Plenty of bowls in the off-season Welcome to the Winter edition of Jack Hi. Although members are in season recess, many clubs are offering a bowls program during the cooler months with attendances rising each year as bowlers make the most of the opportunities to play all year round.
Maintaining all the services required of this organisation, seeking sponsorship and delivering a surplus each year is imperative to the viability of the Association and I thank Finance Director Lisa Featherby, CEO Ken Pride and Accounts Manager Liz Rolt for their diligent management of finances.
Awards Night
Positive changes for Thursday players
The Awards Night at Crown in May was once again a resounding success. The evening is a wonderful way to acknowledge our volunteers, clubs and elite players. I thank those who attended the evening to help celebrate our season and my congratulations to all those who accepted awards. I would like to thank Aaron Delaporte, our Operations Manager who was instrumental in the success of this event. There is a full report on the evening later in this edition.
The Fixtures and Events committee have been buoyed by the positive response to proposed changes to the men’s Thursday pennant competition Following recommendations from the Board and the Bowls Management Committee and a positive response from the President’s Forum, the new format will be introduced for the 2019/20 season. An earlier starting time and a sets play format will be an interesting and exciting change for Thursday players.
Profitable 2018/19 financial year With the AGM on July 27, I am pleased to note a surplus for the 2018/19 financial year.
Vale Gail Susac We were saddened by the recent passing of Gail Susac. Gail was a dedicated member of the Association and contributed much to the game. Gail celebrated 50 years of membership of the Wanneroo Bowling Club last year, was a past President of the WALBA, Chair of the BWA Umpires Committee for many years and a life member of Bowls WA. We will miss her presence.
Welcome Lee Bunney I extend a warm welcome to Lee Bunney who has accepted a position on the Board of BWA. I wish Lee, a member of the Mundaring Bowling Club, an interesting and fulfilling term as a member of Board.

KEN PRIDE
BPL Cup events proving very popular I am not sure bowls has an off-season, perhaps a non-pennant period is a better reflection of this time of the year. There is certainly plenty going on around our clubs, both metro and in the larger country clubs as well. The BPL Cup qualifying events have been in full swing and from all reports are setting records all around the country for the number of teams entering. Here in WA that is also true and having been to the event at Pine Rivers I am not surprised – it is one of the great week’s of bowls and when coupled with the BPL itself takes the sport to a whole new level. For those teams successful in winning their way through to the BPL Cup #2, it will be something you won’t forget in a hurry.
Metro Midweek Competition At the time of writing we of course will also have a different version of the metro midweek competition to attend to. Borne out of invited submissions from individuals and clubs, the Board appointed Bowls 2025 Committee considered all aspects of the current pennant offerings and recommended some subtle changes to the midweek competition. Subtle in that the only change to the current Thursday competition will be the method of scoring and thereby determining a winner.Sets Play will ensure many contests go right down to the wire (certainly the last couple of ends) and is that not what we want ? Like any secondary competition this is an opportunity for some experimentation and to try and lift the excitement levels, without throwing away the traditions of the game. Sets Play is a well accepted form of the game with a number of national and international events played in this way. The Bowls 2025 Committee certainly looks forward to some reasoned discussion on the format at season’s end – tweeking things in an effort for further improvement is all part of the process.
Bowls Link At the moment training is occurring around the state on the new Bowls Link system and from what I was fortunate to witness at the Australian Open is a significantly better product and more user friendly than its predecessor. In particular its 'phone friendliness' will ensure an easier spread of information on all areas of the Association’s operations – particularly post game pennant results. Kelvin Rogers from BA and Clive Adams have just completed a comprehensive visit to country centres to present Bowls Link and its features to our regional clubs.

Successful past 12 months The Annual General Meeting time of the year is in full swing and Bowls WA’s is no different. It has been a very successful 12 months, with a positive surplus made, plenty of new events established and existing one’s stabilised from past years (and some even grown) and a new IT system to be launched. Retiring Board Directors in Larry Bandy, Lisa Featherby and Debbie Capper have all been returned as Directors with Lee Bunney joining the Board in an existing casual vacancy position. Welcome back to Larry, Lisa and Debbie and we look forward to Lee’s input over the next two years of her appointment.
New Academy Coach The first appointment for the re-structured High Performance area has been made and we welcome Linda Warburton to the role of Academy Coach. Following on from the work of Tony Hockey, Linda will seek out players of great promise, working with them in a coordinated fashion, in tune with our various other state coaches, whilst also sorting out some bad habits that may have crept into our already established players game. It is a full on role that will be statewide in its capacity and we look very much to its continued progress. Other state roles including Open Side coaches and selectors will now be tackled, as we look to build an effective high performance team.
New season closes in Many of our members are enjoying the sunshine of the north or are overseas – or maybe you are just relaxing at home. Wherever you may be, travel safe and return refreshed for the season which is not too far away.

First Bowlers Arm State Championships Another first for Inclusive Bowls in WA – the inaugural State Bowling Arm Singles Championships – was run in May at Warnbro Bowling Club. With 36 initial entries the schedule of play started with six sections of round-robin games before playing Quarter Finals, Semi Finals and Finals. Warnbro can boast about 12 under-cover rinks that provide the ability to continue play in inclement weather, as well as excellent night lighting – combine this with extremely capable volunteers – the club made this event a delight to run! Congratulations to Bunbury’s Laurie Blurton on winning this event and taking a Gold Medal from Wanneroo’s Mitch Brown who had an excellent tournament to claim Silver. The two had a terrific final before Laurie came out on top 18-14.
Bob Eayrs from Mandurah took the Bronze in another great game from Barrie Bywater from Toodyay. Thank you to all the players and we look forward to possibly even more entries next season.

Mark from Synthetic Bowling Solutions came to our rescue last September (2018), to help fix up our greens. The work they did on the three greens exceeded our expectations, especially with the re-use of our carpet. He put a dividing wall on the green and this has now enabIed us to have two separate greens and allows us to replace one carpet at a time as we need. This is to the delight of alI bowlers and the attraction of new bowIers to the club. I can highIy recommend Mark and his team as they were very informative of the process throughout from start to finish and were avaiIabIe to answer any questions from the members. We would highIy recommend Synthetic Bowling Solutions for any and all Green Repairs and RepIacement. Aled Williams – President.
Comet Bay Bowling Club
The Comet Bay Bowling Club in Singleton WA wish to thank Mark Johnson and his team from Synthetic Bowling Solutions for the work carried on its new Green in February through March this year. Mark kept the management committee and Club members fully informed of problems encountered with our original base and fully explained any additional costs involved. He and his team were well organised, and all work was carried out in a professional manner. The new Green is settling in very well and will only get better with continued use over time. Comet bay would recommend Mark and his team at Synthetic Bowling Solutions to any Bowling Club needing new Greens or work done on their existing Greens. Ron Arnold – President

Rockingham Bowling Club
After seeing what was achieved at Mandurah Bowls Club and Comet Bay Bowls Club we contacted Mark Johnson from Synthetic Bowling Solutions to discuss our needs to see what could be done to renovate our B Green polymer base and replace our Carpet within a tight budget. Once a schedule of all the works and a budget was in place Rockingham Bowls Club members were able to assist in the process alongside Mark and his team to achieve savings that allowed us to further revitalise our Club and get our members back playing on a first rate Pennants Green. Marks team went above and beyond with our Club and all thoroughly enjoyed the experience. We would recommend Mark and his team to anyone wanting a first rate Green built or repaired at their Club. MICHAEL GOBLE-GARRATT
Laws of The Sport of Bowls Crystal Mark Version 3.1 – April 2019 Changes to the current Laws of The Sport of Bowls have been made primarily in the specifications of Bowls, with the inclusion of yet a smaller bowl size than previously – from the minimum of 116mm diameter at their widest point to 112mm. The other change is one allowing manufacturers to omit some grooved rings on the bowls. Other than these changes, the remaining specifications and previous Laws remain unchanged, with most of the change taking place within the permitted Domestic Regulations. The major change to the Law book in Australia is to the Domestic Regulations, with a revamp of DR 2 Game Anomalies significantly clarifying the definitions and the rules on Substitutes.
Policies Reference and outlines to Bowls Australia policies are also included in this edition, full copies of which can be downloaded from the BA website www.bowls.com.au/aboutba/key-documents/constitution-and-policies/ These policies, along with State policies, do form part of the Laws that govern our game and unless otherwise stated, cannot be over ridden by States, Territories, Leagues or Clubs. The new Laws of The Sport of Bowls, Crystal Mark Version 3.1 was updated in April and released in July and is available for purchase from Bowls WA. Clubs are reminded that a copy of the current Law book MUST be included in the Club's Umpires Kit. Officiating (Umpires, Measurers and Markers) course attendees, whether New or re-accrediting are reminded that a condition of attaining the required competency is that each person must have a copy of the current Law Book. Current Officials should also obtain a copy of the new book.
Umpires Course/s The next round of Officiating courses to be held in the Metro Region will be in September as usual, with the evening sessions to be held at Perth and Tattersalls Club over three Monday evenings, 9th, 16th and 23rd from around 5.00pm. A separate evening re-accreditation session will be conducted at a date and venue to be advised when the notices are sent to all Metro Clubs' registered email addresses. The weekend sessions will once again be held at Willetton Bowling Club on Saturday 7th (morning and afternoon) and Sunday 8th (morning) September. It seems that some clubs still have not got the message that part of their responsibilities within the sport entails having sufficient Umpires as part of their participation in Bowls WA events, which include Pennants and State events.
8
These Metro courses offer an opportunity to rectify the situation before discussions at management levels are compelled to turn to what penalties would need to be imposed to encourage such clubs to address this serious deficiency.
Greens It has been noticed that some players and even Umpires, when called upon to determine whether a bowl or Jack is out of bounds on the side of the rink of play, have blithely used one of the myriad painted alternate centre lines prevalent particularly on synthetic greens, and simply visually declared it 'IN' when a minute edge of the jack or bowl is partially on such line. In Australia boundary lines are not marked in any way on the green and the alternate semi-permanent centre lines painted on some greens cannot be used to detemine the precise edge of a rink which is defined only by the rink boundary markers on the bank – be they affixed to the face of the bank or pegs on the bank as defined in Law 49. If a bowl or jack appears to be on the edge of the rink by the smallest amount, albeit apparently clearly 'touching' one of these painted lines, an Umpire should be called to confirm whether it is in or out of bounds. The Umpire should then use the appropriate equipment to determine the status of the bowl – a boundary scope or liner-siter, used in the correct manner, and the bank boundary markers alone, ignoring any painted line on the green. Ditches have come under scrutiny with regard to the term 'holding surface' and the increasing use of synthetic material in place of previously traditional sand filled ditches. Bowls Australia Bowling Green Construction guidelines is a publication available on the BA website under the 'Resources' tab. This lays out the requirements for the construction of all types of green to comply with the Laws of the game. There is no other definition of the ditch holding surface requirements other than to state; Law 47.3: The ditch must have a holding surface which is free from obstacles and made of a material which will not damage the jack or the bowls. The tufted synthetic material used in the green construction, appears to have been accepted as a holding surface as indicated in Law 14.4: The position of a toucher in the ditch must be marked by a brightly coloured indicator not more than 50 millimetres wide and not more than 100 millimetres high, and which is fixed vertically either against the face of the bank or on top of the bank, immediately in line with the toucher. As well as the indicator, if the surface of the ditch is sand, lines can be drawn in the sand around the toucher. If the surface of the ditch is vegetation or synthetic, the lines can be drawn with chalk.

Bowls loses three influential members During the month of July the sport of bowls in WA lost three people who made a significant impact within the sport. Bowls WA extend their sympathy to the family and many bowling friends of Pat, Gail and Irene.
Pat Caffell
Irene Mariani
Pat Caffell was a dedicated player and volunteer within bowls who was still actively involved in the sport as he battled cancer which eventually took his life last month. A multiple state champion winning the State Fours on three occasions along with the Over 60’s Triples and most recently the Over 60’s Pairs with his brother Gary, a win that he really cherished. Off the field Pat was the last volunteer editor of the Jack Hi from June 2003 to the end of 2004, and more recently was also instrumental in resurrecting the Master Singles at Osborne Park. His dedication to that event was such that he used some of his time in hospital to chase up entrants to ensure that a maximum field would participate. Pat was one of the most respected and loved players in the game and will be sadly missed by his many friends and family.
The partner of well known bowler Dante Mariani, Irene played for both Bedford and Yokine during a bowls career which saw her win the State Pairs and State Fours Championships. She was also runner up in the State Singles in 2004 to an up and coming Therese Hastings.
Gail Susac Gail Susac’s involvement with the sport over many years was significant, commencing in 1991 with the Western Australian Ladies Bowling Association (WALBA) Umpires Committee. After various Executive positions Gail was appointed WALBA President from 1999-2001 and awarded a prestigious Merit Badge in 2006. To recognize her involvement in the sport Gail was made a Life Member of Bowls WA alongside Geoff Ellis and Trevor Barron in 2010. Gail’s dedication to the sport of bowls will long be remembered.

Rod Wishart – 40th Hall of Fame member
Rod Wishart inducted into Hall of Fame Rod Wishart was inducted as Bowls WA’s 40th Hall of Fame member at the Bowls WA Awards Night on Friday May 24th at Crown Perth. Having recently passed away the induction was accepted by his son Graeme, the Association Games Record holder for WA. Graeme was clearly honored, but also saddened, to receive the Award on behalf of his father. “I just wish Dad could have been here to accept this Award,” he said. “Dad just loved his bowls.” Wishart then went on to thank Trevor Barron and John Rainoldi for the nomination and the Hall of Fame Committee for accepting it. On reminiscing over the many achievements and memories of his father, Graeme said his father was most proud of the decision in the early 1980’s that the WA selectors took by looking towards the younger players such as Dennis Katunarich and John Rainoldi. This ultimately paved the way for a golden era of Men’s bowls where WA won the Alley Shield 6 times in an eleven year period. • Graeme Wishart.

Metro Club of the Year – Sorrento
Sorrento Bowling Club – a well governed club
One of WA’s largest clubs is also one of our most successful. Winning Metro Club of the Year four times in the last eight years is some feat, in this hotly contested category. A 17% increase of membership (including playing and social) to over 800 following a concerted marketing push over the past year requires a co-ordinated and well governed club. Incorporated within a ten-year strategies plan that was drawn up through extensive stakeholder collaboration is a comprehensive marketing and communication strategies and social media policy that ensures regular communication with members, local councillors and politicians – all critical to the on-going development of a community club. The support offered to community groups is a key to successful clubs and Sorrento assists with groups such as
Probus and other sporting clubs in the area utilising the facilities. Fundraising support for Silver Chain, Heart Foundation, Beyond Blue and the Cancer Council round out their involvements outside of bowls. The club continues to improve its facilities with an extension to the clubhouse to incorporate new office space, match room and meeting room areas, an extension on its existing undercover BBQ area and further upgrades to furniture, equipment and technology requirements. The club has had a very fine year with three promotions to a higher division and a commitment to regaining their lost men’s Premier League.
Congratulations to the Bowls WA Clubs of the Year Following a record number of submissions these clubs were judged to be those at the top of their game in categories such as membership, pennant performance, individual member performance and participation and administration and governance. Their awards were received amidst great acclaim at the annual awards evening with Sorrento Bowling Club chosen to represent Western Australia in the Club of the Year category at the Bowls Australia Awards Night in October.

Country Club of the Year – Northam
Awards Night 2019
,
• ?????????????????????????????????
Northam s efforts reap benefit The Jim Murray Award It has been a tough few years at Northam Bowling Club, but a 'can-do' attitude has turned its fortunes around to the point that numbers have stabilised, with a number of projects in and around the clubhouse completed. A new kitchen, the introduction of solar panels to reduce costs, mist sprinklers for the summer heat, an EFTPOS system and a new uniform have all contributed to a lifting of the members spirits. A strong commitment to community, so often seen in our country clubs has also 'spread the word' about NBC, with weekly Bingo, Darts, Carpet Bowls and meetings for community groups regularly based there. A solid year on the green with the ladies taking out the pennant, strong results in League events with wins in the Ladies League singles, pairs, fours and Men’s Fours all contributed to Northam winning their first Jim Murray Award in many a year!

Jack East Congratulations to Rossmoyne’s Jack East who took out the Under 18 Bowler of the Year Award at the Bowls WA Awards Night. Jack clinched the award in dramatic and unusual circumstances winning the Under 18 Singles in pouring rain 21-20 against former Under 18 Bowler of the Year Patrick Quinlan. Jack also won the Pairs with Aidan McAuliffe and finished runner up in the Fours. He will soon represented WA at the Under 18 National Championships playing Singles and Pairs with Marcus Simpson.

Small Metro Club of the Year – Mosman Park
Increased membership helps Mossies Mossies showed that they are more than just a club with great views. A 10% increase in membership, three sides promoted to a higher division and an all important promotion back to Premier League for the men capped off a great year for the club. No doubt the ladies would be disappointed in their runnersup position for the Premier League, but then again plenty of sides fell well short of that achievement. Representation at BWA events was incredibly strong with significant numbers supporting both men’s and ladies events – including some trips to the Gold Coast for Australian Open performers. An increased membership does not happen by chance with a flourishing Jack Attack competition, free coaching for local residents, attendance at the Mosman Park Fair with a club stall and their own Open Day all contributing to getting the club name 'out there'. A further terrific initiative involved the local private schools – fortunately situated across the road – with coaching programs incorporated into their sports lessons and the clubhouse utilised for curriculum activities such as Yoga. Off the green major works carried out included new pumps to water their fantastic grass greens, new LED lighting for social bowls and the occasional pennant fixture and significant work

carried out by their 'club patriots' program of volunteers in and around the grounds of the club. This formalised group of around 35 members get involved in all sorts of projects for the benefit of the club – a fantastic initiative that any club could take up. With one of the largest social calendars in the state (over 300 functions last year) there appears to be no stopping the Mossies.
Small Country Club of the Year – Gnowangerup
Finest achievements off the green! It is fair to say that Gnowangerup has had a fantastic few years. Winners of this award in 2017, they have for a club of only 41 members performed well above their weight on and off the green. Pennant winners for both the men’s and ladies competitions in the Central Stirling Bowling League, a strong showing in events such as the last 16 in the Over 60s men’s pairs, last 32 in the Country Week Men’s Fours, last 8 in the ladies Country Week Singles and last 16 in the Country Week Pairs was a solid effort for a club with limited numbers. A clean sweep in the ladies League events and a win for the men in the pairs and fours topped off the season. Add to that a 6-week corporate bowls season that attracted upwards of 80 participants and you have a thriving bowling club. But perhaps their finest achievements were off the green. The replacement of two synthetic greens without the need for external funding was testament to the strength of the club not only financially but as a community, with a significant portion of the work carried out by club volunteers. Toss in a host of weddings, parties, anything and unfortunately a funeral or two and you realise why the club has won best small country club of the year two of the last three years.

Willie Tan
Club Coach of the Year
Warnbro Bowling Club
Our 2018/19 Coach of the Year needs little introduction to metropolitan bowlers. Willie Tan although relatively new to coaching ranks has made an immediate impression not only at his home club of Warnbro but further afield. Focussing on the basics each week saw a concentration on improving a small band of junior members with drills and skill sessions – often just prior to his own pennant playing commitments. His Facebook Page Bowling with Willie sought to assist and encourage all bowlers, irrespective of ability or time in the game. Further afield though he was able to assist his home country of Singapore, when during a holiday he took on the responsibilities of coaching a group of disabled members. To ensure he understood the challenges faced he undertook the coaching from the confines of a wheelchair thereby ensuring what he sought from his pupils he first could attempt and then achieve himself ! Willie’s coaching journey has only just begun, but his genuine love of the game and always happy attitude will stand him in good stead at whatever level and direction his coaching passion takes him. Like Keith he too will represent WA at the national awards in October. We wish his nomination via Bowls WA well.

Volunteer of the Year
Keith Bowden
Fremantle Bowling Club
There are a number of highlights when looking at Keith Bowden’s resume at the Fremantle Bowling Club. To list them in order is a pretty tough ask, would it be; • His nine years service as a President or Vice President over four different stints, • His important role as Treasurer of the newly created Fremantle Park Sport and Community Committee, • His work on the Bar & Functions committee, greens committee, selection or match committees all over the past decade or • Gradually dragging the club to financial viability from some pretty difficult times over the past decade. However to top them all will be the current redevelopment of the site, where with collaboration with the adjacent Fremantle Tennis Club, City of Fremantle and the soon to be partners Fremantle Workers Club, a new state of the art facility will emerge. As can be imagined these significant projects simply do not come to fruition overnight. With a decade of resistance, obstacles and problems associated with the bringing together of not only traditional bowling members but club members from other sports and pursuits, it required a patient, precise and level-headed approach. Fortunately the bowling club had Keith continuing to drive the project to the point that building completion is anticipated early in 2020 and a new era will emerge for one of Western Australia’s oldest sporting facilities. Well done Keith a worthy recipient of the BWA Volunteer of the Year, who will now represent WA in the Bowls Australia national awards.

Over 60s Male Bowler of the Year
Gordon King is Over 60’s champ After a very strong year at the Over 60’s level the winner of the Trevor Barron Award for the Men’s Over 60’s Bowler of the Year was Gordon King. King followed in the footsteps of club mates Grant Nicol (2017), Steve O’Neill (2016) and Graham Evans (2014) to give Osborne Park bowlers three wins in just the eight years the award has been recognised. King’s great season started with a semi-final finish in the Over 60’s Triples with O’Neill and Nicol before he captured the Over 60’s Singles in undoubtedly his best career performance. King who has had a sustained career playing Premier League for over 20 years has remained loyal to Osborne Park Bowling Club throughout and has always been a very consistent lead or second in pennants. He certainly used his consistent draw shot to advantage over the later stages of matches in the Singles win. The Award clinching effort came when King skippered his playing partner Irene Bourne to the semi-finals in the Mixed 0ver 60’s Pairs. King and Arndt were defending champions going into the event were beaten by eventual winners Chris Lander and Pauline Bourne in a tight match 20-18 however it gave King enough points to take out the Bowler of the Year Award.
• Gordon King in action during the final of the Men's Over 60s Singles.
King was naturally thrilled to accept the award at the Bowls WA Awards Night and highlighted how competitive the Over 60’s events had become in WA with record entries for the year. King who has been in and out of the Western Australian Over 60’s State Team must again be a strong chance to represent WA on his efforts throughout 2018/19. He indicated he is very keen to get back into the side and will be looking to trial strongly for selection. The Over 60’s Side will be announced later in August with the team to play at Ettalong Bowling Club, New South Wales from October 2124. Congratulations once again to Gordon King on his outstanding year. Over 60s Female Bowler of the Year
Pauline Bourne wins Over 60’s award Sorrento’s Pauline Bourne has taken out the Women’s Over 60’s Bowler of the Year. She was presented with the Norma Samuel Award at the Bowls WA Awards Night on Friday May 24th for her great season at Over 60’s level. In a year of amazing consistency Bourne was a standout recording Bowler of the Year points in every Over 60’s event through the season. She skipped her Sorrento side of Coral Smith and Nerrida Porteous to the semi-finals in the Over 60’s Triples, was runnerup in the Over 60’s Pairs with team mate Robyn Van Mosseveld, made the semi-finals of the Over 60’s Singles before winning the last event on the Over 60’s calendar the Mixed Over 60’s Pairs with Chris Lander. Her ability to not only play well but also to combine with a number of different team mates a testament to her affable nature. The quietly spoken and modest Bourne when collecting her award reflected that she was lucky to have done so well and very happy to have done it with Sorrento team mates. She specifically thanked them for their great support and good bowls. Bourne has already been selected to once again represent WA at the Over 60’s Sides Championships. She will play lead for Lee Poletti in what is a very strong WA side. Congratulations once again to Pauline Bourne on winning the Norma Samuel Award for the Women’s Over 60’s Bowler of the Year.

, Men s Country Bowler of the Year
Justin Smith wins first for York York’s Justin Smith has become his clubs first player to win the Vice Patrons Medal awarded to the Men’s Country Bowler of the Year. The announcement was of little surprise to those who attended the Bowls WA Awards Night given Smith had claimed his second Country Week Singles title, won the Country Week pairs with his brother Aaron and finished runner-up in the Country Week Fours with his father Hayden, brother Aaron and York club mate Phil Jones. A rare achievement in Country Week which had not been done for over 60 years. Smith had a large contingent of family and club support at the awards night and received tremendous applause when heading on stage to accept the achievement. Smith was very grateful to receive the award, particularly having the support of his family both on and off the green. "I need to thank the girlfriends, not only my girlfriend but also my brothers. We love bowls and sometimes they don’t because we play so much,” he said. “But they allow us to play because we love it, so we get through it." Smith then shocked the audience by announcing he will be spending a season off bowls having bought a caravan from his Nanna and Pop, who were also at the event. The 26yo who still plays AFL will look to have some holiday adventures with his girlfriend in the next 12 months but undoubtedly will return to bowls at some stage in the future.

Regardless the rest of his family are very capable of keeping the family name in the spotlight with brothers Aaron and Nathan, sister Emma and parents Hayden and Sian all talented bowlers.

She collected the Penny Needham Brooch, from Penny Sibon the daughter of the late Penny Needham at the Bowls WA Awards Night on Friday May 24th at Crown Perth. Like the Men’s Bowler of the Year winner Justin Smith, Abe had an unbelievable Country Week Championships winning both the Country Week Singles and Pairs in a dominant display. Abe was also runner-up in the State Singles and a winner in the Champion of Champion Singles winning that event also for a record seventh time. That victory will see her compete at the Australian Champion of Champion Singles at South Perth Bowling Club in October 9-11. Abe who has nothing left to prove in the game, having won all there is to win and in many cases multiple times, still continues to enjoy her bowls and playing at the highest level. Abe will again be representing WA shortly in the Over 60’s State Championships in October. Abe as always thanked her home club of Corrigin for their support and in particular her husband who has supported her in attending the many bowls events throughout the years.

Lindsay Rosenthal Medal – Daniel Trewhella
Trewhella wins Rosenthal Medal In a first and perhaps a sign of the times the Rosenthal Medal for the Men’s Bowler of the Year went to a player who never played a pennant game for the season. Doubleview’s Daniel Trewhella at 36 years old is a veteran of the game having started as a teenager however having a young family he made the decision to just play state events in what is a very busy bowls season. A testament to Trewhella’s natural ability was the fact he was not only able to compete strongly but win his first Rosenthal Medal with very little practice or regular play through the season. In what was a very even year for Men’s Bowls Trewhella won the State Triples with Daniel Brown and Shane Loftus before finishing runner-up in the State Singles along with some minor placings in the State Pairs and Champion of Champion Singles. His performance in the State Singles albeit as runner up was a truly great effort with the final roundly applauded as one of the great Men’s State Singles finals ever witnessed. Trewhella had played magnificently defeating several high profile opponents to make the final, with his trademark drive on display mixed with plenty of good draw shots played just as good in the final before ultimately defeated by a sensational Blake Butler. Trewhella was naturally extremely pleased to join bowls greats such as Dennis Katunarich, John Rainoldi, Steve Srhoy and Geoff Oakley as a Rosenthal Medal winner. In a fitting conclusion to the Awards Night a clearly emotional Trewhella expressed his gratitude to his partner Simone for her support and thanked all those who had helped him to achieve the award including his very first coach in Peter Bowden.

40th Australian Blind Bowlers Nationals Perth and Tattersalls successfully hosted the 40th Australian Blind Bowler Nationals in May. This event had four States participating over a range of vision impaired categories from B1 to B4 including Open and Gender Specific competitions. WA performed very well earning nine (9) awards with a Gold in the B2 Open Pairs, 3 Silver in the B2 Men’s Singles and the B2 and B3 Mixed Pairs, and 5 Bronze in the B2 and B3 Men’s Singles, B2 and B3 Open Pairs, and B2 Ladies Singles.
The term 'Director' explained For those unfamiliar with the term 'Director' this is the non-playing partner who acts as the 'eyes' of the vision impaired bowler. Their direction can be physical (by touch), verbal (by talk), and mental (creating a picture of the head). The Director tells the player how many metres the jack is from the front of the mat and describes the opponent’s bowls around the head so that the player can choose the shots they wish to play.

Internations Carnival raises $10,000 for Perth children Another successful Internations Carnival was held at the Rossmoyne Bowling Club on the 5th and 6th of May with Australia coming up trumps in another hard fought but friendly battle amongst bowlers representing their nation of origin. The Internations Carnival promotes good will and fellowship amongst bowlers of all nationalities but also promotes the game of lawn bowls as a sport, through the support of the community with of course the ultimate goal of raising money for children of Perth. At the Internations Committee meeting on Tuesday 4th June it was agreed to donate the sum of $10,000 to the Perth Childrens Hospital which brings the total raised to $110,000 by bowlers in WA through this concept which first began in 1979. Congratulations to Rossmoyne Bowling Club on hosting a great event, they will also host the next Carnival on May 2nd and 3rd 2020. How do I choose my Home Care Package service provider? Once you have received the letter from the Government advising you that you have been assigned a package, you have only 56 days from the date of the letter to enter into a Home Care Agreement with your chosen provider. If that doesn’t happen during this period, the package will expire. 56 days is not a lot of time to make the important decision of who to trust with your own care or with looking after your spouse or a family member. Each service provider will provide services differently and charge different costs. So it’s important to look around, think about your own priorities, needs, budget, and location, and compare providers before deciding. A useful starting point is the Government’s 'Find a Provider Tool' which can be found at https://www.myagedcare. gov.au/find-a-provider where all home care providers are now required to publish their pricing information in a standardised format. Here you will find information about: • care management and package management fees (note: providers might also use the terms case management fees and administration fees); • hourly rates for personal care, domestic assistance and other services; and • whether the provider charges: • the Basic Daily Fee • Exit Fees • travel costs for their Staff to visit you • an extra margin on top of what third party providers of goods or services charge. Comparing costs is not straight forward so to help you make a decision, ask the service providers on your shortlist to tell you how many hours of services per week they will be able to provide from your package – or even better – ask them to provide you with an indicative budget. Of course, quality and care aspects of the services you require are as important as the number of service hours, if not even more so. Questions you should ask include: • • • •
can I choose the carer who will be providing my services? can I choose times and days for my services? can the provider guarantee qualified, experienced and caring staff? can I choose my own providers, for example for allied health services or for gardening services?
Do your due diligence, interview more than one organization, ask the tough questions and remember – you can always change your service provider if they don’t deliver what they promised. Schraner to lead Suns in BPL 10 Recently retired Australian Jackaroo Lee Schraner (37) will lead the November Perth Suns assault on BPL#10. Schraner as Australian Cap #132 has already had a remarkable career, with no doubt plenty more to come. The current Australian Singles Champion of Champions will represent Australia in the World Champion of Champions event in Adelaide this year, having won Bronze in the same event in 2018. With a bowling resume that includes 61 club titles, 40 group titles, 18 state titles, 14 national and 1 international title and having represented Victoria and Tasmania a combined 297 times, Schraner will add plenty of grunt to the Suns in Pine Rivers. Joining Schraner will be another debutante in our own Cody Packer. Packer had a strong Australian Sides Series in April where he skippered his rink to a number of top quality performances and his past experience as a quality leader in the Sides Series will stand him in good stead for the cut-throat competition. Upon confirmation from her European vacation the team will be rounded out by Jackaroo Kristina Krstic, who needs no introduction after another very fine local and national season in 18/19. The reigning WA ladies bowler of the year excels in this format and is consistently in the top performers – male or female.

Packer and Krstic will continue to provide the WA flavor to the team, with Schraner adding that required “X” factor. The team will again be managed by Pieter Harris who is no stranger to the event, having played for and managed the team now on several occasions.

2nd KDVSC Presidential Cup
International Lawn Bowls Games Article by Denise McMillan One of the advantages of working for a State Sporting Authority, particularly in the area of Inclusion, is having the opportunity to be invited to attend events that would otherwise never cross my path. This recently occurred with an invitation to attend the KDVSC (Korean Disability Veterans Sports Council) 2nd Presidential Cup in Suwon, Korea – an inclusive event for all abilities. These games started in 2013 and their main purpose is to promote harmony, friendship and peace through lawn bowls games – the most appropriate logo is… ‘One Passion, One Challenge’. This prestigious event hosted six Nations: Australia, China, Japan, New Zealand, Singapore, Thailand and of course Korea –both Veteran and National Teams. The Opening Ceremonies was an outstanding affair with dignitaries from State and Local Government, Military and Sport attending with traditional dance and drums. The format was Singles and Pairs and 74 Players participated in the event with some Countries entering multiple teams of nine. Western Australia, as first time attendees, sent a small team with two players from Perth (Eddie Gollan – Rossmoyne, Frank Fletcher – Osborne Park) and one player from Tasmania (Rick Ormerod – Dover), while Denise McMillan attended as the Team Manager. Participation was the key here as the greens were not easy to play on (think patch work quilt); however, Rick and Eddie did end up in the Quarter Finals for Pairs and all three playersfought hard in Singles with Rick playing in the last 32!

In the end the six Medals on offer were won by five Korean Teams and one Chinese Team! The hospitality extended to visitors, players and dignitaries was outstanding with accommodation, meals, local transportation, interpreters and logistical support offered to each Nation. At the Closing Ceremonies each Nation was presented with a Commemorative Shield representing the games. A huge THANK YOU to KDVSC for having this event and for the support they showed in creating friendships and everlasting memories to each and every attendee!

Variety WA and Bowls WA join forces to support kids in need Bowls WA is putting kids in need at the heart of their clubs by naming Variety – The Children’s Charity of WA as their new official Charity Partner. More than 15,500 Bowls WA members across more than 200 clubs, from Kununurra to Esperance, are set to band together to raise funds for Variety WA. Bowls WA CEO Ken Pride said as one of WA’s largest sporting organisations, they felt the need to give back to the community. “We are excited to help the children in our community who need it most by teaming up with Variety WA, and we believe our members will strongly support this partnership,” he said. “We’ve chosen to support Variety WA because we believe the work they do in giving kids a fair go, whether that be through individual grants, scholarships or specialised programs and experiences, ultimately benefits our members’ communities.”
The local bowling club has long been the social centre of many WA country towns for people of all ages and walks of life. Bowls WA has helped to foster a strong sense of community on a local level, and is now bringing that community spirit together to make a difference across the state. “Variety WA exists to support disadvantaged children and their families across WA, who aren’t able to access the support they need through any other means,” Variety WA CEO Tony Hume said. “With the support of Bowls WA, we’ll be able to provide a helping hand to even more kids who are sick, disadvantaged or living with disability.” There are plans for regional Bowls WA clubs to be incorporated into Variety WA’s unique fundraising road trip events, including the iconic Variety Bash, as well as the Variety 4WD Adventure and Variety Creative Car Cruise.
Digital marketing for sporting clubs… A how to guide for boards and committees The importance of digital marketing cannot be underestimated. These days, the average person has seven social media accounts, yep you read that right, seven! Social media is so integrated into everything we do that it makes no sense to ignore the potential it offers. Social media is a brilliant tool for growing your club, whether it’s letting your local community know you are there, encouraging your locals to come and try bowls, or promoting the use of your function and event facilities But while your club might have a website, probably a Facebook account, and maybe even an Instagram account, are they being used effectively? Having a social media strategy in place is super important. It should cover things like: • who you are trying to reach with your social media – are you wanting to talk to your existing club members or are you interested in attracting new people to your club? • where you think the people you are trying to reach can be found – are they on Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat or searching the web? • what resources you have to reach them – are you just relying on your members and existing followers to share your message, or is your board willing to devote some money to getting your message out there?
• how you are going to do it all – do you have one person who can create all your content or do you have a team of them?
While its really tempting for most people to just jump in and do…don’t! Plan it right and get the best out of your social media efforts

Bowls WA Under 18 State Coach Ken Perks recently featured in the Community News, recognized for his long service to coaching across a number of different sports including bowls.
Ken Perks celebrates 60 years as a coach Bowls WA Under 18 State Coach Ken Perks recently featured in the Community News, recognized for his long service to coaching across a number of different sports including bowls. Noranda resident Ken Perks, who celebrates his 60th anniversary as a sports coach this year, wants to continue coaching for as long as he can. The Morley Bowling Club and WA under-18s lawn bowls coach has coached juniors and seniors across football, tee-ball and lawn bowls throughout his career. Perks (74) was the inaugural vice-president of the Noranda Junior Hawks Football Club after starting the club with his friend Allan East. In his early days, he coached 120 under-12s players in a team called the Moseys before moving to the Morley Eagles Teeball Club, where his son was a member. He coached three premiership teams in the under-9s, under10s and under-11s during his time as a tee-ball coach. He then started coaching lawn bowls at Morley, Inglewood, Bedford and Warwick bowling clubs and went on to win the WA Bowls Coach of the Year in 2014 and 2016.
Perks said he enjoyed seeing players improving and having fun at competitions and practice. “As a coach, I have always worked on having good discipline for the players to achieve all their goals and work hard in practice to get that shot right,” he said. “There is always somebody that will ask you ‘how did you do that?’. “This is where all coaches can help this player out to achieve to the best of their ability to play that shot well.” He said he felt motivated to continue giving juniors and adults a chance to play at the best and perform well on and off the field. “I think sport is a way for people to enjoy themselves, to prove to themselves they can do it, to give them something to do in their leisure time and keeps them out of trouble,” he said. “I would love to coach as long as my heart holds out.” – Written by Kristie Lim, Eastern Reporter-Community News
