Country clubs featured Welcome to another edition of Jack Hi. Country bowlers have been to the fore in the recent state championships. Congratulations to York’s Nathan and Aaron Smith on winning the Pairs (page 20) and Wagin’s Warren Holt winning the coveted Men’s Singles (page 13). A full coverage of the State Singles, Pairs and Fours along with Over 60’s Pairs and Triples is included in this edition. Sticking with the country we have some news from the South East with reports from Ravensthorpe (page 24) and Hopetoun (page 26 and 27) in this edition. It is great to be able to feature news from a couple of smaller country clubs and as always I welcome reports from all clubs within Western Australia. Until next edition good luck to all bowlers especially those who will represent their clubs in Pennant finals over the next few months.

New season promises exciting matches As we welcome 2018, may I take this opportunity to wish everyone a happy, safe and prosperous New Year. With the pennant season in full swing once again, we look forward to more exciting matches leading up to finals in March.
New initiatives In retrospect, the association progressed in many ways in 2017. Despite the disappointing defeat of the proposed pennant format at the July AGM, new initiatives were introduced: • The 5 year Strategic Plan was completed • The Club Resource Guide was made available to clubs • The “Gotta Love the Bowlo” campaign was launched • A State Bowling Arm side represented the State for the first time • The Top Club Plan was embraced by participating metropolitan clubs and will roll out to some country leagues in the coming months • The Association moved to greater use of social media to promote the game, with live streaming a part of the communications strategy. Also the budget result came in as a positive, and there was an increase in active membership registered on Bowls Connect. Bowls WA will continue to support the clubs as best we can to ensure a bright future for the game.
Review of League Boundaries
New committee to review Affiliation Fees A special committee has been formed to review the base fee of the Club Affiliation Fee as per the Constitutional requirements passed at the 2016 AGM. The committee which includes two members of the BWA Finance committee plus four members of affiliated clubs (to include metropolitan and country) will be required to receive submissions from clubs so as to reach an equitable system for the individual member, club and Association.
Congratulations Kristina Congratulations to Kristina Kristic who has been selected to represent Australia at the forthcoming Youth Games to be held in Queensland in February.
Ross Warburton (Country Director) and I travelled to Carnamah in November to meet with representatives of the leagues of the Northern Zone. The meeting was held to discuss a review of the league boundaries. While discussion centred on the Moore League, it was unanimously agreed that the leagues would participate in the Top Club program to facilitate future planning requirements. A review of both the Northern and Eastern Zones will be undertaken prior to the end of the 2017/18 season.
'Gotta Love the Bowlo' to be ramped up The 'Gotta Love the Bowlo' campaign will be ramped up with television advertisements now on prime time television, both in the metropolitan area and country regions. It has been encouraging to receive favourable reports on the campaign from the membership, and to see the jingle and video shown at numerous clubs around the State. Together with Bowls Australia who is hoping to introduce a National Bowls Week, we look forward to clubs attracting new members.

Gotta love the Bowlo in full swing At the time of writing we have unfortunately had our first General Abandonment of the season with ladies Tuesday pennant called off – not for the expected mid January heat, but for 100mm of rain making any form of green preparation impossible – quite an extraordinary 24 hours. In full swing however is the Gotta love the Bowlo campaign, with television advertising both in the country and metro areas hitting the airwaves. The campaign will continue through to the end of March at which time the Club Development committee will assess the overall impact and prepare a report to the Board. Clubs have an important role to play in this, by feeding back to the office both positive and negative comment, which will aid in further decision-making. This has been a very significant investment by Bowls WA into building the sustainability of clubs and for it to continue in the months ahead, we will require specific feedback. All clubs have been issued attendance sheets for completion and return each month; please do so – even if it is a nil return. Additionally please display the bumper stickers on your car and utilise the posters and DL mail outs, they have been provided to assist your club to generate business, so please use them.

(Lancelin) and myself invite club’s to forward submissions on the current fee and any changes they would like to see for the 2019/20 financial year. This is a very important project and club’s must be proactive if they wish to see the current system changed during this review period. All submissions will be presented to the committee for a full investigation.
Affiliation Fee Review
Sheridan’s Country Week kicks off
The Club Affiliation Fee which has replaced individual member Capitation remains misunderstood by many, usually caused by a lack of information being passed on to new committees from old. By contributing to Bowls WA as an affiliated club you will contribute to the long term future of your club, association and sport. It will also allow your organisation to enjoy a range of different initiatives offered by Bowls WA and Bowls Australia. The initiatives which are offered are there to focus on attracting new members, keeping existing members, funding assistance to your club and club and player development. The fee for affiliated clubs includes membership services, club development and other services that only a state body can offer. In addition a small part of your club affiliation is passed onto World Bowls for the overall governance of the sport. The Board as promised at the 2016 AGM has formed a subcommittee to review the current Club Affiliation Fee system and report back for discussion at the 2018 AGM. The committee of Lisa Featherby (Director of Finance), Larry Bandy (Audit, Risk and Finance Committee) and club representatives Tony Churcher (Thornlie), Jeff Adams (Mosman Park), Russell Tyrell (Dudley Park), Norm Skoglund
Our biggest event of the year is fast approaching in the time honoured Men’s and Women’s Sheridan’s Badges Country Week. This is a great opportunity for old friends and adversaries to catch up at one of the hosting metro clubs. As clubs know sponsors are hard to find in today’s corporate environment and we thank Sheridan’s Badges for their fantastic support. I trust all clubs are able to utilise Sheridan’s for their badges and trophy needs – support them and I have no doubt they will continue to support you.

Upcoming Inclusion Events
State All Ability Championships The 2018 State Championships, renamed this year from 'Multi-Disability' to 'All Ability' will run over the weekend of April 7th and 8th at Kardinya Bowling Club. Player participation is expected to expand with Bowling Arm players vying for a spot in the Representative State 'Sandgropers' Side to attend the National Bowling Arm Challenge at East Maitland Bowling Club (NSW) in September. The Physical Players will also be vying for a Representative State 'Wasps' Side position in the National Multibowl Championships running in May. Armed and Physical players will compete in their own Category alongside those in the Deaf, Intellectual and Vision Categories. Competitors will play a combination of Pairs and Singles throughout the weekend. All players are encouraged to participate – it is NOT a requirement of this Championship to be a member of a Bowling Club; however, if you are seeding for the Bowling Arm or Physical Representative Sides then it IS a requirement.
National Multibowl Championships Every year Disability Sport Australia, in conjunction with a Host State, offer the National Multibowl Championship – a competition where Bowlers with a Physical Disability compete against each other in Singles, Pairs and Triples. All Players have to hold a Classification of B5, B6, B7, or B8 which can be assessed on the practice day prior to the initiation of each Championship Event. Bowls WA is proud to be the 2018 Host of the National Multibowl Championships which will be held at Kardinya Bowling Club from Sunday 20th to Friday 25th May (practice on Saturday 19th). All WA players with a Physical Disability who wish to be part of the Representative State Side for this event MUST participate in the April State All Ability Championships as this is part of the seeding process. State Teams are allowed to consist of up to 6 men and 4 women to form a Side of 10. Do you know a bowler with a physical disability? Let them know about this opportunity and keep your eyes posted for the forthcoming flyer to hang on your club notice board! 6
BowlAbility endures and diversifies Bowls WA BowlAbility Program has celebrated SIX YEARS RUNNING! Established in October 2011 this program quickly established itself as unique in the sport industry for longevity and quality of volunteers. BowlAbility offers a place to find friends; practice skills on the green; learn the game of bowls; and many new players to the sport try bowling from wheelchairs and walkers before joining their local club…the list goes on! Without volunteers Bowls WA would not be able to run programs, pennants, or State and Community events. In recognition of the support they provide to the BowlAbility Program two of our long-serving volunteers, Eric Payne and John Smith – both members of Kardinya Bowling Club, were recognized for their Service to Sport with a Certificate of Recognition from the Honourable Mick Murray MLA, Minister for Seniors and Ageing, Volunteering and Sport and Recreation. 2018’s BowlAbility Program starts on Friday 2nd February from 11.00am to 1.00pm at Kardinya Bowling Club located at Morris Buzacott Reserve in Kardinya. The program runs evening Friday except during school holidays.

From the Umpires
MICHAEL GOBLE-GARRATT
Leaving the green and game stoppages Rules! Laws! – what rules? Why Laws? Which ones do we select and which ones do we ignore? Do we need them? Given that most bowls players have come to this game from others sports, is it a time for them to forget that their previous sports had strict rules and relax and play as they wish? Of course the answer to the latter question is a resounding 'no'. Bowls is a Sport with Laws and Rules which apply to all in every situation without bias (no pun intended) at all times. Whether you play at the highest performance levels or in the lowest divisions, these rules are there to be adhered to resulting in fair play and the total enjoyment of all participants. Some instances that illustrate the reasons for having the Laws and Rules we have, have occurred this pennant season, and which rules really need to be understood by all players and especially Officials (Umpires, Measurers and Markers). At least for those involved in resolving issues, they MUST have access to, and know where to look up, the various Laws, Rules and Policies that would assist and confirm the appropriate decision/s. To this end, all Clubs must retain a copy of the current Laws of the Sport of Bowls Crystal Mark third Edition and a copy of the relevant Conditions of Play (CoPs)in the Club Umpires equipment. For those who don't know it, the annual Bowls WA Fixtures Handbook contain all the relevant CoP for Men and Women's Pennants in the Metro area and the annual Officials Handbook contains the general CoP for all State events held under the auspices of BWA. The Officials Handbook is distributed in limited quantities to all WA Clubs and both these annual publications are also kept up to date each season in downloadable PDF form on the BWA website.
'Declaring the head' There is no such clause in the Laws – Law C.7 End: delivery of the jack, delivery of all the bowls required to be played by all of the opponents in the same direction on a rink, and deciding the number of shots scored. So as mentioned in Jack Hi, Winter 2017 edition, if the members at the head agree (decide) the score and both indicate it and the score is written down and bowls moved, that is the end. Player injured during 'trial ends' – a player injured or feeling less than capable to play in the position they originally intended, but wish to continue in the team, they are allowed to change position, even after the trial end/s, under Law 11.2.3 The positions of players within a team must not be changed after the first end has been completed unless the change is necessary because a substitute is introduced as described in law 33. Naturally, trial ends do not constitute the 'first end'.
8
Individual Abandonment, Delayed or Interrupted Games Bowls WA has in its General CoP for pennants, certain criteria for the abandonment or delaying play under adverse weather conditions. So if the Umpire-of-the-day deems that play should be suspended due to rain, for a short period until it passes (taking into account all factors affecting all players at the venue), and calls everybody off – then Law 32 in its entirety applies. Those ends that are in progress, but all the required bowls in play have not been played at time of call off, those ends must be declared dead and replayed upon resumption. If the last bowl has been played, the number of shots scored must be decided before that game stops. Of more concern though, is the situation where the Umpireof-the-day is intimidated by those wishing to continue play before leaving the green as instructed by the Umpire, and in one specific instance totally defying the Umpire's legitimate call. Such behaviour could incur severe penalties, even to the extent of being declared as Defaulting player/s and potentially Forfeiting the game, which means the whole side forfeiting! Of course a playing Umpire-of-the-day must also don their 'Umpires' mantle and not be influenced by the state of the game when deciding such call-offs.
A FAQ If the last to play has not delivered their bowl and the thirds commence the measure to decide the score, can the head be restored and the player complete their play? NO – Law 29.4.1 If the result of an end has been agreed or the process of deciding the number of shots scored has started (as described in law 23.1), a player who has failed to play a bowl (either deliberately or accidentally) will lose the right to play the bowl. However, if the opposition third commences to 'move' bowls without the agreement of the third of the team on the mat, then that third (as the delegated measurer for that team) has the right to replace the moved bowl to its original position as a 'bowl displaced by a player' under Law 37.1.4 Displacement of a bowl at rest – 37.1.4.1 If a bowl at rest or a toucher in the ditch is displaced by a player and it has not disturbed the head after it is displaced, the opposing skip must put the bowl back to its former position.

From the Country Director • The Smith family from York celebrate a State Pairs title.
Ross Warburton
Congratulations to IZRR selections I hope everyone had a Merry Christmas and I would like to take this opportunity to wish you all a Happy New Year and a successful bowls season. All Leagues have held their ILRR’s and I take this opportunity to congratulate all those players selected for the IZRR’s. I will be attending the Men’s IZRR at Dalwallinu and Kerry Andersen will be attending the Ladies IZRR at Jurien Bay. Congratulations to Aaron and Nathan Smith for their win in the state pairs held in December. They are one of the youngest pair to win the event by beating last years winners. The Everest held at Dudley Park in October was a great success. Country players performed very well with Mark Simpson from Dudley Park and Warren Holt from Wagin making the semi finals. I would like to congratulate Russell Tyrrell and all his helpers for a very well run competition. I attended the Northern Zone boundary discussions along with BWA President Kerry Andersen, on the 4th December. A minutes silence was held before the meeting in memory of Barrye Thompson, President of the Northern Zone, who passed away suddenly a few weeks prior to the meeting.
Barrie was the main instigator in having this meeting and he will be sadly missed. The consensus from this meeting was that all League boundaries stay as they are. Kerry Andersen, chair of the review committee, will assess all submissions and a decision will be made by the end of March. To all those men and women who have nominated for Country Week, I wish them an enjoyable week of bowls and fellowship. I take this opportunity to thank all those Metropolitan clubs that offered to host the country week event. Country Coaching Enhancement Scheme will be offered again this year. Nominations are to be received by the end of April. If you are interested, could you please submit your nominations through your League or Zone representatives. I stress, if you are at all interested, please nominate early as we are finding it hard to contact players in the winter break. Last year it was held in September, which seemed to be popular with players, so this year will be the same. Once again, the pennant season is coming to a close. The Clubs who have qualified, I wish them a great final series and good bowling for the rest of the season.

Bowls WA partners Legacy WA As was successfully introduced last season, Bowls WA has again partnered with Legacy WA to assist in raising funds for this very worthy cause. Legacy is a charity providing services to Australian families suffering after the injury or death of a spouse or parent, during or after their defence force service. Legacy currently cares for around 65,000 widow(er)s and 1,800 children and disabled dependants throughout Australia, many of course who have been involved in the sport of bowls. Bowls WA encourages clubs to support Legacy Bowls Week (5th – 10th March). We ask clubs to prominently display the Legacy Collection tins which will be provided shortly at the club during the week. Many thanks to clubs and their members for your assistance in this worthy cause.

LEGAL
CORNER Friedman Lurie Singh & D’Angelo
Friedman Lurie Singh & D'Angelo YOUR SMART LAWYERS
This article is for general information purposes only and should in no way be construed as a substitute for independent legal advice. Should you have any queries about this article or require any legal advice please do not hesitate to contact us at FLSD.
Make sure your children are taken care of if the worst were to happen When you are a parent, it’s important to make sure that your children will be taken care of if something were to happen to you. While this probably isn’t something you want to dwell on, you should make a will and nominate a guardian for any children under 18 years. If you don’t appoint a guardian, anybody with 'sufficient interest' could apply to the Family Court for a parenting order.
What is a will? A will is a legal document that specifies who will inherit your property, investments, real estate and superannuation after you pass away. You can leave everything you own to one person, or you can leave certain things to different people. Your will can also specify who should care for your children if anything happens to you. This person is known as the 'guardian' and they will become legally responsible for a child if both the child’s parents have passed away. A guardian can also manage your children’s inheritance until they reached adulthood (i.e. 18 years old). It’s important to specify this in your will, because if you don’t nominate a person to manage your children’s inheritance, a court-appointed administrator will do it – and they might not necessarily do it in a way you would like. If you have particular wishes about your children’s upbringing (for example, their education or religious upbringing) you can also write a letter explaining your wishes and file it with your will.
How to choose a guardian Choosing someone to care for your children can be a daunting task, so it might be useful to make a list of the qualities you would like in a guardian. Think about what kind of moral values you would like them to have, whether they are religious, where they live, and if they would be physically and financially capable of caring for your children. Once you’ve done your list of qualities, write a list of people who you think fit these qualities. Consider whether you trust the person to raise your children the way you would see fit. Often the best person will be somebody who already has a relationship with your children – for example, a godparent, aunt or uncle.
Ask permission from the guardian Once you have chosen someone who you trust to take proper care of your children, you should sit down with them and ask whether they would accept guardianship if something were to happen to you. It isn’t a light decision, so they will need to be fully informed before they make up their mind. If the worst were to happen and they become your children’s guardian, they will have all the rights and responsibilities that a parent would have. They will be responsible for the day-to-day care of your children, plus they will have the ability to make decisions about your children’s welfare and development as well as their education and religious upbringing. BowlsWA • Jack Hi • Spring 2017
Making it legal Once you have chosen someone to be a nominated guardian for your children, and the guardian has accepted, you’ll need to file the proper legal documents to make it official. You can draw up your own will with a DIY kit, but it’s advisable to consult a lawyer if you want to make sure everything is done properly. Not only will a lawyer ensure your will is drawn up and filed correctly, they will also be able to discuss any questions you have.

Women’s State Singles
Krstic wins her second Singles title Kristina Krstic is a two time State Singles champion following her victory in the final at her home club of Manning on Monday. Krstic was dominant throughout most of the tournament culminating in a quality performance to defeat Irene Arndt of Safety Bay 25-16. Arndt started the better of the two players finding success on a tight narrow hand to win eight of the first eleven ends. However when Krstic got her first bowl close she capitalised scoring a couple of threes and a two to only trail 13-8. A switch to the narrow hand brought about some better form as Krstic controlled the second half of the game. Both players continued to draw well for the remainder of the match but Krstic’s increased consistency combined with the added weapon of her hitting ability gave her the edge. After the initial deficit Krstic outscored Arndt 17-3 to finish as the winner to a score of 25-16. It capped off a strong tournament in which she was only pushed by Noelene Abe and Arndt despite playing other winners of state titles. Arndt also had an impressive run defeating last years Champion of Champions runner up Lea Mias and four time winner Therese Hastings on her road to the final. Its part of an extremely strong twelve months for Arndt, particularly in singles having won the Over 60s singles last year and earning an equal third at the Champion of Champions last year. Krstic who is Western Australia’s only national representative will be back playing for Australia at the Under 25 Youth World Championships at Broadbeach Bowling Club on the Gold Coast February 24th to March 2nd. She has already had a brilliant season being runner up in the State Pairs and winning the Master Pairs with teammate Laura Merz.

Men’s State Singles
Holt hits hot form in Singles win Warren Holt is the first country bowler in over three decades to be State Singles champion claiming his maiden state title at Manning on Monday January 29th. His 25-21 victory over Mitch Cranswick made the Wagin product his clubs first ever winner and the first country player since Bunbury’s Bill Upton in 1987 to win the event. It would have been history either way with Cranswick being the first finalist from Claremont since 1939 and the first winner for the club since 1920. Cranswick was unheralded coming into the event having only played a handful of Premier League games for his previous club Doubleview. Holt was very impressive in his semi final against Peter Madigan winning 25-11 and would have been the favourite based both on previous results and the morning form, Cranswick just getting the better of Doubleview’s Charlie Slavich in a marathon 3 hour match 25-21. In the final Cranswick was the better starter though getting out to an 8-4 lead to start the game. He held that lead until Holt equalised at 11-11 and the lead went back and forth until a three gave Holt an 18-14 buffer. However seven shots in three ends by Cranswick, including the game’s only four, gave him back the lead and put him an end away from victory at 21-18. A three for Holt was important as he equalised straight away before digging deep to find a way to score four ones in row. Although slow it got him to the magical 25 and gave him his first title having made numerous semi-finals in country week and open events. It clearly meant a lot for Holt to have finally got over the line as he received his award in front of his supporters. “It’s just incredible to win this,” he said. “I’m humbled, I’ll cherish this for the rest of my life.”

Facebook The demise of the once popular ABC Lawn Bowls television broadcast in 2011 which started as Jack Hi and later Super Series Bowls after a thirty year coverage left a huge void for bowls enthusiasts. Bowls Australia in following years attempted to fill that void with the broadcast via Fox Sports (Foxtel Pay TV) of the popular Bowls Premier League and also the SBS Broadcast 'The Bowls Show', however it has also moved with the times and introduced live coverage through the internet, more specifically through the extremely popular social media site Facebook. All national events now have some form of live streaming included as coverage and this has proved extremely popular with those keen to follow the game. Nearly every State Association including Bowls WA has picked up the lead of the national body and begun to live stream state events. Whilst still a relatively new advancement the recently completed Bowls WA State Singles which was broadcast through only the use of a mobile phone saw nearly 8,000 people watch the coverage. This resulted in a reach of the coverage to over 100,000 people through Facebook which is great exposure for the sport. Bowls WA will continue to invest in technology to improve the coverage of its events with the upcoming Men’s Country week championships the next event to be broadcast. If you are keen to watch bowls then being on Facebook is now a must, not to mention all the news and information also available. State Four Championships
State Fours Champions crowned The Bowls WA State Fours champions have been decided with the finals taking place at Sorrento Bowling Club on Sunday afternoon 29th October 2017. In a first for bowls in WA the finals were also live streamed via the Bowls WA Facebook page. In the men’s event Daniel Brown (Kardinya) and Daniel Trewhella (Osborne Park) won yet another state championship together, joined by Kevin McKay (Armadale) and Shane Loftus (Sorrento). They survived a late scare to beat heavy underdogs Peter Wachmer, Matthew Ngui, Keith Bowden and John Chessell by a single shot 17-16. The Fremantle side who all play pennants in second division, which is the clubs highest team, almost pulling off a remarkable last end victory. Manning’s Helen Morss, Therese Hastings and Robyn O’Brien went back to back with new team member Laura Merz in the women’s competition, defeating Shaan Saunders, Amanda Masters, Brooke Newstead (all Osborne Park) and Kim Simms (Dudley Park) 24-6. After a come from behind victory in the semi-final Morss’ Manning side seemed determined to get off to a better start in the final as they shot to an early lead. Third Therese Hastings was dominant in the early part of the game before her teammates got in a similar rhythm to win the first 10 ends of the match. With a 19-0 lead the game as a contest was as good as over with Morss never looking like collapsing. A four to get off the mark for Saunders may have brought back some optimism but they were only allowed to win two more ends as Morss ran away to commanding 24-6 win. • Daniel Brown, Shane Loftus, Kevin McKay and Daniel Trewhella.

• Helen Morss, Therese Hastings, Laura Merz and Robyn O'Brien.
The men’s final held a lot more tension as any fears that the Freo boys may buckle under the pressure of a final were dispelled early. After five ends Wachmer’s side led their more fancied opponents 4-6 having just picked up a four. Brown immediately responded with eight shots in three ends as they threatened to blow the game apart. However, the Freo boys were able to limit the damage from there to mainly singles to hang in at 17-8 with five ends to play. Wachmer scored on the next four ends to have a sniff going into the last but an inability to pick up more than one in an end meant they still had work to do at 17-12 down. A positive start to the end set the scene with Fremantle holding four until Brown drew close enough to cut it down significantly. Instead of being able to draw for game Wachmer drove, getting the Brown bowl clean but still coming up agonisingly close to one of the greatest upsets in a West Australian state championship. Kevin McKay’s consistency at second was pivotal to the Brown sides’ success, particularly through the middle part of the game. The weekend saw yet more success for two great pairings. Brown and Trewhella combined for a state title for the seventh time while Morss and Hastings claimed their ninth championship together and their third out of four team events since the beginning of last season. Congratulations to the 2017-18 State Fours champions. BowlsWA • Jack Hi • Summer 2018
The Tour de Force Masters Pairs was opened by Carol Shaw at North Beach Bowling Club on Friday 12th January 2018.
Tour de Force Travel North Beach Masters Pairs There was a strong field of 40 teams including country teams from Beacon, Beverley, Dandaragan, Dudley Park, Meadow Springs, Moora, Northam, Safety Bay and Yunderup. The greens were running very well due to the hard work from Russell Quinlan (Greenkeeper) and Jim Powell (Greens Manager) at North Beach. Due to the large volume of teams, three games were played on Friday under blue skies. The following morning, Saturday, one game was played. Sunday began with the weather a little unknown because of the rain bearing depression coming down the WA coast. Luckily our finals were completed on the day and North Beach club President Mr Gerry McKenna was able to present the winners Laura Merz and Kristina Krstic with their trophies and prizemoney after an exciting game which went to an extra end after the scores were level at 16 all. Thankyou to sponsors Tour de Force Travel and congratulations once again to the finalists and winners. Vale Ros Slavich As in business there are many dynasties in sport and in our own game there are none better known or regarded as the Slavich/Katunarich family. Last month the bowling community lost Ros Slavich, a wonderful 'lady', tireless worker, organiser and in many ways modern day matriarch of the game in WA. Surely if statistics were kept on games attended, then Ros would have been untouchable, yet in all that time her willingness to welcome you with a smile and a chat never diminished, nor her passion through her support of husband Danny, and sons John and Charlie. Ros was a committed bowler and volunteer at Stirling Bowling Club. Many clubs and players paid tribute to Ros by leaving a chair out at pennants, wearing black arm bands or having flags at half mast. Her presence within the WA Bowling Community will surely be missed for a long time. To the extended family Bowls WA offers its sincere condolences on the passing of Ros – her contribution will not be forgotten. BowlsWA • Jack Hi • Summer 2018

Men’s O60s Pairs
Barry brilliance wins pairs Some superb bowls by Jim Barry (Cambridge) and the support of his lead Bruce Eagles (Sorrento) saw new champions crowned at the Men’s Over 60’s State Pairs finals played at Doubleview Bowling Club in November 2017. Barry and Eagles were looking like the team to beat after they cruised through sectional play at Manning on Monday and then were again outstanding in knockout rounds at Osborne Park on Tuesday before two more great wins at Doubleview. They over powered the Leeming pair of Tim Mathein and Garry Simms 20-7 in the semi final before again proving too strong in the final winning 20-11. Their finals opponents were the Wanneroo team of Ken Boswell and Laurie Johnson who had been impressive defeating a number of good teams including previous Over 60’s champions Frank Carbone and Glyn Vaughan in the semi final 20-17. The final looked like going to the wire as the scores were tied on several occasions up to the tenth end where it was 9-9. Laurie Johnson was • Jim Barry and Bruce Eagles. playing a great game to have Barry and Eagles under pressure on a number of ends however Barry was also playing well to keep his team right in it. The turning point came on the 11th end when Boswell jarred a toucher from Eagles to shift the jack for a couple of shots. Boswell was able to add some counters whilst Barry was trying to save the situation. Four down Barry with last bowl in hand played a bomb to trail jack for two shots – this was to be the start of a purple patch for Barry who was on fire over the next few ends. On the twelfth end when one down he again trailed the jack, this time for three which Boswell cut back with his last to one, before the Barry brilliance was back again on the next end. This time when one down he trailed the jack to team mate Eagles waiting bowls and added a counter to be holding four. Boswell played a good shot with his last but snuck through the cluster of bowls and just missed the jack. Another two on the next end meant the game was all but over at 9-18. Boswell and Johnson played well but just couldn’t match the great play from Barry and Eagles who were worthy champions in the end 20-11.

Women’s O60s Pairs
Amazing Andersen
• Linda Warburton and Kerry Andersen.
Mosman Park’s Kerry Andersen and Linda Warburton are the 2017 State Over 60’s Women’s Pairs champions. The defeated Noelene Abe (Corrigin) and Wendy Stower (Mosman Park) 16-10 in the final at Manning Bowling Club on Friday November 17th, 2017. This title is remarkably the eighth Over 60’s title for Andersen and she is the only player male or female to win all four over 60’s state events – singles, pairs, triples and mixed pairs. In fact she has won them all twice!! Andersen and Warburton’s successful campaign endured a difficult start as they squeezed through their section with three consecutive wins decided on the last end. The second day was more comfortable before a great performance on the final day saw them win the tournament. The formidable pair of Kathy Gobbart and Julie Savell fell by the wayside as they were dispatched 22-8 putting the Mossy girls into a final against defending champions Abe and Stower. Warburton had the better of the battle up front giving Andersen more to work with as both skippers played well. A three on the 10th end gave Andersen an 11-4 lead and it always looked tough for Abe to get back into it. Consistency from Andersen and Warburton meant that Abe and Stower could only manage singles until they picked up a two on the penultimate end. This kept them in the game but 14-10 behind they needed a four just to get an extra end. As it turned out Abe had a shot to play to hold game with her last, needing to remove two bowls to potentially make five. Alas her shot was wide as Andersen and Warburton claimed a 16-10 victory. Men’s O60s State Triples
Caffell wins it with his last Gary Caffell, Pat Caffell and Alan Pryce are this season’s State Over 60’s Triples champions after a thrilling finish to the championships. They won the final over the Sorrento side of Chris Lander, Bruce Eagles and Brian Clausen at the Caffells’ home club of Osborne Park, Wednesday 6th December 2017.. It was a quality final despite blustery conditions making it tough for players to be consistent. There was an adjustment period during the first few ends of the game as the players came to terms with the wind picking up but afterward the quality of the match couldn’t be faulted. After the first four ends the scores we’re locked at 2-2 thanks to Chris Lander who twice killed the fourth end, once when down five. That tightness continued for the first half the game, Bruce Eagles’ consistency in difficult conditions a standout and ensuring Lander always had something to work with. Caffell held a 6-4 lead at the halfway but played good shots to take advantage of less tight head to pick up five on the tenth. It gave his side an 11-4 lead, the biggest at any point in the game. It would prove to be important as Sorrento kept chipping away at the lead winning five of the next six ends. Four consecutive singles had Caffell still in front 12-11 going into the last end.
• Alan Pryce, Gary Caffell and Pat Caffell
Leader Clausen started the side off well and his team followed. Despite two great efforts from Pat Caffell Lander crossed over with two shots to hold game. He drew another with his last forcing Caffell into some tough decisions down to two bowls just behind the jack and one in front. He chose to go big at the head and got the front shot onto the two back shots to clean out all three and end up with shot. The 13-11 score line was by far Caffell’s closest game for the tournament with only one other match having been decided by single digits.
Women’s O60s State Triples
Consistency – Abe, Matthews and Hogg Noelene Abe, Liz Matthews and Sue Hogg have won the State Over 60 Women’s Triples final played at Osborne Park. They defeated Dudley Park’s Irene Grout, Tanya Groves and Beryl Gobbart 16-13. It was a strong first half for Grout as her side won six of the opening nine ends to lead 9-5. Lead Beryl Gobbart was often first to the jack making life difficult for Abe’s side. The 10th end changed the game however with Abe playing a beautiful bowl to sit a bowl for three shots. All of a sudden they were only a shot behind and they made the most of their opportunity by taking the lead for the first time with two on the next end. Matthews started to work her way into the game with a strong second half and Hogg was always around the place to give Abe plenty to work with. It took a fantastic bowl by Grout to retake the lead as she landed a bowl for shot three down on 15th. It was only a 1213 lead though and it was the last end the Dudley Park girls would win as Abe’s side scored four shots across a tense last three ends to win 16-13. It was a reversal of the first half as Abe’s side won six of the last nine ends. The difference was consistency which allowed them to get more out of their half than Grout’s side.It was the second time the two teams had met in as many years with Abe defeating Grout in the first sectional game last year. BowlsWA • Jack Hi • Summer 2018
• Noeline Abe, Liz Matthews and Sue Hogg.
It’s a first Over 60’s title for both Matthews and Hogg but not their first win together. The pair won the open triples event in the 2016/17 season. It’s a second title for Abe and her second final of the season having made the pairs final with Wendy Stower in November. This would make her the current favourite for Over 60’s Female Bowler of the Year with two events left to be played.

Men’s State Pairs
First title for the Smith brothers Brothers Aaron (York) and Nathan Smith (Bassendean) caused a major upset when they took out the 2017-18 Bowls WA Men’s State Pairs championship winning the final at Doubleview Bowling Club on Friday December 29th. They combined as one of the youngest pairings to have claimed the title being just 22 and 26 years old respectively and in doing so showed nerves of steel winning all their knock out matches by less than three shots. They defeated defending champions Shane Knott and Anthony Williams (Manning) who endured a tough run throughout their campaign to make the final. It was a high quality final in difficult conditions with a blustering wind around for most of the game that went right down to the last bowl of an extra end. The match didn’t start well for the Smith’s as they trailed early after dropping a five on the second end but took the lead via a false shot from Knott a few ends later. Trying to remove a bowl to make a number he narrowly missed and back cut the jack to drop three shots. This gave the Smith’s the momentum which they used to go on an unanswered run to build a 15-5 lead at the halfway point of the 18 end fixture. The Manning boys began to rally, Knott in particular starting to draw very well as they stormed back to put the brothers under pressure. As a consequence the Smith boys went away from the game style that built them their lead and began to use more weight than they had been. In the ends 10-17 Smith was outscored 1-14 to be behind by three shots going into the last end. Holding two Aaron Smith played his final bowl looking to remove an opposition bowl and stay for four and the win, on target he managed to clip half the bowl turning it out but causing his bowl to run out of the head for just three. The draw meant an extra end which Williams started well with two good shots. Knott trailed the jack with his second, keeping shot but putting the jack into a dangerous area. By Aaron Smith’s last bowl he had two seconds and a two bowl wide target. Playing a runner he looked close to pick up the jack but a collision with one of his second shots caused him to get out the shot bowl to hold game. Knott had a chance to run the now shot bowl out of the head but missed tight, giving the Smiths the title. The win is the first open division title for either of the brothers and adds to the honours they gained in Under 18 competition. They were warmly congratulated by family and friends present.

Women’s State Pairs
Mosman Park take Pairs title Bev Baker and Susan Delaporte were crowned 2017/18 Women’s State Pairs Champions following their victory in the final on Friday December 15th 2017. The Mosman Park team defeated Manning’s Kristina Krstic and Laura Merz 24-11 in blustery conditions at Doubleview Bowling Club. It is the second year in a row that Krstic and Merz have finished runners up. The result was a minor upset based on form with only defending champions Helen Morss and Therese Hastings finishing with a single digit margin against Krstic and Merz who had been in outstanding form until the final. In contrast Baker and Delaporte lost a game in their section to former runners-up Angela Gunson and Cathy Taylor before beginning their winning run. With consistency hard to come by due to a strong breeze it was only Delaporte would draw close with regularity in the early part of the game. She continued her form throughout the game to have the better of the leader’s battle and be the best player on the green. It was a five end stretch in the middle of the game that gave the Mosman Park ladies a commanding advantage and turned the game in their favour. Consistent draw bowls from Delaporte and able support from Baker saw them score ten shots between ends six and ten to lead the game 16-6.
• Bev Baker and Susan Delaporte.
By contrast Krstic and Merz were forced into runners to change the head or pressure draws making it difficult to settle into a rhythm. Their performance picked up in the second half but risky shots to get back in the game back fired with Krstic getting bad results from a couple of good bowls. A three followed by a four on the 13th and 14th ends to Baker put the game virtually beyond all doubt with Krstic need to overcome a 23-9 deficit in just four ends. More consistent play from Baker and Delaporte ensured that was never a likely scenario and the match ended an end early at 24-11. Delaporte and an emotional Baker accepted the trophy from President Kerry Andersen during presentations. The title is a first for Delaporte and is Baker’s first win since her State Singles triumph in 2012. • Kristina Krstic urges a bowl along in the final.
• Sue Delaporte was in great form in the final.

Shane Smith leading the
With Australia on the cusp of an exciting Commonwealth Games campaign on the Gold Coast in April, the sport of bowls is set for a monumental year in 2018. One of many people at grassroots level helping lead that charge is Shane Smith of the Quinns Rocks Bowling Club. Shane arrived at the club around three years ago via corporate bowls and has become an increasingly passionate member at the club, which is known for its great social culture as part of the wider Quinns Rocks Sports Club. Regional Bowls Manager for Western Australia (North/ East) Clive Adams sat down with Shane to discuss his bowls journey and contribution in bringing new generations of bowlers through the ranks. Clive Adams: How did you get into bowls? Shane Smith: My first experience of playing bowls was in a corporate bowls competition at Quinns. We had a group of six of us that rotated through a full season, which covered if someone wanted to sit out or simply wasn’t available. My mother-in-law played bowls, so I knew a bit about it, but hadn’t considered that it was for me until that corporate season. After that, I was hooked. CA: Did you play other sports? SS: Certainly. I played Aussies Rules for West Perth Colts and then Amateurs and I also played a bit of cricket. MotoX was another one – I think I was perhaps the oldest MotoX racer in WA - they called me the 'Senior Cruiser.' The fact is though, the competitive spirit has always been there and it’s bowls that is now the focus.
22
CA: What were your thoughts on Pennant Bowls? SS: I always thought that I wasn’t good enough to play the more competitive levels of bowls. I was nervous enough playing socially at the club, scared I would do something wrong and upset someone. For six months, I just played socially before I was reassured by other members of the club that I would be fine playing pennant, and so I had a go. I was a bit nervous but I settled in quickly and I haven’t looked back. I love the team game appeal of bowls but I also love the variety of formats available – from the beginner, social type formats, to the more serious competitive side – I love it all. CA: How did your first year go? SS: Well things went quite well. I won the club novice singles and went on to finish runner-up in the state novice Champion of Champions, plus I also won the club triples and pairs, and finished runner-up in the fours. I’m gradually making my way through the ranks, having played a bit of top division bowls last year, and I’m still striving to improve my game and learning all the time. CA: Tell us about Jack Attack and your involvement. SS: I’ve been working with John Dilley and the team on our Jack Attack program. We’ve had corporate bowls for a few years but we decided to try the new Jack Attack format, and honestly the club has truly embraced the concept. BowlsWA • Jack Hi • Summer 2018
charge at Quinns Rocks We started by encouraging members to bring along family and friends on a Friday night, have a game of bowls, a meal afterwards and just generally have a good time. We play music while everyone is playing and I grab the mic, get around and chat to everyone while they play. The players love it. We still maintain our corporate bowls crowd on Thursdays but Jack Attack has given us something different for Friday nights at the club. Numbers continue to grow which is a great sign that everyone is having a good time. CA: What about juniors? SS: This is an area that I am very passionate about. Young people should be out playing sport – not just bowls, every sport. I went to our members and encouraged them to get their kids and grandkids involved. I engaged our club coach, Don McKenzie, to be available on Saturday mornings and, honestly, I’ve been amazed at the skill level of the group we have been coaching. We have started with a small group, but already we have them involved in Jack Attack and in other social formats, especially throughout the school holidays.
Bowls Regional Manager (WA - North/East) Clive Adams Phone: 0408 136 831 Email: cadams@bowls.com.au
The kids are discovering the sport, having a great time and are asking more and more to be involved with bowls. We have had a visit from the state coach, Ken Perks, and I have been working closely with RBM Clive Adams and with Bowls WA who have loaned us some equipment to get us started. The next step will be getting involved with our local schools in the new year, through Sporting Schools funding available to primary schools across Australia. The club will have double figure entries for our novice singles event this year, which just shows the number of new bowlers that we are getting.
For more information on the social and junior formats of the game like Jack Attack and Jr. Jack Attack, or simply to discuss the future of your club, get in touch with your local Regional Bowls Manager.

Mundaring win A & M Williams Classic The A & M Williams classic played at Kukerin on the 24th and 25th of October 2017 played in almost perfect conditions over the two days was once again a huge success for the club. This popular event continues to attract capacity fields of bowlers from a large area of the South West of WA. Bowlers this year attended from, Albany, Emu Point, Safety Bay, Mundaring, Quairading, Moodiarrup, Kojonup/Mt Marker, Gnowangerup, Dumbleyung, Kulin, Karlgarin, Kondinin, Newdegate and Lake Grace. On day one the Gnowangerup team won all four games with a few other teams close behind. Day two saw a few changes in the rankings as the day wore on. Merv Cousins and team from Mundaring defeated the previously undefeated Arthur Crabbe’s team from Gnowangerup to take the lead, however there was more drama to follow with one game to be played. The final game saw both leading teams defeated however this still left the Mundaring team leading narrowly to claim the major share of prizemoney. Final placings were: First prize presented to M. Cousins, (skip) J. Lynch, (3rd) G. Waller, (2nd) G. Bear, (lead) with 6.5 wins and +46 shots, second prize to A.Crabbe, K.Heberle, R.Fleckner, M. Johnson with six wins +45 shots and third place to last years winners from Kulin, C. Bull,

Wonthella leading the next-gen of bowlers in Geraldton by Clive Adams – Regional Bowls Manager (WA – North/East)
Drive four hours north of Perth in Western Australia and you’ll arrive at the picturesque coastal town of Geraldton. With two clubs based there, the town has a great history in the sport of bowls exhibiting strong membership and proactivity. More recently, led by President Kevin Exten, the Wonthella Bowls Club launched a project to involve high schools in bowls programs at the club with great results. The initial program, which was seen as a pilot for the area, involved three schools in Strathalbyn Christian College, Nagle Catholic College and Geraldton Grammar School. Exten engaged the surrounding clubs, Geraldton Bowling Club and Mullewa Bowling Club, as well as Bowls Australia’s Regional Bowls Manager for the area Clive Adams, to develop a program which would, in the club president’s words, “find the next state bowls champion”. It was initially planned to have all the sessions at Wonthella, however with many sessions scheduled for similar times or to overlap, it was soon realised that one of the schools should head to the Geraldton Club instead for logistical purposes and to provide adequate green space. The co-operation of both clubs in this instance was crucial to the success of the program. “We are looking to engage with the local community to demonstrate what a great club we have, and what a great sport bowls can be for everyone,” said Exten. “Bowls offers great opportunities to younger people, but also for family involvement. It’s a fun, challenging sport that anyone can play, but that also teaches discipline and respect for others along the way." The program initially involved showing the students techniques to deliver the bowl, but quickly turned to scroungers (4,3,2,1 scoring) type formats and more recently into short pairs matches, involving the more traditional scoring methods. The club was able to use its Jr. Jack Attack equipment to set up mini-activities like Bowls Footy and so forth. BowlsWA • Jack Hi • Summer 2018
“During any sessions, it is very important to keep the students engaged,” said Adams. “The Club did a great job of this by varying games, and keeping the students challenged, either using different scoring formats, or playing target games that maintain focus.” As a thank you to the students for their involvement and to encourage them to return, Wonthella presented the students from Strathalbyn and Geraldton Grammar with complimentary memberships for the club while they remain a student. “We have certainly seen plenty of potential amongst the groups we have coached for the last six or seven weeks," said Exten. “Now we want them to keep coming back, bring their friends and families, and keep enjoying the sport we all love. “Our club members have been brilliant…Not only have they loaned us coloured bowls to use rather than tired old black ones, many of them have stepped out onto the green to assist with the sessions. It really has been fantastic, and I thank them all.” Adams praised the club for their membership initiative, which shapes as a crucial tool in a bid to lure the students back to the club and continuing with the sport. “The free membership offer is a fantastic initiative from the club,” he said. “Running school programs is a brilliant way to bring people into the sport, but encouraging ongoing club involvement is the next crucial step. Rather than waiting to see what happens from the program, the club is on the front foot showing that they want these great young people involved in the club.” As they approach the end of 2017, the club certainly has great plans for the future, and they now know they can run a successful program, providing enjoyment and involvement for all. For more information on school programs, or for anything else your club might like to get involved in, please contact your local BA Regional Bowls Manager. 25

Capel Bowling Club… striving for new members
Bring a neighbour, bring a friend was the name of the game at the Capel Bowls Club on Sunday, 5th November 2017 for the Guy Fawkes Day Any Combination Pairs. Over 60 players turned up, many who have never bowled before. A perfect day of sunshine and little wind. Players experienced the contrast of bowling on the new sand filled synthetic surface on ‘A' Green laid by Tiger Turf during the week and the 12 year old surface on 'B' green. Some natural, potential bowlers were evident from the nonbowling brigade. Major sponsors for the event included Connect Hearing of Busselton, Surgery 28 of Capel and Busselton and club members, Ray and Barb Gasmire. Ray Gasmire, Bob Hearn and new bowler Donna Krepp together with 'Rocket'. Rod Leach have been appointed to an Events Coordinating Committee to arrange special social bowling events at the Capel Bowling Club. To coincide with Bowls WA 'Gotta Love the Bowlo' TV commercial on GWN 7 network in the Country, Capel Bowl Club will run their locally produced 15 second 2016 TV commercial and a poster campaign which will be displayed by local businesses to attract new blood. Capel Bowls Club has a small, ever aging membership and their marketing campaign is hinged around attracting new and younger membership in an area where there is a change in demographics. 'The Guy Fawkes 'bring a non-bowler event' follows the Pacing versus Racing Bowls Challenge in September 2017. • For further information contact Steve O’Brien, Capel Bowls Club Inc. 28
