Hospitality Traineeship Leads to Role in Events

Working behind the scenes at Adelaide Oval, the pace is frenetic and Georgia Heatley loves every minute of it.

Georgia is a Hospitality Administration Assistant helping to make sure that everything goes smoothly for the many conferences, meetings, weddings and other events held at Adelaide Oval’s function rooms.

Fresh from the opening weekend of the Australian Football League’s 2022 season, Georgia says AFL game day is a real favourite.

“I love seeing the oval come alive when it’s full of people and our venues are busy – it’s a great feeling,” she says.

With her eyes on a career in the events industry, Georgia joined Adelaide Oval as a hospitality trainee, gaining on-the-job experience while studying a Certificate III in Hospitality through TAFE SA.

“The whole traineeship experience was great. I was able to learn on the job and apply everything straight away,” she says.

“The TAFE SA lecturer came to us every few weeks and in between visits we had assignments to do.

“I really enjoyed that the lecturer came to us and we were trained on the facilities that we were going to use every day.”

Georgia is now part of the Venue Hospitality department looking after administration for events, which includes checking invoices, approving rosters, confirming the timing of meal service and much more.

She says teamwork and good communication skills are essential in the hospitality industry and she particularly enjoys the problem solving that comes with her role.

“I love being the behind-the-scenes administration person and knowing I can handle anything that’s thrown at me. Every day is different,” Georgia says.
