Take care and look forward to the future Welcome back for season 2020/2021! I'm sure after the limited amount of bowls played during winter we are all looking forward to the coming season. Hopefully the great majority of clubs are in a reasonable financial position following COVID 19. Clubs were able to take advantage of Job Keeper payments to retain staff, Cash Flow Boosts when lodging their BAS returns, electricity rebates from Synergy and as a last resort apply to their Council for hardship support. Bowls WA and your RBM's Clive Adams for North of the River or Steve Unsworth for South of the River sent a lot of information through to clubs in regard to these matters. I would like to thank Ken and his staff for keeping all clubs fully informed of the various announcements made during COVID 19 by the Federal and State Governments and how each Phase affected Clubs. The health of all our members was always the primary concern. Thank goodness we live in WA! As a result of COVID 19 Bowls WA was not entitled to receive any Job Keeper rebates. However, funds from Cash Flow Boost and Electricity reduction has enabled the Board to grant a 20% rebate in the 2020/2021 Affiliation fees raised. Hopefully this will further assist clubs in these difficult times. It is re-assuring to know the Association is financially strong and able to reduce this years fees by $150,000.
Annual General Meeting We held our AGM on 22 August which was very well attended by over 40 clubs. The highlight was Norma Samuels being presented with her Life Membership by the retiring President Kerry Andersen. Norma made a lovely speech and it was easy to appreciate her love of our great game of bowls. The AGM saw the retirement of our President Kerry Andersen, who could have continued but after 10 years on the Board decided to retire. Kerry is very well respected and led the Association through some difficult times. Hendy Cowan having served 10 years as a Board member was obligated to retire. Hendy was mainly responsible for Governance during his tenure and stood up for country clubs and in particular small country clubs. Our thanks go out to both of them.
4
At the AGM Doug Kelly took over the position of Deputy President and Glenda Cooper from North Beach was elected as a Board member. At the first meeting of the Board in August, Brian Lucas was inducted as an Appointed Director. Therefore, going forward we have a full compliment of eight Elected Board members and two Appointed Board members. It is a vibrant Board with a diverse skill set that will benefit the Association, as a Board will look forward to ensuring all our members continue to enjoy our great game.
Annual Awards Night Due to COVID 19 we were not able to hold our annual awards dinner at Crown in May. However, even though the 2019/2020 season was not fully completed the Board thought it appropriate to hold an awards evening in October and issue all awards for finalised events. It is very important for our annual champions to be recognised by their peers and I must say the 140 attendees had a wonderful night. In particular, congratulations to Laura Merz and Cody Packer for taking out the top awards.
The Everest Some events have been held recently. The Everest was conducted by Dudley Park Bowling Club from 8-11 October with 128 entrants. Due to COVID 19 again it was not possible to invite Eastern States players as in the past. However, Bill Brandsma won the event from Shane Knott 31-29 – a fitting final for a great event. Numerous other carnivals have been held and a lot of clubs have had excess nominations. Such is the desire of all bowlers to get back on the green. As I write this article in the week before the finals of the Men's and Ladies State Fours it is fantastic to see the number of nominations increase in both the competitions. Mens up from 74 to 87 teams. Ladies up from 29 to 39 teams. Lastly, we are in a wonderful position compared to other States in that we can resume pennants as scheduled in late October. I wish everyone a truly enjoyable and competitive season ahead.

WA to fare better than Eastern States Thankfully the season is now upon us and given any major health scares should progress as we would normally expect. That said who could have imagined that in mid-February this year the chaos that followed and still continues in parts of the Eastern States, could have possibly occurred. It would appear that here in the West numbers for events have returned well in excess of previous years – perhaps due to the inability to travel, but nonetheless a welcome sight. The state fours is a good example with at the time of writing and with entries about to close, entries for the men are higher than any time in the past 12 years and for the ladies since 2012/13, with a staggering 41% increase from last season. It is hoped that this season’s deserving winners will get their opportunity to compete at an Australian Championships on the Gold Coast in October 2021.
Affiliation Fee changes Bowls Link Co-ordinators and Club Secretaries will be aware of the change in structure of the Affiliation Fee for this coming season. Critical to the change will be the correct defining of members with Playing Rights as shown in the database as having a green dot next to their name in the system. Playing Rights need to be allocated to members who play bowls in ANY FORM outside of the Home Club. This will include out of season cash events, country carnivals or gala days as well as the obvious criteria of club championships, pennants and state events. A great deal of information has been forwarded to clubs over the past few months, however your Regional Bowls Manager or Bowls WA office are always just a phone call away for any clarification.

Annual Awards Night A revamped Annual Dinner and Awards Night was held earlier this month to recognize the high achievers from the 2019/20 season. It was a great evening culminating in the major individual playing awards being presented to Laura Merz (Manning Memorial) with the Connie Hicks Brooch and Cody Packer (Osborne Park) with the Rosenthal Medal – both very deserving winners. Well done to all finalists on the evening and to Clive Adams who fronted the night as the MC. A full rundown of the Awards presented on the night are elsewhere in Jack Hi.

There has been a number of queries as to the likelihood of any national events taking place in coming months. This has already seen the Australian Open, Australian Championships, World Championships, BPL and BPL Cup and various Sides Series either cancelled or postponed. At this time some of these events have been rescheduled for coming months, but all will of course be determined by the dropping of border restrictions early in 2021. More information to WA qualifiers will be forwarded once known, but it would appear unlikely that we will be visiting our Eastern States counterparts any time soon. That will be a great shame for our BPL Cup qualifiers who would be denied the opportunity to visit the magnificent Moama Bowling Club and watch BPL #12 in February. Similarly it would require a rethink on our Perth Suns selections, with the team likely requiring to be filled by Eastern States players (and coach) who can transition in and out of New South Wales and the border area. With a need to select a side by early December, the trailing effects of COVID-19 are still being felt here in the West.

2020 Bowling Arm State Singles Bowls WA hosted the 2020 Bowling Arm State Singles tournament on October 5 and 6 at Warnbro Bowling Club – with 39 final entries – a 22% increase in participation from 2019. Players started the event playing sectional round-robin leading into the winners of each section playing Quarter Finals, then Semi Finals and a Grand Final for Gold, Silver, and Bronze. All games, except the Final, were formatted to 18 Shots Up and/or 1.5 hours. The Finals game was 21 Shots Up and untimed. Warnbro Bowling Club was an excellent host supplying a first-class venue with 24 rinks – 12 under-cover and 12 outdoor. The volunteer help was exceptional from the kitchen to the greens – 17 Markers were required over 5 games of 1.5-hour duration. The meals provided were excellent and all needs of the players were met. Sectional Winners were Kevin Lynch (Safety Bay), John Lysaght (Halls Head), Allan Axton (Mandurah), Barrie Bywater (Toodyay), Ray Bairstow (Eaton), Laurie Blurton (Eaton), Billy Davies (Forrestfield), and Don Batt (Bunbury). Click here. The quality of the Finals games was exceptional as the tenacious bowlers had toucher after toucher, drew jack back from 3 down to make 4 up, and wowed the audience with their games!
• John Lysaght (Silver), Charles (Marker), Laurie Blurton (Gold).
• Warnbro Bowling Club.
However, only one player can achieve each medal…the end results were: 1. Gold: Laurie Blurton (Eaton). 2. Silver: John Lysaght (Halls Head). 3. Bronze: Barrie Bywater (Toodyay). Warnbro have sponsored a Bowls WA State Bowling Arm Championships perpetual shield and for the second year in a row the name Laurie Blurton is on the shield!!! The Shield’s home is found at Warnbro in the 'home of the Sandgropers State Bowling Arm' medal display cabinet.
• Allan Axton (4th), Marilyn (Marker), Barry Bywater (Bronze).

From the Umpires
Michael GOBLE-GARRATT
Umpires and their relevance to our sport Without rules by which to conduct any sport, there would, most likely, be only anarchic chaos with no clear aim, rhyme or reason for a game unless 'the last person standing' can be considered a goal. Certainly, sportsmanship would fly out the window with discouraging free-for-alls at every turn. The duties of an Umpire are set out in The Laws of the Sport of Bowls, Crystal Mark version 3.1 ~ Law 43, with Law 43.2.5 The umpire must make sure that all aspects of play are in line with the Laws of the Sport of Bowls. Summing up the primary role of an accredited Umpire. A good Umpire must know and/or where to find the Rules that govern our game, from the World Bowls Laws; the Domestic Regulations; the Policies and Conditions of Play at all levels from the Club to State to National and International Competitions that one might be involved in. Rules are even needed for those games that are trialled and played with rules that are different to the norm, such as the BPL, which have been introduced to add variety and attract broader interest as was achieved in the cricketing world through ODI and T20 forms of the game. But they still abide by rules based upon the Laws supplemented with, sometimes, more complex ones to ensure order and understanding of expected outcomes. At all levels, Umpires must keep abreast of the prevailing regulations pertaining to the game at which they are officiating if they are to remain relevant and must act in a calm and confident, knowledgeable, fair and unbiased manner at all times. By continued skills and knowledge practice, good Umpires will ensure the enjoyment of our sport by players and spectators alike.
The Importance of Correct Definitions Understanding the terminology and the basic definitions used in the various Laws and Rules are critical to arriving at appropriate decisions by Umpires. Players should also be aware of these definitions and as such, that should form part of their basic coaching upon entering the game. By not knowing the terms used, it is quite easy to come to false assumptions, examples of which are the basic definitions; Side and Team – often confused by players when describing issues arising, such as 'absentee' player and the consequence of that in various competitions.

The difference is described in Law 1 which sets out the various play arrangements we are likely to encounter. A 'Side' is defined as a combination of a number of individual teams (or singles) whose win/loss scores contribute to the aggregate for the whole side, such as our State Pennant sides. Law 1.3 Side game: A side game must be played by two opposing sides, each with the same number of teams or Singles players (or a combination of teams and Singles players). A 'Team' game is just that, a single team whose score applies solely to that team to achieve the relevant result. If a player is absent from a team game past the allowed margin of time and a substitute is either not permitted or unavailable, then the team must forfeit to the opposing team. In a side game if a player is absent, then the side must continue with that team playing one player short – In Australia – in fours that means 3 players playing with their usual number of 2 bowls and maintaining the correct sequence of play as per DR 2.6. 2.6.1.1 A team with an absent player plays as though the second is the missing player. 2.6.1.2 The order of play shall be maintained by the second of the complete team playing consecutive bowls. 2.6.1.3 Each player must use the number of bowls specified in the Conditions of Play for that event.
What all players must know to participate fully Where to stand is outlined in Laws 12 Position of players and13 Possession of the rink. Which clearly outline the position of players when they are not in possession of the rink – i.e. not their turn to bowl – behind the mat at the mat end and clear of the head at the other end – as soon as their last delivered bowl comes to rest. The team not in possession of the rink should not enter the head to look at the resultant delivery; they should retire to the allotted position immediately only allowing time to mark a toucher (for which the incoming player on the mat must allow time for that to occur). When a team (or player) is not in possession of the rink, players must not stop mid-rink to chat when crossing for the skips turn to play. That contravenes Law 13.3 in so far as it interferes with play and the consequence of such action can result in 'the bowl last played by the offending player or team declared dead.' after subsequent breaches following an initial warning from the Umpire. This can also apply to players standing in the head when it is not 'their team's mat'! Finally a tip to Thirds who are measuring and deciding the number of shots to be agreed upon: Clearly signal the shot or shots to the score card keeper, say "One to us," "Two to us," or whatever the case may be. Do not just say "One?" "Two?" etc.. There have been cases in which, when the claimer said "One?" his opponent thought that he was being given the one. – (from the Encyclopedia of Bowls – J P Munro 1951).

Life Membership Award 2020
Kaye Blackwell awarded Life Membership Kaye has been a loyal member of North Beach Bowling club for 24 years and has been in arguably one of the most difficult position for 14 of those years as selector and head of selection for the NBBC ladies. This position occupies much more than just the day of bowling and is often an all week affair with many phone calls and juggling of teams when players become unwell or are unable to play. Not only has Kaye as head of selection been instrumental in helping NB ladies to continuously field a Premier Division (formerly 1 Red) for all of that time but Kaye has been a driving force in selection and enticing quality new bowlers to our club. That has now resulted in a very strong ladies bowling competition and NBBC having 3 first division (in the Tuesday competition and a 2 blue and a 3rd division also Saturday’s competition) fields 3 teams including 1st division. Under Kaye’s dedication and leadership North Beach Ladies have won a number of flags and promotions and seen the growth of social and pennant bowls rise. Kaye’s dedication, integrity and love of bowls has resulted in her being a winner of State events (the latest 2 years ago with her daughter Donna in the state pairs) a WA State representative, an over 60’s State representative and Manager, a top Premier player, and a player who has played in and won many NBBC ladies events and competitions.
• Kaye Blackwell – North Beach Bowling Club
All of these events have been played with great sportsmanship and this has always been instilled by Kaye to all of the North Beach ladies that we should always have at the forefront of our playing and competitions that we are ambassadors for North Beach. Kaye's direction and integrity has ensured that many quality bowlers have aspired to join us at NBBC which has contributed greatly to NBBC success and I know Kaye’s many hours of work have been greatly appreciated by everyone of the ladies at North Beach.

From the Country Director
Ross WARBURTON
2020-21 season underway This year has been a year like no other, however the 20/21 season is up and running with all clubs being able to do their fixtures to start the summer as normal. Pennants have started and I wish all clubs the best for the coming season. Bowls WA had to postpone the Annual Awards Night which had normally been held in May at the Crown. This year it was held at the Royal Perth Golf Club on the 2nd of October.
Congratulations to Awards Night Winners Congratulations to Matt Mitchell on winning the Vice Patron's Award for the Men's Champion Country Bowler of the year and Bill Fraser for winning the Trevor Barron Trophy for the Most Outstanding Mens Over 60s Bowler of the year. To John Goddard congratulations for winning the Barns/McKenzie Trophy for the Most Outstanding Male Bowler in the Over 60s Side Series. Congratulations to Noelene Abe for winning the Norma Samuel Trophy for the Most Outstanding Ladies Over 60s Bowler of the year and the Beryl Brennan Trophy for the Most Outstanding Female Bowler in the Over 60s Australian Side Series. Noelene was also picked in the Trans Tasman Series. This year because of the Covid 19 lock down there wasn’t enough events completed in the Ladies Calender to award the Penny Needham Brooch for the Ladies Country Champion Bowler of the year.
Best wishes Kerry Andersen and Hendy Cowan I would like to take this opportunity to wish Kerry Anderson all the best for the future after 10 years on the Board of Bowls WA. She served as Country Director, Vice President and four years as President and as a country bowler climbed to greater heights in her bowling career to represent our State. To Hendy Cowan, also a country bowler, all the best for the future after his 10 years on the Board.
Affiliation model changed This year the Affiliation model has been changed because of concerns by Leagues that run mid week pennants. The previous model charged on number of pennant teams. This years model will charge Clubs on the number of members who have green dots alongside their names on Bowls Link. If you need advice on working this out contact Clive Adams or Steve Unsworth.
CCES The CCES has taken place with Tony Hockey attending a session for the Southern Zone in Katanning on 19th and 20th September. The South West Zone decided to cancel theirs because of the uncertainty of the Covid 19. Bowls WA have recognised a number of Country Bowlers who have been asked to participate in the Academy programme to help them fine tune their bowling and prepare them for future selection to the State Squad. May all bowlers enjoy the pennant season and hope that we can complete the season without the Covid 19 Virus bringing it to an abrupt end again. • Matthew Mitchell.

Brad Hogg continues in Ambassador role Former International Cricketer now turned lawn bowler Brad Hogg will continue his association with Bowls WA as part of a continued push to attract new people to bowls clubs and the sport that anyone can play. Hogg who joined the Manning Bowling Club where his parents Sue and Greg also play will again be the Bowls Ambassador, performing many promotional duties as part of his role in the upcoming 2020/21 season. The first of which was as a guest speaker at the Bowls WA Awards Night on Friday October 2nd which can be viewed on the Gotta Love the Bowlo Facebook page. The Gotta Love the Bowlo Campaign which will be re-branded in November will see Hogg as the face and voice of the new campaign. Hogg will voiceover a radio advertising campaign which prompts listeners to connect with their local bowling club.
Bill Brandsma wins Everest at Dudley Park The Dudley Park Everest of Bowls took on a local flavour this year with the Covid-19 situation preventing the normal influx of interstate and overseas competitors. However it was still a very strong field as the best in WA did battle over 4 days to earn a chance at the $36,000 prizemoney. In the end it was Bill Brandsma who emerged victorious defeating Shane Knott 31-29 in a thrilling final. Brandsma certainly earnt his win coming through two sectional qualifying days including a win over Dave Rankin before beating Corey Bessant 21-16 in the quarter finals and current Bowler of the Year Cody Packer in the semi-final 25-18. Congratulations to Dudley Park and the strong crew of volunteers who again made it another exceptional showcase of bowls.
The advertising slots will cover virtually all areas of Western Australia from Port Hedland to Kalgoorlie, Esperance, Bunbury, and of course metropolitan Perth. As part of the campaign Hogg will also feature in a 5-minute interview on 6PR Sportsday hosted by Paul Hasleby and Karl Langdon. The Sportsday program will also have a weekly Who’s on a Roll segment sponsored by the Gotta Love the Bowlo campaign. In addition to these promotions Hogg will feature in several other Social Media video clips which showcase the ways people are involved in the sport with the footage to be taken at several of the great community based clubs around Western Australia. Affiliated clubs can support the campaign by promoting the Gotta Love the Bowlo message through Facebook and their club website. A copy of the radio campaign message will be available to clubs along with additional support material. Clubs are encouraged to think about ways to engage new members and can seek the support of their Regional Bowls Managers to assist. But most importantly clubs and their members should be ready to welcome any new people visiting your club with open arms and integrate them into the sport we all know and love.

ways hearing aids may help you feel younger
Think hearing aids will make you look old? Think again. Not only are the days of those clunky beige devices long gone, the latest hearing aids — many of which are virtually invisible – work in ways that’ll give you a new lease on life, making you feel younger and helping you life to the fullest. Here’s how:
1 You’ll feel more energised
When hearing loss is untreated, your brain takes a hit trying to process the mixed messages your ears are sending it. It’s hardly surprising, then, that by the end of the day, you feel your age (and maybe a few years more).Wearing hearing aids may help take the strain off your brain, potentially leaving you feeling more energetic and lively.
4
You’ll be tech-trendy
5
You’ll keep your faculties
be on top of things 2 You’ll at work
What do young people love more than anything else? Technology. And those technological advances that seem to be happening at a rate of knots, also stretch to hearing aids. Many of today’s tiny devices are packed with sophisticated tech, some can even connect seamlessly with smartphones, music systems, computers…even the TV.And while they are discreet, you'll be amazed with the difference they can make.
Hearing aids may be the difference between the person in the boardroom looking confused and unable to follow the thread of the meeting, and the dynamo confidently addressing the room, not missing a beat, on top of what’s going on.
3 You’ll be socialise more
Socialising can be tough for people with untreated hearing loss. Noisy restaurants and parties aren’t much fun when you can’t hear what people are saying. Pop on a hearing aid, though, and those social occasions you may have been avoiding could suddenly become enjoyable again. Before you know it, you could be partying like its 1999.
Unmanaged hearing loss has been linked to depression, anxiety, even dementia.1 The good news is that using hearing aids may lower that risk, probably because they prevent over-taxing on the brain. If you think you may have hearing loss and have been holding back because you think hearing aids will age you, get in touch with us now and we’ll show you how you can rediscover the sounds you love … and feel more like yourself again. You're always welcome to pop in and chat with our friendly staff, or call 131 797 or contact us.

Barry Bettens… – gets results at Bullsbrook 'Probably the most successful action is his one to one assessment of a bowler, all laid out on a form with recommendations and practical training tips'. This statement formed part of Bullsbrook Bowling Club’s nomination of club coach Barry Bettens for the Bowls WA Coach of the Year. Clearly a coach that continues to seek further knowledge of the game from whatever source, Barry’s rapport with members, new and not so new, has raised the profile of coaching at the club immeasurably and not surprising results have followed. There are demands placed on the individual, commitment to the task at hand is important and although many sessions are group based, it is the one on one coaching that has stood him apart. Commitment, Professionalism, Competency, Respect are just some of the terms used to describe the club coach and it is this that has benefitted so many of the Bullsbrook members. For a club that has historically bounced around the lower grades, a club coach such as Barry will no doubt see short term improvement on the green and a greater appreciation of the role of the club coach off it – congratulations Barry the 2019/20 coach of the year.

Awards Night 2020 Volunteer of the Year
Adrienne Bellairs… – an all rounder at Waroona This year like no other has required the services of dedicated volunteers to guide clubs through the worst days of the COVID-19 pandemic. Some of course have been in for the long haul and taken up many roles in a club administration – often seen as being 'irreplaceable'. Certainly the body of work that has been carried out by Adrienne Bellairs at the Waroona Bowling Club justifies her selection as the Bowls WA Volunteer of the Year for 2019/20. Current Club Treasurer, ladies Vice Captain, holder of the gaming licence for the club, accredited umpire and delegate to the Murray League are just some of the roles carried out by Adrienne. But what perhaps stood out in her nomination from the club is her dedication to the roles, in particular the Treasurer’s role and the significant responsibilities that role undertakes. Living some 25km from the club in Harvey is no issue with regular as clockwork attendance at least three times per week for administrative duties – and the occasional game of course on top of all that! From the devastation of losing her home in the Yarloop fires to her continuing to serve the Waroona club uninterrupted – Adrienne is a more than worthy recipient of this year’s important award in a year that has valued our volunteers. Awards Night 2020 Lindsay Rosenthal Medal – Cody Packer
Packer wins the Rosenthal Medal The night of nights for lawn bowls in WA saw young gun Cody Packer take out the Male Bowler of the Year Award the Rosenthal Medal and become the 40th individual to claim the award joining a prestigious list of past winners. Having been on the scene for a number of years, Cody’s game has grown in the past few years finding what works for him and embracing who he is as a bowler to reach the level he is at today. The 2019-20 season easily his best as he recorded a number of big tournament wins. The Masters series proved a happy hunting ground winning the Mixed Masters Fours, Men’s Masters Singles and Men’s Masters Fours with a runner-up in the Men’s Masters Pairs. The State Pairs Championship win with Matt Mitchell no doubt another major highlight for Cody giving him his first State Championship victory. 2020 also saw Cody, along with his wife Hailey, who he credits as being his biggest supporter and often his bowls training partner, welcome their little boy Jasper, topping off an incredible year for the both of them. With two other children, Peyton and Austin, Cody and Hailey manage to find a balance in what is a demanding bowling season, work, and home life. Both Cody and Hailey credit Hailey’s sister, Cheryl Tyrrell, in making it possible for them to do what they do and supporting them both in all their endeavours.
16
Another influence on the bowler that Cody is today, is Hall of Fame recipient Therese Hastings, being both coach and mentor Cody credits her in helping him along his bowling career. After what was a fantastic season leading to the ultimate individual achievement, Cody thanks and appreciates those team members who helped him to achieve it, saying it clearly wouldn’t be possible without them. The Rosenthal Medal is the highest achievement for a male lawn bowler in WA and by the looks of things Cody Packer may only just be getting started.

, Awards Night 2020 Women s Bowler of the Year – Laura Merz
Merz’s magnificent year in bowls Manning’s Laura Merz has soared to new heights in 201920 and in doing so was rewarded with the Connie Hicks Brooch as the Women’s Outstanding Bowler of the Season at the Bowls WA Awards Night joining prestigious names such as Therese Hastings, Kristina Krstic, Helen Morss, Lee Poletti and Roma Dunn. Merz had a break-out season winning her first State Singles Championship, the Ladies Masters Singles and the Women’s 100 up Singles. Those three singles wins giving her the edge in what was a very competitive season amongst the Women this year, she edged out Hailey Packer who also had a great year on the greens winning the State Fours, Mixed Masters Fours and Ladies Master s Pairs. Merz who is a left hander joins the elite in the WA Women’s ranks and has done it at just 28 years of age having won all four major state titles in Fours, Triples, Pairs and Singles capping it off with her Bowler of the Year Award. Merz thanked her sponsor Drakes Pride, her family and friends and many team-mates who have supported her bowls journey so far. Merz credited her improved performance in the Singles events down to a bit of a change in her game play. By concentrating more on the draw and becoming very consistent in getting a number of bowls around the jack thus reducing the times she needed to play weight has worked to her favour this season. A humble winner Merz looks to have many more tournament wins in store and is part of a bright future of female talent in WA with team mates Kristina Krstic and Hailey Packer now emerging as the stars of the sport.

Metro Club of the Year – Bassendean
Bassendean crowned Metro Club of the Year From a large field of nominations Bassendean Bowling Club were announced as the Bowls WA Metropolitan Club of the Year for the first time in the Awards history which dates back to 1973. The club which was established in 1934 has really grown over recent years as the committee and a number of volunteer poured some real hard work into the facilities and running of the club with this award the culmination of plenty of dedication in 2019-20 and many years prior. Bassendean has worked hard to cement itself as a regular in Men’s Premier League and now boasts over 100 members including a revival amongst female bowls participation with them being one of just a few clubs to have grown membership in recent times. Its greens are now the envy of many others and are rated as amongst the best in the state, a real credit to the green keeper Graham. The club has assisted the Association in running many state events in recent years including hosting the Men’s State Fours and Country Week Championships. As Covid-19 struck the world, Bassendean Bowling Club saw this an opportunity. The President with the Executive Committee and the bar staff who were on Job Keeper got together to become the force behind a club renewal with some major club renovations completed during this time. Some of the bar work could not have been done without some period of shutdown, so they saw it as a blessing in disguise. A small contingent of people were working in multiple areas to comply with the Covid restrictions. As these restrictions eased the club had more members volunteering their time to improve the premises.

• The new bar area at Bassendean Bowling Club.
The Town of Bassendean worked with them to replace the bar flooring whilst virtually the entire club received a makeover in some way or another including the club toilets, main office, new audio system and the major bar renovations. Accepting the award President Linton Pike naturally thanked the support staff, committees and members of the club and remarked on how the club transformation during Covid was a small risk giving the time and money that was invested but equally how well that decision had paid off. The club had worked really hard on maximizing the available space and utilizing all areas to their best benefit. The transformation of the facilities had seen a huge lift in enthusiasm amongst members but he was so pleased that everyone had bought in to what the club had wanted to achieve and as such everyone had made Bassendean Bowling Club an awesome place to be.

Country Club of the Year – Emu Point
Emu Point – top country club Emu Point Sporting Club is an Albany based club which incorporates both Tennis and Bowls established in early 1970’s and they have now been awarded the Jim Murray Award for the second time in club history as the most Outstanding Country Club of the Year. They previously won the award in 1993. The club began the 2019 season in the best possible way with WA State Representatives Matthew Mitchell and Jon Sharp who both relocated into the area making Emu Point their club of choice. This was certainly to prove to Emu Point’s benefit with an improved Pennant season but also with Matthew and Jon going on to win the Country Week Pairs together whilst Matthew also won the Country Week Singles and State Pairs. Their experience and passion for the game was passed onto the members and in turn the club really embraced them which proved beneficial to everyone involved. Interesting whilst the Men finished second the Women’s Pennant team did clinch the pennant. However it was also a great season for the club off the green as President Doug Wright who accepted the award explained on the night. Emu Point is a real community club. The past committee really did a tremendous job for the club. In the past 12 months they added new synthetic greens, completed some major renovations on the games room, remodelled the family room and meeting rooms whilst adding new disable toilet facilities and incorporated an inclusive bowls program

including the purchase of bowls shutes for special needs players. The vast majority of these new projects were completed through club raised funding and volunteer support. Through promoting the club as a fun and family friendly venue, the club was able to add a dozen new members across the season. Everyone who has contributed to their success should be extremely proud and Emu Point are truly worthy club of the year recipients.
, Awards Night 2020 Men s Country Bowler of the Year
Mitchell – top male country bowler The Vice Patrons Medal for the Male Country Bowler of the Year was taken out by Matthew Mitchell from Emu Point. Matthew is young bowler who has been on the scene for a number of years returning to the country at the start of the 2019-2020 season after a stint in the city. Mitchell who grew up in Albany returned to his homeland to continue the family farm but has still clearly kept his form on the bowls green. A top competitor in Western Australia, Matthew had one of his best years, claiming the State Pairs title with friend and Rosenthal Winner Cody Packer. A highlight for every country bowler is Country Week which saw Matthew have Pairs success with his fellow club man Jon Sharp before taking out the Singles. Only three other players have ever completed the Singles and Pairs dual wins in 90 years of Country Week. With a young family who always support him in everything he does Matthew has joined a respected list of past winners. His also paid tribute to his club Emu Point who supported his bowling endeavours throughout the season despite it meaning he missed several pennant games whilst playing in State Championships. Congratulations to Matthew Mitchell on a fantastic year with what looks to be plenty more to come in the future.

Awards Night 2020 Women’s/Men’s O60s Bowlers of the Year
Country Pairs awarded Over 60’s best For the first time in the history of the Over 60’s Bowler of the Year Awards two country based bowlers have claimed the respective Men’s and Women’s awards for the 2019-20. Noelene Abe from Corrigin who has a string of major open tournament wins and awards claimed her first Norma Samuel Award for the Women’s Over 60’s Bowler of the Year whilst Bill Fraser from Quairading claimed his first major award of his career with the Trevor Barron Award for the Men’s Over 60’s Bowler of the Year Award. The Over 60’s events have continued to increase in entries since they were first run in the 2008/09 season and are now close to rivalling entries in the open category such is their popularity. Both players had good seasons which saw them win the Over 60’s Singles events for their respective genders. Both players were naturally quite thrilled to win. Bill spoke of his love of playing country bowls for his club Quairading but also makes the trip to Perth for midweek games with Manning. It was quite evident how much he enjoys the game saying, “What a marvellous sport this is. I belong to the best Men’s Shed in Australia and it’s called the bowling club.” Before thanking his wife for supporting him and allowing him to play so often. A humble winner Bill has been a high level player for many years and this win is worthy recognition for not only his efforts in 2019-20 but all the practice and dedication over many seasons. Noelene was equally as humble accepting her player of the year award also picking up the Beryl Brennan Award for Women’s Outstanding Player in the Seniors Sides Championships. Of course no stranger to picking up major awards she was full of praise for the Over 60’s program not only in WA but also within Australia. Noelene was extremely thankful to be picked for Australia at the Over 60’s level against New Zealand in late 2019 and was able to play alongside the open team and development side. It was another great year for Noelene who is hard to beat in any event regardless of age and a well deserved winner of this award, she has now won all major Over 60’s events and we expect to see her figure in plenty more finals yet. Congratulations once again to both Bill and Noelene, the respective Over 60’s Bowlers of the Year for 2019-20.

Champion of Champion Winners – 2019-20 Men
Rankin goes back to back with his victory Dave Rankin (Kardinya) has completed a rare feat by going back to back in the rescheduled 2019-20 WA Men’s Henselite Champion of Champion Singles by defeating Scott O’Brien (Manning) in the final played at the Yokine Bowling Club on September 13th. Rankin started the tournament with two narrow wins in his sectional games before building momentum throughout the knockout games, including a win against proven performer Cody Packer (Osborne Park) in the quarter finals. O’Brien also built momentum through the tournament with solid wins in the sectional rounds leading onto impressive wins over two State squad members in Cameron Harris (Cambridge) and Beau Manton (Bassendean). The two semi-finals were a contrast between players, with O’Brien dominating from the start and leading Manton 11-2 after 6 ends and then keeping his opponent in hand for the rest of the game to record a 25-9 victory. In Dave Rankin’s semi-final, Andy Rankine (Bullsbrook) started strongly to lead 10-6 after 10 ends before Rankin started to fight back. At 16-17 to Rankine it was anybody’s game when Rankin scored a two, four and a three to close it out 25-18. Dave Rankin’s ability to score in multiples was the difference in the match, picking up three two’s, three three’s and a four during the game. The final was played in glorious conditions at the Yokine Bowling Club, with the green running at a nice pace for players to show the small crowd their full range of shots. It was score for score throughout the first 12 ends with the players totals locked up at 11-11. O’Brien then won four consecutive ends to build a 17-12 lead only to see Rankin hit back and reel off six consecutive ends of his own to lead 17-21. Another fight back saw Scott O’Brien lock the scores back up at 21-21 but it was the experienced Dave Rankin who went on to score a two and consecutive singles to take the 2019-20 WA Champion of Champion Singles title for the second successive season, albeit delayed.

Champion of Champion Winners – 2019-20 Women
Hastings wins her second Singles title Therese Hastings representing Guilderton has taken her second WA Women’s Henselite Champion of Champion Singles title by defeating Sharyn Mercer (Morley) in the final at the Yokine Bowling Club. Hastings made short work of her opponents during her sectional games played at the Bayswater Bowling Club before finding it a little harder in her early knockout games but still prevailing in style. Mercer had to rely on some help from her opponent when she lost her first game in the sectional rounds. A strong second game, gave Mercer plenty of shots up and when the third round fell her way, she prevailed in the countback to decide the section winner. A big-time knockout win over Helen Morss in the quarter final would have given Mercer plenty of confidence going into the semi-final and subsequent final. In the semi-final, Hastings had to work hard early against Karen Miller (Mt Barker Golf) at 3-3 after five ends but then started to edge away as the game progressed. Six consecutive ends, including a four, put the lead out to 12-3. Although Miller hit back to get to 12-7, Hastings was always able to answer by usually getting two’s rather than singles. Five doubles over the remaining eleven ends of the game, made it very difficult for Miller to close the gap before Hastings finally prevailed 25-13. Sharyn Miller’s semi-final saw her up against the very talented Lisa Smith (Perth and Tatts). As in the other semi-final, both players were locked at 3-3 before Smith started to work away to hold an 8-13 lead after 13 ends. However, when the game finished after 26 ends, the scorecard showed that Mercer had won a huge 11 of the last 13 ends including the last 5. A number of two’s saw Mercer draw level before powering away to a 25-16 win. The final was a masterful display of consistent bowling from the WA Women’s State Coach, Therese Hastings. With Mercer not able to find her length, Hastings jumped out to a 5-1 and then 10-3 lead. There was a glimmer of a resurgence from Mercer when she was able to collect a three to make it 10-6 but Hastings soon put that to bed with another run of ends to move to 18-6. As in the semi-final, it was Hastings ability to score multiple shots each end that proved the difference. With Mercer scoring one three and the rest singles in her winning ends, Hastings scored six two’s and three three’s and only four singles meaning the total score built quickly and increasing the pressure. With the ladies trading ends for the last portion of the game, Hastings reached her target comfortably and therefore taking the 2019-20 WA Champion of Champion Singles title with a 25-11 victory.

Men’s State Fours
Mt. Lawley magnificient in victory Finals day of the Dyenamic 2020 Men’s State Fours took place at the Bassendean Bowling Club on Sunday 26th October with a magnificent crowd in attendance. The Semi Finals took place in the morning with comebacks in both games but not both being successful. In the first Semi Final, the composite team of Ryan Moyle, Kyle McIlroy, Steve Cerff and Corey Bessant took on Brad Ball, Chris Lander, Russell Bates and Ben Garratt also a composite side. The Moyle combination jumped out of the blocks with a five on the first end and followed it up with a four on the third end. More multiples followed and the game looked over after nine ends and Moyle leading 17-2. A couple of singles from Ball got them moving in the right direction as they searched for a length of jack to give them an advantage. Another two to Ball gave them three ends in a row and then a big five made it four ends and a score line of 17-11 to Moyle. A single to Moyle was only a momentary reprieve as the Ball foursome continued to put on the pressure with a double and a single to move within four with two ends to play. Another single to Moyle gave them some breathing space and they ran out winners 19-15 to move into the final. While the second semi final was moving in the same direction as the first, as one side jumped out to a lead, the ending was much more on the edge of your seat. The Mt Lawley team of Mark Masel, Anthony Einfield, Paul Sinden and Adam Graham started well before falling behind in their battle with Mosman Park’s Cameron Hoffman, Mitchell Cranswick, Terry Cranswick and Mark Robberston. At 4-4 after five ends it looked like it would be a seesawing battle before the Hoffman team grabbed a six and then a two to open up a quick 12-4 lead. For the next six ends, Masel ground away to reel Hoffman in by winning five of the next six ends including three doubles to move within one. A two to Hoffman on the fourteenth end extended the lead back to three but then they dropped a four and then a two to surrender the lead and go into the last two ends three behind. A single to Hoffman left them two behind going into the last end and when the last end bowls had been completed, Masel was down one for sure and umpire Sue Hogg was called to determine if an extra end was required. After a tense few minutes, umpire Hogg turned out the Mt Lawley bowl to cheers of the considerable Mt Lawley supporter base and sent the Mt Lawley team into their first state final. Going into the final, it was determined that a full Mt Lawley team had not won the Men’s State Fours since 1931 but with
24
• Mt. Lawley Men's State Four winners:
a large contingent of club members at the Bassendean Bowling Club the Mark Masel lead team were looking to make some history with the love of the crowd behind them. As the Moyle team did in the Semi Final, they started the match by grabbing a large number, in this case a 4, on the first end but unlike the previous game, Mt Lawley answered with a three and then three ends later got a four of their own to lead 8-5 after six ends. The more experienced Moyle team heaped the pressure on and if it weren’t for a couple of tremendous drives from Mark Masel, could have worked their way out to a nice lead. During the middle part of the game the two teams went end for end with one important difference. Moyle would score a single and the next end Masel would score a two, again Moyle would score a single and again Masel would reply with a two. This scenario went on for eight ends, so while both teams were scoring every second end, the lead continued to grow for the Mt Lawley team, and they found themselves up 16-9 after thirteen ends. Consecutive scores to Mt Lawley put them within grasp of the title and although Moyle grabbed a four on the third last end, it turned out to be too little too late. A two on the second last end put Mt Lawley eight in front with one end to go and they finished it off with another two as Moyle was trying to kill the end. A great win and first State title for Mark Masel, Anthony Einfield, Paul Sinden and Adam Graham with all four players contributing throughout the game. Adam Graham was particularly consistent in the lead position and was backed up very well with both Paul Sinden, playing second and Anthony Einfield in the thirds position, playing bowls at important times. Skip, Mark Masel played big draw shots and a couple of very good drives to lead the team out of trouble when required. It will be a day they will remember not only for the bowls but also the amazing support they received from family, friends and the Mt Lawley supporter base.

Women’s State Fours
Krstic back to back with last bowl The Bassendean Bowling Club lived up to its recently crowned Bowls WA Metropolitan Club of the Year status by producing first class facilities, hospitality, greens and of course weather for the 2020 Dyenamic Women’s State Fours final, with the game living up to all expectations by ending in dramatic fashion with an extra end and a last bowl draw for the title. The team of Lisa Featherby, Laura Merz, Denise Kelly and Linda Warburton (Mosman Park) had advanced to the final the previous week when they had an all the way Semi Final win over the composite team of Shari Solly, Sue Hogg, Anne Crabb and Sharon Lyster 20-12. The defending Champions of Kristina Krstic, Hailey Packer, Robyn O’Brien and Helen Heal (Manning) meanwhile had a back and forth game until finally breaking away in the last few ends to defeat the composite team of Noelene Abe, Irene Leahy, Elaine McDonald and Shelley Radcliffe 18-11. With all eight ladies having played in the WA Women’s State team in the recent past and with the excellent greens at the Bassendean Bowling Club, the final was set up to be a classic encounter of lawn bowls. While the Krstic combination won two of the first three ends, it was the Featherby team that took control early by winning six ends in a row to take a 11-3 lead. While all ladies were playing well, it was the consistency of Denise Kelly in the seconds position that was setting up the heads and the finishing skills of skip Featherby playing the big bowls. Whether it was drawing to the edge of the ditch twice after Krstic put the jack in the ditch or drawing shot when four down, Featherby was especially damaging in the first half of the game. At the point where the deficit was growing, there was no panic in the Krstic team as they used all their experience to slowly grind their way back. Robyn O’Brien, who always had impeccable line but struggled with the weight early, started to halve Kelly and with more bowls in the head gave her backend players more opportunities. As we have known in the past, opportunities for players like Packer and Krstic can be a dangerous thing for opposition teams. First a triple and then a double put the Krstic team back in the game at 8-11 and then more scores in two of the next three ends put them only one behind at 11-12. A solid three to Featherby on the fifteenth end of eighteen could have steadied the ship except for the fact Krstic got a four the very next end the bring the scores level. A single to each team in the final two ends saw the game level at 16-16 with an extra end required to separate the teams.

• State Women’s Fours winners: Manning Bowling Club.
Krstic’s lead, Helen Heal started the last end with what could have been a match winning bowl by putting it on the jack. It stayed in that position until the skips took to the mat and Featherby played a delightful little runner around the short bowls to jam the jack sideways three feet and to leave her team with the shot bowl two feet from the jack. Krstic’ first bowl pulled up just over two feet short and Featherby’s second bowl had good weight but was narrow, so it came down to the last bowl from Krstic to determine the winner. Could Krstic draw within two feet under extreme pressure to complete the comeback and win back to back Women’s State Fours titles. Once again Kristina Krstic showed why she is at the top of WA Bowls when her last bowl finished its journey within six inches of the jack to once again claim the title with her winning team of Hailey Packer, Robyn O’Brien and Helen Heal.

Doubleview Masters Fours
• Doubleview Masters Fours winners: Packer, Grigg, Marsland and O’Brien.
Packer side win delayed Fours After a Covid-19 enforced delay the Doubleview Men’s Masters Fours sponsored by Bethanie Group was able to be completed on Sunday 4th October 2020. Four strong teams took to the Doubleview greens to conclude the event which had sectional play 203 days earlier. In the semi -finals Cody Packer and his composite side of Anthony Williams, Dale Marsland and Lewis Grigg had a 1912 victory over the Cambridge line-up of Clive Adams, Sam Perica, Andrew Foster and Luke Bolton. Whilst the other semi was a blockbuster that went to an extra end before the Manning side of Shane Knott, Tom Mitchell, Stephen Patterson and Scott O’Brien prevailed over the local Doubleview team of Ryan Moyle, Kyle McIlroy, Stephen Cerff and Corey Bessant. The final looked an exciting match on paper and that was exactly how it panned out, the score was 13-10 in favour of Packer’s team with five ends to play. Up until that point everyone had contributed quite well to a pretty good quality final, the leads had a great tussle with O’Brien just holding the edge over Grigg. Marsland and Patterson shared the spoils pretty evenly, whilst Williams and Mitchell both played some great bowls however a couple of telling draw shots gave Williams the edge in that battle. Skippers Packer and Knott had broken pretty much even to that point. At end 15 Knott’s rink had played a really good end and held a very good three with shot bowl being three inches behind and slightly left right of the jack. Packer’s last was played with trail weight and landed the shot bowl for one up to make score 14-10.
26
End 16 and this time Packer’s side played a great end of bowls with Williams playing a superb forehand draw shot on the wide hand to front nose the jack for four. Mitchell then drew an almost perfect bowl to get second and the skippers were unable to change anything, which made it 15-10. On End 17 Knott's rink played an excellent end and had two very good shots with a foot. Knott drew another resting on them to make it 3. Packer played big weight and hit the pack but one rolled with the jack and then Knott drew a great shot with his last to make three again 15-13. End 18 was a scrappy end with the skips unable to change the head at all as Knott picked up two leaving it at 15 all into last end. With the pressure on the leads opening bowls were both a metre and a bit away, O’Brien then drew within 2.5 feet short however Grigg drew around it within 1.5 feet to hold shot. Marsland then drew a very good second shot. The thirds were unable to change anything and it was down to the skips. Knott’s first fell just short and Packer did the same still holding two. One each left, Knott played weight on the backhand and hit the front bowls which is what he was aiming for and they just missed jack dislodging just one of the shot bowls meaning Packer and his side were able to celebrate without playing the last bowl for a 16-15 victory. Congratulations to all those whose participated in the Men’s Masters Fours, well done to the Doubleview Bowling Club as host and a big thank you to the event sponsor Bethanie Group.

Winning Drive . . . delivering to WA clubs The Bowls WA 'Winning Drive' program, facilitated by Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural industries Every Club funding has enabled the delivery of crucial training to WA bowls clubs across the State, with 14 regional locations visited and a number of sessions conducted in the Metropolitan area and via Zoom. Locations included north to Geraldton, east to Kalgoorlie and south to Denmark, with many locations in between, and as mentioned, online. Clubs were invited to attend half day presentations, which were primarily broken into three different offerings:
BowlsLink Training As a sport, bowls has moved to a new management system called Bowlslink. The system is a membership management database enabling clubs to maintain records in one location, accessible, in part, by all levels of the sport. Clubs can use the system to maintain records relating to member information, member qualifications in terms of coaching and officiating etc, manage transfers between clubs and communicate with members via email. It is also the competition management system With many of our clubs managed by volunteers, face to face training on the computer management systems is crucial to understanding and use of the system. Strong evidence of the knowledge of the system is demonstrated by the efficient entry of results at the recent start of the season, as well as the health of many clubs membership database, with few questions being asked of Bowls WA or Bowls Australia.
The Community Engagement session was the most popular chosen and allowed us to delve deeper into knowing your community and demonstrating the key reasons why people should be part of our clubs. An introduction to this session was the Australian Sports Commission’s Market Segmentation Study video that presents some analysis on why people want to be part of the club life, and while some do not. It details the barriers to participation and is an effective way of getting clubs thinking at the start of the session. Next clubs were challenged to consider why the community, and certain demographics, would come to their club. What do they offer a single 35 year old female, a married couple with small children, pensioners, the disabled etc. How well do they communicate that with the community?
Communication
• Clive Adams delivering the training to WA clubs throughout the state.
Session 2 of each presentation consisted of a presentation/ discussion around Communication methods. How clubs need to be communicating with the different demographics in our community, and the most effective methods of doing so for each. Clubs were challenged to think about the way they currently communicate and whether it is truly effective. The use of video was discussed in detail, with a focus on how many people would rather watch a message be delivered, than read multiple pages of information.
We challenged Committee structures which are primarily inward facing, and asked clubs that if they really want to encourage more people to attend their club, do they have people whose job it is to promote such endeavours? Clubs were presented with ideas around how to engage their community through various channels, with examples of successful engagements used for more effect. For example, Bayswater’s resurgence as a club is primarily based on its engagement with its community – the club simply wouldn’t exist without it – these stories have been shared with other clubs as both an example, and as inspiration. Where we have seen a desire for social media, or other sessions that haven’t been voted as the majority, we have included links to them within the session chosen, and also provided session slides and notes on all the topics to attendees, rather than just on the primary topic chosen for their session.
Participants Choice The final session at each of the presentations was offered as a choice, upon registration, with whichever was the majority for each individual location then being presented. Choices were all very important topics to clubs: • Planning • Social Media • Community Engagement • Grants • Volunteers

Winning Drive . . . delivering to WA clubs – continued from page 27. There are many examples where we are seeing clubs learn from the sessions and put those learnings into practice: • Jurien Bay Bowling Club – now sends a regular newsletter, through BowlsLink, updating members on upcoming events • Cambridge Bowling Club – established a Committee to promote innovative ideas around key aspects of the club, with a view to more engagement with the community. Areas such as Food Provision, Music and Entertainment, Facilities and Promotion are key pillars, working towards a final business plan. The push towards this plan has been inspired by attendance at the Winning Drive Workshops. • Osborne Park Bowling Club – having attended a workshop where there was discussion around presenting different offerings to prospective club partners, the club, recognising it has a large industrial area close-by is investigating a 'Corporate Membership Offering', where businesses will be encouraged to sign their employees up as social members, and then use the facility for functions, occasions, or simply for gathering socially. This is a great example of embracing the area and the community. • Bayswater Bowling and Recreation Club – a club that acts when inspired. By attending sessions, and seeing ideas presented, the club puts it into action. Community gardens, a children’s playground and a seating deck are just some of the projects that while not directly attributable to the Winning Drive sessions, have certainly been partly inspired by some of the ideas shared. The sessions have been very well received by clubs, with many still looking for the opportunity to act on the ideas presented, especially given that COVID has taken the attention of many over the past six months. Bowls WA will now begin a brief period of review with this program as it again applies for another two years of funding through the Every Club grant program. It is expected future delivery will include a focus on training clubs to embrace technology and change whilst the prospect of some Regional Bowls Expos similar to the very successful Metropolitan Bowls Expo is also being considered.

Life Membership Award 2020
Phil Manning – Life Membership at Moora When a club decides to give its highest honor, a Life Membership, it is a recognition of the member’s commitment and contribution on and off the green for a considerable time. This is certainly true in the case of Phil Manning who has been involved with the Moora Bowling Club for about forty years. He joined as a ‘fresh faced’ lad straight out of school and has been an ornament to the club, his family and himself for all that time. He has played State Bowls as Cap 97, represented the Country versus the City on many occasions, played Inter Zone bowls on a regular basis and has represented the Central Midlands Bowling league countless times. He has played pennant bowls for Moora since • Phil Manning he was able and has been the Skipper that the pennant side has been formed around for many years. He has been a regular at Country Week Bowls and has won the Fours twice and has been down to the last four in the Singles and the Pairs. There have been many good bowlers play at the Moora Bowling Club and his name sits very comfortably amongst the top two or three. If you look around the honor boards you will see he has won seven Singles championships including a Champion of Champions at League level, as well as innumerable Pairs, Triples, Fours and Mixed Pairs. He would probably be quite happy for the person who beat him for the next championship, but be certain that player will have to fight tooth and nail to do so.
Although he cherishes those Singles titles he prefers to be part of a team so he can celebrate with teammates. He loves the game, takes great pride in his performance, (he is his own harshest critic) and respects his opponents. Like most good players he used to find it hard to understand why lesser mortals couldn’t do what he found simple. However, he has mellowed enough to shrug his shoulders and smile a little when he asks a team member to perhaps take a little more grass. But his skill at the game is only part of why the honor is being awarded. Some long term members think that you would only have to use one hand to count the number of working bees he has missed. At all those working bees his family would have provided and he would have used some very expensive equipment. For many years before the synthetic green went in he and his father maintained the grass greens to a standard equal to any in Perth. Nearly every evening you would see him watering, mowing, rolling or testing the speed. I am fairly sure he has been heavily involved in the laying of five greens, 'A' green twice, 'B' green once as well as the synthetic green twice. Add this to the renovations, rejuvenations, spraying of the green and upkeep of the equipment, the four years he spent as Club President and the five years he was Bar Manager, he has spent a lot of his life at this bowling club so we can all enjoy it. – Contribution by Chris Van der Ende

Moora has a great start to the season Having been established in 1957 and situated about two hours drive north of Perth in the Central Midlands Bowling League with 45 members, the Moora Bowling Club has made a successful start to the bowls season.
Club Derby a thriller Moora men held their 1st Pennant Derby for the season, playing for the Ted Dhu memorial trophy. You can’t get any closer with 1 shot deciding the result across the 3 rinks. Well done to Moora Black on defeating Moora Blue by the 1 shot 60-59. Played in great spirit and all agreed Ted would have enjoyed the day. Thanks to the five ladies for playing in Chris Donegan, Alison McPherson, Chris Van der Ende, Maree Wass and Robbie Gardiner. Debbie (Ted's daughter) was there to present the trophy and to watch some great bowls. Thank you both for braving the cold weather to watch the Derby.
Ladies Open Day a success
• Debbie Hueppauff presenting the Black Team Captain Paul Walsh with the Ted Dhu Memorial Trophy.
The Moora Ladies Open Day was a great success today with 14 teams enjoying the great weather, awesome camaraderie and not forgetting the great bowls and the occasional not so great ones. Our winners for the day was Margie Johnsons team from Dandaragan, 2nd Sib Glatz team from Cervantes and 3rd was Winsome Kelly’s team from Bindoon. Thanks to our awesome sponsors for helping make this day a huge success. This year we chose to support The Smith Family. Part proceeds from our club raffle and all sales from our first time holding a donated items table. Happy to say we will be donating $550 to the Smith Family. Thanks to everyone who supported this. Well done to our Ladies Match Committee for running a great day and our food was second to none. Thanks Michelle Cockman and crew for a great day in the kitchen. – Information provided by Chris Van der Ende

Jack Attack on the rise
Jason Titheradge who is part of the Manning Jack Attack experience takes us through their local competition… An initiative of Bowls Australia the Jack Attack program allows clubs to bring the BPL format and style of play directly to clubland, where they can capitalise on it’s social, fast paced format to help boost participation, by appealing to people opposed to playing in longer formats like pennant, and providing a more structured competition than social barefoot bowls. Located 10 minutes from the Perth CBD, on the hallowed greens of Manning Memorial Bowling Club on Challenger Avenue, Manning Jack Attack could be best described as the most entertaining midweek social bowls tournament between 'Manning Road and the Canning River'. The competition was started in 2015 by then-Manning Premier League bowler (And 2020 Country Bowler Of The Year) Matthew Mitchell and his wife Kate, succeeded by Manning Premier League bowler AJ Heal in 2017, with club pennants player & committee member Richard Price looking after the competition since 2019. From an initial 12-team turnout, the current Summer 2020 edition has 22 teams competing in the 6-week competition, with approximately 80 bowlers of all ages and abilities taking part every night.
No fewer than 12 current and former Jack Attack players have gone on to play Pennants for the Eagles, while the competition has also attracted the likes of a former Australian test cricketer, a West Coast Eagles premiership player, and a Paralympic gold medallist. For any new bowls players wanting to get involved in Jack Attack, the club’s volunteers are willing and able to offer coaching to anyone wanting to learn the basics of the game. The majority of the players live within the local area, with some travelling just to enjoy the Manning experience, but all teams have something in common. They’re either work colleagues, partners, neighbours, darts teammates, family members or school parents, who have all come together to have a fun game and a good laugh on a Wednesday night.
Games get underway at 6:30pm, usually taking 60-75 minutes, with teams playing 2 Sets of 5 Ends (3 bowlers per team bowl 2 shots each), both teams have a ‘Powerplay’ end (Double scores) to use in both Sets, with a tiebreak end to be played in the event of teams winning a set each, or tying both sets.

Get to know the BowlsWA board
Jack Attack hits its straps at Manning Teams earn 2 points for a set win, 1 point for a tied set, and 1 point for a tiebreak win. In an effort to promote competitive games and a sense of fairness in the ladder, the weekly fixture is ‘graded’ – The winners of the previous week play each other, and the losers play each other, a format which has proven successful at Manning. Along with the prizes for the overall winners, prizes are offered weekly for the teams who record the two biggest margins of victory, plus, there’s several novelty competitions, like the popular Corner to Corner challenge, and the ‘Spider’ challenge, and the end of season awards, like Best Dressed, Best Team Name, and Most Improved Team. The competition has seen many funny novelty team names entered in recent years, such as the Great Bowls Of Fire, The Bowled & The Beautiful, The Bowling Stones, Unbelievabowls, Wrecking Bowls, Irritable Bowls Syndrome, The Bowlsheviks and the Trevor Chappells… Some teams even go as far as making co-ordinated team uniforms! Lastly, being a social bowls competition at dinner time, we do have plenty of hungry and thirsty bowlers, and just for that, the club’s kitchen offers a wide variety of delicious meals, and the full bar service has everything from the classic Swanny D to white wine, with some teams even requesting to play on the synthetic just to cut down on travel time to the bar. In all, you’ll rarely have a dull Wednesday night at Manning Memorial, so if you’re ever in the Manning area in February or November, come on down to the club and check it out – Everyone’s welcome! Name: Ross Warburton • Club: Brunswick and Districts Bowls Background: I started playing social bowls in my late twenties at Brunswick Bowling Club. I was asked to play in Club Championship Fours with my brother in law when I was 32, we won that championship and defended it the following year and I was hooked on bowls from that point. I have been Club President for two years, and am Club Treasurer at the moment. I have won our club Fours, Triples, Pairs and Singles plus the Southwest League Championship Pairs and Singles. Work Background: I was educated at Scotch College in Perth. Returned home in 1968 to help my father on the family dairy farm. When my father passed away in 1976, my brother and I worked the farm in partnership until 1998 when we split the • Ross Warburton. partnership. I became initial Board Director of Harvey Water in 1996. Leased my farm in 2003 and in 2004 became field officer for Brownes Dairy which was owned by New Zealand Company Fonterra. I became Milk Supply manager in 2008 for Fonterra in WA before retiring in 2009. What do you love about Bowls: Bowling clubs are not just a place to play bowls. They have an environment where you can meet other people your age and as you get older, bowls becomes another way of keeping active. When you travel and visit a bowling club you are made welcome and no matter what age you are, you are able to have a game. What would you like to see Bowls WA achieve in next few years: To increase better communication to the bowling members. Also harness the opportunity we have with social bowling numbers increasing Australia wide, this would mean encouraging them to participate in higher level competitions.

Mixed Masters Fours
Nairn claims Mixed Masters win at Sorrento • Dave Adams, Eugene McNamara, Brent Morey and John Kelly.
Lawn bowls can throw up some amazing results, but this lot takes some beating…
Badges galore for Kardinya teammates
• Mixed Masters Four winners.
The opening event in the Dyenamic Masters Series was completed with the Trevors Carpets Mixed Masters Fours. Being played for just the second time a strong field of 32 teams took to the greens at Sorrrento Bowling Club on Sunday 27th September with 3 rounds of sectional play to narrow the field to eight finalists. In a tough day with a couple of rain delays it was the composite side of Blake Nairn (Cambridge), Brad Gillingham (North Beach), Shari Solly (Osborne Park) and Lee Bunney (North Beach) who claimed the trophy and the major share of the $8,000 prizemoney on offer. Nairn’s team proved just a touch too good for a local side skippered by Shane Loftus in the final winning 15-10. Teams skipped by Cody Packer and Willie Te Pania were the beaten semi-finalists. 34
At Kardinya, on Saturday 31 October 2020, the club’s 5th Division Red team scored a massive 142 to 34 win over Belmont City. Not only is the aggregate score thought to be a record for a three-rink pennant match in Western Australia, two of the Kardinya teams achieved 50-plus scores, while one of these teams recorded a rare eight on two separate occasions for the afternoon. The most dominant rink was that of Kardinya’s Brent Morey (skip), Dave Adams, Eugene McNamara and John Kelly who eclipsed the Belmont City crew 57 shots to 16, and scored two lots of eight in the process. On a nearby rink, Kardinya teammates Barry Burley (skip), Joe Spadaro, Tom Smales and Dennis Andrew scored a 54-6 win over their hapless Belmont City opponents. This adds up to 16 badges being won for the afternoon—eight 50-badges and eight eight-badges. The previous highest aggregate score by a Kardinya three-rink division was 131. That was a few years back, and again Brent Morey was involved. The previous highest rink score by a Kardinya pennant team was 52, which was achieved on 2 February 2013, with yet again Brent Morey being the skipper, Barry Burley (third), John Cranny (second) and Fred Langford (lead). So far in his bowls career Brent has won five eight badges and three 50 badges. Wow, what an achievement! – John Terrell BowlsWA • Jack Hi • November 2020
