NEW STARS 2020

L

ast week the Footy Budget dared to tip who would be the powerhouse stars for 2020, with youth front and centre. One we didn’t tip was Nick Lange. He made his debut with Central and in a best on ground performance – that’s right, BOG on debut – the wily blonde Bulldog stamped himself as a name to watch. Aged 22, he is 186cm and 78kg, and had 21 disposals at an efficiency rate of 90%. Lange also added 1.2 to Central’s scoreline. Ash Johnson – three goals from his first three kicks with Sturt and a final tally of 3.2 – sparked a buzz NICHOLAS LANGE

amongst the Double Blues faithful. Another 22-year-old, he took seven marks to show that opposition defenders will have their hands full as he builds in confidence. One that the Budget tipsters did get right was the solid debut of Zac Dumesny, who did enough to show that maturity will transform him into a gun player. The teenager is capable of playing back or forward for the Panthers but is better suited to the wing, with his skill set and speed an asset. Many of the other fresh faces tipped by the Budget - including West’s Riley Thilthorpe and North’s Karl Finlay – averaged a few

possession’s each quarter and will grow in stature with more game time. Panther Beau McCreery in his debut game seemed to find the pace in the last quarter and his two goals in that term were pivotal in South’s one-goal win over the Eagles. As a footnote, we didn’t pick this one: Lewis Hender is no new kid on the block but the long break and pulling on the red and white for North seems to have rejuvenated him. He was star power personified in last week’s match against West Adelaide, gliding home seven goals in a thrilling display of talent. Aged 26, he still has plenty of years to show just how good he can be.

FAMOUS SANFL FATHER-SONS BY STEVE BARRETT

(L-R) Robrans – Jonathon, Barrie, Matthew

W

aves of nostalgia and romanticism infiltrate diehard football fans when father-son combinations make memorable imprints. The SANFL has been blessed with numerous great ones over the years. Often referred to as the father of the modern-day Port Adelaide Football Club, Fos Williams is the patriarch of arguably SA’s most famous football family, which has a grandstand at Alberton Oval named after it. After crossing from West Adelaide in 1950, Fos coached the Magpies to nine premierships, including six as 6

a player, and is captain-coach of Port’s all-time ‘Greatest Team’, announced in 2001. Fos was best-on-ground in his last game as a player - Port’s titanic 1958 grand final triumph over the Bloods - which came six weeks after his twin sons, Mark and Anthony, were born. Mark played in four flag-winning sides with the Pies and coached the Power to its only AFL premiership in 2004. Younger brother Stephen, like his dad, was involved in nine SANFL flags with Port - six as a player, three as coach. Fos’s long-time rival supercoach and fellow top-class rover, Jack

Oatey, oversaw three Norwood premierships as a captain-coach before winning seven more from the bunker with Sturt between 1966-76. He was selected as coach in both the Redlegs and Double Blues’ Teams of the Century. Son Robert played 301 games and coached Norwood (against his old man, with minimal success) before switching to Sturt and winning a flag under Jack in 1974. Younger brother Peter was a team-mate of Robert’s at Norwood from 1965-72. Russell Ebert is Port’s favourite son and holds the league record with four Magarey Medals.

Jack Oatey (1950)

Robert Oatey (1962) His son Brett added No.5 for the family when he claimed the 2003 award as a 19-year-old. North Adelaide legend Barrie Robran is widely regarded as SA’s greatest player and his footballplaying sons were always going to find his shoes big ones to fill. Matthew and Jonathon Robran made a fair fist of it though, but not with the Roosters. Matthew played 54 games for Norwood and was a key contributor in Adelaide’s back-to-back AFL premierships in 1997-98, while Jonathon represented the Redlegs 100 times either side of a serviceable AFL career with Hawthorn and Essendon. 8

Peter Oatey Nine-time Port premiershipwinner Geof Motley was also going to prove a hard act to follow for his next of kin. Son Peter Motley was right on track though, sparkling for Sturt across 92 matches from 1982-85 and then headed for superstardom with Carlton before a horrific traffic accident prematurely ended his career. Ruckman Hartley Bagshaw played in Sturt’s 1940 premiership before being overshadowed more than two decades later by son Paul, who thrilled league crowds across 360 magical games. Norwood’s most enduring football families are the Aishes and Gallaghers.

Former Redlegs captain Peter Aish represented Norwood from 1953-62 and his sons Andrew and Michael combined for 396 games. Michael was a four-time club champion, a dual premiership player and the 1981 Magarey Medallist and his son Jesse played 38 matches. Andrew’s son James was a twotime SANFL premiership winner prior to his 18th birthday before being drafted by Brisbane in 2013. Speedy, skilful Sam Gallagher played in three Norwood flags in 1946, ‘48 and ‘50 but was pipped as the Legs’ Team of the Century wingman by son Phil, who enjoyed four premierships among his 292

Graham Cornes

Tom Warhurst Junior games. James Gallagher, Sam’s grandson and Phil’s nephew, played 228 matches for Norwood, the last of which was the 2012 grand final victory. At Glenelg, it’s all about the Kernahans and Corneses. Harry Kernahan rucked with distinction for the Tigers from 195971 but didn’t win a flag. His sons Stephen and David did, in 1985. Stephen developed into one of football’s greatest-ever centre halfforwards and is captain of Carlton’s Team of the Century. Graham Cornes played alongside both Harry and Stephen Kernahan during his 317-game stint at the Bay, where his sons Chad and

Tom Warhurst Senior

Chad Cornes

Kane commenced their football journeys. Chad and Kane only made 79 SANFL appearances for Glenelg combined, instead making their major mark in the AFL with the Power. Keegan Brooksby followed in father Phil’s footsteps in making a lasting impression at South Adelaide. Likewise Central District great Paul Thomas whose father Jamie started that family’s story at Elizabeth, with further chapters being added by Paul’s SANFLWplaying daughter Aisha. Ben Nelson and Shannon Hurn emulated their dads, Sandy and

Kane Cornes

William, in becoming powerful, no-nonsense defenders at Sturt and Central District, respectively, as was the case with Tom Warhurst Snr and Jnr at Norwood. AFL superstars Nathan Buckley, Matthew Pavlich and Warren Tredrea easily clipsed the footy deeds of their SANFL fathers, Ray, Steven and Gary, while Crows AFLW megastar Erin Phillips is rapidly gaining on her Port royalty dad Greg in football’s finest father-daughter combo. With familiar next-of-kin surnames like Burgoyne, Jarman, Mead, Edwards, Stretch and Koster now gracing SANFL grounds, the time-honoured tradition is alive and well. www.sanfl.com.au

SAD LOSSES FOR SANFL BY ROBERT LAIDLAW

T

here have been numerous former SANFL players who passed away between seasons, adding to the list of missing champions. One of the biggest names lost to the game, in late May, was Bob Hammond, who played and coached premiership teams in the SANFL, as well as filling the role as the inaugural Adelaide Football Club Chairman from 1991 to 2000. As a rookie in 1960, Bob played in North Adelaide’s premiershipwinning team, as well as going back-to-back with the Roosters in 1971-72, where his determined work at full back was significant. In 1974 Bob took on the role of coach at Norwood, breaking a 25-year flag drought the following season, then leading the Redlegs to a centenary premiership in 1978. He also represented the State, played 248 SANFL games, coached Sydney Swans, was an AFL commissioner from 2001-11, as well as being in the South Australian and Australian Football Hall of Fames. Former Chairman of the SANFL (2003-2010) and League Life Member Rod Payze passed away in early May. Rod started his involvement in the SANFL as a player with West Torrens in 1960, playing 84 league games through to 1966. After retiring, he then was on the Eagles selection committee before joining the SA Football Commission in 1995. He filled roles as Deputy Chairman and Vice-President before his appointment as Chairman. Rod’s passion and commitment to the game was outstanding, which led to his earning Life Membership of the League in 2006. He also had an outstanding career away from football, as he held a Bachelor of Engineering from Adelaide University and a Master of Science from Northwestern University in the United States, and was a Fellow of the Institute of 18

Bob Hammond Glen Rosser

Doug Thomas Engineers and the Chartered Institute of Transport and Logistics. Glen Rosser was first a successful player with Norwood and reserves coach before starting his magnificent administration career with the SANFL. He was only 68 when he passed away last December. From 1969 to 1980, Glen played 182 league games for the Redlegs, as a hard-running elusive wingman, including two premierships, in 1975 and 1978. Then in a seven-year stint as assistant coach at Norwood, Glen took the reserves to four Grand Finals and two flags. After serving as Norwood’s General Manager from 1993 to1999, Glen joined the SANFL, where he served with distinction, firstly as General Manager of Football, before becoming GM of the SA Community Football League from its formation

in 2007 until 2013, as well as being a member of the SANFL Tribunal. Known universally around the SANFL as Mr West Adelaide for what seemed an eternity, Doug Thomas left a huge legacy when he passed away in April. He started his League career with West Adelaide in 1951 and in two stints (1951-56 and 1961-65) he played 218 games, mainly as a full back, although he also had stints at full forward. A premiership player in 1961, Doug also represented the State five times and coached his beloved Bloods in two seasons, 1963-64. But it was in his role as General Manager for Westies from 1977 to 2006 that his true love of the club really came to the fore. Doug also served the SANFL, as a League Director and on the Match and Permit Committee as well as the Umpires Board, while also a selector

John Blunden for South Australia from 1990-95. He is a member of the SA Hall of Fame. A dominant forward for most of his League career, John Schneebichler played mainly for South Adelaide, from 1975-87, with just one season with Glenelg in 1988 before retiring. In his 234 games with the Panthers, John booted 351 goals, while adding another 25 games and 26 goals with Glenelg. He also played in two losing Grand Finals, with South in 1979 and in his final season with the Tigers. John played five State games and also captained the Panthers from 1985-87. In his debut with South in 1975, he booted four goals, signalling the dangerous forward’s entry into the League. After retiring John was Glenelg’s Football Manager, before taking on the role of Football Director and coach at Brighton Football Club. He

passed away in March. Although not playing a game in the SANFL, David Wark will be remembered fondly for his administration work with Sturt and the League. His son David junior did play 131 games with the Double Blues from 1985-93. David was invited out to Sturt by Daryl Hicks, where he became club president and served for a decade from 1975, also becoming a SANFL Director from 1981-84, including in a Vice President’s role. Besides football, David was heavily involved in many other sports, which saw him receive an OAM in 2018 for his dedication and commitment as a volunteer and sports administrator across multiple decades. He is a Life Member of Sturt and the SANFL. Another Norwood premiership player, Rod Seekamp passed away in December. He played in the

Rod Seekamp Redlegs’ 1975 flag-winning team, where he was arguably best on ground out of the centre. Rod was injured in 1978 so missed the centenary flag. He made a comeback in 1979 but then retired. After starting his career in 1970 Rod played 145 games in various roles, where he was adept at half back, half forward or in the middle. He also represented the State in 1974. Former North Adelaide great John Blunden passed away in February. He played 141 games with the Roosters from 1949-58, which included two premierships, while also winning the 1953 Reserves Magarey Medal. John was North’s best and fairest in back-to-back season, in 1956-57, playing mainly as a reliable defender. He played for his State in 1951 and made The Advertiser Team of the Year in 1957. www.sanfl.com.au

Don Gilbourne

Max Hewitt

James Francis Wright He was involved with North Adelaide’s committee for many years, including serving as club president from 1972-75. Don Gilbourne has the unique distinction of playing in SANFL premiership teams in three decades, all with North Adelaide. He played in the 1949 and 1952 flagwinning teams, while captaining the 1960 successful side. He passed away in early February, igniting many fond memories of his career. In 14 seasons, from 1949, Don played 206 games for the Roosters and 10 for the State (including winning the O’Halloran Trophy as SA’s best against Victoria in 1957), culminating in his selection in the SA Football Hall of Fame in 2005. Originally a forward, Don made the transition to full back without missing a beat, with his long drop kicks a feature of his game. 20

In November last year former West Adelaide player Maxwell Hewitt passed away. He suited up for 137 games for the Bloods from 1949-60, earning SANFL player Life Membership. Max is the father of League footballers Glynn and Darryl, and grandfather of former World number one tennis player Lleyton Hewitt. Glen McPherson is a 100-game player with Glenelg and a World War II veteran. He passed away in May, at 95 years of age. A lightly-built player, Glen played for the Tigers in the 1940s and 1950s, mainly as a rover, wingman or small forward, kicking 105 goals in 121 games. He played in Glenelg’s losing Grand Final in 1950 and led the club’s reserves to a Grand Final as coach. Glen continued to support his beloved Tigers right up until recently.

Rod Payze In October last year, former South Adelaide defender Craig Cock passed away. He played 206 league games from 1967-78. Craig was a dashing defender, who was known for his speed, where he gave the Panthers many attacking opportunities. He was the fourth South player to reach the 200-game milestone. Former West Adelaide rover Jimmy Wright passed away this June. He played 208 games with the Bloods from 1952-64, including in the club’s 1961 premiership team. He was more than handy around the goals, botting 360 majors for West, which included leading the club’s goalkicking in 1955, 1958 and 1959. In his 12 seasons with West, Jimmy played in six Grand Finals but alas, for just one victory. He also represented the State three times.

FIRST AND FOREMOST BY PETER CORNWALL

Happy Sturt players proved they were a tight-knit group as the Blues snared the first win of the SANFL season – but the fans were keeping their distance.

I

t was the first day back. And it was a day of firsts. It certainly was the first time a SANFL season had kicked off in late June. A month of winter was almost gone. In fact, the perfect sunny day had a spring feel about it, Adelaide Oval looking as pretty as a picture. Then there was the limit on the crowd. The ticket lottery. The need to suddenly master downloading tickets on your smartphone. Social distancing with fans spaced apart, friends who had been going to the footy together for decades not able to sit within shouting distance. But, maybe our coronavirus experience has taught us to expect the unexpected, because it all seemed to go off without a hitch. All the planning, replanning and improvisation in an incredibly testing couple of weeks for the SANFL saw local footy return as the big winner. 24

www.sanfl.com.au

And the firsts went on. Former Panther Abe Davis, in his first game with Sturt, kicked the first goal of the season in the third minute – with his first kick at his new club. Then first-gamer Ash Johnson flashed into the Double Blues’ clash with Central District. First kick, first goal. Then, second kick, second goal. Sturt had the first three goals on the board in the opening 10 minutes. In the end, it would prove the difference. There’s little doubt which name would have been the first to go into the notebooks of AFL scouts watching the game. By four minutes into the second quarter Johnson had booted three goals and Sturt led 5.0 to 0.1. Johnson doesn’t look particularly tall but he sure plays it, leaping to snare strong marks seemingly from well out of position. His brother Shane McAdam,

recruited from Sturt to the Crows, was about to play his first AFL game for Adelaide the following day. Johnson showed he has the ability to follow him to the top level, the only drawback on his big first day the fact he missed his next two set shots at goal. First-game Central coach Jeff Andrews would have been more than worried at this stage. But after quarter-time his charges displayed he has plenty to work with, pressuring hard, tackling fiercely and having control of the footy for extended spells, a few times looking like they might over-run their more highly-fancied opponents. And what a sensation the Bulldogs have unearthed in Nicholas Lange. What a first game he played. The longer the match went, the more assured he looked as he was here, there and

Exciting Panthers first-gamer Beau McCreery proved the matchwinner against the Eagles with two quickfire late goals at Adelaide Oval. everywhere, working and running hard but also showing abundant allround skills to snare 21 disposals, 14 marks and a goal and waltz away with the club’s best player award. The Dogs’ slow start had kept their fans quiet early on. It took until time-on in the opening quarter before we finally heard one of its supporters hollering, “You Do-ogs”, belatedly making it officially a Central District game. As the tempo increased in the second quarter and the ‘select’ crowd realised a real contest was brewing the noise ramped up and the adrenaline surged – quite a bit different from the canned crowd noise at the wrong times of this year’s AFL coverage. And the crowd had plenty to make noise about on a day of firsts. Sturt debutant Lachlan Burrows, whose last-minute inclusion was so unexpected he wasn’t even listed in the Budget, threaded his first goal in league footy from a testing angle in the pocket and

newcomer Beau Schwarze’s snap shot first goal in the last term just about sealed the first win of the year. Sturt midfield bull Jed McEntee was outstanding on debut in the clinches, his physical work – including nine tackles and some desperate smothers – the stuff coaches love. James Battersby, in his first game as Blues skipper, was inspirational, with a game-high 11 clearances Then there was Panthers firstgamer Beau McCreery who sealed South Adelaide’s thrilling six-point win against the Eagles to cap the first day back for SANFL footy. Jade Sheedy’s first game as Eagles coach was off to a flyer, his men leading three goals to one at the first break. But South, again lifted by Joel Cross’s almost unstoppable combination of silky skills and phenomenal workrate, had dominated the middle two quarters and the Eagles were still on three goals at three-quartertime, trailing by 20 points.

There had been a total of nine goals in the first three quarters. But the floodgates opened and first one side then the other looked the likely winner as a remarkable 12 majors were added in the last term. Eagles brothers Jack and Nick Hayes were grabbing marks and hitting the scoreboard and after a couple of goals from mercurial James Rowe – one a stunning checkside around his body on the run from the boundary – they were in front. Then 19-yearold McCreery, with two goals within a minute in time-on, finally sealed the deal. The speedster from Hallett Cove won’t forget his first taste of league footy in a hurry. Sheedy now has his sights set on a win against Sturt, the club with which he won a Magarey Medal, four best-and-fairest awards and a premiership, being captain for six seasons. If one of the Blues’ alltime greats can engineer a win against his old club, that would be another memorable first. www.sanfl.com.au

WOMEN’S FOOTY REPORT

N

orth Adelaide continued its dominance of the Statewide Super Women’s League, with an 77-point victory against Sturt at Peter Motley Oval in Round 5. That wins takes the Roosters to an unbeaten run of five victories, at the top of the League table just ahead of the talented South Adelaide side, which has a season record of four wins and one loss. The Panthers held off the Tigers by 15 points at ACH Group Stadium on Sunday, while in other games Norwood more than doubled Central’s score at X Convenience Oval. And in a low-scoring tussle at Hisense Stadium, the Bloods 4.3 (27) held off the Eagles 1.4 (10). West and Norwood round out the top four, with Sturt pressing its claim in fifth spot. The remaining three teams are all locked together with one win apiece.

encounters between the Eagles and Panthers, and the Bulldogs and Double Blues. The Bulldogs did what their League team couldn’t, trumping Sturt by 14 points at X Convenience Oval. At Maughan Thiem Kia Oval on Sunday, the Eagles narrowly

downed South, 14.4 (76) to 11.2 (68). That’s a margin of eight points in a game where only six points were kicked from 29 shots on goal. Despite the inclusion of former North Melbourne and Brisbane midfielder Ryan Bastinac, Norwood fell to Glenelg by 22 points. www.sanfl.com.au

U18 TORRENS UNIVERSITY CUP WRAP ROUND 1

BY JOSH TEAKLE

T

he U18 Torrens University Cup launched over the weekend which was music to the ears of SA’s finest underage footballers who finally had the opportunity to put their best foot forward ahead of this year’s AFL National Draft. Sturt commenced its 2020 campaign with a comprehensive 49-point win over Central District thanks to dominant performances from Tom Powell and Mani Liddy at X Convenience Oval on Sunday. Powell and Liddy lined up alongside each other in the opening centre bounce and set the tone for the match as Powell found the opening clearance, burst through the forward 50m ark and opened the scoring in the first 20 seconds of the game. Unfortunately for Powell it was a behind, which was the only aspect of his game that might need a little more sharpening up during the week as he concluded

the match with 1.3, alongside 34 disposals, 20 handballs and seven clearances. While Powell and Liddy combined for 18 clearances in a powerful midfield display, Bulldogs midfielder Austin McDonald evened the scales with 12 clearances and 27 disposals of his own to help his side claim the overall clearance battle 38-35. Liddy rounded out the match with 33 disposals, 11 clearances and five tackles. Sturt tall Morgan Ferres was the dominant forward with three goals and seven marks as the Double Blues led from the start to open the season with a 14.13 (97) to 7.6 (48) victory.

Despite their incredibly interrupted campaign, North Adelaide draft prospects Jamison Murphy and Tariek Newchurch didn’t skip a beat in the Roosters’ 12-point win over West Adelaide at Prospect Oval on Saturday. Both members of the 2020 AFL Academy SA Hub, Murphy and Newchurch helped their side fight back from a three-goal deficit midway through the third term to kick five unanswered goals and take the two premiership points. After a fast start from North, kicking the opening two goals inside five minutes, the Bloods kicked seven of the next eight majors, including three to Dylan White, to wrestle control of the contest. West forward Connor Richardson took a strong pack mark and goaled at the six-minute mark of the third term to stretch the margin to a match-high 18 points before Newchurch entered the scene to boot three of the final five goals of the match, earning victory for the Roosters. Newchurch, listed as a Crows Next Generation Academy prospect, finished the game with a flurry and rounded out the match with 17 disposals, four marks and three goals. Roosters captain Murphy was a consistent performer through the midfield and ran out the game well following the extended break, finishing with 26 disposals, including 16 kicks, six inside 50s and five rebound 50s in the 8.10 (58) to 7.4 (46) result. North’s Kallis Freer was his side’s leading possession winner with 27 disposals, while West Adelaide’s Bailey Chamberlain led all comers with 28 touches.

North 8.10 (50) d West 7.4 (46) Woodville-West Torrens midfielder Caleb Poulter had a monumental impact in his side’s 10-point loss to South Adelaide at Maughan Thiem Kia Oval on Sunday.
