New bowls season sees new initiatives Some very exciting news is the launch of the 'Gotta Love the Bowlo' Club Marketing Campaign which has seen a sizeable investment by the Board of Bowls WA towards the future of the game. Having been apart of the process with our appointed creative design team at Lateral Aspect, I look forward to spreading the word with clubs and those in the game to get the message out to the wider community about just how much fun and great our sport is to be involved in.This campaign is primarily about getting new people into clubs and enjoying what our wonderful clubs around the state have to offer. We really want everyone to get behind this drive for increased membership whether it’s social or bowls members, the more people in the doors at clubs the healthier our sport will be in the future. Good bowling to everyone out on the greens for 2017/18.

Proposed pennant format defeated at AGM It has been a busy few months since the last edition. A strong attendance by clubs at the July Annual General Meeting saw the defeat of the proposed new pennant format, with the 2017/18 season to return to an 18 game pennant fixture. It was a disappointing result for Bowls WA, and a lost opportunity to invigorate the pennant season with a new shortened format of the game. I would like to thank Pieter Harris and the Fixtures and Events Committee who accepted the decision, and swiftly moved to redo the calendar and fixtures. Unfortunately this decision of the meeting led to the resignation of Board member Mr Brian Lucas. I thank Brian for his contribution to the Board – we will miss his expertise. Mr Larry Bandy of the South Perth BC, has since been appointed to the Board in the Casual Vacancy. Larry comes to the table with extensive experience in finance, and is a former State representative.

State coaches and selectors announced The State coaches and selectors have been announced for the ensuing two years. Men’s Coach Tony Hockey has been reappointed, with Lindsay Thorn appointed Assistant Coach. Therese Hastings and Elaine McDonald have been reappointed as Coach and Assistant Coach of the women’s team. The Men’s selectors are Roger Barns, Michael Zusman and Glyn Vaughan. Helen Stevens and Jaewyn Norton were reappointed as selectors for the women’s team.

Bowling Arm representation For the first time, a team of fifteen players represented Western Australia at the National Bowling Arm Championships at the Moama BC in September. The players enjoyed the experience and look forward to the growing participation of the event and further success in coming years.

Commonwealth Games officials Congratulations to Sue Hogg, Wiggy Harley and Elaine McDonald, who have been appointed to officiate at the Commonwealth Games in April next year. This will be a wonderful experience and we wish them well. Sue Hogg is also to be congratulated on her appointment to the National Officiating Committee.

Mandurah APL Cup Competition was at the forefront of the recent Mandurah APL Cup. Thirty two teams played a shortened version of the game and vied for the right to represent WA at the BPL Cup in November.

The Henselite team were victors of the Cup in a wonderful final which was decided with the last bowl of the match. As the BPL Cup is a club based competition, runners-up, the Osborne Park team, will be travelling to the Pine Rivers BC. It was an exciting event for both spectators and players, with some great bowls witnessed.

President's Forum The President’s Forum was held on September 20 at the Stirling BC. Representatives from fifty metropolitan clubs heard presentations on the BCIB Club Insurance opportunity, Top Club – strategic club planning tool, the Club Resources Guide as well as the amendments to the Conditions of Play 2017/18 and a resume of the calendar for the forthcoming season.

'Gotta love the Bowlo' Clubs were then introduced to the exciting new state-wide promotional campaign 'Gotta Love The Bowlo'. With a jingle and video to be released, along with a digital media and television campaign, Bowls WA have invested heavily in this promotion of the game to attract people to our clubs.

Club Affiliation fee Bowls WA responded to questions from the floor re the Club Affiliation Fee. An assurance was given to clubs that the constitutionally required review would be considered by a representative Committee of Review. Submissions would be accepted for consideration. WA’s new RBM Steve Unsworth was introduced to the meeting. Steve replaces Shenayde Heldt who has relocated to Darwin. Thanks to Shenayde for her services to clubs in the southern region of WA.

Plenty to look forward to in coming months As I write the State Under 18 team prepares to fly to Taren Point NSW (Editors Note: Full report on page 12), the Over 60’s teams are travelling to the Copper Coast in South Australia in October, and the Perth Suns will join Osborne Park in representing WA at Club Pine Rivers in November in their respective BPL competitions. Pauline Bourne and Clive Adams will contest the Champion of Champion Singles event in Darwin in October, and our State winners from last season travel to Club Sapphire in Merimbula in November to play in the reconstituted Australian Championships event. We wish all these players success and hope they enjoy the experience. I wish all bowlers a happy and successful season and I look forward to seeing many of you around the clubs.

Plenty of opportunities there for players The President has alluded to the number of events that have or are about to be played by our various representative teams. It shows the wealth of opportunities that are available to all players, highlighted by the fantastic BPL Cup, which will see a new format for WA 2018. The new structure which will be promoted by our RBM’s will see a number of regional and metropolitan 'qualification events' played, further broadening available entries – in fact a team can enter multiple qualifiers, which all lead to the final and the chance to represent WA in the BPL Cup. Our under 18 and over 60 teams look particularly strong on paper and a strong showing is guaranteed – multiple titles are not beyond those teams.

Bowls Connect 2.0 Later in the month the President and I will travel to Queensland to be briefed on the next version of our current Bowls Connect system. The existing contract will come to an end in mid 2018, which will see a new and improved system rolled out across the country. The preferred supplier will be announced in due course by Bowls Australia and we have been fortunate that Aaron Delaporte (Operations Manager) has been a member of that selection panel and gained a first hand insight into the options available. Irrespective of the supplier some further systems training will be required and this will be coordinated as it was a few years ago when Bowls Connect 1.0 came into being. Rest assured all relevant club personnel will have appropriate training in order to best utilise the systems many improvements.

Investing in our future The President has also touched upon the exciting new campaign Gotta love the Bowlo that will be rolled out in coming months. The campaign which features a combination of digital and traditional media has been specifically designed to be catchy and memorable – some may say a departure from how many of the community view our sport! And of course that is just the point. The campaign will look to attract people to our clubs, in whatever capacity that may be. Clubs need to be ready and on the front foot when a member of the public, who has little knowledge of our sport or what benefits our clubs can provide to them, come knocking. A media pack is being worked upon which we hope clubs will have received with their pennant stock in mid October. In the end the campaign will generate interest, but it will be how the club handles that enquiry on the day that will determine its overall success or otherwise. I ask clubs, country and metro to be ready and welcoming – it will be to your advantage.

Good luck all It has been a rather interesting few months in the office and I thank the staff and various committees for their on-going work and patience. The pennant season is upon us and with it, all that our great game brings. Treat team mates and opposition with respect and enjoy our bowls for what it is – a game.

Club Coach Course reaches Singapore Disabilty Bowls

Inclusive Practices team participates in APL In another first Bowls WA put in an Inclusive Practices team at this year’s Mandurah APL Cup. This event sees 32 of WA’s best teams converge to play Bowls Premier League style. The format is four sections of eight clubs or teams who play nominated pairs with substitutes over seven sectional games that consist of two sets of five ends and a possible one-end tie-break. Teams are allowed to use 'Power Plays' that, if successful, will double their score for the nominated end. The top two teams from each section then enter the quarter finals and fight for the right to continue to semi-finals and finals. The Inclusive Practices players included David Ravlich (deaf bowler: Cockburn), Eddie Gollan (para bowler: Rossmoyne), Kerry Ward (Bowling Arm: Eaton), George Hayden (Aboriginal bowler: Forrestfield) and managed by Denise McMillan. For a team that had never played together before they did extremely well, coming 3rd in their section and raising a few eyebrows! A lot of comments were made about our team shirts, chosen to honour Aboriginal Heritage and themed 'Turtle Dreaming' with a focus between people and land – apt considering our sport needs both to succeed! 6

In a unique twist the most recent Bowls Australia Club Coach Course conducted in Mandurah at the beginning of September included a contingency from Singapore Disability Bowls. The group has links in WA through family members and put forward a request to attend the Club Coach Course as this is not something available in Singapore. The idea is to combine the course itself and the knowledge the group gained on bowlers with disability to create their own Disability Club Coach program. The Club Coach Course focuses on coaching at a club level with individuals or teams and covers a broad range of general coaching theories and specific skills such as bowls skills and tactics, delivery options, shot development, technique analysis, line and weight variations in different environments, inclusive activities, specific position responsibilities and effective communication strategies. A special thank you to Bernard Foo, Ben Hong, Helen Lee and Chin Kim for participating and for their enthusiasm in developing Inclusive Bowling Practices! It is an honour to think that WA has advanced enough to be of practical assistance to other Countries in the area of Inclusive Practices in Bowls!

Bowling Arm team compete at Nationals After twelve months of planning, training, and development the new WA Representative Bowling Arm Side – named the 'Sandgropers' – showed up in Moama NSW to compete in the 2017 Australian Bowling Arm Challenge in September. Seventeen players including two reserves travelled by plane, car (one blew up on the Nullarbor!) and motorhome to attend this event for the first time. Phil Gude, State Coordinator for the Victorian Side, met the players and supporters that flew in to the airport and welcomed WA to the competition. The 2017 Arm Challenge was run by Bowls Victoria and the group did a tremendous job with Graeme Bridge, CEO, as Manager. The WA Sandgropers, managed by Laurie Blurton of Bunbury and ably supported by Judy Stein of Mundaring, should be very proud of their achievements in representing WA – the calibre of performance both on and off the green was exemplary. One day started at 9am and ended at 10pm – and players were still smiling albeit a little tired!

Victoria is a very organised and well managed team who are selected by invitation. It was a credit to WA players that the tournament was played on carpet surface – the more they played the better they got! One skipper over five games had a win and four draws! In another Singles section against South Australia, WA won all games with shots up 97 to 87. The 2018 Challenge will be held in NSW at East Maitland Bowling Club and Sandgropers are already preparing for the event. A pressing decision to be made in the coming months is, "Will WA host the 2019 National Bowling Arm Challenge?” Keep your eyes and ears open for further news in this area! Leaving the green and game stoppages Welcome to a new season and, in particular, to the 193 newly accredited and re-accrediting National Umpires and Measurers at courses conducted during the off-season in the Metro area and Country Leagues. Congratulations and thank you for your commitment. Just a reminder to everyone that practice makes perfect – because a competent Umpire's decision can also enhance the sportsmanship displayed in a game when any decision is made in a most proficient manner by a confident Umpire. Special thanks are also owed to those volunteers who have undertaken the Officiating Presenter and Assessor course and have given generously of their time conducting the new courses and particularly those in the Country Leagues.

Leaving the green and game stoppages One group of Laws that seem to cause quite a bit of confusion are those relating to leaving the green under various conditions. The confusion appears to arise out of confusing Game stoppages with leaving the green. Game stoppages can arise from adverse weather or a number of other valid reasons, and require an Umpires decision or agreement between players when an Umpire is not present and are covered by Law 32 and all its sub-clauses. Whereas Leaving the green generally applies when a player needs to leave the Green for personal or other legitimate reasons – these and the consequences of leaving the green are fully covered by Law 33 and its sub-clauses. 32 Game stoppages 32.1 If a game is stopped because of darkness, weather conditions or any other valid reason by: 32.1.1 the Controlling Body; 32.1.2 the umpire after an appeal has been made by the players; or 32.1.3 agreement between the players when an umpire or a representative of the Controlling Body is not present; the game must be continued either on the same day or on a different day. The scores will be as they were when the game was stopped. 32.2

If an end has started but all the required bowls have not been played, it must be declared dead. (The end must be declared dead even if one or more players choose to remain on the green during the stoppage.)

32.3 If all the required bowls in an end have been played but the process of deciding the number of shots scored (as described in law 23) has not been completed, the number of shots scored must be decided before the game stops.

33 Leaving the green during the course of play 33.1

No player must delay play by leaving the rink of play or their team unless their opponent agrees, and then only for no more than 10 minutes.

33.2 If a player has to leave the green during the course of a team or side game due to illness or some other reasonable cause, and they cannot return within 10 minutes, the umpire or the Controlling Body can approve the introduction of a substitute.

Some FAQs: 1. Can the mat be repositioned before the first bowl or after one or more bowls have been delivered? Yes, if the mat is displaced or out of line with the centre line it must be straightened on that line. The mat at all times should on correct the centre line, even if bowls have already been played when the mat is noticed to be off the correct line, as can happen where multiple centre lines have been marked on a green. Laws 6.2.1, 6.2.2 and 6.2.3. 2. Can I use a texta or felt-tip pen to mark my touchers? No, Law 15.1 clearly states a toucher should marked be with chalk. So unless the 'texta' is chalk based it cannot be used. Of course, it is better to mark touchers with spray chalk and, in fact some ‘Conditions of Play’ insist upon it, so as not to inadvertently move the bowl. 3. Where can I find a summary of the Etiquette of Bowls? Bowls WA website or the Umpires Committee can provide a copy upon request. They comprise a list of common sense and general courtesy items that make for a sportsmanlike game. Some of these ‘courtesies’ are actually covered within the Laws of the Sport of Bowls Crystal Mark 3rd Edition This pennant season Bowls WA, through the Umpires Committee, will be trialling a measuring device, known as a WBGT (wet bulb, globe temperature) Heat Stress Meter similar to those being used in industry and some sports when working/playing in hot/humid conditions. It takes into account radiant heat, ambient temperature and humidity to arrive at a 'degree' of heat-stress impact instead of temperature-only abandonment criteria. Five clubs representing a spread of Metro clubs will be asked to record pre-, mid- and post-game readings of their thermometers and the WBGT meter over the coming Pennant season.

Pennants to begin in the new season Another bowling season is about to begin with most Bowling Clubs having or about to have their opening days. Pennants are just around the corner with most Leagues looking at October 21st start. I take this opportunity to wish all players an enjoyable season and make themselves available for Inter League and Inter Zone Round Robin teams which will be held early in the New Year.

Country Coaching Clinics Country Coaching Clinics were held in late August/ early September with each Zone having good numbers. Thanks to the P&A's and local coaches who attended these clinics. This year we changed the timing by asking each Zone to organise the date and venue. We have had positive feedback from participants for this decision. Next year we are considering asking interested people to nominate for next year's CCES by 30th April 2018. Nomination forms will go out in March and we are hoping interested players will nominate before they go on their winter break.

Mandurah APL The APL competition was held at the Mandurah Bowling Club on the 23rd and 24th of September. It was another resounding success with teams from the country performing very well. Congratulations go to our top Lady Country bowler,

Noelene Abe who was part of the Henselite team who won the final. Next year on the 6th and 7th of January the Northern Zone will be holding their own APL Cup with the winning team getting an automatic invite into the APL run by Bowls WA at Mandurah. Following on from that we would be hoping the other Zones could run their own with the winners getting an invite into the Bowls WA APL.

Bowls WA Promotional Campaign By now all clubs would have received the information about the new promotional campaign by Bowls WA. This was initiated by past president Graham Leeks who thought the money that you put into bowls through your affiliation, should be spent on promoting the game of bowls. It was the view of Lateral Aspect, the agency employed to provide recommendations to the committee, that a different form of promotion style was required in order to cut through to the targeted audience. TV advertising will start in the New Year and will be seen in all country areas. I must take this opportunity to wish all the men and women in the Over 60’s State teams, who will be representing WA in October all the best. This year it is being held in South Australia. Hoping everyone enjoys their season of bowling.

New Regional Bowls Manager for WA New Regional Bowls Manager Steve Unsworth joins the Bowls Australia fraternity this month as the RBM responsible for the Southern WA Region. All affiliated clubs located south of the river in the Metro area, as well as south of the Great Eastern Highway in country regions can avail themselves of Steve’s services at no cost. Steve comes to the role following the departure of Shenayde Heldt who recently moved to Darwin. He is currently a member of the Pinjarra Club where he is the club champion – he also finished equal third in last season’s WA Country Week Singles championship. In terms of work history, Steve has previously worked in Ten Pin Bowling where he had a varied role including managing staff, coaching, recruitment, promotion and sales. In more recent times, he has worked in sales roles primarily in the blinds and window coverings industry. Clive Adams, WA’s Northern Regional Bowls Manager welcomes Steve to the team. “It is with great pleasure that we welcome Steve to the RBM team. The RBM team shares a passion for bowls and hopes to help clubs in many areas to ensure the future of our great sport.” “We would remind clubs that the RBM process works best when clubs contact us when they would like help. While we try and arrange meetings as best we can, we are more effective when a club has a specific issue or idea that they would like help with.” The RBM team consists of 18 passionate individuals that travel around the country visiting clubs, sharing ideas both with clubs and amongst the team, in an effort to encourage participation and to build healthier, stronger, more attractive clubs. Some of the areas that your RBM can assist with are:

Participation Programs Jack Attack, the newest social format of the sport, continues to grow nationwide with many clubs signing up and finding their programs very successful, bringing new people to their club and creating a wonderful atmosphere on what might otherwise be a quiet night for the Club. Jr Jack Attack, the junior equipment product aimed at primary school children. Schools are enjoying the equipment that allows them to play bowls right there at school, on just about any surface. RBMs are visiting schools and encouraging them to play bowls, and plenty of schools are doing it.

Sharing Successes RBMs play a key role in sharing great success stories across the country. Clubs take inspiration from what has worked for other clubs – it’s not just theory, it’s practical experience that they can draw on.

Sponsorship and Grants Your RBM can assist you in obtaining funding for your Club, whether through grant applications or sponsorship methods. The grants world is an extremely competitive one, so enlisting your RBM to assist with the application documentation, and the process, will give you the best chance of success. Sponsorship is also a challenging area for many clubs. There are some great ideas out there to help you engage with sponsors in a far more effective and pro-active way. Talk to your RBM for assistance. Partnerships with BA partners, help with technology, help with club planning and so much more. Under 18s Australian Championships

Walding wins Silver medal Kaleb Walding has taken the only medal for Western Australia at the Under 18's Championships held at Taren Point Bowling Club, New South Wales. Walding faced a tough test against a rising star of bowls in NSW's Jono Davis who also had the home ground support. Walding wasn't daunted however as he began superbly with his draw game to the fore he raced to a 7-1 lead early. The skill of Davis then began to show as he started to counter with some good draw bowls himself and when needed took out Kaleb's closest bowls with extreme accuracy to race to a 17-8 lead over the next half dozen ends. Kaleb played many good bowls which just missed the jack or shot bowl and can be considered a touch unlucky on many ends. Howeverhe fought out the contest well but when trailing 19-12 Davis played the match winning bowls with a great conversion followed up by a top draw shot to secure the two shots needed for the title. • Jack East in action for WA at the championships.

A replay of the Boys Singles Final is available on the Bowls Australia Facebook Page. In the other disciplines the Boys Triples team of Patrick Quinlan, Marcus Simpson and Cory Day played well in the Bronze medal match but were just edged out in the late stages by South Australia 17-16. The Boys Fours finished in sixth place after losing two sectional matches by just 1 shot and the Pairs fifth with a good 22-12 win beating NSW in the final match. For the girls who played combined with NT in the team events the Pairs and Triples both won their final against NSW to finish fifth.

Under 18s Australian Championships

Georgia Cant finished sixth in her first singles performance for WA, the Fours also finished sixth both going down narrowly to Tasmania in the final playoffs. Under 18’s Coach Ken Perks was full of praise for the team. “I would like to thank the team for their efforts over the four days of competition. We tried with all our might to succeed but the opposition were just that little bit better most times and we have learnt a lot for what is needed to succeed.” Ken is keen to build the juniors program moving forward in WA. “To try and put it into prospective NSW had 120 players to pick their squad from where we had only 18 players so that is where we need a lot of hard work for us to get up to that level. I will be working hard to set up a plan of attack over this season to come, in the hope more juniors will be available to represent the State, this will include training sessions in both the city and country areas.” In regards to the Under 18’s Championships Ken added, “I don’t like singling out anybody in the team because the girls tried their hearts out as did the boys but Kaleb was outstanding in his games and Patrick (Quinlan) as the skipper of our teams played over and above the call of duty.” “I would like to thank the parents that went for your support for the team – it was fantastic and appreciated by all of us. Also special thanks to Lee-Anne Green as team manager who did a fine job assisting the players in every way possible.” Congratulations to all the players who represented WA with pride and distinction.

Stirling Adriatic Club – a club on the rise

A nine year plan at Stirling Adriatic Centre is coming to fruition as the club gets closer to unveiling an updated facility later this season. The updates includes the currently under construction state of the art nine rink fully enclosed bowling green with a Dales Allpro woven blue carpet which will give the club a year round bowls facility. The club also has plans for a Bowls Shop, proposal for a TAB facility, along with an outdoor play area for children. Construction of a child minding facility on the club’s property is a proposal currently under consideration. The Stirling Adriatic Club has been able to fund these developments through the sale of surrounding land for residential housing. They are in a unique situation having full ownership of the land and buildings. Stirling Adriatic Club President Bernie Martinovich is thrilled with the recent developments saying, “This is the start of a new era for our 42 year old club, hopefully the new facilities will entice a new generation of members to the club and keep the club successful for many years to come.” The Club recently employed well known WA state bowler John Slavich to the role of General Manager. John is looking forward to the challenge of a new club after being at Doubleview for 21 years. With the help of Bowls Australia Regional Bowls Manager Clive Adams, Stirling Bowling Club has launched a new face book page and is progressing with a website upgrade.

They are also establishing a relationship with local schools and the local community in running future Jack Attack and Jnr Jack Attack programs at the club. An exciting announcement was delivered at the annual Club Presidents' forum on Wednesday night 20th September at Stirling Bowling Club, with the launch of a state wide marketing campaign for Western Australian Bowling Clubs called 'Gotta Love the Bowlo'. The campaign produced in conjunction with creative design company Lateral Aspect has been a key focus of the Bowls WA GOT TALOVETHEBOWLO .COM.AU Club Development Committee and is built around a need to attract new people into bowling clubs in WA. The campaign will see an unprecedented commitment by the Board of Bowls WA towards the future of the sport with no direct cost to clubs. The campaign is multi-facetted with the key message being bowling clubs are a fun place to be, and whilst every club might be a little different every club has reasons to be loved. The campaign welcomes people to find their nearest club and find out why you have just 'Gotta Love the Bowlo'! The campaign contains the following: • Dynamic and vibrant 'Gotta Love the Bowlo' website with searchable club info • Professionally produced marketing material • An advertising video and jingle • A six month online digital media campaign • A metro and country TV advertising campaign beginning in 2018. Bowls WA is also encouraging clubs to support the campaign in their local area. Western Australian clubs will receive a Gotta Love the Bowlo media pack which will help them spread the message, it includes copies of the marketing and advertising material.

Women’s State Training Squad announced The Bowls WA Women’s Selection Panel have announced the Women’s State Training Squad for trials to represent Western Australia at the 2018 Australian Sides Championships in Northern Territory at Darwin and Nightcliff Bowling Clubs May 3rd – 6th 2018. The Squad includes eleven of the twelve Side Players from last year, missing only Shenayde Heldt who has moved to the Northern Territory and may well be an opponent at next year's Series! Noelene Abe returns to Squad selection after having to step down from the Side last year due to health concerns. Linda Warburton has come out of semi-retirement from the Open Women’s Team after announcing last year that she would be focusing on the Over 60’s events. Kim Simms and Debra Rhine return to again compete for a position in the State Side, while newcomers Jill Adam, Rhonda Creyk, Robin Higgins, Robyn Jolly, Wendy Marsh, Jenny Rogalski, and Sally Wilke are sure to put their best bowls forward whilst competing for Side Selection. With a slightly different format this year, the initial 22 Women selected will form part of the Women’s State Training Squad. This Training Squad will be reduced in number to 16 to form the final Women’s State Squad prior to Christmas. The State Side will be announced mid-March prior to the Side Series commencing in May. Mens – Premier League Preview 2017-18 The new pennant season commences on October 28 with another big season of Premier League action on its way.

Tight competition again looks likely Last season’s men’s Premier League was one of the tightest in history with sides being involved in finals races and relegation battles at the same time and even a Grand Final that went to extra ends. The reversion to the traditional bottom two relegation will be a welcome boost to the clubs in mid table with two extra safe spots available in the league. Current premiers Manning will begin their defence at Kardinya in a replay of last year’s preliminary final. The Eagles are likely to be mostly unchanged but recruit Dale Marsland will be a chance to make his debut at some stage. Manning haven’t lost anybody from their premiership squad and look for them to be figuring late again. Two other contenders will meet on the first day of the season with Cambridge set to host runners up Osborne Park. The Saints have backed in their side to find one extra shot on last year and haven’t made any recruitments. They have lost former state skip John Goddard to Hopetoun but he missed most of the back half of last season as well. Cambridge however have looked to strengthen by bringing in options to their backend. Former Australian Indoor runner up Lance Strahan returns to the game after a five-year hiatus and is their biggest addition although he may need time. Speaking of big additions Doubleview look to have been involved in the most transfers this off season. The return of Scott Edmonds is their best in and will help cover the hole left by John Slavich’s departure. Two mid-table clubs from last year who’ll be looking to return to finals contention are Bassendean and South Perth.

• Manning were the 2016 Premier League winners. They look likely to figure strongly again in the coming season.

Neither have been able to attract any big names on the transfer front with mostly depth players making moves. However, for the Lions the loss of Andy Elmer will put yet more pressure on that third’s slot where Bassendean have lost a lot of players over the last couple of years. South Perth have a cloud over the availability of Ross Bresland who will leave a massive whole in their side. Neither team was far away last year but have made no obvious improvement. Kardinya will also find themselves fighting for finals places having kept their core together. Home ground advantage means they’re always a chance. Stirling and Wanneroo both earned a reprieve due to the format change and compete in the top flight once more. Stirling struggled for much of last season and may do so again despite landing the recruit of the season in John Slavich. Wanneroo will be more optimistic but haven’t brought in anybody to help them move up the ladder and will have to rely on internal improvement. New boys Morley will be optimistic they can survive their first season back in Premier League given they beat Wanneroo in a playoff last season. Andy Elmer’s return is a solid pickup to strengthen them as well and they look one of the better promoted sides in recent seasons.

Womens – Premier League Preview 2017-18 With the new pennant season beginning on October 24 clubs are running out of time to prepare for the upcoming women’s Tuesday pennant season.

Tight competition again looks likely Player movement around the Premier League clubs has been minimal this off season. Does this mean that everyone will stick to the status quo or will there be some surprises? Defending champions Manning look to be the favourites again with 10 of the 22 women’s state squad members plus WA coach and games record holder Therese Hastings. One of those players Connie Hicks Brooch winner Helen Morss however will not be playing this season due to work commitments. The Eagles have also lost state lead Shenayde Heldt following her move to the Northern Territory. Shaan Saunders and Amanda Masters have also moved on to rivals Osborne Park. With two sides in Premier League again this season losing those players will likely put a lot of pressure on the second side. Sally Wilke (formerly South Perth) and Ronda Creyk (formerly Thornlie) are handy recruits who have just been named to state voting squad and will no doubt help the cause. Saunders and Masters should help Osborne Park deepen their squad and push on after a finals campaign last year and are perhaps the team to cause an upset. With solid skips as well they’ll be right in it all year. Mosman Park are usually Manning’s main rivals and will be one of the chief threats again this season. They’ve picked up a couple of players to help with their depth with the most notable player Joanne Lancaster coming in from the country. They’re one of the most experienced sides in the league and will be sick of second place. Speaking of experience Gosnells have some of the most experienced players in the comp. In particular team spearhead Angela Sharp will be tough to overcome for anybody again this season.

No big moves on the transfer front means they’ll have to look internally for improvement this season. North Beach are perennial finals contenders and contain enough quality to do so again. Another club that’s been quiet in the off-season none of their ins jump out as stars but they don’t need to find much more to contend. Sorrento contain the backend quality to continue the push up despite not adding to the side. Kathy Gobbart is a match winner at her best and the side also contains current Champion of Champions winner Pauline Bourne. Leeming are very much becoming part of the furniture at Premier League level having enjoyed an extended stay without much fanfare. They’ll be looking for a similarly solid season and to keep clear of the relegation zone again. Any team that seemingly has made Manning their bunnies has to be respected. Safety Bay return after a year out with a similar team to what they had in their previous Premier League season. As former regulars they’ll be confident that they’ll have enough to stay up and are solid at the backend to be a big chance. Melville also come back again having finished top in White and will be looking to finish as high and safe as possible.

• Nic Naitanui has been busy at the Mount Lawley Bowling Club where he is Patron of the Club.

NicNat springs a bowls surprise While many of the Western Australian public were wondering if the West Coast Eagles would spring a selection surprise by including Nic Naitanui in their AFL finals campaign, instead he’s been busy at the Mount Lawley Bowling Club where he is Patron of the Club. Recently, the Club held its Opening Day to commence the new season, and it was none other than NicNat himself, who lives near the Club, that showed up to give the members some inspiration. “It was great that Nic was able to make it,” said Club President Keith Scott. “After having to duck to get through the door, Nic was keen to acknowledge the skill and effort that goes into our great sport. He understands the skills required, and has fallen victim to some of those skills out on the greens himself.” After a short presentation inside the Club, it was out to the greens for Naitanui himself to ceremoniously deliver the first bowl of the season. “He’s actually got a pretty decent style,” said Scott. “We will definitely be looking to sign him up in the future, but for now we will just look forward to seeing his exploits on the footy field come next season.” The September period is always a busy time for Mount Lawley Club, as not only are they looking after the start of

the season for their own members, but they also have the traditional season opener, the Consistency Singles, which sees the best players of both genders, from all over the State, gather to compete for one of the most prestigious titles on the calendar. One such name, synonymous with this great event is Irving and Keenan Real Estate. Mount Lawley Consistency Singles Results

Top class bowlers on show The traditional season opener the Mt. Lawley Consistency Singles saw some great bowlers from both the Metro and Country areas battle it out over five days for the men and four days for the women. Well done to all of the bowlers who played this year. The weather for the whole tournament was glorious, with warm sunny days every day. The Men’s competition had a total of 188 entries spread over three elimination days getting down to the last 16 on Saturday 16th September and the Women’s a total of 76 entries spread over two days getting down to the last 16 on Thursday 14th September. Some of the better known men bowlers such as Matt Mitchell, Scott Walker, Ryan Moyle, Nick Reagan, Clive Adams, Neville Woods and last years winner John Slavich were still in it, however did not progress to the final day. This year saw some new faces in this round. Chris Parr from the Mighty Quinns got to the Quarter final stage, a young man from Joondalup, Ben Leggett lost to Peter Wachmer of Fremantle in the last 16, Mt Lawleys own Paul Sinden in this round losing to Stein Davies in a close game, Lewis Grigg from Osborne Park overcame Keith Bowden of Fremantle but lost in the Quarter Final to Matthew France. Sunday morning saw the men’s semi finalists on the green. Stein Davies v Shane Knott; Matthew France v Peter Wachmer. The Women’s line up also had some well known bowlers make it to the last 16 and no further. Theresa Hastings losing to Helen Morss both previous winners, Linda Warburton losing to Renate Coote, Jennie Bruce to Nerrida Porteous, Irene Arndt to Kerry Andersen, Amanda Masters to Renate Coote. Making it through to the final day were Lisa Featherby, Nerrida Porteous, Kerry Andersen and Noelene Abe. Sunday morning saw the women’s semi finalists also on the green. Lisa Featherby v Nerrida Porteous; Kerry Andersen v Noelene Abe. The women's semi final winners were Lisa Featherby and Kerry Andersen. Lisa overcoming Nerrida Porteous 101 - 79 and Kerry getting the better of Noelene Abe in a very tight game 105-95. The women’s final saw two Mosman Park Players take to the rink with Lisa Featherby playing Kerry Andersen to 120: Lisa got off to the better start nosing in front to be 12 shots up (41-29) but Kerry fought back to be within 2 shots (9694) and then Kerry hit the front when she scored a 10 to be 6 shots up (102-108), however Lisa stormed back scoring a 9 in the next end and taking out the following 2 ends to win 125 - 115. The men's semi final winners playing to 130 were: Shane Knott overcoming Stein Davies 132 to 128. until Shane got an 18 shot lead at 104-86 which he managed to hold getting to 129-111, Stein then drove clearing Shane’s bowls off the rink and scoring 10 to make it 129-121. Stein also got a 7 in the next end but not enough Shane getting the 3 to win. Matthew France taking out Peter Wachmer 133-117 in another tight encounter, which was very close until the last three to four ends, we had 80 all, then 95 all, then Matthew got a bit of a break to lead 114-106 and won the next 3 ends to get to the final. The men’s final to 150. Shane Knott v Matthew France. Another close encounter on the green with Shane drawing beautifully to get in front in the early stages 37-23 and Matthew bouncing back to reduce the deficit to 6 shots 78-72, then Shane getting in front again by 18 shots 134-116 and Matthew bouncing back again, winning the next 2 ends to be within 8 shots 139-131 However Shane saw it through with some delightful draw bowling to win the next two ends and take the winners prize. Henselite team bowls them over at Mandurah Cup Team Henselite are the winners of the 2017 Mandurah APL Cup held over the Queen’s Birthday Long Weekend. The sponsor’s side defeated Osborne Park in a one end tie break to clinch the title courtesy of a fantastic end by skipper Brad Ball. Ball played an excellent runner and followed it up with a beautiful draw shot to leave opposing skipper Cody Packer few options. It was the culmination of a strong run for Ball and substitute Noelene Abe who took the second set 9-3 to tie the game. Osborne Park had won the first set 5-4 due to an awesome drawing performance from both Packer and lead Lewis Grigg. Osborne Park didn’t leave the event empty handed, earning the right to represent Western Australia at the upcoming BPL Cup competition at Club Pine Rivers. The Mandurah APL Cup served as a qualifier for the event this year however Henselite are unable to take the place as it

is a club only tournament as explained to all clubs prior to the tournament beginning. The final capped off a highly successful weekend of bowls at the Mandurah Bowling Club with all 32 sides competitive throughout. The format will be seen by bowlers again on Fox Sports when the Perth Suns head to the BPL at Club Pine Rivers in November. Sorrento and Thornlie both topped their groups against expectation showing the quality and depth of the field invited. Other section winners were equal thirds Cambridge and the runners up Osborne Park. A highlight of the weekend was the performance of the Bowls WA Inclusive Practices team who won their last four games to finish third in their section. Para-bowler Eddie Golan, deaf player Dave Ravlich, Indigenous bowler George Hayden and bowling arm user Kerry Ward all performed well while bringing much needed awareness to the inclusive practices program. The best performed of the country clubs was Busselton who accumulated 18 points to finish fifth in their section and only one point behind third. The format of play once again proved to be a hit with many of the players who participated. The format will be seen by bowlers again on Fox Sports when the Perth Suns head to the BPL at Club Pine Rivers in November.

CCES – Country Coaching Enhancement Scheme

CCES held across four country zones The annual Country Coaching Enhancement Scheme was held across the four country zones within Western Australia in recent months. The Country Coaching Enhancement Scheme gives nominated country bowlers access to experienced coaching with the purpose of improving talent and knowledge of country bowlers in WA. The Eastern Zone saw eighteen bowlers attend Dowerin Bowling Club where Bowls WA coaches Jaewyn and Paul Norton along with two local coaches took the players through various drills and knowledge to assist their game. The South West Zone held their CCES on Saturday 9th September at Bunbury Bowling Club with well known state bowler and coach Linda Warburton in charge. Ray Jarvis from Mandurah Bowling Club, was one of those in attendance, and said, “This was a great event, highlighted by the opportunity to learn how to: read the head, tighten techniques, develop more consistency and the importance of team play. Linda was very positive and developed these traits with all participants. I learnt a lot and am very appreciative of Bowls WA for providing this opportunity leading up to my first pennants season.”

Gnowangerup Bowling Club hosted the Southern Zone CCES with Men’s State Coach Tony Hockey assisted by six zone coaches taking a dozen players once again through various drills and skills sessions to help improve their game across the weekend. The Northern Zone decided to cancel their CCES due to having only two nominations however held a private coaching clinic which was well attended with 24 participants and run by well known bowler and accredited coach Kathy Gobbart. Apart from the direct coaching Kathy also assisted a number of other coaches in improving their skills and knowledge as coaches with the view to having local coaches to continue coaching clinics within the Northern Zone in the future. The Country Committee has already met to look at ways to continue to improve the CCES and ensure valuable coaching knowledge can continue to be accessed in the country and bowlers of the future continue to receive the necessary training and development needed in country areas. Thankyou to everyone who attended and interested country bowlers should look out for nominations forms through their Zone in April 2018 for the next CCES program.

Capel Bowls Club

Bowls Day out for racing and trotting fraternity at Capel It was a big day for the local Racing and Trotting fraternity on Sunday 10th September 2017, not at the track, but on a different surface, the Capel bowling green. The Capel Bowls Club invited the Racing and Trotting industry to an inaugural bowling challenge where the two entities played off against each other in a two game event. Over 50 participants took part in the event which saw some best suited to the 16 seconds track while others failed to stay on the green.

Some moments should have led to a steward’s enquiry as consecutive bowls were sent down on a wrong bias. Some games ended in a draw while others were blow outs leaving the team no choice but to go for a spell. What you need to know about your rights as a Parent (What you need to know about the rights of the children to spend time with each of their parents OR What you need to know about your rights as a parent) If you have children and you separate from your partner, it’s important to know about your rights as a parent. Understanding the law and knowing your rights means you can make informed decisions – so here’s what you need to know about your rights as a parent.

Basic principle of family law The underlying principle is that the best interests of the child/children should be the main concern following separation. So while your responsibility as a parent does not change if you separate, the Family Court will always consider the best interests of the child as the paramount consideration, if it becomes necessary for the Family Court to be involved. In determining what is in the child’s best interests, the primary considerations that the Family Court must consider are: (a) the benefit to the child of having a meaningful relationship with both of the child’s parents; and (b) the need to protect the child from physical, sexual and/or emotional harm. There are also a number of additional considerations that the Family Court must consider, including: any views expressed by the child; the age and maturity of the child; the nature of the relationship of the child with each of the child’s parents and other relevant persons (including grandparents or other relatives); the likely effect of any changes in the child’s circumstances; the capacity of each of the child’s parents and any other relevant persons (including grandparents or other relatives) to provide for the needs of the child; the parental responsibilities demonstrated by each parent (or relevant person); any other fact or circumstance that the Family Court deems relevant.

Equal shared parental responsibility There is a presumption in the law of equal shared parental responsibility, unless there are extenuating circumstances to rebut this presumption, such as a history of serious abuse or domestic violence. But equal shared parental responsibility does not mean equal time. If parents have equal shared parental responsibility, it means they will both have equal responsibility to discuss together and make long-term decisions about the child’s welfare and development. This includes discussing together decisions about the child’s education, living arrangements, medical and religious matters.

What to do if you separate The easiest way to work out your parenting arrangements is if you and the other parent either come to a verbal agreement (although this will not be binding or enforceable), formulate a parenting plan (although this will not be binding or enforceable) or apply for parenting orders by consent. A parenting plan specifies the care arrangements of the child, but it’s not legally enforceable, so it depends on mutual cooperation. BowlsWA • Jack Hi • Spring 2017

Coming to a verbal agreement, formulating a parenting plan or applying for parenting orders by consent are usually beneficial for both parties, as it means you shouldn’t need to go to Court - which is often a time consuming, stressful and expensive process. However, a parenting plan or verbal agreement are not a good idea if there is a history of violence or abuse in the family. Parenting orders (whether made by consent or otherwise) are legally enforceable.

If you cannot agree on a parenting plan If you and the other parent can’t agree on the child’s living and/or spend time with arrangements, you should consider applying to the Family Court for a parenting order. But mediation is compulsory before making such an application, unless certain exceptions apply. A parenting order usually specifies where the child/children live, who they are to spend time with and communicate with (and when), how much time they spend with the other parent, arrangements on special occasions and holidays, and any other special conditions such as schooling or medical treatment. When you apply for a parenting order, the Family Court will consider a number of factors before making parenting orders, including the following: • Is the child protected from harm? • Will the child benefit from having both parents in their life? • Should the parents have (equal) shared responsibility for decisions about the child? • What are the parents’ attitudes and commitments about parenting? For example, do they pay child support (and if not why)? Have they been spending time with the child (and if not why)? • Depending on the age, does the child have any strong views about their living arrangements, and are they mature enough to make an informed decision about this? This will usually only be one factor, if the child is deemed mature/old enough, not the determining factor.

Mandurah Bowling and Recreation Club

Inaugural Hall of Fame 2017 Mandurah Bowling and Recreation Club recently unveiled their inaugural 'Hall of Fame' to honour past champions of both Ladies and Men’s Bowling Sections. The club was officially opened in 1952 and in that period of time has produced some outstanding bowlers. A total of 16 past and current bowlers, 8 ladies and 8 men were inducted into the 'Hall of Fame' at a function in front of a crowd of 200 guests and family members. One of the more prominent inductees is legendary bowler, Ron Taylor, who is highly decorated and won the first 'Jack Hi' event held in Australia in 1981. This is the first 'Hall of Fame' for any sporting club in the Mandurah district and will be added to when the occasion arises. Congratulations to all inducted and thank you to those who attended a memorable evening.

A charity competition for Pennant winners . . .

Dudley Park host the inaugural Pennant Best in the West On the weekend of the 26th and 27th September, the Dudley Park Bowling Club hosted a new and exciting event on the Bowling calendar. The Best Premier in The West concept was to bring together winners of their own leagues First Division pennant competition for 2017 and compete for the mantle of The Best Premier in The West. The event was run as a fundraiser for The Beyond Blue foundation with $3,300 raised for the charity. Selector Roger Barns felt the event was a perfect chance for the recently announced State Men’s Over 60’s team to get together and have a great hit out before they leave for South Australia in October. Roger gave a passionate speech about the Beyond Blue cause and promised to assist in enhancing the fund raising efforts in future. The country teams appreciated the opportunity to challenge themselves against some of the best and all went away vowing to try and win their league again in 2018 so as to receive an invite. Dudley Park has vowed to make the event an integral part of the bowling calendar and will attempt to grow the field in 2018 to 16 league pennant winners making it a true Champion of Champion’s Pennant winner. 27
