Jack Hi Editorial
Women's State Singles winner – Hailey Packer
with Aaron DELAPORTE Welcome to the 2022 Summer edition of Jack Hi. As usual there is plenty happening in the world of bowls on and off the green. It is always great to see good people in our sport recognized, in this edition we have three separate articles on those who have contributed to bowls being celebrated. Congrats to those who received Bowls WA Volunteer awards (page 12) along with Terry Conley Senior Citizen of the Year at City of Stirling (page 26) and Elaine McDonald with Life membership of the South West League (page 30). Speaking of good people Shane Knott’s effort to play bowls for 30 hours straight was truly remarkable and the amount he raised for charity was terrific, you can read all about that on Page 18. This edition also takes a look at the upcoming Bowls Premier League (page 16) whilst profiles on our Perth Suns players and coach are also in the magazine. Lastly amongst a stack of bowls results a special mention to two first time State Singles champions in David Downey (page 14) and cover girl Hailey Packer (page 15), I’m sure they were the toast of Manning Bowling Club following their victories. Until next edition - good bowling.

COVID and the remainder of the season We certainly live in challenging times in an ever changing world! COVID, Delta and now Omnicron and all its variations! The next few months will not only be a challenge for our sport but the community at large. We will all have to be very vigilant to minimize the chances of becoming infected. Having our vaccinations, adhering to social distancing requirements and personal hygiene will all assist us to reduce the effects of infection throughout the community. I commend our CEO Ken Pride and our Board for following the Governments guidelines to date. At some stage it was suggested that Bowls WA create their own guidelines but following expert health advice has been far more appropriate. That would have met with disaster as it has for Bowls SA. It is great to read, see and hear that all Clubs are going to put in procedures in compliance with Government requirements to ensure the future safety of all our members. I commend all Executive Committees and Boards. Two years ago we were in the main able to complete our season. It is worth noting that the Association has in place rules to cover such contingencies.
I am optimistic – with a degree of reservation – we can complete this season. Let us all be responsible citizens in the months ahead.
Governance Review Just to let you know the current Board is continuing with a total Governance review which was overdue. The Governance review will result in a re-write of our Constitution and By-Laws together with alterations to some Committee structures to make them more relevant to today’s society. There will be forums to explain a few major changes to the Constitution and obviously the chance to discuss and debate the changes. The Board is utilizing the recommendations of 1 A report prepared by Purpose Driven Performance 2 Sports Australia’s Governance rules, and 3 Recommendations of the Australian Institute of Company Directors for Non-profit organisations. The Board aim to have a new Constitution available for approval at our next AGM.
RBM for Clubs in Southern WA Following the retirement of Steven Unsworth Bowls Australia and Bowls WA are pleased to introduce Troy Kinnane as the new Regional Bowls Manager (RBM) for Southern WA. Troy has had a significant working history in the finance industry including running his own business and will bring a lifetime of experience into the role along with his clear passion to support clubs and the sport of bowls. "I have been involved in lawn bowls for over 15 years and truly love the sport and the club environment. The camaraderie that is shared from club to club, the friendships that are formed and the diverse range of people that play our great game is something special. I am grateful for the opportunity to work closely with the broader bowls community and look forward using the skills I have developed professionally over the last 30 years to assist in the continued development of lawn bowls in WA," said Troy. The role of an RBM is significant, specialising in assisting clubs to develop and remain healthy on and off the green.
4
The position provides clubs with an avenue to get face to face help across a number of areas particularly Club development including grants and sponsorship and through Bowls Australia programs such as Jack Attack, Rookie Rollers and Sporting Schools.
• Troy Kinnane.
They can also assist with Bowls Link, Membership and Officials (Coaches and Umpires) development. Bowls WA looks forward to seeing Troy out and about talking to clubs south of the river in Perth and across South West and Southern WA in the country. We encourage clubs to reach out to Troy in the near future should they require any assistance. You can contact Troy on 0418 890 680 or tkinnane@bowls.com.au

Clubs will need to adapt to changes The basic ground rules for operating our clubs as licensed venues have changed – perhaps forever. Committees and Members alike must accept these changes, whether they personally agree with them or not, and adapt the club’s operations accordingly. The requirement to ensure only vaccinated patrons enter the licensed premises is not a request it is a Government directive that must be adhered to. It is accepted that clubs are finding it difficult to find 'COVID marshals' to ensure compliance, but find them we must or alternatively alter the club’s operating hours to reflect the situation. The significant fines, notwithstanding the health risks for non-compliance demand as such and we must all adapt accordingly. It has been disappointing to field questions, mainly it must be said from individuals, on how they may be able to circumvent the Government instructions on requiring double vaccination to cross or enter licensed areas. Licensed areas are more than the insides of the clubhouse; they usually incorporate the surrounds of the green and particularly external social areas, so the belief that entry to the playing surface through some long disused back gate simply doesn’t stack up. Unfortunately for the time being at least, if you choose not to be fully vaccinated then the bowling club is out of bounds.
Singles winners tough it out In almost a last person standing event, congratulations to Hailey Packer and David Downey for their outstanding efforts in winning the Dyenamic Bowls Uniforms State Singles, together with runners up Lisa Featherby and Russell Bates. In oppressive conditions over the week, both players fought off outstanding opponents to claim our state’s blue riband event. With very strong numbers in both ladies and men’s events the winners deserve all the accolades bestowed upon them, as does the Bassendean Bowling Club for producing a near perfect surface for the finals to be played upon.
BowlsWA • Jack Hi • Summer 2022
Annual Country vs Metropolitan The annual Country vs Metropolitan fixture for the ladies will again be held on the afternoon of Sunday 20th March at the Manning Memorial Bowling Club. Reverting back to (48) players for each Side, the match will take on a more social occasion rather than the previous high performance trials. Preceding the afternoon match will see a trial game between a President’s XVI and the Ladies State Squad which will have an early bearing on the state side to compete in The Nationals on the Gold Coast in October (well at least we hope so!) The men will continue their traditional Country All Stars vs Metropolitan on the evening of Thursday 3rd March, leading into Country Week which gets underway the following morning around the hosting metropolitan clubs. With recently updated state squads both trial matches should provide some insight into the state selectors thinking for the national carnival.
BPL and BPL Cup issues continue Frustratingly our home grown talent continues to meet roadblocks in efforts to compete in the BPL for the Perth Suns and for our qualifiers in the BPL Cup. Once again changes are likely to be made for the BPL with NSW players ready to fill the void if once again travel restrictions prove too onerous to compete at the magnificent Moama Bowling Club in late February. For the BPL Cup our qualifiers from 2020 and 2021 still wait for their day in the sun, with all six teams confirming their unavailability to compete due to quarantine requirements upon return to WA. With the 2022 qualification series not far away, Bowls Australia are still considering what to do with the WA qualified sides, with a cash payout on the cards for 2020 and/or 2021 qualifiers – frustrating and disappointing for all that a great opportunity may be lost.

Mandurah BC increases Inclusive Programs Mandurah Bowling and Recreation Club in partnership with VisAbility, the City of Mandurah and the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries (DLGSC), is offering anyone living with vision impairment or blindness the opportunity to join likeminded people in an ongoing lawn bowls program spear-headed by club member Ian Foster. This South West Rollers (SWR) program will enable those living with vision impairment or blindness the opportunity to learn and participate in lawn bowls, which will provide them with the ability to enjoy a sport in a safe and social environment. They will be able to participate irrespective of their capability or experience, which also provides health benefits enabling participants to make new friends and reduce social isolation. The South West Rollers Open Day was enjoyed by representatives from the City of Mandurah and DLGSC (who tested bowling with a vision impairment courtesy of special goggles provided by VisAbility) and members of the Vision Impaired and Blind Bowlers WA (VIBBWA) who enjoyed a roll-
up on the beautiful indoor green and a tasty special tea was shared to end the event. SWR’s meet fortnightly on Fridays between 9:30 and 11:30 AM. For more information on SWR activities and dates please contact Brent or Jayne Parsons on 0498 508 644 or southwestrollers@gmail.com Armed Bowlers started 2022 out by playing at the ‘Mandurah Armed Open’ Tournament where 40 players, all using bowling arms, competed in three games of 12 ends. This was the third annual Armed Open. Skippers were chosen and Leads, Seconds, and Thirds drew pop-sticks to complete the random team assignment…and what a combination of teams there were! Thank you to Mandurah Bowling Club for hosting an excellent competition, particularly Bob and Erica Eayrs and Neil Richardson who coordinated and ran the event with efficiency, warm hospitality, and quality event ownership. We will look forward to the 2023!

From the Umpires
Peter BARNETT
The laws are not perfect… (but experience can close the gap)
Given that rules of a sport are written about the game as we know it and not how it might evolve in the future, situations will occur that are not covered by the rules. To quote The Laws of The Sport of Bowls: “If a situation arises that is not covered by these laws, players, markers and umpires must use their common sense and a spirit of fair play to decide on the appropriate course of action.” WOW! Common sense and fair play, aren’t they seen differently by different people? What can an umpire do they have to make a decision without possibly being criticised as unfair or lacking common sense. Well, there is some help available and there are things an umpire and bowlers can do in the event of uncharted umpiring situations. Firstly, in addition to the 'Laws' as written by World Bowls there are other rules that apply to our games. They are: • Bowls Australia Policies plus… • Bowls WA Field of Play rules in the Handbook plus • any Conditions of Play put in place by the 'Controlling Body'. For our convenience, if you buy a Law Book through Bowls WA, it contains both the Laws and in the appendix the Bowls Australia Policies. The Field of Play rules are in the Bowls WA Handbook as are the Conditions of Play for Bowls WA organized events. In addition for your club events, such as club championships there will be Conditions of Play, that should be available to all players and officials. Secondly, there is 'Bowls Etiquette'. The etiquette of Bowls is a combination of good manners, sportsmanship and sociability and are designed to promote the friendliness and sportsmanship of which the sport has rightly earned. Be conversant with the Laws of the Game, Etiquette and observe them. These are not firm rules to be enforced by Umpires but good ideas of how we should behave to make each game more enjoyable for all. While there is no one set of Bowls Etiquette and the total list is long, below is a selection you might adopt either as a player or as a club.
8
1.
Don’t drop bowls from the bank to the green, respect the surface of the green. 2. Keep quiet and still while players are on the mat. 3. Stand at least 1 metre behind the bowler on the mat. 4. Don’t prattle- watch all bowls and know their positions. Keep your mind on the game, be ready with your bowl in your hand when it’s your turn. 5. Don’t step onto the mat and indicate which way you want to play. Wait for the Skips instructions. 6. Don’t ear bash your opponent about your previous successes. 7. All at the head assist in kicking bowls. 8. Don’t complain about the skip’s bowls, they have only two bowls and the rest of you have had six. 9. Take an interest in the skip’s bowl when it is their turn. 10. Don’t query the skip’s instructions. 11. Acknowledge good shots from your opponents and thank them if they do the same to you. 12. Don’t applaud unlucky bowls, or urge their bowl through. 13. Don’t deliver your bowl until the previous bowl comes to rest. (Playing prematurely). 14. Walk close to the centre of the rink when crossing over and with a minimum of delay. 15. If you lose, be a good loser, don’t blame your loss on other people, the green, weather etc. Always thank your opponents for the game. Be a good winner. Don’t be too taken with your win because the position could be very well reversed tomorrow. 16. Offer your opponent a drink after the game; don’t forget the marker in singles. 17. Do not walk in front of the last third to bowl they have a right to see where their bowl finishes, and it is against the law. 18. Be punctual to commence play and be correctly attired 19. Laws of the game demand that you inform your opponent if you wish to leave the green. 20. Learn to be a good marker. Stand behind the head and to one side. Don’t sit on the bank or in the ditch. 21. Respect the position and decision of umpires. Above all enjoy the game for its pleasure and the lasting friendships it provides!

Life at bowling clubs now more complicated
WST RA I STON NO CK W O R S T
RI
D
Life at bowling clubs has become a little more complicated with the Government introducing the wearing of masks inside all licensed venues and proof of double vaccination by the 31st January. For avoidance of doubt, the licensed venue will include the clubhouse, playing surface(s) and surrounds, incorporating all areas within the club’s boundary if so stated by the clubs. Information can be sent out by office staff at Bowls WA if the need for guidance is required. This year’s major country events, the Men’s and Women’s Country Week and IZRR’s are still on course to be played. I ask all the players who will be competing in these events to respect the situation that we are in and to understand that club members who ask for verification will be doing it voluntarily. A very successful day was held at the Harvey Bowling Club on the 26th January. A 24 hour bowl off was held which started on the 25th January at 1.00pm and concluded on the 26th at 1.00pm to raise money to help Calvin Rodgers. Calvin who has only 10% sight has been selected to trial in the Para Squad for the Commonwealth Games to be held in Birmingham this year.
Calvin competed in the National Vision Impaired Championships held in the middle of 2021. He won Gold in the B2 Pairs with Michael Pullinger and Gold in the B2 Open Singles. He was named Male Bowler and Overall Bowler of the Series. He also won the WA Disability Sports Star of the Year in 2021. This year he competed in the State Singles for the first time and showed that he is a very capable bowler by winning his section and progressing to the last 16. The members of the Harvey Bowling Club need to be congratulated for their effort in organizing the event, running raffles and supplying meals and breakfast for the players who bowled for the twenty four hours. Calvin spoke afterwards and stressed that it wasn’t just for him but showed how volunteers can come together to achieve an outcome and thanked the Harvey Bowling Club for their generosity. I’m sure everyone would join me in wishing Calvin all the best for the future. The pennant season is coming to a close and I wish all the clubs that have qualified for the finals, a great final series.

WA State Squad
John Slavich calls retirement The Western Australian State Selection Panel have recently chosen the 2022 State Squads. The Women’s Squad is made up of 15 players with last year’s team of 12 players all accepting their spots back into the squad while past team members Linda Warburton and Denise Kelly have been added. Also coming into the squad is Perth and Tatts member Lisa Smith. Lisa has previously won a state fours and has been working hard in the Bowls WA Academy over the past six months under the coaching of Linda Warburton. Lisa is sure to put pressure on the more established stars in the squad. The Men’s State Squad has also been selected with 16 players being named with two of last year’s team of 12 players choosing not to continue. The heartbeat of many Western Australian campaigns, John Slavich has made the brave decision to not continue. Only Chevy can convey what playing for WA has meant to him. “It’s been an awesome ride and an honor to have represented Western Australia, but I have thought about this for a while, and I’m done. Thanks for everything and everyone who has helped me to be a better player and person. I may have not been the best player, but I always gave my best for WA.” While John will not be pushing for selection he has certainly not been lost to WA’s push for a National Title and has offered his services to play against the squad during the season. The second player who will not be pushing for selection this year is Glenn Pauling. Glenn was selected in the team for the first-time last year but is unable to commit to selection this year.
• John Slavich.
Glenn plans to spend a number of months visiting family and friends back in New Zealand while the selection process is taking place. We wish Glenn all the best and look forward to having him back in contention next season. Recent WA State Singles Champion David Downey was approached but unfortunately due to limited availability at this time he was unable to take up a position. Five players from last year’s squad have retained their position with Blake Butler, Jack East, Shane Knott, Shane Loftus and Scott Walker all pushing for selection. Also added to the squad for the first time is Doubleview’s Brad White. Brad has been playing Premier League for many years and has shown he is a natural sportsman with high level talent in other sports. Squad members will come together for the first time on Sunday 27th February as they begin the campaign for the National Side Series in October.

Volunteers recognised by BowlsWA Bowls WA was pleased to be able to recognise the efforts of many hard-working volunteers within our sport during December with a Volunteer Recognition Event. The sundowner event was held at Crown Perth ironically the only establishment that allows in-house gambling in Perth, which is the lifeblood of many of the bowling clubs on the east coast – whereas in WA, no bowling club is complete without the money wheel, chook raffle, meat pack or the odd bottle of wine changing hands at the end of the day given the right $2 raffle ticket. An interesting statistic to highlight our reliance on the Volunteer in WA – is that the National Bowls Census has just been released which amongst other things tells us that nationally there are 171 clubs that pay their Club Coach a Wage or Honorarium – only 5 of those 171 are in WA. In Greens preparation nationally 51% are prepared by Club Employees or Contractors – in WA it is 22% with 70% of Greens in WA prepared by Volunteers and finally 638 Clubs around the country pay their office staff – of that 638 only 56 are in WA and the numbers along those lines go on showing that WA really leads the way in volunteer help amongst clubs. In many respects we wouldn’t change that but the point is none of this would happen without the Volunteer, whether that be at the Club, League, Zone or Association level. As part of the function Glen Dunkerton from Regional Men’s Health Initiative was also able to give those in attendance a brief presentation on issues that affect Men in WA and how we can help. The partnership between Regional Men’s Health and Bowls WA seeks opportunities at regional clubs for the RMHI team to encourage men to talk openly about men’s health issues particularly but not limited to mental health, alcohol consumption, prostate etc. Bowls WA CEO Ken Pride, President Larry Bandy, and attending Board members thanked those who had given their time in recent years on committees and/or in the promotion of the sport of bowls. Of note was the Badge of Merit awarded to long time and only recently former Bowls WA Umpires Chair Michael Garratt.
12
The Badge of Merit is awarded exclusively to those who perform 10 continuous years of volunteer service at Association level. A brief summary of Volunteers recognised was as follows:
Certificate of Appreciation A brief summary of Volunteers recognised was as follows: • Simon Alden – with his website Bowls 360 and his longtime and current hosting of the Bowls Show on Sport FM every Saturday morning • Dave Rankin – for his website Perth Pennants and for some time our resident BWA photographer • Clive Adams – for his work on a northern suburbs community radio show and his long time journalistic excellence as the Bowls writer in the Sunday Times.
Certificate of Service • Anne Lilley – a long time servant in the Inter Region Round Robin and Bowls Management Committee. • John Bridge – for many years a reliable voice of reason and worker on our Fixtures and Events Committee. • Kevin Heberle – who made his way up from Gnowangerup and a long time member of the League, Zone and Country Committee. • Derek Boardman – for his time on a number of committees but primarily in our Fixtures and Events area. • Roger Barns – in our High-Performance area as a state selector, many years as Chairman of that group and the countless hours watching others perform in order to make state teams. • Ken Perks – also in our High-Performance area, this time as our previous Under 18s Coach.
Bowls WA Certificate and Badge of Merit • Michael Goble-Garratt for his long-time work in guiding our Umpires Committee both in WA and on a national committee of Umpires as the BWA representative – notwithstanding the countless hours in passing and failing our Officials in WA.

Men’s State Singles
David Downey reigns supreme by PIETER HARRIS The Western Australian Men’s State Singles concluded at the Bassendean Bowling Club on Sunday with a first-time winner crowned as the 2021-22 Champion. The first Semi-Finals was a back-and-forth affair with David Downey (Manning) overcoming Dale Marsland (Mosman Park) 25-21. Downey started quickly, racing to a 7-2 lead with an early four and three on consecutive ends. However, Marsland put together a great run, winning eight of the next eleven ends to take the lead 15-10. Downey again won multiple ends and when he got to 21-16 in the first to 25 contest, he looked to have the running. But again Marsland fought back and drew level at 21 all with his own run of four consecutive ends. With both players playing outstanding bowls, it was Downey who was able to finish it off with a couple of two’s to win 25-21. The second Semi-Final saw Clive Adams (Cambridge) lead for much of the game before getting overrun by the fastfinishing Russell Bates (Doubleview) 25-24. Adams jumped out to a 5-1 lead and then slowly pulled away from Bates to look the likely winner at 1911. While most people at Bassendean were glad to feel the breeze come in to cool things off early in the afternoon, Adams would have hoped it could have stayed away a bit longer as Bates took his game to another level. Adams continued to play very well but Bates getting close early and often each end was telling. A two, four, and then a two to Bates turned the 11-19 deficit into a 19-19 scoreline very quickly. Adams dug in to pick up singles and looked on the verge • David Downey in action. of victory at 24-21 and holding game. However, Bates was not going to be denied and won the last four ends to win 25-24. As per usual the Bassendean Bowling Club produced a magnificent 17 second green for the final day of the State Singles.
14
• David Downey – triumphant in the Men's State Singles.
However, what would have been a joy to play on in the morning with hardly a breeze bowling, albeit quite hot, became more difficult in the afternoon as a gusty cooling breeze settled in. However, you wouldn’t have known it as both players had their moments of covering the jack during the game. Bates started quickly with a three on the third end to lead 4-1 but after an extended break to Downey due to Bates’s long semi-final, Downey found his groove and both players went bowl for bowl for the next 19 ends. With the score at 9-8 in Downey’s favor, a change came over the game. Downey won seven of the next nine ends to have one hand on the trophy at 22-10. However as Bates showed in his semi-final, he would not be beaten without a fight. Again it happened quickly with Bates grabbing seven shots over four ends to move to 17-22. The Downey supporters may have been getting a little nervous but David Downey certainly wasn’t as he finished off the Russell Bates fightback with a big three to move to a 25-17 victory and the title of the 2021-22 Western Australian Men’s State Singles Champion.

Women’s State Singles
Hailey Packer grabs centre stage by PIETER HARRIS The Western Australian Women’s State Singles concluded at the Bassendean Bowling Club on Sunday with magnificent bowls played in both the Semi-Finals and Final. The first Semi-Final saw Hailey Packer (Manning) take to the green against Jenny Parker (Mosman Park). Both ladies started strongly going shot for shot for the first seven ends leading to a 4-4 score line. Packer was then able to string together three winning ends in a row to open up a small lead. Parker fought back with two of her own but then Packer went again winning another four ends to lead 16-6. A couple of two’s and a three saw Parker fight back again but it wasn’t enough as Hailey Packer finished the game off with a four and a single over the last three ends to win 25-14. The second Semi-Final saw two Mosman Park teammates battle it out. Both Lisa Featherby and Kerry Andersen have won many state titles over the years but neither had been able to grab the elusive singles title. Featherby started strongly to go 3-0 up and was then able to hold a similar lead for much of the first half of the game, 8-5 after nine ends, 11-8 after thirteen ends, and 16-13 after twenty-one ends. First Andersen would get a little closer and then Featherby would stretch the lead a little further and Andersen would reel it back in. For much of the game, Featherby could not break the rope of the looming Andersen shadow, as Andersen continually made her opponent come up with the big shot. After the twenty-second end, Andersen had closed it back up to a single shot and looked like she might finally have been able to find the front. • Hailey in action. But Featherby was not to be denied and got a three back to lead 19-15 and then finally broke that rope to close it out quickly with a two, a one, and a three to win 25-15. Due to the heat of the day, the start of the final was delayed for approximately an hour but when they got started Hailey
BowlsWA • Jack Hi • Summer 2022
• Hailey with husband Cody and their son Jasper.
Packer jumped out of the blocks to lead 4-0 over Lisa Featherby. Featherby quickly found her feet and hit back with a couple of scores but Packer always looked more likely to win the end even when she didn’t. A couple of two’s put Packer up 8-3 and then they went shot for shot until the score line showed Packer still in front 12-9. The next five ends were all Packer’s with a two and a three bordering three singles to jump the lead out to 20-9. A quick finish to the game looked likely as Featherby struggled with consistency and was just hanging in there. However as sometimes can happen, a good shot by a player and a loose end by their opponent can fill players with confidence. Featherby started to make inroads slowly and after winning three ends in a row, you could see some belief return. At 2113 it still seemed unlikely the way Packer was playing and at 22-15 it was still a long way back for Featherby, but a four and then a one put the score at 22-20 and it was game on. A single to Packer kept her opponent at bay but for only one end as Featherby grabbed a three to make the score line of 23-23. Holding her nerve, Hailey Packer finished off Lisa Featherby’s resurgence by taking a two and grabbing her first WA Women’s State Singles Championship 25-23.

Gotcha 4 Life – Supporting mental fitness
Knott bowls 30 hours straight for charity Manning Memorial lawn bowler and WA State Representative Shane Knott has set a yet to be verified record for the longest game of singles when he completed a 30 hour marathon of bowls at his home club on November 15 and 16, 2021.
• Shane Knott
• Kelli – the banana!
• Shane with Brad Hogg.

The entire match was video recorded and has been sent to the Guinness World Records headquarters for verification – the previous record was 27hr 59minutes set in February 2018 in New Zealand. After starting at 10am on Sunday morning the record was completed at 4pm Monday afternoon with Shane still playing terrific bowls, he looked great and only really complaining about some sore feet. His played the last hour against his son Hayden and wife Natalie and at the finish he was extremely proud and overwhelmed with the support by everyone involved. The record attempt was done in honor of charity, Shane raising $11,712 for his charity Gotcha 4 Life supporting mental fitness. A large contingent of Manning club mates plus plenty of supporters from the wider bowling community got behind Shane on his attempt. His workplace Plumbing Bros also donated $2 for every toucher and with 502 touchers that was $1,004 added to the total. Another generous donor was well known bowler Dave Rankin who shaved off his long moustache at the event after raising over $2,500 to support Shane. Shane played against 28 separate opponents across the 30 hours with just a 5 minute break allocated for each hour, this was allowed to be banked so he had a few 10-30 minute meal, shower and toilet breaks but not once did he sleep throughout the entire period. He mostly ate banana’s during the matches to keep him going along with plenty of water and energy drinks. He may have wondered if he had too many • Shane with his wife Natalie and kids Georgia and Hayden. bananas when one of his opponents in Kelli Wray turned up dressed as a banana. Kelli completed the midnight to 1am shift. Another popular opponent was Bowls Ambassador Brad Hogg whose appearance coincided with the T20 World Cup Cricket final saw Channel 10 News come along to catch up with the former International spinner and promote the charity event. Hogg lapping up the attention showing his unique tongue out approach on delivery had transition from cricket to bowls. Overall Shane defeated his challengers with a very impressive score line 580-352, we have put together some numbers for his effort. Pairs of shoes worn – 2; Opponents – 28; Hours – 30; Score – 580-352; Ends played – 500*; Bowls played – 2000*; Touchers (all players) – 502; Distance covered – 18kms* (* = estimated). Women’s State Pairs
Men’s State Pairs
Blake and Dale on fire in pairs
• Denise Kelly and Lee Poletti.
Poletti wins fourth title Lee Poletti (Mosman Park) won her 4th WA Women’s State Pairs title while her partner Denise Kelly (Mosman Park) won her first when they came out on top of the 2021-22 Women’s State Pairs Championships at the Warwick Bowling Club. Poletti was a late inclusion into the team when Kelly’s partner was unable to play at the last minute. With Poletti available, it then proved a last-minute decision to join up would become a title winning decision. In the first Semi Final, Poletti and Kelly came up against one of the most successful combinations in women’s state pairs history in Noelene Abe (Corrigin) and Kerry Andersen (Mosman Park). Abe and Andersen have won this title four times as a pairing and were big chances to win it for a fifth time this season. However, Poletti and Kelly held their nerve and overcame Abe and Andersen 20-17. The second Semi Final was also a close-run match with Paula Reid (Kojonup) and Shelley Radcliffe (Mosman Park) outlasting Rhonda Prosser (North Beach) and Debbie Rhine (North Beach) 21-18 in a high-class affair. The final turned into a see-sawing affair. First Poletti and Kelly jumped out to a strong start to lead 6-I after five ends. Reid and Radcliffe then reeled off six of the next eight ends including two 3’s to jump out to a 12-8 lead with five ends remaining. A single to Poletti and then a three of her own saw the Poletti/Kelly combination draw level with only three ends remaining. Another single saw Poletti take the lead, but Reid and Radcliffe were not done yet and a two on the second last end saw them go to the final end in front. A tense last end saw the jack get moved in the final stages and when the final bowls were played, Lee Poletti and Denise Kelly had secured the required two shots to win the game and the Women’s State Pairs title 15-14.

Blake Nairn (Cambridge) and Dale Marsland (Mosman Park) continued their fruitful relationship by taking out the 2021-22 Men’s State Pairs Championship at the Sorrento Bowling Club. Having already won the 2021-22 State Fours and the 2020-21 Doubleview Masters Pairs together, Nairn and Marsland are a force to be reckoned with. In the first Semi Final Nairn overcame the experienced pairing of Dave Rankin (Kardinya) and Bill Brandsma (Kalamunda). Leading all the way in a super tight contest, Nairn and Marsland prevailed 13-9 in the 18end contest. In the second Semi Final, the Manning pairing of Daniel Trewhella and Tom Mitchell overcame the country pair of Andrew Drayton (Augusta) and Peter Tassell (Busselton). Trewhella and Mitchell started strongly with two 4’s in the first four ends and maintained that lead all the way to run out 20-12 victors.
• Dale Marsland and Blake Nairn.
The final between Nairn/Marsland and Trewhella/ Mitchell promised to be a battle to the end, and it looked likely with the two teams locked together at 8-8 after eight ends. Both teams had shown a variety of shot play from cold draws to nice sit and stay shots to big drives. However, when Nairn took a three on the ninth end, it turned out to be the beginning of a match winning drive. Nairn won the next six ends to take a 20-8 lead with only four ends remaining. Trewhella got a two to give some hope of a barnstorming finish, but it wasn’t to be with Nairn and Marsland finishing off the contest in the next two ends to win 2510. This was Blake Nairn’s second state pairs title after previously taking the title in 2014-15 but it was Dale Marsland first pairs title.

Another successful Kukerin carnival
• The winning combination.
The annual A & M Williams two-day bowling classic was played on Tuesday 26th and Wednesday 27th of October. Unfortunately the weather was atrocious with rain and very cold conditions for the capacity field of bowlers from many parts of the South West and beyond of WA which this popular event attracts each year. This year bowlers attended from Albany, Middleton Beach, Emu Point x2, Kojonup, Gnowangerup, Moodiarrup, Safety Bay, Manning, Exmouth, Quairading, Dumbleyung, Kondinin, Newdegate, Lake Grace, and a composite team led by C. Carruthers including ex Kukerin members I. Quartermaine, and G. Smith. Day one was played with the difficulty of rain breaks, but we managed to complete the three games scheduled, and at days end, three teams were undefeated and one team on 2 wins and a draw. Day two conditions deteriorated, but we were able with difficulty to get two games completed and enable a result to be achieved. All players were appreciative of the efforts of Kukerin Club in their conducting of the event in such circumstances. The Gnowangerup team of A. Crabbe, skip, K. Heberle, third, R. Fleckner, second, M. Johnson, lead, came through undefeated to win the event. Second place was the team of C. Henry, skip, P. Mc Grechan, third, R. Hannah, second, D. Ballarino, lead with four wins and a draw. Third place was claimed narrowly by the C. Carruthers team with four wins from P. Barrow’s team from Manning also on four wins. The club wish to once again thank our very loyal small band of ladies who catered for the event with their usual wonderful array of food which is appreciated by all players. Kukerin Bowling Club thank our many sponsors and the continued support of travelling players who the event such a success each year.

Women’s O60s State Triples
Champs dethroned by Hastings trio The crown of Women’s Over 60’s State Triples Champions went to Therese Hastings, Robyn O’Brien and Helen Heal at the Cockburn Bowling Club when they overcame last year’s champions in dominate fashion. In the first Semi Final Hastings, O’Brien and Heal had to fight hard to overcome Noelene Abe (Corrigin), Liz Matthews (Manning) and Cathie Smith (Mosman Park) 17-14 The second Semi Final saw a larger score line of 22-7 where the defending champions of Lee Poletti (Mosman Park), Kerry Andersen (Mosman Park) and Vicki Spragg (Dudley Park) overcame the Leeming trio of Pam Webber, Sue Neill and Helen Thurston. The final immediately became a game of offence with each team winning every second end and multiples being commonplace for the Hastings trio. Hastings, O’Brien and Heal won the first, third, fifth, seventh and ninth ends with shot numbers of 3, 3, 3, 2 and a 6 to have 17 shots after winning only 5 ends. In return Poletti, Andersen and Spragg won the second, fourth, sixth and eighth end with shot numbers of 1, 2, 3 and 1 to have 7 shots.
• The Women's winning Triples team.
Finally on the tenth end Hastings won two ends in a row and then added a couple more to lead 21-7 and the game looked lost. However a mini resurgence took place by Poletti when she grabbed a 4 and then a 3 to move to 14-21 with still four ends to play. But it was not to be when Hastings steadied by winning a 2 and then getting consecutive 3’s to put the game out of reach. Therese Hastings, Robyn O’Brien and Helen Heal had won their first Women’s Over 60’s State Triples title with a commanding 29-14 win.
Men’s O60s State Triples
First title for Kalamunda trio The Kalamunda trio of Greg Trevaskis, Bob Farrant and Vince Hughes won theirs and Kalamunda’s first Over 60’s State title when they won the 2021-22 Men’s Over 60’s State Triples at the Rossmoyne Bowling Club. In the first Semi Final, the Kalamunda team played great bowls and rode a little luck at crucial times to overcome a deficit to defeat Sorrento’s Bruce Eagles, Ian Linford, and Greg Taylor 16-14. The second Semi Final was also a tight affair with the country team of Ken Wolfenden, Phil Becker and Wayne Butler (Northam) downing the composite side of Joe Rollnik (Ellenbrook), Robert Bandy (Manning) and Alan Booth (Manning) 18-15. Trevaskis, Farrant and Hughes jumped out of the blocks very quickly in the final and took the lead 7-0 after only three ends, largely helped by a five on the second end. Not to be perturbed Wolfenden, Becker and Butler then grabbed some multiples of their own and drew level 8-8 after eight ends. When it looked like Wolfenden could continue his march, Trevaskis jumped away again with some precision bowls to win four of the next five ends to regain a winning margin and lead 15-9.

• The Men's winning Triples team.
Once again, the tide turned with Wolfenden winning three consecutive ends to get with two shots with ends to play. A single to Trevaskis on the second last end gave them a three-shot lead and made the last end all about covering the dangers for Trevaskis. With the sight of the title in their eyes, the Greg Trevaskis, Bob Farrant and Vince Hughes team did everything right and gave the opposition little chance to get the required three shots to draw level meaning they took home to Kalamunda a hard fought 16-14 win and the Men’s Over 60’s State Triples title. Women’s Masters Pairs
Smith and Morss – master ladies pairs The North Beach Ladies Masters Pairs concluded on Sunday after three days of fierce competition and brilliant bowling, ending with a new pairing claiming masters victory. The competition was played on December 10-12, 2021. With a final 8 made up of some of the best bowlers in the state the final day was set to be a thriller. The day started with two tight semi-finals with great bowls from all players. The game of Laura Merz and Hailey Packer vs Lisa Featherby and Linda Warburton had multiple lead changes, with neither team able to get a run of ends or big scores to get a significant lead. Lisa and Linda were able to finish a little stronger to get the win 20-16. The game between Helen Morss and Lisa Smith and Noelene Abe and Kerry Andersen was also tight, with scores locked at 13 with 2 ends to play. Noelene and Kerry got their noses in front on with a shot in the 17th, however Helen and Lisa were able to respond with a 2 on the last end to win 15-14. In the final, Helen and Lisa got off to a great start to lead 14-2 after 10 ends. Lisa and Linda fought back, outscoring their opponents 7-1 over the next 5 ends to get within 6 shots. Helen and Lisa picked up a 4 on the 16th end to give themselves a 10 shot lead with 2 ends to play. Lisa and Linda were able to win the last 2 ends, but not with big enough scores to hit the front, going down 14-19. Congratulations to Helen Morss on a second Ladies Master Pairs title and to Lisa Smith who is a first time winner.

Men’s Masters Triples
• Simon Alden, Clive Adams and Blake Nairn – winners of the Men's Masters Triples.
Masters Triples to Nairn, Adams and Alden Last years runner-ups became the champions in the Bassendean Men’s Masters Triples as Blake Nairn (Cambridge), Clive Adams (Cambridge) and Simon Alden (Bassendean) came out on top on the final day of competition, November 28th, 2021. The competition began the Sunday prior when 30 teams took to the very well prepared greens to fight it out in qualifying play. The new format was well received with teams needing to finish in the top eight positions based on wins and shots up after three matches. At the end of the day the qualifying ladder saw exactly eight teams undefeated which meant no shots up countbacks were required. The ultimate winners skipped by Nairn survived a very tough opener against the local Bassendean team of Eugene O’Sullivan, John Holman and Scott Bermingham overcoming a slow start before scoring a three on the last end to win by one shot and finish seventh in qualifying. The other seven qualifying teams were all extremely strong combinations, all having a big chance of claiming the title. On a hot Sunday the final eight began battle and saw the following results with Matt Mitchell winning 22-13 over Stewart Gosstray, John Slavich 15-8 over Steve Novak, Shane Knott 18-10 over Nic Reagan and Nairn 19-14 over Glenn Pauling. The semi finals provided the match of the day. BowlsWA • Jack Hi • Summer 2022
Shane Knott (Manning) and his team of Anthony Williams (Doubleview) and Warren Holt (Wagin) were first to make it into the final winning 16-11 over Mitchell (Emu Point), Corey Bessant (Mt Lawley) and Dale Marlsand (Mosman Park). Two-time Masters Triples champion John Slavich (Doubleview) looked like his team of Brad White (Doubleview) and Justin Opie (South Perth) might progress when they held a three shot lead over Nairn’s team in what had been a cracking game. However Nairn played the magic bowl of the tournament when after some discussion it was decided a drive was the way to go and he removed the closest opposition bowl to score a four, win the game by one shot and head into the final full of confidence. The final promised to be a top affair with Knott versus Nairn and both teams in really hot form however with Simon Alden leading superbly along with Adams and Nairn contributing strongly it meant the Knott team was always under pressure. Before you knew it Nairn had raced to a 15-1 after just six ends which included three scores of four shots. Knott’s team was able to apply some pressure when they scored a four of their own followed by a three to close the margin to just seven shots in the middle stages however Nairn’s team still had plenty of good bowls left and again put the issue beyond doubt before claiming the title without having to play the last of the scheduled 18 ends. The final score being 22-11. 25
, Women s Over 60s State Pairs
Back to back for Linda and Kerry Linda Warburton and Kerry Andersen (Mosman Park) swept all before them in completing back-to-back Women’s Over 60’s State Pairs titles and their third together in the last five years at the Bassendean Bowling Club played November 10-12, 2021. In the first Semi Final, Warburton and Andersen won six of the first seven ends to take a 14-2 lead over recent State Fours winner Jenny Bruce and her partner Lyn Colmer (Busselton). While offering some resistance in the second half of the match, Bruce and Colmer could only manage singles and an occasional two to eventually go down 11-19 despite winning eight ends of the seventeen-end game. The second Semi Final saw Janet Cocks and Rinske Butcher (North Beach) overcome Shelley Radcliffe and Renate Coote (Mosman Park) in a high scoring affair. It wasn’t until the eleventh end that a single was scored and by that time there had been four x 4’s, a couple of 3’s and the remainder being 2’s. Cocks and Butcher built a solid 17-9 lead only to see Radcliffe and Coote win five of the next six ends to get to 17-18. Cocks was able to steady to win the final three ends and go into the Final with a 22-17 win. As they did in the Semi-Final, Warburton and Andersen jumped out of the blocks with a three and a single on the first two ends and while the next ten ends were shared evenly,
• Women's O60s Pairs winners – Linda Warburton and Kerry Andersen.
Warburton scored multiples while Cocks could only get singles and a solitary two. Warburton grabbed a four and a three on the fifth and sixth ends and then further two’s and three’s at regular intervals to lead 18-6 after twelve ends. Cocks and Butcher had a mini revival, winning three consecutive ends to close the gap to 11-18 but with only three ends to play it seemed a forlorn task. With a single on the sixteenth task, Warburton was within grasp of the title. A five to Warburton and Andersen, with Cocks and Butcher chasing a number to stay in the contest, put the contest beyond doubt and Linda Warburton and Kerry Andersen retained their title in style.

, Men s Over 60s State Pairs
Gryta and Donald win first state title Alek Gryta (Mosman Park) and Ross Donald (Dalkeith Nedlands) won their first Men’s Over 60’s State Pairs title in style at the Sorrento Bowling Club played November 8-10, 2021. After an even first six ends in Gryta’s and Donald’s semi-final against the formidable pairing of Bruce Eagles and Greg Taylor (Sorrento), Gryta collected three fours in four ends to take a commanding 14-6 lead. A further two and single built the lead further to 17-6 before Eagles and Taylor fought back to win the next four ends. However, as they were all singles the lead was being reeled in very slowly and certainly not quick enough with the number of ends remaining. A two to Gryta on the third last end virtually sealed the match and then a single on the second last end finished it off with an insurmountable 20-10 victory. The second semi-final was a high quality affair for the much of the match with Geoff Devenish and David Anderson up against Ross White (Collie) and Gordon Twist (Eaton).
• Men's O60s Pairs winners – Alek Gryta and Ross Donald.
A collection of two’s saw Devenish jumped out to an 8-3 lead before White took a single and then a four to even the score up at 8-8. Again Devenish and Anderson took the lead with White and Twist just doing enough to stay in touch. At 14-11 to Devenish it was still anybody’s game but a three to Devenish took him to a 17-11 lead and then a two on the second last end sealed the game and a place in the final with a 19-12 win. The final was close early with all players doing their bit to keep the game at a high level. Devenish and Anderson were winning more ends early but only getting singles, while Gryta and Donald only won two of the first seven ends but they got a two and a four to lead 6-5. The two teams traded ends to reach 8-8 after eleven ends when disaster struck for Devenish and Anderson. On the twelfth end Gryta and Donald got a big six shots to jump to the lead. A single to Devenish helped keep things steady but then Gryta and Donald went big again with a two and then a big five to lead 21-9. Another two shots took the lead to 23-9 and made it impossible for Alek Gryta and Ross Donald to be caught as they waltzed away with the 2021-22 Men’s Over 60’s State Pairs title.

Warrior Wellbeing
My health and wellbeing – Who’s Responsible? We’re often told, if unwell, get to the doctor and they will deal with our health and wellbeing issue. The doctor will often give a diagnosis, treatment options and other assistance through referrals and follow up. But it is us as individuals that must make decisions and take action which ultimately drives the outcome. Based on some American research it is important to remember that one of the biggest determinants on our health (70%) are the decisions we make regarding wellbeing and lifestyle choices. It goes on to say that the remaining factors can vary between: • Genetics: It’s important to know family history and our vulnerability to certain illness/disease. • Environment: What we are exposed to (trauma, poverty, stressors). Living and working in regional WA can be tough dealing with such things as isolation, extreme climates and working with machinery. • The health system: Tyranny of distance and a lack of male friendly services exacerbates this. Undoubtedly the major impact is lifestyle choices! Reinforcing our takeaway message…my health and wellbeing is my responsibility! We say our overall health and wellbeing is made up of physical, mental and social/spiritual aspects and to maintain all three, we as individuals need to be the driver. Whether dealing with situational distress, physical health problems, a diagnosed mental illness or an issue impacting our social/spiritual wellbeing (challenges around identity, meaning and purpose or our sense of belonging), the doctor will provide the framework to follow but decisions and changes ultimately need to be made by us. Making informed decisions are a part of life, whether it’s to do with family, work and social activities, why then should our health and wellbeing be any different? Blokes in general are action orientated but making decisions and acting on things that can negatively impact our wellbeing can be put off.
The warrior attitude is an admirable attribute especially when dealing with sporting, business or seasonal adversity. However, this same attitude can lead to negligence and not putting ourselves first. We have all seen the numerous health campaigns…'A simple test could save your life', 'don’t delay' or 'know your score', but we also constantly hear similar comments from blokes when discussing health and wellbeing issues: • It won’t happen to me / she’ll be right. • We know the issues, but we don’t want to show ourselves as the only one with a problem. • I will just see how it goes (the back pain I’ve had for 6 months). The buck stops with us blokes to be the decision maker on health and wellbeing issues, it’s not the doctor’s, wife’s or employers’ responsibility, but ours! Remember the three C’s of life: Choices, Chances, Changes. You must make a choice to take a chance, or your life will never change. Diet, exercise and sleep are three areas you can start making some simple changes to help improve your health and wellbeing outcomes and remember a routine service visit could reduce the risk of some expensive repairs down the track. Make an appointment with your GP to discuss your individual risk factors, don’t wait till it becomes a chronic health problem.

Life Membership Award
Elaine McDonald awarded Life Membership Life Membership to the Southwest Bowling League was recently awarded to Eaton Club Member Elaine McDonald in recognition of her Excellent Service, to the League and all Lawn Bowlers, for her untiring work as the League Umpires and Coaches Presenter and Assessor. Elaine started her bowling career in 1985-86 as a member of the Darkan Bowling Club in the Forrest League. In 1992-93 she became a National Umpire and there her services began. In 1995-96 she took over as the Forrest League Umpires Rep. a position she held for five years. In 2000-01 she and her husband Bruce sold their farm at Darkan and moved to Bunbury where they joined the Eaton Bowling and Social Club. The following year on request from Bowls WA, she took up the position of the Umpires Rep for the Southwest Bowling League. This was the title until 2015-16 when it became Umpires Presenter and Assessor and some 21 years later Elaine still holds the position. For the past 5 years Elaine has also worked as the Presenter & Assessor for the Leeuwin League. In 2016-17 she also became a Coaches Presenter and Assessor. These two positions have enabled many bowlers from the two Leagues to be coached as Umpires and Coaches, without having to travel to Perth to attain same, or for Bowls WA reps to have to travel to the Southwest to undertake the classes.

• Laurie Blurton with Elaine McDonald.
In addition to her work as Presenter and Assessor, for Coaching and Umpiring, Elaine has been the Deputy Vice President (undergoing all the Captains duties) and President of the League (both for a 2 year term.) She has represented the League at the highest playing level— Inter league and Inter zone Round Robins, and Country v Metropolitan. Elaine has won several League and Zone titles. Elaine has been in the winning team of the State Fours twice, winner of Country Week Pairs. She represented the State for three years, the Over 60’s for two and was the Assistant Coach/Team Manager of the State Womens Side for four years. In 2015-16 Elaine became an International Technical Official and has represented our League well. She has officiated at National Side Series, Australian Indoor Singles, Multi Nations, Trans-Tasman, Asian Pacific Games, Australian Singles Champion of Champions, Australian Senior Side Series and last but no means least officiated at the 2018 Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast. When asked why she has held the position she has had for 26 years Elaine says that she absolutely loves the work and being able to pass on her knowledge to any bowler who wishes to become either a Umpire or a Coach. She also hopes to continue in this role for as long as she can – it will only be health issues or someone younger wishing to take over that she would step aside for. “I just love it,” she said.
