UPDATE YOUR DETAILS
As a Dealer you must ensure all your details are up to date and that you have an approved manager. Your approved manager details must be renewed every year. A dealer must not continue selling vehicles unless the dealer has an approved manager.
If you employ staff, it is recommended that you have more than one approved manager to ensure you can continue to operate as a dealer at all times.
Your approved manager is the only person permitted to sell a vehicle and sign the form 10. To make an application for an approved manager please visit our website for more information.
THE DEALERS REGISTER
Each time a vehicle is purchased or sold (including on consignment), the Dealers Register must be completed within 2 working days of the vehicle coming into your possession or being sold. The Compliance Team may attend your approved premises during business hours to inspect your Dealers Register to ensure it has been correctly completed. The Compliance Team will also inspect odometer readings, VIN, engine numbers, owner’s details and all associated paperwork. These may include Personal Property Securities Register (PPSR), registration papers, notice of disposals, identification of the purchaser and the form 10. (This also includes vehicles on consignment).
DOB IN AN UNLICENSED DEALER
A person must not carry on the business of a motor vehicle dealer unless they are licensed to do so. Anyone who sells 4 or more vehicles in a 12 month period, and holds themselves out as a dealer, must have a motor vehicle dealer licence.
If you see an unlicensed dealer advertising 4 or more vehicles for sale or you know of someone who has sold more than 4 motor vehicles in a 12 month period, it’s in your best interests to report them.
Unlicensed motor vehicle dealers cause reputational harm and damage to the industry and ruin it for those who are doing the right thing.
Email the Compliance Team at associations.compliance@ nt.gov.au with the details of the advertisements and/or sale. Include their name, (if known) and any photos or screenshots from social media.
Please feel free to visit our website for more information or contact us on 08 8999 1800 if you have any questions.
