A warm welcome from Julian Baker, Academic Director Box Hill School has been running its Academic Pre-School Course for more than fifteen years. It was set up as a way of helping students settle into boarding-school life and to help tune their ear to the English language. Over the years the course has developed very successfully and it is now open to any student who is starting a course at any UK boarding school – it is not just for Box Hill Students. We have always found that it has had a very positive effect on those who have attended, both socially and academically. Students enrolled on this course have consistently performed better academically in the important first months of study, paving the way for improved grades at the end of their education. The course provides students with academic preparation in English, both written and spoken, as well as developing vocabulary in specific subject areas. Students will also become familiar with the routine of a boarding school and will discover a little more about UK culture. Although academically based, the course is also designed to be fun, and there are exciting opportunities to explore this area of England on excursions, where they can put into practical use the language learned during the course. Our highly professional and well qualified academic and administrative staff are here to help and support you and will be happy to answer any questions that you might have. I hope that I will have the pleasure of meeting you in 2018.

“I am much better prepared for learning in the UK and I am glad I did the course I would recommend these two weeks.” Marie-Therese Habersatter, Germany

Activities and Excursions As part of the Academic Pre-School Course there is a programme of social activities and excursions. This is an essential part of the course as it will encourage students to socialise in a new environment with new people and provide important shared experiences within the group. It also gives the opportunity for students to learn more of the British culture and most importantly have some relaxation and fun! In the evenings, social activities including quizzes, ten pin bowling and laser quest will take place. All our activities will be well supervised, with our staff joining in the fun.

Students will focus on English and three additional subjects including Maths, Science, Business Studies and Humanities that will introduce the basics of study in the UK. There will be five academic lessons each day that last for 60 minutes, as well as a research or revision session in the evening. Students study for 27 hours a week, with between 10 and 15 hours of dedicated English. There will be no more than ten students in each class, with a mixture of nationalities in each to encourage English Speaking. All subjects are taught by subject specialists who focus on teaching the technical English words needed to study each subject. Staff are highly qualified and have many years of experience in teaching their specialist subjects, not only to overseas students with English as an additional language, but also to the brightest UK students. English Learning English language is at the centre of all teaching, and by taking part in the many different lessons and activities during the course, a student’s confidence in using English will improve. In classes, students focus on English for academic purposes, but will also learn English for daily life, such as opening a bank account, using the telephone, asking for directions and making travel arrangements. All students have access to our reading library that has a huge choice of graded reading books. Every student will be encouraged to read a book during the course and discuss it as part of the English programme. During science lessons students will take part in experiments and laboratory work and will be taught how to write up what they have learnt in the way that UK schools and universities expect. There will also be classes that focus on research and study skills where students complete projects and presentations. This will cover areas such as critique and evaluation, referencing and crediting sources, ‘Truth, Lies and the Internet’, and plagiarism.

“During the two weeks, I learned new vocabulary and improved my writing skills.” Pietro Amici, Italy
