Hi • Autumn 2022

Last bowl thriller for Slavich trio in mens John Slavich (Doubleview) Justin Opie (South Perth) and Lee Such (South Perth) took out the Men’s State Triples in wet conditions at the Osborne Park Bowling Club with a 16-14 win over Blake Nairn, Clive Adams and Eric Johannes (Cambridge) in the final. The Nairn combination started strongly with a three on the second end to lead 4-0 and then went on to win six of the first eight ends to lead 11-5. A single on the ninth end and then a triple to Slavich was the start of comeback and a grandstand finish. A two to Nairn again stretched the lead to four before Slavich won four consecutive ends to grab the lead for the first time in the game with two ends to play. With all players playing great bowls despite the conditions the last end was set up with Slavich leading by one shot and having the last bowl due to dropping a single shot on the second last end. With game down and only one bowl left in the game, Slavich stepped up to draw the shot as he has done many times in the past and secure the 2021-22 State Triples Championship.
• Men's Triple winners – Lee Such, Justin Opie and John Slavich.

Blackwell team hold on in Women s The Women’s State Triples Final saw Lisa Featherby (Mosman Park), Laura Merz (Manning) and Linda Warburton (Mosman Park) going for two in a row against Kaye Blackwell (Melville), Rhonda Prosser (North Beach) and Kerry Andersen (Mosman Park) Under wet and heavy conditions at Osborne Park Bowling Club, Featherby started well winning the first two ends, but Blackwell quickly got into gear winning four consecutive ends and leading 9-3. The middle part of the game saw both teams picking up singles and at 13-7 with only four ends to play it looked like a comfortable Blackwell win. Featherby grabbed the mat with a single on the fourteenth end and made the decision to go to full length ends on the slow green. With the Blackwell team losing their weight, Featherby grabbed consecutive two’s to go into the last end only two behind and an unlikely win possible. Both teams went bowl for bowl but when the dust settled, the Featherby combination could only claim a single shot, allowing Blackwell to claim the 2021-22 State Triples title with a 1312 scoreline.

Another title for Featherby The Women’s 100up was completed at the Warnbro Bowling Club with Lisa Featherby (Mosman Park) overcoming Jenni McLaughlin (North Beach) to take the championship. McLaughlin started strongly in a high-quality final to have her nose in front at the halfway mark of the final with a 52-48 score line. It was then that Featherby stepped up another gear with outstanding draw bowling and playing the ultimate consistency game. Featherby went from a 73-67 lead to a 91-69 quickly to put the game out of McLaughlin’s reach. Only three on the next end made Featherby wait a little longer but she finished it off soon after to take the 2021-22 Championship with a 100-79 win. Full Results of the Women’s 100up Singles

4th Division – Pennant Final
5th Division
The teams that finished top of the ladder in each 4th Division colour had dominating seasons with no one team losing more than 4 games, with 2 sides losing only 1 game all season. Safety Bay 1, Victoria Park Carlise, Yokine 1 and Yokine 2. Unfortunately for Yokine, the ranking system lead to a Yokine 1 v Yokine 2 Semi Final. This Semi Final saw Yokine 2 earn the Grand Final spot against their fellow club members. Safety Bay 1 and Victoria Park Carlise faced off with Safety Bay 1 the winners to face Yokine 2 in the Grand Final. Despite a rink win 32-14 to Yokine 2, Safety Bay 1 won with two rink wins, 26-9 and 26-18 helping them over the line to claim the 4th Division Pennant Flag, their first 4th Division Flag in many years. These four sides, Safety Bay 1, Victoria Park Carlise, Yokine 1 and Yokine 2, will now join 3rd Division next year along with the winners of the 4th Division Promotional Finals. In promotion finals another four teams will join them into 3rd division next season. South Perth and Mt Pleasant faced off to earn Promotion and it was a tight contest that came down to the wire. Mt Pleasant, Doubleview, Kwinana, North Perth and DalkeithNedlands all finished 1st on their respective ladders. In ranking Dalkeith-Nedlands and North Perth were ranked 4th and 5th respectively. North Perth dominated the game with two North Perth rinks scoring over 30 shots, and winning 8535, earning a spot in the Semi Finals. The first Semi Final was Doubleview 1 v Kwinana 1 and resulted in Kwinana 1 winners aided by a 39-7 rink win. Continuing their form into the Semi Finals, North Perth were winners against Mt Pleasant 1, 57-50. Proving to be in hot form, North Perth became the 5th Division Pennant winners against Kwinana 1, after having to take the harder path toward the final, having to play one more game than their opponents. Mt Pleasant, Doubleview, Kwinana, North Perth and Dalkeith-Nedlands will join 4th Division next season. The Henselite Women’s Champion of Champion Novice Singles finals series at the Morley Bowling Club was a tight affair. In the first semi-final Ann Lloyd (Cockburn) overcame Kayla McKenna (Armadale) 21-19 while in the second semi-final saw Faye Capewell (Safety Bay) beat Natalie Andersen (Geraldton) with the same 21-19 score line. The final continued along the same lines as both ladies went bowl for bowl with Ann Lloyd coming out on top over Faye Capewell in a close 21-19 affair to take the 2021-22 Women’s Novice Championship.
The class of Cody Packer combined with the emerging talent of Jack East in the final of $7,000 Hart and Co Men’s Masters Pairs at Doubleview Bowling Club for a simply superb win in the final. The Osborne Park pairing never gave their rivals a chance winning the final 22-5. Runners-up Will Hyatt (Manning) and Kristian Carr (Goomalling) can hold their heads high despite the margin in the final after what was an excellent tournament for them defeating many quality sides along the way such as Matt Mitchell and Peter Kerr, Daniel Trewhella and Shane Loftus, Shane Knott and Warren Holt and Kyle McIlroy and Dave Rankin in the semi-final 17-15. The other semi-finalist was previous winners John Slavich and Justin Opie who also succumbed to the Packer/East combo. Click here for full results of the Men's Masters Pairs

Under 18’s Championships
Callum too strong in under 18s final A small but enthusiastic and dedicated group of Under 18 bowlers took to the Cockburn Greens for the State Under 18 Singles and Pairs Competitions. After sectional play in the singles competition, the final four came together to entertain the crowd. Segan Pasalich (Osborne Park) defeated Cameron Wellington (Harvey) 21-12 in one semi-final, while Callum Alberti (South Perth) overcame game down against Tom Brooks (Dandaragan) to win 21-20. The final was set up perfectly with Pasalich the defending champion and Alberti confident he could upset the champ. Alberti got into a good grove early and piled on the pressure and while Pasalich showed glimpses of his best form, it was not enough to overcome the consistency of Alberti. Callum Alberti went on to claim his first Under 18 Singles title with a 21-14 victory.

Hastings claims another title Therese Hastings Hall of Famer Therese Hastings added to her vast array of titles with another strong performance claiming the Over 60’s State Singles for the first time at Osborne Park Bowling Club on Friday 25th February. In a strong field it was Hastings v Renate Coote (Mosman Park) and Elaine Meehan (Warnbro) v Kerry Andersen (Mosman Park) in the semi finals with Hastings prevailing 21-12 and Andersen winning 21-11 to set up what promised to be a great final. The final lived up to the billing in what turned out to be an epic 27 end battle in which the lead changed hands nine times through out the match. Andersen was ever reliant on her strong draw game and had a purple patch to pick up six shots across three ends to lead 11-7 before Hastings hit a patch of her own. She fought back well winning the next four ends to level the match and slowly was getting on top. Andersen then had another good period where went from 14-17 down to 19-17 up including a great end scoring a much needed three. This was when Hastings then found those champion qualities and played some superb shots winning the last ends to secure victory 21-19.
• Women's winner – Therese Hastings.
Eagles soars to State Singles title Bruce Eagles Bruce Eagles made it back to back wins for Sorrento in the Men’s Over 60’s Singles taking the title from past winner Tony Krajancic (Kardinya) in a great final at the Nollamara Bowling Club on Wednesday 23rd February. The semi finals matches were absolute thrillers. Eagles played last years runner up Peter Cole from Pinjarra and got there by the barest possible margin 21-20 whilst Krajancic gritted out a 21-18 win over surprise packet Derek Angell from South Perth. Krajancic who was looking for his third title in this event having won it back in 2010 and 2011 and now in his seventies began well to pick up singles in the first two ends but after five ends the scores were locked at 3-3. Eagles then made what would be the match winning move stringing together several good ends in which he picked up three scores of three shots whilst Krajancic scored just a single to advance the score to 12-4. Krajancic then knuckled down and applied serious pressure whilst Eagles battled hard to contain the scoring run. Krajancic won eight ends to just Eagles one end but the vast majority of those were only singles shots and the score were once again locked at 13-13. Eagles then hit back with a couple of two’s scored before Krajancic finally found a big multiple grabbing three shots and with the score at 19-16 a grand stand finish looked likely. Eagles however played another great end to close out the match with a well earnt 21-16 win. BowlsWA • Jack Hi • Autumn 2022

Australian Championship Wrap 2022
WA success at the Championships Images courtesy of Bowls Australia
WA was strongly represented at the Australian Championships in an event matches all the state and territory state champions compete against each other for National glory. WA had one of their most successful events overall winning medals in seven of the nine disciplines including gold in the Men’s Fours and Men’s Singles. Here is a quick review of every days play.
Triples – Tuesday 26 April Men's The combination of Tom Mitchell, Warren Holt and Daniel Trewhella faced some tough competition in this event, they went down 11-16 in their opener to Tasmania before wins 14-12 against South Australia and 21-8 over Victoria saw them playing off for the Bronze Medal. They were able to win that with a solid 22-13 victory over the Northern Territory. Gold – Queensland • Silver – Tasmania • Bronze – WA
Women's Linda Warburton, Laura Merz and Lisa Featherby combined to win their section and advance to the Gold Medal play off. Their opening match was a hard fought affair but they prevailed 20-17 over Victoria before recording a massive 41-2 victory over Northern Territory. In the final the WA trio all played well but their Tasmanian opponents skipped by former Jackaroo Rebecca Van Asch proved just a touch too good for them with a 17-12 win. Gold – Tasmania • Silver – WA • Bronze – Victoria • Lisa Featherby in action. • Post games celebrations.
Pairs – Wednesday 27 April Men's The pairing of Greg Taylor and Bruce Eagles were the 2021 Pairs Champions, unfortunately due to personal reasons and the uncertainty of Covid-19 at the beginning of the year when players had to register their participation, Bruce Eagles was not able to compete. Jack East however was able to come in as a substitute in his position. Having never played • Jack East. together before it was always going to be a tough ask but they combined well to win the first match 13-9 against South Australia however the Queensland duo of Ingham and Sherriff proved a bit tough going down 24-6. In the bronze medal playoff Tasmania took it over the WA pair who did acquit themselves well for their first crack at National level – the final score being 18-6. Gold – Queensland • Silver – Victoria • Bronze – Tasmania
Women's Mosman Park's Lisa Featherby and Linda Warburton faced several tough teams in this event, but they did have the advantage of having already competed in the Triples. With just five states represented this was played as a round robin and the WA duo finished with two wins and two losses and ultimately claimed a Bronze medal finishing mid table Gold – Queensland • Silver – Tasmania • Bronze – WA
Mixed Pairs – Wednesday 27 April The last event of the 2021 season saw the Osborne Park duo of Kaitlin Tyrrell and Connor Biddle combine to win their first State Titles. They then faced up against players with a wealth of international experience and talent who were at their best unfortunately. Although soundly beaten both Connor and Kaitlin played extremely well and can be very proud of their efforts. New Zealand international Ali Forsyth skipped his Victorian team to the Gold. Gold – Victoria • Silver – Tasmania • Bronze – Queensland 28

Fours – Thursday 28 April Men's The Men’s Fours event sees the Mt Lawley team of Adam Graham, Paul Sinden, Anthony Enfield, and Mark Masel throw their hats into the ring, coming in as underdogs they pulled off perhaps the most unlikeliest win at the National titles. Great team work and the ability to perform when needed under pressure were the catalyst for them claiming gold. Their sectional wins were a 12-8 victory over Victoria and a 24-12 win over ACT. In the final they trailed most of the match but won the last few ends and skip Mark Masel played the match winner with his last bowl for an amazing 18-15 triumph over Tasmania. Gold – WA • Silver – Tasmania • Bronze – Queensland
Women's The awesome foursome from Manning of Helen Heal, Robyn O’Brien, Hailey Packer, and Kristina Krstic have proved to be a formidable opponent in recent State Fours winning the title twice. They split their matches with two wins and two losses however with the victories being a 19-7 win over Queensland and 18-9 over Northern Territory it gave them enough shots up to secure the Silver medal. Gold – Victoria • Silver – WA • Bronze – Tasmania • Men's Fours winners.
Singles – Friday 29 April Men's Cambridge’s Blake Nairn came into the event as one of WA’s best chances after having a phenomenal season capped off by multiple state titles and strong pennant form. He delivered on the National stage with sectional wins against Garry Smith from South Australia 25-12 and 25-16 against Mark Malagorski from Northern Territory. This left him needing to win or lose but score at least 21 shots to advance to the final. Amazingly that is exactly what he did despite losing 25-21 and he advanced to the final by the barest of margins. Nairn was simply sensational in the final drawing well and when needed converting the head to his advantage against his Tasmania opponent Jacob Brown. After trailing 5-4 after seven ends played, Nairn put his foot to the floor winning 10 of the next 14 ends including a big count of four to move him into an unassailable 23-9 lead, he finally wrapped up the match 25-11. Gold – WA • Silver – Tasmania • Bronze – Queensland
Women's Kristina Krstic was also a strong contender having won multiple titles in the past she has always competed well in the National Championships. With just four competitors the event was played as a round robin with no finals. Kristina started well with a comfortable 25-12 victory over Sarah James from the Northern Territory however up against Kate ArgentBowden she went down in a close one 25-22. This meant she had to record a 25-12 or better victory against Queenslander Bolivia Millerick which was always going to be a very tough ask. Kristina hit her best form of the event after trailing 7-2 she raced to a 17-9 lead and looking like she could do it. Unfortunately, Bolivia played a couple of very good ends to reach her required 13 shots for the Gold medal. Kristina managed to hold on for the win 23-18 after time elapsed before either player could reach 25. Kristina took home her second silver medal for the Championships. Gobbart claims singles title The AFGRI Women’s Countryweek Singles final was a game of experience versus youthful exuberance. In the first semi-final Kathy Gobbart (Gingin), chasing another title to add to her impressive resume downed Joanne Lancaster (Beacon) 17-4. While in the second semi-final Jacinta Zadow (Kojonup) was too strong for Anne Waters (Bridgetown) 17-6. The final was played under heavy clouds with the occasional shower falling but it didn’t stop either player from performing to a high standard. Gobbart started the final by getting a two before Zadow levelled it up at 2-2. Again Gobbart got a two shot break and Zadow again levelled it up at 4-4. Zadow then continued on with it and raced to an 8-4 lead before seeing Gobbart played a great sit and stay shot to reel her in at 7-8. Again, level at 8-8, the two players went shot for shot with great draw shots as well as sit and stay or trailing the jack. The scores came together again at 14-14 and again at 15-15 it was anyone’s game. Gobbart threatened to take the game away by holding counts of three on multiple occasions but Zadow was up to the challenge drawing either second shot or shot. At 20-16 to Gobbart and with holding game, Zadow put the jack in the ditch to save the game. Not to be deterred, Gobbart again held game on the next end and this time was able to complete the job and take out the 2021-22 AFGRI Women’s Countryweek title 21-17.

Brunswick too strong in Fours The AFGRI Women’s Countryweek Fours final was an all South West affair with Brunswick’s Nie Archer, Noleene McCormack, Jo-Anne Norton and Margaret Exton up against June Beswick, Gail Botting, Maureen Beaton and Helen Paganoni from Busselton. Busselton started well with a 3-1 lead early before Brunswick fought back to 4-4 and then 7-7 after 8 ends. Brunswick grabbed consecutive singles to go to 9-7 but Busselton hit back to level it at 9-9. Then came the decisive swing, Brunswick took a well-earned four shots on the twelfth end and followed it up with a single and a three to take a match winning 17-9 lead with only one end to play. With all the shots covered on the last end, Brunswick took the much deserved 2021-22 AFGRI Women’s Countryweek Championship with a 18-9 victory.

Dudley Park triumph in Pairs The AFGRI Women’s Countryweek Pairs was played at the Osborne Park Bowling Club under heavy cloud cover and the occasional shower. Roma Dunn turned back the clock with her Dudley Park partner Lexie Webster to reach the final after an extra end in her semi-final against Goomalling’s Gail Lemos and Julie McLean. The other semi-final saw Jan Munday and Judy Flanagan (Binningup) defeat Irene Kozak and Carol Gorbunow (Port Bouvard) 15-12. In the final, the Binningup Pair started strongly winning the first couple of ends before Dudley Park got into the game with both pairs going shot for shot. 8-8, 9-9 and 10-10, there was nothing between the two pairs. It was then Dudley Park started to edge away, getting a two-shot lead at 12-10 and holding that lead until going into the last end three in front at 14-11 With Binningup needing three to force an extra end, Dudley Park got the shot and then just put in the cover to stop this from happening. After some valiant attempts but only a single shot to show for it, Roma Dunn and Lexie Webster took out the 2021-22 Championship. • Countryweek Pairs winners – Lexie Webster and Roma Dunn.

France goes back to back The Blue Ribbon Men’s Countryweek Singles at the Osborne Park Bowling Club saw last season’s defending Champion return to defend his crown. Matthew France (Merredin) was again outstanding as he outlasted Peter Cole (Pinjarra) in the final of the AFGRI Men’s Countryweek Singles. In the semi-finals France played spectacular bowls overcome the tough Johnathon Davidson (Albany) 21-6. Davidson had a terrific week but went unrewarded as he went deep into all three disciplines. The other semi-final saw Cole beat Mark Schinzig (Moodiarrup) 21-10 in a great display of both drawing and shot play. The final was set up to be a battle of two different styles, Matthew France being a very busy player while Peter Cole having a more deliberate and methodical style. With a few rain showers hanging around and no crowd in place due to covid spectator restrictions, both players were determined to put on a great game for the livestream audience. Cole started strongly leading 2-0 with France drawing back level before Cole again took an early two shot lead. The pair went bowl for bowl and shot in the early and middle stages with the scores locked together at 8-8. It was then France went up a gear and creating a break leading 12-8. Cole responded and slowly close the gap to eventually get back to 15-15. However again France took control and grab a three by a smart trail of the jack when Cole had a couple of short bowls put him on the path to the win. France then grabbed a single and finished it off with a two when having two bowls within a foot to defend his title and win the 2021-22 AFGRI Men’s Countryweek Singles.

Geraldton too strong in Pairs The AFGRI Men’s Countryweek Pairs Final took place at the Osborne Park Bowling Club with Shane Giudice-Nairn and Michael Ford (Geraldton) taking on Eaton’s Tim Stevens and Greg Slavin. Stevens and Slavin got a single on the first end to start well but it was the Giudice-Nairn/Ford combination that would dominate the next 8 ends to lead 12-1 after 9 ends. A mini fightback saw the Eaton pair get to 6-12 with two ends to play but a single to Geraldton left an eight required on the last end for the Eaton pair which was too much to expect. Shane Giudice-Nairn and Michael Ford would drop just a single to take the 2021-22 AFGRI Men’s Countryweek Pairs Championship 13-7.
• Michael Ford and Shane Giudice-Nairn – Pairs winners.
Emu Point finish big to win Fours The AFGRI Men’s Countryweek Fours final saw two very experience teams come up against each other. Matthew Mitchel, Jon Sharp, Doug Wright and Steven Tuffley took to the green for Emu Point while Ian Cartledge, Darren Kellond, Stan Hunter and Tony Dibello made up a South West Composite team. Emu Point would win the first end but the South West grabbed the early mini break with a 7-2 lead after 7 ends. Emu Point then started to put some winning ends together including 2 threes, drew level 8-8 after ten ends. Again at 9-9 after 12 ends it looked like it was going down to the wire. But then the experience of great shot play of Emu Point came to the fore and they would go onto winning the last five ends to take the 2021-22 AFGRI Men’s Countryweek Fours Title 15-9. Corrigin Bushfire Appeal 2022 raises $33,000 In February 2022 the Corrigin bushfire destroyed 48 buildings, including four homes, as it tore through more than 45,000 hectares of land. Many of those affected were members or had a connection to the Corrigin Bowling Club. In order to help those affected the club ran a special event carnival where 80 players turned up to fill 72 spots, all getting a game. Most were non bowlers who came along to have fun and help raise money. The bowlers travelled from 14 different clubs including four from the city and a couple from Queensland who saw the flyer at a Club during country week. Three games of 12 ends were played. During the lunch break Owen Catto from Regional Men's Health spoke to the mixed group on Talk to a Mate and then more specifically on prostate cancer. Staying connected is very important for men and he made the point that belonging to a bowling club was a great way to do just that. He applauded the day. The club was overwhelmed with offers, getting 27 individual sponsors, auctioning 19 items (mostly farm related) and raffling 11 boxes of mixed goods and vouchers. On the day over $33,000 was taken, an overwhelming success. This will be added to the Corrigin Shire's Fire Fund, to be distributed at a later date. Corrigin thanks all those whose participated to make this such a great event.

Champion of Champions
Three in a row for Leeman BC
The Central West Coastal Bowling League held its prestigious Champion of Champions event at the Dandaragan Bowling Club. Ladies played in very windy and almost humid tropical conditions throughout the day. Play commenced at 9.am and the last games weren’t completed until 6pm. The conditions were arduous for all players and officials who were juggling rinks between men and women. All came down to the last end with any of two players able to win. In the end Sandra Trenowden from Leeman Bowling Club defeated Jackie Helliwell of Jurine on the last of a tiebreaker. This win for Sandra made it 'three in a row'. In 2020 Chris Lewis won her third Champion of Champion. In 2021 Linda Prosser went through undefeated winning her first Champion of Champions. These three ladies play for the very small Leeman Club. With only a Ladies membership of 9, this is a really great marvellous achievement. Also, these three ladies have all represented their Central West Coastal League and Northern Zone in competitions and regularly travel near and far for games of bowls. • Chris Lewis.
