Box Hill School - Leaving a Legacy

An opportunity to unlock potential ‌ Every successful institution must be guided by a vision, and Box Hill School is no exception. It is important to us that we produce well-adjusted, tolerant and confident young people, who have achieved academic success, and are capable leaders both in school and in the world beyond. Our Headmaster and Governors are determined that the School will continue to progress and remain at the forefront of education both nationally and internationally. However, we also place an equal emphasis on our determination and passion to develop the whole person and unearth qualities in our pupils that they did not know they possessed. Our Round Square IDEALS of Internationalism, Democracy, Environmental concern, Adventure, Leadership and Service set us apart and we apply them every day in the classroom and through our vast range of activities and expeditions. Pupils amaze themselves when they see what they are capable of achieving, and we watch them grow in confidence. We unlock their potential.

Developing the school environment Investments in new buildings and facilities are vital to ensure that the fabric of the school continues to match the high standards set by staff and pupils. Box Hill School makes the best use of existing land to provide new facilities for those activities that are so vital in the personal growth and wellbeing of the pupils in our care. Funds are applied wherever the need is greatest.

Supporting our vision for the future Many Old Boxhillians, their parents, and current parents have expressed an interest in supporting the School today, but not everyone can afford to make a donation at a time when there is the expense of bringing up a family or providing for retirement. Making a gift in a Will is an alternative that provides a valuable source of funds for Box Hill School, with the added benefit to the donor that a gift to a registered charity is free of inheritance tax.

Making a Will or adding a codicil If you do not have a Will, this may be the time to consider making one. The most important reason for doing so is to ensure that members of your family will benefit on your death. A carefully drawn Will can help reduce your liability to tax, and thus increase the amount available for your family. When your family needs have been met you may also wish to consider making a gift to Box Hill School to support future generations of pupils.

Why a gift to Box Hill school?

ox Hill School is not financially wealthy and does not have the rich endowments necessary to fund bursaries and new developments that will enable us to keep pace with changing needs. However, from time to time since it was founded in 1959, the School has benefitted from the generosity of parents, former pupils, Governors, Trustees and friends. Through such support the School has been able to provide a distinctive education to a wide range of pupils.

Bursaries Box Hill School currently offers a small, but important number of bursaries, based on the financial need or changes in circumstances of pupils’ families, but mostly these cover a percentage of the fees. We want to broaden access to the School by raising funds for full entrance bursaries so that any deserving pupil, regardless of their financial circumstances, can apply for a place.

How can I benefit BHS in my Will? You can leave a fixed sum of money to Box Hill School (pecuniary bequest), or if you prefer you can leave a percentage share of your estate to the School (residual bequest). It is preferential for the school if a gift does not have specific conditions attached, so that the Governors and Trustees can make sure it is used where funds are needed most. If you do decide that you wish to make a gift to Box Hill School this can be incorporated into an existing Will by way of a codicil. Please do bear in mind that a codicil requires careful preparation, and above all it must be signed in the same way as a will in order to be valid.

How do I make a Will or alter an existing one? Making a Will is of course a very personal decision. We recommend that you consult a solicitor or expert advisor to guide you through the process, and translate your wishes into the form of a legal document. Using a solicitor need not be expensive. If you do not have your own solicitor, ask your family and friends to recommend one. Do try to find a solicitor who has experience in drafting Wills, as it is a specialised area of work.

“To me Box Hill was the most sheltered but at the same time, most exciting way to learn and to grow up. I am very grateful for having participated in an environment which made me find true friends as well as inspiration and support. (Bursary recipient 2007)
